In the Catskills, passengers can take a moderate hike for sweeping views of New York's Kaaterskill Falls, one of America's oldest tourist attractions. Spend time exploring Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site or sampling local cheeses and apples during a call on Hyde Park. Lean into the spooky season in Sleepy Hollow with a tour of the Gothic Lyndhurst Mansion or Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, the final resting place of Washington Irving, who penned the iconic short story.

Fall 2024 itineraries depart between late September and early November. Similar departure dates are available in 2025. Fares for the round-trip Hudson River Fall Foliage cruises start from $5,760 per person. Fares are all-inclusive and come with all meals, snacks, drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and gratuities. The cost also covers port charges and fees.

Oceania Cruises: Northern Europe cruises

If you've amassed a stockpile of vacation days, consider using them on an extended cruise through Northern Europe with Oceania Cruises .

The line offers an 18-night sailing to Reykjavik and a 23-night voyage to Copenhagen, both of which depart from New York City. Both sailings are aboard the 670-passenger Insignia, among Oceania's smaller ships. Insignia provides a relatively uncrowded atmosphere thanks to a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than on Oceania's larger vessels.

Additionally, the ship's smaller size means it can visit ports that larger ships can't access, providing a more intimate and immersive destination experience.

Port call excursions on the New York-to-Reykjavik itinerary include a visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia's Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, home to the world's largest collection of wooden artifacts from the Titanic. In Nuuk, Greenland, passengers can visit a local family and learn about their culture and customs. Stroll through botanical gardens or check out the world's northernmost 18-hole golf course in Akureyri, Iceland.

A Copenhagen sailing also calls at Halifax, Nuuk and Reykjavik. Additional ports include Torshavn, Denmark; Kristiansand, Norway; and Gothenburg, Sweden.

Rates for an 18-night New York-to-Reykjavik sailing that departs Aug. 6, 2025, start from $6,299 per person for an inside cabin. A 2024 itinerary for a 23-night New York-to-Copenhagen itinerary departs July 12, with rates starting from $8,199 per person for an inside cabin.

MSC Cruises: Eastern Caribbean cruises

MSC Cruises offers 10-night cruises aboard MSC Meraviglia, departing from Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood. The 5,655-passenger ship features a top-deck water park and a two-deck indoor promenade area with shops, restaurants and bars. Passengers who've booked a Yacht Club cabin have their own lounge, restaurant and pool area.

The Eastern Caribbean itinerary calls at ports in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands; and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

Port diversions include snorkeling pristine waters or jumping off waterfalls in the Dominican Republic; exploring Puerto Rico's El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System; and testing your bravery in St. Maarten on the Flying Dutchman, called the world's steepest zip line.

The 10-night sailing departs April 18, 2024, and Jan. 23, 2025. Cruise-only fares start from $599 per person and exclude taxes, fees and port expenses (which start from about $187 per person).

Celebrity Cruises: Bermuda cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers two seven-night Bermuda sailings from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, aboard Celebrity Eclipse or Celebrity Silhouette, both in the line's Solstice Class of ships.

Slightly smaller than Edge Class vessels, Solstice Class ships feature chic outdoor pool decks, expansive spas, casinos and a generous selection of onboard dining, including Murano, Celebrity's signature French restaurant.

Both sailings include two overnight stays in Bermuda, giving passengers plenty of time to take in Bermuda's attractions. The ship docks at the historic Royal Naval Dockyard at the island's West End, which is a hub for shops, local craft markets and restaurants. Elsewhere on the island, the 117-foot Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, one of only two cast-iron lighthouses still in existence, provides one of the best views in Bermuda. Of course, the island's pink sand beaches offer an idyllic setting for a relaxing day off the ship.

Several 2024 itineraries are available throughout the summer, beginning with a May 19 departure. For 2025, there are seven sailings beginning with a May 18 itinerary. Fares start from $548 per person for an inside cabin and exclude taxes, fees and port expenses (about $264 per person).

Silversea Cruises: New England and Canada cruises

For ultra-luxury afloat, consider one of Silversea Cruises ' 11-night sailings from New York City to Montreal aboard Silver Shadow. Carrying just 382 guests, this intimate all-suite ship is still large enough to offer multiple dining venues. Options include La Dame, with its French-inspired cuisine and exceptional wines, and La Terrazza, the place to go for authentic Italian dishes.

Other onboard diversions include a pool, a full-service spa, a fitness center and a casino. Additionally, all suites feature butlers who can do everything from unpacking your luggage to securing special requests.

A highlight of Silver Shadow's New England and Canada itinerary is an overnight in Quebec City so guests can go ashore for dining and entertainment. This itinerary also includes cruising Quebec's forest-lined Saguenay River and port calls at Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Montreal, where the voyage ends.

The 2025 New England and Canada sailing departs Sept. 2. All-inclusive fares start from $6,850 per person.

Cunard Line: Transatlantic cruises

Cunard 's 2,691-passenger Queen Mary 2 regularly plies the Atlantic Ocean between New York City and Southampton, England. This "crossing" voyage is a throwback of sorts to the "Golden Age of Cruising," when movie stars and political leaders traveled via liner across the ocean.

Today, it's a one-of-a-kind experience with modern amenities, elegant dining, ballroom dancing, a planetarium, a full-service spa, wine tasting, enrichment activities and special event cruises.

Opt for a seven-, an eight- or a nine-night eastbound transatlantic crossing, or choose a 14-night round-trip voyage. Savor uninterrupted sea days, enjoy live music, play shuffleboard, learn from guest lecturers or take in a 3D film in the largest planetarium at sea.

For 2024, choose from six itineraries that depart in May, June and October. Three itineraries are currently listed for 2025 in January, March and May. Fares for transatlantic cruises start from $988 per person, excluding taxes, fees and port expenses, which start from $75.45.

Norwegian Cruise Line: Mediterranean cruises

Want to explore Europe without the intense jet lag? With this Norwegian Cruise Line cruise starting in New York City, you can spend six days making your way slowly across the Atlantic before spending another 10 days exploring destinations in Spain, France and Italy.

The 16-night sailing takes place aboard Norwegian Escape, departing from New York City and ending in Rome.

Norwegian originated the idea of "freestyle cruising" — a cruise vacation void of rigid dining schedules and dress codes — and is popular for those seeking a casual, resort-at-sea experience.

The ship features a wide range of dining venues like O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill for comfort food, Food Republic for Asian-Latin fusion cuisine and Bayamo by Ocean Blue for seafood. Entertainment options include shows like "Deal or No Deal" and "Wheel of Fortune." Plenty of attractions — including the top-deck Aqua Park, a ropes course, a casino, a minigolf course and a spa — provide onboard diversions.

Norwegian does a great job of prioritizing the 10 port calls on this itinerary, many of which average eight hours in length, so you can see as much of the destination as possible. Fill a day at the Balearic island of Ibiza in unspoiled Ses Salines Natural Park or the historic Dalt Vila district. In Cannes, France, tour the old town or peruse the Picasso Museum. Marvel at Michelangelo's David or browse some of Europe's oldest markets in Italy.

An April 8 sailing in 2024 is available. Fares start from $949 per person for an inside cabin. Fares exclude taxes, fees and port expenses (about $395 per person).

Holland America Line: Extended bucket-list cruises

If a monthlong voyage is on your wish list, Holland America Line offers two such cruises from New York City aboard the 1,400-passenger Volendam.

The 30-night Amazon Explorer departs from Manhattan and weaves its way through the Caribbean isles to Brazil, with port calls along the banks of the Amazon River. The itinerary then continues back through the Caribbean before finishing in Fort Lauderdale.

Cruisers have time to explore the iconic rainforest thanks to an overnight port call in Manaus, Brazil. Other destination highlights include St. Maarten; St. Lucia; Barbados; Devils Island, French Guiana; Santarem, Manaus and Parintins, Brazil; Trinidad and Tobago; Curacao; and Aruba.

Or, go all-out on a trip of a lifetime with the 45-night Ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic Passage cruise. The round-trip itinerary from New York is one to add to your bucket list. Imagine overnight stays in Rome, Cairo and Istanbul — no air travel needed.

In Ponta Delgada, Portugal, cook your lunch in the natural hot springs of Furnas. Barcelona provides the opportunity to peruse art museums and sample authentic tapas. Additional port calls include Florence and Naples, Italy; Santorini, Greece; Seville, Spain; and Madeira, Portugal.

Volendam's smaller size means fewer onboard amenities, but guests can spend their sea days enjoying abundant and diverse live music options, a top-notch spa and fantastic food developed by culinary heavyweights like Ethan Stowell, Rudi Sodamin and Masaharu Morimoto.

Embarking in Cape Liberty, New Jersey, guests enjoy a day at sea aboard Oasis of the Seas en route to Port Canaveral in Florida. After a day exploring the Kennedy Space Center's interactive exhibits or visiting Walt Disney World, the ship heads to CocoCay in the Bahamas. Guests have a day to spend at Thrill Waterpark, Oasis Lagoon, or Coco Beach Club.

Then it's on to Nassau and its white-sand beaches and sparkling waters to swim with stingrays or dolphins, cruise in a glass-bottom boat, kayak, or jet ski. Taste the island cuisine while visiting Festival Place or shop for duty-free goods at nearby Bay Street before boarding the ship for two days at sea en route to Cape Liberty. Onboard, there are activities for young cruisers and a variety of entertainment options for adults along with restaurants, lounges, and a spa.

Norwegian Cruise Line

10-day Cruise to Caribbean: Dominican Republic and Grand Turk

This 10-day adventure begins in New York City with two days at sea en route to Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos, where guests can lounge on gorgeous beaches, dive, snorkel, or explore the island by boat or scooter. The following day in St. Thomas, they can snorkel among tropical reefs or take a Skyride to soar high above the Caribbean. Then it's on to Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic, where Ocean World presents visitors with hands-on experiences with tropical fish, marine mammals, birds, and more.

Continuing to St. Maarten, guests can tour the island by Trolley Train or explore the undersea life in a semi-submarine. The last stop in Tortola, British Virgin Islands offers an opportunity to swim, snorkel, or just relax on pristine white-sand beaches.

Another two days at sea aboard Norwegian Gem provide time for guests to enjoy the ship's amenities, including basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts, a spa, video arcade, and pools for kids and adults. Dining options range from casual to elegant, and nightly entertainment includes music, dancing, a casino, cigar club, and cocktail lounges.

16-day Cruise to Italy, France, and Spain

Norwegian Breakaway departs from New York for a day at sea before arriving in Bermuda for swimming, sailing, snorkeling, golfing, or just relaxing on the beach. After four days at sea, the ship arrives in scenic Ponta Delgada, Azores with opportunities for wine tasting or touring. One more day at sea takes the ship to Lisbon, Portugal to explore a castle and museums, and then on to Cadiz, Spain where guests can find flavorful tapas, locally-produced sherry, and perhaps a flamenco dance show.

The next day is spent in Granada, Spain before cruising on to Valencia, Spain for shopping and sightseeing in the lively gothic plazas. The following day, guests arrive in Barcelona with its inspiring architecture. Then, it's on to the French Riviera with the next stop in Cannes, France before cruising to Florence/Pisa. Passengers will disembark in Rome, where they can remain for a time or return to New York.

Seven-day Canada and New England Cruise

The cruise boards in New York, where guests can explore the highlights of the city, including the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, and more. The next day, the ship arrives in Newport, Rhode Island with excursions like a tour of the city's grand mansions or a lighthouse and harbor cruise.

Seven-night Hudson River Cruise

Next are Kingston and Hyde Park where guests can tour the Vanderbilt Mansion, FDR Home & Museum, or Maritime Museum.

Albany and Troy, New York are next stops, with an opportunity to tour the newly-renovated State Capitol Building and New York State Museum. In Troy, there's a walking tour and Troy Lock and Dam cruise. Catskill, NY is the next stop, with the Hunter Mountain Skyride and Hudson River Art School Trail. In Sleepy Hollow, guests can tour the home of Washington Irving or the Gothic Lyndhurst Mansion. The next day, New York City's skyline comes into view as the ship returns.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

14-night Afar Atlantic Isles Cruise, New York to Miami

The Seven Seas Navigator departs from New York for a day at sea before reaching Hamilton, Bermuda where guests can visit the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo. The next port is St. George in Bermuda for a walking tour, bike ride, or cave exploration. Transport options from the airport to your hotel in New York

There are three main airports servicing New York City.

A private car service is the most expensive way to travel from the airport. If you want the convenience this offers, you can often book this directly with your hotel when you make your room reservation.

Alternatively, you can travel between the airport and your hotel using one of the following:

JFK International

Located 21km south of Manhattan, JFK International is not our favorite airport. A bit old and somewhat chaotic, with facilities that have seen better days, you will not want to spend more time than you have here.

Taxi: A Taxi from JFK to Manhattan will cost around $60 plus a tip to your driver (approximately 15% of your fare). A taxi is the most convenient and direct way to get to your hotel.

Bus: New York City Express bus is the shuttle service that offers transportation from the airport to Midtown Manhattan. A return ticket costs around $35 per person. This will get you into Manhattan, but it is not a door-to-door service.

Shuttle Bus: Go Airlink NYC offers a good shared-ride shuttle service from the airport directly to your hotel. You book online before you leave home. However, your journey time may be extended depending on the number of hotels the shuttle bus stops. A ticket costs around $25 per person.

Train: There is also a commuter and subway combination, but we do not recommend this when visiting the city. There are too many stops, and it’s too complicated to navigate with luggage.

Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey

The airport is located approximately 30km west of Manhattan, New Jersey.

Taxi: A Taxi from Newark Airport to Manhattan will cost around $80 plus a tip to your driver (about 15% of your fare). This is the most convenient and direct way to get to your hotel.

Bus: New York City Express offers transportation from the airport to Manhattan. Buses go from terminals A, B, and C and take you into Midtown Manhattan, but not directly to your hotel. The stops in Midtown Manhattan are:

• Grand Central Station (41st Street between Park & Lexington Avenues) 
• Bryant Park (42nd Street & Fifth Avenue)  
• Port Authority Bus Terminal (41st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues)   

Unless your hotel is within walking distance, you must get the subway or taxi from here.

Train: The Airtrain departs from all 3 of Newark’s terminals and runs every 15 minutes very conveniently. Follow the signs at the airport and buy your ticket at one of the machines before boarding. Get the Airtrain to Newark Liberty Airtrain Station (journey time about 10 minutes), then change trains. It would help if you had a New Jersey transit train to get you to New York Penn Station, about a 30-minute ride. A one-way fare is around $16 per person.

As a smaller airport, La Guardia services domestic flights and is located just east of Manhattan in Queens.

Taxi: A Taxi from La Guardia Airport to Manhattan will cost around $50 plus a tip to your driver (about 15% of your fare). This is the most convenient and direct way to get to your hotel. However, traffic is unpredictable, and the journey could take only a half hour, or if busy, over an hour.

Train/Subway: You can use the subway to get to Manhattan from La Guardia. Buy a metro card at the machines at the airport and follow the signs.

Swipe your card at the entrance to the subway. It will take you to Broadway and W. 106 Street. If you have heavy luggage, we do not recommend this option.

Where to stay in New York

Let’s start with where to stay before your cruise from New York. Staying in Manhattan will allow you to get around quickly to all the major sites, attractions, and experiences the city offers.

Sixty SOHO is an edgy, intimate hotel in the heart of new york’s Soho district. It is a good choice if you are a couple. There is a great restaurant and a fantastic rooftop bar, A60, where you can see the New York skyline in all its glory.

The hotel’s standard rooms are pretty small but beautifully furnished. Perfect for a couple. However, you must book two rooms for a family of four with older kids. We love the location. You are between Lower Manhattan and Midtown, close to the vibrant Greenwich Village.

Courtyard by Marriott Soho

Courtyard by Marriott Soho is excellent if you are a family and need a room for a maximum of 4 people. They offer rooms with two double beds, alternatively a double bed and a sofa that converts to a double. Perfect if you are traveling with kids, tweens, or teenagers and want to save on booking two separate rooms.

Holiday Inn Manhattan 6th Avenue, Chelsea

Located about a 12-minute walk from the Empire State Building, this Holiday Inn is in a good, convenient location. They have family rooms that comfortably sleep up to 4 guests, and as with all Holiday Inn hotels, you can include the breakfast price in your booking if you want to.

Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan

If you want to be amongst the bright neon lights, then the Crowne Plaza Times Square is a hugely popular choice with visitors. Located on Broadway, you are within walking distance of all Midtown Manhattan sights. And Strawberry Fields in Central Park is less than a 30-minute walk from your hotel.

ROW NYC Hotel

What we love about this trendy hotel, located close to Times Square, is the City Kitchen. A food market that opens seven days a week, offering a taste of the city’s best dishes – right at your hotel.

Holiday Inn Wall Street

Do you prefer the buzz of downtown and want to be close to the Financial District? Then this is the hotel for you. Holiday Inn will give you comfortable accommodation and good front-desk service, well-priced for the location, and surrounded by cafes, bars, and restaurants.

Three ways to see the best of New York

We cover three broad areas of the city, each of which you can explore as much or as little as you have time. And in any order you like.

In a city with so much to offer, adding a pocket guidebook to your cruise packing list is a good idea, so you don’t miss anything. And remember not just to walk, but explore too. Take time in the New York Library, the One World Observatory, or boating in Central Park, depending on what you want most from your trip.

Day 1: Lower Manhattan

9/11 memorial and museum.

Start early at Ground Zero. The former World Trade Center site and now the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Experience through media and narration the effects of 9/11 and see and read the stories for yourself. The memorial is free, but you must purchase museum tickets in advance. It is an incredible experience, and we spent around 2 hours here, so start early to make the most of your visit.

As you leave the memorial, remember to look at the spectacular architecture surrounding you. Go inside the Oculus. That’s the building of graceful white lines that looks like wings. It’s the transportation hub of the World Trade Center. Go inside to explore the plaza and shopping mall.

When you leave, walk 10 minutes south to arrive at the Federal Hall National Memorial, just at Broadway and Wall Street. Stand beside the statue. You are now on the spot where George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States in 1789. 

Trinity Church and Stock Exchange

From here, walk straight up Broadway until you reach Trinity Church, where you will find the grave of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers and the historical figure portrayed in the Broadway hit Hamilton.

Walk to the Stock Exchange but expect long queues if you want to go inside. The neoclassical facade hides a hive of activity, with traders shouting their messages to each other and constant news updates on giant screens.

After some photos of the famous bronze bull, grab a morning coffee and pass the bronze Charging Bull statue to sit in Bowling Green Park, the oldest public park in New York. 

Battery Park, Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island

Continue towards the Cunard Building, which now houses the New York Post Office, and look at the beautiful interior before heading towards Battery Park.

Lying alongside New York’s harbor, the Castle Clinton National Monument marks where the first immigrants to NYC landed. Walk through Battery Park, and you’ll see one of the most iconic views of New York, the Statue of Liberty. You can buy a ticket to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty here.

A visit to the Ellis Island immigration museum will take you a good couple of hours, and we bought a ticket through statue city cruises. The last entrance is at 5 pm, so aim to be on the ferry by mid-afternoon. We purchased a priority entrance ticket with access to Liberty Island and Ellis Island grounds with the audio tour. But if you buy a New York City Pass, you will save on the entrance price when you book.

Day 2: Midtown Manhattan and Central Park

Start your day early at the train station! Your starting point today is the fantastic Beaux-arts-style Grand Central Terminal. Probably the most beautiful train station you will ever visit. The station has been designated a National Historic Landmark and has many snack bars, boutiques, and a great food market. So grab a coffee and start your day here.

Empire State Building

Exit Grand Central Station on West 42nd Street and walk until you turn south onto 5th Avenue. You will walk past the New York Public Library. If you want to go inside, visit the Rose Main Reading Room – famous for its 50-foot vaulted ceiling and elaborate chandeliers. You can peek inside without any entrance fee.

Continue down 5th Avenue to the Empire State Building. The elevator to the 86th floor (the main deck with an open-air viewing platform) takes less than a minute. Inside the elevator, you see a great movie showing the history of the skyscraper before you get to the exhibits.

The observatory offers 360° views over New York and Central Park 320 m up from the ground. You can see uptown into Harlem or downtown to Brooklyn Bridge. If you have time, take the elevator from the top deck to the 86th floor to the 102nd floor. You’ll have to upgrade your entrance ticket first to do this. This viewing deck is much smaller and glass enclosed.

A short 5-minute walk away. You can get your fill of shopping at Macy’s Herald Square before lunch. This iconic department store covers a whole block in the heart of New York. Get clothes from Ralph Lauren, cosmetics from Estée Lauder, and electronics from Sony all under one roof. You’ll find Macy’s located on Broadway and West 34th Street.

Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Radio City

Head north on 7th Avenue to Times Square and marvel at the neon lights, the noise, and the traffic, at one of the world’s best-known Squares. You can visit Rockefeller Center, Saks 6th Avenue, Radio City Music Hall, and the Museum of Modern Art. This area is packed with sights and endless shopping possibilities.

Rockefeller Center is located on Sixth Avenue and West 48th Street. This iconic building houses commercial offices, restaurants, and a famous ice-skating rink in the wintertime. You can pay to take an elevator up to the observation deck for some of the best views over Manhattan.

Take your time and enjoy yourself before heading toward Carnegie Hall, home of the most prestigious concert stage in the USA. From here, you are a short walk away from the edge of Central Park.

Central Park and world-class museums

Central Park has the Metropolitan Museum of Art on one side and the Natural History Museum on the other. The Natural History Museum is one of the world’s largest art museums. Pre-book tickets online to avoid queues for entrance tickets which can be hours long! A whole floor is devoted to dinosaur exhibits, with more than 30 fully-mounted skeletons. It’s a great place for kids too.

Enter the center of Central Park and stroll around this vast open space and explore Strawberry Fields (John Lennon’s memorial). Visitors from all over New York City flock here for fresh air. It’s a much-loved oasis surrounded by skyscrapers.

If you have enough energy, continue up the park’s east side and visit the famous Guggenheim Museum. Take a taxi or the subway back to your hotel at the end of your day.

Day 3: Greenwich Village, Union Square, and The High Line

We love Greenwich Village and its orderly north-south/east-west grid system. You find yourself in a tree-lined maze of smaller streets full of charming low-rise brownstones.

Greenwich Village

Explore MacDougal Alley, Washington Mews, Grove Court, and Cherry Lane Theater. You’ll soon appreciate how these traditional buildings contrast with Manhattan’s modern skyscrapers. And why Greenwich Village is so loved. Walk between West 4th and West 8th streets. It’s packed full of small shops and cafes. The historical Italian café Caffe Reggio on MacDougal Street is a great place to relax with a coffee.

Washington Square Park and Union Square

Time for a scoop of gelato from DO, Cookie Dough Confections on LaGuardia Pl. and West 3rd St. Walk to Washington Square Park. Named for George Washington with its iconic arch, you mix with locals, artists, chess players, and university students. Head to the fountain. You are now standing where Bob Dylan sang his first protest songs. 

Walk through the arch and onto 5th Avenue. After about 15 minutes, turn east onto 15th St and head into Union Square. Here is a busy pedestrian plaza, a food market (Green Market), and a good choice of lunch venues.

Exit the park on the other side and head north on Broadway to reach the Flatiron Building. The iconic narrow steel building is shaped like an iron. From here, we walked about 30 minutes into Chelsea. Once there, we made our way to the start of the High Line.

The Highline and Little Island

The Highline is one of the best places to walk in New York City. This 2.3 km long park built on an old elevated rail line has become a destination for visitors and locals alike. So much so that it’s worth planning your visit around the events happening at various points along this stretch. The Highline stretches through Greenwich Village, the Meatpacking District, Chelsea, and Midtown Manhattan with fantastic views. It’s also an excellent walk to do with kids.

Along The Highline are plenty of highlights and a few places to stop for lunch or coffee.

There are multiple starting points for your walk along the Highline. The south end of The Highline is at Gansevoort St. and Washington St. If you prefer to have a guide, many tours begin here. The whole walk takes around 2 hours to complete.

Close by the Highline in the Meet Packing District is the newly opened Little Island public park. This wonderful, free public park is at Pier 55 in Hudson River Park at West 13th Street. Inside the park are a theater, a stage, and a plaza where you can buy food and drinks. The idea is that this outdoor space is open to everyone to enjoy a green oasis in the middle of the city. How to get to the cruise port from Manhattan

New York has three cruise ports:

• Brooklyn Cruise Terminal
• The Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal
• Manhattan Cruise Terminal

Check your cruise ticket to see which port your cruise departs from, and allow plenty of time to get there. Traffic can be pretty much a nightmare at any time of day in Manhattan.

We strongly recommend pre-booking a transfer service with a private car from your hotel to your cruise port. Alternatively, ask your hotel to book you a taxi cab. There are alternative ways to get there using public transport, but it takes too much time with too many changes along the way. This, together with carrying luggage, makes for an exhausting transfer.

Keep it easy and trouble-free by taking a car or taxi. We transferred from our hotel in Greenwich Village to the Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal in Bayonne, NJ, for our cruise with Royal Caribbean International . It took nearly an hour. Allow plenty of time to get there. Traffic in New York is chaotic and unpredictable. Even if you arrive at the port earlier than your designated boarding time, you will likely be able to board your cruise within a short time of coming and checking in.

The Lake House is the first hotel of its kind to open on Canandaigua Lake, the fourth largest of the Finger Lakes. Cooperstown is undeniably family-friendly – it's home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and Cooperstown Dreams Park, after all. But this central New York village is also ideal for a romantic weekend getaway, whether you and your beau are baseball fans or not.

Nicknamed "America's Most Perfect Village," Cooperstown boasts plenty of boutiques, breweries and art galleries, such as the Fenimore Art Museum, located on a property once owned by James Fenimore Cooper, author of "The Last of the Mohicans." In the winter, you and your partner can also try cross-country skiing or showshoeing at Glimmerglass State Park.

The village's grand dame, The Otesaga Resort Hotel, features romantic accommodations in which couples can wake up to the sun rising over Otsego Lake. Seasonally, hotel guests can enjoy water sports on the lake and cocktails at the outdoor Fire Bar overlooking the water. The luxury resort also features the Hawkeye Spa and fine dining at 1909 on Friday evenings. Glenmere Mansion: Chester

You'd never guess that this 150-acre estate is located in the U.S., let alone that it's only around 70 miles from New York City. Constructed in 1911, the mansion – then the summer home of industrialist Robert Goet – sits in the countryside of the Hudson Valley, intended to resemble the villas of Tuscany at the time. Now a Relais & Châteaux boutique hotel , Glenmere Mansion features more than a dozen guest rooms, each one thoughtfully redesigned and unique. Most rooms have fireplaces, and many offer terraces.

Romantic retreats can (and should) include indulging at the Glenmere spa, which features a tandem suite with side-by-side soaking tubs and treatment tables. Guests of the spa enjoy pre- or post-treatment tapas and access to a variety of amenities, including an herbal steam room, dry heat sauna and a Swiss shower.

Mohonk Mountain House: New Paltz

Perhaps the grandest of all the mansions and castles in New York (and the U.S.) is Mohonk Mountain House. Founded in 1869, the resort can be found tucked into the Hudson Valley, less than 100 miles from New York City.

Another major draw? While the Catskills may always be synonymous with "Dirty Dancing," the region looks a bit different than it did when Frances "Baby" Houseman and Johnny Castle fell in love here. A boom in boutique lodging options is once again attracting travelers to an area that saw a period of decline from the 1970s until recent years.

Known as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," Niagara Falls is the original romantic getaway in New York. Couples in search of romance have been visiting the region since the 1800s, particularly after the Erie Canal opened. Connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River, the canal – along with railroad expansions – made Niagara Falls a more accessible vacation destination for honeymooners.

Today, couples who want to experience the beauty of this natural wonder can hike or bike scenic trails at Niagara Falls State Park. Hutton Brickyards: Kingston

The Hudson Valley's last architecturally intact brick manufactory, Hutton Brickyards, sits on more than 70 lush acres overlooking the Hudson River. Here, lovebirds can hide out in waterfront cabins and luxurious suites designed to optimize privacy, then enjoy on-site activities such as spa treatments, yoga, sip-and-paint sessions, archery, kayaking and nature walks. While the Hamptons remains an elite vacation spot on Long Island, the North Fork has been giving that resort destination a run for its money – especially in recent years. Thanks to an ideal terroir for growing grapes, Long Island has an established wine scene, with most of the vineyards and wineries located on the North Fork. Couples can relax by the seaside in Orient Beach State Park, where beachgoers enjoy kayaking, windsurfing, fishing and other opportunities for outdoor recreation. Round out your romantic getaway in Long Island with a game of golf and some upscale dining, then check into one of the North Fork's boutique hotels or bed-and-breakfasts .

Often considered New York City's sixth borough, Westchester County is perfect for a weekend getaway with your partner. Just north of Manhattan, set between the Hudson River and Long Island Sound, Westchester County offers a little bit of everything: quaint river towns (including the legendary Sleepy Hollow), beaches, historic landmarks, seasonal events, and hiking and biking trails galore. You can also traverse the Westchester Farm Trail, which encompasses 13 farms and orchards with markets, U-pick options and more.

The AAA Four Diamond resort boasts a variety of rustic-luxe suites (including one-bedroom options), most with cast-iron fireplaces, jetted tubs, and patios or balconies. Romantic on-site amenities and activities include evening drinks under the stars in a private lean-to; a spa with hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas; ice skating in the winter; and fine dining at Kanu, where guests say the atmosphere alone is worth a dinner reservation.

A two-time host of the Winter Olympics, Lake Placid offers a variety of Olympics-inspired museums and experiences, with unique winter activities including bobsledding at Mount Van Hoevenberg and dog-sledding on frozen Mirror Lake. Of course, there's also skiing, snowboarding and the like at Whiteface Mountain, one of the best ski resorts in New York . While you're visiting, take time for a romantic stroll along Lake Placid's Main Street, which looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. There are plenty of vacation rentals on Lake George, but if you're looking for the ultimate escape with your partner, book a stay at The Sagamore Resort (part of the Opal Collection). Located on a 70-acre private island in the Adirondacks, the hotel features award-winning dining, an 18-hole golf course, a full-service spa, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Tuck into Troutbeck, a historic estate hotel whose most famous guests include Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Located in the Hudson Valley, the hotel features field-to-fork dining led by Michelin-starred chef Gabe McMackin, as well as The Barns, a wellness facility featuring yoga, meditation and Kinesoma classes (dance-based movement). The wellness offerings also include services such as acupuncture and massages. An outdoor swimming pool and grill, hammock and picnic sites, tennis courts, and free bike rentals complement the serene setting.

For an especially romantic lodging option, book the Dunham Suite, named for its lovely view of the nearby creek. The suite features a king-size, four-poster bed; a gas fireplace; a wet bar with a minifridge; heated bathroom flooring; and a standalone soaking tub and separate rain shower. Recent guests say they enjoyed the beauty and history of this hotel from the 1700s.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel with a 57-year history of breaking boundaries, launched its 2024 Europe travel season on April 19, 2024 with the arrival of Norwegian Epic to its seasonal homeport of Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy, before embarking on a 10-day Greek Isles and Italy voyage.

During this summer travel season, guests embarking on NCL cruises in Europe will have the opportunity to choose from 101 distinctive itineraries with 38 roundtrips and 63 open-jaw sailings, calling to 140 captivating ports across Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, and the Atlantic Coast.  Additionally, guests can fully explore highlight destinations such as Istanbul, Turkey; Florence (Livorno), Italy and Reykjavik, Iceland with select itineraries offering overnight calls. Cruises will be departing from 13 homeports with New York City; Le Havre (Paris), France; and Oslo, Norway being three brand new options for NCL voyages to Europe.  The Company will have a total of nine ships 1 in region, including its newest innovative vessels, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva , as well as Norwegian Escape , which returns to Europe following its first successful season in 2022.

With an average of 10 hours in port, guests can explore at their leisure or choose from a wide range of shore excursions designed to provide guests with an in-depth experience of each destination. Itinerary highlights for NCL cruises in Europe include:

Norwegian Star Sails a Series of Open-Jaw Sailings to Iceland, Greenland and Canada

Norwegian Getaway will homeport in Athens (Piraeus), Greece on June 25 embarking on seven- to 10-day Greek Isles roundtrip itineraries . Each day, the ship will moor at a new port allowing guests to explore bucket-list destinations like Istanbul, Turkey; Iraklion, Santorini and Mykonos, Greece as well as hidden gem Izmir (Ephesus), Turkey. Select departures include overnight stays in Istanbul giving guests more than 24 hours to visit Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar.

Norwegian Viva’s Cruises to the Mediterranean

Between May and November 2024, NCL's newest ship, Norwegian Viva, offers guests a selection of nine, 10- and 11-day open-jaw voyages cruising the Mediterranean. These unique itineraries feature a different embarkation and disembarkation port in sought-after destinations such as Athens (Piraeus), Greece; Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy, allowing travelers the opportunity to plan an extended vacation either pre- or post-cruise. 

Almost No Days at Sea Onboard Norwegian Escape’s Mediterranean Sailings

Norwegian Escape will be the Company's largest vessel in Europe this season at nearly 165,000 gross tons. The ship will homeport in Barcelona, Spain; Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy; and Trieste (Venice), Italy sailing eight- to 10-day roundtrip sailings in the Western Mediterranean calling to a sun-kissed port each day as well as seven- to 11-day open-jaw sailings with stints in Italy, Greece and France with only one day at sea.

Additionally, NCL cruises in Europe are already on sale through December 2025 giving guests the chance to plan and book their next summer getaway early.

A few days later, bellied up to the beachside bar at the all-inclusive Dreams Macao Beach Punta Cana resort (where, in place of barstools, swings are suspended from the thatched ceiling), I sipped a mojito, cracked open James Salter’s Light Years, a novel I reread annually, and knew that I’d chosen well.

But if I’d had any regrets, summoning a new paperback would’ve been as easy as ringing for a book butler. I was down in the DR to experience Pages in Paradise, a collaboration between the publisher Penguin Random House, Belletrist Book Club (the brainchild of actress Emma Roberts), and Apple Vacations (no relation to the iPhone maker). For readers who like to beach, the retreat left no page unturned. The programming kicked off even before check-in: Ahead of arrival, guests could log in to the resort’s app to reserve beach reads from an on-site library curated by Belletrist. Housed in the airy hotel lobby, the collection included buzzy contemporary fiction by the likes of Zadie Smith and Curtis Sittenfeld. Guests could also order books via room service (or personal butler) anytime or select one from the chic library carts located at the adults-only pool. The property’s various bars featured the “Pages Pour,” a specialty cocktail themed to the program’s inaugural book-of-the-month selection, Jenny Xie’s debut novel, Holding Pattern . They called the drink a gin-fashioned—a fruit-forward riff on the old-fashioned, zippy with pineapple-cinnamon syrup.

Exotic as this tropical gathering of book lovers might have been, it’s just one example of a fast-growing business trend: literary-themed travel. We have the pandemic to thank. Reading surged in the early days of Covid, and the habit stuck as lockdowns eased: The biggest two years on record for print book sales in the U.S. were 2021 and 2022. Hotels and tourism companies, eager to lure back travelers, seized on the surge and began featuring books in their marketing. What began as a travel perk has become a full-blown movement to cater to readers with an explosion of new programming, from big-ticket experiences promising author access to solitary retreats. I know, I know—planning a trip around your reading list may never replace your annual golf weekend, but when else will you get the time to actually enjoy that stack on your nightstand? And if it all sounds like giving yourself homework, don’t worry—there definitely won’t be a quiz, and did I mention the drinks?

As a professional book recommender, the question I’m asked most often is “What book should I bring on my vacation?” ​But now there’s a new question to consider: What kind of literary vacation should I plan?

Not every reader is content to lie by the pool and read for days on end. Some are looking for a more kinetic experience—one that lets them interact with fellow readers, and even their favorite writers. Enter the “ Gone Girl cruise.” In fall 2022, author Gillian Flynn set sail down the Danube with some of her biggest (and most well-heeled) fans as part of Avalon Waterways’ Storyteller Series, cruises that offer literary travelers a chance to voyage in close quarters with authors and other storytellers. When Flynn tweeted about the cruise, it quickly became a viral sensation. On-board accounts detailed a true-crime extravaganza, with guests returning to their rooms each night to discover blood-spattered notes, themed to Flynn’s novels, on their pillows. Sure, it’s a little dorky—but we’re all fans of something, and if crime novels are your thing, what could be better?

For readers who can’t splash out for getaways abroad, there are literary destinations closer to home, too. In the artsy hamlet of New Hope, Pennsylvania, the historic luxury hotel River House at Odette’s offers Riverside Reading (in partnership with Bedside Reading), a program that pairs complimentary access to a curated library (via digital app or hard copies throughout the hotel) with intimate author experiences. With bookshelves stationed on each floor and authors rolling through seasonally, guests can dip in and out of the programming as they please.

When I visited River House deep in the grips of a harsh Pennsylvania winter, I discovered a reader’s paradise: My room boasted a fireplace, a private balcony, and serene views of the rushing Delaware River. After turndown service, I found a keepsake leather bookmark on my pillow. That evening, a few dozen guests gathered for a talkback with the novelist Jean Hanff Korelitz. In a ballroom festooned with red carnations (a nod to the cover of her latest book, The Latecomers ), Korelitz fielded rapid-fire questions about her inspiration, her writing process, and her hit novel The Plot . After the formal conversation concluded, starstruck guests crowded around her at the bar. “When people come up to you and say, ‘I loved your book,’ that really means something to writers,” Korelitz told me. As the owner of BookTheWriter, a service connecting authors and readers through pop-up book clubs hosted in New York City apartments, Korelitz knows a thing or two about making connections. In the recent boom of literary travel experiences, she sees a broader post-pandemic trend of readers craving the chance to get up close and personal with their favorite writers. “The ways of access to authors have multiplied exponentially,” she said. “I find it to be very inspiring.”

For an early-career author like Xie, who was at Pages in Paradise, seeing her novel highlighted was both exciting and transformative. That’s the thing about literary travel—it allows us to transcend our ordinary lives in more ways than one. “There’s a certain sense that we don’t have the space to read unless we’re traveling or living outside of our day-to-day,” said Xie. “A book takes you outside of your physical environment and your lived experience. Travel does that, too, so they join together in this really beautiful way to truly transport you.” That’s a journey worth taking.

Israel Faced a Sophisticated Attack From Iran

The weapons Iran employed this weekend travel farther and are more precise than those Hamas and other allies have used against Israel in the past six months.

Late Saturday, Iran began firing hundreds of drones and missiles at Israel, including weapons that experts say are more sophisticated than anything Israel had encountered until now in six months of fighting with Hamas and its allies in the region.

Previously, Israel had faced aerial attacks from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, whose rocket arsenal includes short-range (12 to 25 miles) and somewhat inaccurate 122-milimeter rockets of the Grad family, as well as Syrian-made M-302 rockets with a range of about 100 miles. Hamas also has Fajr-5 rockets from Iran and a similar, locally made version of the Fajr-5, both with a range of about 50 miles.

The weapons Iran used on Saturday can travel much farther, and some of them can travel much faster. Still, Israel said that nearly all of the missiles and drones that Iran fired were intercepted, many with help from U.S. forces.

In the attack, 185 drones, 36 cruise missiles and 110 surface-to-surface missiles were fired toward Israel, according to Israeli military officials. Most of the launches were from Iran, though a small portion came from Iraq and Yemen, the officials said.

Fabian Hinz, an expert on Iran’s military at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Berlin, said in a post on X that Iran was probably using a cruise missile developed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, the Paveh 351. It has a range of more than 1,200 miles — plenty to reach Israel from Iran.

According to his post, different versions of that missile have also been provided to the Houthis in Yemen and to the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces.

And Jeffrey Lewis, a member of the International Security Advisory Board at the U.S. State Department, said in a post on X that Iran was using land-attack cruise missiles that could carry around a ton of explosives.

He also noted that much of Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal has a long enough range to reach Israel. And though Iran’s drones carry much smaller explosive payloads than missiles, they have the advantage of being able to hover and shift targets.

In recent decades, Iran has largely been focused on deterrence, long-range missiles, drones and air defenses. It has one of the largest ballistic missile and drone arsenals across the Middle East, according to weapons experts, and is also becoming a major arms exporter globally.

Last year, after the attack by Hamas in October, Israel asked the United States for more precision-guided munitions for its combat aircraft and more interceptors for its Iron Dome missile defense system. Israel’s weapons arsenal includes Vietnam-era missiles, some of which have a failure rate as high as 15 percent.
