this is the best guide there is: http://vwgolfr32.co.uk/ccs.pdf but it takes a while to make sense of it. I fitted it to my 2001 S3 easily enough, and the TDI's have the extra loom already so it should be even easier. PM me if you have any problems.  

Hi sobby, Thanks for the answer. I had a look on the guide, but my wiring ( org. Audi) do not look anything like the pic shown. - It has no loose wire. every end has a socket.. Had a "weekend mec." do the job, but it dosen´t work. Mayby a program error? We have programmed the engine with code 11463 and got a "g" in the engine code, but still not results. Any inputs? Regards Frederik

Audi A3 Cruise Control Retrofit Guide

When i first got my Audi A3 i really missed the cruise control system that my A6 used to have, such a simple but worthwhile feature.

Eager to get this back i decided to do a bit of “hunting around” to try get it back, i quickly came to the realisation it might be an Audi/Dealership thing to get done.

I called up Audi expecting them to quote £100-150 odd to get this done, i had to hand over loads of details (VIN, Reg, year etc) and after 3 phone calls the quoted price was a purely ridiculous £750!

What a waste of time and money, after some research i discovered the parts cost depending on new/second hand can be around £50

That’s exactly what happened with me i got the plastic and the stalk for £50 delivered and so began the DIY/Guide – with determination to beat the dealer.

Parts Needed:

• 2003 – 2010: 8P0 953 513 B or 8P0 953 513 D
• 2010 – 2013: 8P0 953 513 F
• 8P0 953 512 A
• Access to VCDS/VAG Com setup (to code it)
• Compatible Steering ECU

Tools Needed:

• M12 Spline Bolt
• Small Allen key
• 1-2 hours of time

Note: This process involves unplugging some important devices to the cars system (ECU, Steering wheel and airbag) if you are not comfortable with this then it may be best to get a professional to do this, and of course we are not responsible for damage done.

Step 1: Remove Airbag + Battery Disconnect 

For me this was one of the most scary parts of this retrofit, i mean no one wants an Airbag in the face!

The airbag is held in with two T25 bolts, you have to remove 2 plastic lugs to get at them:

This will more then likely require a combination of fiddling with the torx screw driver and turning the wheel to get too as space is limited between back of steering wheel and speedo.

Once these are undone the bolts dont come out so its best to keep undoing it just to make sure they are fully undone, he airbag will slightly come forward so you should be able to tell when its free.

Make sure the steering wheel is perfectly straight, take key out, pop bonnet and remove the negative terminal on battery.

Time for a cup of tea (or coffee) whilst we make sure the is no electrical charge left in the car (wait 30mins at least)

Ok now to remove the airbag, this should just pop forward from the steering wheel now – carefully pull forward but remember its still plugged in so dont just rip it out, lean it forward so you can see and access the back.

The wires might vary slightly depending on what steering wheel you have but in my case it was the main yellow connection into the slip ring as pictured:

The connector has an orange clip, pushing on this will release the main yellow connector and it should just easily pop off.

Note: if it doesn’t easily pop off dont force it, take time and check the orange clip is pushed in.

Once off put this carefully to one side, i placed it away from me in the passenger footwell with Audi logo facing up just incase it does for whatever reason trigger (very very unlikely without power to it) it doesn’t shoot up like a rocket and potentially hurt someone.

Step 2: Remove Steering Wheel + Picture Alignment

To remove the steering wheel this is held in place with a good sized centre bolt (M12 Spline)

This will undo and come out, with bolt out of the way its worth noting and taking a picture of the alignment so you can get it just right when you put it back.

In most cases the two marks on the steering wheel and steering rack will line up but a pictures always good to have:

Once done remove steering wheel and place out of the way.

Step 3: Remove Plastic Cowling/Surround

Firstly we have to undo the adjustment handle on the underside of the column, Its held in place with a total of 3 T25 Screws, as show in the picture below:

Once this is undone the cowling (upper part) should hinge up and will reveal the location of 2 T25 screws on the front.

Plastics should come away, can be a bit fiddly go careful not to pull wires or more importantly disturb the centre plastic slip ring.

Note: I have seen on another website a good tip for not disturbing slip ring position, place tape on it to stop it moving

Step 4: Remove Steering ECU

This is said to be one of the most fiddly and annoying parts of this process, but its fairly simple when you know where to look.

Firstly for information this is held in place by:

• 1 x T9 Screw at front (should be visible)
• 1 x Front plastic clip
• 1 X Rear plastic clip
• 2 x Rear electrical connectors

I started by removing the yellow connector at the back, this is spring loaded and will pull off.

Next i removed the front T9 screw, to allow the ecu to move when we undo the actual holding clips.

I then fiddled with the back clip this when you feel it will just push in, its situated to one side of where the black connector is.

When you unclip it the ECU will drop down at the back.

The front clip is a little more involved, this is released with a small long screw driver or Allen key down a chamber as pictured:

When you hit this the ECU should just drop down, i didn’t unplug the black connector the is enough room for you just to “drop” this down and work.

I have found a video of someone showing this on a golf MK5, looks to be same module – which shows both clips perfectly:

Step 5: Remove Slip Ring (carefully)

The slip ring is held in place by two plastic clips:

Once unclipped slip ring will carefully slide off

Step 6: Remove ESP Sensor

This is easy, situated at the bottom as pictured:

It will just slide forward and come out, put this to one side for now.

Step 7: Switch stalk for one with cruise

The stalk is held in place by a clip towards the left hand side at the back

When unclipped this will slide off

You will then be able to slide the new one in its place.

Step 8: Put it all back together!

Just slowly and carefully reverse the above steps

• ESP Sensor Back on
• ECU + Connectors + T9 Screw
• Plastic cowling back on (using the new one that fits the cruise stalk)
• Adjustment handle + Screws
• Steering wheel – Make sure the alignment is right (use markings + picture as reference)
• Airbag back in (make sure its connected + and screws back in)

Step 9: Code With VCDS

To code this in the is 2 changes needed the first is in the engine

[Select] [01 – Engine] [Login – 11] Enter 11463 to activate cruise control [Do It!]

The second coding change is

[Select] [16 – Steering Wheel] [Coding]

Change the coding as per:

00xxx?x: Cruise Control/Board Computer 0 = no Board Computer, no Cruise Control 1 = Board Computer, no Cruise Control 2 = no Board Computer, Cruise Control 4 = Board Computer, Cruise Control

Thats it, clear out any error codes you may have triggered and go test!

Its beer o clock time now.

Retrofit Cruise Control to Audi A3 8P

Hi This weekend I will try! to retrofit cruise control to the Audi. Has anybody done this before and can send me some tips? I will get some pics and a list of instructions. So far I have ordered the following parts: 8P0 953 513 B (9B9 Black) New switch with small cruise control 8P0 953 512 A Trim lower part for models with cruise control system The car has: 8P0 953 549 C: Electronic Module for steering column combination switch Well let you know how it goes?  

VAG - COM Hi After fitting cruise control today which went well, the only part is to re-code the relevant parts of the car. Does anybody know the correct numbers for the different boxes? Assuming you have DSG, no multifunction, DIS and rear wiper your coding will be 0011111. To enable cruise control you would need to change it to 0011141. It's the 6th digit that you need to change, all other digits should stay just as they are.

I did the coding as suggested; I found this on the Ross-Tech website as well: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/vwmkIV.html Activating Cruise Control on a new ECU (DBW): Factory fresh ECU's often come with cruise control de-activated. If this is the case, there will not be a letter "G" in the Component field of VAG-COM when connected to the Engine. [Select] [01 - Engine] [Login - 11] Enter 11463 to activate cruise control [Do It!] After doing this procedure, there should be a letter "G" in the Component field. Then change the 16 – Steering Wheel code – as listed above. I now have the green cruise control lamp on when I set the speed!!!! it works. Very easy!  

Excellent! Glad your install was easier than mine (I had to replace the SCSM, since the original factory fit one wouldn't accept the coding for cruise control). I remembered about the login needed on the engine ECU when I replied to your posting on http://www.tyresmoke.net .  

Anybody confirm that if I have Steering Wheel module 8P0 953 549 B that I need the C version to enable me to install cruise on my 2005 (UK) A3 8P 2.0TDi DSG. About the only extra that I would like that the previous owner didn't order. Thanks, Paul

Hello all!!!! I have some problem: I bought a multifunction steering wheel in 2006 for a3 8p, I like the module 8p0 953 549 and 1K0 ring 953,653. I have replaced the module 1k0953549 BP and ring 1k0953653. Es what it should do the walk? I installed the coding but in Vag password controls are backlit, but it does not work. Have you any idea? should I change it all? thank you all  

hi there i have just bought a a3 2007 tdi 170 sline and was looking to fit cruise control fitting stalk is no problem but coding in ?? does any one know the correct coding for the steering control unit and ecu step by step if poss i do have a vag 1552 would this work on my a3 ???  

How can I find out which steering control module do I have and if it supports fitting CC? My Audi dealer told me that they need to disassebmle somethnig to check it out. Audi A3 8P 2009 Thanks Goran

A3 8p Cruise Control Retrofit

Hey I have some problems retrofitting Cruise Control in my Audi A3 8p. I have installed the new stalk 8P0 953 513 D. I then coded first the steering wheel electronics: 1. 16 - Steering Wheel 2. 07 - Coding 3. Changed my coding from 0000012 to 0000042 Since i went from board computer without Cruise Control to now having Cruise Control Options 0 = no Board Computer, no Cruise Control 1 = Board Computer, no Cruise Control 2 = no Board Computer, Cruise Control 4 = Board Computer, Cruise Control I then went to code the engine control. My "Coding II" was greyed out, and after some research i found that i should use "Long Coding" for mine instead. cf. http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/2.0l_TFSI_(AXX/BGB/BPJ/BPY/BWA)#Coding So i went into the long coding helper, scrolled to bit 6, and checked off "Cruise Control installed" But my cruise control still doesn't work, and now i have a fault code on 16 - Steering wheel saying Incorrectly Coded Is it possible that i need to open 16 - Security Acces with a code in 01 - Engine, to acces "Coding II" and then code it as normal by using the password 11463. Hi and welcome. In the future, please don't run your scans trough a translator. Instead, please use the standard English version of VCDS , which will will happily coexist on your computer with the Danish translation you are currently using. Many Audis of that era required an extra wire to be run between the steering column module and the ECU when cruise control was being retrofit. I'm not certain this is the case in your car, but if it is, it would explain why the steering column module complains that it is incorrectly coded after you coded it for cruise. -Uwe-

Hi again. I have checked me main connector on the ECU , and i already had a grey/black wire in pin 13. Is my wire not already there then?  

I bet @NEtech knows more about this retrofit than I do, and since you are using the Danish version of VCDS , you are his customer as well as ours... -Uwe-

I don't have WD currently. Try to change zero values in wsc , importer, device no., like explained here before do coding. Then maybe try coding for 0000022 [16]  

When i coded it VCDS automatically made me change the WSC -values. But i’ll try the coding when I get home, thanks!  

When i originally changed to the cruise control stalk, VCDS made me change the WSC -values on the new stalk. They should therefore already be changed. My steering column module had a dealer number, but the other values, (importer no. and device no.) were zeros, and I therefore changed them to 123, but no results. I also tried changing the coding from 0000042 [16] to 0000022 [16], but with no results other than my switch for the Board Computer didn't work.

P.S. In regards to that GRA / CCS wire the diagram shows it at T20b/13 (black/white stripe) at J527 (Address 16) and T94/18 at J220 (Address 01). I did not see a connector in-between in the diagram but you may want to make sure that wire is present at both control modules on those terminals if the MVB results show CCS data in 16 but not in 01.  

I have just been out trying to look at the MVB , but my laptop ran out of power so I'll check again in a minute. But I could read values for ON/OFF, Deaccelerate, Accelerate and Cancel (Address 16, 004). When I went to check the electronic throttle (Address 01, 066) I could see it changing in the ON/OFF-position, but I didn't get to read the exact values before my laptop ran out of power. Although I couldn't see any changes other than the ON/OFF in this module (Address 01, 066)  

I have been out trying again. In the (Address 01,066) I can get It to show values for ON/OFF, Decelerate, Accelerate and Cancel. But i couldn't seem to get it to show any values from Resume or the SET-button. But the Decelerate and Accelerate only worked if i had moved it to resume, after having put it in OFF-pos.  

Could you post all data values from MWB 066 in engine. CCS ON. You can use [Add to Log] and copy and paste from log file.  

I have uploaded the MVB values under here. I couldn't get It to make changes to the values when pressing "SET"-button and pressing "Resume"-button. Also wasn't able to get it to react on "Decelerate", "Accelerate" and "Cancel", when i went straight from "OFF"-position to "ON"-position. It had to be moved into "Resume" (Where i didn't get any response), and then i could use "Decelerate", "Accelerate" and "Cancel". Also it starts and ends in "OFF"-position. There is a few "OFF" in the beginning, but i just had to figure out how to use the "Add to log"-function correctly. Brake and clutch positions for "Switch Positions I" are not "1" when you drive ?  

These values are while the engine is turned off, but ignition on. I can try while driving.
