Our new ranking of every PGA Tour course—from best to worst

There are plenty of reasons why a course is selected to host a PGA Tour event beyond its architectural merits. Of course, the layout must sufficiently test the best players in the world, but the regional market, logistics and history all play important roles in landing a tour event as well.

That said, it’s no secret the tour travels to many of our country’s finest courses. Of the 32 events played in the United States during the 2024 PGA Tour season, 16 are currently ranked on at least one of Golf Digest's national rankings— America's 100 Greatest , Second 100 Greatest and 100 Greatest Public .

In this guide, we rank the 32 U.S. courses that will host a PGA Tour event or major championship this season, based on the scores from our 1,800 course-ranking panelists. (This list only includes events played in the U.S.—there are five international events scheduled this season. Also note that we only rank the primary course at multi-course events such as Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach.)

You might be surprised how the architectural merits of a layout don’t always align with the prestige of the tour event played there. Our panelists evaluate courses on seven scoring criteria, ranging from Shot Options and Layout Variety to Conditioning and Aesthetics .

Scroll on for the complete ranking, and be sure to click through to each individual course page for bonus photography and reviews from our course panelists. We also encourage you to leave your own ratings on the courses you’ve played … so you can make your case for why a course should be higher or lower on our rankings.

1. Augusta National Golf Club (Masters Tournament)

Augusta National Golf Club

Augusta National Golf Club

Augusta, ga.

  • 100 Greatest
  • Best In State

There will be no surprise with the No. 1 course on this list. Augusta National has been ranked first, second or third on our biennial America's 100 Greatest Courses ranking in each edition. The club made a significant change in the fall of 2022, lengthening the par-5 13th hole by about 30 yards . No club has tinkered with its golf course as often or as effectively over the decades as has Augusta National Golf Club, mainly to keep it competitive for the annual Masters Tournament, an event it has conducted since 1934, with time off during WWII. All that tinkering has resulted in an amalgamation of design ideas, with a routing by Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones, some Perry Maxwell greens, some Trent Jones water hazards, some Jack Nicklaus mounds and swales and, most recently, extensive rebunkering and tree planting by Tom Fazio. The tinkering continued in the summer of 2018 as the club lengthened the par-4 fifth by extending its back tee on newly acquired land. Soon to come, the lengthening of the famed par-5 13th.

Kapalua: Plantation

Kapalua: Plantation

Lahaina, hi.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:  Most golf fans are familiar with Kapalua Golf Club’s Plantation Course, home of the PGA Tour's opening event each year. Located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Maui, the Plantation was built from open, windswept pineapple fields on the pronounced slope of a volcano and is irrigated by sprinklers pressured solely by gravity. As the first design collaboration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it unveiled their joint admiration for old-style courses. The blind drive on the fourth, the cut-the-corner drives on the fifth and sixth are all based on tee shots found at National Golf Links. So, too, are its punchbowl green and strings of diagonal bunkers. It's also a massive course, built on a huge scale, Coore says, to accommodate the wind and the slope and the fact that it gets mostly resort play.

Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge: Challenger/Champion

Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge: Challenger/Champion

Orlando, fl.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:  I've always been fascinated by the design of Bay Hill, Arnold Palmer's home course for over 45 years (although Tiger Woods owns it, competitively-speaking, as he's won there eight times.) For one thing, it's rather hilly, a rarity in Florida (although not in the Orlando market) and dotted with sinkhole ponds incorporated in the design in dramatic ways.

I always thought the wrap-around-a-lake par-5 sixth was Dick Wilson's version of Robert Trent Jones's decade-older 13th at The Dunes Club at Myrtle Beach. Each of the two rivals had claimed the other was always stealing his ideas. But the hole I like best at Bay Hill is the par-4 eighth, a lovely dogleg-right with a diagonal green perched above a small circular pond. OK, I admit that it reminds me of the sixth at Hazeltine National, another Trent Jones product, but I don't think Wilson picked Trent's pocket on this one, as both courses were built about the same time, in the early 1960s.

One of five courses at PGA National, the Champion Course has hosted the Honda Classic since 2007. (The event dates back to 1972, though with Honda pulling out as a tournament sponsor, the event is in question going forward.) Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for tournament play, Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course in 2014, creating the infamous three-hole stretch aptly named "The Bear Trap." Routinely one of the toughest courses on tour, The Champion is a true ball-striking test that plays a lot differently than most courses, where winning scores push over 20 under par.

6 Best Training Programs And Courses For Tour Guides

Carla Vianna

Your tour guides are the face of your company. They’re the ones interacting with your guests on a day-to-day basis and making sure they’re having the best experience possible.

If you want to provide your guests with excellent service, you might want to consider investing in specialized tour guide training. There are a number of programs to choose from, from beginner courses that teach the basics of guiding to more advanced certifications that fully prepare a guide for every kind of tour.

The travel landscape is constantly changing, and keeping your guides up-to-date on the latest trends will help you better meet your guest’s expectations.

In this post, you’ll learn why investing in additional training for your tour guides is a good idea — plus six unique programs to consider.

Why should you invest in training for your tour guides?

What qualities should a tour guide have.

  • 6 best training programs and courses for tour guides.

1.  TripSchool

  • 2.  International Tour Management Institute

3.  Be a Better Guide

4.  international guide academy.

  • 5.  EastguidesWest

6.  Good Tourism Institute

Tour guide training programs help guides hone in on a number of important skills, including their storytelling capabilities and how to solve problems on a tour. Courses on public speaking and group psychology can feel more confident during their tours. In turn, they’ll provide a better experience.

Courses that introduce guides to real-life scenarios and have them work their way through them can be especially useful for those who have never worked as a guide before.

In other words, these training programs specifically focus on developing the traits that make a “just OK” tour guide great.

Finally, additional training can also make your company more reputable. With a certification or two under their belt, your tour guides can make your company stand out from others in your area.

Remember that an excellent tour guide can leave a lasting impression on your guests and make them want to refer your company to their friends. A bad one can do just the opposite. Don’t you think that’s worth the investment?

An exceptional tour guide is an expert on their destination and the tours they’re leading.

They’re  also charismatic  and know how to connect with guests. The best tour guides love being around people, have superior communication skills, and understand how to read a crowd.

Tour guides should also have great storytelling skills. They should be able to package information into interesting narratives that capture your guests’ attention.

Finally, a great tour guide is always enthusiastic about the experience they’re leading. They know how to get guests excited about your tours and make sure they’re enjoying themselves throughout the whole experience.

6 best training programs and courses for tour guides.

Most training programs today are available online as well as in person. Whether you’re looking for destination-specific training or quick courses your guides can complete on the go, here are six of the best training programs available for tour guides.

TripSchool offers online courses as well as in-person destination training around the U.S. Co-founded by industry veterans Mitch Bach and Alan Armijo, the company is dedicated to helping both tour guides and operators offer travelers the best service possible.

Your guides can take several online courses with TripSchool, including:

  • Local Tour Guide & Experience Certificate:  a complete tour guide training program
  • Multi-Day Tour Director Certificate:  a program that’ll teach guides how to design memorable tour experiences
  • Start Your Own Tour Business:  a step-by-step guide to starting a travel business
  • Storytelling Mastery:  a program to help guides develop their storytelling skills
  • Student Tour Mastery:  a guide to working with students specifically

TripSchool also offers in-person training specific to destinations like San Francisco and New Orleans. There are even experience-based programs like “New England Fall Foliage” and “Southwest National Parks” that are tailored to guides operating in those segments.

2.  International Tour Management Institute

The International Tour Management Institute (ITMI) is a well-known program that provides training from experienced leaders in the tourism industry. The tourism school focuses on hands-on, in-person training, although online courses are also available.

ITMI offers one- to two-week online self-study programs, where tour guides can learn the fundamentals of being a travel leader. There’s also a five-week online group training program that features 10 live classes for local guides.

The tour director coaching and certification program is five weeks long and includes four days of in-person field training. This program allows guides to practice their skills in real life and teaches them how to handle situations that may arise domestically and internationally.

All of the courses also include training in socially responsible and environmentally conscious tourism.

Veteran tour guide Kelsey Tonner started the Be a Better Guide project to connect tour and activity entrepreneurs all over the world.

His Online Tourism Academy features practical training programs for tour guides and operators alike. All courses can be completed online and are also available on mobile. They include:

  • Create Unforgettable Tours:  A step-by-step program teaching guides or operators how to jumpstart their tour business.
  • Scale Your Tour Business:  A program teaching operators how to grow their business.
  • Entertain and Captivate:  Teaches tour guides how to use storytelling to captivate their guests.
  • Inspire Your Staff:  A course dedicated to honing skills like customer service, public speaking, people skills, storytelling, and more.

The academy has a growing community of over 17,000 members from 40+ countries around the world.

The International Guide Academy started in 1973 with courses in Australia, Hong Kong, and London. In 1988, the academy began offering courses in the U.S. The company expanded to Mexico in 2007 and to Canada in 2010.

Local tour guides can participate in both online or in-person courses that teach leadership, research, and public speaking skills. The academy caps its class sizes at 22 students, which allows for more individual attention during and after the program.

The academy also lets tour operators design custom curriculums that meet their company’s specific needs.

5.  EastguidesWest

East guides West offers training and consulting for tour operators and tour guides in unknown, underrated, and under-valued destinations around the world. The program also connects local tour companies and guides to larger, more well-known Western tour operators.

Tour guide training ranges from starter courses touching on everything you need to know to become a guide to more immersive multi-day, in-person programs. Several online courses are also available, including one on tour problem solving and another about keeping guests healthy.

The Good Tourism Institute places an emphasis on sustainable tourism, the goal being to make the tourism industry a better place for businesses and travelers alike.

The company is working on an online course that teaches how to offer unique experiences that benefit your local community. The course will focus on the latest trends in modern-day tourism, strategy development, office management, communication, and online marketing.

If you’re looking for a way to make your company stand out from others in your area, investing in extra tour guide training is the way to go. Each company on this list offers a variety of different training programs that can help your guides offer the best service possible.

tour guide training

Being a successful tour guide doesn’t happen overnight. You can’t just snap your fingers and wake up as Kelsey Tonner. If you want to differentiate your tour business from others, double your tips, and become a tour director one day, you have to improve your tour guide skills.

Of course, that might happen naturally as you gain experience over time — especially if you do a self-evaluation at the end of every tour. But one of the best and fastest ways to fine-tune your skills is to take a few tour guide training courses.

By learning directly from the experts, you can get insider tips on real-life scenarios so that you know how to lead tours like a pro, which will help you feel more competent and confident as a tour guide. Not to mention, spruce up your LinkedIn profile with a snazzy tour guide certification to add credibility to your skillset.

So, where can you get started? We break down the top 4 tour guide training programs in the industry right now. Specifically, those that offer online courses, so that you can level up your tour guide skills in your pajamas during this unsolicited downtime.

(P.S. if you are a tour operator reading this, you can better support your tour guides by offering intensive, in-house tour guide training and encouraging professional development with the following courses below)

Top tour guide training courses

1. TripSchool

If Shane Whaley from Tourpreneur gives something his stamp of approval, you know it has to be good. After taking one of the TripSchool workshops, Shane shared that the learning experience was intense , brutally honest , no sugar coating , and well worth the time and money . (You can see the full review in the Tourpreneur Approved Directory ).

In other words, TripSchool isn’t kidding around. Combining over 40 years of experience in the industry, the founders, Mitch Bach and Alan Armijo, are passionate about helping tour guides grow their skills based on everything they’ve learned first-hand. In fact, they’re often described as the Dynamic Duo by their long list of graduates.

With TripSchool, you can choose your own training adventure. Between live, interactive workshops, self-paced online courses, and in-person classes, there’s an option for almost any learning style. TripSchool also has a library of tour guide handbooks , written by tour guides, that provide insight on how to lead tours in the most in-demand tourist hot spots of the United States.

Tour Director and Guide Certification by TripSchool

For new tour guides, you might want to start with the Tour Director & Guide Certification . In this course, you’ll learn how to improve your tour guide skills by completing a three-step process:

  • Online course: 10 days of covering essential terminology and concepts behind tour directing
  • Boot camp: 6 days of applying what you learned to the field with a small class size
  • Work and mentorship: TripSchool won’t leave you hanging. After completing the course, you’ll get access to continued education and graduate support to help you succeed in your career

That’s not all, TripSchool also offers a Getting Hired Series, with real critiques from tour operators on what they look for in a resume and interview, as well as short destination training sessions (2-3 hours of jam-packed tips). I can go on and on; you’ll just have to see yourself by checking out the Online Tourism Training Library .

2. International Tour Management Institute

Around since 1976, the International Tour Management Institu t e (ITMI) is one of the longest-running tour training programs in the industry. Over 8,000 tour guides and travel leaders have graduated from ITMI, who, as alumni, enjoy exclusive access to an online community of tour professionals, the industry’s largest database of tour resources, and the annual ITMI Symposium — a networking and educational event.

Like the TripSchool, ITMI’s Tour Certification Program breaks up the curriculum into three sections over the course of two months:

8-week tour leadership training experience by International Management Institute

  • Tour Leading Fundamentals: learn all about the key concepts and skills required in the field (3 weeks of online classes and assignments)
  • Learning Lab: spend a full week with your classmates in-destination, and apply what you learned to practical, real-life scenarios (8-day in-person intensive training)
  • Career Launchpad: get the support you need with a career action plan and online coaching (3 weeks of one-on-one sessions)

ITMI values the entire program at over $14,000, but tuition is less than half of that. If you’re unsure about investing that much money, think of it like a college degree. An ITMI certificate is recognized internationally, and they partner with over 1,000 tour companies worldwide, so they can help jumpstart your career with suitable job opportunities.

Don’t wait to apply for admission . ITMI only takes 175 students into the certification program. Or check out what other courses they offer, like the Student Tour or National Parks Master Class. (P.S. if you’re a tour operator, you can work with ITMI to design a customized training program for your tour guides).

3. International Guide Academy

Like ITMI, the International Guide Academy (IGA) has been around for a long time. First established in 1973, IGA has 47 years of experience training tour guides and directors in four continents, including places like Australia, Hong Kong, and even at sea on a cruise ship.

IGA offers both a tour director and tour guide course, which you can take back to back and receive a tuition discount. It’s important to note that tour guides and tour directors require different knowledge and training, so being able to get both certifications at a lower cost is a double whammy.

Tour Guide 7-day class by International Guide Academy

In just seven days, the Tour Guide Class goes over everything you need to know, including travel industry terminology, conduct and ethics, commentary skills, your role as a local expert , and so much more. As a graduate, you also receive lifetime job placement assistance and access to a detailed list of 200+ tour operators and their contact information.

With instructors from all over the world and different cultural backgrounds, IGA is looking to expand its number of international locations where you can do your training. But for now, they’re holding the tour guide programs entirely online, so be sure to check their website for upcoming class dates.

4. EastguidesWest

Accredited by  ILM  — Institute of Leadership & Management —  EastguidesWest  offers coaching for tour leaders worldwide, especially remote and emerging destinations. Founded by two tour directors who are both ITMI-certified, Sjannie Hulsman-Louwers and Barnaby Davies strive to make tourism education more accessible to all by passing on their knowledge and expertise online and on-site.

While they invested thousands in their own tourism training, they generously share their insights and how-to at a fraction of the cost in as little as three days. With a primary focus on Western tourism expectations and sustainability, EastguidesWest’s  field training  covers  cultural sensitivity , body language and public speaking, pricing with a business mindset, personalized guest attention, and so much more.

EastguidesWest online tour guide training programs

Now, don’t worry if you can’t travel for training. EastguidesWest also has budget-friendly  online tour guide courses  you can work through on your own time, which are currently on sale due to COVID-19. There are twelve courses in total (with more to come), so that’s twelve certifications to spice up your resume and help you land a job with a tour operator.

Speaking of, EastguidesWest connects local tour guides to Western tour operators through an ever-growing global network of tourism professionals. Not to mention, they’ve recently launched a program to help tour guides in need where tour guides can get support from donations. So if you could use some assistance paying for basic necessities right now, send in your tour guide crisis application form.

Other fantastic courses for tour guides

Female getting tour guide certification online in the back of camper van

We already know that tour guides wear many hats. They must know how to make a commentary in tour guiding , handle large groups, and have exceptional time management and navigational abilities. But what really makes a tour guide stand out to both tour operators and their guests? Being prepared for almost anything that comes your way with a diverse skillset.

So, it’s good to take courses outside of guiding to become a more well-rounded and successful tour guide. Here are a few ideas to start you off:

  • Improvisation: tour guides have to be on their toes from check-in to check-out. Learn how to keep the funny tour guide jokes going in-between your scripted bits by taking on online class with Second City Works — the largest school of improvisation and sketch comedy in the world.
  • Public speaking: most of the above tour guide courses will go over effective techniques here, but if you want to fine-tune your public speaking skills to make the tour less of a presentation and more of a conversation, consider taking this LinkedIn course .
  • Marketing: many tour operators have enough on their plate already, and could always use some marketing help. Show how invaluable you can be to the operation’s success by helping to grow its online presence. The Tourism Tribe offers a bunch of affordable digital marketing courses for the tourism industry, including Blogging for Tourism , Facebook Ads 101 , and a short Instagram workshop .
  • Videography: tour operators love getting their hands on content to attract and engage social media followers. Help them out by getting incredible footage of their tours (ones you aren’t leading). Here’s an excellent cinematography course on SkillShare with a focus on travel filmmaking.

Final thoughts

Don’t forget to check out if there are any certification programs offered in your country to improve your tour guide skills. And if you are looking to become an adventure guide, you’ll want to look for specific courses and licenses in your niche. Best of luck in your career as a tour guide!

Frankie capan iii shoots 58 on korn ferry tour, breaks scottie scheffler's course record, share this article.

It’s going to be a Thursday to remember for Frankie Capan III.

The 24-year-old shot 13-under 58 during the first round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas. The round included seven straight birdies on the back nine, a 29 on both sides and taking down World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler’s course record, which he set May 3, 2020.

His round started with a par before four consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-5. He added an eagle at the par-5 ninth to turn in 6-under 29.

On the back nine, the circles added up.

One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven in a row before he finally made par at the par-4 17th. On the closing par-5 18th, his tee shot ended up in the fairway bunker, and he was unable to card another birdie for a 57.

Guess a 58 will have to do.

Texas Rangers Golf Club is a par-71 layout measuring 7,010 yards.

In February, Cristobal Del Solar became the first player in the history of professional golf to shoot 57 on a par-70 layout . Capan’s round is the 13th sub-60 score in Korn Ferry Tour history .

In 2019,  David Carey shot 11-under 57 on the Alps Tour at the Cervino Open .

With a pair of top-10 finishes coming into the Veritex Bank Championship, Capan was finding his rhythm. Hard to imagine he pictured a start like he put together Thursday.

PGA Tour Event Disrupted by Alligator Casually Walking Across Tee Box

  • Author: Madison Williams

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is used to having a special four-legged friend show up from time. to time on the course.

The guest, an alligator, halted play at the 17th hole during Thursday's first round. The groups of Bronson Burgoon and Jhonattan Vegas, along with Paul Barjon and Samuel Stevens, had to wait at the tee box for the alligator to cross in front of them before they could tee off. The animal didn't stop them from taking a few practice swings, though.

This isn't the first time an alligator has showed up at the Zurich Classic. The PGA Tour commentators reminded viewers that the tournament was used to a three-legged alligator gracing the course fittingly named "Tripod."

Now on the tee, from New Orleans, Louisiana ... A GATOR 🐊 pic.twitter.com/N8wEJh1pQ1 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 25, 2024

The alligator walked across the tee box without causing any issues with any golfers or fans. But it definitely took its sweet time to walk across.

Both golfing duos ended up paring the 17th hole despite the distraction.

  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

Veritex Bank Championship - Round One, Frankie Capan III

Move over, Scottie Scheffler . Frankie Capan III has taken one of your records.

On Thursday, at the Veritex Bank Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour , Capan III recorded the second-lowest score in tour history with a 13-under 58.

His 58 set a new course record at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, which Scheffler previously held. The reigning Masters champion shot a 59 on this course on May 3, 2020, while playing with friends, as the PGA Tour was on hiatus due to COVID-19 at the time.

Meanwhile, Capan III bested Scheffler during the first round of an event on the Korn Ferry Tour, which has seen six different players card sub-60 rounds since the beginning of the 2023 season.

“It was a lot of fun out there. After the first four, five holes, I just felt really comfortable with my game and where I was at,” Capan III said.

Veritex Bank Championship

“I’ve been putting in a lot of work in the last few weeks and really the last few months just trying to dial a few things in. I think it all came together, which was nice. And then whenever you’re out there playing well and going low, I really just wanted to keep going as much as I could.”

Capan III rattled off four birdies over his first five holes and then capped off the front nine with an eagle three to shoot a 6-under 29.

By the time he made the turn, he knew his round had the potential to enter rare territory.

Seven consecutive birdies followed on holes 10 through 16, and suddenly, Capan III sat at 13-under par through 16 holes.

But he did not realize that this course played as a par-71. He thought it was a par-72.

“When I got to [13-under], I knew that, okay, there’s 59,” Capan III added.

Veritex Bank Championship

“But very seldom are you that far under par. I shot 59 before, so I thought I might as well break that. Then, I didn’t know it was par 71, but I was really just trying to birdie 17 and 18. Unfortunately, I didn’t get either one. I made an eight-foot slider on 18 to shoot 58. It was pretty cool.”

His tee shot on the par-5 18th found the fairway bunker, forcing him to lay up on the 524-yard par-5. He then found the green with his third shot and two-putted from 39 feet away, including that slider, for par.

“I still thought it was for 59,” Capan III added.

“When someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, you’ve got to take advantage.”

Alligator interrupts PGA Tour event with stroll across tee box

There was more alligator-related action from round 1 of the zurich classic, too., by eric mullin • published 5 mins ago • updated 47 seconds ago.

There was a course-invader during the opening round of the PGA Tour 's Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Thursday.

But it wasn't a fan who interrupted play.

As golfers were preparing to tee off on the 17th hole at TPC Louisiana, an alligator made its way across the tee box . And the creature certainly didn't appear to be in a hurry.
