Symi is a picturesque harbour town characterised by its neoclassical buildings, painted in soft pastels, providing a postcard-perfect backdrop to the port.

I’d recommend a visit to the Grand Bazaar which offers a shopping extravaganza, with a plethora of stalls selling everything from Turkish delight to intricate carpets.

For a respite, the beach promenade or numerous seaside eateries offer places to relax and indulge in local cuisine.

Top tours to book: From Rhodes: Butterfly Valley and Chalki Island Day Trip

Halki is accessible from Rhodes by ferry. The journey time varies from 50 minutes to 2.5 hours.

Halki, also known as ‘the island of peace and friendship’, is the epitome of tranquillity. As a non-touristy destination, I think it’s perfect for a peaceful day trip from Rhodes.

Halki

The island’s sole village, Emborio, is both quaint and charming with its pastel-coloured houses and quiet beaches.

Explore the ruined mediaeval castle atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. The Monastery of St. John and the Church of St. Nicholas are also worth visiting.

With pristine beaches like Ftenagia and Pontamos, Halki is perfect for those seeking relaxation and serenity.

15. Kastellorizo

Kastellorizo, Greece’s easternmost island, is accessible by a direct flight from Rhodes, which takes about 30 minutes. Alternatively, ferries also operate, taking around 3-4 hours.

Or continue as guest, fethiye rhodes ferry.

To Rhodes from Fethiye is a day trip in Greece, a one-day round trip by catamaran.

The distance from port to port is about 80 km, and the journey takes about an hour and a half one way. So take advantage of our offer and experience the unique atmosphere of Greece. So what is there to see in Rhodes?

Rhodes is not just a historical and beautiful place; it is a unique island that has belonged to many empires. Just imagine. It has been inhabited since Neolithic times. As early as XVI B.C., it was inhabited by the Minoans and Mycenaeans, the Dorians and the Carians, the Persians and the Greeks, the Persians and the Greeks again, and then the Macedonians. It was ruled by the Arabs and then by the Byzantine Empire. After that, it was reigned by the Knights Hospitallers, then by the Ottomans, the Italians, the British and finally by Greece. No other island has such a rich and varied history.

The island is famous for one of the wonders of the ancient world, the Colossus of Rhodes, a giant statue that used to greet people arriving at the port. Rhodes was home to many famous orators, poets and astronomers of antiquity. The Palace of the Grandmasters (the Rhodes Fortress) and many other monuments of art and architecture are also famous worldwide. The whole historic part of the island is listed as a World Heritage Site and is protected by UNESCO. The architecture of the cities of Rhodes is remarkable. The Valley of Butterflies, the ruins of the ancient town of Kamir, the acropolis, the ancient churches and monasteries are also of great interest.

Besides visiting Rhodes town, tourists come here for the local products. They traditionally buy handbags, shoes or accessories made of genuine leather, cosmetics based on olive oil, fine jewellery and, of course, the famous Greek wicker sandals. These shoes are very durable, comfortable to wear and yet relatively inexpensive.

Sailing to Rhodes takes place daily in the mornings from early April to the end of November. An auto-transfer arrives at the hotel around 07:30 am. The tour price includes both transfers (from and to the hotel), sailings in a vast comfortable catamaran, port customs fees and insurance. As Rhodes is part of Greece, you must have a visa to visit this country. You will have approximately 5.5 hours of free time in Rhodes. To get through passport control, you need to be at the port of Rhodes around 16:20. We will bring you to your hotel before 20:00.

Fethiye Rhodes Day Trip

Imagine being able to visit two countries in one holiday.  From the Fethiye region it is possible to visit Rhodes, the capital of the Greek Dodecanese islands, and all in one day!  Rhodes is approximately 50 from Fethiye coastline and is most certainly ‘doable’ in one day.

The ferry takes you into the heart of Rhodes Town.  At the very tip of the island, Rhodes Town is the capital.  It is a very small city comprising of the old and the new town.  The walled Old Town was mostly built by the Knights Templar,  in the 14th century and retains much of its original architecture.

The new town has grown up alongside the walls of the old city, incorporating old and new, Turkish, Greek and Venetian architecture, lending the city to be of such diversity and almost unique among the Greek Islands .  It may be fair to say that Rhodes has its own multinational ambience, maybe due to its location for passing trade as an Eastern Mediterranean Island.

Invaders and pirates have left their indelible mark on Rhodes.  Todays invaders are the tourists, whether daily or fortnightly, welcomed with open arms by the friendly Rhodian people,

With so much to see and do on the island, you arrive at the Port on the outskirts of the walled ancient city.  The easiest entry into the walled town is through St Mary’s Gate, situated opposite a small crescent shaped beach as you turn right coming out of the port.  Here you will see the ruined byzantine church of St Catherine, sitting among other ancient buildings and you can turn right here in the shadows of the walled town towards the Square of the Jewish Martyrs.

This is where ancient history meets modern history.  In this square of ancient Rhodian buildings, the Jewish population were gathered, towards the end of the second world war, and herded to three ships in the port that took them to Auschwitz Concentration Camp, and for most of them, certain death.   The names of the families and the victims are entered on a black stone obelisk at the centre of the square today, close to the three seahorse fountain that is a monument to the martyrs that gave this square its name.  The ancient synagogue is still in use today.

Essentially a visit to Rhodes is all about discovering the Templars city, but there is also excellent shopping in the new town, with many designer names to enjoy, so easy to do with its close proximity to the ancient walled town.

Fethiye Rhodes Day Trip

Fethiye Rhodes Day Trip Itinerary

You will be picked up by transfer bus between the times of 07:00 and 07:30 according to location and taken to the port in Fethiye where you will go through customs and board in time for the ferry to depart.

The fast and comfortable catamarans go every day throughout the summer season, which is from April to November.  Departure times are 08:30 from Fethiye – arriving in Rhodes Town port at approximately 10:10 (a journey time of around 1 hour 40 minutes).  Catamarans are quick, comfortable with W.C. and a bar on board for snacks.

Return from Rhodes to Fethiye is 17:00 arriving back at Fethiye around 18:40.  Your journey may vary by a few minutes either way, depending on marine conditions.

Please note that you should be at your port of departure, Fethiye or Rhodes, half an hour before scheduled departure time.  Times of departure may vary, your Captain will inform you on board of your time to leave if it is any different.

Upon arrival at the port in Fethiye your transfer bus will be waiting to take you back to your accomodation.  You should expect to be back at your hotel at around 20:00 at the latest.

What to do in Rhodes?

Your time on the Island is classed as free time.  There are a number of activities you can choose to do. The Old Town offers so much to see, right on your doorstep, and many people do not venture further.  Should you decide to do so, the ancient monastery of Tsambika or the Valley of The Butterflies are a short taxi or bus journey away from the city and the port, as is the ‘Epta Piges’ or seven springs from whence the island’s water supply springs.

A visit south of the city, either by bus or taxi, will take you to Kalithea Spa, where Hitler intended to modernise the ancient Spa as an R&R base for his troops.  Thankfully he never got round to it and the ancient buildings remain for you to enjoy.

Further down the coast is the ancient town of Lindos, with its Templar fortress dominating the overlook, and the ancient Temple of Athena enclosed within.  A climb not for the faint hearted and, really only advisable to travel to and from by taxi in the course of a day.  The bus service may be haphazard and buses fill up quickly on the  island.

With so much to see in Rhodes Town itself, you would be forgiven for not venturing beyond the high walls.  On foot you can discover the city and its hidden gems.  An open doorway to a 15th century courtyard can reveal something as modern as a childs pushbike.  In the same way, stop and look over the lower walls, you may discover, in a medieval cobbled street, an ancient temple to the old Gods, lying undisturbed in the sunshine.

All of this and shopping too, with a plethora of Rhodian artefacts and antique shops for your pleasure, you will be glad you brought your purse.

How much is Fethiye Rhodes Day Trip?

Cost of Rhodes Day Trip from Fethiye is 55 € for adults, 35 € for children between age 3 and 6, 5 € for children under 35 years old in 2024.

Where is the best to get some lunch?

As if you have not been treated visually and sensually to the island, the cullinary delights are second to none.  From a simple pitta gyros (basically a meat kebab served in pitta bread) to a meal of spit roast Rhodian lamb, your taste buds will thank you for making this trip.  Greek Yoghurt and fresh herbs only enhance the experience, or why not try Mitos the locally produced beer.  Just beware of those Greek boot shaped glasses, a large one is the equivalent to two pints!

What does my ticket price include?

Your transfer is included from Oludeniz, Ovacik and Hisaronu to the port of Fethiye and on your ticket it will state your pick up time from your hotel.

Are there any extras?

Any food or refreshments you choose to purchase, museum entries on Rhodes where applicable, travel fares in the island, and any sundries you choose to buy throughout the day.

What should i bring with me?

The old town of Rhodes still enjoys its cobbled streets, for this reason we recommend you bring not only good footwear but anything with a thicker sole to negotiate the cobbles.  Rhodes Town can be walked around in the course of a day, bear this in mind.

Bring your sunglasses and suncream, although the temperature is around 10 degrees cooler than the Turkish coastline, it can still be extremely hot.

Bring some money with you, there is ample opportunity to spend as little or as much as you like on this sunshine island.

Do i need my passport?

Don’t forget to bring your passport and any travel documents you used to travel to Turkey!  You are, after all, heading into another country, and it is easy to forget you need your passport to travel.

How To Visit The Greek Islands From Turkey In One Day

Although there are several options—some easier than others—most people will consider visiting the Greek islands while holidaying on the Turkish south coast. In that case, you have two destinations to choose from: Rhodes and Kos.

Both are beautiful islands in their own right, and you can choose to either stay a few nights or visit for the day, eat a Greek lunch , and take the ferry back to Turkey in the early evening. Yes, that might be a rather long travel day , but it’s completely worth it!

Bodrum To Kos

There is a daily ferry to Kos during the summer months if you’re in Bodrum or any surrounding areas, such as Gumbet or even up to Kusadasi. During the winter months (mid-October to mid-April), the ferry is less frequent, and the crossing is more likely to be choppy. The ferry may also be canceled at short notice during poor weather – those Mediterranean winter storms can be nasty!

However, if you’re visiting in the summer , you’re unlikely to run into poor weather because rain is almost non-existent during the peak months! The crossing takes just under an hour, and there are usually two crossings in the morning and two heading back in the evening. Check the last crossing times, though, because if you miss it, you’re stuck on Kos until the following day.

Best things to do in Kos:

  • 🚶 Get acquainted with Kos on this private, half-day tour around the island
  • 🏞️ When you want to visit the volcanic island of Nisyros on your Kos break, do it the convenient way with a day trip that covers all your transport and a guide
  • 🤿 Get this half-day diving trip to the unspoiled island of Pserimos and to a beautiful crystal-clear lagoon
  • ⛰️ Experience the scenic beauty of Mt. Dikaios on this heart-pumping off-road excursion

Marmaris To Rhodes

How To Visit The Greek Islands From Turkey In One Day - Rhodes, Lindos bay

If you’re in the Dalaman area, you can visit Rhodes, known locally as Rodos, from Marmaris port. The crossing takes a little longer here, around 1.5 hours, but it’s incredibly scenic, and you can even sit on the top deck and soak up some sun.

It’s important to note, though, that the crossing between Marmaris and Rhodes involves an open-sea crossing at one point, which means the ride can occasionally be a little choppy. If you’re prone to seasickness, make sure you have your medication with you, or grab some ginger biscuits from the market before you go!

Best things to do in Rhodes:

  • 🚢 Cruise around the beautiful island of Rhodes , creating an exceptional and unforgettable summer experience
  • 🏞️ If you wish to visit the main highlights of Rhodes Island, depending on nobody else’s travel wishes and interests but yours, this tour is your best choice
  • 🍲 Sample the flavors of Rhodes on this half-day tour that combines a vineyard and distillery tour with a cooking class and 10-course lunch
  • ⛵ Set sail on a scenic late afternoon cruise from Mandraki port and experience Rhodes from the water at dusk

There are two crossings daily during the peak summer months and two coming back in the late afternoon/early evening. Again, be sure not to miss the last ferry back; otherwise, you’ll be looking for a hotel on Rhodes for the night.

In general, the last ferry will get you back to Marmaris around 6 pm, but make sure to check the times as they’re subject to change.

Again, the winter months see a drastically reduced timetable, which means checking crossing times online beforehand.

How to book ferry tickets from turkey to the greek islands.

Balkan Flags_Greece 2

If you’re staying in either of these areas for more than a week, a day trip to a Greek island from Turkey is a fantastic idea. It’s a great way to visit two entirely different destinations during one holiday while also allowing you to improve your passport stamp collection.

Booking Tickets

You can book tickets in three ways.

Option 1. First, you can book via an excursion or tour operator, who will do all the paperwork for you and will also arrange a pick-up from and drop-off at your hotel.

Option 2. You can book tickets at the port office yourself. Booking tickets yourself is cheaper, but you must make your own way to the port.

Option 3. You can book ahead of time online.

In Bodrum , getting to the port is pretty easy because of its central location. In Bodrum , you must visit the port if you want to book tickets directly. On the other hand, in Marmaris , you’ll have to jump in a taxi, which will cost you around 20 Lira, and take you straight to the port entrance. The Marmaris port office is located at the marina.

Don’t Forget Your Passport

You will have to show your passport when booking your tickets. Prices vary, but you can expect to pay around 45 Euros for an adult return ticket. If you choose to book via an excursion vendor or tour operator, you will pay about 10 Euros more.

Passport And Visa Issues When Traveling Between Turkey And Greece

Balkan Flags_Turkey 1

Of course, you’re leaving Turkey , albeit for the day, and entering another country, which means you need to have your passport with you. Ensure that you have more than six months of validity left on your passport for entry into Greece . It would be best to take your Turkish e-visa or residency permit with you, which will be checked and stamped as you exit the port passport control desk and re-stamped as you enter Turkey later that day.

As visa requirements for Greece depend upon your country of origin, you will need to check whether you need a specific visa to visit Greece on the Greek government website . For the most part, this shouldn’t be an issue as Greece is part of the Schengen Zone, but it’s always a good idea to double-check.

You’ll have around six hours on either island  and while that might not sound a lot, you’ll be surprised how much you can cram into those few hours.

There is plenty to see and do on both Greek islands on a day trip from Turkey . Rhodes, in particular, has a beautiful blend of old and new to check out.

Do we need another passport for this?

Another? You will need your passport to travel between any two countries globally, including between Greece (EU) and Turkiye (non-EU). Hope that helps.

We has a day trip from Marmaris to Rhodes and it was a good day , but takes longer to get there than they say, and it really takes some time to get through customs so delayed for 45 minutes on return. We had about 4 half hours there which was really nice.

We did a boat trip from Marmaris to Rhodes , which was fairly quick and comfortable although you can only stay on one level. Very Reasonably Priced, but depends who you book through as we were quoted different prices by each so we booked online from the best price. We had plenty of time in the town to look around and there is lots to see and do. I would say you can probably see everything in a day. We had a lovely traditional Greek meal and there are lots of cafes and restaurants about. It was a beautiful island and the locals are very friendly. There are some little shops and stalls to look round and the island has its own individual history to look into. Saw enough in one day but could go back for longer stay and visit surrounding areas.

We booked Marmaris Rhodes Ferry Tickets online from excursionmarmaris.com. Picked up near our hotel and taken to the harbor to catch the Ferry (only takes around 1 hour). With a short walk we were inside the walls of the old town. The old town is magnificent and there are some great places to eat but it is really expensive, cost us 70 euros to eat in Rhodes for a family of 4. But the trip was very nice.

Me and my family were in Marmaris for a week holiday and decided to go and visit on a day trip. So that we can say that i was an in Greece. There were shops and restaurants will many different options and aome beautiful historical sites. It was a nice place to be visited but not as nice as Marmaris.

We choose to book our day trip to Rhodes from Marmaris by Mares Travel. Not only the most reasonable price offer but also they made thing easier for us. They did all the paper work for us, easy to communicate. Really enjoyed the day, it didn’t take long to get there and had plenty of time in Rhodes. While in Rhodes can the open top bus tour which will let you see historical sites at island.

Day trip to Rhodes from Marmaris is a cheap and quick way to visit another country. If you like history you will love your walk through the old town. Just remember it is abit pricer to eat in Rhodes.

To come to Marmaris and not go to the rhodes, it would really be a pity. I did not find a lower price for this trip. Not to mention that for every excursion they come for you by van, by bus or whatever, and they come back naturally. The praise for Cem, a representative of the agency, was there for every one of my questions.

Actually we did have a good time on our trip and the sea was flat calm so it was only 50 minutes to go to Rhodes from Marmaris. Never been to Rhodes before it was quite nice, slightly a bit more expensive then Marmaris. Not sure if I would want to holiday there but good for a day trip

I can say that Rhodes is truly a beautiful city, there is something around every corner. A true medieval castle with stunning cafes and restaurants. We will definitely be back.

Booked a trip with catamaran from Marmaris, a pretty quick 50 minute trip. To be honest Rhodes is a fantastic place. The historical castle and the old town are the best places. There are so many different food options on the island, but prices are slightly more expensive.

Totally enjoyed Rhodes day trip from Marmaris! Visited the Old Town, had lovely lunch in a small restaurant by the seafront. Food was very good and not overpriced. There is so much to do and see, lots of small narrow streets to walk. Also relaxed on the beach and splashing our feet for a little while. Great day 🙂

Great trip, well worth the money. We booked with Mares Travel online and paid 35 £ only. If you try to book on the street the price is around 40 £. ıf you try to make a deal with the hotel the price is around £45. The price includes all taxes and hotel transfers, ferry ticket (bothways). You start like 7.30 and be back at 18.00.

With the fast catamaran it takes about an hour to arrive to Rhodes, such a lovely place to spend a day. We spent the day in the old town looking at the sights. Warning – did receive hassle to purchase gifts and restaurants in the old town were good but expensive to eat for a family of 5.

If you have time in Marmaris, you can easily take the boat trip to Rhodes!! It is a great day out and only takes fifty minutes to go there! The island is beautiful and the people are absolutely lush.

Rhodes is definitely worth a visit for the castle walls and other historical sites, but other than that the town centre itself can be covered in the day! The boat trip from Marmaris was quick around 50 minutes.

Tip : if you don’t feel like climbing and visiting the tombs, you can always visit Fethiye’s Şehit Fethi Bey Parkı , the largest recreation area in the region, which is also ideal for families with small kids.

Marmaris rhodes boat trip.

We booked the boat trip across from Marmaris to Rhodes for the day with Marmaris Travel. The tour was well organized, it was nice to visit the old town and walk around the old castle walls of the town. You can buy the hoponhopoff ticket for 12euro but we did not really use it much. Was a good day out all in all.

day trip to rodos

We have been to Rhodes twice from Marmaris, this is a great trip and well worth money. We paid 34 £ online with Marmaris Travel, on the street its around 40 £ and hotel wanted 45 £. Price was the best, it is an all day tour with hotel transfer. Catamaran takes an hour to arrive to Rhodes. There is always a queue at customs, but a well worth tour.

What To Do On A Day Trip To Marmaris From Rhodes

On our recent trip to Rhodes, I decided to head across the water to Turkey – only an hour on the ferry, it’s within easy reach of the Greek island, so it was a no-brainer for me to visit a new country for under £40.

I say it was a no-brainer, but if you’ve read my other blog posts on the trip, you’ll know that I grappled with the idea of visiting a resort town instead of somewhere a bit more cultural when there are so many incredible places to see in Turkey.

Disclaimer: this was part of a trip to Rhodes , which was hosted by Jet2 Holidays , however the itinerary and all content are completely my own.

Marmaris, Turkey

But I went anyway, and yes, it’s a tourist town. It has ridiculous novelty ships shaped like Captain Jack Sparrow and tacky shops aimed at British people who want cheap fake designer tat.

But as I discovered, there’s a bit more to Marmaris than that.

Here’s what I got up to on my day in Marmaris!

Marmaris Castle, Turkey

Marmaris Castle

One of the absolute highlights of Marmaris is Marmaris Castle.

Not only is it an awesome castle overlooking the bay, views of which you can get from the walls all the way around the castle, but there’s also a museum spread across various rooms tucked away in the castle itself.

Marmaris Castle, Turkey

It’s not massive, but at 100 lira (about £4) it’s a steal and absolutely worth going in.

The museum of archaeology is really good, with artifacts dating back to 3000BC and almost all of what was on display was BC during the Hellenistic period – in fact, the castle is meant to be originally from around 1000BC, and reconstructed in the 1400’s. Being from Orkney, I’ve seen a lot of neolithic artifacts, but it’s rare that I’ve seen things this old elsewhere, so I was really impressed at how good the condition was of some of the jewellery, pots and statues. The preservation of this kind of thing is just amazing!

Marmaris castle museum, Marmaris, Turkey

There’s even a wee statue with bagpipes somewhere!

A lot of it is quite similar to the museums in Rhodes, so as a day trip from Rhodes, it might not be as impressive, but I’d say the castle is still worth it just for walking the walls and taking in the views of the town and the scenery surrounding it. It was also a good viewpoint for getting your bearings.

View over Marmaris from the castle, Marmaris, Turkey

The only thing is, I totally forgot to take a photo of Gulliver! When the sun came out, I headed back up after lunch and asked if I could go back in to take a photo. I felt a bit stupid asking, but it didn’t seem like an unreasonable request. The girl behind the desk smiled and went, “oh yes, I remember you” and made a bit of conversation, then scanned my ticket, turned to me earnestly and went “but your ticket has expired. Sorry.” HAHA. Completely deadpan. There were no actual barriers so nothing to stop me going back in, it was just a bit strange!

You can also do a day trip to Rhodes from Marmaris – however I recommend spending longer there! Check out my four day itinerary of Rhodes here for a Greek island escape!

Old town, Marmaris, Turkey

Marmaris Old Town

You may have seen that I really liked the old town of Marmaris. In fact, it was my highlight of the whole day!

This beautiful area really took me by surprise, and as soon as I walked up the first street, it was a totally different atmosphere to anywhere else I’d seen in the town.

Marmaris Castle is inside the old town, so it does tend to get quite busy – but that’s partly why I couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen anything about it! It’s not like it’s hidden away, and by the time I’d sat down for lunch, the narrow streets were buzzing with tourists.

Old town, Marmaris, Turkey

There are a few art shops dotted around, as well as cafés and a restaurant offering a panoramic view. I did go up there, climbing up the steps to the top, and planned to maybe get some food there, but they only really served pizza, so I decided to try elsewhere.

They did say I could take some photos if I wanted though, despite signs saying only customers could take photos! It would be a fantastic place for a few drinks, to be fair, but I was hungry at this point.

Cats in Marmaris, Turkey

There are also lots of cats everywhere! This seems to be a theme of Turkey and indeed Rhodes (not sure about the rest of Greece?) and when I arrived, I immediately sat next to three cats in a coffee shop. That sounds like a sitcom waiting to happen!

Cat, Marmaris, Turkey

When I had lunch, this young cat kept looking at my food, and the waitress would come over with a water sprayer! They obviously can be pests, but generally they live in peace.

Grand Bazaar, Marmaris, Turkey

Grand Bazaar

While it may not be quite as grand as the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Marmaris has a bazaar of its own.

I have to admit I was wholly unimpressed the first time I walked through; a quick shortcut through to the waterfront where I didn’t really stop to look at anything. What I did see? A £5 shop of fake designer clothes. A “J D Sports” (which you can see in the photo above). A “H and M”. Exactly what I expected, and totally uninspiring.

£5 shop in Marmaris, Turkey

But I did decide to go back, if only to find some Turkish Delight to take back with me. A lot of the shops that sell it have rows and rows of different flavours to choose from, and empty boxes that you can fill up with whichever ones you like. It’s also a great place to try some samples!

I went into two places, then a while later went back to the first to try my luck with bartering. It’s a long time since I’ve tried! The guy recognised me, and when I asked if he’d do two boxes for X amount, I was expecting some pushback. Instead, he went, “you said you’ll be back, so yes I will do it for that as you kept your word.”

Shop in the Grand Bazaar with Turkish delight and spices, Marmaris, Turkey

Somewhere in between, I also found a really cool antiques shop full of quirky bits and pieces, and an art shop with colourful ceramics and plates. There was the most amazing tile art of some horses, which I was very tempted to get for my parents, but it was a lot! I did come away with a couple of nice bits (including a different Christmas present for my parents!) and got chatting to the lovely owner for ages.

I have to admit, the Grand Bazaar really surprised me in the end. Instead of hard sells from the people standing outside the “designer” shops, I found some really interesting bits and friendly sellers.

Marmaris, Turkey

Marmaris waterfront & beach

The waterfront is where everyone will be on a nice day. During my visit, the promenade was very much under construction, which made the area with all the boats (marina? There is another actual marina though) a lot less enticing. The Pirates Of The Caribbean boats were very silly, and there were men shouting over to offer boat rides on the other boats.

Captain Jack Sparrow boat, Marmaris, Turkey

Further along, though, I made it to the end of the chaos and found the beach.

The view from the beach is outstanding, mountains towering across the water. I was taken aback by how pretty it is – I hadn’t been expecting anything special at all! On a sunny day, this would be a great place to while away a day. Even without the sun, I found myself wishing I’d brought a book.

Marmaris beach, Marmaris, Turkey

It’s a long, long beach so I didn’t walk all the way to the end, but I don’t feel like I would have missed much that I hadn’t seen already. The beach is pretty nice, although I bet it gets packed in the summer!

I think once the prom has been re-laid, this will be a great area to chill out on holiday, from the bars lining the outside of the old town, to the avenue running along the beach. The waterfront definitely felt more like a typical tourist town, but a surprisingly nice one at that.

The only thing I missed out on was a Turkish bath. I’d actually been enjoying myself so much that I totally forgot, and it was only an hour before I needed to head back to the ferry terminal that someone approached me and offered to take me to a Turkish bath. Next time, then!

Boat to Marmaris, Turkey, from Rhodes, Greece

Getting to Marmaris from Rhodes

There are a few tours you can book to Marmaris from Rhodes. Jet2 Holidays offered a tour, but I’d actually already booked it in advance to make sure I could get on it as I didn’t realise they offered it as well.

When I searched for it, it came up with so many options for the other way around – Rhodes is a really popular day trip for people staying in Marmaris for a week! It seemed like a less popular option to take a day trip to Marmaris, although there were lots of people on the ferry.

Anyway, I booked through GetYourGuide which is one of my favourite tour booking sites these days. The ferry was with SeaDreams and included hotel pick up and drop off, which was brilliant and made the day seamless.

Book your day trip to Marmaris from Rhodes here!

You will need your passport and 15€ in cash for the port tax. Passport control was pretty quick for the most part, with a very basic passport control booth in Rhodes, and then a bit more of a terminal in Marmaris.

It took a short while when we arrived, mostly because I chose the queue where the couple right at the front were being interrogated for AGES. A few of us shuffled our feet awkwardly while the entire other queue cleared. When the couple were finally let through, there was a literal cheer from everyone in our queue! Apart from that, it was really quick both ends.

There’s an optional bus tour to take which seems to be more of a shopping tour, so I opted to do Marmaris independently once we arrived.

From the terminal, I didn’t know how long it would take to walk into town, so when a Scottish couple invited me to share a taxi with them, I hopped in. Within minutes, we had stopped on a shopping street near one of the entrances to the Grand Bazaar. It’s hard to tell from the map because the promenade goes on for miles, but it’s really not far at all to the centre of town and it’s easy to walk.

I walked back in about 20 minutes from Fredonia Coffee (my first and last port of call for the day, for both wifi and toilets but also tea – no Turkish coffee for me!).

The ferry in the morning from Rhodes to Marmaris is at 9am, so you can either get to the port yourself, or there’s hotel pick up offered, which picked me up at 8.10am. The ferry back was at 5pm, so we had to be back at the port for 4.30pm. With the ferry taking around an hour, this gave us six hours in Marmaris in total, which I felt was enough time to sink my teeth in.

Overall, I really enjoyed my day in Turkey! The weather could have been better, but it also meant it wasn’t packed with tourists. I loved the old town (in case you hadn’t guessed!) and I thought the castle was brilliant, and even the Grand Bazaar in the end had some gems tucked away if you looked for them.

Definitely worth the day out, and a nice taster of Turkey as a destination.

This is such a fantastic post about Marmaris! It’s one of the very first places I had a chance to visit in Turkey as part of a family holiday and I wish I knew back then, that it is possible to catch a ferry to Greece! Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

What a great way to spend a day and why not visit another country when you are sooo close. Can definitely see the similarities to Greece with those white washed buildings, but then also the Turkish influence with the market and spices. Looks like you made the most of your day there 🙂

It’s so nice when a place exceeds your expectations. Marmaris, touristy stuff aside, looks lovely.

Truth be told, I’d never heard of Marmaris until your post but it looks like I’ll be adding it to my list 🙂

I’ve not heard of Marmaris; even though I’ve visited Turkey before, I didn’t go to that part of the country, so I didn’t know of it! I’m glad you got to spend a short day in a new country (although for some reason, I’d assumed you’d already visited Turkey??). All the same, its gorgeous, fortified walls make for a great, short trip!

Boats docked on the shore of Fethiye, Turkey, one of the best day trips from Rhodes.

There’s no question that Rhodes is among the most beautiful islands in Greece . Though often overshadowed by more popular options such as Santorini and Mykonos , Rhodes packs a punch in terms of things to do and see. But sometimes, it’s nice to take a day and explore someplace new. Thankfully, Rhodes Town offers some great options for day trips to neighboring islands, towns, and even countries! That’s right, a few different Turkish towns are easily accessible from Rhodes as well. Here are our favorite day trips from Rhodes!

Table of Contents

It’s home to beautiful beaches, stunning views, and plenty of things to do. Here’s everything you need to know about planning a day trip from Rhodes Town to Lindos.

The easiest way to get from Rhodes Town to Lindos is by car or bus. There are plenty of rental car companies in Rhodes Town, or you can take a public bus.

Lindos Beach is actually separated into two beaches. To the left is Lindos Beach and to the right is Pallas Beach, which is a little more laid back.

Symi Island is one of the most popular day-trip destinations from Rhodes Town and for good reason! This gorgeous island has it all – from stunning beaches to quaint villages and plenty of history. Here’s everything you need to know about planning a day trip from Rhodes Town to Symi Island.

The easiest way to get to Symi Island is by boat. There are frequent ferries that depart from Rhodes Town (located just a short walk from the Old Town) and the journey takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes. Ferry tickets (1-way) are about $20 USD.

There are a number of guided tours also available that often include lunch or stops at different destinations.

Once you arrive in Symi, you’ll be greeted by its iconic colorful houses which line the harbour. Be sure to explore the town before heading off to one of the many beaches – some of our favorites include Nemo Beach and Agios Georgios Beach. If you’re feeling active, there are plenty of hiking trails to explore too.

In terms of food, there are plenty of great places to eat on the island. For something traditional, head to Odyssia Restaurant which serves up delicious Greek dishes made with fresh local ingredients. For an Insta-worthy date night, try The Secret Garden. You won’t be able to stop taking photos of this place! Plus, the food is delicious.

Symi Island is the perfect place to relax and soak up some Mediterranean sun while getting lost in the streets lined with colorful, charming houses. Be forewarned, Symi and Lindos are the most popular day trips from Rhodes Town, so be prepared for crowds if you’re visiting in summer.

Marmaris, Turkey

Beach chairs on a pebbled beach in Marmaris, Turkey.

The Turkish city of Marmaris is a great day trip option from Rhodes Town in Greece. It’s easy to get there by boat, and there’s plenty to see and do once you arrive. In this blog post, we’ll give you all the details you need to plan your own Marmaris day trip.

Marmaris is located on the southwest coast of Turkey, about midway between Istanbul and Antalya. The city is best known for its beautiful natural setting, with a sheltered harbor surrounded by mountains. Marmaris also has a long history dating back to the days of the Ottoman Empire. These days, it’s a popular tourist destination with plenty to offer visitors.

Getting to Marmaris from Rhodes Town is easy. There are boats departing daily from Rhodes Town harbor, and the journey takes approximately 1 hour. Ferry tickets are roughly $55 USD (1-way).

Once you arrive in Marmaris, there’s plenty to keep you busy. The city center is home to a number of shops and restaurants, as well as some historic sites.

If you’re looking for something to do, we recommend checking out Marmaris Castle. The castle was built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, and it’s now one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Other things to see and do in Marmaris include visiting the old town district, taking a boat trip around the harbor, or spending some time on one of the city’s many beaches.

Don’t be afraid to haggle in the Old Town – it’s normal here! Offer roughly 60% of the original price to start.

For food, try Smiley’s Restaurant. The food and staff are both worth a stop – not to mention very reasonable prices.

When it’s time to head back to Rhodes Town, there are boats departing regularly from Marmaris harbor. The journey takes the same amount of time, around 1 hour, so you’ll be back in Rhodes Town in time for dinner.

Fethiye, Turkey

Beautiful boats docked off the coast of Turkey in Fethiye.

The easiest way to get to Fethiye on day trips from Rhodes Town is by taking a day trip. There are many tour operators that offer this service and it’s very easy to book. The journey takes around a 1 hour and 30 minutes by boat and you’ll get to see some amazing scenery along the way. Ferry tickets are around $40 USD (1-way).

Once you’ve arrived in Fethiye, there are plenty of things to do and see. If you’re looking to do some shopping, the town centre is full of shops selling souvenirs, clothes and locally made products. There are also a number of restaurants and bars, so you can grab a bite to eat or have a few drinks while you’re here.

Similar to Marmaris, don’t be afraid to haggle here if you’re going shopping for souvenirs.

If you want to spend some time outdoors, Fethiye also has beautiful beaches where you can relax and soak up the sun. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming, so make sure you bring your swimsuit!

When you’re ready for something to eat, definitely try Yengeç Restaurant. The view is second-to-none, the staff was fantastic (thanks Mehmet!) and the mezes were the best in the area.

Whatever you decide to do, a day trip from Rhodes Town to Fethiye is a great way to see some of the best that Turkey has to offer.

Nisyros, Greece

Cats in a cute, charming Greek alley in Nisyros, Greece.

Nisyros is an island in the southeastern Aegean Sea, about midway between Rhodes and Kos. It is part of the Dodecanese group of islands, and its nearest neighbors are Tilos to the west and Patmos to the east. Nisyros is a volcanic island, and its main feature is the active volcano that forms its center. The island has a population of about 500 people, most of whom live in the village of Mandraki. There are two other villages on the island, Paloi and Nikia.

The easiest way to get to Nisyros from Rhodes is by ferry. There are several companies that operate ferries between Rhodes and Nisyros, and the journey takes about 3 hours. Obviously this is a fairly long travel time for a day trip, but if you’re not averse to getting up early in the morning, it’s totally doable!

Once you arrive in Nisyros, the first thing you’ll want to do is explore the volcano. The best way to do this is by taking a boat tour around the island. These tours leave from the port of Mandraki and last for about two hours. During the tour, you’ll get up close to the crater of the volcano and see some of the other volcanic features of the island, including hot springs and fumaroles.

After you’ve explored the volcano, take some time to relax on one of the island’s beaches. There are several beaches to choose from, including Mandraki Beach, Paloi Beach, and Nikia Beach. Or, if you prefer, you can just spend some time wandering around Mandraki village, which is full of charming traditional Greek houses.

While you’re in Mandraki Village, stop by Geusea for one of the best dining experiences you’ll have in all of Greece! I’m not joking! Obviously try the seafood, but in case you don’t eat fish (like my husband), their non-aquatic options are also phenomenal! Especially the burgers!

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day by the beach or an adventure-filled day exploring all that Nisyros has to offer, a day trip from Rhodes Town is definitely worth it.

Kos, Greece

Blue-domed roof in Kos, Greece, one of the best day trips from Rhodes.

Kos is the third largest of the Dodecanese islands and lies off the coast of Turkey. It’s just a short ferry ride from Rhodes Town, making it the perfect day trip destination. Many people love Kos so much that they need to spend much more than one day. But, if one day is all you have, Kos is one of the best day trips from Rhodes.

There are two main ways to get to Kos from Rhodes Town – by ferry or by catamaran. The journey takes around 3 hours by ferry and costs approximately $35 USD (1-way). Another long journey, but again, if you can get yourself up early, it’s well-worth it. Plus, you can always stay the night if you’d like!

Once you’re in Kos, there are plenty of things to do. You can visit the Asklepion, which was one of the most famous healing centers of the ancient world. You can also explore the medieval Castle of Neratzia, or go for a swim at one of the many beaches on the island.

After you’ve worked up an appetite and are ready to head back to the harbor, go to Kapari Meze for some seriously mouthwatering food and homemade limoncello before you hop on the return ferry.

If you’re looking for a day trip that’s full of history, culture, and relaxation, then a trip to Kos is perfect for you.

Chalki, Greece

View from over Halki, Greece overlooking the bay and red roofs of the village.

Chalki is a small island off the coast of Rhodes and it makes for a great day trip. You can easily get there by taking a boat from Rhodes Town – there are plenty of companies offering this service. To get to Chalki, you can take a ferry from Rhodes Town. The ferry ride takes about 2 hours and there are several ferries per day. A one-way ferry ticket costs around $35 USD.

Once you’re on the island, you can explore the charming streets, visit the Orthodox church, or simply relax at one of the many cafes and restaurants. There’s also a beautiful beach where you can swim and sunbathe.

If you’re feeling adventurous, hike up one of the trails that start in town to get this epic view of the harbor and the iconic red roof tops.

Remezzo is a great place to stop for a bite to eat close to the ferry terminal. Try the pizza – I know, I know, you’re in Greece, why eat pizza? But trust me on this one.

Chalki is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of Rhodes Town for a day, so be sure to add it to your list of day trips from Rhodes!

Valley of the Butterflies

Lush forest with a small bridge and tiny waterfall in the Valley of the Butterflies in Rhodes.

The Valley of the Butterflies is one of Rhodes’ most popular tourist attractions. Located just a short drive from the main town, this picturesque spot is home to thousands of butterflies. It’s a great place to relax and take in some gorgeous scenery. Though a visit certainly doesn’t take a whole day, we couldn’t help but include it on the list of best day trips from Rhodes Town.

The Valley of the Butterflies is located on the north-west coast of Rhodes. The bus takes around 50 minutes but there are often delays. Alternatively, a taxi takes about 25 minutes and costs around $45 USD.

Once you arrive in the valley, there are a few different things you can do. There is a short hike to the top of the valley where you will get an amazing view of the butterflies and the surrounding area. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can take a swim in one of the many pools that are dotted around the valley.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you take plenty of sunscreen and water with you as it can get quite hot in the valley during the summer months. And if you are lucky, you might even spot a turtle or two!

The Valley of the Butterflies is a must-see for any nature lover visiting Rhodes. It’s home to thousands of butterflies, as well as other wildlife. The best time to visit is from May to September when the butterflies are most active. The best part about this day trip from Rhodes is that it can easily be done in half a day, leaving you plenty of time to chill on the beach or gorge yourself on Greek cuisine and ouzo!

Mount Attavyros, Greece

Hiking views from a mountain in Rhodes, Greece.

Mount Attavyros is the highest point on Rhodes and offers some great hiking trails. If you’re looking for a challenge, try summiting Mt. Xenophon, which is the second highest peak on the island.

If you’re looking for adventurous day trips from Rhodes Town, Mount Attavyros is a great option. It’s easy to get there – just take the bus from Rhodes Town to Kolymbia, and then another bus from Kolymbia to Mount Attavyros. Once you’re in Mount Attavyros, there are plenty of things to do. You can hike to the top of the mountain, visit the monastery, or go for a swim in one of the many pools.

The easiest way to get to Mount Attavyros is by taking the bus from Rhodes Town to Kolymbia, and then another bus from Kolymbia to Mount Attavyros. The journey takes around an hour and a half in total.

One of the best things to do in Mount Attavyros is to hike to the top of the mountain. The views from the summit are absolutely stunning – you can see for miles in every direction. The hike itself is fairly challenging, but it’s definitely worth it!

The monastery in Mount Attavyros is well worth a visit. It’s a beautiful building, and the grounds are very peaceful. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of the monastery, there are guided tours available.

There are several pools in Mount Attavyros, all of which are open to the public. The water is crystal clear and very refreshing – it’s the perfect way to cool off after a long day of exploring!

Kritinia, Greece

Venetian castle ruins in Kritinia, Greece, one of the best day trips from Rhodes.

Kritinia is a small town located in the western part of Rhodes. It’s home to a 16th-century castle and some beautiful Byzantine churches. The town is also a great place to try some traditional Greek food for its quaint, authentic nature. Kritinia is one of my personal favorite day trips from Rhodes Town on this list.

There are a few different ways to get to Kritinia from Rhodes Town. You can either take a bus, drive, or even hike! The hike is around six hours round trip and is considered moderate to difficult. If you’re not up for the hike, taking the bus is definitely the way to go. It’s cheap and takes only about 1 hour and 45 minutes each way.

A taxi takes 45 minutes but can cost up to $90 USD!

Once you arrive in Kritinia, there are plenty of things to do! There are a few beaches where you can relax in the sun, or if you’re feeling adventurous there are also some hiking trails nearby.

In terms of beaches, Kritinia has plenty to offer. There are several small, sheltered coves where you can enjoy a quiet swim, or you can head to one of the larger beaches for a day of sunbathing and swimming. Whichever beach you choose, you’re sure to have a great time!

Make sure you visit the Castle of Kritinia. This Venetian castle was built in the 14th century and is a great example of medieval architecture. You can explore the inside of the castle, which is now in ruins, as well as walk around the grounds and enjoy the views.

In terms of food, you’ll want to stop at Kalamar Kretische Taverne for some of the most affordable, authentic, and delicious Greek cuisine on all of Rhodes! Antonis is a superb host and makes his guests feel as though they are dining with family.

No matter what you decide to do, Kritinia is a great place to spend the day.

Embonas, Greece

Embonas is a village located in the central part of the island, and one of the most underrated day trips from Rhodes Town. It’s famous for its vineyards and is one of the best places on the island to go wine tasting. There are several wineries in the area, so you’re sure to find one that you like.

The best way to get to Embonas from Rhodes Town is by car. It takes about an hour to drive there. You’ll have to take a taxi or get a designated driver if you plan on tastings at the local wineries. Unfortunately the bus route to Embonas is absolute crap, and takes almost 3 hours!

Once you arrive in Embonas, there are plenty of things to do. You can visit the local wineries, explore the Old Town, or go for a hike.

There are several wineries located in and around Embonas. Visitors can tour the facilities and learn about the wine-making process. Most wineries offer tastings, so be sure to try some of the local wines!

Embonas is home to a beautiful old town, which is full of narrow streets and charming buildings. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to explore, as well as some small shops selling local produce. The old town is the perfect place to spend a few hours exploring.

Embonas is surrounded by mountains, which make for great hiking opportunities. There are several marked trails to follow, and the views from the top are stunning. If you’re feeling energetic, why not hike up to the summit of Mount Profitis Ilias? This peak offers some of the most spectacular views on the island!

There is also a great restaurant called Ataviros Restaurant that serves traditional Greek food. The staff is very friendly and the food is delicious. If you’re looking for a day trip from Rhodes Town, then definitely consider going to Embonas!

Ialysos, Greece

Pebble beach at Ialysos, Greece

Ialysos is an ancient city that was once one of the three major city-states on Rhodes. Today, its ruins are a popular spot for tourists. The site includes a number of temples and other structures, as well as a museum with artifacts from the city’s long history.

The best way to get to Ialysos from Rhodes Town is by bus. The journey takes around 30 minutes and the buses are frequent.

Once you arrive in Ialysos, there are plenty of things to do during your day trip from Rhodes. Visit the Archaeological Museum, which has artifacts from the city’s long history, including some from the time when it was known as Halicarnassus. Or explore the remains of the Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus, which date back to the fourth century BC.

If you’re looking for something a little more modern, check out the Folklore Museum, which has exhibits on local traditions and culture.

If you’re feeling active, you can even hike up Mount Filerimos! Whatever you decide to do, you’re sure to have a great day out in Ialysos.

When you’re ready for a bite to eat, you can’t go wrong at Mr. Greek. This unassuming restaurant is owned by the kindest man, Giorgos, who will help guide you through the menu and pick the best option for your tastes.

Whether you’re looking to explore nature, history, or beaches, there’s are plenty of perfect day trips from Rhodes for you to experience all the area has to offer.

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

By Debora Patta , Tucker Reals

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 5:25 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: Iran launched drone attacks against Israel on Saturday. Read CBS News'  latest coverage here .

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
