After more than six decades on the road,

Delbert McClinton announces touring retirement

Delbert McClinton has had plenty of time to reflect on his 63-year music

career during this pandemic. For the first time in six decades, he has been

off the road and off stage for more than a year. He has made an important

decision, with an announcement to his band members, crew, and organization

this week.   “Here I sit, 80 years old, in the middle of a pandemic. This is not how I

envisioned playing out my final years as an entertainer. Music has been my

total being for my whole life,” he admits. “I had been considering finishing

this year with a modest number of shows. But the more I thought about it,

the more obstacles that have been placed in front of me, the less my heart

was in it.”   “I don't want to get up in front of audiences who might be the cause of my incapacity or death just because I want to play music. I don't want to listen to anyone who won't wear a mask or get a vaccine. We all have different values and they are inarguable.”   He continues, “I have had a rewarding career, and I have accomplished more than I ever dreamed I would. With that in mind, this is a good time to retire.”   Delbert adds that this is a good time to close out his career, with a Grammy win (2020 Best Traditional Blues), a great album (Tall, Dark & Handsome: Hot Shot Records/Thirty Tigers), the Americana Lifetime Achievement Award, and the best band and crew with whom he has ever had the pleasure of sharing a stage (Self-Made Men + Dana).

“I’m leaving the stage with no regrets. I’ve done all that I set out to do and more. Retirement from touring will allow me to enjoy my family and travel a bit as it becomes safer. It's been a great ride,” he adds, as he looks forward to the next chapter, which will include a few recording projects that he has always wanted to do. Stay tuned.

Note:: Delbert will perform his last official domestic show on the Sandy Beaches Cruise in January, 2024 .  Visit SandyBeachesCruises.com for details on how you can be a part of this exciting event.

Delbert McClinton is a singer and songwriter hailing from Lubbock, Texas, United States who was born on the 4th of November 1940. Since his debut in 1962 he has released 24 studio albums and become one of the most prolific blues singers of his generation.

He began his career as a sideman in a bar-band called The Straitjackets, playing the harmonica that he took up after discovering the blues during his teenage years. While he played with them he backed a veritable who’s who of Blues legends like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Howlin’ Wolf, but by 1960 he’d struck out on his own. He ended up being the first ever white artist to have a record played on KNOK a blues radio station local to him. This record made such a name for himself that by 1962, he was featured on Bruce Channel’s number one hit “Hey! Baby”, he ended up touring with Channel in the U.K, and even gave lessons in blues harmonica to some flash in the pan called John Lennon.

However, McClinton wasn’t satisfied with being anyone’s sideman, and spent the rest of the 1960’s slowly building up a reputation for himself as a blues singer and songwriter. He wouldn’t catch a break until 1972, however, when he moved to Los Angeles and teamed up with fellow Texan Glen Clark. The duo made two records with him in 72 and 73, and while neither were commercial smashes, they made McClinton’s name as a songwriter. He returned to Texas and signed a solo deal with ABC Records in 1974, and under his own name he’s been releasing albums, touring and recording with everyone under the sun. His name was propelled even higher by the one and only Emmylou Harris, as she had a number one hit on the country charts with his song “Two More Bottles Of Wine” in 1978.

Ever since then, McClinton’s been one of the most dependable acts in roots music. He’s worked with the likes of Tom Petty and Melissa Etheridge, enjoyed several Grammy award wins and even made a new album with Glen Clark in 2013 entitled “Blind, Crippled and Crazy”. He shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, and half a century after his recording debut, he’s still at the very top of his game. For that, he comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

Seeing this legend live will be an unforgettable night, I highly recommend it. Delbert is excellent at bringing his Texas roots to a local audience, filling their ears with pleasure from his underlying blues tone to his bursts of soul and R&B.

His musical talents incorporate his smooth guitar skills to his unforgettable and amazing harmonica playing of course he is an excellent pianist. A truly talented artist bringing relaxed and soothing melodies to his fans.

Delbert is truly can truly be appreciated by his adult fans, someone the younger generation may not really grasp the concept of with their juvenile ears. Pleasing to both genders, Delbert makes you feel comfortable and at home through his songs using lyrics comprehendible to all, emphasising the emotions he brings out. He writes from the heart and tells his stories remarkably, and this is apparent throughout his live shows.

Although his lyrics may be a little heavy for some, Delbert is true to his words and tells us tales of his childhood as well as recent experiences through beautiful melodies designed to get the crowd thinking about their own souls.

American blues rock and electric blues singer-songwriter and guitarist Delbert McClinton has enjoyed more experience on the live circuit than most and these countless times he has stepped onto stage feed into his current performance style. He may now be in his 70s but as he enjoyed commercial success on mainstream charts as well as rock and country charts in the US there is still a large amount of fans prepared to head out to see him perform live.

The Texan steps onto stage and greets the fan in his charismatic and warm manner before taking a seat in the centre of his loyal accompanying musicians. He quickly gets to work playing the instrumental introduction to 'Take Me To The River' which receives a large cheer from the crowds. All the hits have been included tonight and sound record perfect, proving that Delbert is attaining his vocal capabilities well into his long age. Although most musicians of his age have taken to retirement, when you hear the cheers for 'Givin' It Up for Your Love' and 'Shaky Ground' you understand why McClinton isn't quite ready to hang up his boots and acoustic quite yet.

Fantastic show! Delbert is the consummate performer. He does what he does better than anyone i.e. Rock, Rhythm and Blues.

The show at the Ridglea Theater on November 23 was high energy and fun to be a part of. One aspect of Delbert McClinton's show is the virtuosity of every single member of his band, which he selflessly allowed to shine in their own rights.

He has such a library of past hits but this night he stuck mainly with his new material, which shows that he is continuing to turn out excellent music that he enjoys playing.

One final note: We were there celebrating my wife's birthday and one of the highlights of the night occurred during the encore as we were taking a selfie in front of the stage Delbert waved at us in the background!

Such a generous and soulful and entertaining performer.

Can't wait to see him again.

There's not much you can say about Delbert that hasn't already said. He's still rockin' on with no obvious signs of slowing down.I'm blessed to be able to visit backstage with the band. What a surprise! The highlight of the night was having Bob Britt & Dana Robbins back onstage backing Delbert. Both had health problems that sidelined them, but they're back. The band sounded on all night, doing a super job. The addition of James Pennybaker on a second guitar was icing on the cake.Another night to remember well spent listening to these wonderful musicians.

most if not all of the music he sings and plays are from personal experiences through out his life and if a person listens you have the same things happen to you in your life, I have listen to his music more than thirty years, and have seen him in concert to many times to remember, listen to the music and it will get you through just about anything, you will love it if you take the time to listen to the words and how it applies to you.

Great music, enthusiastic crowd, I have seen Delbert for 15-20 years, he is older, but still has strong voice, enjoyed the sax and trumpet. I must say, however me with long legs, those narrow seats at the Paramount, close to the next row are pretty cramping. Don't know why more rockers aren't aware of him, such good dance music.

Loved the show. Delbert is an amazing singer. His band is fantastic.....especially the Screaming sax. The venue was great......close to Bandera where I live. Could use more seating, though. Would love to see more shows in Texas. Plenty of people I know would love to her this man and his band.

Great show! At 79, he's still gettin it done.

Lots of energy needed to deliver, and he did. Not much talk between songs - not needed. His band is tight with horns and keyboardists (2) and the guitar is outstanding. His voice is as good as ever. GO!

Thanks for lookin out, Songkick!

ABOUT DELBERT MCCLINTON:

Delbert: 2020 “Yeah Baby!”

Congratulations to Delbert McClinton and Self-Made Men + Dana for their 2020 Grammy® Win for Best Traditional Blues Album: Tall, Dark, & Handsome (Hot Shot Records/Thirty Tigers).

It’s been a big year for Delbert, as he has earned the Americana Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance; celebrated the 26th annual Sandy Beaches Cruise; riding the wave of his fourth Grammy®, he kicks off a new year of tour dates from coast to coast.

Delbert will turn 80 in November, and this month marks his 63rd year on stage. From the road houses of Fort Worth to Carnegie Hall and the White House, Delbert admits that he has always been “a fugitive from the law of averages.” Delbert wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on Tall, Dark & Handsome, and Rolling Stone said, “It’s not a stretch to say that McClinton is making the best music of his career.”

Never one to rest on his laurels, today, he is working on his next album which should be out within the year. 2020 will also bring a new paperback edition of the Delbert McClinton: One Of The Fortunate Few (by Diana Finlay Hendricks, Texas A&M University Press) with a new introduction and additional chapter including the latest news of the Texas blues legend.

Tall, Dark, & Handsome (Thirty Tigers/Hot Shot Records), the follow-up to Delbert McClinton’s 2016 Prick of the Litter, offers the easy balance of experience and adventure that has characterized his career for more than sixty years. With this, his 26th original album, Delbert celebrates the strength of his songwriting expertise, the energy of his live performances, and the drive of his touring band.

Fourteen new, original songs, all written or co-written by Delbert, gain momentum as they take the listener on a musical odyssey across the map, moving gracefully from big band to jazz to blues and swing. A dash of tango and a rough-edged, romantic ballad illustrate the diversity, depth, and range of Delbert as an artist, producer, songwriter and musician. Writing sessions with close friends and bandmates, Bob Britt, Kevin McKendree and Mike Joyce, and Dennis Wage, were inspiring.

From Joe Maher’s drum intro on “Mr. Smith,” this album captures the power of a live Delbert show. His trademark vocal style (Lyle Lovett says, “If we could all sing like we want to, we’d all sound like Delbert McClinton.”), is matched by Bob Britt’s guitar and Kevin McKendree’s piano and B-3 organ; with James Pennebaker on guitar; Glenn Worf on bass; and a rock-solid horn section of Dana Robbins (Tenor Sax), Quentin Ware (Trumpet); along with Jim Hoke (Tenor and Bari Sax) and Roy Agee (Trombone), for good measure.

Delbert is the definition of road warrior, having traveled the highways from coast to coast for each of those 62 years. The band on the album is his live band, and he admits, “I love this band. This is the best combination of musicians I have ever worked with.”

Rolling Stone calls him the “Godfather of Americana Music,” and rightfully so. Delbert’s musical style grew from his Texas roots. A little Tejano. A little Bob Wills. Throw in some Jimmy Reed harmonica. Add a splash of Big Joe Turner, and a big band horn section. He has also been nominated for Grammys in the Country category, and has been featured in media from the Los Angeles Times to the Washington Post. He has developed a sound that continues to serve him well, as evidenced by the three Grammy Awards for Contemporary Blues on his mantel.

Born in Lubbock, raised in Fort Worth, and now with homes in Austin, Nashville, and San Miguel de Allende, Delbert recognizes that he has been One Of The Fortunate Few. He grew up with a backstage pass to some of the most significant moments in American culture and music history.

This year, he received the fifth prestigious sidewalk star in Austin’s historic Paramount Theatre on Congress Avenue, an honor that he shares with only two other musicians (Lyle Lovett and Jerry Jeff Walker) and two celebrated actors (Jaston Williams and Joe Sears, of “Greater Tuna” fame). Also in 2019, The Nobelity Project, which has honored Dan Rather, Kris Kristofferson, and many more, awarded Delbert McClinton with the prestigious Feed the Peace Award, as a dedicated and generous supporter of many great causes throughout Texas and the nation.

From his early Fort Worth bands, the Straitjackets and the Rondels, to his current band, Self‑Made Men + Dana, he continues to play sold‑out concert halls and dance halls, historical theatres and music festivals across the nation. A major player in several waves of the national surge of Texas music popularity, Delbert has performed multiple times on Saturday Night Live, has been featured on Austin City Limits seven times, as one of the most celebrated guests on the popular series; and appeared on many other national television shows.

His career truly defines Americana music: Delbert’s unique story of American history – with big horns, a strong rhythm section and a hot harmonica lead. To borrow from one of the songs on Tall, Dark & Handsome, whether he’s doing a live show or a recording, you can be assured that Delbert McClinton “don’t leave no chicken on the bone.”
