The Complete Guide to Dharamshala, India

Dharamshala is a picturesque hill town in the lap of the Dhauladhar range. Located in the upper reaches of the Kangra valley, it serves as the winter capital of the Himachal Pradesh state. Often overshadowed by the more popular suburb of McLeodganj, Dharamshala is more of a laid-back and calm destination to spend a long weekend. Plan your trip to Dharamshala with this comprehensive guide.

Historically, the Kangra valley was part of the ancient Trigarth region that extended from the plains of Punjab to the hills of Himachal. It was ruled by the Katoch dynasty until the British invaded in 1810. In the year 1860, the 66th Gurkha light infantry moved to the site of an old rest house at the seat of Dhauladhar range—known in local parlance as Dharamshala—and converted it into a subsidiary cantonment. This soon grew into a cluster of 14 Gurkha platoon villages, and the battalion later became the 1st Gurkha Rifles. The town of Dharamshala was thus established.

In 1959, thousands of Tibetans, along with their leader His Holiness Dalai Lama, fled their homeland due to Chinese invasion and atrocity. They were given refuge in India, and resettled in the upper reaches of Dharamshala that has eventually come to be known as McLeodganj . Over the years, several Tibetans have settled here, establishing schools, monasteries, and temples.

The cantonment still exists in Dharamshala, coexisting with the Tibetan settlement and the local pastoral Gaddi tribe villages.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Dharamshala is from March to July and again from September to November. The months of December through mid-March are the coolest months, with temperatures dipping to single digits and heavy snowfall hitting upper Dharamshala.

The annual Dharamshala International Film Festival is an unmissable event held every year in the first week of November. It's a perfect time to catch exceptional Indian and international movies, documentaries, and workshops.

Things to Do

Stroll through the lush forested town and visit the Neo-gothic 19th-century St. John in the Wilderness church, nestled amidst oaks and pines. A little further along, you'll stumble upon Dal Lake, which draws tourists with its 200-year-old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as well as boating facilities.

In the upper reaches of Dharamshala is the Tibetan settlement of McLeodganj , dubbed Little Lhasa. Be sure to check out the Tsuglagkhang Complex , the temple and monastery where the 14th Dalai Lama currently resides, before visiting the Tibet Museum and grabbing a helping of momos (Tibetan dumplings) at one of the local restaurants.

Drive down the hills of Dharamshala to watch a match at the HPCA cricket stadium . Even if you're not into the game, it's worth stopping to get a glimpse of it at the very least; with the Dhauladhar mountain range in the backdrop, it is one of the most picturesque cricket stadiums in the world.

Further down (4.7 miles from Dharamshala) is the Gyuto monastery , where you can get a glimpse into Buddhist tantric rituals and traditions. Nearby is the supposedly 500-year-old Aghanjar Mahadev temple; also dedicated to Lord Shiva, it draws many devotees who seek spirituality and serenity. At a 1.9-mile distance from the Mahadev temple is the Norbulingka monastery.

Located on the banks of the rivulet Bindusaras, the Chinmaya Tapovan , Sidhbari (5 miles from Dharamshala) is the perfect place to attend spiritual classes and meditate. The ashram complex includes a Rama temple; meditation hall; 30-foot-high statue of Lord Hanuman; and the samadhi hall of Swami Chinmayananda, a noted exponent of the Bhagavad Gita.

A detour from Sidhbari takes one to Kangra valley (12 miles from Dharamshala). Perched high on a hill overlooking this valley is the Kangra fort; considered one of the oldest forts in India, it offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Don't miss the 8th-century Masrur rock-cut temples, around 21 miles from the Kangra fort and 25 miles from Dharamshala.

Learn pottery at India's first pottery studio, Andretta artist village, which is around 28 miles from Dharamshala and near Palampur and Bir Billing. While you're here, you may want to visit the 13-century Baijnath temple, where Lord Shiva is prayed to as the god of physicians.

Dharamshala is also the perfect place to complete the pilgrimage circuit road tour of ancient and revered temples, including Bajreshwari temple in Kangra and Chamunda Devi temple near Palampur.

Foods to Try

Apart from the regular north-Indian fare, Dharamshala is famous for momos ; thukpas (Tibetan noodle soup), and hot tea with ginger, honey, and lemon. There are numerous food stalls and restaurants across town where you can find all of the above.

Where to Stay

There is no dearth of accommodation in and around Dharamshala. From guesthouses to homestays and five-star properties to dormitories, this Himachal town caters to every pocket. The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department Corporation (HPTDC) runs government-owned guesthouses and hotels at different locations around town; online bookings are available and room rates start at around $22 a day.

The five-star Hyatt Regency at Dharamkot is a 20-minute uphill drive from Dharamshala. With well-appointed rooms and an in-house restaurant that serves international and Indian cuisine, it offers exceptional comfort amidst luxury, plus stunning views of the snow-capped mountains.

The tea plantations of Dharamshala and Palampur are quite famous, and many of them conduct guided tours. If you fancy staying in a beautiful resort with a revolving restaurant and tea plantation views, then look no further than RS Sarovar Portico in the beautiful town of Palampur (22 miles away from Dharamshala, near the Gopalpur zoo). Room rates start at $53 (excluding taxes).

However, if you plan to stay in a typical Himachali architecturally-styled home, then your best bet is the boutique property of The 4Rooms . It's run by Frank Schlichtmann, an Indo-German artist who also manages the 4tables cafe, located a stone's throw away from the property. It's located in the village of Gunehar, around 42 miles from Dharamshala and close to the paragliding site of Bir Billing.

Getting There

To get to Dharamshala, you'll first need to get to Kangra, which is 8 miles away. You can take a domestic flight from Delhi to Gaggal airport in Kangra; alternatively, you could board a train that takes you to Pathankot, then hop on a toy train that chugs through a scenic route on the way to Kangra.

From Kangra, you can either drive up to Dharamshala in a hired taxi or get into a comfortable minibus. If you're on a budget, you can board a government or private Volvo bus and travel directly from Delhi to Dharamshala.

History And Culture Of Dharamshala

How to travel to dharamshala, best time to travel to dharamshala, getting around dharamshala and mcleodganj, breaking stereotypes about dharamshala, go check out, a guide to exploring dharamshala.

If you’re daydreaming at work about a break in the mountains, a place where you can unwind, someplace you can just get away, then Dharamshala is where you want to be. Surrounded by the pristine, snow-clad mountain ranges, Dharamshala is a hit with all kinds of travelers. What better place than to relax amidst the mighty Dhauladhar mountain ranges, surrounded by pretty arching deodar and cedar trees? This Dharamshala travel guide will answer pretty much all of your questions if you’re planning a holiday here.

dharamshala, dharamsala

For those craving adventures, again, the Dhauladhar range offers access to many interesting treks that are easy to start from Dharamshala.

Dharamshala is also the seat of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, and the Tibetan Government in Exile is also based out of Dharamshala. The Tibetan influence is easy to spot with all the beautiful monasteries spread across the Kangra Valley. With a plethora of great Middle-Eastern, Tibetan, and Himachali food options, the food and cafe culture in Dharamshala is also growing steadily in prominence.

Nestled in the Kangra Valley, surrounded by the Dhauladhar mountain ranges, Dharamshala has been home to the Gorkha regiment of the Indian Army for the longest time. The mountain town was a popular hill station among the British officers stationed in Delhi ; they would frequent Dharamshala for respite from Delhi’s extreme heat in the summer months.

Dharamshala, Dharamsala

Since 1959, Dharamshala has become home to the Tibetan community in exile, the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhists had to seek refuge in India and was allowed to settle down in McLeodganj in the upper parts of Dharamshala. The Dalai Lama has established the Tibetan Government in Exile in McLeodganj. He also established the Namgyal Monastery, the personal monastery of the Dalai Lama.

dharamshala, mcleodganj

Thousands of Tibetan exiles have found a home in McLeodganj, and since Dharamshala has always been relevant in Buddhism. You’re likely to find monasteries throughout the region, with some built as early as the 15th century.

Dharamshala is not just a town, but also a district that comprises smaller towns like McLeodganj, Dharamkot, Bhagsu, and Triund. These villages are gateways to great hikes in the Dhauladhar and also make for a great spot to view the birds of Kangra Valley.

Getting To Dharamshala By Air

Flying into Dharamshala is an option from Delhi and Jaipur . Kangra Airport, which is the closest to Dharamshala, lies approximately 15 kilometers away. You can choose to fly into Amritsar and drive about four and a half hours to get to Dharamshala.

Getting To Dharamshala By Train

To be honest, Dharamshala doesn’t enjoy great rail connectivity; the two closest railway stations to Dharamshala, Pathankot Junction, and Amritsar Junction are 3 and 4 and a half hours away respectively. So, traveling by road or air is the best option. Although the scenic view makes the drive worth it.

Getting To Dharamshala By Road

Dharamshala is well connected by road to Delhi, Amritsar and most other big cities in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand . Most buses are overnight buses; there are also a few day buses, but we recommend the overnight buses as the congestion on the narrow winding Himachali roads is lesser. The buses can be booked online on the Himachal State Transport Corporation website.

It’s always a good time to explore Dharamshala. The summer months from March to June are extremely pleasant and are arguably the best time to visit. But the winter months can be appealing too!

Winter in Dharamshala and McLeodganj can be quite extreme and most guest houses aren’t really equipped to help you combat the heat. If you’re on a budget and expect to have a heater or have access to hot water at all times, then winter may not be the time for you. Dharamshala in the monsoons can be very wet and not conducive for heavy treks but the place is quite green, serene and very pleasant.

Dharamshala, Dharamsala, Mcleodganj

Finding a taxi, rickshaw or bus in Dharamshala isn’t hard at all as the town itself is at the base of the valley. As you make the ascent further up, you’ll come across smaller towns like McLeodganj and Dharamkot. We recommend exploring these towns on foot, as it’s not only the easiest option but also the most efficient way of exploring these cute mountain towns at your leisure.

“Dharamshala and McLeodganj are the same.”

While they’re technically the same places, Dharamshala in its entirety is a district. It’s made up of a lot of hamlets like Dharamkot, Triund, Bhagsu and McLeodganj. And while you’re visiting Dharamshala, you’re likely to spend a lot more time in these hamlets (which are all a part of Dharamshala).

Namgyal Monastery

Namgyal Monastery is also called The Dalai Lama’s temple and is the personal monastery of the Dalai Lama. Founded in the 16th century, after the arrival of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans, the monastery was relocated to Dharamshala in the 1960s. The Namgyal Monastery houses 200 monks to this day and is the most prominent monastery in Tibetan Buddhism.

While the monastery may be deemed a bit simple from the outside, the place is known to have an extremely calming effect on people. Try making it for the evening prayers to witness the chanting of the monks and maybe even interact with them after for life lessons and perspectives.

Tsuglagkhang Complex

This is the official residence of the Dalai Lama. If you plan well in advance, you may even be able to meet with the Dalai Lama and attend one of his discourses (Tip: check the schedule on their official website to see if there are discourses around the time when you’re going.)

Should the Dalai Lama’s discourse not be scheduled for when you are in Dharamshala, you can still explore the complex and it’s definitely worth a visit!

Explore Bhagsu And Its Delicacy

The local delicacy of the Bhagsu hamlet and all of Dharamshala is the Bhagsu Cake; it’s the ultimate sweet dish. It has an extremely buttery taste to it and is loved by locals and tourists alike.

Norbulingka Institute

The Norbulingka institute in McLeodganj offers a different perspective and lets you delve deeper into the culture and traditions of Tibetans. You can not only visit but also participate in the different workshops that are held at the institute. Try your hands at woodcarving, wood painting, applique, Thanga painting, etc and play a part in conserving centuries-old art that has been passed down through generations.

If workshops aren’t your thing then walk around the huge campus. The architecture would certainly make you feel like you’re in Tibet. Check out their gardens, museum, cafe, and local shop that has many artifacts on display. The institute is open from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm daily, but the workshops are closed on Sundays and the second Saturdays of the month.

Bhagsu Waterfall

Bhagsu is another small town in Dharamshala like McLeodganj and you can either trek upto Bhagsu by road or the waterfall route. To make it accessible to most tourists, a fair length of the trek has steps alongside the waterfall.

For those you wish to hike further, you’ve to climb up rocks and boulders which make it more of an adventure. The trek can get difficult if traveling in the monsoons because as you go higher, it tends to get colder. But it’s worth the effort as the view from the top is spectacular. Right at the top, there’s a cafe, where you can chill and reward yourself with a delicious bowl of Maggi or hot chocolate! The hike to Bhagsu waterfall is a day trek of about 3-4 hrs.

This is a two-day trek that starts from McLeodganj going through Dharamkot and the Galu Devi temple up to Triund, which is at an altitude of 9,500 ft. Wake up to the snow-kissed Himalayan ranges that glow orange under the sun; the Dhauladhar mountains on one side and the Kangra Valley on the other. Dharamshala Travel Guide – Things to Do and Travel Tips

Nestled amidst the majestic Himalayan ranges, Dharamshala is a tranquil and captivating hill station that holds a special place in my heart. I had almost swooned at the sight of Dharamshala’s serene ambiance, lush greenery, and spiritual aura! On returning, I prepared this Dharamshala Travel guide with list of best things to do, places to visit in and Kangra and travel tips. Dharamshala is a perfect destination for seekers of tranquility and nature enthusiasts alike.

It won’t be wrong to say Dharamshala is a Haven in the Himalayas ! It is with a sense of anticipation I embarked on my trip to Dharamshala. The town is divided into two distinct parts: the lower region, known as Dharamshala, and the upper region called McLeod Ganj. While Dharamshala serves as the administrative headquarters, McLeod Ganj is renowned as the residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the heart of the Tibetan community in exile.

Dharamshala Travel Guide

Kangra Valley nestled in lap of Dhauladhar range of Himalayas

If you are wondering what makes Dharamshala special , let me explain its unique characteristics: the presence of the Tibetan government-in-exile infuses the town with a rich Tibetan culture and spirituality, drawing visitors from around the world who seek solace and enlightenment. The tranquil monasteries, prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, and the melodic chants of Buddhist hymns create an atmosphere of serenity that envelops you the moment you arrive.

To most tourists, tourism in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh is limited to visiting Dharamshala. I know many who landed in Kangra Airport (also called Gaggal Airport) and headed straight to Dharamshala. While Dharamshala, a quaint town of Kangra district, is no doubt a top tourist attraction, there are lot other places to visit in Kangra. Read on to know the places to visit in Kangra.

Things to Do in Dharamshala Himachal

Exploring ancient monasteries, immersing myself in the serenity of the mountains, or indulging in the flavors of the region, Dharamshala offered a tapestry of experiences. I am glad I got the opportunity to visit Kangra and Dharamshala.

Handheld by the efficient team of newly launched luxury hotel – Hyatt Regency Dharamshala , I explored the various Dharamshala tourist destinations. Here is a list of things to do in and around Dharamshala with a Kangra Tourism map.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls

Start the day, when you are full of energy and the sun not so harsh, with a mild trek to Bhagsu Waterfalls. Barely 20 m in height, the scenic setting of the waterfall is what makes it a mesmerizing sight. If you plan to halt for breakfast and some bird photography, the entire experience can take 2 hours.

By walk: Less than 900m of hilly terrain it will take 20mins. By Car: There is route by car which takes you closer and faster.

No tickets are required, open from 8 AM to 7 PM on all days.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls is the easiest trek from Kangra. You can check the following moderate and difficult camping tours from Kangra district. Triund Trek – moderate – 2800m, 9km gradual trek Winch Camp trek – moderate, parts of the trek is steep – 2440m, trekkers rate this as the most fragrant trek among all! Dhauladhar Round trek – difficult – 7 to 8 days, trek through forests, bird watching and interacting with tribal folks and locals enroute.

Bhagsunag Temple

For the spiritually inclined souls, the Bhagsunag temple at the start of the trek makes an ideal halt. This temple was damaged extensively in a cloudburst caused floods in the region in 2007. Bhagsunag Temple was rebuilt with help of Gorkha Rifles regiment of Indian Army .

Please follow dress code if you intend to offer prayers at the temple. No photography allowed inside however plenty of photo opportunities just outside the temple. There is a natural fresh water spring falling into a tank, devotees take a dip here.

Open timings – after sunrise to before sunset. No tickets required.

Other temples of Kangra: Brijeshwari Temple – 1500 years old Baijnath Temple – 9 th century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Masroor temple – 9 th century rock cut temple like Ellora Temple, dedicated to Lord Ram.

Norbulingka Institute

This institute works towards conserving the unique identity of Tibetans and their sacred Tibetan traditions. They impart training in various disciplines.

Stepping into the Norbulingka Institute was like stepping into a mini Japanese garden with sounds of gurgling water, chirping birds and giggling children. It was a different world! A guided tour around the institute introduced us to the artisans getting trained in art forms like Thangka Painting, Thangka Applique, statue making, wood carving, wood painting, tailoring and weaving. I was most impressed by their Doll Museum!

At the heart of the institute there is an imposing statue of seated Buddha. The face is made of pure gold and the arms are gold coated.

While the ticket costs 110 INR (50INR for locals) the guided tour is free. The guide explains the different processes involved and the various courses conducted by the institute which I found really beneficial. It can be a little overwhelming to tour on your own and just seeing the processes.

Open Timings: The Institute is open on all days 9 AM to 5.30 PM. The workshops and office are closed on all Sundays and 2 nd Saturday of each month.

Monasteries of Kangra Valley

Dharamshala in Kangra is home to many world-famous monasteries. You can make an exclusive tour just to visit the monasteries or just choose few to get a feel of the power of silence prevailing in these monasteries. Here are a couple of them we visited.

His Holiness Dalai Lama’s Main Temple

Located in McLeod Ganj, this monastery is very close to the residence of Dalai Lama . He visits this temple twice or thrice every year to preach and bless as locals and tourists throng to hear Him. During rest of the year also the temple witnesses moderate crowd of tourists. You can indulge in meditation in the hall of this temple as long as you wish. A small counter within the temple sells prayer beads.

Turning the prayer wheels as you go around the temple is another fav of the locals there. It was the first time I did the act of turning the wheels in clock-wise direction as I went around chanting Om Mani Padme Hum!

A museum right at the entrance has rare photographs of Dalai Lama, how he escaped from Tibet . Tibetan culture, martyrs and others subjects too are on display here.  Do plan your visit time to see short video about the culture played in the museum. During His Holiness Dalai Lama’s visit here the security check process is stricter.

Gyuto Tantric Monastery Temple

Gyuto Monastery is one of the best places to visit in Dharamshala. With its yellow exteriors and backdrop of snow capped mountains, the monastery looked stunning. I stood transfixed at the first sight and secretly desired to just stand and watch for hours.

This monastery imparts education in tantric rituals and Buddhist philosophy. Gyuto Monastery was founded in Tibet in 1474 by the main disciple of the first Dalai Lama, Jetsun Kunga Dhondup. In 1959 after the Chinese invasion, the monastery was re-established in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh India.

When we arrived at the monastery the students were having their recess. Young kid monks in their maroon robes were indulging in a game of cricket, some chasing around each other, while some were busy snacking.

No tickets required and tour time is around half an hour. Photography allowed.

Kangra Fort

And Kangra district has a superb destination for architecture and history lovers. They can head to Kangra Fort and wind up the day capturing a romantic sunset there. Kangra Fort was badly mutilated and dismantled in an earthquake in 1905. Much of its glory came crashing down then. It is sad that no government has taken up the task of restructuring and conferring its past glory.

A facade of temple is all that remains of a beautiful Lakshmi Narayan temple that stood there once. The seven floors of the palace that stood tall on top of the fort, home to several generations of kings and queens – nothing remains of that except the plan! Read more: Exploring Kangra Fort

Masrur Caves in Kangra

Masrur Temples also referred to as Masroor Temples or Rock-cut Temples at Masrur, an early 8th-century complex of rock-cut Hindu temples, is one of the top places to visit in Kangra. The temples face northeast, towards the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas and have a North Indian Nagara architecture style.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls looks amazing and I would love to go for this trek. Thanks for sharing all the trek details to reach these waterfalls. Also the natural springs of Bhagsunag temple look interesting and also Brijeshwari Temple which is 1500 years old and the 9th century one – Baijnath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Thanks for sharing all tips.

Kangra Valley sounds like a great place for a retreat. I especially like the trek to the Bhagsu Waterfalls. The monastries would be great for a culture shot. Gyuto Monastery would top the list for me with its gorgeous mountainous backdrop.

' data-srcset=

Oh my goodness, I visited the Himalayas a few years back and can’t seem to get it out of my head! Everything about it is so serene. Would love to go back and visit Kangra. Though, I wonder whether the luxury hotel would defeat some of the peace that people who visit seek?

' data-srcset=

Would really love to check out the Kangra Valley. The man-made buildings like the temples do look stunning but for me its the natural landscape. We huge mountain ranges, beautiful valley and waterfalls, this looks like an ideal hiking place in the warmer months.

' data-srcset=

I actually have never heard about Kangra district of Himachal but it looks like a wonderful place with so much to do ! For me even the mountains view would be enough but wow there are other things to see! Amazing! I must have plan a trip there one day!

' data-srcset=

The area around Kangra Valley really does have a lot to offer. Gorgeous photo of the Himalayas. I love waterfalls and the idea of having breakfast next to the Bhagsu Waterfall. It would be really special to visit the Dalai Lama’s Main Temple.

' data-srcset=

I can sort of understand why people might head straight to Dharamshala. But good to know there is also lots to do in Kangra Valley. Visiting waterfalls is always a great draw for us. Good to know you can walk or get closer by car to see Bhagsunag Waterfalls. There are definitely some interesting monasteries to visit. I love that mountain backdrop at the Gyuto Tantric Monastery. Sounds like the Hyatt was a great base to explore Kangra Valley for the day.

' data-srcset=

The waterfall is so pretty – and you’re right about setting out in the morning before the sun and heat hit. The fort looks so interesting to explore. I’m a big fan of relics and stone structures. The monasteries look interesting, too. I love that you highlighted some of the lesser, yet still worthy, attractions!

Hi Indrani, thanks for the lovely blog on Kangra. You have mentioned of a lot of things that I was unaware of, for example the newly launched luxury hotel over there Bhagsu Waterfalls, and many more like Norbulingka Institute and all. I love the Tibetan Buddhist temple and HH Dalai Lama’s residence.

The best time to visit Dharamshala

By Arundhati Ail

The best time to visit Dharamshala

Amidst the soothing chants of crimson-robed Tibetan monks and views of the mighty Dhauladhar range, peace comes easy in Dharamshala. The best time to visit Dharamshala depends on whether you’re looking for days of scenic treks and outdoor explorations or the unmatched feeling of waking up to snow-capped peaks outside your hotel window. A quick break from Delhi and Chandigarh, this is a place you will find yourself longing to return to even after you have explored all the major monasteries, cafés and viewpoints. Here’s a handy guide on the best time to visit Dharamshala.

When is the best time to visit Dharamshala? When is the off season in Dharamshala? Temperature throughout the year How many days are enough for a trip to Dharamshala? How to reach Dharamshala? Plan your stay

When is the best time to visit Dharamshala?

The best time to visit Dharamshala is during the spring and summer months between mid-February and June. This is when the weather is at its most pleasant, with the temperatures ranging between 18°C and 35°C. Clear skies allow for beautiful views of the lush green peaks and ideal conditions to spend days outdoors in Dharamshala and neighbouring hill station McLeodganj. Visit the nearby Norbulingka Institute for a dose of Tibetan art and culture, or spend days trekking through cedar forests and cobbled streets. This is also a great time to try the Triund Trek which begins in the nearby Dharamkot and lasts 4-6 hours. You can also end the short but steep trek by camping out for a night to enjoy the views of Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar range. If you can brave colder temperatures, winter is also a great time to visit Dharamshala. Temperatures drop to single digits in the winter and the peaks turn from green to snowy white.

When is the off season in Dharamshala?

The monsoon months between July and September are off season in Dharamshala. While temperatures remain pleasant during this time, heavy rainfall often leads to landslides and road blockages, which make exploring the hillside town difficult. While the natural surroundings in the region are especially beautiful during this time, there’s a good chance you will only be able to enjoy the view from inside your hotel or homestay , given the risk of road closures in the monsoon.

Temperature throughout the year

March-June: 18°C-35°C July to September: 18°C-22°C November to February: 4°C-7°C

Winter in Dharamshala

How many days are enough for a trip to Dharamshala?

Four to five days are ideal for a trip to Dharamshala. This will give you enough time to visit all the major tourist attractions, like the Norbulingka Institute, Kareri Lake, Namgyal Monastery and the HPCA cricket stadium. To immerse yourself in Tibetan culture, stay at Chonor House or Norling House, a boutique property traditionally designed and operated by the Norbulingka Institute. There are also a handful of luxury hotels like Hyatt Regency Dharamshala Resort, which boast stunning views of the Dhauladhar Range and surrounding forests. Most tourists also visit neighbouring McLeodganj, but remember that the hill station can get pretty crowded during peak season. While the drive from Dharamshala to McLeodganj is just about 30 minutes, traffic jams on the route are becoming increasingly common during peak season, extending the journey into a few hours. If you’re looking for a hill station close to Dharamshala that is relatively offbeat, drive about an hour to Palampur to explore its beautiful tea estates and picnic by a crystal clear stream called Neugal Khad. When the temperature dips, take a dip in the heated indoor swimming pool at Hyatt Regency Dharamshala Resort or in the in-room jacuzzi in your chalet at Echor Mandara Tree Villa, Dharamshala.

How to reach Dharamshala?

Fly to Delhi and then to Kangra airport, which is a 30-minute drive away from Dharamshala. Dharamshala is about a 10-hour drive from Delhi , about a six-hour drive from Chandigarh and about a five-hour drive from Amritsar.
