How to Prepare for Your Next Branding Photoshoot

  • February 17, 2022

Before I launch into a helpful checklist, complete with key things you should consider before booking your first photoshoot for your travel business, I want to address this question:

Do you even need a photoshoot?

Short answer, no. Long-drawn out, soliloquy, still no. But, I do think it’s worth the consideration. Having a professional photoshoot takes your travel business brand to the next level. It conveys the message that you are a serious advisor and you run a legit business. And having quality photos will come in useful when building your website and when seeking media opportunities.

But by no means, is a photoshoot the first place you should invest your dollars. However, once you start earning, it’s worth the money.

If you are ready to take the plunge, here are nine ways to prepare for your time in front of the lens. And as a bonus, I’ve included some of the mistakes I made so you’ll be one step ahead.

Create a swipe file

If you don’t already have a swipe file, I highly recommend you start one. I keep a digital folder inside my Google Drive. If you aren’t the digital type, a plain ol’ manila folder does the job too. Anytime I come across a website design, a sales page, a landing page, anything that I think…🤔  hmmmm, I could see myself using that, I screenshot it and plop it in my folder.

how to prepare for a branding photoshoot

I started a folder just for planning my photoshoot and stole some poses and styling from other online female entrepreneurs I admire. I then shared that Google Drive with my photographer so she could get a feel for the look I was after.

If your photographer specializes in brand photography, they’ll probably already have some ideas. But even if they know you really well, I’m sure they would appreciate some guidance.

If you are a natural in front of the camera, you may instinctively know how to position yourself to look your best.  Or, maybe not. My photographer knew what she was doing yet was still willing to try anything I suggested. And I also trusted her even when she asked me to strike a pose that made me feel ridiculous.

Be sure to set up your shots in such a way to allow for text. I wished I had planned out my shoot better. Yes, Photoshop can fix a lot of things in post-production but you may not have access or experience with Photoshop, so getting this right first is key. Like this 👇

how to prepare for a branding photoshoot

Lay out your outfits the night before

If you are a natural stylist…picking out outfits won’t be a big deal for you, but if not, enlist the help of some good friends. And I’d pick out a few options keeping in mind…outfit changes take time away from the shoot. I opted for multiple shirts rather than full-on outfit changes.

Lay everything out the night before, including all accessories, shoes, necklaces, earrings. Be sure your clothes are pressed and ready to go. On the day of the photoshoot, you don’t want to be rummaging through your closet and fumbling with an iron.

Wear colours that complement your brand

Choose colours that will complement your brand. I actually had to go out and purchase a few things because I don’t typically wear white, too hard to keep clean, but I knew a solid white would be versatile for design.

And it’s also probably a good idea to keep to solid colours rather than go wild with a print that may not work on multiple backdrops. Again, it depends on your brand and how you want to present yourself.

Borrow some props

You’ll probably already own some travel props you can use that will represent your brand. Think about things like a globe, or books, or a suitcase. Choose things that will denote your expertise as a travel professional.

I made several trips to Homesense in the weeks leading up to my photoshoot to purchase a bunch of tchotchkes that I thought might work. I kept the price tags on and returned most of them immediately after.

how to prepare for a branding photoshoot

Choose a time with perfect lighting

Your photographer will suggest the best time of day for lighting. Even if you are thinking of doing indoor shots, natural lighting from windows can help. I prefer outdoor shoots so, I went for the magical golden hours, between 7 and 9 PM, at the height of the summer.

Pre-plan your locations

Brand photographers will probably already have some ideas of where to shoot especially if you pick a local photographer. Again, this is another good reason to have a swipe file. If there is a look you are after, you can start thinking of similar locations near you.

And if you are planning to use your own home, why not send advance images of your office and outdoor spaces to the photographer so she knows what she’s got to work with.

Get to know your photographer

I found Bobi in a local community Facebook group after having posted a request for recommendations. I received a ton of direct messages from interested parties. The first thing I did was review their websites to find a style that resonated with me. Then I set up interviews to see who I clicked with. Having a connection with your photographer definitely helps.

You might even try sourcing a photographer using Instagram by searching #(yourcity)brandphotographer.

Be sure to agree to the final details in advance

How many images will be included? How long will the photoshoot be? What’s plan B in case of inclement weather? How many locations? Be sure who owns the right to the photos. How many photos will be included in your final selection? How long will the images be kept? And what about the costs for touch-ups? Do they charge per hour, per session, per location?

Iron these out upfront to avoid any disappointment. I forgot to ask how long the images would be kept on file. By the time I made the decision to go back and order more, they were gone.

Open a bottle of vino and relax

And my final piece of advice, probably more for those who are not naturally posers, is to have a glass of whatever to relax you beforehand. Your first photoshoot is probably going to be nerve-racking no matter how much you prepare.

The good news is…in the world of digital photography, almost everything can be fixed post-production or reshot. There is never a need to lose a wink of sleep.

As a travel advisor, having a professional photoshoot done “in-destination” is a great idea. Don’t forget to check out local photographers either through a web search or again, Instagram. You’ll support the local economy and the world certainly doesn’t lack talent.

Sometimes, it’s a good idea to put away the selfie stick. 😉 and leave things to the professionals.

Live and Learn…

And the more photoshoots you do, the better you will look. The one thing I wished I’d done was to have taken more smiling full profile images. I feel most uncomfortable looking straight at the camera and smiling, and as a result, I got very few of those to choose from.

But that’s okay. There is always next time.

If you found this article useful, I’d love it if you shared it with a colleague or close friend. 📸 💕

Photoshoot Ideas & Photography Tips for Solo Travelers

We live in the age of the phrase, if there’s no picture, did it ever really happen? If you take a solo vacation, you may feel awkward asking others to take pictures of you or using a selfie stick/self-timer to capture moments. Solo travel no longer means you have to compromise on capturing amazing photos– you really can have it all as a solo traveler.

Below we’ll cover some photography tips for solo travelers, some solo photoshoot ideas, and how to book a local photographer at your destination to capture epic solo travel photos.

travel agent photoshoot

Photography Tips for Solo Travelers

Traveling solo can be such a liberating experience. You have more freedom to choose where and when you go and it can often be cheaper too. But how do you capture those memories in photo form like those traveling with other people? Even in the modern craze of the selfie, we can’t always record the true essence of actually being somewhere unless we sacrifice not being in the photo ourselves.

travel agent photoshoot

Get a Travel Tripod

Tripods are a must for any photographer. Ensuring your camera is steady makes for the perfect photo.

You might think that dragging along a tripod everywhere will be painful, especially if you are backpacking and are carrying your life on your back. However, tripods have come a long way since the beginning days of photography. There are many lightweight and foldable options out there that are perfect for your own photoshoot as a solo traveler. Our favorite ones are:

  • The Pocket Tripod – It fits inside your wallet!
  • The Joby Gorillapod – Best all-around travel tripod
  • Peak Design Travel Tripod – Great for professional travel photographers with DSLRs

Adding a remote (hopefully wireless) will then make your tripod your new travel bestie as you can set up the backdrop and get into the photo, and with one click on the remote, your perfect shot is taken.

Learn Your Camera’s Settings

There are some amazing features on your camera that I bet you don’t know about. Or you know about them but haven’t spent the time getting to know how to use them.

Before you set off on your solo travels or when you purchase a new camera, practice using the functions and settings before you go. There is nothing worse than being somewhere as spectacular as the Statue of Liberty and then needing to figure out how to set the self-timer. Practice with still and moving objects as well as during different times of the day so you can get to know the settings of your camera in different types of lighting.

A feature that is very useful for solo travelers is the ‘self-timer continuous’ feature. As it states, it is a self-timer, allowing the camera to be set ready for you to jump in the photo. And by adding the continuous burst feature, you can ..literally jump in the photo! A continuous burst tasks 5+ photos in quick succession – then all you need to do is pick the best image.

Or at least do everything in your power to avoid the tourist hot spots when it is crowded. As travelers, we have an ideal image of how we want our vacation photos to look. For most people, we want a physical reminder of being somewhere amazing.

Often those amazing places are THE places to go at your chosen destination, so it is best to plan and research before going. Find out the busiest times of that attraction and avoid that time! As a solo traveler, taking photos can be tricky anyway but if you don’t need to navigate crowds then your photoshoot will be just how you imagined it.

travel agent photoshoot

Hire a Local Photographer

Consider hiring a professional photographer in your destination. They will be able to bring all their own gear and can do all the hard work while you enjoy creating those moments. You are guaranteed the image you need as they will work with you to create the perfect photoshoot that will tell the story of your solo travel adventure.

travel agent photoshoot

Gain a Friend

By hiring a local photographer, no matter where in the world you are, you’ll essentially have a friend to venture around with for a bit! Your solo photographer will capture any fun, silly, candid, and extraordinary moments– plus, he or she can offer tips for the most picture-perfect memory-making! Use your photographer as a resource to get to know the city you’re visiting even better. Plus, they’ll have some excellent solo photoshoot ideas such as the best photo spots and the poses that work best. They may even have recommendations for local tour guides, pub crawls, etc.

Feel like a Star

Imagine browsing local markets in France, running on the beach in Spain, or simply walking the streets of Manhattan– and having a photographer with ninja-like skills there to capture every moment along the way! It’ll be like having your very own paparazzi– without the fear of being photographed doing something ridiculous, or scandalous even! Your solo photographer won’t impede your space or make you feel awkward– you won’t even have to worry about striking a pose. Just have fun and enjoy your me-time.

Epic Solo Traveler Photos

Hiring a solo photographer is no longer reserved for weddings, bar mitzvahs, or baby showers– now, more and more travelers are hiring photographers for solo photoshoot ideas and to capture moments that they would have otherwise been unable to. You’ll finally return home with epic vacation photos, instead of awkward selfies or poorly framed photos that were taken by a stranger.

travel agent photoshoot

Solo Photoshoot Ideas

There’s something about traveling alone that we love – it’s exciting, liberating, and a haven for self-exploration. With no one else to worry about or sync up your schedule with, you are truly free to explore wherever, whenever you’d like! Some may think a downfall to solo travel is that there is no one around to share memories and capture photos with– but that doesn’t have to be the case!

Get Creative

There is no rule that states your whole body or face need to be in your photos. You know what you look like so why not create a memory of you “doing” something rather than an awkward pose or smile.

Think of how you are seeing something through your eyes. As you lift that coffee or wine to your lips, what is the view? Capture that. Laying on a beach? Capture just your feet in the sand.

A great way to take these types of photos is by using a selfie stick. Selfie sticks are not just for mobile phones, with some cameras being able to also use a similar function. Solo travelers can then capture that shot of walking across a famous bridge from behind (think the iconic Brooklyn Bridge) or capture a wider view of a crowded area (think the steps in Times Square). Images of the back of your head can add a dimension to your photos that take you back to that exact moment even years later.

Make it an action shot

Traveling solo? Invest in a GoPro for those adventurous moments. Action shots can really capture emotion and tell a story that a posed photo can’t.

GoPro’s can also up your photo game by allowing you to take underwater photos. They are also a great alternative to a regular camera due to their shockproof features.

Consider taking stills from a video that you can capture with a GoPro too. By using an extender (similar to a selfie stick) you can wander jungles and walk through shallow waters and capture those solo travel moments.

Use reflective surfaces

Not everyone wants to approach a stranger to ask them to take a photo. (FYI – most other travelers LOVE helping solo travelers out). If you are one of those people, then think outside the box and use a reflective surface to add some wow to your photos and capture that moment.

Shop windows in the right light make for great assistants on your solo travels. At the right angle, you can get into the shot with a recognizable building or landmark like the famous Bull of Wall Street. The shot will then have a flair that other people may not have – an especially handy trick if you are planning to create a travel blog or Instagram.

Reflections from water can also be a fun and interesting way to record your memories as a solo traveler.

travel agent photoshoot

Hiring a Local Professional Photographer

Book a fun experience with a local professional photographer who knows all the best photo spots, when the best lighting will be, and how to beat the crowds to capture magical moments without tons of other tourists in the background. Not only will they take amazing solo travel photos, but will edit them to be beautiful photo souvenirs you’ll treasure for years to come.

Sometimes solo travel can be the best way to see the world… but it can be hard to capture your trip when traveling alone. Connecting with a local photographer for solo photoshoot ideas can be the solution to your problems! You get to meet a local who’ll help capture your travel memories and offer photography tips. You’ll also get some unique insight into the city you’re visiting that only a local could know.

In this blog post, I wanted to talk about my experience specifically at the Sandals Photo Center . When I was trying to research costs and information, I was unsuccessful in locating that. You can read about their photography & video services here , but there are no prices on their website. So I wanted to experience the Sandals Photo Center so I could come back and tell my clients (and all of you) about it. Each couple is entitled to a FREE 20-minute photo session at the Sandals Resort you’re staying at.

Setting Up the Appointment

I love having professional photos to capture the memories when I travel, so it’s no surprise I wanted to have professional photos done for Corey’s birthday / Valentine’s Day. We decided to have the photos taken while we were at the Sandals Montego Bay resort (even though we stayed at a neighboring Sandals resort). There are exchange privileges among the different Sandals resorts, if there are multiple resorts within the same location.

travel agent photoshoot

I couldn’t believe how easy it was to set up an appointmen t. We went into the Photo Center right onsite at Sandals Montego Bay the day before the shoot to schedule a time. It is located right next to the open-air lobby. You can’t miss it! On other Sandals properties, it’s also very centrally located.

There was no wait or anything crazy even though we went in February during peak season. We scheduled our shoot for 10:00 am the next morning. I figured it’d be best to get our photos done before noon when the wicked sun is blazing.

Note: Getting your photos taken at SUNSET may be more competitive. We saw TONS of couples getting their photos done around that time.

On the day of the photoshoot, we met our photographer (shout out to Curt!!) and set off on an adventure. Knowing full and where there would be multiple outfit changes throughout, our photographer was very patient. He knew the right locations like this beautiful garden area.

He also blew up balloons for Corey’s birthday! So that was a nice touch. He posed us in ways I thought I would hate but actually ended up loving. The staff there is so wonderful and really work with you. I wish I could’ve tipped him but the staff at Sandals Resorts are not able to accept tips. I remember thinking how cheesy some of the shots were going to be but then later ended up loving all of them. But the way my budget is set up… couldn’t get them all.

We then moved towards the beach and took photos there. Because duh that’s why you get these photos done. You want powdery white sand beaches in your backdrop along with crystal clear water.

Retrieving Photos

Our photoshoot ended around maybe 11:30 am and Curt told us the photos should be ready around 1:00 pm. What kind of a ninja…

The turn around times at the Sandals Photo Center are super quick. We show up later in the evening before dinner to pay for the photos. While the photoshoot itself was FREE , the cost of each photo as it stood a few weeks ago is $18 per photo . And of course you will fall in love with just about each photo they take (darn it!). So it adds up quick. We only purchased 11 photos and split the costs up between our two debit cards.

After you purchase your photos you’re given a few hard copies along with a picture frame as a keepsake. There were two frames to choose from: one that reads “Sandals” and the other that reads “Jamaica.” Then you’re given a receipt with a website and your specific 9 digit code. When you log in to the website, you’ll have 60 days to retrieve your photos before they expire . Overall it was very user friendly.

I do think it’s a fun thing for couples to do while their on the resort. I know we all bring our little camera phones but it’s nice to come back home and relive these moments.Hhighly recommend getting your photos done at a Sandals Resort when you’re a guest there. Even if you’re only able to purchase a few photos. We enjoyed ourselves even in the 90 degree heat! #worthit

We left Sandals Ochi Rios on Saturday but never got to look at our photos. Is there a way to access them and purchase online?

' src=

Hi Jennifer. Welcome back from Jamaica! The way I understood it is that you would need to purchase your photos before you check out, but I’m sure that they provide a small window of storing those photos before they are deleted. I recommend reaching out ot the Resort Sales Manager directly to see if they can point you in the right direction. Ruth Garnett – [email protected] . Best of luck and hope you can recover your images from the server!

Hi there, Jennifer, we you able to access your photos? I’m in the same boat. We didn’t have time to view them before we left.

' src=

Hi there, My husband and I would like to look at other photos we had from Sandals, Barbados. Is it possible to purchase them online?

Hi Casey! I believe they store photos for up to 2 weeks from your date of photoshoot. So check with the resort (you were likely given a file name/password) and they can send you the electronic link!

Hi we lost our download papers on a trip to Sandals Antigua. it was last year in august how can I get them online.

Hi DiGuilmi family! I believe they only store photos up to 2 weeks unfortunately. So I’m not sure they would still have them. But it never hurts to ask. Reach out to the resort directly and see if they still have them. Fingers crossed they do!
