Cruise Formal Night Explained: 10 Things to Know (What to Wear and More…)

Formal night on a cruise is a classic tradition, but for many passengers, it can also lead to lots of questions. Do I have to dress up? What can I wear? When are the formal nights?

Formal wear on a cruise ship

We’ve taken dozens of cruise and know that for those unfamiliar with formal night, it can feel a bit unnerving trying to figure out the ins and outs of dressing up. No one wants to head to dinner underdressed. At the same time, some people don’t want to dress up at all and prefer to know what other options they have.

Below, we’ve covered some of the most frequent questions about formal night on a cruise.

In This Article...

What Is a Cruise Formal Night?

Just as the name implies, formal night is the evening on the cruise when the dress code goes from the casual style that’s normal around the ship to more elegant. It’s a chance for passengers on the ship to put on their best and have an evening out that feels more special than just going to grab dinner in the dining room.

You’ll find people around the ship dressed up, having drinks, taking formal pictures, and enjoying dinner and a show. Think of it as a special event where many passengers have an elegant “date night” that’s more memorable than just another dinner on the ship.

Do I Have to Dress Up?

Absolutely not. Your cruise is your own. If you don’t want to dress up for the evening, then you certainly don’t have to do so. Many people choose to keep it casual. If you decide that shorts and a t-shirt are as formal as you want to get, you won’t be alone.

However, if you do decide to not dress up, it’s a good idea to dine outside of the main dining room or higher-end specialty restaurants. These are spots that request nicer dress during formal night.

Even if casual dress is allowed in the dining room during formal night, you might feel out of place with others wearing suits or evening gowns.

What Can I Wear to Formal Night? Do I Have to Wear a Tux or an Evening Gown?

Perhaps the biggest question around formal night on a cruise is what to wear. What’s acceptable is wide-ranging. No, you don’t have to go out and get a tuxedo or a formal evening gown unless you want to.

For instance, you can go all out and dress up in your best. And you will see some people around the cruise ship go this route. But you don’t have to wear a suit or tux to enjoy the evening.

Women can simply wear a cocktail dress or a nice blouse with pants. For men, it’s fine to wear a suit, or even a buttoned-down shirt and a pair of slacks if you don’t want to get too fancy. Nice jeans would also be ok, although we’d suggest something slightly more dressy.

That said, not everything goes. There are some clothing items to avoid if you plan to eat in the dining room on formal night. This includes shorts, tank-tops, t-shirts, and swimsuits, as well as flip-flops. If you’d wear it to the pool or the beach, you don’t want to wear it to formal night.

  • Ok to Wear for Formal Night (Women): Gowns, dresses, skirts, blouses with pants
  • Ok to Wear for Formal Night (Men): Tuxedoes, suits, button-down shirts, slacks, nice jeans
  • Avoid Wearing (Men and Women): Shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, flip-flops

Is The Dress Code Strictly Enforced?

Don’t worry, you aren’t likely to be denied entry to the dining room, even if you are dressed casually. It’s not like an exclusive nightclub that bars entry.

While the name might be “formal” or “elegant” night, you won’t be out of place as long as you dress nicer than a t-shirt and shorts. Remember, the cruise lines want you to enjoy yourself and not be worried about if you should be in a tuxedo.

For that reason, as long as you avoid wearing something very casual (e.g. flip flops, shorts, and a tank top), it’s likely to be no issue. Even so, we’d highly recommend dressing up somewhat if you plan on eating in a dining room or a nicer specialty restaurant. Not only will you feel more comfortable around others who are dressed up, but it also adds to the atmosphere of formal night for others.

Where Should I Eat If I Don’t Dress Up?

Formal dining room on a cruise ship

While the main dining room is the spot for formal eating during the evening, you won’t go hungry if you decide not to take part in dressing up. Every cruise ship offers a number of different places to eat, with many casual dining options for those who aren’t getting fancy for the evening.

For instance, instead of the main dining room you can head to the buffet or one of the 24-hour restaurants around the ship. The restaurant’s atmosphere will give you an idea of if it’s ok to eat there dressed casually or not. The fancy steakhouse? You want to go formal. The spot serving pizza? Shorts and a t-shirt are just fine.

Is Formal Night For Everywhere on the Ship?

While you’ll definitely see people dressed up all around the ship, the only place where you’ll find any sort of suggested or required dress code is in the dining room and/or specialty restaurants.

So if you are just hanging out around the ship — having a drink in a bar, playing in the casino, watching an evening show — then you are perfectly fine dressing down. You won’t be the only one. While many people participate in formal night, a considerable chunk of passengers don’t.

How Many Formal Nights Are There During the Cruise?

The number of formal nights varies based on the length of your cruise. The rule of thumb is that a week-long cruise will have two formal nights during the trip (i.e. Day 2 and Day 5). Shorter trips normally have one.

It may be that if you are on a very short cruise (e.g. three days), there might not even be one formal night. For instance, we’ve been on one short cruise with “Wear Your Best” (i.e. the nicest thing you packed) instead of formal night.

Does Everyone on the Ship Dress Up?

No. If you decide to not dress up, then you certainly won’t be out of place. Many people choose to dress casually and just eat somewhere else other than the main dining room or higher-end restaurants. Even so, formal nights are popular and when you walk around the ship in the evening on one of these nights, there is no mistaking that it’s dressier than normal.

How Will I Know When it Is Formal Night?

Notice of formal night

Nothing would stop you in your tracks like heading down to dinner in a pair of shorts and then realizing everyone else is dressed up! Fortunately, you’ll get plenty of notice when it is formal night.

The most obvious spot will be with your daily cruise planner delivered to your cabin each day or through the cruise line’s app. There will be some mention of the dinner attire. It may be referred to as “formal” or “cruise elegant” or some other name. They all mean the same thing: Time to get dressed up!

As well, there are almost always announcements from the cruise director throughout the day sharing what is going on during the day and evening. They will usually mention it when it is formal night, so keep an ear out for announcements.

In the worst case, even if you don’t see any notice at all, you will definitely not miss the fact that many people are dressed up when you head to dinner that evening. That should give you a little time to head back to the room and dress up if you want to join in.

Do I Need to Dress Up at Any Other Time Than Formal Night?

For the most part, the only time you’ll need to dress anything other than casual is if you participate in formal night. That said, there are some spots where some nicer clothes are a good idea even if that evening’s dress code is casual.

Specifically, if you plan to visit any of the higher-end specialty restaurants on the ship, such as the steakhouse, then there may be a dress code.

Even if there is not, dressing up to fit the style of the restaurant is smart. So while it’s ok to dress casually at a burger joint on the ship, you’ll want to dress a little nicer if you go to the formal Italian or seafood spot for dinner.

Bottom Line on Cruise Formal Nights

The formal nights on a cruise are a fun way to do things a little differently. If you’re not someone that gets dressed up often, don’t worry. The rules around what’s formal and what’s not are flexible. As long as you make some sort of effort to dress a little nice, you’ll be fine. And if you want to go all out, you won’t be alone!

If you’re someone who likes to keep things casual, then that’s no issue either. While we’d suggest not eating the main dining room or nicer specialty restaurants on that night, you can wear what you want around the ship.

I dressed up in an old maxi dress that was really oversized that I found from my daughter’s wedding 9 years ago. It was so flowing and pretty, so heck YEAH I wore it! I wore a nice outfit each night, like a skirt or dress. My embarkation outfit for the first night I modified by taking off the pants and putting on a skirt. I even kept the high boots on, which really worked! The last night I had a long ‘cover up’ dress that I gussied up with a sparkly throw and wedge high sandals.

Most cruises include at least one evening designated as “formal night” or “elegant night,” but what exactly is formal night on a cruise? Does it mean you have to dust off (and pack!) your tuxedo or evening gown?

We dive into everything you need to know about a cruise formal night including what you should wear, how many formal nights you should expect on your voyage, and whether you’re able to skip the fancy festivities altogether.

What is a cruise formal night?

Formal night on a cruise ship is exactly as it sounds: passengers dress up in more formal clothing and enjoy a fancier-than-usual dinner menu in the ship’s main dining rooms. Some cruise lines up the ante as far as décor is concerned, too, providing more elegant table settings to add to the experience.

cruise formal night

Guests often look forward to formal night due to the inclusion of lobster and other elevated dishes on the menu across different cruise lines, and many also love the chance to dress in some of their best clothing that otherwise wouldn’t often be worn. On some cruise lines, formal night is also the chance to have your photo taken with the captain of the ship.

What should I wear on formal night?

Each cruise line has its own definition of what formal night attire entails, so to give you an idea here’s what a few cruise lines say you should wear.

Of its “Evening Chic” nights (the line’s term for formal night), Celebrity says “Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jean, an elegant dress top or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.”

Carnival: “If you want to attend a ‘cruise elegant’ evening, bring a fancier, more formal outfit. Men can wear suits or dress slacks with a sport coat and dress shirt. For women, cocktail dresses, pantsuits or elegant skirts and blouses are appropriate. Some guests like to go all out with a tuxedo or ball gown.”

Royal Caribbean: “Think of our formal dress code as a night out in your best black-tie look — suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns are all acceptable options.”

Wonder of the Seas Inaugural Cruise Review

Here are some general guidelines you can use to get an idea of what to pack for formal night, no matter the cruise line:

Guidelines For Men

  • dress shirt, pants, and sport coat
  • Suit and tie

Avoid Wearing: Shorts, light-wash or ripped jeans, t-shirts, casual sneakers, sandals, baseball caps

Guidelines For Women

  • Cocktail dress
  • Evening gown
  • Elegant skirt and top
  • Pantsuit/dress pants and blazer
  • Elegant jumpsuit

Avoid Wearing: Shorts, jeans, flip-flops, sneakers, t-shirts, baseball caps

How will I know when it’s formal night?

If your cruise line has an app, it should indicate that it’s formal night on the daily activities schedule and possibly also on the main dining room menus section. If you get a paper daily schedule, it will include formal night information.

Chances are good that your cruise director will also make an announcement (or several) throughout the day reminding everyone on the ship that they should dress to impress when heading to dinner in the main dining room that night.

Can you skip formal night on a cruise?

You absolutely can skip formal night if you so desire during your cruise. After all, it’s your vacation! If you want to dress in a t-shirt and shorts for all of your meals each day, the buffet is available for dinner on most cruise lines, and there may be some other quick-casual venues to check out as well. Room service is also an option.

If you’re worried because you don’t own any traditional “formal night” attire and don’t want to purchase new clothes just for your cruise, don’t fret. Even though the guidelines suggest that guests dress more formally on formal night — and some passengers really do go all-out — chances are good that many pieces of clothing that you’d normally wear to dinner will be allowed on formal night as well.

Though some guests will dress up in tuxedos and evening gowns, this is not the standard and you certainly don’t have to be that fancy.

Which cruise lines have formal nights?

The former definition of “formal night” doesn’t apply to most cruise lines nowadays, as many brands have relaxed their dress code rules even for the most elegant evenings of a cruise. Now, you’ll see many different terms for a cruise line’s more formal nights, including Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Norwegian’s Night Out,” Disney Cruise Line ’s “Dress Up Night,” and Celebrity Cruises’ “Evening Chic.”

However, the premise is essentially the same: these are the more formal nights of a cruise where guests should expect to step it up when it comes to their attire in the main dining rooms.

Holland America Line Rotterdam Restaurant Menus and Dining Guide

So, do all cruises have a formal night? Most have some form of a more elegant evening, but not all. In addition to the three cruise lines mentioned above, other brands that have formal night(s) include Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean , Carnival with its “Elegant Nights,” Holland America’s “Gala Nights,” MSC Cruises’ “Elegant Nights,” Cunard’s “Gala Evenings,” and P&O Cruises with its “Celebration Nights” or “Black Tie Nights.”

Luxury cruise brands Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises have formal optional evenings, meaning the ship does designate certain evenings as “formal night” but guests who do not wish to participate are perfectly fine if they choose not to.

Cruise lines that pointedly don’t offer any formal nights during their sailings include Oceania Cruises, Viking, and Virgin Voyages.

How many formal nights are on a cruise?

The number of formal nights on a given cruise will depend on the length of the cruise and the cruise line you’re sailing. With that being said, here’s a general guideline of what you can expect (but check your specific cruise line for the exact answer).

A five-night cruise or shorter will likely have one formal night. How many formal nights are on a seven-day cruise? Expect two on a six to eight-day voyage, and two or three on a voyage that’s nine to 13 days long. If you’re on a two-week cruise or longer, plan for at least three to four formal nights or more.

Princess Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska Cruise Review

If you’re wondering what night formal night is on a cruise, that will also vary depending on your cruise line and itinerary. Many cruise lines have formal night on night two. If you’re taking a seven-night cruise, the second formal night might be the second-to-last evening of the sailing.

Multiple factors such as which days are sea days vs. port days come into play when cruise lines determine formal nights on a cruise, so even if you take a similar voyage on the same cruise line the exact days for formal night may change.

Do I have to dress up in other venues on formal night?

The attire guidelines for formal night generally only apply to dinner in the ship’s main dining rooms or main “restaurants.” However, it’s important to keep in mind that other venues may have their own dress codes that you should adhere to, especially the sit-down specialty restaurants. Some will be more casual, but others may require guests to keep to a more elegant dress code.

As we mentioned above, if you don’t want to change out of your shorts and t-shirt on formal night (or any other night of the cruise), the buffet is a great dinnertime option.

How should I dress in the main dining room on other evenings?

On non-formal nights, dinner in the main dining room should be what most people consider “smart casual.” For men, this means things like nice jeans, slacks, and dress shorts along with button up or polo shirts. Women can wear things like casual dresses and skirts; dress pants, shorts, and shirts; nicer jumpsuits or rompers; sundresses; and nice jeans.

You should avoid wearing beach sandals, gym clothes, cut-off jeans, casual shorts and t-shirts, and bathing suits in the main restaurants.

What to Wear on a Cruise – The Ultimate Guide

Planning a cruise is so exciting! You might be wondering what to pack and what to wear on a cruise, during the day, evening and even on formal nights.

In this post, we’ll go over the basics of cruise line dress codes, as well as ideas for cruise wear for sea days, shore excursions and dinners on a cruise ship. I’ve also included cruise packing checklists to help you plan your cruise outfits.

What to Wear on a Cruise Vacation

What to Wear on a Cruise – Cruise Line Dress Codes (2021 & Beyond)

You may imagine, or even remember, the days of dressing to the nines on a cruise. The reality is, as times have changed, so have the cruise line dress codes and expectations.

My first cruise was on the Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas. Can you guess what we wore on formal night ?

My husband wore a black tuxedo and I wore a floor champagne evening gown with gorgeous beading at the top.

True story – My brother got married just a month before, and these were our bride’s maid and groomsmen outfits. I was so thankful to be able to have a place to wear them again!

Yet, we weren’t out of place and certainly at that time, most men were either in a dark suit or tuxedo. Most women wore long gowns or cocktail dresses on formal nights on a cruise.

While you definitely can still wear an evening gown and tuxedo, most popular cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes over the last few years. You can still expect to dress up on a cruise , but there are more opportunities to dress less formally if you prefer this as well.

What to Wear on a Cruise Yes, dress Codes Are Changing

Cruise Line Dress Codes – What to Expect

Each cruise line has it’s own dress code, however most have a version of casual , smart casual, and formal nights . The terminology that cruise lines are using reflect subtle changes to the dress code.

A casual dress code means includes casual pants or nice jeans for men (no holes), along with a nice shirt or polo. For ladies, capri pants, nice jeans and a cute top, or a sundress are all great. Most of the time, first and last evenings of your cruise, will be a casual dress suggestion.

Cruise tip: Most cruise lines don’t allow shorts in the dining room, so men, make sure you pack at least a pair or two of pants.

Smart Casual

Casual Cruise Wear evening

The smart casual dress code may also be called resort casual. A good guideline is to dress as you would at a nice restaurant at home. For men, this can include dress pants or khakis and a nice polo, short or long sleeve buttoned shirt. For ladies, a casual dress or pants with a pretty top is perfect.

Cruise tip:   The ship’s air conditioning may be quite cool in the dining room. Bring a light shawl, scarf or cardigan to cover your shoulders.

Formal Night

Dressing up for formal night  remains a tradition on a cruise vacation. These days, the formal night dress code may be called a gala evening , evening chic or dress your best , but it is a night where people tend to put on their best cruise attire . You’ll usually have 2 formal nights during a 7 day cruise.

How formal is formal night?

How formal is formal night on a cruise? This does depend on the cruise line. Tuxedos and dark suits are always appropriate. However, in most cases men can feel comfortable wearing a suit or dress pants and a dress shirt. For ladies, an evening gown, cocktail dress, pant suit or “little black dress” are great choices.

Keep in mind, that if you’re not feeling like dressing up, you can always eat in more casual clothes in the buffet and most casual restaurants on the ship.

What to Wear on a Cruise During the Day

What to wear boarding a cruise ship.

What to Wear on a Cruise Vacation Boarding

When boarding your cruise ship, it’s a good idea to wear comfortable clothing and shoes . Cruise boarding procedures can take an hour or more.

Make sure to dress for the weather and wear warmer clothing if you’re going on a cool weather cruise. You may want to explore the cruise ship soon after you board .

On a Caribbean or other warm weather cruise, dress lightly and casually for the first day of your cruise. A light sundress or cute shorts and a top are perfect outfits for the first day of your cruise vacation. Men can wear a tshirt or polo style shirt and shorts.

If you’re cruising with kids , you can have them put a bathing suit on under their clothing. This way they can hit the pool and water slides as soon as you finish lunch on embarkation day .

It’s a good idea to bring an embarkation day bag. Here’s a list of 23 essential items to pack in your cruise carry on that will be helpful.

Cruise tip: Don’t forget to take an embarkation day photo. It will be a great memory of your amazing cruise vacation !

Cruise Day Wear for Sea Days

Cruise ship outfit

Most cruise lines are quite casual during the day. In our experience, family oriented cruise lines are understandably much more “casual” than “higher-end” cruise lines. Cruise casual, resort wear or country club casual are all terms used by the cruise lines as a recommendation.

Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, sundresses are all appropriate day wear for sea days . If you’re by the pool, it’s important to know that bathing suits are not permitted in the buffet or inside the cruise ship, so make sure to pack a cover up.

What to Wear on Shore Excursions

Beach and water activities.

Deciding what to wear on a cruise port day, will depend on your plans and excursions. If you’re going to the beach , you can wear a bathing suit under a light sundress or cover up. Bring some water shoes or flip flops too.

You may want to pack a change of clothing in your beach bag , along with your other beach day essentials .

Tours and Sightseeing

If you’re going on a tour or sightseeing shore excursion, there will likely be a lot of walking involved. Dress comfortably for the weather and make sure to wear comfortable shoes . A casual summer dress or shorts and a t-shirt is great.

Cruise tip: Keep in mind that if you are visiting religious buildings, such as a church or synagogue, it’s often suggested to cover your shoulders. I usually throw a very light cardigan or scarf in my handbag for these occasions.

What to Wear on a Cruise Evening

Most evenings on a cruise will be casual, smart casual or resort casual dress code. Many cruise lines now allow wearing nice jeans to the main dining room on a cruise, a change from the past.

A casual dress for ladies, or a nice pair of pants and a stylish top is perfect. A good suggestion for men is a polo style shirt and pants or a pair of dark jeans.

Many first time cruisers are concerned about what to wear on formal nights on a cruise . It’s understandable, as this is quite different from a typical land vacation.

Generally, formal nights, sometimes called gala evenings or chic evenings , call for a tuxedo, suit or dress pants and a sports jacket for men. However, in our experience in recent years, this has relaxed quite a bit and tuxedos in particular are far less common. Suits and dress pants, with or without a jacket and tie, have become the norm.

For ladies, dressing in an evening gown, cocktail dress, or fancy outfit is perfect. I like to think of it as “wedding guest” attire.

Something to remember is to dress in what you enjoy. If you love the glamour of a long gown and tuxedo, go for it! If you prefer a little black dress, that works well too (plus you can wear it for years!)

Cruise tip: Check your cruise line dress code and judge accordingly, however you can also check your cruise line roll call or Facebook group to get a better idea of how people are really dressing on a cruise. In some cases, in practice, things are more or less in keeping with the dress code.

Cruise Line Dress Code Exceptions to Note

There are a couple of exceptions out of the mainstream cruise lines, that fall on either end of the cruise dress code spectrum.

Norwegian Cruise Line: NCL has a Freestyle concept and therefore does not impose a dress code in it’s dining rooms (however rules of decorum* are in place). You can feel comfortable either dressing up or dressing down. Think of it as “You do you” .

Cunard: On the other end of the pendulum is Cunard, which prides itself on tradition and a more formal dining experience. Therefore, jackets are required nightly by men and it is quite common to see tuxes and gowns on Formal nights. For more information on what to expect on a Cunard Cruise, you may enjoy this post (Queen Mary 2 Cunard Cruise) that details it.

If you’re going on a family cruise , you might be wondering how dress codes apply to children. Generally, dress codes are quite relaxed for kids. Most cruise lines are fine with children wearing nice shorts in the dining room and restaurants for evening dinners.

That being said, it’s not uncommon for families with children to get dressed up on formal nights. It does make a great time to take family photos and have memories that will last a lifetime.

Teenagers can dress casually on a cruise most of the time, but should follow dress codes in the main dining room.

Cruise Outfit Tips

What to Wear on a Cruise During the Day

If you’re trying to pack light for a cruise , or even carry on only, here are a few tips:

  • Rather than bringing several dresses, you can repurpose the same one or two by changing accessories from one evening to the other.
  • Scarves, belts and jewelry can make an outfit feel new again. The reality is, no one cares or even notices if you wear the same outfit more than once.
  • You can also bring one pair of white pants or dark jeans, and bring a couple stylish tops to go with them.
  • A useful tip when planning your cruise outfits of the day is to wear your tighter dresses early on and save the looser styles for the last few days. It might sound like I’m joking, but I’m not 😉
  • I personally love shoes and have to restrain myself from bringing too many. However, you can do with 3-4 pairs of shoes on a cruise and be just fine.

Great advice. I’m cruising to Aruba on Friday, so I’m right in the midst of packing our suitcases right now. The formal nights completely annoy me. I feel like it’s just an income opportunity for the cruise line. I do like to dress up, but trying to fit everything into one big suitcase and a carry-on is tough. I am bringing those vacuum bags to try and squeeze in everything for our ship days, our excursions, and our dress-up dinners. It’s definitely going to take some squeezing, but I am kind of glad they’ve toned down the formal nights. I’m just bringing a maxi-skirt with a nice top and we’ll probably opt-out of the second one.

I’m so excited for you! Love Aruba! You’re right about the packing. I’m really trying to bring less these days (but I’m an over packer).I also wear items on “formal nights” that are dressy but comfortable, and ideally pack well.

Have a great cruise!

That’s a good idea to bring some more formal clothes. I would think that would be nice to have if you are on a fancier trip. I’ll have to make sure to pack a suit and that my wife packs a nice dress if we go on a cruise.

If you enjoy dressing up a couple of nights, you’ll adore formal or chic nights on a cruise. It definitely feels elegant.

Do check the cruise line dress code before you book, just to make sure that you choose a cruise ship where you’ll have this experience.

I’m a little bit like you. I love that it’s just a little less formal than years ago, but dressing up makes the evenings special. Great idea to pack with vacuum packed bags!

I have also found that gowns are downright odd on Princess formal nights now. There are always a few of us that wear them, but to-the-floor is gawked at. Not that I mind. And, Club Class Dining people seem to dress up more than others. On our Feb 2020 Hawaii cruise there were several white tie dinner jackets. On the opposite end, if you DON’T dress on formal nights, you are gawked at and should stay out of the main dining rooms.

Thanks for sharing your experience and what things have really been like onboard. When we’ve done holiday sailings we have found people dressed a little more (more suits and even tuxes) and other sailings less. Interesting about Club Class though.

Thanks again for your comments,

I dont see the tuxedo. You will have to point it out to me?

Each cruise has it’s own dress code, and tuxedos are definitely welcome. Some cruise lines are quite traditional and a tuxedo will be worn by many men (ie. Cunard). Other cruise lines, despite listing tuxedos among their dress suggestions, tend to have less passengers who are actually wearing them. What cruise line do you usually use?

So glad I found your YouTube channel, then website. Although I’ve been on a number of cruises (Disney, Carnival & RC), I regularly get great tips and ideas from you. Our next cruise is on RC NEXT week, February 27, 10 day western Caribbean. Can. Not. Wait!! Thus will be the third family reunion style cruise we have done with my wife’s family – this time sans kids – who are all now 18+. With this in mind, we chose Radiance of the Seas for the simple pleasure of cruising. Peace!

Very exciting!! Enjoy your cruise!

HI MY FIRST TIME GOING ON A CRUISE I HAVE READ A LOT OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS I WILL NOT BE GOING UNTIL 2024 SO I HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO GET READY.. ONE THING I FEEL WOULD BE I GOOD IDEA …WHEN YOU GET THE FOLDABLE HAMPER SET IT UP AND START PUTTING YOU LIST OF TO GET ITEMS IN SIDE,, YOU WILL HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM ..I HAVE FOUND THIS OUT THANK YOU

Happy planning!

Thank you so much! I’ve been stressing about what type of clothes to pack for our first cruise as a family (it’s a surprise 40th for my husband). Thanks to your post, I feel much more relieved and have a better idea of what we need. Again, THANK YOU!

So exciting! Enjoy!

What to Wear on Formal Night on a Cruise

Have you booked a cruise that has a formal night or two? Formal night on a cruise can be a highlight of your vacation! But if you don’t know what to wear on formal night, no worries—here’s everything you need to know.

cruise formal dinner attire

Read on to find out all about cruise formal night—from how to find out how many nights will be formal, what the formal night dress codes are for the major cruise lines, and what to do if the idea of dressing up on a cruise just isn’t your thing.

I’ve even put together some cruise formal night outfit ideas for men, women, and kids to inspire you!

Be sure to read my cruise formal night FAQ at the end for quick answers to the most frequently asked questions about formal night on a cruise.

What is formal night on a cruise?

Formal night on a cruise ship is the evening when passengers don dressy clothing for dinner, photos, and special activities. The main dining rooms usually will serve an elevated menu, with fancier options like filet mignon, prime rib, or lobster tail.

Some cruise lines have the Captain’s welcome party the evening of the first formal night, with the opportunity to meet the captain and mingle with the other guests.

cruise formal dinner attire

Your cruise line might use an alternate name for formal night, like “Evening Chic”, “Gala Evening”, or “Cruise Elegant”, but it’s essentially the same thing—a night when most passengers dress in their finest clothing for dinner and evening festivities.

Why do cruise lines have formal nights?

During the golden age of ocean liners, guests staying in first class cabins were required to wear formal attire after 6 PM in all public areas of the ship. In the early decades of modern cruise travel, women wore evening gowns and men donned white tie in the evenings.

In the 1960s, when standards of dress became less formal in general, cruise lines began to alter their dress codes to appeal to a more modern aesthetic—as well as to the less well-heeled guests who were now able to afford a cruise vacation.

Today, many passengers enjoy having the opportunity to dress up once or twice during a cruise. In an increasingly casual world, this tradition is unique to the cruise industry!

Do all cruise lines have formal night?

If you really don’t like dressing up, you might want to choose one of the cruise lines that doesn’t have formal nights. These cruise lines don’t have a specific formal night with dressy attire required in the main dining rooms:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Virgin Voyages
  • Oceania Cruises
  • Paul Gauguin Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas

However, most of these cruise lines do have “formal optional” evenings, when many passengers do dress up in the evening—but it’s not required.

What should you wear for formal night on a cruise?

When people ask me what to wear for formal night on a cruise, I usually advise them to dress like they would for an elegant evening wedding—a dark suit and tie for men, and a cocktail dress or dressy evening separates for women.

You’ll often see people dressed to both ends of the “formal” spectrum on many ships—some wear tuxedos and full-length gowns, and others will wear chinos and a dress shirt or a more casual dress.

On more traditional cruise lines like Holland America or Cunard, you’ll notice the general level of dressiness to be a bit higher. But as long as you’re within your cruise line’s dress code, feel free to be as dressy or as casual as you prefer.

Where to find the formal night dress code for your cruise line

The idea of “formal night” may conjure up different images to different people, so the cruise lines have come up with guidelines to help cruisers understand the dress code expectations before they pack for vacation.

Here are links to the formal night dress codes for many of the major cruise lines:

  • Carnival Cruise Line – look for “Cruise Elegant”
  • Celebrity Cruises – look for “Evening Chic”
  • Costa Cruises – look for “Formal”
  • Cunard Line – look for “Gala Evening”
  • Disney Cruise Line – look for “formal” and “semi-formal”
  • Holland America Line – look for “Formal”
  • MSC Cruises – click on “Gala Evenings”
  • Princess Cruises – click on Clothing Recommendations and look for “Formal”
  • Royal Caribbean – look for “Formal nights”

Where is formal night attire required on the ship?

If you’re opting out of formal night attire, you don’t need to stay in your stateroom all night! Formal night dress code is generally only required in the main dining room during dinner. (Some cruise lines also require formal attire in specialty restaurants on formal nights).

The buffet’s dress code will always be more casual, and of course no one expects you to lounge on the Lido deck in your suit or cocktail dress!

However, in the central area of the ship, especially after 5 or 6 PM, you’ll see most people dressed up for pre-dinner photos or cocktails. If I’m skipping formal night (or I’m having a late dinner and haven’t changed yet), I tend to avoid the atrium or the busiest part of the ship. You can feel a bit out of place in a t-shirt and shorts when everyone else has changed into their nighttime best!

Renting formal wear for your cruise

If you’d prefer to rent formal wear for your cruise, some cruise lines do offer tuxedo rentals. You’ll usually need to book this through the cruise line at least a couple of weeks before you sail.

Links and phone numbers for cruise line tux rentals:

  • Carnival: Call the Fun Shops at 1-800-522-7648
  • Cunard (tuxedo rental on board, no need to pre-order. Type “tuxedo” in FAQ search bar to see pricing)

Some cruise lines, including Disney and HAL, traditionally partnered with a company called Cruiseline Formalwear. Unfortunately, this company closed permanently during the pandemic. Instead, many cruisers have been renting tuxedos from local formal wear shops and carrying them on board.

For cocktail dress or gown rentals, you can check sites like Rent the Runway or Armoire (they’re especially great for maternity formal wear rentals). You’ll be able to rent a formal dress for far less than buying, and they take care of the cleaning for you.

How many formal nights will there be on my cruise?

When you’re deciding what to wear for formal night on a cruise, it’s a good idea to know how many formal nights your sailing will have.

In general, cruise lines that have formal nights will have two each week on a seven-day cruise. On short cruises (less than five days), there often isn’t a formal night.

Check with the cruise line or your travel agent to see how many formal nights are planned for your particular voyage.

Having photos taken on formal night

Once you’re all dressed up for the evening, why not plan to have some formal portraits taken to commemorate your cruise?

On most mainstream cruise lines, the roving photographers are ready to snap your pic in locations around the ship. But during formal night evenings, the photo team is out in full force!

They’ll often set up in the atrium or main public area with professional lighting and backdrops to capture your family or group in your formal night best.

Unlike a photoshoot on land, you won’t need to pay to have your pictures taken (although some cruise lines do have a portrait studio where you can book a photo session for a fee). You’ll only pay for the photos that you like, and prices are reasonable for formal shots.

A single 8″x10″ will run you about $25, and you’ll be able to purchase a discounted photo package if you want several prints to take home.

How to keep your cruise formal wear from wrinkling

Many cruisers worry about their dressy clothes for formal night wrinkling from being stuffed in a suitcase while traveling to the cruise port. You do have some options that will keep your formal wear looking good when you’re ready for that special night!

Although you can’t pack your own clothes iron or steamer (they’re a fire hazard on ships), some cruise lines do have passenger laundry rooms with an iron you can use to touch up your outfits.

But if your formal wear is too delicate for an iron, I have a few tricks you can use to get the wrinkles out:

  • Use wrinkle release spray and hang to dry
  • Use a home dry clean kit in the laundry room dryer
  • Hang your outfits in the bathroom with a hot shower running for a few minutes

Can you skip formal night on a cruise?

If dressing up just isn’t your thing, you can absolutely skip formal night on a cruise! The main dining room will have a formal dress code, but you can always have dinner at the buffet or order room service.

Many cruise lines have a “smart casual” dress code in their specialty restaurants, making them a popular choice on formal nights for those who want to avoid dressing up. But double-check dress codes—some cruise lines (Carnival for example) have the same dress code in their specialty restaurants as in the MDR on formal nights.

Cruise formal night FAQ

Do you have to dress up for formal night on a cruise?

As long as you don’t have dinner in the main dining room or a specialty restaurant with a formal night dress code, you don’t need to dress up for formal night. Instead, you can eat at the buffet, a quick-service restaurant, or order room service.

Do men have to wear a jacket and tie for cruise formal night?

Some cruise lines do require a jacket and tie to enter the main dining room on formal night. Check your cruise line’s  formal night dress code  for details.

Do women have to wear a dress for cruise formal night?

Cruise lines that have formal nights don’t specify that women need to wear a dress on those evenings. Dressy evening separates, like an elegant top paired with a matching skirt or trousers are fine for formal night.

Do kids need to dress up for formal night on a cruise?

If your cruise line has formal nights, kids who are eating in the main dining room with their parents will need to adhere to the formal night dress code.

Which cruise lines don’t have formal nights?

Several cruise lines don’t have formal nights, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Azamara, Oceania Cruises, Paul Gauguin Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas. However, there may be an optional dress-up night on your sailing.

Can you buy or rent formal wear on the cruise ship?

Many cruise lines offer tuxedo rentals, but you should reserve your tux at least several weeks before you sail.

I’d love to hear your opinions about what to wear for formal night on a cruise! Do you go all out, do the minimum, or skip it altogether? Let me know in the comments below!

I was wondering if it would be inappropriate to wear a simple wedding dress during formal night. My fiancé and I are eloping but the cruise is our honeymoon and much of his family will be there! I thought it might be fun! Nothing too poofy, just a lace sheath dress. TIA!

Hi Darby, I think a simple white lace sheath would be perfect for formal night on most cruise lines! As long as it doesn't actually look like a wedding dress, you'll be fine. Congrats on your upcoming wedding!

Hi Alex, lots of new cruisers don't know about formal night on their first cruise! Thankfully it's optional - you just need to eat dinner on those nights in a casual-friendly environment. But hopefully lots of first-time cruisers read this post so they know how to join in on the fun! :D

Dressing Right for Cruise Formal Nights: From Casual to Chic

by Judith Eve | Mar 4, 2024 | Cruise Planning & Cruiser Lifestyle

cruise formal dinner attire

Deciding what to wear on cruise formal nights can be as thrilling as it is daunting. It's that special evening where the ship's atmosphere turns a notch fancier, and everyone gets a chance to strut their best outfits. But with so many options, how does one choose the perfect ensemble?

Fear not! Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sea traveler, there's a way to navigate through the sea of formal wear without feeling lost. From elegant gowns to sharp tuxedos, understanding the unwritten rules of cruise attire will ensure you're decked out appropriately, blending in with the glamorous vibe of the night.

Understanding Cruise Formal Night Expectations

Cruise formal nights are a time-honored tradition, transforming the ship into a parade of elegance and style. For newcomers, understanding what to wear can feel like navigating uncharted waters. However, cruise lines often provide guests with guidelines that demystify dress codes, making it easier for everyone to blend in seamlessly with the sophisticated atmosphere.

At the core of it, formal nights on a cruise ship are not about strict rules but celebrating special occasions in style. Women typically shine in cocktail dresses, evening gowns, or sophisticated pant suits, while men don refined options like tuxedos, suits, or smart blazers with trousers. The key is to aim for attire that's a notch above the usual day wear, aligning with the ship's transformed ambiance.

Dress Code Variability

It's vital to note that dress codes can vary significantly between different cruise lines and even among ships within the same fleet. Luxury cruises might lean towards a more traditional definition of formal wear, expecting tuxedos and gowns as standard attire. In contrast, mainstream cruises could offer a more relaxed interpretation, where a nice dress or a shirt and trousers would suffice.

Understanding these nuances ensures that passengers can prepare appropriately without the fear of feeling underdressed or out of place. Pre-cruise communication from the cruise line, such as emails and brochures, often highlights these expectations, making it easier for guests to pack the perfect outfits.

Choosing the right attire for cruise formal nights adds an extra layer of excitement to the anticipation of the trip. With a clear grasp of what's expected, cruisers can focus on enjoying the elegant evenings, creating memorable moments without the worry of fashion faux pas.

Women's Attire Options for Cruise Formal Nights

cruise formal dinner attire

When it comes to cruise formal nights, women have a plethora of attire options to choose from. The essence of dressing up for these occasions is about blending elegance with comfort, ensuring that the attire not only looks sophisticated but also feels great to wear throughout the evening's events.

Cocktail Dresses and Evening Gowns

For most women, cocktail dresses and evening gowns are the go-to choices. Cocktail dresses are perfect for those who prefer something a little less formal but still want to adhere to the night's elegant theme. Typically, these dresses are knee-length or midi, offering a balance between formal and semi-formal.

On the other hand, evening gowns are ideal for making a statement. With longer hemlines that sweep the floor, these dresses come in various styles—from A-line to mermaid shapes—allowing for personal expression. The flexibility in choosing fabrics, such as silk or chiffon, adds an extra layer of sophistication.

Pantsuits and Jumpsuits

For those seeking an alternative to dresses, pantsuits and jumpsuits offer a chic and modern option. These pieces provide both style and comfort, making them a popular choice among women who prefer not to wear dresses. Tailored pantsuits in luxurious fabrics can elevate the look to fit the formal night's ambiance, while jumpsuits provide a unique silhouette that stands out in a sea of gowns.

Accessorizing

No outfit is complete without the right accessories. Statement jewelry , from pearl necklaces to diamond earrings, can accentuate the overall look, while elegant clutches serve as both a fashion statement and a practical item for carrying essentials. Choosing the right heels that offer comfort and style is crucial, as they can enhance the outfit's elegance while ensuring that the night can be enjoyed to the fullest.

By exploring these options, women can find the perfect attire that not only meets the cruise line's formal night expectations but also expresses their personal style. With the right outfit, they're set to enjoy an evening of sophistication and celebration on the high seas.

Men's Attire Options for Cruise Formal Nights

cruise formal dinner attire

When it comes to men's attire for cruise formal nights, the range of options allows for both traditional elegance and a touch of personal style. A key consideration is the cruising line's specific dress code, which can vary from relatively relaxed to strictly formal.

Tuxedos and Suits are the cornerstones of men's formalwear on these occasions. Opting for a classic black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt and a bow tie can never go wrong and exudes a timeless charm. Alternatively, a well-fitted dark suit paired with a smart dress shirt and a conservative tie offers a slightly less formal but equally respectable choice.

For those looking to inject a bit of their personality into their formal night ensemble, consider exploring:

  • Vest and Tie Combinations : Experimenting with different colors and patterns can add an individual touch while maintaining a polished look.
  • Shoes : While black dress shoes are a safe bet, switching to patent leather or polished loafers can elevate the overall aesthetic.

Accessories play a substantial role in completing the formal attire. Cufflinks, a pocket square, and a wristwatch are not just functional but also serve as tasteful embellishments that reflect attention to detail.

In terms of materials and colors, dark shades dominate formal evening wear. However, navy or dark grey suits can offer a subtle departure from the traditional black without detracting from the formality. Selecting high-quality fabrics such as wool, silk, or a blend can greatly enhance comfort, crucial for enjoying the night’s festivities to the fullest.

Lastly, the climate and location of the cruise should not be overlooked. For itineraries in warmer climates, opting for lighter materials and considering a breathable dress shirt can ensure comfort without compromising on style.

Accessorizing Tips to Elevate Your Formal Night Look

cruise formal dinner attire

Accessorizing for a formal night on a cruise is like adding the cherry on top of a delicious sundae. It's not just about the suit or dress; it's about the details that make an outfit truly shine. For men, selecting the right accessories can transform their look from simply nice to unequivocally elegant.

First and foremost, wristwatches are a must. A sleek, classic watch can serve as a statement piece, revealing a lot about personal style. Whether it's a vintage heirloom or a modern minimalist design, a watch adds a level of sophistication that few other accessories can.

Cufflinks also play a crucial role in a man's formal wear. They might be small, but their impact on an outfit's overall appeal is substantial. Opting for cufflinks that complement the shirt and suit color can tie the whole look together. For a more personalized touch, custom cufflinks or those that reflect personal hobbies or interests can serve as great conversation starters.

Don't forget about pocket squares . These little pieces of fabric can inject a pop of color or pattern to a suit, allowing for a bit of personal flair even in the most formal settings. The key is to ensure the pocket square complements the tie or shirt rather than matching it exactly, to avoid a look that's too coordinated.

Shoes, while not exactly an accessory, are also critical. Polished leather shoes are the gold standard for men's formal wear. The style—be it oxfords, derbies, or loafers—should match the level of formality of the event. Remember: the darker the shoe, the more formal it is.

By paying attention to these accessory tips, anyone can elevate their formal night look on a cruise. It's all about balancing tradition with personal style to create an ensemble that feels both appropriate and uniquely theirs.

Navigating Dress Codes for Different Cruise Lines

When embarking on a cruise, it's crucial to understand that dress codes can significantly vary from one line to another. This diversity not only caters to a broad audience but also dictates the formality of attire appropriate for evening events. For those looking to blend in and respect the onboard culture, paying close attention to these guidelines ensures a seamless experience.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean , for instance, opt for a more relaxed atmosphere during their formal nights. They suggest cocktail dresses for women and dress shirts with slacks for men. This approach encourages comfort while still maintaining a touch of elegance. Conversely, lines like Cunard and Holland America lean towards a traditional, more formal dress code. Here, evening gowns and tuxedos or dark suits are the norms, reflecting their penchant for classic cruise elegance.

For those who wish to dive deeper or have specific attire in mind, consulting the cruise line's website or reaching out to customer service prior to departure can provide clarity. Remember, while adhering to the dress code is part of the experience, cruise lines often accommodate guests who prefer not to participate in formal nights, offering alternative dining options where the dress code is more relaxed.

Mastering the art of dressing for a cruise's formal nights doesn't just add to the overall enjoyment; it also offers an opportunity to experiment with personal style within the framework set by the cruise line. Whether it’s embracing the casual elegance suggested by Carnival and Royal Caribbean or the timeless sophistication of Cunard and Holland America, there's room for every traveler to express themselves while respecting the established norms.

Key Takeaways

  • Cruise formal nights are special events where guests are encouraged to wear elegant attire, such as cocktail dresses and evening gowns for women, and tuxedos or suits for men, to match the ship's sophisticated atmosphere.

So before you set sail, a quick check with your cruise line can ensure you're perfectly poised for a night to remember.

Know what types of clothing, shoes and accessories are best to wear on a cruise.

When it comes to cruising in style, packing the right attire for every occasion is essential. Including a few key versatile items on your cruise packing list will prevent your suitcase (and the limited closet space in your stateroom) from becoming overcrowded – and keep you looking appropriate for all events.

Although most cruise lines outline their suggested dress codes in the FAQ sections of their websites, be sure to also review the specifics of your cruise itinerary. Not only will the destination and weather factor into what you should wear on your cruise, but you'll also want to know if formal nights require black-tie attire, themed dress parties need costumes or shore excursions necessitate unique clothing or footwear.

Whether you'll be lounging by the pool or attending a glamorous dinner, our list of must-have items and suggestions from industry experts will help you navigate dressing for your next cruise vacation.

For relaxing sea days, prioritize comfort above all else. Depending on your planned activities, any of the following casual options are considered acceptable attire:

  • Skirts or skorts
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Breezy lounge pants
  • Bathing suits
  • Cover-ups
  • Sun hats or baseball caps

Travel writer Jill Schildhouse always packs her VOTEPRETTY sundress . "This is my go-to cruise workhorse," says Schildhouse. "It's light and breezy, and the pockets come in very handy." She adds that the sundress can be worn to casual dinners on the ship or on shore excursions, and it can even double as a swimsuit cover-up. "I've taken it all over the world and it always arrives wrinkle-free," she says. Schildhouse has received many compliments on this classic sundress, which is available in multiple colors.

Sheri Griffiths, host of YouTube series CruiseTipsTV , suggests wearing comfortable, broken-in shoes on a cruise. She recommends avoiding brand-new footwear during your voyage to prevent blisters and daily discomfort. A basic sneaker can be worn for just about any cruise itinerary, from Alaska to the Caribbean . Griffiths says, "We love these Adidas Stan Smiths because they wear in quickly and have a timeless style."

In the evening, most cruise ships adopt a dress code in their main dining rooms and specialty restaurants that incorporate smart-casual or resort-wear attire. The following clothing choices will suffice:

  • Maxi dresses
  • Elegant tops
  • Long- or short-sleeved button-down shirts
  • Polo shirts
  • Blazers and ties (typically optional, unless otherwise stated)
  • Shawls or wraps
  • Closed-toe dress shoes
  • Sandals or heels

Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, shares her best advice for cruise footwear. "I always pack my Rothy's shoes for any cruise because they're infinitely comfortable, work as both a formal and [an] informal shoe and can be tossed in the laundry if they get dirty." She notes that she has several pairs, but two of her go-to styles are The Point and The Ballet Flat . McDaniel adds that the shoes work in every occasion, from strolling along the ship decks to perusing cobblestone streets on shore. "I bought both [pairs] 5 years ago, and they look as new today as they did out of the box despite literally hundreds of hours of wear," she says.

Jason Leppert, founder of YouTube channel Popular Cruising , always packs his signature Hawaiian shirts to wear day or night. He says, "I love the RSVLTS collection because they can play casually with shorts or more dressy with slacks for dinner."

Formal Nights

cruise formal dinner attire

While more casual these days, cruise formal nights still call for a bit more sophistication and style. Appropriate options include:

  • Cocktail dresses
  • Evening gowns
  • Dress shoes

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer for The Points Guy, always packs a gown or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal night. "I work from home and don't have a reason to dress up otherwise, so I look forward to it." Still, Kosciolek is a firm believer that travelers should wear what is most comfortable for them while on vacation. She adds, "My dinner won't taste any better or worse based on what others are wearing."

Mikkel Woodruff, editor of cruise site Sometimes Sailing , always brings her Omega Sailing Bracelet on cruises. She says, "I like to bring jewelry that reminds me of the ocean and being on the sea." Woodruff appreciates the bracelet's versatility, noting how easily it can go from shore excursions to formal evenings to everyday activities.

Shore Excursions

When heading off the ship for a shore excursion, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear to make the most of your adventures on land. Consider packing the following items:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Mesh water shoes
  • T-shirts or tank tops
  • A waterproof jacket

Freelance travel writer David Swanson shares his favorite versatile cruise shoes. He discovered a comfortable pair of Danner multitasking shoes that worked for dinners, casual events and multiple days of cycling on a recent European cruise. "I didn't think I'd find something to do dual duty, but I love this comfy pair from Danner, an outdoor brand [that is] new to me but has been around since 1932," says Swanson.

Paul Thornton, host of The Joy of Cruising Podcast , always packs his Coofandy linen shirts and shorts for hot Caribbean days and breezy cruise ship evenings. "I love Coofandy because they enable this senior to look 'youthful' on the beach and excursions," says Thornton. He adds that the brand is also his go-to retailer for White Party-themed nights on board.

Cruise Line Dress Codes

Dress codes can vary significantly from one cruise company to the next, so it's a good idea to check with your specific line before filling up your suitcase. Once you're on board, be sure to read the daily program for reminders about the dress codes required at the events and dining venues during your voyage.

Azamara Dress Code

  • Daytime: Fairly casual attire is suitable throughout Azamara 's ships during the day. However, baseball caps, distressed denim, tank tops and bathing suits cannot be worn at Discoveries, Aqualina and Prime C restaurants (and shoes are required).
  • Evening: At night, women typically wear casual dresses, skirts, pants, capris, blouses and knit tops, while men are welcome to wear collared golf and polo shirts, shorts and pants. Sport coats are optional. Note: There are no official formal nights on Azamara's voyages.
  • Themed Nights: Be sure to pack an all-white outfit for Azamara's signature White Night dinner and deck party.

Carnival Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Pack casual, comfortable attire to sail with Carnival Cruise Line , such as T-shirts, polo shirts or relaxed tops paired with shorts, capris, khakis or jeans. Athletic wear paired with a lightweight sweater or jacket are suitable for those looking to stay active.
  • "Cruise casual" attire for men typically suggests longer dress shorts, pants or jeans and a collared polo shirt. Women usually wear sundresses, blouses, skirts, dress shorts and capri pants.
  • "Cruise elegant" typically translates to dress slacks, dress shirts and sports coats (suggested) for men, with some wearing suits, ties or tuxedos. Women choose dresses (party or cocktail), pantsuits and elegant skirts with blouses, while some may wear evening gowns. Kids should follow the adult dress code, opting for school dance- or party-appropriate attire. Note: Jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, T-shirts, sportswear, exercise clothes, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suits are not permitted. The number of "cruise elegant" evenings varies based on the length of the cruise.
  • Carnival Journeys cruises feature a "Throwback Sea Day," where guests can relive the '80s by day (outfits included) and dress up for a themed Captain's Cocktail Party by night.
  • Cruises between early December and Christmas Day feature an "Ugly Sweater Contest."
  • Costumes are suggested for Halloween cruises between the end of September and October. However, when choosing a costume, keep in mind that full masks are prohibited (masks covering half of the face are allowed).

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, smart casual resort wear is suitable throughout Celebrity Cruises ' ships. (Think: sundresses, shorts, polos and button-down shirts paired with sandals, low heels and loafers.) Bathing suits with cover-ups, T-shirts, tank tops, hats and sunglasses are only appropriate poolside. Cruisers should avoid wearing these items in the dining areas.
  • Evening: Most evenings, guests are expected to wear comfortable yet tasteful attire. This entails dresses, skirts, long pants or jeans, stylish tops and button-down shirts. Shorts and flip-flops do not meet the evening dress code. Depending on your voyage, there will be one or two formal nights that require "evening chic" wear. Passengers can dress to impress in formal gowns, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, dressy jeans or blazers.

Costa Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, Costa Cruises ' passengers may wear casual clothing like T-shirts, shorts and sundresses. Beach clothing and flip-flops are not permitted in ship restaurants. Depending on the itinerary, some shore excursions may have specific dress codes.
  • Evening: Most nights require resort attire; however, Costa hosts one or two Elegant Evenings per cruise, when men may wear dark suits or tuxedos and women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses.
  • Themed Nights: Costa recommends that guests pack white clothing for its White Night events and white, red and green clothing and accessories for its Italy-themed evenings.

Cunard Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Shorts, T-shirts and sundresses are appropriate daytime wardrobe options on sailings with Cunard Line . Swimwear is acceptable by the pool but should not be worn in indoor dining areas.
  • Evening: In the evenings, passengers are asked to wear smart attire, which includes dress shirts and trousers for men, and cocktail dresses or sophisticated tops and skirts for women – similar to what you'd choose for dinner at a trendy restaurant or a special occasion. Voyages lasting seven nights host at least two Gala Evenings, during which guests are requested to adhere to a more formal dress code.
  • Themed Nights: Gala Evenings employ themes ranging from specific colors (such as black and white or red and gold outfits) to the roaring '20s to masquerade balls.

Disney Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: On Disney Cruise Line sailings, cruise casual attire is acceptable during the day; outfit options include sundresses and shorts and tees. Swimwear and tank tops are not permitted in dining venues.
  • Evening: After the sun sets, polished attire like collared shirts and jeans without rips are acceptable. Bathing suits, tees, tank tops and sports attire are not allowed. Adult-exclusive dining venues on Disney ships call for elegance; formal or semiformal wear is recommended.
  • Themed Nights: On three- and four-night sailings, there is typically a pirate-themed deck party and one optional dress-up night for guests of all ages. Sailings lasting seven nights or longer add one formal and one semiformal night, when women may wear a formal dress or pantsuit and men can opt for a suit or dress pants with a jacket.

Holland America Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Plan on wearing casual attire aboard Holland America Line 's ships during the day. When indoors, guests must wear shirts, cover-ups and footwear.
  • Evening: On most nights, smart casual clothing is acceptable. However, in table service restaurants, shorts, bathing suits, distressed jeans and tank tops are prohibited. Grand Voyages cruises host formal nights, when suits and dresses are appropriate.
  • Themed Nights: Once per cruise, Holland America hosts an Orange Party in celebration of King's Day. Pack your favorite orange clothing and accessories for this event, which honors the cruise line's Dutch heritage.

MSC Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: Guests of MSC Cruises dress fairly casual during the day in T-shirts and shorts.
  • Evening: Collared shirts, dresses and tailored pants are expected at night in the main dining rooms, specialty restaurants and entertainment venues. There is one optional Gala Night, when varying levels of elegance are acceptable. Guests should wear what makes them feel comfortable, ranging from tuxedos or ball gowns to dressy jeans and polo shirts.
  • Themed Nights: MSC hosts a White Night Party (where guests wear all white) and a Sunshine Party, where guests don cheerful colors.

Norwegian Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, plan to wear cruise casual attire like summer dresses, jeans, khakis, shorts and casual shirts on Norwegian Cruise Line voyages. At the buffet and outdoor restaurants, swimwear can be worn with a cover-up and footwear. In dining rooms and specialty restaurants, Norwegian does not permit tank tops for men, jeans with rips or tears, flip-flops, baseball caps or visors.
  • Evening: In Norwegian's upscale specialty restaurants, smart casual attire is the norm. Women can wear slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops, while men should opt for jeans or slacks, a collared shirt and closed-toed shoes. Children ages 12 and younger may wear shorts in all restaurants. On each cruise, there is one particular "Dress-Up or Not Night," when guests can wear fancier clothing (if they choose).
  • Themed Nights: Pack an all-white outfit for the White Hot Party and formal attire for Norwegian's Night Out.

Princess Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: In Princess Cruises ' restaurants and public spaces, casual resort wear is required. Shoes must be worn in the dining areas, and pool or beach attire, ball caps and frayed jeans are prohibited in restaurants.
  • Evening: On most nights, smart casual attire is acceptable in restaurants. However, on formal evenings, women may wear evening gowns, cocktail dresses or elegant pantsuits; while men may opt for tuxedos, dark suits or dinner jackets with slacks. The number of formal nights per cruise depends on the length of the sailing.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: Elevated resort wear, including jeans, shorts, T-shirts and tennis shoes, is appropriate before 6 p.m. on Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' ships.
  • Evening: At night, elegant casual attire is recommended. Women typically dresses, pantsuits or slacks paired with blouses or sweaters; a collared shirt and dress pants for men is the norm, with the option for sport jackets and ties. On cruises lasting 16 nights or longer, there are two evenings when guests can choose to wear formal or semiformal attire. Wardrobe choices include dark suits and cocktail dresses or tuxedos and gowns. Note: On the last night of every voyage, the dinner dress code is "relaxed casual" to accommodate guests packing for early morning flights.

Royal Caribbean International Dress Code

  • Daytime: A relaxed, casual style is acceptable during the day on cruises with Royal Caribbean International . However, swimwear should be limited to the pool deck.
  • Evening: On most nights, guests wear smart casual attire, which includes collared or button-up shirts, dresses, skirts, blouses and pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are encouraged but not required. On formal evenings and for the Chef's Table dining experience, cruisers are expected to wear black-tie attire, which includes tuxedos, suits with ties, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. The number of formal nights per cruise depends on the length of the sailing.
  • Themed Nights: Offered on cruises lasting four nights or longer, themed nights may include toga parties, masquerade balls, decade themes and black and white nights.

Silversea Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: Casual attire akin to what you'd wear at a five-star resort is suitable during the day aboard Silversea Cruises ' ships.
  • Evening: Evening attire is categorized into three groups: casual, informal and formal. On casual evenings, women wear pants, blouses, skirts, and casual dresses, while men wear open-neck shirts and slacks. On informal evenings, ladies often choose dresses or pantsuits, and gentlemen typically wear jackets (ties are optional). Formal night is always optional; if you choose to participate, outfits may include cocktail dresses, gowns, tuxedos and suits. The number of formal nights per cruise varies by voyage length.

Seabourn Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Casual resort wear like jeans and shorts are welcome in all lounges and dining venues on Seabourn Cruise Lines ' ships. Athletic apparel and swimwear should only be worn in the pool area, on the deck or at the spa and fitness center.
  • Evening: After 6 p.m., the dress code is "elegant casual." Men are expected to wear slacks with collared shirts or sweaters (jackets are optional), while women can choose pants, skirts, pantsuits or dresses. Elegant jeans are allowed in all dining venues except The Restaurant. On formal evenings in The Restaurant, men may wear tuxedos, suits or slacks and jackets, while women can opt for evening gowns and cocktail dresses.

Viking Ocean Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: On Viking Ocean Cruises ' ships, casual daytime clothing such as shorts, pants, jeans and comfortable walking shoes are acceptable. Athletic wear including exercise clothing, swimsuits and cover-ups may only be worn in the fitness center, pool zones and sports deck.
  • Evening: While there are no dedicated formal nights, the dress code after 6 p.m. calls for elegant casual attire for all dining venues, lounges, bars and theaters. Jeans are not permitted (with the exception of the World Cafe, where the dress code remains casual in the evenings). For women, wardrobe options include dresses, jumpsuits, skirts or slacks paired with elegant tops. Jackets and ties are optional for men, but trousers and collared shirts should be worn in the evenings.

Virgin Voyages Dress Code

  • Day or night, cruisers on Virgin Voyages ' ships are encouraged to wear attire that expresses their personal style. Just note: In restaurants, bathing suits are not permitted, and shoes are necessary. There are no formal nights; guests can dress up or down, depending on what makes them feel their best.
  • Themed Nights: Pack something scarlet red for the Scarlet Night Party, which occurs once per voyage.

What to wear on a cruise: Cruise attire and cruise line dress codes

Ashley Kosciolek

Have you ever had that nightmare where you're at work, in school or giving an important presentation, and you look down to discover you're wearing only your underwear (or worse, nothing at all)? If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing — and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared.

Packing acceptable attire for a cruise is simple if you remember a few general rules. Here, I'll break down some safe options if you're unsure, and I'll give an overview of the cruise dress codes for each of the "big eight" cruise lines.

What do people wear on a cruise?

cruise formal dinner attire

You can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing for sea days when you'll remain on board your ship. Although some lines will be more or less casual than that, it's a good baseline. But what is "resort casual"?

Khaki pants or shorts with loose-fitting, short-sleeve, button-down shirts or even nice, plain T-shirts work well for men. Women might opt for khaki shorts or palazzo pants with a nice top or a sundress. In most cases, nice jeans (dark wash with no holes) will work well also.

On most ships, this clothing will also be acceptable at night in the main dining rooms. For extra-fee restaurants, you might choose to dress up a bit more -- perhaps collared shirts or long-sleeve button-downs for men and slacks with a blouse, or a dress, for women.

For formal nights, men will want to bring a collared, button-down shirt at the bare minimum. For something a little more snazzy, bring a jacket to wear over your shirt, with or without a tie. Some men opt for suits or tuxes. For women, pantsuits and dressy pants outfits are a great choice, as are party dresses or even ball gowns.

Jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights, and cut-off shorts, baseball caps and flip-flops are banned at all times during dinner in the main dining rooms.

Another key piece of clothing to bring is a bathing suit. Whether you're headed to a warm-weather destination and plan to laze by the pool or on the beach, or you're visiting somewhere chilly but want to take advantage of your vessel's hot tubs, it's an item you won't want to forget. Note that cover-ups are required for entry at all restaurants and dining rooms, with the exception of walk-up, poolside window-service venues.

For shore excursions — particularly those in more rugged or active destinations that require a lot of walking — comfortable, casual clothing and sturdy footwear are a must. Bring layers for cold climates and moisture-wicking fabrics for places where it's warm or where you expect to work up a sweat.

Finally, check to see if your cruise line has any special theme nights planned. If so, you might want to pack an outfit for the white party or '80s night.

Carnival cruise dress code

cruise formal dinner attire

Carnival is one line where casual is the name of the game. Passengers will be just fine in jeans, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and bathing suits for their days on board or ashore.

At night, nice jeans and nice tops are perfect for eating in the main dining rooms.

On Carnival cruise formal nights, known as "cruise elegant" nights, cruisers wear everything from slacks with nice shirts to tuxes and ball gowns. However, most passengers stick to clothes that fall somewhere in the middle.

Voyages of six nights or longer will have two "cruise elegant" nights, while those five nights or shorter will see only one.

Celebrity Cruises dress code

Celebrity Cruises maintains a dress code that's best described as chic-casual. The demographic on board tends to be a bit more upscale than what you'll find on Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. That means khaki shorts with nice button-downs are more common than jean shorts and tank tops, although you won't be out of place in the latter.

For dinner, you'll want to dress it up even more, as the line has a smart-casual dress code at night in most restaurants, including the main dining room. Anything from unripped jeans to dress pants with nice blouses or button-downs is acceptable.

Are there formal nights on Celebrity cruises? Yes, there's one on every sailing of six nights or fewer and two on voyages of a week or more, but they have a different name. "Evening chic" nights encourage passengers to go all out with tuxes and evening gowns. However, most men choose slacks with collared or button-down shirts and jackets, sans ties. Most women choose slacks and nice blouses, sundresses or party dresses.

Disney Cruise Line dress code

cruise formal dinner attire

Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with children, and children like to be comfortable. With that in mind, just about anything goes in terms of dress on The Mouse's ships, which tend toward casual in spite of their stellar service and high price point.

It's not uncommon to see jeans, shorts, T-shirts or bathing suits during the day. Unlike most other lines, the same goes at dinnertime, with jeans and T-shirts just as common as dressier attire like slacks and button-downs.

Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages. For those, DCL suggests that men avoid jeans and wear jackets. Women should go with dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits.

Related: The 5 best cruise lines for families

Some of Disney Cruise Line's added-fee restaurants, such as Remy — one of the most expensive alternative eateries at sea — require jackets for men and don't allow jeans.

Each Disney sailing features a Pirate Night; cruisers wishing to participate should pack their best swashbuckling gear. As is standard at Disney parks, you're also likely to see large numbers of costumes and mouse ears at all hours of the day.

Holland America Line dress code

Although the dress code on Holland America Line ships is technically "cruise casual," you'll rarely spot anyone looking disheveled or like they just rolled out of bed. Most passengers tend toward resort wear or, at the bare minimum, nice jeans with pressed T-shirts.

The casual dress code carries through to dinner, but HAL cruisers can often be found dressing up a bit more — collared shirts or button-downs (sometimes with jackets) and slacks for men and slacks with nice tops or dresses for women.

As for Holland America formal nights, on sailings shorter than a week, there will be one "gala night," where travelers don evening or ball gowns, suits or tuxedos. Voyages of eight to 13 nights will see two gala nights, while any cruises of two weeks or longer will have three chances to dress to the nines.

MSC Cruises dress code

cruise formal dinner attire

What to wear on MSC cruises largely depends on the crowd with whom you're sailing. On Europe cruises, your fellow passengers are likely to dress up more often — even during the day — with skimpy resort wear and designer bathing suits gracing the pool deck as far as the eye can see. On those voyages, dinner is an even more fancy affair, with elegance as the norm. Expect to see glittering dresses and stylish pants and button-downs with dress shoes, even when it's not formal night.

On cruises that depart from the U.S., expect a more casual vibe, with jeans, T-shirts and bathing suits ruling the day. At night, you'll be fine with nice jeans and a collared shirt or a sundress, although you might want to dress up a bit more to match the ship's ambiance.

Are there formal nights on MSC cruises? Absolutely. They're called "gala dinners," and they appear at least once per voyage, but the number can vary by itinerary. The dress code is strict, with the buffet the only place that will allow T-shirts and shorts. You'll fit in best in a ball gown, cocktail dress, suit or tuxedo.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

Norwegian prides itself on allowing cruisers to dress as they please, providing a "come as you are" atmosphere during the day and at night. The most popular clothing is cruise casual, and passengers are free to wear whatever they'd like with an emphasis on comfort.

The only exception is at dinner, when a smart casual vibe encourages travelers to avoid torn clothes or outfits that are suggestive or skimpy.

In a nod to Norwegian's laid-back style, NCL formal nights — dubbed "Dress Up or Not" nights — provide a chance for you to doll up. However, it's not required, and you won't be turned away from the main dining rooms if you choose not to participate. Passengers have been spotted wearing everything from jeans and T-shirts to ball gowns and tuxes, and all coexist in perfect harmony.

Princess Cruises dress code

cruise formal dinner attire

Princess ' casual daytime mindset means you can wear the same types of clothing on board as you would during a day ashore — activewear, beachwear and jeans or T-shirts are totally fine.

Princess cruise formal nights are special because the line is one of the few industry holdouts in that it still has an official formal night. Its passengers enjoy a more traditional cruise experience, and they relish the romantic vibe that a formal night can provide. With that in mind, the line doesn't mention super-fancy garb like ball gowns or tuxes; instead, it advises suits or slacks with jackets for men and cocktail dresses or pantsuits for the ladies.

On voyages of less than a week, passengers should plan for one formal night, while sailings of a week to 13 days will have two, and cruises two weeks or longer will have three.

All other nights are listed as "smart casual," which means sundresses or pants with flowy tops for women and nice jeans or slacks with collared shirts for men will suffice.

Royal Caribbean dress code

As is the case with Carnival and Norwegian, Royal Caribbean is a casual line during the day. And, like Disney Cruise Line, it caters to a lot of families. Translation: Wear what allows you to have the most fun in the most comfort. Expect to see shorts or jeans with T-shirts or tank tops and bathing suits or beachwear almost exclusively during the daytime.

At night, you might want to put on something a little less comfortable, but it's certainly not required, unless it's a formal night. (Like Princess, Royal still has those.) What is confusing is that the line has three different dress codes, all of which are loosely enforced: casual, smart casual and formal. The ones that show up on your voyage will depend on the length of the cruise.

The only difference between the first two is that smart casual recommends pantsuits for ladies and jackets for the guys, but skirts or trousers with blouses or collared shirts are fine in both cases. Smart casual also strongly discourages jeans -- even nice ones.

Royal Caribbean formal nights have the highest expectations for passengers, urging them to put on their finest cocktail dresses, evening gowns, suits or tuxes. As with the line's smart casual dress code, jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights.

Formal Cruise Dinner Dresses: Essential Tips for Choosing the Perfect Fit

Trending colors and styles: formal cruise dresses for dinner in 2024, accessorizing for elegance: how to enhance your formal cruise dinner look, dress codes decoded: understanding the guidelines for formal cruise attire, flattering your figure: selecting the right silhouette for formal cruise dinner dresses.

Take accurate measurements: Use a measuring tape to accurately measure your bust, waist, and hipsThis will help you determine the appropriate size based on the dress retailer or designer's size chart.

  • Understand different sizing charts : Familiarize yourself with the specific sizing system used for the dress you're interested in. Some dresses may use standard sizing (XS, S, M, L) or numerical sizing (4, 6, 8, etc.), while others may use measurements in inches or centimeters.
  • Consider alterations if needed : If you find a dress you love but it doesn't fit perfectly, alterations can be an option. Consult a skilled seamstress who can make adjustments to ensure the dress fits your body shape and proportions flawlessly. This may involve taking in or letting out seams, adjusting hemlines, or altering straps.
  • Evaluate your body shape and proportions : Consider your body shape and proportions when selecting a dress style that flatters your figure. For example, empire waist dresses accentuate the waistline, while A-line or ballgown silhouettes create a balanced and elegant look.
  • Prioritize comfort : While finding the perfect fit is crucial, don't forget about comfort. Ensure that the dress allows for ease of movement and doesn't feel too tight or restrictive during the evening.

Staying abreast of the latest colors and styles ensures that your attire is not only fashionable but also reflects your personal style and enhances your overall look. Here's a closer look at what to expect in 2024:

Color palettes play a significant role in setting the tone for fashion trends, and formal cruise dinner dresses are no exception. In 2024, rich jewel tones are expected to make a splash, offering a regal and luxurious feel. Think deep emerald greens, vibrant sapphire blues, and opulent ruby reds. These colors not only exude elegance but also add a touch of sophistication to your dining ensemble. Additionally, pastel hues are anticipated to continue their popularity, providing a softer and more romantic aesthetic. Delicate blush pinks, pale lilacs, and powder blues are perfect for creating a feminine and ethereal look. Classic neutrals such as black, white, and navy will always remain timeless options, offering versatility and the ability to be easily accessorized.

As for dress styles, certain silhouettes are expected to take center stage in 2024. The A-line silhouette, with its flattering and universally appealing shape, is set to remain a favorite choice for formal cruise dinner dresses. It cinches at the waist and gently flares out, creating a graceful and elegant look that suits various body types. Mermaid or trumpet-style dresses, characterized by their fitted bodices and flared skirts that start below the hips, will continue to be popular for those seeking a more glamorous and dramatic appearance. The mermaid silhouette hugs the curves before flaring out, creating a captivating and red carpet-worthy effect. Another style to watch out for is the off-the-shoulder design, which showcases a hint of skin while exuding an alluring and sophisticated vibe. It adds a touch of modernity and femininity to your formal cruise dinner ensemble.

When choosing a formal cruise dinner dress, it's essential to strike a balance between embracing current trends and selecting a timeless design. Opt for styles that make you feel confident and comfortable, ensuring that the dress flatters your body shape and reflects your personal style. By exploring the trending colors and styles for formal cruise dinner dresses in 2024, you can draw inspiration and guidance to curate a fashion-forward and unforgettable look that aligns with your individuality. Remember, fashion trends may come and go, but your confidence and personal flair will always remain timeless.

The right accessories can enhance your dress, reflect your personal style, and make a lasting impression. Here are some valuable tips to consider:

Selecting the right jewelry : Jewelry can be a focal point of your overall look. When choosing pieces to complement your formal cruise dinner dress, consider factors such as the neckline and embellishments of the dress. For instance, if your dress has intricate detailing around the neckline, opt for a pair of elegant earrings rather than a statement necklace. Consider matching the metal tones of your jewelry with any hardware on your dress, such as silver with silver or gold with gold, to create a cohesive and polished look.

Choosing statement pieces : Incorporating one or two statement pieces can add a touch of glamour and personality to your attire. This could be a bold cocktail ring, a statement bracelet, or an eye-catching necklace. However, it's essential to strike a balance and not overpower your dress. If you choose a statement necklace, keep other jewelry minimal to avoid overwhelming the overall look.

Incorporating subtle accents : In addition to statement pieces, incorporating subtle accents can elevate your formal cruise dinner look. This can be achieved through delicate and tasteful accessories such as a thin waist belt to accentuate your silhouette or a sparkling hairpin to add a touch of sophistication to your hairstyle. These subtle accents can enhance your overall ensemble without detracting from the elegance of your dress.

Emphasizing balance : It's crucial to maintain balance when accessorizing. If your dress has intricate embellishments or bold colors, opt for simpler and more understated accessories to avoid overwhelming the overall look. Conversely, if your dress is more minimalistic, you can be more adventurous with your choice of accessories, allowing them to take center stage.

Hairstyles and makeup : Completing your formal cruise dinner look involves paying attention to your hairstyle and makeup. Consider the neckline of your dress when deciding whether to wear your hair up or down. Updos can showcase intricate necklines while flowing locks can beautifully complement strapless or off-the-shoulder styles. Similarly, your makeup should enhance your features while maintaining a sense of elegance. Choose a color palette and techniques that flatter your skin tone and coordinate with your dress.

Cruise ships often have specific guidelines for different occasions, and understanding these dress codes is crucial to ensure you are appropriately attired for formal cruise dinners. Here's a breakdown of the typical dress codes and what they entail:

  • Formal dress code : Formal evenings on a cruise ship call for elegant and sophisticated attire. Women are expected to wear formal cruise dinner dresses, such as floor-length gowns, cocktail dresses, or dressy separates. Opt for luxurious fabrics, stylish silhouettes, and refined embellishments. Men should don tuxedos, formal suits, or dinner jackets paired with dress pants, collared shirts, and ties. It's essential to embrace a polished and refined look that matches the grandeur of the formal setting.
  • Semi-formal dress code : Semi-formal dress codes are slightly less formal but still require an elegant appearance. For women, this can mean wearing knee-length cocktail dresses, stylish skirts paired with dressy tops, or elegant pantsuits. Men can opt for suits in dark or neutral colors, paired with dress shirts and ties. The aim is to maintain a sophisticated yet less extravagant look compared to the formal dress code.
  • Black-tie optional dress code : Black-tie optional dress codes provide a bit more flexibility. Women have the choice of wearing formal cruise dinner dresses, including floor-length gowns, cocktail dresses, or dressy separates. Men can choose to wear either a tuxedo or a formal suit with a tie. This dress code allows for a touch of personal style while still adhering to a formal standard.

It's important to note that dress codes may vary slightly depending on the cruise line, cultural considerations, or regional preferences. Some cruise lines may have specific theme nights or regional variations that influence the dress code guidelines. For instance, a tropical-themed cruise might call for more relaxed and colorful attire, while a European cruise might lean towards a more classic and formal approach. Researching and understanding any specific dress code nuances associated with your cruise can help you prepare accordingly and avoid any surprises.

By decoding the dress codes for formal cruise attire, you can ensure that you are dressed appropriately for formal cruise dinners. Understanding the expectations for each dress code empowers you to select the perfect formal cruise dinner dress that aligns with the occasion. Remember, embracing the dress code not only showcases your respect for the event but also allows you to fully immerse yourself in the elegant and enchanting atmosphere of a formal cruise dinner.

The right silhouette can accentuate your assets, camouflage any areas of concern, and create a balanced and proportionate appearance. Here's a closer look at how different dress silhouettes can flatter various body types:

Empire waist silhouette : The empire waist silhouette features a high waistline that sits just below the bust, with a flowing skirt that skims over the midsection and hips. This silhouette is perfect for creating a slimming effect and emphasizing the bust. It works well for those with a smaller bust or an apple-shaped body, as it draws attention upwards and creates the illusion of a defined waist.

Sheath silhouette : The sheath silhouette is characterized by a slim and straight shape that closely follows the contours of the body. It offers a sleek and elegant look and works well for hourglass figures, as it accentuates curves. It can also create a lengthening effect for petite frames. Choose a sheath dress with strategic darts or paneling to emphasize or create curves, depending on your body type.

A-line silhouette : The A-line silhouette is universally flattering and features a fitted bodice that gradually flares out from the waist, resembling the shape of the letter "A." This silhouette works well for most body types, particularly pear-shaped figures, as it skims over the hips and thighs while creating a balanced and graceful look. It can also add a touch of romance and femininity to your formal cruise dinner ensemble.

Ballgown silhouette : The ballgown silhouette is dramatic and glamorous, with a fitted bodice and a full, voluminous skirt that creates a striking hourglass shape. This silhouette works well for those with an hourglass figure or those looking to create a more defined waistline. However, it can be overwhelming for petite frames or those with a fuller bust. Consider your proportions and ensure the ballgown silhouette is well-balanced on your frame.

When choosing a dress silhouette, consider not only your body shape but also your personal style and comfort. Experiment with different necklines to complement your figure, whether it's a plunging V-neck, sweetheart neckline, or boat neckline. Strategic detailing such as ruching, pleating, or beading can also enhance or draw attention to specific areas.

By understanding your body shape and selecting the right dress silhouette, you can confidently choose formal cruise dinner dresses that flatter your figure and make you feel beautiful. Remember, the goal is to embrace and celebrate your unique body shape while highlighting your best features. When you feel confident in your outfit, it radiates throughout the evening, allowing you to fully enjoy the elegance and sophistication of a formal cruise dinner.

In conclusion, mastering the art of dressing for formal cruise dinners requires careful consideration of various elements, from finding the perfect fit to staying up-to-date with the latest trends. By understanding the dress codes, selecting the right silhouette for your body type, and accessorizing with finesse, you can create a truly remarkable and elegant ensemble. Remember, formal cruise dinners are an opportunity to showcase your personal style and exude confidence. Whether you opt for a classic floor-length gown, a chic cocktail dress, or a trendy separates combination, let your outfit reflect your unique personality while adhering to the guidelines of the occasion. With these tips and insights in mind, you'll be ready to embark on a memorable and stylish cruise dinner experience, leaving a lasting impression with your impeccable formal attire.

Cruises are a very casual way to travel. However, the formal dining room is the one place where rules most certainly apply. Trying to decipher a cruise dress code can be cryptic if you’ve never sailed before.

While guidelines can vary between cruise lines, these general rules apply. Read on to learn what to wear for casual and formal cruise dinner attire, as well as resort wear on board!

Understanding the Cruise Dress Code

Written By: Renée Olson

Packing for a cruise can be confusing and tricky. Perhaps when you learned there would be formal nights onboard, you had nightmarish flashbacks to ill-fitting prom tuxes and figure skater-style sequin dresses.

Don’t worry–being ultra-casual won’t be a hindrance on your cruise, and you can fit in with the formal dining nights with ease. While people certainly rock formal wear, my goal is to pack carryon only for the flights to and from the cruise terminals and to make sure my clothes in my travel capsule wardrobe are as versatile as possible.

Packing Tips

Yes, you’re on vacation – but the cruise dress code of “no shoes, no shirt” still applies when you aren’t by the pool. Make sure you’re dressed when shopping onboard, playing in the casino, or having lunch at the buffet.

  • Bring a skirt that you can easily wear with two tops, or a peplum top to wear over a dress to maximize your dinner options.
  • Bring sundresses that you can wear to dinner one night and then worn as a cover up the next day.
  • Choose sandals that are elegant and can be worn from beach to dinner. Faux leather are a great choice.
  • Bring one pair of heels that match everything and one clutch for dinner to avoid over packing.
  • Check with your cruise line’s policy on denim in the dining room and shorts for men.
  • Error on the side of “over dressed” if you’re unsure how formal your ship is.
The key to packing light is to use packing cubes to compress your clothing as shown in this video!

On Board Attire

Tank tops, sundresses, sandals, shorts and the like are all fair game. Just make sure you have a pair of shoes and cover-up over your bikini. Bring at least two bathing suits – you won’t want to wear a suit that is still wet from yesterday’s swim!

Casual/Smart Casual

Cruise ships tend to have more casual nights in the dining room, but according to the cruise dress code this doesn’t mean sloppy.

Choose pretty sundresses, flowy skirts, or lightweight pants for these evenings. Sophisticated sandals are appropriate, if you’d prefer, in lieu of heels. Leave the beach flip-flops with your bathing suit.

collared shirts

Men should wear casual slacks, khakis and open collared shirts are perfect for these nights. Boat shoes or other loafers are the shoe of choice for most male cruisers. Flip-flops for men in the dining room generally aren’t allowed.

Business Casual

Although less common these days, some cruises have business casual nights as well. These nights should be one step up from casual. Add a jacket for men, heels for the ladies.

Business casual doesn’t mean office attire, but it does mean slightly nicer attire in terms of a cruise dress code. Glam up your more casual outfits with statement jewelry or a beautiful scarf.

Formal/Elegant

The cruise dress code for formal or elegant attire is cocktail or black tie on these nights. Keep in mind; if you don’t feel like packing dressier clothing, you can also have dinner in the casual dining room. But we say have fun with it. How often are you able to dress up?

This is your night to shine in cocktail dresses or floor length gowns. Choose fabrics that are special and appear high end, such as silk, sequins, or chiffon. Imagine you’re going to a formal wedding and want to look your best. Avoid cotton dresses or casual pants on these evenings.

If you’re not a fan of dresses, opt for a sleek and chic pantsuit instead!

Suit and Tie

As for men, don’t leave your beautiful girl without a dashing escort! Pack your suit and tie (and don’t forget the charm).

We were well and truly ‘caught’ with a recent Alaska cruise on one of the prestigious cruise lines…..We had pre-booked a dinner in one of the special restaurants where you pay for that dinner, before we left home, on a specific night. We were not intending to attend any of the formal events. Unfortunately, we were not told at any time before cruising that the night we had chosen was a ‘Formal’ night and my husband and I went to dinner in our best (casual) travelling clothes, only to be told that we would not be allowed in as my husband was not wearing a jacket! We explained our dilemma (we were on a 10 week trip through North America & Scandinavia-no need for formal clothes!!!) and the maitre d’ thought for a moment before giving my husband a dark jacket he had handy, telling him to hang it over his arm as he walked in and out. SO gracious a solution,BUT, it would have been averted if we had been told what the formal nights were when booking our special dinner night.Full marks to the staff member (and we had a really wonderful dinner!!).

alex

Wow that sounds horrible! You should have been told in advance especially with a super strict dress code. Always a good idea to pack a versatile dress and some costume jewelry – it’s amazing how a little sparkle goes a long way!

Do you have to dress up on a cruise?

Ultimate Guide: What to Wear on a Cruise - Dress Code Tips for Formal Nights & More | 15

The dress code on a cruise ship can vary depending on the cruise line and specific sailing. While some cruise lines have formal nights where dressing up is recommended, others have more relaxed dress codes. You must check the dress code guidelines provided by your cruise line and plan your attire accordingly.

Some cruises may have specific dress code requirements for certain events or venues onboard. For example, formal or gala evenings may call for more elegant attire, such as cocktail dresses, evening gowns, tuxedos, or suits. These dressier nights allow you to celebrate and showcase your sophisticated style while enjoying a special evening onboard.

On the other hand, many cruise lines also offer more casual dining options where you can dress comfortably. Various clothing options are essential to accommodate different activities and dress codes onboard. This can include casual, comfortable outfits for daytime activities and more formal attire for special events or evenings.

Dressing up on a cruise is not mandatory, but it can enhance the overall experience and add to the festive atmosphere onboard. Whether you embrace formal nights or opt for a more relaxed dress code, the key is to feel comfortable and confident in what you wear.

What do you wear on a dressier night on a cruise?

Ultimate Guide: What to Wear on a Cruise - Dress Code Tips for Formal Nights & More | 15

Dressier nights on a cruise, known as formal or gala evenings, allow one to dress up and celebrate. Cocktail dresses, evening gowns, tuxedos, or suits are appropriate for these occasions. It’s a chance to showcase more elegant and sophisticated attire while enjoying a special evening onboard.

On dressier nights, you can embrace a more glamorous and refined look. Ladies can opt for a stunning cocktail dress or an elegant evening gown that complements the occasion. Choose fabrics like chiffon or silk to add a touch of luxury to your ensemble. Complete your look with stylish heels and statement jewelry to enhance your overall appearance.

Gentlemen can dress to impress with a tailored tuxedo or a well-fitted suit. Pair it with a crisp dress shirt, a tie, and polished dress shoes for a sophisticated look. Consider adding a pocket square or cufflinks to elevate your outfit further. Remember to ensure your attire is well-pressed and the details are well-groomed.

What do you wear on cruises during the day?

Ultimate Guide: What to Wear on a Cruise - Dress Code Tips for Formal Nights & More | 15

Casual and comfortable attire is essential during a cruise. Whether you’re planning to lounge by the pool, explore the ports of call, or participate in fun onboard activities, it’s essential to dress appropriately for the weather and the activities planned for the day.

Shorts and T-shirts are popular for men and women, providing a relaxed and breezy look. Sundresses are also an excellent option for women, offering a stylish yet comfortable outfit. To keep cool under the sun, opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics.

Comfortable shoes are key when it comes to footwear. Sneakers or sandals with cushioned soles are ideal for long walks or excursions, while flip-flops or water-resistant slides are perfect for poolside relaxation. Remember to pack a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and a hat for added sun protection.

Remember that the daytime dress code on a cruise is generally laid-back and relaxed. So, embrace the casual nature of your cruise vacation and enjoy the freedom to dress comfortably while you explore and unwind during the day.

What clothes should you be sure to pack for a cruise?

blue luggage with folded clothes

When preparing for a cruise, it’s essential to pack various clothing to suit different activities and occasions. Below are some essential items you should consider including in your cruise wardrobe:

Don’t forget to pack your favorite swimsuits for fun-filled days by the pool or at the beach. Whether you prefer a one-piece or a bikini, bring enough options to enjoy the sun and water.

Swim coverups

Stay stylish and comfortable with swim coverups. They provide coverage when you’re away from the water and can be a fashionable accessory for your poolside or beachside looks.

Sweater or fleece

A lightweight sweater or fleece with air conditioning is essential, especially for cooler evenings or areas of the ship. A cozy layer is always a good idea to keep warm and comfortable.

Sunglasses and sun hats

Protect your eyes and skin from the sun’s rays with sunglasses and sun hats. These accessories shield you from harmful UV rays and add a touch of style to your cruise outfits.

Wear a watch to keep track of time on your cruise adventure. This practical accessory ensures you won’t miss any planned activities or dining reservations. Many cruisers might use a phone, which can be tricky when traveling. So a standard watch can help you stay on “ships time” throughout your cruise easier. It’s not uncommon during a cruise for the ship’s time to change once or more as you travel great distances.

Casual, comfortable attire

Opt for casual and comfortable attire for daytime activities onboard or during port excursions. T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and sneakers are perfect options for exploring, lounging, and participating in onboard activities.

Dinner or “smart casual” attire

Regarding evening dining or “smart casual” dress codes, bring a selection of pants, jeans, a dress or skirt, blouses, a nice top, or a button-down shirt. These outfits are perfect for a delicious dinner while looking stylish and put-together.

Layering is essential to adjusting to changing temperatures throughout the day. Bring lightweight cardigans, wraps, or jackets that can easily be added or removed to accommodate different environments, both onboard and ashore.

What kind of shoes should you wear on a cruise?

pair of brown leather casual shoes on table

Choosing the proper footwear for a cruise is vital for comfort and style. Here are some options to consider:

Flip flops, sandals, or waterproof slides

Flip-flops, sandals, or waterproof slides are a must for pool days and beach excursions. They are easy to slip on and off and perfect for lounging by the pool or exploring sandy shores. Many of the beaches in the Caribbean are beautiful, but they can also be rocky, and I often wear strap-on water sandals to protect my feet from any sharp rocks or debris. Many cruise line pool decks can get extremely hot, so water shoes are vital for kids who want to ride the slides. Shoes often have to be removed before sliding down, so consider this. Kids should always have water shoes for the beach as the sand can also be hot and rocky.

Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes

If you plan to go on shore excursions or explore the cruise ship extensively, opt for sneakers or comfortable walking shoes. These will provide the support and comfort needed for long walks and ensure you can enjoy your adventures without discomfort.

Boots are an excellent option for colder weather destinations or activities like hiking. They provide extra warmth and protection, making them suitable for outdoor pursuits.

Shoes or sandals for dinner

When going to dinner on a cruise, bringing dressier shoes to elevate your outfit is a good idea. Whether it’s a formal night or a casual evening, having the right shoes can add a touch of elegance to your dining experience.

Understanding Cruise Dress Codes

Embarking on a cruise entails knowing the nuances of cruise attire. As passengers, we navigate a sea of clothing options divided into distinct categories, each tailored to a specific part of the cruise experience. Casual dress cruises have reshaped our views on sea travel, offering comfort without compromising charm. Yet, the essence of cruise elegance remains an inviting prospect for those who relish the opportunity to dress up. Much of this depends on the cruise line and the type of cruise experience it offers its guests.

Cruise Wear for Sophisticated Evenings at Sea

Guests dining at Indochine Restaurant

When the sun dips below the horizon and the evening lights begin to twinkle on deck, cruise guests delight in the opportunity to showcase their style with cruise evening wear. As the ambiance onboard shifts to a more elegant setting, passengers are faced with the delightful decision of what to wear to encapsulate the sophistication of the sea at night.

Non-Formal Night Outfit Ideas

For those evenings when the dress code is relaxed yet chic, passengers seek attire that balances comfort and fashion. Women might opt for women’s cruise evening wear that includes flowy dresses or sleek jumpsuits paired with delicate jewelry, while men can don men’s cruise wear clothing such as lightweight blazers over casual shirts paired with chinos. These versatile outfits resonate with the laid-back luxury of a cruise and ensure a memorable dinner under the stars or a serene walk along the promenade deck.

‘Dress Your Best’ – Selecting Attire for Cruise Elegant Evenings

Formal Night

Evening dresses for cruise ships can include dazzling gowns with tasteful cuts or sophisticated cocktail dresses that reflect a timeless cruise cocktail attire . Men are encouraged to don suits or sports coats, adding a touch of suavity with a tie or a pocket square, capturing the essence of cruise line clothing . The tradition of “dressing your best” remains intrinsic to the cruise experience, inviting all aboard to indulge in the night’s festivities with style and grace.

Gala Nights and Special Themes

Themed evenings and gala nights are the hallmarks of cruise entertainment, demanding a wardrobe that elevates your style to match the night’s festivities. From the lively spirit of a themed party to the sophisticated ambiance of a gala, every event presents an opportunity to showcase your fashion while adhering to the cruise party dress code .

The Glamour of Gala Night: A Guide to Upscale Attire

When it comes to gala nights at sea, envision a red-carpet event where everyone is a celebrity. These nights are synonymous with gala night attire , where sequins, ties, and flowing gowns become the norm. The key to mastering cruise formal night attire is understanding the event’s tone:

For a traditional ‘Captain’s Gala,’ think timeless elegance with a modern twist – a tailored suit for men and an evening gown or a chic cocktail dress for women. But don’t fret if your closet isn’t brimming with tuxedos and ball gowns – a dark suit and a sophisticated little black dress can go a long way.

Preparing for Themed Parties: Costume Ideas and Tips

Themed cruise events vary widely from nautical nuances to roaring twenties extravaganzas. For instance, a white night on a cruise suggests guests don all shades of white, turning the deck into a sea of elegance and purity. To ensure you’re prepared, research the kind of parties planned on your cruise and consider these ideas:

  • Luminous white attire for “White Night” events, from sundresses to smart-casual shirts.
  • Pirate-themed accessories for a buccaneer bash, including eye patches and bandanas.
  • 70s disco gear for retro dancing featuring colorful jumpsuits and flared pants.

Remember, while dressing up is part of the fun, comfort shouldn’t take a backseat. Opt for themed cruise attire that allows you to enjoy the party from dusk till dawn.

Adapting Cruise Wardrobe to Varied Climates

Icy Strait Point

When planning your wardrobe for a cruise, considering the climate is paramount. For those setting sail on a Caribbean cruise, you’re likely heading to tropical locations with a hot and humid forecast. Here, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential. Consider packing items like linen shirts, flowy dresses, and shorts. Plus, don’t forget swimwear for those beach excursions and comfortable sandals that tackle sand and deck.

Layering is critical if your destination is a bit cooler or you’re planning what to wear on a cruise to Hawaii in the breezier months. Start with a base of moisture-wicking fabrics and add layers such as cardigans, pullovers, or light jackets that you can remove or add as needed. This approach allows for seamless transitions from the calm wind on the deck to the warmer interior spaces of the ship.

  • April Showers: Waterproof jackets and hoodies for unexpected rain
  • Summer Sun: Extra sun protection, including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses
  • Tropical Nights: Light cardigans or wraps for evenings on the deck
  • Shore Excursions: Comfortable walking shoes plus a small backpack for day trip

Final Thoughts

As your voyage draws near, remember that the key to a seamless and enjoyable cruise experience is finding that perfect balance between practicality and sophistication in your wardrobe. Thoughtfully curated cruise ship outfits ensure adherence to the cruise line dress code and give you the confidence to partake in every activity easily. Whether you’re soaking up the sun on deck or indulging in a gourmet dinner under the stars, the right outfits to wear on a cruise can significantly enhance your overall enjoyment.

Should I pack a formal gown for a cruise?

Packing a formal gown for a cruise is recommended if you plan to attend formal nights. However, a cocktail dress or dressy outfit will also be good enough to avoid bringing a gown.

Are there specific dress codes for activities during the day on a cruise?

During the day on a cruise, resort wear or casual attire is usually acceptable for most activities. However, if extraordinary events or excursions are planned, you may need to pack specific attire

Packing Souvenirs from your Cruise Travels

What To Wear On A Cruise: Dressing For The Vacation Of Your Dreams

By Taylor Fuller | Published on January 24, 2024

So you've booked your dream vacation sailing on the open seas, but you're not sure what to wear on a cruise. Don't worry — cruise vacations take the stress out of travel, and your wardrobe should reflect the laid-back vibes you'll feel as you sail through paradise. The quintessential cruise style is easy to pull off; think vibrant colors, tropical prints and lightweight fabrics.

When you're planning a weekend away, it's important to pack smart. Whether your plan is to cruise through islands, posting up on stunning beaches and swimming in warm, crystal-clear waters, or to hike ancient ruins and wander through medeival cities, this guide will help you pick out the best cruise wear for your trip.

1. What To Wear On A Weekend Getaway Cruise

Packing outfits for vacation can be overwhelming, especially if you're one to overpack for a trip. If that's you, a weekend getaway  can be the perfect challenge for you to curb your bad habits and stick to packing for versatility. The best advice I can give is to pack for the vacation you want to have. Weekend cruises are a great way to unwind and explore another world in a short amount of time, so pack for busy days where you'll be going from the beach to a museum, out to lunch and then back to the beach. For example, pack a swimsuit and some chic sunglasses for the relaxing beach day you're craving, and bring along a breezy cover-up and sandals or comfortable shoes, so you can check out the cool town during lunchtime.

If you're new to cruising, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that there are activities and events that happen onboard the ship in the evenings and on sea days. Most cruise vacations include at least one formal night where everyone dresses their best for a special dinner. Cruise formal wear still embraces the relaxed energy of sailing, so outfits like a lightweight sport coat, chinos, a colorful dress or a jumpsuit will fit right in. You'll also want to include some smart casual looks, which means something that's a step up from sneakers and sweatpants for your other evening meals.

For sea days when traveling in a warmer climate, you'll definitely want a swimsuit if you plan to take advantage of the onboard water park. However, if you're cruising through a colder region like Canada, you'll want a jacket and some warm layers, so you can stay comfortable on deck.

2. Packing For Your Vacation Plans

Young Family with a Child Packing for Holiday

Planning ahead for your cruise vacation will help you pack for every moment. Most onshore excursions require reservations, so discuss with your family or travel buddies what kind of activities you cannot miss on your trip ahead of time. If you book an excursion that requires physical activity, opt for comfortable clothing you can move around in like leggings, shorts, sneakers, hiking boots if you're hitting trails, a light jacket (depending on the region you're exploring) and a sturdy backpack. Though hiking boots can take up precious suitcase space, they're essential for exploring a tropical jungle or mountainous terrain, and can double as comfortable shoes for long days spent sightseeing. If you have whale-watching on your agenda, pack a jacket in case it's cold or misty, a hat so you don't get sunburnt, and binoculars.

A quick weekend cruise can take you to some amazing places. I recommend using your time wisely and trying to see as much as you can. For example, a two-night Cyprus cruise  is all about beaches, history and incredible cuisine. Pack outfits that you'll be comfortable in even when the sun is scorching hot, so you don't have to worry about going back to the ship to get changed midday. Effortless flowy skirts and airy linen shirts make great cover-ups for swimwear that will protect your skin from the sun as you explore ancient sites. Comfortable shoes are a must for a trip like this, whether that's a flat sandal with straps or sneakers. Just make sure you're wearing something that won't get caught in the cobblestone streets of Cyprus. Add some fun accessories like a hat or sunglasses and a tote bag to carry all of your souvenirs, and voila  — you have an all-day outfit mapped out.

If cooler climes and rugged mountains call to you, consider a cruise to Canada . Of course, British Columbia requires a different packing strategy than a trip to The Bahamas or the Mediterranean. Even when cruising in the summer months, be sure to dress for the destination, not the season — layers are your friend here. Pack some thin thermals you can layer under your clothes if necessary, so you can spend the day comfortably strolling along the Inner Harbour and checking out Victoria's most notable landmarks. Don't forget a hat and gloves and some wool socks to keep your toes warm, too! When you're hanging out onboard, a thin, packable windbreaker or jacket will come in handy, so you can sit out on the deck with a cup of coffee, admiring the breathtaking scenery.

Still unsure about what to wear on a cruise? Whether you're packing cruisewear for women, men or non-binary people, I recommend getting creative. My favorite part of going on a vacation is that I get to wear things I wouldn't normally wear in my day-to-day. I love putting together patterns and colors that may feel a little funky and wearing sunglasses the size of my face. Take risks with your wardrobe! Your dream vacation will only be that much more memorable.

No matter what type of cruise you're looking for, you're sure to have a blast when you pack the perfect cruise wardrobe. Whether you're interested in history and want to explore ruins or would rather relax on the beach with a cold beverage in hand, there's a cruise getaway waiting for you. So what are you waiting for? Start searching for your next weekend adventure.

Get away this weekend on a cruise .

Cruise Dining Dress Codes: What To Wear And When

Table of Contents

Are you planning to embark on a luxurious cruise vacation but find yourself perplexed about what to wear for dinner? Look no further! In this article, we will guide you through the various dining dress codes you may encounter on a cruise ship, ensuring that you always dress appropriately for each occasion. So whether you’re dining at the elegant formal restaurants or indulging in a more casual affair, we’ve got you covered with all the tips and tricks you need to make a stylish statement while enjoying your delectable meals on board.

Casual Dining

Casual dining aboard a cruise ship is all about comfort and relaxation. During the day, you can enjoy a laid-back atmosphere where no specific dress code is enforced. You can wear your favorite shorts, t-shirts, or jeans, and just focus on having a great time. Whether you’re exploring the ship’s amenities , lounging by the pool, or enjoying a leisurely meal, daytime casual attire allows you to be yourself and feel at ease.

In the evening, the casual dress code still applies, but with a slightly more refined touch. You can opt for a dress or a skirt paired with a blouse for women, and slacks or khakis with a collared shirt for men. This relaxed yet polished look is perfect for enjoying the ship’s various casual dining options, such as buffet-style restaurants or casual eateries. So go ahead and dine in style while maintaining the casual and friendly vibe of the cruise experience.

Formal Dining

Formal dining nights on a cruise offer a perfect opportunity to dress up and enjoy a touch of elegance. On formal nights, you can expect a more sophisticated ambiance, with special menus and additional decorative touches. These evenings provide an opportunity to showcase your style and grace.

During formal nights, women often opt for cocktail dresses, elegant evening gowns, or dressy pantsuits. Men typically wear tuxedos, suits, or dress shirts paired with slacks and a tie. These classic and timeless outfits create a glamorous atmosphere and make formal dining a truly memorable experience. So take advantage of the formal nights on your cruise to dress to impress and feel like royalty for a night.

Informal Dining

Informal dining offers a middle ground between casual and formal, providing a relaxed yet presentable atmosphere for your dining experience. Smart casual attire is appropriate for informal nights. This dress code allows for a stylish and fashionable look without being overly formal.

For women, smart casual might include a stylish dress, a skirt or pants paired with a blouse, or a blouse and slacks combination. Men can choose from a well-tailored jacket or blazer with slacks, a dress shirt with slacks and a tie, or a stylish sweater with khakis. This dress code strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication, ensuring you feel confident and at ease while enjoying an excellent meal in a refined setting.

Resort casual dining is another option for those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere while still maintaining a touch of style. Resort casual attire is similar to smart casual, but with a more vacation-oriented vibe. Think sundresses, linen pants, and polo shirts. This dress code is ideal for those hot summer evenings when you want to feel comfortable and effortlessly chic.

Specialty Restaurants

specialty restaurants offer a unique dining experience with a focus on expertly crafted dishes and personalized service. Upscale casual attire is typically recommended for these establishments. This dress code allows you to enjoy a refined dining experience while keeping a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

For women, upscale casual might involve a fashionable dress, a skirt or pants paired with a stylish top, or a polished jumpsuit. Men can opt for a suit without a tie, a dress shirt with slacks, or a blazer with khakis. By adhering to the upscale casual dress code, you can fully immerse yourself in the upscale ambiance of specialty restaurants and savor the culinary delights on offer.

Resort elegant is another dress code commonly seen in specialty restaurants. Resort elegant attire strikes a balance between formal and casual, offering a sophisticated yet relaxed look. Women can choose from elegant cocktail dresses, dressy pantsuits, or stylish separates. Men often opt for a tailored suit, a dress shirt paired with slacks, or a blazer with dress pants. Embracing resort elegant attire allows you to enjoy the luxurious atmosphere of specialty restaurants without the strict formality of formal nights.

Poolside Dining

When it’s time to grab a bite to eat by the pool, comfort and relaxation are key. Casual swimwear is perfectly acceptable for poolside dining during the day . After all, you’re there to enjoy the sun and take a dip in the pool, so why not dress the part? Feel free to wear your favorite swimsuit or swim trunks and embrace the vacation vibe.

While casual swimwear is ideal for daytime poolside dining, remember that cover-ups are required when dining near the pool in the evening. This is to ensure that all guests remain comfortable and respectful of the dining environment. So when enjoying a poolside meal after sunset, simply throw on a light cover-up over your swimsuit for a more appropriate and considerate look.

Theme Nights

Theme nights add an extra element of fun and excitement to your cruise dining experience. On these special evenings, the dress code often aligns with the chosen theme or costume attire. It’s an opportunity to let your creativity shine and join in the festivities with fellow cruisers.

Costume or theme attire means dressing up in accordance with the designated theme for the evening. This could mean anything from Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts for a tropical theme, to pirates and sailors for a nautical-themed night. The options are endless, and it’s all about embracing the theme and having a blast while enjoying your meal.

Resort wear is another dress code commonly seen during theme nights. This dress code encourages cruisers to channel a relaxed and vacation-oriented style. Think breezy dresses, linen shirts, and colorful accessories. Resort wear captures the essence of a tropical getaway and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the cruise’s festive atmosphere .

Dining Etiquette

While dress codes play an important role in cruise dining, it’s also essential to consider dining etiquette to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone. Table manners are an essential part of dining etiquette and involve practicing good hygiene, being mindful of personal space, and respecting fellow diners.

Basic etiquette tips include using your utensils correctly, chewing with your mouth closed, and engaging in polite conversation. Additionally, it’s important to arrive on time for your dining reservation and be considerate of the waitstaff and their service. By following these basic guidelines, you can contribute to a positive and enjoyable dining experience for yourself and those around you.

Packing Tips

Now that you’re familiar with the various dress codes and dining etiquette, it’s time to pack your suitcase accordingly. Mix-and-match outfits are a great way to maximize your outfit options without overpacking. Choose versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down, creating different looks for every dining occasion.

Additionally, don’t forget to pack dressy accessories to elevate your outfits and add that extra touch of elegance. Accessories like statement necklaces, bow ties, or a stylish belt can instantly transform a simple outfit into a sophisticated ensemble. So be sure to include a few key accessories that can easily be paired with different outfits, allowing you to showcase your personal style throughout your cruise.

Common FAQs

What if i don’t have appropriate attire.

If you find yourself without appropriate attire for a specific dress code, don’t panic. Most cruise ships offer onboard shops where you can purchase clothing items suitable for the desired dress code. Alternatively, you can inquire with the cruise ship’s staff to see if they can provide any assistance or suggestions.

Can I wear jeans to dinner?

Jeans can generally be worn for casual and informal dining. However, it’s important to check the specific dress code requirements for each dining venue onboard your cruise ship. Some specialty restaurants or formal dining nights may have restrictions on wearing jeans. It’s always best to err on the side of caution and dress slightly more formal if in doubt.

Can I wear flip-flops to dinner?

Flip-flops are generally not considered appropriate for dinner attire, especially for formal or semi-formal nights. However, for casual dining or poolside dining during the day, flip-flops can be a comfortable and acceptable choice. Just remember to check the dress code requirements for each dining venue to ensure you are appropriately dressed.

Dining aboard a cruise ship offers a variety of dress codes to suit every occasion and ambiance. From casual to formal, each dress code provides a unique experience, allowing you to express your personal style while enjoying delicious cuisine and memorable dining moments. By understanding and adhering to the dress codes and dining etiquette, you can make the most of your cruise dining experience and ensure a pleasant time for yourself and your fellow cruisers. So pack your bags, embrace the different dress codes, and get ready to indulge in a culinary journey like no other. Bon appétit!

What to Wear on a Cruise

By Carnival Cruise Line

Deciding what to wear on a cruise means considering many different factors: your cruise destinations and their climates, the activities you’re going to pursue onboard and on shore and your opportunities for formal dining. Deciding what to wear on a cruise to Alaska will of course be quite different to picking out what to wear on a cruise to the Caribbean .

Packing for days of beachgoing and shopping will call for different outfits for adventures like horseback riding, ziplining and ATV tours.

It’s most important that your cruise outfits are comfortable. Remember, there’s only so much room in your suitcase and stateroom , yet you’ll need enough clothing to take you from arrival to departure and every excursion in between.

Take your time and put some thought into packing for a Carnival Cruise and you’ll be ready to dress perfectly for every cruise occasion.

What to Wear: Warm Destinations

Wondering what to wear on a cruise to the Caribbean, The Bahamas or another warm destination? Packing for a cruise somewhere hot and sunny is relatively easy, and the good news is that warm-weather clothing tends to take up much less room in your suitcase.

It’s still a good idea to pack items of clothing that are versatile, for example sundresses or shorts that can take you from the beach to dinner, or shorts that work for both hiking and hanging out on deck. We suggest you pack the following:

  • At least two or three swimsuits – most passengers cruising to a warm destination spend lots of time in the pool or ocean. With multiple swimsuits you’ll never need to wear one that’s still wet.
  • Shorts – several pairs in a few different styles
  • Short-sleeved shirts, T-shirts, tank tops and/or blouses
  • One or two sundresses or skirt-and-top outfits for women
  • Several swimsuit cover-ups e.g., a cotton sundress or caftan
  • A light outer layer in case of cooler evenings e.g., a pashmina, thin cardigan or light jacket
  • Sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats
  • Water shoes or non-slip boat shoes with traction
  • A lightweight, packable waterproof jacket in case of rain

Packing for Warm Destination Excursions

Some excursions in warm-weather destinations require extra items in your suitcase . Sturdy, comfortable hiking or athletic shoes are obviously needed for hiking excursions, such as the Scenic Coastal Hike in St. Maarten or the Hop-on, Hop-off trolley tour in Key West . Also know that closed-toe shoes are mandatory for zip-lining and most horseback riding, ATV and bike tours. Check for these kinds of requirements before you set sail.

Sturdy water shoes are great for activities that take you from land to water, such as the Rainforest and Waterfall Hiking Adventure in Maui , excursions to the world-famous Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios, Jamaica and any other adventures.

family paddleboarding in the caribbean

What to Wear: Cold Destinations

If you’re cruising to a destination with a cold climate, such as Alaska or parts of Europe , it’s important to pack clothing that will keep you warm on the ship as well as on shore. Even if you’re cruising to Alaska in the middle of summer, expect temperatures to range from the mid-50s to mid-60s (degrees Fahrenheit) during the day.

Of course it’s colder at night, and during the earlier and later times in the cruise season. Rain is always a possibility too.

When packing outfits for a cruise to a colder destination , plan to dress in layers to help you    adapt to changing temperatures from day to night, as well as on and off the water. We recommend the following items:

  • Long pants in several styles e.g., jeans, khakis, fleece-lined leggings, cargo pants
  • Shorts for warmer days
  • Sweatshirts in a few different styles and weights
  • T-shirts, both long- and short-sleeved
  • Thick wool socks and thinner socks
  • A lightweight, packable rain jacket
  • Swimsuits for the sauna or spa
  • Workout gear if you plan to hit the gym. (A tip: Bring workout clothes that double as everyday wear.)
  • Comfortable walking shoes e.g., sneakers, hiking shoes, plus sandals for warmer days on board

Packing for Alaskan Excursions

Many shore excursions available on Alaskan cruises require some additional clothing items, especially outdoor adventures. Do some research on the excursions you’re considering and make sure you have the appropriate footwear and clothing to stay safe and comfortable.

Double up on the warm layers and include a heavier jacket or coat if you’re planning an excursion out on the water, such as the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour or the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Explorer . Also add a warm hat, scarf and gloves to your packing list. These items are essential as well for glacier excursions like Dog Sledding on Mendenhall Glacier via Helicopter .

If you’re going hiking, biking or ATV riding, especially in a rainforest or glacial region, don’t forget a rain jacket with a hood and comfortable, waterproof hiking boots or shoes.

Clothes for Special Occasions

Cruise ships have a wide variety of restaurants onboard , and some of our restaurants enforce dress codes. Be sure to include at least one outfit that fits every requirement so that you can enjoy any restaurant you desire. At any restaurant and any time of day, you at least need to cover up your swimsuit and wear water shoes .

Avoid having to go back to your stateroom to change between pool and restaurant by bringing along cover-ups like sundresses or shorts and T-shirts.

In the evenings, some of our ships enforce a “cruise casual” dress code. For men this dress code can call for longer dress shorts or pants (jeans are OK too) and a collared polo shirt. For women, the dress code may ask for sundresses, skirts and blouses, dress shorts and capri pants are acceptable.

Don’t wear sleeveless shirts (for men), cut-off jeans, T-shirts or gym shorts.

If you want to attend a “cruise elegant” evening, bring a fancier, more formal outfit. Men can wear suits or dress slacks with a sport coat and dress shirt. For women, cocktail dresses, pantsuits or elegant skirts and blouses are appropriate. Some guests like to go all out with a tuxedo or ball gown.

Ready to Pack Your Bags?

When packing for a cruise, it’s important to dress for the occasion. The great thing about cruising is that so many different “occasions” are packed in to one vacation, from formal dining to snorkeling and sipping cool drinks by the pool or trekking through a rainforest .

Spend some time planning your outfits and we’re sure you’ll find room in your suitcase for everything you need. Remember to save a little space for souvenirs !

Note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining options may vary by  ship  and destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Onboard Dress Code FAQs
  • FAQs Overview

What is the onboard dress code?

Whatever the itinerary, destination, or occasion—when you pack, think casual chic.

DURING THE DAY

For warmer climates, pack swimsuits and cover-ups, walking shorts and shirts that protect from the sun, lightweight slacks, skirts or sundress, and a light sweater or jacket. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are always encouraged.

For cooler climates, bring clothing with long sleeves, sweaters, and pants that can be layered. In areas prone to snow or rain, waterproof jackets, hats, gloves, and umbrellas are recommended.

Around the globe, consider appropriate shoes and gear for the excursions you have planned and the terrain you’ll encounter. For instance, you may pack water shoes if hiking a waterfall or a headscarf or conservative dress for visiting museums, mosques, temples, and churches.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. Make sure you bring active wear and sneakers if you plan to hit the gym!

Poolside, bathing suits with coverups, T-shirts, tanks, hats, and sunglasses are welcomed.

In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

SMART CASUAL

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jean, and stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.

EVENING CHIC

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jean, an elegant dress top or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. The Daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and theater.

Lauren Sánchez turns heads in racy corset dress at White House state dinner with Jeff Bezos

Date night at the White House!

Lauren Sánchez waltzed into 1600 Penn. Ave with her fiancé Jeff Bezos in hand — but it was her racy corset dress that turned heads at Wednesday’s lavish state dinner.

The former journalist, 54, rocked a red gown that featured a plunging neckline adorned with lace.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez arrive for an official State Dinner at the White House.

The off-the-shoulder Rasario dress ($2,200) also featured corset-like boning and a floor-length silk skirt.

She completed her risqué ensemble with a pair of Gianvito Rossi Flavia mirrored leather pumps ($1,200).

Sánchez let her hair flow behind her ears, revealing her huge diamond earrings. She topped off her look with a sparkly clutch.

The philanthropist’s outfit was far riskier than what guests typically wear to a White House state dinner, where guests often opt for formal, buttoned-up outfits.

For his part, the billionaire Amazon founder and Washington Post owner opted for a black tuxedo paired with a silk bowtie atop a crisp white shirt.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez smile as they arrive at the White House.

Sánchez and Bezos, 60, rubbed elbows with a handful of famous faces and important figures.

The black-tie event honored Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife, Yuko as President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden served as hosts.

Legendary actor Robert De Niro and his girlfriend Tiffany Chen were also in attendance, as well as Apple CEO Tim Cook, VP Lisa Jackson, and Japanese American Olympic medalists Kristi Yamaguchi and Alex and Maia Shibutani.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez arrive for an official State Dinner at the White House.

Upon arrival, attendees were welcomed in the White House East Room, where more than 200 guests dined on house-cured salmon and dry-aged rib-eye steak.

JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, spotted with wine glass in hand ahead of Biden and Kishida giving introductory toasts, were also toward the center of the room.

“We both remember the choices that were made to forge a friendship,” Biden, 81, said during his toast. “We both remember the hard work, what it has done to find healing.”

Jeff Bezos laughs during the White House state dinner.

“Tonight,” the president continued, “We pledge to keep going.”

Paul Simon, 82, provided the evening’s entertainment in the State Dining Room — beginning shortly after 10 p.m. with the songs “Graceland” and “Slip Slidin’ Away.”

The former Simon & Garfunkel singer is said to be a favorite of the First Lady’s.

What to Wear on a Cruise: Daytime, Formal Nights & More

W hen it comes to cruising in style, packing the right attire for every occasion is essential.

Evening: After 5:30 p.m., attire ranges from "cruise casual" to "cruise elegant."

Themed Nights:

Voyages lasting seven nights host at least two Gala Evenings, during which guests are requested to adhere to a more formal dress code.
  • Themed Nights: Gala Evenings employ themes ranging from specific colors (such as black and white or red and gold outfits) to the roaring '20s to masquerade balls.
