History and Heritage

Cuenca, a fourth-class municipality in Batangas, holds a significant position as one of the province’s 31 component towns. Situated at the heart of Batangas, it was given the nickname “Cuenca” by Governor Paez in homage to his birthplace in Spain, which shares similar climate and lush landscapes. The town is known for its rich natural, historical, and cultural attractions.

Historical records indicate that Cuenca officially separated from its mother town, San Jose, on March 13, 1877, following a petition by esteemed leaders from Barrio Maculog. However, subsequent findings from the National Historical Institute and National Archives revealed that the true foundation date was November 7, 1876, leading to a correction of the town’s historical record.

To align with this discovery, the Sanggunian Bayan passed Resolution No. 2000-319 on November 6, 2000, officially amending the founding date of Cuenca. Consequently, the customary observance of the town’s founding anniversary, traditionally held every March 13, was shifted to November 7, starting from the year 2000 until the present.

The rainy season starts in June and ends in November. When December comes, the people experienced a very cool dawn. The summer season on the month of March to the end of May.

Mt. Maculot – Cuenca, Batangas (Climb Guide + Tips)

Climb Guide

THE MT. MACULOT ROCKIES

Mt. Maculot is located in Cuenca, Batangas . It is known for its “Rockies”, a place that boasts a breathtaking view of Taal Lake, Taal Volcano, and the rest of Batangas. Mt Maculot is day-hike-able. You can choose to just go to the Rockies or a full traverse going to the Grotto. Either way, it can be done in one day. The climb can be challenging since there is rappelling and rock climbing involved.

BATULAO OR MACULOT?

For the year 2016, I’m pushing myself to climb 4 mountains within a year. For the first climb, I invited my College Barkada and my girlfriend for a hike/outing. We haven’t been together for a long time and haven’t done it before. We always go to beaches and resorts when we go out of town. So, this time, a challenging one. 😛

We were planning to climb Mt. Batulao , but days before the climb, my contact told me that there were problems with the authorities at that time. So, I’ve searched for another mountain also located in Batangas . One of the famous hiking sites there is Mt. Maculot.

GOING THERE

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

We rode a DLTB Co. Bus in Buendia, going to Lemery, Batangas . The bus fare is 130 pesos. We got down to the town of Cuenca. The trip took 2 hours. Then, we rode a tricycle at the terminal in B. Laqui Street going to the Registration office. After the registration, the tricycle dropped us at the jump-off. Tricycle Fare is 20 pesos per head.

The authorities require guides for all who will climb.  The guide fee depends on your destination. We took the Rockies-Summit-Grotto traverse for 800 pesos for 5 persons, plus 100 for an excess individual. The fee reached 1000 pesos because we are 7 in the group.

We started our trek following the road going to the base of the mountain. The climb was composed of a series of assaults and the sun was starting to smile at us.

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

As we go higher, we can now see a part of Taal Lake. We happened to have climbed with a 70-year-old woman and her 2 Labradors. We were so amazed that she could still hike at that age. She told us that before retiring, she was just working and working. No time for vacations and that kind of activity. It was inspiring. It’s a smack on our faces— “Don’t let age hinder you from doing things you want to do” or “Do what you love before it’s too late”.

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

We ate our lunch at the campsite before proceeding to the Rockies.

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

  ROCKIES AND SUMMIT

Going to the “Rockies” is like climbing another mountain. We got down to its base, then climbed again. The trail going up was steep and we needed to use our wall climbing skills.

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

The Rockies somewhat covers the whole view of Taal lake. When we reached the top, we were astonished by the view in front of us.

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

After the Rockies, we proceeded to the summit. The trek was much easier and the sun was behind the clouds.

We reached the summit around 2:30 PM. The view was amazing! We saw Taal Lake, Taal Volcano, Tagaytay, Mt. Batulao , and probably half of Batangas ! 😛

We did it! 😀

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

THE DESCENT

The rain started to pour at the summit of Maculot. We decided to descend to avoid going down in the dark. The descent was challenging because of the wet trail. Mud has formed and the footing became slippery. Fortunately, ropes were tied on trees for us to hold on to while going down. Going down took most of our time because we were very careful. As we were nearing the Grotto, we stopped for an hour or so. The only way down is to rappel a few meters down. It can only accommodate 1 person and before us, there are other groups of hikers. We got stuck. We waited until our turn came. The reason for the long wait was because of hikers taking a lot of selfies. :l Please think of others. Always remember that the trek is not safe when it’s dark.

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

At last, we reached the Grotto. It was a good place to watch the sunset, but we didn’t stay long. We continued going down as the darkness came near and we only had one or two flashlights. We continued our descent on the stairs and we felt our legs shaking. It was dark, and the way down felt like forever. Luckily, we have our phone, we used its flash for light. After a lot of steps going down, we reached the base. Tricycles were waiting there for hikers to be picked up. After a rigorous hike, we returned to the wash area.

Mt. Maculot - Cuenca, Batangas

The hike was the first time for most of my friends and my girlfriend. I’m proud of ourselves for finishing that challenging trail. It took 9 hours. Despite exhaustion, we felt accomplished. We’ve reached the summit and got down safely, after all that we’ve been through. We don’t conquer exams and homework anymore, we now conquer mountains!

Cuenca is a town in Batangas , on the southern coast of Taal Lake .

Understand [ edit ]

Cuenca formed part of nearby San Jose during the Spanish era until it was separated in 1872. It gets its name from the Spanish word for watershed.

The town's major tourist draw is Mount Maculot . Cuenca has a growing number of private resorts, mostly mid-range to splurge.

Get in [ edit ]

Jam and DLTB provide regular bus trips between Buendia ( Pasay ) or Cubao ( Quezon City ) and Lemery . Fares are about ₱178-196 (₱142-157 for students or seniors). You can also request stops on other spots around town, especially if you will stay in any of the resorts outside Poblacion (downtown).

There is regular jeepney service between Lipa and Lemery , and Cuenca is on the highway used. Among other places, the jeepneys can be found at stands in front of Robinson's in Lipa and next to SM in Lemery.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The town is small enough to be easily walkable, though it is often uncomfortably hot.

See [ edit ]

There is little to see in town.

Climbing Mount Maculot will give you a fine view of Taal Lake with its volcano.

Do [ edit ]

Buy [ edit ].

There is one central market, the 13.89873 121.0505 1 Cuenca Public Market . ( updated Jan 2019 ) at B. Laqui Street. Across the highway beside the market is a lone 7-Eleven store, the only location to buy any fast food. At the start of the Rocky Road trail is a store catering to hikers.

Outside town along the highway to Lipa , there are a number of shops. The larger ones specialize in either plants or pottery; these will be of little interest to most travellers, but those who live in the Philippines may find better prices here than in the cities.

Some of the smaller shops along the highway sell the region's barako coffee ; prices are higher than in town markets. However if you are taking coffee overseas, Customs may be more ready to accept the sealed packages with nicely printed labels that you get here than the unlabelled plastic bags with twist ties from the markets.

Eat [ edit ]

There are numerous eateries serving local dishes, especially the famous Batangas lomi . Cuenca has no fast food chains yet, to avoid competition with eateries and restaurants.

  • 13.901906 121.050926 1 G2B Lomi . Local restaurant specializing in lomi , a noodle dish popular with both locals and foreigners, especially hikers. Their bestseller is "overload lomi ", which is the same lomi dish with lots of toppings, and good for 4. ( updated Jan 2019 )
  • 13.90072 121.0508 2 Lomi-ko Hauz , B. Laqui Street , ☏ +63 930 298-8414 . 7AM-7PM . Serves authentic lomi , favorite by hikers. ( updated Dec 2018 )
  • 13.89838 121.05 3 Tengoku Ramen House , National Highway ( Near Cuenca Central Elementary School ). Cheap ramen and unique fusion dishes in town. ( updated Dec 2018 )

Drink [ edit ]

Sleep [ edit ].

  • 13.885038 121.048656 1 Camp Pulong Gubat Wave Pool Resort , Brgy. Emmanuel ( The road leading to the resort is rather narrow, so large groups using tour buses must walk to the resort. ). Wave pool resort, with cottages and rooms for overnight stays. Entrance fee of ₱150. ( updated Dec 2018 )

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Due to its popularity, Anilao has become the poster image of the municipality of Mabini . It has become synonymous with the town it represents. In reality, however, Anilao is just a barangay and many of the resorts that are often tagged “Anilao” are located in other nearby villages.

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

Tucked in the northern coast of the Calumpang Peninsula, it is one of the areas in Batangas that underwent development ahead of others. Regarded as the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines, Anilao’s rich and colorful underwater scenery attracts visitors more than its shores.

Anilao is also a setting-off point to other attractions including Sombrero Island and Masasa Beach in Tingloy, the only island municipality of Batangas. It is also the jump-off point to Mt. Gulugod Baboy , a relatively easy hike, perfect for trekking beginners. Some hikers head to the beaches to take a refreshing swim after the climb.

The municipality of Tingloy occupies Maricaban Island, making it the only municipality outside mainland Batangas. It’s situated off the tip of the peninsula and sandwiched between Balayan Bay and Batangas Bay.

For a long time, the isolated town has been off the radar until beachgoers heard the news about Masasa Beach , a pristine stretch of fine sand and clear waters. Today, Masasa Beach is one of the most popular attractions in the province, attracting thousands of tourists from Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.

The well-known Sombrero Island, which is often associated with Anilao, is actually part of Tingloy too. Another beach destination in Tingloy is Oscar Beach, sometimes called by the locals as Oscar Island. All these pieces of tropical paradise make Tingloy one of the fastest-rising tourist destinations in the country.

3. Laiya, San Juan

Laiya Aplaya , or simply Laiya, is another seaside barangay that pretty much represents the whole town of San Juan in terms of tourism. In fact, many beach resorts in other parts of the municipality — like those in nearby Barangay Hugom — are also being marketed with the term Laiya in tow to catch more attention or spark interest.

The long and wide stretch of fine light-colored sand harbors numerous resorts and hotels, ranging from budget to high-end. It has become one of the go-to weekend destinations and a venue for events such as company outings and even weddings.

6. Verde Island

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

Verde Island , also called Isla Verde , is nestled in the middle of Verde Island Passage, hailed as the center of the world’s marine biodiversity by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study.

Just 45 minutes off the Batangas mainland, this sleepy fishing island in Batangas City remains undisturbed by tourism as of today. Most tourist amenities and activities are concentrated in Mahabang Buhangin and Cueva Sitio. With very few resorts, homestays, and restaurants, its rugged shores are almost devoid of tourists. But that’s not to say that this breathtaking island has nothing to offer. In fact, it offers something that not many Luzon destinations can provide — some peace and quiet.

Verde Island is perfect for those who are looking for a serene, back-to-basics kind of beach escape.

If you are looking for a unique beach destination n Batangas, the municipality of Lobo is notable for its pebble beaches. Instead of shores covered with fine sands, most of the beaches in Lobo, especially in Malabrigo, are carpeted by smooth pebbles and stones.

This has been my family’s secret summer getaway because we like the less crowded beaches. A few years ago, it was quite challenging to travel to Lobo because some parts of the winding road were not yet cemented. But today, it’s easier to reach either from Batangas City or from San Juan.

Despite the development, it’s still tamer and quieter compared to other more developed coastal towns in Batangas. Most of its patrons seek serenity more than anything. As for me, I like that I don’t have to worry about the sand sticking to my hair or my swimwear. Haha!

My family likes walking to the lighthouse in the morning when we visit for an overnight stay. The Malabrigo Point Lighthouse (Faro de Punta Malabrigo) is a National Historical Landmark. In the past, we can freely explore inside and around the lighthouse, but during our recent visit, we can only admire the lighthouse from the outside. We don’t mind because it also serves as a viewpoint, overlooking the sea and the surrounding areas.

Taal was originally located in what is now the town of San Nicolas near Taal Lake. The former provincial capital was forced to relocate to its present location when the Taal Volcano violently erupted in the mid-18th century.

Although commercialization is apparent, the town center still elicits that strong old town vibe with the well-preserved town hall building and ancestral houses flanking the streets. But the town’s highlight is the Basilica de San Martin de Tours (or simply Taal Basilica ), said to be the biggest Catholic church in Asia. Sitting atop a hill, it definitely commands attention and is an iconic landmark.

If you get hungry, you can try some of Batangas’ signature dishes like the tapang Taal and Taal longganisa . You can order these at Don Juan BBQ near Taal Market, where you can also go food tripping or pasalubong shopping.

If you have more time, you can also check out the Taal-made Barong Tagalong, balisong-making, and Taal embroidery products.

9. Fantasy World, Lemery

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

Most tourists assume that Fantasy World is located in Tagaytay because of the close proximity, higher elevation and the backdrop of the rolling hills, but it is, in fact, in the fringes of the municipality of Lemery in Batangas.

It was supposed to be a magnificent theme park poised to rival Disneyland, but the construction was halted. Today, it remains unfinished but not abandoned. It is operational as a photo spot destination, perfect for those whose flights of fancy are filled with either fairy tales or grim (or Grimm) aesthetics. It is also a popular prenuptial shoot location.

The park and some of the rides, which are not operational, will make you yearn for something that is almost within your grasp but is unattainable. Despite the lack of action, the whole place is still Instagram-worthy. It was also the filming location for movies ( Fantastica , Got 2 Believe ) and TV shows ( Majika ).

The highlight of the park is the towering castle, which was the centerpiece of the plan. If you are not afraid of heights, you can climb to the top of the main tower and admire the view of the park and the surrounding areas.

Opening Hours: As of writing, the management doesn’t allow tourists inside the premises anymore. Some visitors just take photos in front of the gate or from a viewpoint along the road. But in the past, the opening schedule was 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entrance Fee: Presently, it is CLOSED to the public until further notice. The entrance fee used to be P100 per person. Getting There: Ride a jeepney or bus from Olivarez/Rotonda to Boundary (Cavite-Batangas boundary). The fare for the jeepney is P25 and for the bus, P39. From the boundary, ride a jeepney bound for Lemery but tell the driver to drop you off at the side of the road leading to the Fantasy World entrance. The fare is P18. You can also charter a tricycle for a special trip, but the rate is steep — P200 per ride.

✅ MORE INFO: FANTASY WORLD TRAVEL GUIDE!

Lemery also has beach resorts but don’t expect to see white sand. The municipality’s coast is strewn primarily with black volcanic ash. These beach resorts are also a bit far from Fantasy World, which is perched up in the mountains.

10. Views of Taal Volcano

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

As the centerpiece of Taal Lake, it is also described as an island (Volcano Island) within a lake (Taal Lake) within an island (Luzon main island). It is certainly scenic and just watching it from afar can be calming, but don’t underestimate its power. It’s very, very active and has the nastiest fiery mouth.

Before the 2020 eruption, the Volcano Island is accessible to tourists who wish to get to the edge of the crater and marvel at this small but mighty nature’s wonder. While you can admire it from Tagaytay, you can go to Talisay to get closer to Taal Lake.

You don’t need to check in to a ridge-perched hotel to have a good look at the lake and volcano. Several establishments like restaurants and shopping centers offer a magnificent view, including the Twin Lakes complex, which is actually located in Laurel, Batangas, even though it is often touted as a Tagaytay attraction.

Casa de Segunda is a well-preserved ancestral house that echoes the architectural style during the Spanish colonial period. The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian or simply Lipa Cathedral is one of oldest in Batangas and the most visited.

Some of its beaches and sand pockets are nestled within exclusive villages and resorts that require membership, connection, or prior booking to access them. These are Tali Beach Subdivision, Punta Fuego, Hamilo Coast, and Canyon Cove among others.

Known for its ruins of Grecian pillars and statues, which remind visitors of its glorious past, Fortune Island was once a luxurious exclusive resort that closed its doors in 2006.

Go cliff jumping, trek to the lighthouse, take lots of photos, do snorkeling, and even go scuba diving. Have fun under the sun while exploring the whole island. If you are swimming, there are two areas where you can swim — the shallow but rough waters (beach) and the calm but deep waters (cliff-diving area).

If you are into diving, some nearby diving sites are the Blue Holes, the Wreck, and Fortune NW. If a day trip is not enough, you may camp overnight on the island. If so, you can do stargazing and astrophotography!

15. Matabungkay, Lian

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

Matabungkay may sound “old school” now, but it became well-known for a reason. This strip along the coast of Lian has attracted tourists since the 1950s. In its heyday, it was one of the prettiest, most easily accessible beaches from Manila.

Today, of course, a lot has changed. Other beaches have been “discovered” over the years, pushing Matabungkay to the back seat. But although Matabungkay isn’t as popular as the other Batangan beaches, it remains a go-to place for family outings and group excursions among local tourists.

The long stretch of ash-colored sand is lined with resorts, stores, and houses. But its most striking feature is the dozens of iconic floating bamboo raft cottages.

16. Mt. Maculot

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

Maculot in Cuenca is another favorite hiking destination near Manila. Rising over 900 meters asl, Maculot will test your endurance with its steep assaults and rocky features. Aside from the spacious campsite, the other major draws are the summit and the “Rockies”, which both present a picturesque view of Taal Lake, the surrounding towns, and the lush forest.

Take extra precaution when going to the Rockies for photo ops because the wind can get too strong. Crouch or scramble low if you must. Always prioritize safety more than anything else.

If you don’t have a car, Klook is offering a private Maculot day hike tour which covers round-trip transfers from McDonald’s El Pueblo, Ortigas to Mount Maculot, a guide, snacks, and registration fee.

17. Mt. Batulao & Mt. Talamitam

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

Mount Batulao is another famous peak, thanks to its proximity to Manila. This is one of the most scenic hiking destinations that are easily accessible, just a bus ride away, from the capital. The jump-off point, KC Hillcrest (Evercrest), is located close to the border of Batangas and Cavite.

Much of the trail has easy slopes and the assaults are not too steep, save for the ridgeline near the summit, so Batulao is generally recommended for beginners.

What makes the hike challenging is its bareness, with grasslands covering much of the surface. During the summer months, the hike might be difficult because of the lack of shade. But the trail is punctuated by several rest spots.

You and your companions can book a private day hike tour through Klook if no one in your group knows how to drive. The package is inclusive of the private hike, round trip transportation between McDonald’s El Pueblo and Mount Batulao, registration fee, snacks, and a guide.

Neighboring Mount Talamitam might be shorter than Batulao but the hike involves more assault and steeper climb, especially near the summit. You can forgo taking the almost vertical climb to the summit by opting to go for the winding but longer trail, which is usually taken when descending the mountain. The new jump-off point is at Barangay Kayrilaw. Some hikers do a twin hike of Mount Batulao and Mount Talamitam.

18. Taal Lake Yacht Club

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

The Taal Lake Yacht Club sounds fancy and intimidating but it welcomes day tour visitors. Docked on the northern shore of Taal Lake, it can be conveniently reached from Tagaytay via Tagaytay-Calamba road and Ligaya Drive. Prior to the 2020 Taal Volcano eruption, the resort was best known for its volcano trek tour packages.

If such tours are no longer available, you can still enjoy water-related activities like sailing and kayaking. They also rent out Hobie catamaran units. It also allows day trip camping and offers tent rental. But if you have your own tent, you can bring it and just pay for the camping site or tent-pitching fee. It also permits photoshoots — non-commercial and commercial.

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily). The schedule may change without prior notice. Please check the official website or FB page for schedule updates. Entrance Fee (Non-Members): P300/head Rates: P100/day (Camp Site); P500/day (4-Man Tent Rental + P1000 Deposit Fee); P400/day (hut rental, good for 10 pax); P300-350/head (Non-Commercial Shoot); P5000 Royalty Fee + P300-350/head (Commercial Shoot) Contact Details: For corporate events, photoshoots, and other queries, you may contact the management at 0917 838 3726, 0917 123 1403, the official website, and the official Facebook page. Getting There: The most recommended, convenient, and fastest way is via private car. Just take the Tagaytay-Calamba Road and then turn right to Ligaya Drive. Use Google Maps or Waze. The travel time from Tagaytay to TLYC is about 15 minutes.

20. Santo Tomas

cuenca batangas tourist attractions

It’s easy to dismiss Santo Tomas as simply a collection of industrial parks, subdivisions, and farmlands, but it also has a lot to offer to curious visitors.

Santo Tomas takes pride in gifting our motherland with one of its most prominent historical figures — Miguel Malvar , known as the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans during the Philippine-American War. The Municipal Hall is fronted by the commanding Miguel Malvar Shrine and Monument , which pays tribute to the homegrown hero. Housed in an adjacent building is the Malvar Library and Museum , which offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of the revolutionary general.

Another key attraction in Santo Tomas is the National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio, which draws in thousands of visitors — mostly pilgrims and devotees. The shrine complex is also composed of a circular main church, the bell tower, and the Sanctuary of the Relics of St. Padre Pio, just to mention a few.

Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses)

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Hanging Houses are the most emblematic and famous spot in Cuenca. The picturesque Casas Colgadas of Cuenca are reached via the Calle Obispo Valero, built at the edge of a steep cliff overlooking the Huécar River. The houses cling precariously to the cliff side with their balconies projecting over the abyss.

The entire Huécar Gorge originally was lined with hanging houses, but only three of them remain. These remarkable medieval buildings were restored in the early 20th century. The house on the left hand side is known as the Casa de la Sirena (House of the Mermaid).

Address: Calle Obispo Valero

Museo de Arte Abstracto Español

The Museum of Spanish Abstract Art is in one of the Casas Colgadas . Dramatically suspended above a sheer cliff wall, the building has three levels of gravity-defying balconies that jut out over the river gorge. The 15th-century house has been completely renovated but still reveals the original architectural elements, including wooden beam details on the interior.

The museum's exceptional collection focuses on Spanish Abstract paintings and sculptures of the 1950s and 1960s as well as works from the 1980s and 1990s. Visitors are astounded by the originality of the collection along with the variety.

This is one of the largest collections of modern art in Spain after the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. The collection includes more than 700 art works by renowned Spanish abstract artists.

Among the artists represented are Eduardo Chillida, Manolo Millares, Gerardo Rueda, Antonio Saura, Eusebio Sempere, Pablo Serrano, Antoni Tàpies, Gustavo Torner, and Fernando Zóbel.

The museum is open every day of the week except Mondays. Tourists should keep in mind that most museums in Cuenca (including the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art) close from 2pm until 4pm (for lunch/siesta) and are only open for a half day on Sundays.

Address: Casas Colgadas, Cuenca

Catedral de Santa María la Mayor

Dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, Cuenca's impressive cathedral stands proudly on the town's main square. Also known by the name of Nuestra Señora de Gracia (Our Lady of Grace), the cathedral features a mix of Norman and Gothic architectural details. Although the facade was damaged in 1902, the interior has been well preserved.

The richly decorated sanctuary and the 18th-century high altar by Ventura are especially noteworthy, as is the Renaissance arch, the Arco de Jamete. A unique triforium in the ambulatory is unlike any other church in Spain. Two artistic treasures are the 13th-century Mater Dolorosa by Pedro de Mena in the sacristy and a Crucifixion by Yáñez de la Almedina in the Capilla de los Caballeros.

Attached to the cathedral is the Palacio Episcopal (Bishop's Palace). The lower floors of the Bishop's Palace house the Diocesan Museum , which displays the cathedral's exceptional art collection, including the Christ on the Cross and Prayer in the Garden of Olives paintings by El Greco. Other treasures include the 13th-century Byzantine diptych from Mount Athos, exquisite goldsmith's work, elegantly crafted altarpieces, antique liturgical objects, and valuable tapestries.

Bridge of San Pablo over the Huécar River

Among Cuenca's most important landmarks, San Pablo Bridge is one of the most popular, a footbridge originally built in the 16 th century to connect San Pablo convent to the old town over the Huécar River . The current bridge was constructed in 1902 of iron and wood, and those who don't mind heights or a little swaying will enjoy the best possible views of the Hanging Houses .

Another famous Cuenca landmark is Torre de Mangana , also originally built during the 16 th century and renovated many times since. It stands as a symbol of the city, known as the "tower of the hours" thanks to its prominent clock.

Location: Río Huécar, Cuenca

Convento de las Carmelitas Descalzas

This lovely Baroque convent provided a spiritual home for the Carmelite order of nuns in the 17th century. The convent is found at the highest point of Cuenca, with breathtaking views of the UNESCO-listed Huécar River Valley.

The old convent building now houses the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo , a large gallery of modern art that is a surprising juxtaposition in such a historic setting. The museum is part of the Fundación Antonio Pérez , which was founded by Antonio Pérez, an influential poet, editor, and artist.

The museum contains over 3,000 pieces of contemporary art, displayed in 30 different rooms. The collection includes paintings and sculpture, as well as other media. Abstract art and Pop art are well-represented, with pieces by Andy Warhol and Antonio Pérez.

Tourists can still visit the convent's historic church, which houses the marble and bronze tomb of Saint John of the Cross. The church also displays a noteworthy painting by José García Hidalgo.

Address: 20 Calle de Julián Romero, Cuenca

Paleontologists uncovering a dig

The Paleontological Museum of Cuenca boasts an extensive collection of fossils (more than 34,000 items) that were excavated in the Castilla-La Mancha region. The collection of paleontological finds represents the period of 255 million to 550 million years ago.

The museum's dinosaur exhibits are among its most popular, especially with children. Visitors marvel over numerous models of dinosaurs both great and small, as well as information about the ecosystems in which dinosaurs lived.

The museum also features exhibits of long-extinct species like saber-toothed tigers and woolly rhinoceroses, as well as realistic scenes depicting Neanderthal hunters and cave dwellings.

Outside the museum, the Parque Paleontológico (Paleontological Park) is home to the largest of the dinosaur replicas. Visitors will have fun taking a stroll on the grass, among the sculptures of these monstrous ancient reptiles.

Ancient Ruins in Segóbriga

The Museo de Cuenca is near the Casas Colgadas and is a worthwhile stop for tourists interested in archaeology of the Roman era. The collection displays antiquities that were discovered in the area surrounding Cuenca, which had an important ancient Roman settlement.

A highlight of the collection is the first-century marble bust of Lucius Caesar. Other interesting exhibits include the reconstruction of an ancient Roman kitchen and an assortment of antique Iberian dolls.

The majority of the museum's archaeological specimens were discovered at the ancient ruins in Segóbriga, where a first-century to second-century Roman settlement was uncovered. The excavation site includes the ancient city's theater, amphitheater, basilica, and thermal baths.

The museum is open every day of the week except Mondays. From Tuesday through Saturday, the hours are from 10am until 7pm with a long break for lunch/siesta between 2pm and 5pm. On Sundays, the museum is only open from 10am until 2pm.

Address: 12 Calle Obispo Valero, Cuenca

One of Cuenca's coolest "hidden" attractions is found underground. The Túneles de Alfonso VIII are a series of natural tunnels that were expanded over the centuries, to serve as pedestrian passageways beneath the town.

Portions of the tunnels are now open to the public via guided tours (Spanish-language only), during which tourists will learn about their uses as aqueducts and even crypts. The toured parts of the tunnel are well-lit and have wooden walkways that make it accessible to most travelers.

The tour guide explains the tunnels' construction and history, and discusses how the tunnels were used as shelters for townspeople during the Spanish Civil War. Tickets for the guided tours are available at the Cuenca Tourism Office on the Plaza Mayor.

Above the tunnels, the Calle Alfonso VIII is a lovely street lined with multi-story houses featuring brightly painted facades. Especially noteworthy buildings on this street are the 17th-century Casa de los Clemente Aróstegui and the palatial Casa del Corregidor.

Semana Santa celebrations in Cuenca

Each year, Semana Santa is celebrated in conjunction with Easter celebrations, and Cuenca's festivities are known far and wide. During this time, the city comes alive with its festival of religious music, which is marked by not only performances but also a massive parade featuring elaborate floats and costumed performers.

For those who aren't visiting at the end of March and early April, the Semana Santa Museum gives tourists a chance to experience it by way of an immersive audio-visual presentation that showcases highlights of the parade. The museum also houses exhibits of traditional costumes and notable items from the parade's long history.

During Cuenca's Religious Music Week , there are numerous concerts of sacred music performed by world-class orchestras, soloists, and choirs. These are performed at venues including the Catedral de Santa María la Mayor, the Convento de las Carmelitas Descalzas, and the Iglesia de San Miguel.

Address: 13 Calle Andrés de Cabrera, Cuenca

Parador de Cuenca

In a commanding position above the Huécar Gorge and opposite the Hanging Houses, the former Convent of San Pablo has been repurposed as a luxury hotel, part of Spain's national Parador association. The convent was built in the 16th century in Late Gothic style and has been renovated with exquisite attention to detail.

Designed to pamper visitors, the four-star Parador de Cuenca offers plush modern guest rooms and excellent amenities: gorgeous grounds with lush vegetation, an outdoor swimming pool, a charming café in what was the convent's chapel, and a gourmet restaurant in the historic refectory once used by monks.

At the restaurant, tourists can sample the region's traditional cuisine, which features specialties like ajoarriero (cod-potato spread); beans with partridge; Manchego cheese; truffled eggs; and alajú, a confection made with nuts and honey. Guests also enjoy the ambience, whether seated in the elegant dining room or on the pleasant terrace during summertime.

The Parador de Cuenca is located on the outskirts of Cuenca in a dramatic and serene setting. With its sheer walls at the edge of the cliff side, the building seems to sprout from the rocky promontory. The views are sublime, with the Casas Colgadas and the San Pablo Bridge in the distance.

Address: Subida a San Pablo, Cuenca

Oratorio de San Felipe de Neri

Cuenca is home to many historic churches, which will interest tourists because of their religious significance, architecture, and cultural heritage.

Exemplifying Baroque Rococo style, the Oratorio de San Felipe de Neri (on the Calle Andrés de Cabrera) was designed by the architect José Martín de Aldehuela, built in 1739. The plain exterior belies a sumptuous interior with fanciful Rococo details, especially the side chapels and decorative columns with ornate capitals. Tourists can visit during hours of worship: Monday to Saturday at 6:30pm and Sundays/holidays at 11am and 1pm.

The Iglesia de la Virgen de la Luz (also known as San Antón) is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the city's patron saint. This church (on the Calle San Lázaro) dates to the 16th century and was completed in the 18th century, with a splendid Rococo interior in contrast to the austere exterior. A precious object in the church is the Black Madonna, typically found in medieval pilgrimage churches. Tourists may visit Monday to Sunday from 8am to 1pm and 6pm to 8pm.

The scenic walk to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias (on the Bajada de las Angustias) gives visitors the impression of a pilgrimage because of the remote woodland setting. Arriving at this 17th-century shrine, tourists discover a Baroque church dedicated to the diocese's patron saint. It is a custom for visitors to kiss the cloak of the Viernes de Dolores (Friday of Pain) Madonna. The chapel is open to the public for visits every day year-round.

The beautiful San Julian Seminary was built in 1745 on the site of the Palace of the Marquis of Siruela. Tourists can admire the ornate Baroque façade but unfortunately cannot view the interior, as the monument is not open to the public.

A kids' favorite attraction is the Science Museum of Castilla-La Mancha. This fascinating museum takes visitors on a journey to uncover the mysteries of the universe. The museum features plenty of interactive exhibits that keep youngsters engaged.

The museum explores every facet of science, starting with the basics of physics, the "big bang," and earth sciences like geology, biodiversity, meteorology, weather, and climate. The museum also has a strong focus on climate change and energy, exploring clean energy sources.

Other exhibits move out of the atmosphere to the satellites that surround us, and beyond our planet to visit the moon, Mars, and more. Numerous audiovisual exhibits immerse the visitor in exploration of the solar system and even time itself.

Address: Plaza de la Merced, 16001 Cuenca

Monasterio de Uclés

About 70 kilometers from Cuenca, the town of Uclés was founded in the 10th century by the Order of Saint James. During this period, Uclés was the capital of their territory, although the Knights of Saint James later relocated to Malta.

The Monasterio de Uclés was built between the 16th and 18th centuries in the Renaissance style (although the southern facade is Baroque). Decorating the front doors are scallop shells on crosses of Saint James, the symbol of pilgrims who trekked the medieval "Way of Saint James" to Santiago de Compostela . With its double-cloistered courtyard, the building has a sense of serenity and harmony.

In the center of the courtyard is a Baroque wall adorned with the Order of Saint James' coat of arms. The monastery's 16th-century church features a magnificent paneled ceiling and medallion portraits of the Grand Masters of the Order.

The monastery is open to the public for cultural visits with timed passes. Advanced reservations are required.

La Ciudad Encantada (

An incredible geological site is just 36 kilometers from Cuenca by way of the romantic and rugged Valley of Júcar. The scenic drive offers beautiful views of the town and the valley.

La Ciudad Encantada ("Enchanted City") is a stony labyrinth of crags, caves, lakes, and waterfalls, which, with a little imagination, can be seen to resemble a ruined city with its houses and streets and squares. The rock formations are the result of erosion hewn out of the sedimentary rocks, over the course of many thousands of years.

Castillo de Belmonte

The Castillo de Belmonte is one of the most impressive fortresses of the Castile-La Mancha region. Standing on the San Cristobal hill, the 15th-century Gothic-Mudejar castle was constructed for Don Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, for use as his private home.

The imposing medieval castle is shaped like a six-pointed star. Cylindrical towers add to the fairy-tale look.

The castle is open to the public for visits year-round. Tourists love the castle's medieval-themed events, such historical reenactments of 15th-century battles.

First-timers Guide to Mt Maculot in Batangas (Itinerary & Budget)

Joana Paola Gutierrez

With the luring photos of the beautiful Mt Maculot Rockies and photo stunts circulating around the internet, Mt Maculot in Batangas is definitely a famous day-hike in the province. It is located in the heart of Batangas where it is accessible to adventure seekers and hikers. Some of the prominent list of sites and activities are: (1) the rockies , (2) the grotto , (3) rope segments and (4) the summit .

Moreover, since Mt. Maculot is a famous hike, lotsa people go here during summer season where there are clear skies and calm ocean. I came here with my previous office-mates and there were so many people that you could greet along the trail. Although there are other mountains in Batangas, Mt Maculot is particularly a famous mountain to hike because of its astonishing rockies and breath-taking view of the ocean from the summit.

Important Tips & Reminders Before The Hike For First-timers

It wasn’t my first time to climb a mountain since I’ve climbed lots of mountains before. But almost 80% in my team are first-timers! So, below are some important tips I could share with you as I have observed from my group.

  • For updates about COVID-19 travel restrictions , check out the official Facebook page of Cuenca Batangas here .
  • Contact Number: Barangay Outpost +639103172853
  • You have 2 options of climbing Mt Maculot . Firstly, you have a choice to climb only the rockies which is the famous photo-op for this hike. However, it is not the summit of Mt Maculot and it will only take half day to finish it. Second option is rockies-summit-grotto . This is the most difficult and it requires you to start early in the morning and will finish in the late afternoon.
  • Mt Maculot is considered a minor hike since people can conquer the summit in a day. Although it is a minor hike, beginners and first-timers should not underestimate it. It is still considerably difficult and some of the trail includes rope segments. With this being said, bring enough water (at least 2L/pax), trail food and get decent sleep and rest the night before!
  • Wear appropriate clothes f or hiking. For instance, wear dri-fit clothes or light weight clothing. Bring towels, caps, arm warmers and extra shirts too.
  • I would highly recommend overnight ! This will lessen the difficulty since you don’t have to climb up and down the mountain in 1 day.
  • Bring: power-bank, cameras, action camera.

How to Get There

Option 1: diy.

Procced to the bus terminals in in Cubao (MRT3: Cubao; LRT2: Cubao) or Buendia (LRT1: Gil Puyat) then ride a Lemery-bound bus; fare is PHP 150.00 – PHP 160.00; travel time is 2.5 hours.

Alternatively, you may take a bus to Lipa then ride a jeepney to Cuenca; fare is about PHP 30.00. Advise the driver to drop you off at Poblacion (town center) along the highway. From there, you can either walk to the jump-off or take a tricycle for PHP 15.00/person.

Option 2: Booking With Tour Agencies

Booking with travel agencies will be the easiest way to conquer Mt. Maculot. Price range starts from PHP900.00 and above for each person. It is ideal for solo-travelers or for small groups. Check out the travel agencies available on Facebook!

Where to book your tour

Get your private tour with Klook ! Check out the link below.

Meet up with your guide and the rest of your group at McDonald’s El Pueblo in Ortigas, then hop inside an air-condiitoned vehicle to get to Cuenca, Batangas, the jump-off point for Mt. Maculot. Once you arrive, you’ll go through a brief orientation and some last-minute packing, before your guide officially begins the trek!

Suggested Itinerary & Budget

The estimated budget per person for a day-hike is around PHP 600.00 – PHP1,000.00. If you want to lessen the fee, I suggest bringing your water, snacks and packed lunch to avoid buying from stores outside. In addition to that, there are no natural water source during the hike like waterfalls, spring, etc. Best to bring your own enough water and keep yourself hydrated!

Afterward, you can walk around the property and learn about different flowers, plants, and fruits growing here. The tour also includes seeing the bees up close and honey tasting.

Monte Maria is not just a shrine but an international pilgrimage and conference center built in honor of the Virgin Mary. Formally known as Montemaria International Pilgrimage and Conference Center, the complex spans 8 hectares and is situated 20 kilometers outside of Batangas City.

Monte Maria is one of the top Batangas tourist spots because of its uniqueness. It is meant to be both a religious and tourism site. Although devotees and pilgrims are attracted to it, Monte Maria caters to regular tourists as well.

The main landmark of the center is the Virgin Mary Shrine, officially named Mother of All Asia-Tower of Peace. At over 98 meters, this tower is considered one of the tallest Virgin Mary statues in the world. It sits on the top of a plateau, about 148 meters above sea level. Facade of Calaruega Church in Batangas

Caleruega Church is one of the most famous churches in Batangas. This property is perched on the highest hill of Nasugbu Town. Caleruega is named after a Spanish municipality.

Caleruega Church has beautiful architecture and a tranquil natural environment that makes it ideal for religious activities and spiritual retreats. In fact, it has become a well-known wedding venue.

Caleruega is not just a church but a retreat center surrounded by lush scenery. Its main building is called the Transfiguration Chapel. This chapel has a nice colonial design and a peaceful ambiance. This is the most photographed part of the property and where most couples choose to wed.

  • Book a Caleruega Church tour and explore other Tagaytay and Batangas attractions

Aside from the main building, you can visit the other interesting sections of the complex during your visit. Some of these are the Fountain Compass, the Tent Chapel of Transfiguration, St. Dominic’s Point, Kampo Terraces and Amphitheater, and the Dominicum’s grand stairway. Caleruega’s outdoor area also features a koi pond, a Japanese garden, plant nursery, a worm farm, a hanging bridge, and various walkways.

You can visit Caleruega Church on a day trip and spend a couple of hours exploring the property. However, since it’s also a retreat center, Caleruega is equipped with cottages, large halls, and a campsite to accommodate guests who wish to stay overnight.

One of the buildings in Fantasy World, Batangas

Fantasy World was meant to be the Philippine version of Disneyland. It’s supposed to be the largest and grandest theme park in the country. However, this ambitious project has remained unfinished. Fantasy World has never opened as a theme park. According to local stories and rumors, the Japanese owner had financial problems and, therefore, stopped the construction years ago.

Despite being a failed project, Fantasy World is still a favorite Batangas tourist spot and a frequent filming location. Its large fairytale castle, medieval-themed structures, and sad story have managed to attract many tourists.

  • Book a Fantasy World tour to explore this Disneyland-like attraction

You can still access Fantasy World if you pay the minimal entrance fee. But it’s not a functional theme park, so there are no rides or shows. With its intact medieval architecture and lush surroundings, Fantasy World is still very scenic.

While here, you can walk around, enter the fairytale-like buildings and take photos. One popular spot in the abandoned park is the hanging bridge connected to two treehouses. You can climb to the top of the treehouses and enjoy the views of Batangas, including the Taal Volcano.

Fantasy World is located along Diokno Highway in Lemery, Batangas. A local homeowners association is managing and operating the property.

Facade of the Taal Basilica in Batangas

Taal Basilica’s official name is Basilica of St. Martin de Tours. It stands on top of a hill at the center of Taal Town. This basilica is huge; it is 96 meters high and 45 meters wide. It is often referred to as the largest Catholic Church in Asia.

Taal Basilica was reconstructed several times in the 19th century. Its Baroque appearance today is attributed to architect Luciano Oliver, who redesigned the church in 1856.

The church’s main draws are its silver tabernacle and facade, which is comparable to the one at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Taal Basilica’s 26 classical columns at the entrance are indeed an impressive sight!

Taal Basilica is a popular wedding site and a favorite destination of devotees during the Catholic Lenten season.

When you enter, the basilica’s altar size will immediately impress you. This altar is 10 meters wide, 24 meters high, and lined with Doric columns with a Jesus Christ statue at the center.

Taal Basilica is the main building in Taal Park, which has other notable landmarks like the Rizal College and the Escuela Pia: Taal Heritage Center.

Travelers would hike up this famous attraction in a province of famous natural attractions to get a panoramic view of Taal Lake that’s directly adjacent to the mountain. Traversing up and down this 947 meters tall mountain is a challenge, especially to first-time hikers.

Mt Maculot

But the rewards are entirely worth the challenge. There are three main destination points that hikers set as their goal when climbing Mt. Maculot: The Rockies, The Summit, and The Grotto.

The Rockies is a 700-meter tall volcanic rock formation that’s said to be part of Taal Crater’s caldera rim. It’s the first and easiest destination up the mountain and provides the best view of Taal Lake.

Most of the island is still highly uncommercialized with only a few resorts here and there. The island’s most popular beach is Mahabang Buhangin Beach, located on the north-west coast.

But Isla Verde is internationally famous for what lies beneath its waters. The biodiversity of marine life made the island a popular attraction for international divers and is described as the center of marine biodiversity.

10. Lipa City

Located on the eastern side of Taal lake, Lipa City is an urbanized area of Batangas and the most popular to visit out of the four cities in the province. The city offers travelers the opportunity to be immersed in Batangueños cultural heritage just by doing a quick exploration of the city.

13. Caleruega Church

The Caleruega Church in Nasugbu has already been mentioned but it deserves a spot on its own on this list. Sitting atop a hill, the church doesn’t have that much history (built-in 1995) to it compared to other churches in Batangas but its popularity stems from its scenic and tranquil grounds. This makes the church a popular spot for retreats, weddings, pilgrimages, and visitors who just want peace of mind.

The most photographed landmark of the church grounds is probably the Transfiguration Chapel, the beautiful red structure with a brick tower.

Exploring the grounds will provide a tranquil experience even for the non-religious. There are several walkways, sculptures, fish ponds, and other points of worship on the grounds that visitors can come across.

14. Taal Volcano

Despite its dangerous nature, there’s no denying that the Taal volcano makes for a remarkable view. Its location near the middle of Taal Lake makes for a postcard-perfect image. Prior to the 2020 eruption, Taal volcano once held a small lake in its crater with a small islet named Vulcan Point Island.

Today, visitors can only view the volcano at a safe distance. There are several high points in and around Batangas that provide an amazing view of Taal Lake and Taal Volcano.

15. Fantasy World

Located up north in the municipality of Lemery, Fantasy World is an abandoned theme park that’s open for the public to explore. Fantasy Worlds was constructed to be the Disneyland of the Philippines but was left abandoned due to financial problems. The entire theme park is basically a huge medieval castle and a scatter of non-operational rides here and there.

There’s not much to do but visitors have often found bright spots in the abandoned theme park with great photo opportunities.

You can climb the castle tower for a great panoramic view of the area. More beautiful views can be seen by crossing a hanging bridge leading to a treehouse. For those up for it, costumes can be rented for a little bit of roleplaying in a medieval setting.

Batangas: One of the Well-liked Tourist Destinations in the Country

Batangas is a first class province of the philippines located on the southwestern part of luzon in the calabarzon region. its capital is batangas city and it is bordered by the provinces of cavite and laguna to the north and quezon to the east..

Batangas: One of the Well-liked Tourist Destinations in the Country

Batangas is a first class province of the Philippines located on the southwestern part of Luzon in the CALABARZON region. Its capital is Batangas City and it is bordered by the provinces of Cavite and Laguna to the north and Quezon to the east. Across the Verde Island Passages to the south is the island of Mindoro and to the west lies the South China Sea. Poetically, Batangas is often referred to by its ancient name Kumintang.

Batangas is one of the most popular tourist destinations near Metro Manila. The province has many beaches and is famous for excellent diving spots including Anilao in Mabini, Sombrero Island in Tingloy, Ligpo Island in Bauan, these areas more popularly known as Anilao. Matabungkay in Lian, Punta Fuego in Nasugbu, Calatagan and Laiya in San Juan. With its alluring shores, Batangas turns out to be a principal player in the tourism of the Philippines.

Batangas is also where Taal Volcano, one of the Decade Volcanoes is located. It is also where the Taal Heritage town lies, a small picturesque town that has ancestral houses and structures dating back to the 19th century.

The first recorded name of the Province was Kumintang, after the Datu who inherited the dominion from Datu Balensusa. Its centre, the present day Balayan, was the most progressive town of the Province and the traditional centre of governance. Later, as the eruption of the Taal Volcano destroyed a significant portion of the town, the provincial centre was transferred to Taal, which was then called Bonbon and the name of the province was changed after that of the town.

The term batangan means a raft, the people used so that they could fish in the nearby Taal Lake. It also meant the numerous logs found in the Calumpang River, the body of water that runs through the northeastern portion of the town and assumes the shape of a tuning fork.

Physical Features

Batangas is a combination of plains and mountains, including the world's smallest volcano, Mt. Taal, with an elevation of 600 meters, located in the middle of the Taal Lake. Other important peaks are Mt. Makulot with an elevation of 830 m, Mt. Talamitan with 700 m, Mt. Pico de Loro with 664 m, Mt. Batulao with 811 m, Mt. Manabo with 830 m, and Mt. Daguldol with 672 m.

The Municipality of Nasugbu is the home of the plantation of Central Azucarera Don Pedro, the Philippines' largest producer of sugar and other sugarcane products.

Batangas also has many islands, including Tingloy, Verde Island(Isla Verde), Fortune Island of Nasugbu.

Flora and fauna

Although attached to the big Island of Luzon, Batangas boasts of flora and fauna that is distinctively theirs. The local tree malabayabas is endemic to the province alone while the endangered flying fox thrives there without fear. Batangas is also home to the kabag (Haplonycteris fischeri), one of the world's smallest fruit bat. In the Municipality of Nasugbu, wild deers are still inhabiting the remote areas of Baranggay Looc.

But although Batangas has these land flying mammals, marine wildlife remains to be the province's crowning glory. In fact, in the second half of 2006, scientists from the United States discovered that the Sulu-Sulawesi Triangle has its centre at the Isla Verde Passage, a part of the province. According to this study, made by the American Marine Biologist Dr. Kent Carpentier, Batangas Seas host more than half of the world's species of coral reefs. It is also home to dolphins and once in a while, a passage of the world's biggest fish the whale shark or the butanding, as the locals call it. The Municipality of San Juan, as a matter of fact, has a resident marine turtle or pawikan. Pawikans were also prevalent in the Municipality of Nasugbu during the 1970s.

Originally virtually barren, the cathedral has been seeded and restored with coral from other sites. Throngs of eager fish gather around visiting divers waiting to be fed.

This dive site is fairly sheltered. There are no exotic coral formations, but there are plenty of small tropical fish and an interesting drop-off that goes down in graduated steps. A good choice for shallow dives.

  • Layag-Layag Point

There are coral heads teeming with marine life and the water is usually crystal clear.

  • Sombrero Island

Mabini, Batangas

The island’s external appearance resembles the shape of a hat. However, underwater, its profile makes its name sombrero even more appropriate. In certain areas, water is fairly shallow on the rim, down to about 50 feet.

Tingloy Island, Batangas

The rim of the drop-off west-southwest to Sepok Point is a very good dive site, with varieties of marine life.

This area breaks the surface and then drops down to about 80 feet. This is a marvelous area for both wide angle and macro-photography because of the abundant and varied coral formations and fish life.

  • Merriel’s Rock

Tingloy, Batangas

There are types of corals numerous enough to fascinate even a marine biologist.

  • Papaya Point

There is a drop-off topped by a wide variety of coral and inhabited by lots of small reef fish.

  • Verde Island

Batangas City

The most popular dive sites here are the drop-off (0-300 feet) and the remains of a Spanish galleon, which ran aground in 1620.

  • Maricaban / Tingloy

The island contains a cave at 125 feet, accessed by the tunnel, which makes for challenging adventure. There are excellent coral formations, abundant pelagic fish, and other outstanding photographic opportunities.

  • Evercrest Golf Club and Resort

This membership golf club with a resort operates a golf shop and a restaurant that overlooks the beautiful golf course.

  • Calatagan Golf Club

Calatagan, Lian Batangas

The golf club holds a unique distinction: it is located in an arboretum where over 3,000 trees of local and foreign species are planted.

Mountain Climbing and Volcano Trekking

One of the highest and most prominent mountains in the province, Mt. Maculot is one of the favorite sites of mountain trekkers. It is said that the mountain was the last stronghold of the Japanese in the province before they were defeated. Several tunnels built by the Japanese soldiers are present in the area. The name “Maculot” (meaning “kinky”) was derived from the curly-haired aborigines of the place.

  • Taal Volcano

Taal Lake and Volcano in Batangas is Southern Luzon’s centerpiece attraction. The gateway for most visitors is through the town of Talisay or Tagaytay City whose ridge gives a panoramic view of Volcano Island. The volcano is known to be the smallest in the world. Surrounded by a lake, the volcano is situated on an 8.8-kilometer islet, lapped by the 27-kilometer-long lake. Both the lake and the volcano are situated on the crater of an extinct volcano. The Volcano Island is also ideal for trekking.

Batangas City is 2 1/2 hours away from Manila when using the old inter town route. Using the STAR Tollway route, one can reach Batangas City for just 1 1/2 hour. Tanauan City is about 1 hour away and in between Tanauan City and Batangas City, one will find Lipa City. ALPS The Bus, Inc. is one of the many bus companies that travels the said route.

Travellers can take air-conditioned buses in going to Batangas City. Those who want to go to Nasugbu, Calatagan and Lian towns (Matabungkay) can pass via the Tagaytay route.

Travellers going to Puerto Galera can take direct air con buses from Manila (Cubao) to Batangas pier. The best services are BLTB (every hour) and JAM transit (also every hour) from the Kamuin Cubao bus station. Sometimes, esepcially during peak hours, buses run every 30 minutes. The last stop is a Batangas pier (ask the conductor before hand) from where one can take a ferry to [Puerto Galera]

When driving one's own vehicle to Tanauan-Lipa-Batangas City, travelers will pass through the South Luzon Expressway, then the STAR Tollway and can just follow the directional signs along the highway.

For short trips in the desired destinations, passenger jeepneys abound, and then tricycles.

Getting Around

You can use passenger jeepneys to go to different parts of the province, but you can use tricycles for short trips. Tricycles could take you to the exact place that you want to go because jeepneys have routes like buses do. However, tricycles are small and cramped, and could only comfortably accommodate three passengers (2 if the passenger is over six feet tall).

A Minimum rate fare for each passenger for the first kilometer traveled. Senior citizens, students, and differently abled passengers enjoy a discount for each.

Visit the Cuenca, Batangas page for all information on Cuenca.

Cuenca, a town in Batangas is known for its panaderos (bakers) and best known with the tasty tinapay (bread) that these panaderos bake. With these, the local Government of Cuenca organized a festival called the “Tinapayan” where  most bakers in town show workmanship at its best in “Tinapay Festival,” for the celebration of good tidings for the feast of San Isidro Labrador.

This 2009, Tinapayan festival will have its year 3 this coming June.   Townsfolk are sure to decid a more festive celebration with a bread parade, which will showcase creativity and talent of Cuencano bakers. Last year they had a lavishly “breaded” caravan pulled by a water buffalo by the Ang Tinapayan Bakery won then the first place in the parade.

Meanwhile, Cuenca also portrays  ala-Pahiyas of Lucban, Quezon with the house-decoration contest using bread as ornaments.

In a statement made for Manila Bulletin,  Cuenca Mayor Enrique M. Comia said, “”Other towns and cities in the country like Cebu, for instance, has its otap and Bulacan has its ensaymadas. We want a product that will be known to come only from Cuenca,”

This is why last year, the most anticipated competition was the Wow! Pasalubong Award, a bread-baking contest aimed at producing a product that is distinctly Cuenca. The Department of Tourism has expressed its support for the project.

Mayor Comia added that in the case of Cuenca, such a product will not be difficult to produce as most bakers operating in Metro Manila hail from the town, earning its moniker “Home of the Bakers.”
