What's covered by hsbc complimentary international travel insurance, what do i need to do to use hsbc's credit card international travel insurance, pre-existing medical conditions, how to make a claim through your hsbc credit card complimentary international travel insurance policy, other types of hsbc complimentary credit card travel insurance, hsbc credit card complimentary insurance for shopping, other hsbc cards with complimentary insurance options, frequently asked questions.

HSBC offers complimentary insurance across its range of credit cards, including domestic and international travel insurance on HSBC Platinum and World Mastercard credit cards. The actual policies are underwritten by Allianz Insurance Australia (Allianz) and can be different based on the HSBC credit card you choose.

Like any insurance policy, there are terms and conditions you need to meet to get the cover and have your claims approved. The insurance policy booklet has complete details, so it's always good to keep that handy. But if you just want a quick guide of the cover you'll get, including what's available in a pandemic, we've got the key details here.

Have a question or need to make a claim right now? Call Allianz Insurance on 1800 648 093 (from Australia) or +617 3305 7499 (from overseas).

HSBC offers complimentary travel insurance to people with platinum and World Mastercard credit cards, as well as other types of insurance on other cards. Here are the key details for HSBC cards currently on the market.

Have an HSBC credit card that's not on this list? Check the terms and conditions available on the HSBC website to see if your card is eligible.

HSBC credit card travel insurance can give you cover for overseas trips of up to 4 months if you need to go to hospital overseas, miss flights because of delays, have your luggage stolen and for other situations that can leave you out of pocket.

The actual cover is broken down into "benefits" based on what you can and can't claim. Some claims also have an excess you need to pay before you'll get any money if a claim is approved.

Does HSBC complimentary credit card travel insurance cover pandemics?

Yes, some cover is available for COVID-19 and other pandemics or epidemics, including for cancellation and overseas emergency medical claims. There are very specific conditions you need to meet to make a claim, so it’s important to read the HSBC complimentary insurance policy document or call Allianz on 1800 648 093.

If you want more details about COVID-19 travel insurance, Finder also has a whole guide covering questions about pandemic and travel insurance .

Here, we've broken down the different types of claims, with an example of a situation when you might use the cover. But remember: You should always read the insurance policy booklet for complete details of the cover.

Medical, dental and emergencies cover with an HSBC credit card

Hsbc complimentary international travel insurance for cancellation, delays, accommodation and transport, luggage and personal items cover offered with hsbc credit card complimentary insurance, personal liability cover offered with hsbc complimentary credit card travel insurance, hsbc credit card complimentary international travel insurance for death and funerals, what's not covered.

Every insurance policy has details of when you will and won't get cover. These details can be very specific, which is why it is important to always check your insurance policy documents.

  • Pre-existing medical conditions (unless you have got written confirmation from Allianz that your condition will be covered before you leave)
  • Issues related to drinking alcohol or taking non-prescription drugs
  • If you don't follow advice from any government, official body or mass media announcements
  • Travel that's for the purpose of medical treatment
  • If you're a crew member or pilot working on any of the transport
  • Dangerous activities including rock climbing (with equipment), white water rafting, bungy jumping, off-piste snowboarding or skiing and quad or motorbike riding on a vehicle that has an engine capacity of 200cc or more

If you need cover for a skiing trip, bungy jumping or other overseas adventures, check out adventure sport travel insurance costs and conditions. Got a pre-existing health condition? Check out travel insurance policies that offer cover for conditions including asthma, high blood pressure and physical disabilities.

If you're planning a trip and want cover through your HSBC credit card, you'll need to meet the following requirements:

  • Travel bookings. You need to use your eligible HSBC credit card to pay for at least $500 of your travel costs before the start of the trip. A simple way to meet this requirement is to pay for your airfares, cruise or hotel stays with the card. You also need a return ticket before you go.
  • Australian residency. You need to permanently live in Australia.

Does HSBC credit card travel insurance cover family members?

Yes, if you meet the eligibility requirements for cover on an upcoming trip, your spouse and dependants (children) can get cover under this policy when they're travelling with you for at least half of your trip and meet the following requirements:

  • They need to permanently live in Australia.
  • At least $500 of their pre-paid travel costs have been paid for with your eligible HSBC credit card and they have a return ticket to Australia.
  • They need to be travelling with you for at least 50% of your trip.

They also need to meet all the other conditions of the insurance policy.

Need written confirmation of cover? Call Allianz on 1800 648 093.

This complimentary international travel insurance doesn't typically cover pre-existing medical conditions.

In simple terms, that means you won't get cover if you've seen a doctor or other qualified professional about a condition that causes issues overseas. It's the same if you're aware of a physical, medical, mental or dental condition before you travel.

There are some exceptions if you're pregnant, though:

  • You can get cover for pregnancy complications that arise from injury or sickness when you're travelling and meet the other eligibility requirements.
  • If you were eligible for the travel insurance before you became pregnant, you'll be entitled to available cover.

If you have a pre-existing condition you want covered, follow these steps:

  • Call Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 648 093. You'll then go through an assessment process.
  • Answer all the questions honestly and give them any extra information they ask for.

If your pre-existing medical condition is approved for cover, you will need to pay an administration fee. This fee is non-refundable and the cost is not detailed in the insurance policy booklet, so make sure you ask how much it will be when you call Allianz.

If you follow these steps and get approved, Allianz will send you written confirmation of cover for your pre-existing medical condition.

Pre-existing medical condition definition for HSBC credit card insurance

As well as the summary above, we have included the definition that's in the current HSBC card insurance policy document for HSBC Platinum Cards and Premier World Mastercard accounts.

These are effective from 14 October 2022.

a condition of which a reasonable person in the circumstances, should have been aware at the time eligibility for the cover available was met, including:

  • Any dental condition; or
  • Any physical condition; or
  • Pregnancy; or
  • Any lifelong illness; or
  • Any chronic illness; or
  • Any mental illness; or
  • Any current or previously treated cancer, or

Any condition which, in the last two years:

  • Was treated by surgery (including day surgery); or
  • Required regular medication; or
  • Required on-going treatment; or
  • Was referred to a specialist medical adviser; or
  • Had regular reviews or check-ups; or
  • Caused admission to hospital; or
  • Was treated at a hospital emergency department or out-patient clinic.

If you think you will need to make a claim, contact Allianz Global Assistance as soon as possible so that they can give you specific information.

You can do this by calling +617 3305 7499 from overseas (a reverse charge number) or 1800 648 093 in Australia.

There are 2 main ways you can submit your claim:

Allianz will review your claim and ask for any further details before giving you an outcome.

What to include in your claim

With insurance claims, it's always good to include as much detail and supporting documentation as possible. It makes it easier for the insurer to look at the claim and your eligibility for a payout.

  • A referral or letter from a doctor or other professional you see in relation to a claim
  • Official medical reports
  • Police reports
  • Photos of damaged items
  • Emails or letters from airlines that relate to a claim
  • Receipts or other proof of purchase

Transit accident insurance

  • What is it? Cover for accidents that happen when you're travelling overseas on a plane, train, cruise ship, bus or other eligible vehicle. You also get cover for related accidents that happen when you're boarding or leaving the transport.
  • When can I use it? You are eligible for cover if you have paid for the entire trip with your eligible HSBC credit card before you leave. If your partner or dependants are permanent residents of Australia and travelling with you, they'll also get cover.
  • Is there an excess cost? No, you don't need to pay an excess for any claims but there are limits to how much you can get paid out. For example, the loss of one hand or one foot has a maximum benefit limit of $100,000 for the cardholder, $50,000 for a spouse and $12,000 for a dependant.

Domestic travel insurance

  • What is it? Cover for specific issues that come up when you're travelling to a different state or territory in Australia for up to 14 days. This can include costs relating to cancelled return flights, flight delays of 4 hours or more, delayed or lost luggage and rental vehicle excess insurance costs if you hire a vehicle.
  • When can I use it? If you have used your eligible HSBC credit card to pay for the entire flight or at least $250 of your flights and accommodation before you leave. If your partner or dependants are travelling with you for at least 50% of the trip and meet these requirements, they'll also get cover.
  • Is there an excess cost? Yes, $200 per claim for cover relating to cancellation or luggage.

Rental vehicle excess insurance in Australia

  • What is it? Cover for damage or theft of a car or other vehicle you have hired in Australia, up to a maximum of $6,000.
  • When can I use it? You are eligible for cover if you have paid for the hire car (or vehicle) using your eligible HSBC credit card. The vehicle hire agreement also has to include details of how much you need to pay if the vehicle is damaged or stolen.
  • Is there an excess cost? Yes, $200 per claim.

HSBC credit cards give you access to other types of insurance, also provided by Allianz. Below is a snapshot of the different types.

Purchase protection insurance

  • What is it? Cover for the cost of a new item that is stolen, accidentally damaged or lost. It covers most household and personal items such as laptops, shoes, jewellery and glasses. Exclusions include second-hand items, perishables, cash, computer software, vehicles and items you've accidentally left in a hotel after checking out.
  • When can I use it? If you use your eligible HSBC credit card to pay for covered items, this insurance will apply for the first 90 days from when you get them. This cover is available for personal items bought anywhere in the world, and for gifts you have bought and given to someone who is a permanent Australian resident.
  • How can I make a claim? You need to show proof that you own the item and report the loss, theft or damage to the local police or relevant authorities (such as the office of a transport company). You also need to show proof of the report, such as written confirmation for the authorities involved. Then, call Allianz on 1800 648 093.
  • Is there an excess cost? Yes, $100 per claim. There are also maximum claim amounts depending on the item.

Extended warranty insurance

  • What is it? Cover that doubles the manufacturer's warranty for items bought in Australia, up to a maximum period of 12 months. For example, if you bought a laptop with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty and it stopped working for no reason after 12 months, you could make a claim under this cover.
  • When can I use it? If you used your eligible HSBC credit card to pay for an item and it came with an Australian manufacturer's warranty of between 7 days and 5 years. You can make a claim if something happens after the original warranty period has ended.
  • How can I make a claim? Call Allianz on 1800 648 093 and give them as much information as possible.
  • Is there an excess cost? Yes, $200 per claim. There is a total maximum claim limit of $10,000 per year.

woman holding phone and credit card which gives her travel insurance

One of the biggest perks of having a rewards card or travel credit card in your pocket is the potential for complimentary travel insurance .

While it’s a great freebie to have, the fine print on credit card travel insurance can really get you. There’s nothing worse than discovering mid-trip that you aren't adequately covered.

To ensure your travel insurance is activated before you head overseas, we’ve rounded up the major Australian credit card providers who offer complimentary travel cover for their credit cards , as well as how to activate the included travel insurance.

NOTE: Before signing up for a new card, always read the terms and conditions and get across what's covered. Most included travel insurance will exclude pre-existing conditions, and may not cover for additional activities like cruise cover or snow sports.

Credit Card Providers

American express, commonwealth bank.

Underwritten by: Chubb

Eligible American Express Credit Cards :

  • Qantas American Express Ultimate Credit Card
  • Qantas American Express Premium Credit Card
  • American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card
  • American Express Velocity Platinum Credit Card
  • American Express Explorer Credit Card

How to activate: Your travel insurance cover starts when you:

  • Buy a return ticket from Australia.
  • INTERNATIONAL:  Pay for the full fare of that ticket with your American Express card or corresponding membership points.
  • DOMESTIC:  Spend at least $500 on accommodation or the full transport fare for domestic trips on your American Express card or with corresponding membership points.
  • You must be a resident of Australia, a current American Express card holder (or their spouse or dependent), and are 79 or younger at the time of purchase.

What prepaid travel costs count? This one is very specific - only the full fare of your return trip counts towards activating your travel insurance cover, including flights and cruises. For domestic trips, you will need to either spend the entire cost of your return fare (bus, train, flight, cruise, etc) or at least $500 in domestic accommodation costs to activate your travel insurance cover.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? This will depend on the type of card you have, as certain cards will cover your spouse and dependents under the age of 22.

Underwritten by: Insurance provided by Zurich Australian Insurance Limited through its agent Cover-More Insurance Services.

Eligible Commonwealth Bank Credit Cards:

  • Commonwealth Bank Smart Awards Credit Card
  • Commonwealth Bank Ultimate Awards Credit Card

How to activate: Activate cover with the press of a button via NetBank, the CommBank app, or directly with Cover-More.

What prepaid travel costs count? Cover is automatically activated for 12 months from when you make the booking for your trip. However, if you're trying to activate mid-trip keep in mind a three day waiting period applies.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Yes, your spouse and up to ten children are covered as long as they are travelling with you (the cardholder) for the duration of the trip.

Eligible NAB Credit Cards :

  • NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Credit Card
  • NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Credit Card
  • NAB Rewards Signature Credit Card
  • NAB Rewards Platinum Credit Card
  • NAB Low Fee Platinum Card

How to activate: NAB have range of travel insurance plans on their credit cards and each one is activated in a slightly different way. For your overseas travel insurance plan, you need to:

  • Have an eligible card.
  • Have a return trip booked from Australia.
  • Before leaving Australia, spend $500 on your prepaid travel costs on the eligible NAB credit card.
  • Be an Australian resident and under 91 years of age at the time of departure.

What prepaid travel costs count? Your return flights or boat trip, transport, accommodation and tours DO count, but travellers cheques and foreign currency DON’T count (check T&Cs for further information). To qualify, you need to use your NAB card or card details to purchase these items – using the account linked to your debit card via BPay or PayPal won’t activate your travel insurance.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Yes, but they will also need a return ticket for the trip and a $500 spend each on prepaid travel costs, paid on your eligible card, and they will need to satisfy the relevant eligibility requirements.

Eligible Westpac Credit Cards :

  • Westpac Altitude Black Credit Card (available in Altitude Rewards, Velocity Frequent Flyer, and Qantas Frequent Flyer varieties)
  • Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card  (available in Altitude Rewards, Velocity Frequent Flyer, and Qantas Frequent Flyer varieties)

How to activate:  To activate travel insurance on your Westpac credit card, you'll need to have:

  • A return ticket to Australia booked before you leave
  • An eligible Westpac card
  • Paid for $500 of your prepaid travel costs with that card before leaving Australia

You must also be under 81 years old and an Australian resident.

What prepaid travel costs count? Your return flight, accommodation, other travel while you’re away and any tours that might be on your itinerary can be included in the $500 figure.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Yes, as long as they also have a return ticket and $500 of their travel costs have been paid on the Westpac credit card in question, and are travelling with the cardholder for at least 50% of their travel time.

Eligible ANZ Credit Cards :

  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum
  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Black
  • ANZ Rewards Platinum
  • ANZ Rewards Black
  • ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures
  • ANZ Platinum

How to activate: At $250, ANZ has one of the lowest thresholds for activation. To activate your ANZ travel insurance, all you need to do is:

  • Have one of the above eligible cards
  • Use it to purchase just $250 of your prepaid travel costs
  • Have a return flight from Australia
  • Be under 81 years old

What prepaid travel costs count? This can include flights, other transport, accommodation or tours for you and your spouse or dependent children. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use your reward points towards your $250 payment.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? As long as they are travelling with you, have a return ticket and $250 of their prepaid travel costs have been paid on your ANZ card.

Eligible Citi Credit Cards :

  • Citi Prestige Credit Card
  • Citi Premier Credit Card
  • Citi Rewards Credit Card

How to activate:  To get your insurance up and running, you’ll need to make sure:

  • Your overseas trip does not last more than 6 consecutive months.
  • Your travel ticket was purchased using an eligible Citi credit card or via the associated frequent flyer program.
  • If you're purchasing with frequent flyer points, you must spend a minimum of 15,000 points accrued on a Citi Card or through Citi Rewards over a 12 month period prior to buying your travel ticket.

What prepaid travel costs count? Only the cost of your overseas travel ticket is relevant to your travel insurance policy activation.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Yes, as long as they’ve met the same eligibility requirements as the cardholder, which means paying for their ticket using the eligible Citi credit card. They will also need to be travelling with you for at least 50% of the trip.

Eligible HSBC credit cards :

  • HSBC Platinum Qantas Credit Card
  • HSBC Platinum Credit Card
  • HSBC Premier World MasterCard
  • HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card

The HSBC Low Rate Credit Card does offer domestic travel insurance, but not international.

How to activate: There are two simple steps to activating travel insurance on an HSBC credit card, which are:

  • Have a return ticket for your trip
  • Spend at least $500 with your card on prepaid travel costs before you leave.

You will also need to be an Australian resident.

What prepaid travel costs count?  In the $500 you need to spend towards your trip, you can include your return tickets and prepaid accommodation costs.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Yes, but they need to activate their travel insurance in the same way you do. They’ll also have to be travelling with you for at least 50% of the trip.

Eligible St. George Credit Cards :

  • St. George Amplify Rewards Signature Credit Card
  • St. George Amplify Rewards Platinum Credit Card
  • St. George Amplify Qantas Signature Credit Card
  • St. George Amplify Qantas Platinum Credit Card

How to activate: To activate your St. George travel insurance cover, you’ll need to make sure:

  • You've bought a return ticket to Australia for your trip
  • You've paid $500 of your prepaid travel expenses with your eligible St. George card
  • You're under 81 years old and an Australian resident

What prepaid travel costs count? Accommodation, flights, other travel, and tours can all contribute to the $500 required to activate your included travel insurance.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Your spouse and any dependents are covered as long as they are travelling with you at least 50% of the time and meet the criteria of having a return ticket, $500 of their prepaid travel expenses paid on your card, and are under 81 years old.

Underwritten by: Cover-More

Eligible Bankwest Credit Cards :

  • Bankwest Qantas World Mastercard
  • Bankwest Qantas Platinum Mastercard
  • Bankwest More Platinum Mastercard
  • Bankwest More World Mastercard
  • Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard
  • Bankwest Breeze Platinum Mastercard

How to activate: You’ll be automatically covered as long as you hold one of the eligible Bankwest cards. Keep in mind if you're over 80 years old you won't have access to complimentary medical cover.

What prepaid travel costs count? There are no minimum prepaid travel costs required to activate your cover. You can see your complimentary cover through either the Cover-more or Bankwest apps. This policy only covers the basics. You do have the option to upgrade to a more comprehensive cover for an added premium.

Are my spouse and dependants covered? Yes! Once you are eligible, they are too, as long as they’re travelling with you for the duration of the trip.

People walk across a pink map of Europe.

Don’t forget these important rules!

Our mantra here at Mozo may as well be, “Always read the product disclosure statement ”, as this will tell you what the inclusions/exclusions are of your chosen policy.

Here are some things to keep in mind about your travel insurance policy if you activate it through your credit card:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions aren’t covered under most of these policies. If you’re travelling with a pre-existing medical condition, you might have to think about purchasing a standalone policy that suits your needs.
  • Unless it's specified (like with Amex or HSBC) you don’t NEED to pay for your return ticket with your credit card to be eligible, but it’s a good way to spend a chunk of the required amount.
  • The period of cover generally ranges from 3-6 months, but it’s important to check your particular policy.
  • Most of the time, there’s no need to tell your bank that you’re travelling - your cover is automatically applied once you meet the eligibility requirements. It might be helpful anyway, to prevent foreign charges being flagged as fraudulent!
  • For spouses or dependent children to be covered, they usually need to be travelling with the card holder for the duration of the trip. Check your policy for an exact definition of who qualifies as a dependent, because the age limit sometimes changes from policy to policy. (Otherwise, check out our guide to family travel insurance ).
  • A lot of these travel insurance policies have age limits, usually up to 80 years of age. If you or someone you’re travelling with needs seniors' coverage, take a look at our handy seniors guide.

Key benefits of travel medical insurance

Choosing the right travel medical insurance

  • Travel medical insurance covers unexpected emergency medical expenses while traveling.
  • Travelers off to foreign countries or remote areas should strongly consider travel medical insurance.
  • If you have to use your travel medical insurance, keep all documents related to your treatment.

Of all the delights associated with travel to far-flung locales, getting sick or injured while away from home is low on the savvy traveler's list. Beyond gut-wrenching anxiety, seeking medical treatment in a foreign country can be exceedingly inconvenient and expensive.

The peace of mind that comes with travel insurance for the many things that could ail you while abroad is priceless. As options for travel-related insurance abound, it's essential to research, read the fine print, and act according to the specifics of your itinerary, pocketbook, and other needs.

Travel insurance reimburses you for any unexpected medical expenses incurred while traveling. On domestic trips, travel medical insurance usually take a backseat to your health insurance. However, when traveling to a foreign country, where your primary health insurance can't cover you, travel medical insurance takes the wheel. This can be especially helpful in countries with high medical care costs, such as Scandinavian countries.

Emergency medical evacuation insurance

Another benefit that often comes with travel medical insurance, emergency medical evacuation insurance covers you for any costs to transport you to an adequately equipped medical center. Emergency medical evacuation insurance is often paired with repatriation insurance, which covers costs associated with returning your remains to your home country if the worst happens.

These benefits are for worst-case scenarios, but they might be more necessary depending on the type of trips you take. Emergency medical evacuation insurance is helpful if you're planning on traveling to a remote location or if you're traveling on a cruise as sea to land evacuations can be costly. Some of the best travel insurance companies also offer non-medical evacuations as part of an adventure sports insurance package.

It's also worth mentioning that emergency medical evacuation insurance is required for international students studying in the US on a J Visa.

The exact terms of your coverage will vary depending on your insurer, but you can expect most travel medical insurance policies to offer the following coverages.

  • Hospital room and board
  • Inpatient/outpatient hospital services
  • Prescription Drugs
  • COVID-19 treatment
  • Emergency room services
  • Urgent care visits
  • Local ambulance
  • Acute onset of pre-existing conditions
  • Dental coverage (accident/sudden relief of pain)
  • Medical care due to terrorist attack
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Repatriation of mortal remains
  • Accidental death and dismemberment

Travel medical insurance and pre-existing conditions

Many travel insurance providers will cover pre-existing conditions as long as certain conditions are met. For one, travelers need to purchase their travel insurance within a certain time frame from when they placed a deposit on their trip, usually two to three weeks.

Additionally, travel insurance companies usually only cover stable medical conditions, which are conditions that don't need additional medical treatment, diagnosis, or medications.

Who needs travel medical insurance?

Even the best-laid travel plans can go awry. As such, it pays to consider your potential healthcare needs before taking off, even if you are generally healthy. Even if well-managed, preexisting conditions like diabetes or asthma can make a medical backup plan even more vital.

Having what you need to refill prescriptions or get other care if you get stuck somewhere other than home could be essential to your health and well-being. That's without counting all the accidents and illnesses that can hit us when away from home.

Individuals traveling for extended periods (more than six months) or engaging in high-risk activities (think scuba diving or parasailing) should also consider a solid medical travel plan. Both scenarios increase the likelihood that medical attention, whether routine or emergency, could be needed.

In the case of travel via the friendly seas, it's also worth considering cruise trip medical travel insurance . Routine care will be available onboard. But anything beyond that will require transportation to the nearest land mass (and could quickly become extremely expensive, especially if you're in another country).

Like other types of insurance, medical travel insurance rates are calculated based on various factors. Failing to disclose a preexisting health condition could result in a lapse of coverage right when you need it, as insurers can cancel your policy if you withhold material information. So honesty is always the best policy.

Even the best-laid travel plans can go awry. As such, it pays to consider your potential healthcare needs before taking off, even if you are generally healthy. Making the right choice when shopping for travel medical insurance can mean the difference between a minor hiccup in your travels and a financial nightmare.

When a travel insurance company comes up with a quote for your policy, they take a few factors into consideration, such as your age, your destination, and the duration of your trip. You should do the same when assessing a travel insurance company.

For example, older travelers who are more susceptible to injury may benefit from travel medical insurance (though your premiums will be higher). If you're traveling for extended periods throughout one calendar year, you should look into an annual travel medical insurance plan . If you're engaging in high-risk activities (think scuba diving or parasailing), you should seek a plan that includes coverage for injuries sustained in adventure sports.

Travel medical insurance isn't just for peace of mind. If you travel often enough, there's a good chance you'll eventually experience an incident where medical treatment is necessary.

Before you submit your claim, you should take some time to understand your policy. Your travel medical insurance is either primary (you can submit claims directly to your travel medical insurance provider) or secondary (you must first submit claims to your primary insurance provider). In the case of secondary travel medical insurance, a refusal notice from your primary insurance provider, even if it does not cover medical claims outside the US, is often required as evidence of protocol.

On that note, you should be sure to document every step of your medical treatment. You should keep any receipts for filled prescriptions, hospital bills, and anything else documenting your medical emergency.

As many people have found out the hard way, reading the fine print is vital. Most travel insurance policies will reimburse your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if you fall ill with a severe condition, including illnesses like COVID-19.

Still on the fence about whether or not medical travel insurance is worth it ? It's worth noting that many travel insurance plans also include medical protections, so you can also protect against trip cancellations and other unexpected developments while obtaining travel medical insurance.

While short, domestic trips may not warrant travel medical insurance, it may be a good idea to insure longer, international trips. You should also consider travel medical insurance for trips to remote areas, where a medical evacuation may be expensive, and more physically tasking trips.

While shopping for travel medical insurance may not be fun, a little advance leg work can let you relax on your trip and give you peace of mind. After all, that is the point of a vacation.

Medical travel insurance frequently asked questions

Trip insurance covers any unexpected financial losses while traveling, such as the cost of replacing lost luggage, trip interruptions, and unexpected medical expenses. Travel medical insurance just covers those medical expenses without the trip interruption or cancellation insurance.

Travel insurance companies usually offer adventure sports as add-on coverage or a separate plan entirely. You'll likely pay more for a policy with adventure sports coverage.

Many travel medical insurance policies now include coverage for COVID-19 related medical expenses and treat it like any other illness. However, you should double-check your policy to ensure that is the case.

How HSBC Transformed Its Customer Experience

Sponsor content from HSBC.

how to activate hsbc travel insurance

In every sector, technological advances are raising customers’ expectations regarding how they should be able to interact with brands.

The banking and finance sector, which has long emphasized product strategy over customer experience (CX), is facing increasing pressure from brick-and-mortar, online, and fintech competition. This makes it critical for brands in the industry—especially well-established ones with a heavy reliance on a human touch—to deliver CX that gives customers what they truly want and need.

Millennial and Gen Z bank customers in particular are demanding frictionless CX that mirrors non-financial digital CX—such as their interactions with retail, travel, and entertainment brands—and helps them live their lives with more convenience.

Two-thirds of Hong Kong Millennials in a recent HSBC survey rated seamless integration of their banking services as “extremely” or “very” important. Attracting these consumers and encouraging them to expand their relationships with the bank require a strengthened focus on building CX that helps people integrate and navigate their financial lives.

A seamless banking experience benefits all customers, so every bank needs a CX roadmap that outlines customers’ diverse visions, priorities, and needs at every life stage in order to offer consistent and personalized experiences and build brand loyalty.

HSBC Hong Kong’s customer-centric approach to building a better CX, both online and offline, relies on a framework built around a customer experience model (CEM) and customer lifecycle management (CLCM).

Elevating Customer Experience with Customer Experience Model and Customer Lifecycle Management

To gain an in-depth understanding of customer pain points, HSBC builds a CEM by conducting Net Promoter Score (NPS) surveys at various touchpoints and channels. Using an automated Voice of the Customer engine, the CEM can derive customer insights from raw data, enabling HSBC to address negative CX promptly.

HSBC applies the survey results to its Customer Forum, a governance and discussion platform in which all departments can review initiatives through the customer lens to help the bank prioritize the journey improvements that matter most to customers.

The implementation of this “NPS ecosystem” has revolutionized the bank’s culture by placing customer-centricity at the core of its business strategy for the first time and embedding NPS into the scorecards of every staffer.

The CLCM framework applies a centralized, data-led approach to improve customer engagement by analyzing a massive volume of data points from transactional and non-transactional behaviors and integrating predictive capabilities to give users a seamless, tailored CX.

CLCM has transformed the way HSBC interacts with its customers by ensuring that the bank can identify and meet their banking needs in real time. Also, the interplay between CEM-generated insights and CLCM-prescribed actions results in a regular, systematic progression of customer engagement as well as improved products and services and more-effective lifecycle management.

Turning Customer Insight into Action

To enrich CX across four lifecycle stages—acquisition, activation, relationship-deepening, and retention—HSBC employs machine learning (ML) and real-time computing to analyze 1.3 million customer behavior signals every day, including transactions, card use, digital footprints, and app signals. These insights help HSBC generate customer profiles and inform its strategic response.

Real-time artificial intelligence (AI)–driven findings also help the CLCM framework improve customers’ financial well-being and move them closer to achieve their wealth goals through automated, customized onboarding and relationship-building communications.

HSBC turns such insights into action by creating products and offers that cater to individual needs and changing trends. CLCM tracks customer input and activities in real time with robust data-analytics capabilities that help the bank further evaluate and refine its customer engagement.

Insights from the CEM have shown that the end-to-end banking experience matters more to customers than product features. It has also revealed that customers prefer digital-first interactions to branch visits, with 90% of respondents saying digital is key to their experience. As a result, HSBC has committed more resources toward improving its digital capabilities for a true “bank in your pocket” experience.

The Digital Account Opening Journey

HSBC Hong Kong has used insights from its CEM and CLCM platforms to transform its digital account-opening process for customers. Streamlining the process is one key area of CX improvement.

NPS surveys showed that customers felt the account-opening process was overly long and complex, requiring in-person branch visits and paper documents—critical pain points that led HSBC to reshape and simplify its account-opening process from a 45-minute, in-person procedure at a bank branch into a five-minute process available 24/7 on mobile devices. The change set the industry standard upon its introduction in 2021.

In response to customer demand for easier application procedures, HSBC also integrated its credit card application and investment account–opening processes into the same journey, giving most customers the instant ability to save, spend, and invest in one go within just 12 minutes.

Recognizing that new customers have diverse interests and needs, HSBC also developed 60 automated and personalized messaging modules explaining account features and dedicated offers over the course of a customer’s first 90 days, all based on data-driven insights and customer behaviors.

In addition to the HSBC account welcome email, the messaging engine screens customers’ identities and detects their messaging preferences to provide additional onboarding modules tailored to their specific banking needs.

The elevated customer experience resulted in 20% more new customers choosing HSBC as their primary bank. As of 2023, eight out of 10 Hong Kong Millennials bank with HSBC, a testament to the bank’s emphasis on customer experience.

A New Banking Experience

Following four years of transforming its customer experience through the CEM and CLCM, HSBC achieved a record-high, market-leading NPS score for the second consecutive year in 2023, indicating that customers prefer HSBC to other banks and are more willing to recommend it to their friends and families.

“CLCM is at the heart of our customer experience promise and aims to bring the best personalized customer engagement at the right time and right place, empowered by the technology, data, and analytics,” says Maggie Ng, HSBC’s head of wealth and personal banking for Hong Kong.
