Land of Lakes and Gardens

srinagar tourism in december

Ng Hock How/Getty Images

Srinagar, in the Kashmir Valley in far northern India, is one of the top 10 hill station in India. A place of splendid natural beauty, it's often referred to as the "Land of Lakes and Gardens" or the "Switzerland of India". The gardens have a distinctly Mughal influence, as many of them were cultivated by Mughal emperors. Although civil unrest is an ongoing concern in the area due to conflict with nearby Pakistan, calm has been restored and visitors are returning to the area. (Read more about how safe is Kashmir now for tourists? ). Nevertheless, be prepared to see army personnel and police everywhere. Find out important information and travel tips in this Srinagar travel guide.

Getting There

Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam airport was completed in 2009 and is owned by the Indian Air Force. It can be reached most easily by flight from Delhi . There are also flights from Jammu, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Lucknow.

The Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation operates an inexpensive bus service from the airport to the Tourist Reception Center in Srinagar. Otherwise, expect to pay about 1,000 rupees for a prepaid taxi (2018 prices). App-based taxi services such as Uber and Ola don't operate in Kashmir.

If you're traveling on a budget and are feeling adventurous, you may try taking an Indian Railways train to Jammu (these trains start from Delhi or pass through Delhi from other cities in India), and then go by shared jeep/taxi to Srinagar (traveling time around eight hours). Buses also run but they are much slower, taking around 11-12 hours for the journey.

A rail project is currently underway to link the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India, but it's well behind schedule and isn't expected to be completed until after 2020. Tunnels are also being built to cut the travel time from Jammu to Srinagar by around five hours.

Visas and Security

Foreigners (including OCI cardholders) are required to register upon arriving and departing from the airport. It's a straightforward process that requires the completion of one form and only takes about five minutes. Do note that US government employees and government contractors who have security clearance are not permitted to visit Srinagar, as Kashmir is off-limits. Traveling to Kashmir could result in loss of security clearance.

The kind of experience you want to have in Srinagar will determine the best time of year to visit. It gets very cold and snows from December to February, and it's possible to go snow skiing in surrounding areas. If you want to enjoy the lakes and gardens, visiting between April to October is recommended. April to June is the high season. The monsoon usually arrives by mid July. September to October is also a good time to visit, and is not so busy. Foliage turns lovely deep, warm colors in late October, as the weather becomes colder. Temperatures get quite hot during the day in summer, but are chilly at night. Make sure you bring a jacket!

What to See and Do

Check out these top Srinagar attractions and places to visit. Srinagar is most well known for its houseboats, a legacy of the British that has rapidly multiplied. Don't miss staying on one!

Tips for Staying on a Houseboat

Avoid booking houseboats from tour operators in Delhi. There are plenty of scams and you never know what kind of boat you'll end up with! Reputable houseboats can be booked at Srinagar airport, and many have websites as well. Have a read of these tips for choosing the best Srinagar houseboat to find out what you should consider.

Where Else to Stay

The main commercial and tourist district, where most of the accommodations are situated, is Lal Chowk in the heart of Srinagar. It's located within close walking distance of local markets and the Jhelum River. Walking time to Dal Lake from Lal Chowk is about 30 minutes.

If you prefer to stay closer to Dal Lake, you'll find plenty of budget hotels to choose from along Boulevard Road, which runs along beside the lake. Hotel JH Bazaz and Blooming Dale Hotel Cottages offer good value for money in the Dal Gate area next to Dal Lake. Swiss Hotel Kashmir , located just off the Boulevard, is a popular budget choice -- and here's a pleasant surprise, foreigners pay reduced rates (usually, foreigners are charged more in India)! Hotel Dar-Es-Salam is a popular boutique hotel that overlooks the lake

Otherwise, if money is no object, the best luxury hotels are the Lalit Grand Palace and the Vivanta Dal View .

Hospitality Home is the most popular homestay in Srinagar and it's also inexpensive.

The annual Tulip Festival takes place during the first couple of weeks of April. It's the highlight of the year in Srinagar. In addition to being able to see millions of blooming tulips in the biggest tulip garden in Asia, cultural events are held.

Indian tourists often prefer to conduct their trip on an auspicious note, with a visit to Vaishno Devi shrine. It's best reached by helicopter from Katra, about an hour and a half from Jammu. Otherwise, these  popular tourist places in Kashmir can be visited on day trips (or longer side trips) from Srinagar.

Travel Tips

If you have a cell phone with a prepaid connection, your SIM card will not work as roaming has been blocked in Kashmir due to security reasons (postpaid connections are fine). Your hotel or houseboat may provide you with a local SIM card to use.

Note that being a predominantly Muslim area, alcohol isn't served in restaurants and most businesses shut for prayer at lunchtime on Friday in Srinagar. Bars can be found in select upmarket hotels though.

If you're flying out of Srinagar airport, do get there with plenty of time to spare (at least three hours before departure), as there are lengthy and multiple security checks. There aren't any restrictions on cabin luggage when flying into the airport. However, when departing, airlines often won't allow cabin luggage except for laptops, cameras and ladies handbags.

If you go to Gulmarg, you can save yourself a lot of time and hassle by booking gondola tickets online or in advance at the Tourist Reception Center in Srinagar. You'll face huge lines at the gondola otherwise. In addition, avoid visiting Pahalgam during July as it will be extremely busy with pilgrims going on the Amarnath Yatra .

Do be aware that you should dress conservatively to respect the local Muslim culture.

When is the Best time to visit Srinagar?

The best time to visit Srinagar is the months of January, February, April, September, and early October. If it is snow you are after then January and February is the best time to visit.

If lush green is what interests you then you should plan a trip in April or September. To see the orange of the autumn in the Chinar trees, October is when you should plan. If you went in November, the orange would have turned into red.

Srinagar gives you access to visiting some of the most desired destinations in India. Places like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam are merely a couple of hours away.

Not only you will be able to explore Kashmir as much as you like, but you can also always extend your trip by a few more days and head towards the valleys of Zanskar and Ladakh.

Even if you were just staying in Srinagar city, there are so many places to see here that it will keep you busy for a couple of days and you will still not be done.

It then brings us to the question of the best time that you should plan a trip to Srinagar, or in general Kashmir.

This will entirely depend on what you seek and some other factors like how are you traveling, whether is there a budget limitation and how many days you have in hand. Read on to find out more.

best time to visit srinagar

Srinagar in January

Winter is at its peak and you will definitely feel the chill in the wind. Pack all your woolen clothes and a heavy windproof jacket if visiting this time.

The average temperature of Srinagar in January will remain about 3 degrees Celsius. At night, it can drop down to -5 to -7, and at noon, will rise up to 12 Degrees Celsius.

It can snow anytime but the amount of snow on the ground will be a bit less towards the earlier part of the month.

Srinagar in February

The weather will mostly remain the same as in January but the amount of snow will be far greater. The average temperature of Srinagar in February will be about 5 degrees Celsius.

Nights will be extremely cold with temperatures dropping below zero. But the days will feel enjoyable with the temperature at noon touching almost 10 degrees.

If you want to see snow, then you should plan your trip for either January or February. It continues to snow in the valley in both of these months and you will have a high chance of seeing snowfall.

If you are interested in winter sports like skiing, then you should plan your trip in either late January or early February. This is when the snow on the ground will be suitable for such sports.

These sports however do not happen in Srinagar and you will either have to go to Gulmarg or Pahalgam.

Srinagar in March

Snow will start to melt and will be gone from the city in early March. The average temperature will rise to 12 Degrees. Nights will remain close to 0 but won’t drop below it. Day temperature at noon may rise to 20 Degrees Celsius by the end of the month.

Srinagar in recent years has started to see very little snow. It can snow in the city in March as well but the chances of that happening are becoming rarer with each passing year.

Places like Gulmarg and Sonamarg however will definitely have snow in March.

Srinagar in April

Spring season arrives and it will start to get warm. Day temperature may as well go up to 25 Degrees Celsius. Nights will be pleasant at about 6 to 7 Degrees. The average temperature of Srinagar in April will be close to 16 to 18 Degrees.

April is considered the peak tourist season in Kashmir. The entire valley gets filled with tourists from all over the country. This is also when the famous Tulip garden is in full bloom.

If you want to enjoy pleasant weather, see the Tulip garden, and enjoy lush green valleys and the garden, then April is when you should visit Srinagar. Take a look at the video below of Shikara ride to the famous floating flower and vegetable market of Srinagar.

Srinagar in May

By May, you may actually start to feel a bit hot at noon. It’s peak tourist season and the city may even get a bit crowded. The average temperature will be about 20 degrees Celsius. Nights will dip down to 10 whereas the maximum day temperature will be around 30 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar in June

June is the hottest month of the year in Srinagar. It may even start to rain towards the end of the month. Amarnath Yatra also commences towards the end of the month.

The average temperature will rise to 24. Night’s lowest will be around 15 and the day’s highest temperature will go as far as 35 Degrees Celsius. Yes, it will get hot during the day.

Together, the months of May and June are the best time to visit Srinagar if you are interested in trekking. All of the treks in the valley remain open in these months and the weather is perfect to go on an expedition.

Srinagar in July

Monsoon would have arrived and it will be raining all over, making it not a good time to visit. The average temperature will remain to be around 25 degrees celsius but the rains may cause the temperature to drop down below a couple of degrees.

I am not saying that you cannot visit Srinagar in the monsoon season. It is actually a good time if you want to see the lush green valleys that the rains will leave behind. But you must keep a close watch on the weather.

There have been times when incessant rains created a flood-like situation in Srinagar city. Even if the situation did not get so drastic, you may get trapped indoors if it continued to rain all day.

Srinagar in August

Independence day celebrations will be on and it will be tense all around. A lot of security can be seen everywhere. You can still visit Srinagar but I will not recommend it in the same week of 15th August.

The average temperature will remain around 25 degrees Celsius. Night’s lowest will be around 15 degrees whereas days can be as hot as 35 Degrees Celsius at noon.

What I stated above about the monsoon and the rains will remain applicable in August as well.

best time to visit srinagar

Srinagar in September

September is my favorite time to visit Kashmir, or anywhere in the Himalayas for that matter. The monsoon will be all gone but would have left plenty of greenery behind. It is the perfect time for a photography visit to Srinagar.

The weather will start to turn pleasantly cold. The average temperature will dip down to 20 Degrees. Nights will start to get even colder at a minimum of 9 Degrees whereas days will still be warm at 30 Degrees Celsius.

Srinagar in October

Autumn is here and the valleys are golden. But this month also marks the beginning of winter in Kashmir. The temperature at night will start to go as far below as 5 Degrees and the Day’s maximum will be around 25.

The average temperature at this time is around 15 Degrees Celsius overall. It is another good time to visit, especially for photography. By September end, Chinar trees will be all green. In October beginning, you will start noticing them turning a little orange.

The color will darken as the month progresses. By the end of October and early November, the orange will turn into a deep red, giving an overall mysterious look to the entire valley.

But other than this, there really isn’t much that October has to offer. It is dry season and except for the Chinar trees, it will just be dry and dull all around.

Srinagar in November

Unless you wanted to see the red in the Chinar trees, November is not a good time to visit Srinagar. The vistas will be dull but the weather will be very cold.

Nights will start to drop below 0 and day temperature will also come down to around 10 degrees maximum. The average temperature will remain around 7 to 8 Degrees Celsius.

So you get terribly cold weather, and dull scenery and there won’t even be any snow around. The only upside to visiting in November is that since it is the off-season, the trip may cost you a little less.

Srinagar in December

Winter is here and it can start to snow anytime. The average temperature will dip down to 2 to 4 Degrees Celsius. Night temperatures will remain below 0 and the day’s maximum will be around 17 Degrees Celsius.

It does not snow in Srinagar until late December. For most of the month, it will just be dry and cold weather. Snowfall occurs sometimes towards the end of December or early January.

So based on the information above, the months of January, February, April, September, and early October can be called the best time to visit Srinagar.

Visiting around Republic Day, Independence Day, Amarnath Yatra, in the month of Ramzan, and in the weeks of Eid is not the best choice of time for being in the valley. Let us talk about this a little more.

Independence day in Srinagar

Now since we were just talking about July and August not being a good time, another factor to consider here would be independence day.

This is the time when there is tons of security all around and the chances of violent protests are at maximum.

If you were thinking of August, then try not to plan your trip in the first half of the month; or at least avoid the week of the 15th of August. Let Independence day pass and make your plans for the latter half of the month.

Amarnath Yatra

This is another reason why you would want to avoid visiting in June, July, or August. Apart from the monsoon season and unpredictable rains, it is also the time of Amarnath Yatra which brings thousands of pilgrims to the valley.

It can get crowded with additional security measures causing roadblocks. If you are someone who tends to stay away from the crowd then this is not the best of times for you.

Accommodation can also become a challenge at this time, especially in Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

Republic Day in Srinagar

It will be the same deal as Independence day. Try to avoid visiting in the second half of the month or at least the week of Republic day.

Ramzan in Srinagar

The majority of the people in Srinagar are Muslims. This means that the city will largely remain closed during the entire month of Ramzan which makes it a really bad time to be visiting Kashmir.

Eid in Srinagar

It will be pretty much the same situation as that of Ramzan, whether it is Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid-ul-Zuha (meethi Eid and Bakra-Eid).

Several of the hotels remain completely shut down the entire week of Eid as their staff goes home for festive celebrations. The ones that will remain open will be functioning with very less staff.

Don’t be surprised if you found that the hotel was open but there was no one to cook or clean the room for you. You may find a room in the hotel but will have to eat outside.

best time to visit srinagar

Best Season to Visit Srinagar

Last but not least, let us talk a bit in terms of the different seasons in Kashmir. The greatest thing about Srinagar is that out here, every season has its own charm.

Come winter, the place turns into a winter wonderland with temperatures dropping as far as -10 degrees Celsius. It is the time when the beautiful Dal lake freezes over completely and becomes a playground for cricket matches.

It is also the time when people from all over the country arrive here to witness beautiful snow-covered valleys. The slopes of nearby Gulmarg see an ambush of skiers.

With that being said, too cold is not really everyone’s cup of tea. Most people would prefer a moderate enough climate due to which, the months from April to June are widely considered the most popular time for tourists.

Weather in these months is very pleasant with temperatures ranging between 10 degrees to 30 degrees Celsius.

Spring season arrives here in April and in the first two weeks of the month, you can also see the dazzling rainbow colors of the Tulip Festival in Srinagar.

This is the time when the famous Tulip garden of Srinagar, which is also Asia’s largest tulip garden, is at its full blossom.

Monsoon Season in Srinagar

Monsoon arrives here towards late June or early July and can very well last throughout August. Historically and in an ideal world, Srinagar should actually be getting very moderate rainfall but that is no longer the case, thanks to all the global warming.

The 2014 floods of Kashmir and a flood-like situation in 2018 stand witness to this face. Therefore it can be a good time to avoid visiting Srinagar.

Monsoon however does leave behind lush green valleys making it a photographer’s delight. So if greenery is on your mind then try planning a trip towards the second half of August or early September.

By this time, the monsoon would have subsided but plenty of green would still be around. The vistas at this time are mesmerizing which makes these few weeks another great time to visit Srinagar.

Autumn Season in Srinagar

The Autumn season begins towards the end of September turning the entire valley golden; presenting all imaginable hues of yellow, gold, and orange.

It is often considered a magical time to be here with pleasantly cold nights, misty mornings, red-carpeted gardens, and the rustle of fallen leaves.

The magic however mostly remains till October and it kind of turns a bit dull in November. Come December, it can then snow in the valley anytime.

In order to summarize it, let me provide a brief overview of the best time to visit Srinagar.

Best Time to Visit Srinagar for snow

The best time to visit Srinagar for snowfall will be the month of February. You can come here in January as well but in February, the amount of snow on the ground will be greater.

Best Time to Visit Srinagar for Honeymoon

It will actually depend on when you got married but the best time to visit Srinagar for your Honeymoon would be either February, March, April, or September.

Best Time to visit Srinagar Pahalgam Gulmarg

The months of February, Late August, and early September will be the best time to plan a trip to Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg. Gulmarg gets too crowded in April and May and then Pahalgam gets crowded in June and July due to Amarnath Yatra.

Best Time to Visit Srinagar and Leh

Any time between May till September is good enough if you want to visit both Srinagar and Leh. Do keep a check on the weather though in Monsoon season and if it was raining heavily, then postpone your trip by a few weeks.

Best Time to visit Vaishno Devi and Srinagar

I will say early October is the best time to visit if both Vaishno Devi and Srinagar were on your mind. That way, you get to be here during Navratras. Apart from October, the months of April, May, and September also are equally good.

I hope the information above on the best time to visit Srinagar was of help. If you have any questions, you can  contact me on Instagram  and I will be happy to answer. You can also consider  subscribing to my YouTube channel  and asking a question there.

Very informative article and thank you very much. I planned a trip to Srinagar in the month of April 2023, a photography tour. Was think whether is worthwhile to take up an optional day tour to Aru or Betaab Valley from Pahalgam during one of the “free & easy” day. Or I should stay back and explore more on Pahalgam itself. I have about 3 days in Pahalgam and this is my first visit to this area. Your valuable advice is much appreciated. Thank you very much. .

If you have 3 days in hand then yes, definitely go for a drive towards Aru and Betaab. There is nothing in Pahalgam itself as such.

A Guide to Srinagar: Things To Do, See, and Eat

ABUNDANCE – it’s the first word that strikes me when I step foot into Kashmir . It’s summer and the orchards are in full bloom. Hundreds of luscious red apples dangle precariously off trees. Juicy peaches are being harvested. Walnuts are beginning to ripen in a nearby field. Hyacinths, irises and amaranth flowers line roads that lead to snow-clad mountains. Elsewhere Kashmir’s iconic Chinar trees provide resplendent shade to passers-by.

Chinar trees Srinagar Lalit Grand Palace

Here in Kashmir nature has an identity all its own. It enthralls and seduces in equal measures. If you fly to Srinagar, you will notice that it is easy to find incredible panoramas and drives everywhere you go. We’ve included some of our favourite suggestions for things to do in Srinagar in this article. Whatever you choose,  don’t forget to take the time to talk to the people and listen to their stories . Kashmiris are warm and hospitable and regale visitors with sumptuous stories by the dozen. Of course, there is an unavoidable subtext of political conflicts and violence that mars many a tale, but that is what makes interactions with locals in Kashmir so enlightening. In fact these interactions will definitely be the highlight of your trip to Srinagar.

Things to see and do in Srinagar

Srinagar offers a plethora of scenic and experiential excursions – pick and choose the ones you like. Here is a list of things to see and do in Srinagar:

A sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake

A shikara ride on Dal Lake is a no brainer. Kitschy boats, bedecked with colourful carpets and rugs, welcome visitors to Kashmir. We suggest going for a ride during the evening so you can start when the sky is still blue and spot reflections of surrounding mountains and plans  in the water and stick around till the sun sets. We visited Srinagar with my mom and this was one of her favourite things to do in Srinagar.

Reflections in Dal Lake

Visit Pari Mahal

This charming monument is literally known as the abode of the fairies in local parlance. It’s easy to see why! The multi-tiered monument and its grounds boast of a spectacular view of the valley. You can see the entire city of Srinagar, its lakes, and surrounding meadows from this vantage point.

Pari Mahal in Srinagar overlooking the city of Srinagar

Tulips and Gardens

Srinagar is home to Asia’s largest Tulip Garden. The flowers are in full bloom only for a short time during the months of March and April, so time your visit accordingly. They make for some spectacular views. But there is no shortage of scenic botanical gardens at other times of the year either – pencil Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Garden, or Chashme Shahi Garden into your itinerary and you won’t be disappointed!

Hazratbal Shrine

This dainty white shrine is located right by the shores of Dal Lake. Drop by on a weekday and you’ll be surprised at how peaceful it is! Girls – make sure you carry something to cover your head and wear something that covers your elbows and knees. Otherwise, you might be denied entry!

Floating Market on Dal Lake

If you do not mind setting up your alarm for an unearthly hour, then visit the floating vegetable and flower market at Dal Lake at sunrise. This bustling marketplace is truly unique because vendors set up shop in boats and customers arrive by boat as well. Since this is one of the most popular experiences for tourists, expect to shell out around INR 2000-2500 (£25-30) for this experience.

A shikara ride on Nigeen Lake

If you’re not an early riser, then head to Nigeen Lake later in the day. A number of flower vendors from the floating market drift to Nigeen Lake around 8 am. Pick up a bunch for your hotel room or just go on a boat ride in a colourful  shikara  as you watch miscellaneous vendors and boatsmen go about their day. Nigeen Lake provides the perfect opportunity to escape the omniscient touristy hordes at Dal Lake.

A gander in apple orchards

If you enjoy experiential holidays, then try visiting Kashmir during summer months. During the months of July & August, you will be able to witness orchards in full bloom. Expect hundreds of trees laden with apples. Book a cooking class conducted in the midst of apple orchards or just pack a picnic and spend a languorous day under the Kashmiri sun.

Day Trips From Srinagar

If you are in Srinagar for a city break, then make sure you pencil in a couple of day trips in your itinerary. There is no shortage of scenic drives in the area. You could literally drive in any direction and be spellbound by the nature beauty of Kashmir. Here are a couple of our favourite day trips from Srinagar – pick the ones that suit your tastes best:

Sonmarg literally translates to Meadow of Gold and it truly lives up to that name. A 2 hour drive, peppered with little villages and scenic waterfalls, leads to Sonmarg. The picturesque valley is popular with both locals and tourists, so expect a crowd during summer months. If you have a day or two to spare, then you could also hike to the gorgeous Vishansar Lake in Sonmarg.

Couple enjoying the peace at Sonmarg near Srinagar

If you have a soft spot for offbeat places that do not feature on most tourists’ itineraries, then head to Yousmarg . Hundreds of pine trees and striking pastures frame this quiet and picturesque meadow. Yousmarg is only 50 kilometres from Srinagar, so it makes for the perfect day trip from the city.

srinagar tourism in december

Gulmarg is one of Kashmir’s most iconic spots and it is 1.5 hours away from Srinagar. It boasts of an impressive gondola ride that offers panoramic views of the snow-clad Himalayas. If you’re there during winter months, don’t forget to sample the skiing slopes at Gulmarg. You can read more about our time in Gulmarg in our article: road trip to Leh Ladakh .

Couple on top of Gondola in Gulmarg near Srinagar

The bustling town offers several sightseeing opportunities. We love the idyllic Aru Valley in the area.

Dachigam National Park

Dachigam National Park is less than 25 kilometres away from Srinagar. It’s idyllic environs aren’t the only draw here. It’s possible to spot the elusive Kashmir Stag, Black Bears, and dozens of colourful birds. However tourists need a special permit to enter the area, so you need to plan ahead if you intend on venturing to Dachigam.

Choosing Accommodation in Srinagar

Srinagar has a range of accommodation to cater to all budgets . As you probably know, we love luxurious and experiential holidays, so we chose to stay at The Lalit Grand Palace. As the name suggests, the hotel offers visitors a chance to stay at a refurbished palace – expect ornate furnishings, decadent chandeliers, and ornate staircases. If you’re not one for traditional tapestries and old-world charm, you can also choose a room in the modern wing. Expect contemporary furnishing and stunning views of the surrounding mountains here. We chose the latter and found ourselves lounging in our patio on the daily.

Palace rooms in Lalit Grand Palace Srinagar

The Lalit Grand Palace is less than a 5 minute walk from Dal Lake, so it’s easy to head to the lake every evening at sunset or sunrise. But that isn’t even the highlight of a stay here. The rooms are positioned amidst 37 acres of private orchards and gardens. It is easy to spend entire days wondering through orchards laden with apples during summer months or bare boned trees, covered with powdery snow, during winter months. If you want to work up an appetite, go for a walk in their sprawling gardens or check out their fitness centre.

Gardens at Lalit Grand Palace Srinagar overlooking Dal Lake

Dining was a definite highlight of our stay at The Lalit Grand Palace. The menus offer a variety of culinary options ranging from Oriental specialities to Kashmiri delights. We tried everything but as you probably know – we’re fruit eaters! So we loved the farm-to-fork concept the hotel promotes. Most of the food that is served at the hotel grows right there. Cue the most sumptuous fresh produce we’ve had in months – fruit juices squeezed fresh in front of our eyes, salads made from iceberg lettuce and herbs grown at the hotel, soups made from tomatoes grown on the property, and desserts garnished with walnuts from trees we picnicked under.  And all this in an alfresco-setting that would put some of the world’s best restaurants to shame.

Things to eat in Srinagar

Sampling local food is an important part of experiencing Kashmiri culture because a lot of ingredients used in Kashmiri cuisine are native to the area and secrete tales about the people and the culture. Take, for instance,  nadru  (lotus stem) found in abundance in the lakes of the region or  haaq  – unique leafy greens found only in Kashmir.

Here’s a list of foods and culinary experiences you must sample when you are in Srinagar. Expect a generous serving of white rice with everything! Let’s go:

  • Wazwan  : No mention of Kashmiri food would be complete without  Wazwan . Traditionally, it refers to an elaborate feast, featuring choicest delicacies, prepared specially for weddings and special occasions. But you will spot  Wazwan  tasting platters on most restaurant menus. Think of it as an introduction to Kashmiri food, a rustic dégustation menu curated by the head chef if you may. This is the perfect way to sample a series of local delicacies, ending with the indulgent  gustaba , meatballs in a creamy yogurt-based sauce.
  • Rogan josh : If you’re going the à la carte route, start with  Rogan Josh . Flavourful curried lamb, which can be found all over India but tastes very different in Kashmir. It comes packed with flavour and with the slightest bit of gravy.
  • Tuji  – Tuji isn’t just a dish, it’s an entire experience in itself. Moreish morsels of BBQ’d meats are served with steaming hot  sheer chai  (a novel pink coloured flavourful tea)   and traditional breads by the shores of the iconic Dal Lake. Friends and families congregate to partake in the ritual of snacking and gossip and laughter inevitably ensues.
  • Haaq saag : A staple at ceremonies and occasions, this is a simple dish made with Kashmiri leafy greens, mustard oil, and salt.
  • Nadru Palak : Another staple at dinner tables in the region, this is spinach cooked with lotus stem and a couple of Indian spices such as chilli and asafoetida . If you don’t enjoy greens, you could also try  Nadru Yakni  (lotus stem in a yogurt sauce)
  • Tabak maaz : Kashmiri-style lamb ribs, marinated with local spices and milk, and fried. This indulgent delicacy is extremely popular with locals.
  • Phirni : If you have a sweet tooth, do not leave the area without trying a bowl (or two) of  phirni . This indulgent dessert is made from ground rice, cream, milk, sugar, cardamon, and a variety of nuts including almonds and pistachios. It is delicately flavoured with rose essence which lends it an inimitable flavour.
  • Shufta : This is truly as indulgent as it gets.  Shufta  is a creamy dessert made with generous amounts of sugar, dried fruits, and nuts alongside a dash of pepper and cardamon. It is said to induce warmth on the coldest of days!
  • Kahwa : Whether you opt for Wazwan or go the à la carte route, one thing is for sure. Kashmiri food will leave you feeling satiated but drowsy. It’s perfect to wash it all down with a cup of  Kahwa –  this flavourful concoction is made with green tea, saffron, and spices and serves with a generous sprinkling of slices almonds. It has dozens of health benefits and is said to be excellent for digestion, weight loss, and building immunity. It can also help warm you up on the coldest of days!
  • On the subject of tea, there are a few quirky cafés in Srinagar, which are perfect for a cuppa with friends or family. Check out  Chai Jaai ,  Books and Bricks , or the Game of Thrones themed  Winterfell Cafe  by the shores of Dal Lake.

My husbands dream is to visit Kashmir .. so don’t want to disappoint him if everything is closed by the time we go .. Am planning a 7 days trip to Srinagar ➡️Gulmarg➡️Sonamarg➡️Kargil

Am wandering if the high way from Srinagar to Sonamarg and Kargil remains open during Dec 10.. also do we need any special permissions to visits kargil ?? Also could you please suggest some good hotels in sonamarg and Gulmarg .. I know am asking you too many questions .. sorry for that ?

Hey Manasa -Yes December is a great time but road conditions change from year to year depending on snowfall. Would suggest The Khyber in Gulmarg. It’s beautiful especially during winter months. And you don’t need any special permission to visit Kargil 🙂

Hi did u travel in December to Srinagar .. can u share your experience .. places u visited .. hotel u stayed

Hey! nice informative post.. as always! I’m planning a trip here this May with family. Could you please tell how many days would suffice?

Hope you had a great trip. For someone else who might be looking for the answer, we’d suggest 4 nights at Lalit Srinagar 🙂

Hey Savi and Vid,

Srinagar is absolutely soo beautiful and you have made it more from your photos. I have visited two times before in Kashmir and wasn’t able to witness the apple orchards. As you have mentioned that you have visited during summers, don’t know but I wasn’t able to see the apple orchards. What time do you recommend to witness the apple orchards in full bloom?

We were there in August so I believe that is a good time to see apple orchards.

Awesome post. Great content, its true that Srinagar is the most popular hill station in India. Well done. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful blog. 🙂

Can we visit Kashmir in December? And what would be the itenary for December

Hi Navita – yes you can visit Kashmir in December and the itinerary will be the same. Just make sure you check the political situation before travelling to Kashmir 🙂

Beautiful post and description as always! I’m planning on visiting during the Christmas break, can you please give me an insight of how Kashmir will be during that time?

Wow… very nice…..you have portrayed the places in a very good way….. All these are really a treat to eyes…

Wow, the pictures in this post are smashing. Till now my husband and I did not have Srinagar in our bucket list, but we surely will visit Srinagar one day. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Do you have any suggestion for less expensive accommodation in Srinagar?

Hey Merina – unfortunately we wouldn’t recommend any mid-range hotels that we’ve stayed in so far as we didn’t enjoy them. However you can find some really nice apartments on Air BnB in the area 🙂

I’m planning a trip here this May or June with family. Could you please tell how many days would suffice? I am exciting Srinagar is absolutely soo beautiful and you have made it more from your photos. Thanks u for share information about post

Hi 4 days would be great if you’re planning to visit Srinagar in May 🙂

Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work, and i love srinagar

I am planning for a week-long honeymoon in Kashmir in the end of February. Would I be able to move around Srinagar or should I just look forward to enjoy the weather and remain stationed at some nice property because of the weather in February? I am assuming a snowy holiday.

Hey Kush – you can easily move around Srinagar as all local vehicles are equipped for the weather, no problem 🙂

Your pics are superb. In which time of the year you visited Srinagar?

Hey Sunil – most of these photos are from the month of July 🙂

Hi, Your pics are awesome along with detailed info. I was planning in april month. Will it be wise to visit kashmir in month of april? How about covid, since the cases are raising will it affect our planning? Please share a light on this.

Hi Rushali – April is a great month to visit but do beware that snow has melted and everything is still quite bare and not so green at the time. In sofar as Covid restrictions, you just need to carry a negative RT PCR test with you, that’s all 🙂

Is first week of August a good time to visit Kashmir ? If not, can you please suggest a few destinations in India to visit at that time.

Yes, first week of August is a good time to visit Kashmir (we visited around the same time) 🙂

We are planning to visit Srinagar and places around in the 2nd/3rd week of October along with my 6 year old. Is it a good time to visit? Is there any link where I can get a sense of how Srinagar / Gulmarg / Sonmarg look like during this time of the year?

Regards, Sandeep

Yes it is a good time to visit as the valley is beautiful in autumn

Very valuable information, it is not at all blogs that we find this, I was looking for something like that and found it here.

Thank you for the blog its very helpful

Very informative article, useful information for planning the trip in future. What would be the best time to visit Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar?

Hi Savi and Vid, Firstly, I would like to tell you that you guys are amazing. I just love the way you convey your travel stories. Makes me wanna go to all the places with my partner. ? I’m travelling to Kashmir next month with my family. So, had to read this article and it’s really very informative. Will try to cover all recommended spots. Thanks for sharing.

Warm regards Karishma.

Beautiful post, thanks for sharing

Amazing article. Thanks for sharing with us!

Hey!. I was interesting in visiting Kashmir since forever. Time and again, I start surfing around my options. and I love pictures so having such a scenic spot is a jackpot. I have a curious question though. How do you guys manage taking such wonderful shots, when both of you are in frame. Who does that for you. and What camera would you recommend for a beginner but enthusiast for such a click worthy location.

An admirer of your work and attitude towards life.

Thanks Pooja – We use a tripod or ask a friend/guide if there is someone to help us 🙂 As for cameras, I truly think investing in a good phone is more than enough these days unless you’re going for something a phone just cannot photograph – eg a wildlife safari 🙂

well, you have missed the hidden gem in Kashmir that know as Doothpathri.

Hi guys, Great article, thanks for sharing. We are planning to visit Kashmir in mid/late March. Would 5-7 days be sufficient to cover Srinagar, Pahalgam, Sonmarg and Gulmarg? Presuming Srinagar can be covered in 2 days tops.

Thanks again!

Hi Yes it’s doable but keep at least 7 days total as driving can take time, especially in March. Also check with locals if roads are open or not as sometimes they can be snowed under

Best Time To Visit Srinagar

Plan your trip during best season to experience the best of this stunning destination

The best time to visit Srinagar is from April to September. During this time, the whole place is covered with blossoms and looks aesthetically beautiful. Compared to the rest of the places in the country it is quite pleasant in Srinagar during summer which provides much-needed relief from heat and sweating. Not too cold and not too hot, the summer season is the best time to visit Srinagar . One can visit all the major attractions and enjoy the pleasant climate too, between the months of April to October. Not to forget, one of the major attractions in Srinagar , the Tulip Garden , is in full bloom during the month of April. However, the best time to visit Srinagar for snow is from October to March.

Let's take a season-wise look below for the ideal time to visit Srinagar:

April to June (14°C to 30°C): The best season to visit Srinagar is definitely the summer season when the main festival of the place which is the Tulip festival also takes place. Srinagar becomes a whole new charming place in the summer months from April to June. The temperature is quite pleasant and ranges between 14°C to 30°C.

June to September: Monsoon season is not the best time to visit Srinagar . Srinagar hardly witnesses any rain in a particular season, so there is no monsoon season as such. There is autumn instead of monsoon. It is not a good time to plan a visit to Srinagar as there won’t be much for sightseeing and also the natural beauty is less charming as compared to other seasons.

October to March (-2°C to 10°C): Winter is the best time to visit Srinagar for snow. Those who love the white sheet of snow and the snow adventures, then this is the perfect time to go for an excursion to Srinagar. The average temperature during this time is -2°C to 10°C. Some adventures to try out are snowboarding, skiing, walking the Chadar lake trek etc.

Climate in Srinagar

Summer season in srinagar.

Summer is sweaty, dusty, and irritable for most of us. To escape the intolerable heat of the cities, most families go off to regions lying at a higher altitude. One such place is Srinagar. An event which is not to be missed during this period is the Tulip Festival which takes place in the first two weeks of April. Asia’s largest Tulip garden is in its full bloom at this time and provides eye catching sights with dazzling rainbow colors of the tulip flowers. Also summer would be the best time to visit Srinagar for honeymoon as well.

Monsoon Season in Srinagar

The geographical location of Srinagar is such that it does not have a typical monsoon season. There is hardly any rain and the showers last for a maximum of 10 minutes. However, Srinagar does witness autumn, which is quite uncommon in the Indian subcontinent. This is most undesirable time to visit Srinagar as it does not provide much scope for travelers to explore the popular destinations or to go out for sightseeing. The localites too prefer to stay indoors during this season.

Each season carries a charm of its own during which, the capital city of Srinagar, looks and feels like a heaven on Earth. To make the most of it, the best and the most popular season is that of summer.

Winter Season in Srinagar

For skiers and lovers of snowfall, the best time to visit Srinagar to see snowfall is between October to March. One can enjoy a winter marvel that Srinagar turns into, with temperatures dropping to as low as minus 10 degree Celsius. However, the much talked about and popular Shikara ride would have to go off the list because the Dal Lake gets frozen. For skiers, the slopes of Gulmarg become a paradise during the winter season. Others can enjoy the view of the snow covered slopes and mountains, and even indulge in games like snow balling, rolling through the snow, making a snowman and what not! However, for those who aren’t fans of chilling cold and have a low resistance power to such climate, this isn’t the best time to visit Srinagar.
