Much more than simply a bridge between the Northern and Southern parts of a diverse, multifaceted continent, Central America has its own riches to unveil to the visitor. From the remains of the Maya civilisation on the Yucatán Peninsula to Belize and Guatemala extends a dense blanket of vegetation unlike anything else in the world.

Central America's colonial past, evident in the architecture of many of the towns and cities, also finds its echo in certain international-scale constructions in the region. Thus the transit of the Panama Canal continues to be one of the major attractions of a cruise to Central America .

Unveil the secrets of Mayan civilisation

Before the Spanish conquest, the Mayans reigned supreme in Central America. The ruins of their city-states are still there to remind us of this. Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Palenque, Uxmal, the archaeological site of Edzná on the Yucatán peninsula, Lamanai in Belize, Tikal in Guatemala, Tazumal in El Salvador... These artefacts from a bygone era are dotted all over Central America. Temples, pyramids and other gems remind us of the power of a people who have developed a sophisticated writing system, and a rich culture and economy. Whether they're found peeking out of the jungle or overlooking the sea, the remains of Mayan cities are essential stops on a journey to Central America.

With our naturalist guides by your side, you won't miss any of the surprises hidden within the coral reefs, including multicoloured fish and marine turtles, or the exceptional opportunity to swim with sea lions at Los Islotes off Baja California. Explore the canopy, primary forests, and national parks in Costa Rica, where the sounds of vibrant nature call to travellers. Along the volcanic landscapes of Guatemala or Nicaragua, the lakes, rivers and mangroves complement the lush landscapes of this region, which accounts for 7% of the world's biodiversity.

Explore remarkable historic towns

Whatever Central American countries you visit, the colonial footprint is there to remind you of the region's past. With perfectly preserved historic centres, the cities of La Antigua in Guatemala City and Granada in Nicaragua are perfect examples. In Mexico, the fortified city of Campeche and the capital of Yucatán, Merida, are simply amazing. Belize City and Panama City also have their share of unmissable monuments. In Panama, you of course won't want to miss the famous canal. It has a story that's just as interesting as those of the colonial cities.

Colon, Panama.koh LOHN(2000 pop. 204,208), is the second largest city in Panama, at the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal. Colon was surrounded by, but not part of, the former Panama Canal Zone. Colon is an important port, commercial center, and tourist destination. It was made a free trade zone in 1953 and is the world’s second largest duty-free port. The city was founded in 1850 by Americans working on the Panama railroad and was named Aspinwall after one of the builders of the railway until 1890. Colon is the Spanish form of Columbus; the name of the neighboring port of Cristobal is Spanish for Christopher. After completion of the railway in 1855, Colon overshadowed the older Caribbean ports of Panama, and with the first plans for the isthmian canal it took on additional prestige. Built on a swampy island, the city was notoriously unhealthful and often scourged by yellow fever until Colonel William C. Gorgas, in charge of sanitation during the canal construction, gave it a new system of waterworks and sewerage and drained the surrounding swamps. Three modern ports make Colon one of the most important ports of the Caribbean Sea. It is connected to Panama City by Road, Rail, Air and of course the Panama Canal!

The city was built in 1871 on the site of the Native American village of Cariari, which was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1502. Prospering after the construction of the railroad in 1890, it was the leading banana port of Costa Rica until the 1930s.

The beautiful island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico, is a paradise for divers from all over the world. The island is surrounded by more than 25 reef formations where divers of all ages and skills can enter into a completely fascinating and different world: endless coral inhabited by immense shoals of colorful fish. The possibilities are interminable for both beginners and experts. East of the Yucatán Peninsula, on top of the age-old structures of the Mayan coral reef, the second largest in the world, stands the Island of Cozumel, the largest inhabited island in Mexico. Its name, derived from the word Cuzamil, meaning “island of swallows” in Maya, conjures up memories of its pre-Hispanic origin, the conquest of America and the pirates and buccaneers that thronged its seas. The Island of Cozumel measures 48 km from north to south but only 16 from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form a long, white sandy coast. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while huge waves crash against the eastern side. Its flora and fauna have a number of unusual features and include certain endemic species, such as the dwarf raccoon and the Cozumel wren. Cozumel’s greatest wealth, however, lies underwater.

Jungle Waterfalls in Belize

Into the Wilderness

The best Belize cruises will take you to enter a beautiful wild world, get a dose of underwater adventure and go deep into the forested areas to meet with jungle creatures and bathe under waterfalls during your holiday.

Mesoamerican Reef Surgeonfish. Belize City.

Diving Deep

The east coast of Belize is the stage for some of the most beautiful sea encounters in Central America. Dive the warm waters to find the Belize Barrier Reef, second only to Australia's, where you can explore the hundreds of colourful coral species that call this place their home.

White Sand Beach in Belize

Lapping Waves

Kick back at Placencia Peninsula with its soft sand and array of beachfront restaurants and bars. Head to Hopkins Village Beach for a nap by the beach under the palm tree shadows that cover the shore. Or hop on a boat to the cayes, like Ambergris, South Water and Laughingbird, and find even more beaches with soft sand.

The Belize Rainforest Jungle

Jungle Tunes

Listen to jungle sounds as you zip-line through the rainforest in Belize and keep an eye for the howler monkeys, foxes and kinkajou, a tiny and adorable rainforest mammal. Search for secret waterfalls and swimming holes within the forest and take your time to identify the tropical birds around you.

Belize Ancient Mayan Ruins

Caracol Mayan Ruins. Belize City.

Mother Maya

Head to the Toledo's Deep South and the Cayo District to explore Mayan archaeological wonders nestled within untouched jungle, like the step towers of Altun Ha and Xunantunich dating back thousands of years.

Local Mayan Art in Belize

Preserving the past

The most iconic museum in the entire country is the Museum of Belize, a former prison turned cultural exhibition that showcases the history of the country. Visit Belize to learn how it is influenced by Mayan traditions. For contemporary art and souvenirs, visit the Art Box, where you can get your hands on local arts and crafts while learning about the artists of Belize.

Twin Adventures

Opt for a cruise to Mexico and Belize so you can compare and contrast the two countries' ancient ruins and rainforest thrills.

Because Belize used to be a British colony, most locals speak English.

Instead of hiring a car, hire a golf cart, which can be less expensive and more fun.

Anytime is a good time to visit Belize – the country enjoys warm weather all year.

Belize's Cuisine Bite into Belize

Belize's cuisine makes use of Caribbean and Latin American classic recipes along with modern influences, cooking up flavours that are all Belizean.

Belizean Spicy Chicken Stew

A Little Extra

This is not your average plate of chicken: most Belizean recipes also include spicy sauce for an added punch. Try jerk chicken wings over rice and beans or spicy chicken stewed in coconut milk.

Polynesian Pork Plate

Taste the Waves

Belize's coastal location makes for a cuisine rich in seafood. Try hudut garifuna, an indigenous preparation of snapper over coconut milk, served alongside a plantain mash and cassava bread. Or grab a plate of barbecue conch tacos from a vendor on one of Belize's island beaches.

Belizean Salbutes

Snack Attack

Salbutes are a tasty snack composed of a fried and flaky corn tortilla topped with chicken, cabbage, tomato and sauce.
