"MJ" arrives in Denver, reviving Michael Jackson's iconic music and dance on stage

By Dillon Thomas

April 10, 2024 / 7:43 AM MDT / CBS Colorado

One of the most popular musicals on tour has arrived in Denver, as "MJ" the musical prepares to play the Buell Theatre through April 28. The show follows the journey of Michael Jackson's life, from childhood to his creation of The Dangerous World Tour. While the music shines throughout the two and a half hour performance, Jackson's iconic dance moves are also fully on display.

MJ: The Musical

Cast members, like Jamaal Fields Green, have the difficult task of trying to recreate Jackson's iconic dance moves on stage any given night.

"It is Michael Jackson, it is as important as it gets," Fields-Green said. "There's pressure for sure, with an icon as big as he was and still is."

Fields-Green and his peers learned how to imitate Jackson as best as possible thanks, in-part, to their opportunity to learn from Jackson's choreographers, Rich + Tone Talauega. The duo worked directly with Michael Jackson during some of his tours and were able to give their insight to those on the MJ cast to make sure audiences get a near-authentic experience to a Michael Jackson concert.

Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, MJ brings Jackson back to life on stage.

JoJo Carmichael, swing and assistant dance captain, said she always aspired to dance with Jackson.

"I would have loved to be a tour dancer with Michael Jackson," Carmichael said.

Though Jackson died before Carmichael had the opportunity to complete her dream, she said she was thrilled to be able to share what she has learned with other younger generations.

"I think I definitely am carrying on his legacy. Teaching his moves does help carry on the legacy of Michael Jackson and MJ the musical," Carmichael said. "I don't take that lightly."

Carmichael and some of her fellow cast and crew from MJ get the opportunity to teach some of Jackson's moves to students around the country.

Ahead of the show's stop in Denver, Carmichael spent time teaching students from Salt Lake School of the Arts how to dance to Michael Jackson's hit song, "Smooth Criminal."

"To be able to share this gift, it is a dream come true," Carmichael said. "We learn Michael Jackson and his influences in his dance."

Teens like Shayne Souvall and Gray Henry never got to see Jackson perform live, but are still big fans.

"I grew up listening to Michael Jackson a lot. I used to choreograph dances to 'Man in the Mirror' in the backyard," Henry told CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas.

During an exclusive advanced preview, and behind the scenes tour, of MJ, Thomas was able to watch as Carmichael taught students one of the most rapid dances in Smooth Criminal.

"(Learning this from the cast) is super fun and crazy, because we don't get to meet the swings often," Henry said.

The students started out slow, learning the hand motions to the dance. Then, they slowly started learning the steps at a slowed down pace before trying it with music.

"I really like how upbeat it is," Souvall said.

"It was so hard and challenging," Henry said. "It was funny because we all laughed and were like oh, we didn't realize it was that fast."

Carmichael said it is just as difficult to teach the dance as it is to learn it.

"Whew. To do it is a challenge and a push in itself, and teaching it is just as hard," Carmichael said.

After watching the students learn the dance and perform it multiple times, the cast and crew of MJ offered Thomas the opportunity to learn the same dance.

"The dancing is super important to nail. A lot of practice, for sure," Fields-Green said.

Thomas, who has no educational or professional dance experience at all, agreed to give it a humble try. And, in doing so, was humbled by the difficulty.

"What would you say I am in for?" Thomas asked Henry and Souvall.

"A treat. A big one. A really hard fast treat," they collectively said. "Just don't stick your body up really high. Stay really grounded, because the movement is fast. Move with efficiency," Henry said.

Dance Supervisor Justin Prescott joined Fields-Green in teaching Thomas all of the dance moves.

"I remember being five (years-old) and doing Smooth Criminal," Prescott said.

Though it took a while to learn the dance, Thomas eventually managed to get enough of it down to be able to say he did it. But, fortunately for the audiences, the professionals will be the ones doing the dance on stage.

But the students who learned the dances from MJ said they were inspired to keep pursuing dance and the performing arts.

"It really proves and shows us it is possible. It takes a lot of work and dedication and drive. But, it really is possible," Henry said.

"It shows you that you really can do it, you can achieve it. If you believe in yourself, anything is possible," Carmichael said.

4 months after emergency craniectomy, Hayley Erbert cleared to join Derek Hough on dance tour

‘what a blessing (and surprise) it is to be able to be back on stage dancing with my love after such a crazy past four months,’ erbert shared in a recent instagram post.

Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert at the Media Center during the third ceremony of the Television Academy's Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

By Lottie Elizabeth Johnson

A few months after being diagnosed with a cranial hematoma and undergoing an emergency surgery to remove a part of her skull, Hayley Erbert has been cleared to rejoin her husband, “Dancing With the Stars” judge Derek Hough , on the couple’s Symphony of Dance Tour .

“What a blessing (and surprise) it is to be able to be back on stage dancing with my love after such a crazy past four months,” Erbert shared in a recent Instagram post. “My healing journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and being able to dance again is igniting my soul in all the ways; speeding up my recovery even more.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hayley Erbert Hough (@hayley.erbert)

Here’s a look at Erbert’s recovery process — and what to expect from the tour, which starts again on April 14 and makes a stop at the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City on May 15.

Hayley Erbert will join Derek Hough on Symphony of Dance tour

Erbert and Hough, who married last August, have regularly updated fans in the months since Erbert “ became disoriented ” during a December tour stop and was rushed to the hospital.

Since Erbert’s cranial hematoma diagnosis, there have been surgeries, holiday celebrations , an Emmy win and an up-and-down recovery process that is ongoing.

“It’s been wild — I mean, going from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows,” Hough said in a video posted in February , sitting alongside Erbert. “But I had to say, throughout this experience, this woman has been unbelievable, and her perseverance and her acceptance of the whole situation, her strength, it’s been remarkable to witness firsthand. She really is a miracle, and it’s been miraculous — and it’s still a journey.”

“To this day, I still have really good days and I have really bad days, emotionally and physically sometimes.” Erbert added, per Deseret News . “But I’m doing so much better every single day, like truly there is so much progress every day, and I’m so grateful for that.”

Now, a couple of months later, Erbert is looking forward to going back on the road.

“I am so appreciative of the doctors who have supported me in my decision to dance again and my team of specialists that have been assembled to assure that my health and safety is priority,” Erbert shared in a recent Instagram post. “I cannot wait for you all to see this show! It was so meaningful when we opened last year and now, after everything that has happened, it is truly even more special.”

About the Symphony of Dance tour

The Symphony of Dance tour had a few more weeks left when it got put on hold last December.

The string of rescheduled and new dates has a limited run from April 14 through May 19, according to Hough’s official website . New shows include a return to the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Hough grew up and first developed a passion for dance , the Deseret News previously reported.

The tour covers everything from ballroom and tap to salsa and hip-hop, per Hough’s website , and has also included a choreographed version of the couple’s wedding dance.

“Every time we rehearse it, I cry,” Hough previously told USA Today ahead of the tour. “If we get over-frazzled, we take a moment where we just look into each other’s eyes and say, ‘I love you.’ When I hear those words, it’s like juice; I feel unstoppable.”

Derek Hough, Hayley Erbert announce Hayley will return to Symphony of Dance tour after craniectomy

“We cannot wait to dance together again," Hough said.

"Hi everyone, I am so excited to announce that I have been cleared to rejoin the Symphony of Dance tour and I will be dancing when the tour begins on April 14 in Melbourne, Florida," Erbert said.

"We cannot wait to dance together again on stage and be back with all of our fans and thank them," Hough added. "Thank you all for the amazing support that you've shown during this time, so we cannot wait and we'll see you very very soon."

Additional dates were added to the tour in February with stops in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Cedar Park, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, Los Angeles, California, and more. The tour will have a final tour stop in San Diego, California, on May 19.

Symphony of Dance features high-energy choreography and stunning stage production. According to a press release, the show also features different ballroom styles including tap, salsa, hip-hop and more. Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo, also known as NappyTabs, co-created, directed and supervised choreography for the tour.

The announcement comes four months after Erbert was taken to the hospital at the end of their Symphony of Dance tour performance in Washington, D.C., in December 2023.

Hough said in a message on Instagram at the time that Erbert "became disoriented" and "was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel that required an emergency craniectomy," a type of brain surgery typically performed in emergency situations, which relieves pressure on the brain, according to StatPearls , an online library published in the National Library of Medicine.

Presales for new dates and on sales for rescheduled dates start 12pm local time on February 14, with general on sale for the new dates in most markets following on Friday, February 16, at 10am local at www.derekhough.com . VIP packages are also available giving fans the chance to purchase premium tickets, including pre-show parties and meet and greet opportunities.

Derek Hough Symphony of Dance is produced by Greg Young of Mojave Ghost, a Tony & Drama Desk Award nominated producer. He’s produced award-winning Broadway shows (Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, The Illusionists, Little Women), Las Vegas Residencies (Derek Hough No-Limit!, Donny Osmond).

Emmy Award winning and New York Times Best-Selling author Derek Hough started dancing in his hometown of Salt Lake City, UT, at age 11. Just one year later, he moved to London to live and train with the top dance coaches in the world and attend the prestigious Italia Conti performing arts school where he studied theatre, music, and dance.

As a three-time Emmy Award winner and twelve-time nominee, Hough is the most nominated male choreographer in Television Academy history.  Hough has also appeared in film, television, and stage projects as an actor.  He made his feature film debut for director Duane Adler and producer Robert Cort in the feature film Make Your Move and had a recurring role on the ABC series Nashville and in High School Musical The Musical for Disney+ .  His stage performances include Radio City Music Hall’s Spring Spectacular co-starring alongside the Tony Award winning Laura Benanti and the critically acclaimed production of Footloose in which he starred as the male lead in London’s West End.  In December of 2016, Hough starred with Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Martin Short and Harvey Fierstein in NBC’s Hairspray Live!

In 2020, Hough joined the hit ABC series Dancing with the Stars as part of the judging panel alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Toniolo.  A multi-talented entertainer and the only six-time champion in franchise history, Hough had previously performed on the show as a pro-dancer.  His mirror ball wins came with celebrity partners that included Brooke Burke, Jennie Garth, Ricki Lake, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Grey, Kellie Pickler, Amber Riley, Amy Purdy and Bindi Irwin.

In May of 2017, Hough joined Jennifer Lopez and Ne-Yo at the judges table for the NBC series World of Dance .  The show, which he was part of for 4 seasons, launched as the highest rated summer show in over ten years and was unparalleled dance competition that featured solo artists competing against duos and crews in all genres of dance, including hip hop, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, and more competing for a million-dollar prize.

Hough can also add best-selling author to his list of credits.  His memoir Taking the Lead; Lessons from a Life in Motion  hit stands in August of 2014 and rapidly was named to the prestigious New York Times Best-Seller list during two non-consecutive time periods, a rare feat.

Hough completed his first solo national tour, Derek Hough Live: The Tour in 2019 during which he performed in nearly 60 cities around the country. Prior to that, Hough and his sister Julianne teamed for a live stage dance concert MOVE Live on Tour performing in 50 cities around the country, in 2015 they toured again selling out scores of venues on their 47-city outing.  In 2017 they again performed a sold-out tour of 48 cities around the United States with their show Move – Beyond – Live on Tour .

In 2021 and 2022, Hough headlined his residency Derek Hough: No Limit in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada.  The critically acclaimed dance-centric show at the Venetian Resort takes fans on a journey through a true fusion of dance and music, as Hough explores styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa, hip-hop and everything in between.

'DWTS' pro Derek Hough calls wife's recovery from emergency skull surgery 'nothing short of a miracle'

'Dancing with the Stars': Derek Hough talks about his bromance with guest judge Michael Bublé

Derek Hough applauded Michael Bublé as a DWTS guest judge while telling Fox News Digital how their ‘bromance’ started after Hough directed one of Bublé's music videos.

"Dancing with the Stars" pro Derek Hough is proud of his "miracle wife."

Hough opened up to Fox News Digital about Hayley Erbert's emergency skull surgery in December and the miraculous recovery that has led her back to the dance studio.

Hough explained that the medical professionals who aided Erbert were looking for more severe, permanent damage after her emergency craniectomy and her cranioplasty a few weeks later , but they couldn't find anything.

"It's nothing short of a miracle, honestly," he said. "Both Hayley and I've shared our gratitude towards the medical professionals and everybody that was just so on top of their game and just did the best they could and did an incredible job."

He also thanked his fans for "the love and support" during this "scary" health journey he was on with his wife. The couple tied the knot in August 2023.

"Hypothetically or even metaphorically, we felt this beautiful energy from everybody, and it was really special," Hough told Fox News Digital.

The aspect of Erbert's health journey that has proved to be the biggest struggle for Hough was the memory of those scary moments when everything was uncertain.

"I think that each day there's a win, there's a triumph, there's a step forward. I think the hardest thing is reliving some of those moments. They kind of creep up and pop up in your head. I think they're so difficult," he explained.

In December, Erbert became "disoriented" after performing and needed to be hospitalized. She was then diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy.

According to the Mayo Clinic, "an intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood within the skull. It's usually caused by a blood vessel that bursts in the brain."

Hough's Symphony of Dance Tour , which Erbert joined as a featured dancer, was postponed because of her medical scare. The show resumes April 16 in Tampa, Florida.

"The audience can expect a fast-paced, energetic, just dance spectacle, with athleticism, artistry," Hough told Fox News Digital. " The music is very dynamic. There are so many different genres of music – everything from big band music to rock ‘n’ roll to old Hollywood to contemporary.

"I think that even if you're not a fan of dance, you're going to enjoy the show just based off of the music, the energy that's created in the room. It really is something special."

Hough noted there's a "possibility" his wife will be joining him on stage during his summer tour.

"She's doing amazing," he said of Erbert's recovery.

Erbert recently took to Instagram to share a video of her dancing with Hough while she's still in recovery.

Hayley Erbert is returning to the dance floor after a trying health battle. The 29-year-old dancer and wife of Derek Hough will waltz together again on the Symphony of Dance Tour following her traumatic brain injury and subsequent surgeries.

"I am so excited to announce that I have been cleared to rejoin the Symphony of Dance Tour and I will be dancing when the tour begins on April 14," Hayley shared on Friday's Good Morning America .

A smiling Derek added, "We cannot wait to dance together again on stage and be back with all our fans and thank them, thank you all for the amazing support that you have shown during this time."

"What a blessing (and surprise) it is to be able to be back on stage dancing with my love after such a crazy past four months," Hayley captioned an Instagram video. "My healing journey has been nothing short of extraordinary and being able to dance again is igniting my soul in all the ways; speeding up my recovery even more. I am so appreciative of the doctors who have supported me in my decision to dance again and my team of specialists that have been assembled to assure that my health and safety is priority. I cannot wait for you all to see this show! It was so meaningful when we opened last year and now, after everything that has happened, it is truly even more special. 🤍"

Hayley was  rushed to the hospital  on Dec. 6 after she became "disoriented" during a performance on the couple's tour stop in Washington, D.C. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel, which required an emergency craniectomy. That injury ultimately led to another  invasive and painful surgery , which replaced  a large portion of her skull .

Derek paused the dance tour in the wake of his wife's struggles, and shared with ET in February that he initially wasn't sure whether Hayley would be able to return to the dance floor.

"She's doing amazing," he told ET at the time. "She really is. I can't say enough, I really can't, how inspiring she is."

He added, "She's doing better each day. There are still some things we need to sort out, but even now, when I look back at where we were just a couple of months ago to where she is now, it's miraculous. It really is."

Prior to the couple's announcement, Derek told ET of the upcoming return to the tour, "Her presence will always be there. We're not really there yet to see what the involvement is physically, but yeah, she's always there."

As for what Derek is most looking forward to when the show returns, the 38-year-old  Dancing With the Stars judge previously said, "I just love it. I love seeing people face to face. I love giving them big hugs and dancing with them and answering their questions. I feel like even that was really helpful during this whole process."

Iconic band announce anniversary tour more than 20 years after earworm hit single

Rick J Jordan, H. P. Baxxter, and Ferris Bueller of Scooter.

Get your raving shoes on – Scooter are back with a massive comeback tour hitting venues across the UK.

The German techno band – made up of H. P. Baxxter, Marc Blou, Jay Frog, and Jens Thele – are embarking on their 30th-anniversary tour later this year with shows in London , Manchester , Birmingham , Newcastle, Dublin, Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Cardiff.

It comes more than 20 years after the release of their smash hit single The Logical Song, originally by Supertramp, which reached number 2 in the UK Singles Charts.

Tickets for the shows go on pre-sale on Wednesday, April 10, at 10am, followed by general sale on Friday, April 12 also at 10am.

The tour coincides with the release of the band’s milestone 21st studio album Open Your Mind and Your Trousers, including singles Rechno is Back, Rave & Shout, Waste Your Youth, and For Those About To Rave.

Scooter kicked off the mammoth tour in Germany last month, with it continuing through Europe until the group arrive on UK shores in October and November.

Rick J Jordan, H. P. Baxxter, and Ferris Bueller of Scooter.

The four-piece formed in 1993 and has sold a whopping 30 million records to date, earning more than 80 gold and platinum music awards/

They have landed 23 top ten hits, and are considered the most commercially successful German single-record act.

Scooter have produced several well-known singles across the world, including Hyper Hyper, How Much Is the Fish?, Maria, Jumping Over The World, and The Question Is What Is the Question?.

They released The Logical Song in 2001, which became the band’s highest-charting single of their career and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

It was the 15th best-selling single of 2002 and was one of the anthems synonymous with rave culture in the 2000s.

Scooter’s music – especially their wacky lyrics that have experienced plenty of praise on TikTok – as well as their wild outfits, Baxxter’s luminous bleach blonde hair, and pyrotechnic-filled performances have seen them become household names across the globe.

Rick J Jordan, H. P. Baxxter, and Ferris Bueller of Scooter.

Speaking to City Magazine in 2019, vocalist Baxxter reflected on the impact Scooter have had on the electronic music industry.

‘I’ve always loved bands with strong stage presence. When I was a teenager listening to hard rock, I loved Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, who destroyed his guitar at every concert.

‘Even then, I knew it was a staged part of the show, but that didn’t diminish the excitement I felt when he smashed it. When I think about the pyrotechnics we used on the first tours, compared to today’s explosive shows, I just smile.’

Speaking about their legendary live shows, he continued: ‘At one point we were spending more on pyrotechnics than we could make in tickets, but we could afford it because the shows were selling massive amounts of records.

‘Every single we put out went gold or platinum, and then all of a sudden, albums started selling. Of course, this has completely changed, but fortunately, pyrotechnics have also become cheaper and we don’t have to dwell on it.’

Hayley Erbert Opens Up About Returning to Tour with Husband Derek Hough After ‘Traumatic’ Health Crisis (Exclusive)

"She's all clear and we're all just amazed by her and can't wait to go out there and put on a great show and an emotional show," Hough tells PEOPLE

Just four months after undergoing an emergency craniectomy , Hayley Erbert will rejoin her husband, Derek Hough , on tour.

The married couple announced on Friday, April 5, that they will dance together again on the Symphony of Dance tour , which will pick back up in Melbourne, Florida, on April 14.

"I am just so excited to get back out and dance again after having something so traumatic happen," Erbert, 29, tells PEOPLE.

Derek Hough/ Instagram

In December 2023, the So You Think You Can Dance alum was rushed to the hospital following a tour performance in Washington, D.C., where she was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel.

Weeks after undergoing a craniectomy, she underwent cranioplasty surgery  to  "replace a large portion of her skull"  that was removed during the procedure. As her recovery process began , Hough, 38, postponed the tour to be by her side.

When he announced new tour dates in February , it was unclear if Herbert would be joining him for the performances.

She tells PEOPLE that what she has experienced these past few months makes being able to go back on a tour even better.

"Dance has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and so I'm just really excited to get out there and do what I love and also to see the people that have supported me throughout this entire healing journey," Erbert says.

Hough says that while the speed of Erbert's recovery has made them "excited" and "grateful," they are being mindful about not rushing anything.

"We've had extensive conversations and tests and results from different doctors," Hough says. "Every kind of doctor that you can think about from our original surgeon who did the surgeries to new people in our lives and they are very supportive."

The Dancing with the Stars  judge adds that Erbert has an "amazing team" surrounding her that is making sure she is "good and healthy."

"She's all clear and we're all just amazed by her and can't wait to go out there and put on a great show and an emotional show," Hough adds.
