Disney’s Animal Kingdom Behind-The-Scenes Tours: Reviews, Breakdowns, and Know-Before-You-Go
Animal Kingdom has a number of behind-the-scenes tours available, all of which give you private, up-close experiences with a select set of animals. In this article, you’ll find a breakdown of each of the four tours, as well as general information on how the tours work, what you can expect, and important items to know before you go!
Important Information
To start with the basics: All of the tours offered require separate theme park admission and until January 2024, a park pass reservation for Animal Kingdom (or a park hopper for the later tours). All tours occur rain or shine, but may be cancelled or adjusted in the event of thunderstorms. And all tours do not technically guarantee that you’ll see animals, since animals are never forced to do anything or go anywhere at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It would be extremely unlikely (we’d say borderline impossible) that you are unable to see any animals during your tour, but that is a disclaimer that Disney gives!
Tour check-in is at the Curiosity Animal Tours kiosk, located across from the entrance to Kilimanjaro Safaris. Be sure to arrive early, as late arrivals typically cannot be accommodated and you’ll usually need to fill out a waiver before heading out!
Different tours have different levels of “backstage” viewing. For Wild Africa Trek and Savor the Savanna, you go into areas of Kilimanjaro Safari that most guests can’t see, but you’re still onstage. For Caring for Giants and Up Close with Rhinos, you do go into a fully backstage area, so just something to keep in mind with little ones! Note that when you are in a backstage area, no photos or videos are allowed.
All tours typically have discounts available for Annual Passholders and/or DVC members and are available to book 60 days before the start of your trip. This means that if you’re staying from Friday to Tuesday at an on-property resort, you can book for your entire stay starting 60 days from Friday, even though Tuesday is 64 days out. If nothing is available, keep checking back – sometimes, tours aren’t posted until 30-45 days out!
Savor the Savanna and Wild Africa Trek both have food components. They are able to accommodate any dietary restrictions, you’ll just let them know at check-in. Alcoholic beverages are also provided for anyone over the age of 21.
Now let’s go over key info for each of the individual tours:
Caring For Giants
Availability: Daily, typically at 9:00AM, 10:00AM, 1:00PM, and 2:00PM
Length: 1 hour
Cost: $35 per person
Restrictions: Guests must be 4 years of age or older and guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult
On this tour, you’ll hop on a bus and take a quick 10 minute drive to a viewing area in the back of the African Elephant enclosure, where you’ll be able to view the herd from 80-100 feet away. Throughout the tour, the guide will provide information about the elephants and their care at Animal Kingdom. The tour is extremely freeform and is heavily based around the questions asked, so definitely come prepared with a few!
Elephant seen during Caring For Giants tour
Up Close With Rhinos
Availability: Daily, typically at 11:00AM
Cost: $45 per person
Similar to Caring for Giants, on this tour, you’ll take a quick 10-minute bus ride to a backstage viewing area for the White Rhinos. During the tour, the guide will provide information about the White Rhinos and their care at Animal Kingdom, focused primarily on answering your questions (so be sure to bring some!) While most of the tour will be from a distance, the tour does end with getting to touch a rhino in their enclosure!
Two important things to note about this tour: 1. Since it only runs once per day, it is typically the hardest to book 2. The tour takes place entirely backstage, so no photos and videos are allowed at all throughout the tour.
Savor the Savanna
Availability: Daily, typically at 3:15PM and 4:30PM
Length: 2 hours
Cost: $174 per person
Restrictions: Guests must be 8 years of age or older and guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult
This tour is the most relaxing of the four! You’ll hop on a special Kilimanjaro Safari truck and take a special safari tour, stopping part of the way to meet with a keeper who will tell you about how they care for the animals on the savanna. Then, you’ll make your way to a pavilion at the top of the savanna, where you’ll have food from Tusker House and Tiffins waiting for you, as well as alcoholic beverages. You’ll get to sit and enjoy your refreshments while you learn about the animals and their care (including asking questions!), before finishing off the safari at the end.
Wild Africa Trek
Availability: Daily, typically at 8:45AM, 10:15AM, 11:45AM, and 12:30PM
Length: 3 hours
Cost: $199 per person
Restrictions: Guests must be 8 years of age or older and at least 48 inches tall. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must be between 45 and 300 pounds with the harness gear on.
This tour involves many parts! You’ll receive a harness and everything will need to be strapped to you – if your cell phone as a case, you can get a phone holder to bring and they’ll provide a new water bottle that you can keep at the end of the tour. Small cameras that hang around the neck are also allowed, as are hats, ears, and sunglasses. Anything else will need to be stored in a locker!
During the tour, you’ll watch a hippo feeding, cross two suspended bridges over a hippo enclosure and a crocodile enclosure, and get a special crocodile viewing. The guides have lots of prepared information to share, but are also happy to answer any questions! You’ll then finish by going to the same pavilion as Savor the Savanna to enjoy food from Tusker House and Tiffins, as well as alcoholic beverages.
Hippo encounter during the Wild Africa Trek tour
All of the tours at Animal Kingdom are incredible – we’ve done all except Up Close with Rhinos, and plan to do that soon as well! It’s hard to say which is “best”, as it really depends on what you’re looking for. Our recommendation for someone just starting out with tours would be Caring For Giants, and if you’re a huge Animal Kingdom-lover, Wild Africa Trek!

Day 11: Backstage Safari at Animal Kingdom
Today was our Animal Kingdom Day—including our first time on Backstage Safari! We got up bright and early to be there in time for rope drop so we could see some of the park before our tour. Today’s update is jammy packed with photos, so… hope ya like animals!
OK, nobody forget where we parked!
…Or what locker we used!
For once we took our time at rope drop, stopping to look at the animals at the front of the park and talk to the handlers who are there to distract you from the Dash to Everest.
"Hey, lemme outta here!"
THEN we dashed to Everest. We got FASTPASSES and also rode it twice in a row!
The track was damaged AGAIN! They really got get some yeti repellent or something…
I think this might be my favorite part! Lots to look at, plenty of anticipation…
After that, Patrick traded some pins and we meandered over to Kilimanjaro Safaris.
They should sell these…
We waited in line for the safari for about 5 minutes, but it was moving too slow. So we decided to skip it and wander around while we waited for the reservation at Tusker House I’d made using my iPhone while we stood in line!
Patrick looooves the naked mole rats…
I dunno how Patrick was getting these shots—this one looks like he's leaning right over the little guy!
Aw, I love these guys… they're so goofy-lookin'!
I also love the area where the gorillas live—so lush!
What's better than a close-up of a flower…?
… A close-up of a flower with a BUTTERFLY on it!
OK, maybe that was too many close-ups of a flower with a butterfly on it…
This gorilla does not seem to know the meaning of the phrase "get my good side"…
Oh, we're back to this, are we?
I really really wish these treats tasted as good as they look!
Tusker House is not exactly my favorite place to eat, what with its being a buffet and all, but the pickings in Animal Kingdom are slim and the theming is great. Plus, Patrick had never had more than a glance inside, so it was fun because it was new for him.
Too bad we couldn't use this… I think we gave it to some other guests. I hope we did!
As usual, I made sure to document every anonymous platter of food, but somehow I overlooked their signs, so… you’ll have to make it up!
"Desserty thingies"
A classic African specialty, "peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches"
"Clammy cold cuts"
"Meat"
Oh wait—here’s a sign!
My own favorite indigenous dish, corn dog nuggets!
After lunch we went to the meeting spot for Backstage Safari, which I can’t remember where it was. I think it was toward the front of the park. Our guide got us all fixed up with earphones and then took us backstage to get on an air-conditioned mini bus that took us from place to place—essential at the park with the biggest backstage area at Disney World. Unfortunately, because we were backstage most of the time, we weren’t allowed to take pictures. But I will show you the private safari we got to go on.
I liked our guide immediately. She was so sharp, so knowledgeable, so friendly and a great instructor. As we started the drive to our first tour stop, she pointed out and explained everything we saw backstage, and she even addressed some of the rumors about the addition of an Australia “land” in some of the unused space. (Of course now we all know how THAT turned out …)
I was very excited when our guide said she was being trained to lead the Wild Africa Trek, which was still in the planning stages at the time. We didn’t end up getting her when we did that tour for our anniversary a few months later, but our guides were just as good.
Our first stop was the kitchen where they prepare all the animal food, which was really cool till they showed us the frozen dead bunnies. After that I was kinda traumatized and just wanted to get to the next part. Next they bused us to the ginormous giraffe enclosure, where we got to stand in the blazing sun and peep through the bars at a giraffe and her baby. We also got to go inside the barn where she sleeps at night. I think maybe the giraffe replaced the white rhino on the tour, who you used to get to pet. Giraffes are apparently not as pettable…
From there we went to the bird house and met a zoologist who told us all about the birds there while one of our tourmates nearly passed out (and there weren’t even frozen dead bunnies!). Our guide and her assistant were all over the situation, and the girl eventually decided to spend the rest of the tour sitting in the air-conditioned minibus. From there we went to the elephant enclosure, which was HUGE! We got to see inside where they go at night, and we learned about two female elephants who have become BFFs and always have to sleep next to each other at night—awwwwwww!
I’m not sure where in the tour our private safari was, so I’m putting it here. Our guide sat up front and took over narrating from the driver, giving us extra tidbits about all the animals we saw (none of which I can remember now—sorry!!!).
This part was a bit like what we eventually experienced on the Wild Africa Trek, but we didn’t get to linger as long at the stops as they let you on the trek. Hence the blurry photos…
Along the way we got to see the future site of the outpost where you get snacks and make bathroom breaks during the Wild Africa Trek.
Future home of Arco!
LION! Lionlionlionlion! I see a lion!
Pumbaaaaaaa!
Ostrich: "What…? This IS my best side!"
Our last stop was the veterinary lab out at Rifiki’s Planet Watch. Thankfully for squeamish me, there was no surgery going on at the time. After our tour, we were put in a conference room with some salty snacks to watch two videos and fill out a post-tour survey. We also learned a little bit more about Wild Africa Trek and were each given a plastic mug that said Backstage Safari on it. Of course we gave the tour glowing reviews—I was only disappointed not to have any animal interaction at all. I just wanted to pet something… a lizard, a bug—anything!
At the end of the tour we were released into Rafiki’s Planet Watch, one of my least favorite areas of the park. They were having an owl demonstration, though, so we stayed for that and got to meet the owl after!
I guess you wouldn't really call this "meeting" the owl… more like "sitting in front of it as it completely ignores you…"
This mural is entitled "Mostly Animals You Won't See at Disney's Animal Kingdom"
Then it was back on the train to the rest of the park. Actually, we did score a couple shots of backstage for you along the way!
OoooOOOOoooh… backstage!!!
We only had about half an hour left before closing, so we went off in search of more animals, with a quick stop to shoot a spot where weddings have been known to occur at Animal Kingdom…
Not involved with Animal Kingdom weddings…
Where are all the bats?
There's a bat!
Hmmm… this might be a tie with GorillaVille as my favorite spot in Animal Kingdom…
"NUTS to GorillaVille!"
"Where the H did my kid go…?"
They call this "The Poop Zone"…
Disney should sell these in the gift shops too
"Down the hatch!"
Geez, are they EVER gonna finish building this place?
While we were wandering, I decided to ask about the Picnic in the Park program they launched to great fanfare a couple of years ago but which seems to have disappeared without a trace recently. Turns out there’s one trace, a cold case full of sandwiches at the Beastly Bazaar gift shop.
I really loved the idea of this program—it’s a shame we never got to try it before they deep-sixed all the hot food.
When you’re among the last to leave the park, Disney really rolls out the red carpet… a carpet that points you directly toward the exit, that is!
Back to the Beach Club, where we had a little break and got spiffed up for our dinner date with the Roots at Artist Point.
So, readers who are at WDW right now, are they selling all the same Halloween merchandise this year?
Geez, we must’ve been super-early for dinner—this is a whole lotta lobby pix!
We were really eager to get to spend some quality, non-photography time with Nathensey to hear all about their *real* safari to *real* Africa that summer to shoot their friends’ wedding . We also wanted to introduce them to one of our favorite restaurants at WDW—Artist Point.
Loved the black sea salt on the butter!
I'm looking all over the menu from that night and can't find these anywhere, so they must've been a special… Pork Belly with Floppy Veggies, perhaps?
Smoky Portobello Soup with Roasted Shitakes and Chive Oil
Char-grilled Buffalo Striploin Steak with Three-Cheese Mac, Cider-Glazed Brussels Sprouts, and Syrah Gastrique
The buffalo was a bit too charred for my taste but otherwise quite good. The macaroni and cheese was dry—what’s up with THAT?
We had a great time, even though the food wasn’t quite up to the usual Artist Point standard (maybe cuz it was Monday night and the head chef wasn’t in the kitchen?). Also, we had a good chuckle over the way the server, when asked for elaboration on certain dishes, would read us the menu descriptions verbatim as if that answered our questions.
After dinner we all went back to the Beach Club for dessert at Beaches and Cream. Jensey and I must’ve taken a powder along the way…
We'll use a representational shot for this part
Geez, guys, we weren't gone THAT long!!!
At Beaches & Cream we filled our tummies with all kinds of deliciousness and talked each other’s ears off until none of us could keep our eyes open anymore—the best way to end a Disney day!

So, I’m still stalking your trip reports…
My comments here
1) That buffet has naan and baklava? This might be the first buffet I’ve ever seen (except the $7 sushi buffet near my house whose sushi sucks- but, uh, seven bucks) that I could actually eat my money’s worth at. Then again, at Disney prices…that would be a lot of baklava…
2) Red Pandas are my absolute favorite. The first time I took DH to a zoo with them I was SO excited, but he had never heard of them- and when we got to it, he said “uh, that’s a racoon, I was expecting a Panda.” I was so sad. I was even more sad at the San Diego zoo where the red panda’s are right across from the Giant Pandas, and the GPs have this gigantic line and no one looks at the RP. I spent some time reassuring it that it was better.
Totally better! When we went to the SD zoo, I thought the arrangement was great because then you can spend as much time as you want with the Red Pandas while everyone else is waiting in line for the Giant Pandas.
Isn’t the wedding venue used for a photopass shoot with a couple of monkeys (whose character names really do escape me and I’m too lazy to go fetch DDs autograph book) I vaguely recall one of them may be a king and doesnt actually do autographs cos his hands are too big.
Yes, I think it is! King Louie and…. uh… the other one!
For location alone, I’d have to say right up there. We spent the last day of our trip at Food & Wine so it allowed to get every last second in the park. Plus, you can’t beat getting shot out of a Pirate ship!
I feel the same way about buffets. You pay the big bucks and then feel compelled to plop everything under the sneeze guard on the plate. A Gloppy mess!
BTW, had our first stay at Beach Club this weekend. I could see the big ball from our balcony! *Sigh*
Oooh! Jealous! So where does Beach Club rank for you now among the Disney resorts?
Your guide for the Backstage Safari was one of our guides on the Wild Africa Trek, and she was great (but I can’t remember her name)! Disney trains them very well and/or they seem to really enjoy their jobs. Love the pics! Patrick is getting up there with the Roots in terms of good pictures!
Hey, thanks! I’ll pass along the compliment!
Hi! I really really love your blog. All of my friends and i read it.
Well, thanks! I’m so glad you guys enjoy it!
Did you die a little on the inside too with the Avatar announcement?
I did! And I died laughing at all the pithy comments about it on Twitter! And then Patrick sorta talked me into the idea, which he thinks is great because the only good thing about Avatar was the way the planet and all its creatures looked. He says there are some good opportunities to really make something interesting of Camp Minnie Mickey, so I guess I’ll hang in there and see if he’s right!
BorkBorkBork
I had no idea there was a statue of Cthulhu in Animal Kingdom! Awesome!
I was there Sept 18-25 this year and didn’t see that purple Snow Queen shirt but the other stuff looked familiar. Can’t wait to read your next installment! Your costumes look amazing.
Oooh! What’s Cthulhu?! (Yes, I’m too lazy to Google…)
Cthulhu is a giant octopus-god from HP Lovecraft’s horror lit!
Oooh! How very hip of Disney to put Cthulhu in Animal Kingdom… 😀
Wow…I have LOADS of comments…lol!
1) I think AK is the most beautiful park to photograph and I am going to have to spend some time there without my four year old niece in tow so I can really explore everything.
2) That’s weird about them not letting you take photos backstage because I just did the Halloween 5K there on 10/1 and all I did was take photos while we were walking ..uh…I mean running!…yeah…running!…back there! LOL The most tragic thing I discovered backstage is that the back of Everest looks like a big building…WHAT?!? Truly amazing that you can’t see that AT ALL from any area guests are normally allowed to be…those clever Imagineers.
3) You can never have too many photos of butterflies on flowers.
4) Anyone else get the feeling that tiger is watching you? Even with his head facing the other way? (Nature is so cool.)
5) “Mealie” cornbread does not sound apetizing…and I love cornbread.
6) Am I the only one who thinks the Tree of Life is all trunk no leaves? It has always looked more like a shrub of life to me.
7) Those shots of the Beach Club and Boardwalk area make me wish I were rich enough to stay there whenever I wanted.
8) Some of that same Halloween merchandise is being sold this year, specifically those lanterns and the Minnie plush. But most of the rest of that looks different from this year’s offerings.
9) I enjoy your trip reports and photos only infinitesimally less than actually going to these places myself!
10) I used my dictionary to make sure I spelled “infinitesimally” right in Comment 9.
😀 OK, 1) I am officially jealous that they let you take pix backstage when we couldn’t, 2) the tiger is definitely watching you, 3) the reason is that the Tree of Life is actually planted upside down and what we’re seeing are the roots, and 4) extra points for using the dictionary! 😉
i’m now really hungry, that’s not good for my diet which only started yesterday.
Guess you’d better switch to the “see food” diet! 😀

I paid $185 for a private safari at Disney World. Up-close interactions with wildlife weren't even the best part.
- I paid $185 to go on a private safari tour in Animal Kingdom at Disney World.
- The ticket included a two-hour safari, African-inspired food, drinks, and a souvenir at the end.
- The experience was top-notch and worth it for the up-close interactions with the animals and guides.
I live 10 minutes away from Disney World and visit the parks frequently, but I'm always learning about new offerings. I recently discovered Savor the Savanna — a two-hour private safari tour at Animal Kingdom.
Although I've experienced the park's 18-minute Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction, I wanted to see what the add-on experience was all about.
Here's what the private safari tour was like.
The Savor the Savanna tickets are limited, so they have to be bought in advance.
There are only 12 tickets available for each Savor the Savanna tour, so they must be booked in advance via the My Disney Experience app or Disney World's website.
The two-hour tour is held at 3:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. every day, weather depending.
I booked a ticket two days in advance for the earlier time and paid $174 before tax. The tour ticket doesn't include park admission, which is required to access this event. Fortunately, I didn't need to buy a park ticket because I had an annual pass.
I checked in at the Curiosity Animal Tours kiosk.
I entered Animal Kingdom and made my way over to the Curiosity Animal Tours kiosk just in time for the 3 p.m. check-in.
Upon arrival, I was asked to sign a waiver.
I had to sign a waiver before the tour that covered topics including medical treatment, insurance, and assumption of risk.
I received a personalized name tag.
I wasn't expecting to receive a name tag when I checked in for the tour, but I was glad I did as I could keep it as a souvenir .
Our safari vehicle was different from the standard Animal Kingdom attraction.
The Kilimanjaro Safaris ride vehicles have seats in horizontal rows, but our private tour vehicle had wooden benches lining the perimeter.
I enjoyed the seating style because it created a welcoming environment.
The vehicle's seating layout created an intimate atmosphere.
Our tour guide , Emma, was friendly and knowledgeable — she encouraged questions and ensured everyone could capture photos.
I liked that we were all able to face each other throughout the experience. It made the tour more intimate.
We had extra time to speak with a park employee working with the giraffes.
At the beginning of our tour, we met John, a park employee who works closely with the giraffes in the savanna.
He shared fun facts about the animals and answered questions in great detail.
Since the vehicle was stopped, people could also stand up and take photos of the giraffes and other nearby animals.
We stopped at the Boma Platform for refreshments and great views of the savanna.
We arrived at the Boma Platform, an enclosure-inspired stop, about 40 minutes into the tour.
Boma is a popular restaurant at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and we were welcomed with a table of similar African-inspired cuisine, including various cheeses , fruits, breads, and salads — the chicken salad was my favorite.
The stop also offered a raised view of the savanna with binoculars for an even closer look at the animals.
Various regional wines were also available to sip on.
Although I don't drink, there was a selection of regional wines available for guests 21 and over.
We could also have complimentary POG juice (pineapple, orange, and guava).
A glass of the fan-favorite POG juice at Disney restaurants can cost upwards of $6, but we were able to have as much as we wanted during the rest stop.
I found the unlimited supply of juice to be a bonus, especially since I don't drink alcohol.
Dessert was my favorite part of the meal.
There were three desserts available at the Boma stop, and the fudge pop was the best dessert I've ever had at Animal Kingdom.
Toward the end of the tour, we had the opportunity to see rhinos up close.
This was my first time seeing a rhino in person, so it was a unique and fun experience .
The tour ended with everyone getting a small souvenir.
In exchange for the lanyard that held my name tag (I could keep the paper part with my name on it), I was gifted a wooden coaster with Savor the Savanna engraved on the front.
Although this tour was pricey, I found it to be worth the value.
Kilimanjaro Safaris is about a 20-minute attraction, but Savor the Savanna is nearly two hours, so I deemed the $185 ticket to be worth it .
I was able to ask many questions and had access to delicious food and unlimited POG juice.
Although the ticket is pretty pricey — especially since it doesn't include park admission — I'd definitely do the tour again for a special occasion.

Five Things to Know About Africa in Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Once you cross into Africa in the Animal Kingdom, you cannot help feeling that you’ve been transported to another continent. With interesting buildings, live entertainment, animals, eats, and even a train station, there’s plenty to explore on your safari in the largest of Animal Kingdom’s lands.
1. Harambe Village is an authentic gateway to many adventures.
You enter Africa through Harambe, a Disneyfied version of a current-day rural African town. What distinguishes Harambe is its understatement: although clearly rural, it has an authentic, lived-in feel. Of all the lands you can visit in the Animal Kingdom, Africa and Harambe offer the most “urban” environment, but they are still a far cry from the completely modern cities that can be found in the real-world Africa.
Think of Harambe as a town that’s welcoming you to Africa. (Harambe is Swahili for “let us all pull together.”) While the buildings in Harambe are architecturally simple and more idealized than the real thing, they’re certainly authentic. As you walk through the village, you’ll see nods to its “history” such as the walls of the ancient fort and canyons behind the Dawa Bar.
Inspired by the real island town Lamu off the east coast of Kenya, the Swahili-style structures tell the story of a village that has learned to benefit by conserving nearby natural resources and become a tourist destination. The buildings have been adapted to accommodate the tourist trade by including a bar, a restaurant, and other necessary facilities.
The village also serves as your entrance to the African veldt habitat which you can tour on Kilimanjaro Safaris. The queue for the attraction is next to a baobab tree that acts as a visual “wienie,” the carrot on the stick that draws you visually and physically forward, much like Cinderella Castle on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom. The roof over the entrance was woven by thirteen thatchers from Zululand in South Africa. It doesn’t get much more authentic than that.
Speaking of Kilimanjaro Safaris …
2. You can tour the veldt and get up close with the animals.
The main attraction in Africa is Kilimanjaro Safaris. For 20+ minutes, you ride in specially built jeep-like vehicles through 110 acres. This Harambe Wildlife Reserve is home to 34 different species of animals, including elephants, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, lions, and more. And if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot most of them.
But there’s more to Africa than the safari. Near to the safari entrance is the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, a self-guided walking tour. The gorillas are the stars, but for my money, the birds are every bit as fascinating.
Want to get up close and personal with animals? There are four different guided tours you can book in advance, for a price. You check in for all of them at the Curiosity Animal Tours kiosk across from the safari entrance.
- Caring for Giants is an hour-long experience that takes you as close as 80 to 100 feet away from the elephants who live here.
- Savor the Savanna is a private tour of areas you cannot see here any other way – plus food and refreshing adult beverages are included.
- Up Close with Rhinos also lasts 60 minutes, but here the featured animal is – you guessed it – these armored unicorns.
- Wild Africa Trek is a 3-hour walking tour through an open savanna that ends with some African-inspired snacks.
Lastly, between Harambe Market and the Kilimanjaro Safaris, you can board the Wildlife Express Train to ride to Rafiki’s Planet Watch, where the Conservation Station, petting zoo and some environmental exhibits await.
3. There’s plenty of entertainment, not just the flora and fauna.
One big draw in Africa is the live-action stage production of the Festival of the Lion King. Staged inside the Harambe Theatre, it’s located behind and to the left of the Tusker House restaurant. (And the production quality is excellent.)
That’s a major attraction, but the streets of the Harambe village are alive with performances as well. Among them are the Harambe Village Acrobats and the Tam Tam Drummers of Harambe.
And then there are the flotillas. Floating along on the Discovery River are favorite characters, including Goofy and Pluto, Scrooge McDuck, Pocahontas, and even Russell and Dug from Up. Viewing a flotilla depends on your timing and location along the river, but what a great surprise when one comes into view!
4. Eats, treats, and a nice boutique.
In Harambe Village, you’ll have your choice of snack stands, Quick Service stops, and a full-serve experience.
Grab a breakfast biscuit or croissant and specialty coffee at the Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery, right across from the Mombasa Marketplace. Looking for fresh fruit and juice? In addition to hot dogs, pretzels and corn on the cob, Harambe Fruit Market has a great selection. Tamu Tamu Refreshments has a great selection of options at breakfast, but the star here is the Dole Whip in various iterations that’s offered later in the day, including adult drinks made with rum or hard cider.
For more substantial fare, the Quick Service Harambe Market offers a terrific selection of African-inspired dishes for lunch and dinner. Disney Imagineers modeled Harambe’s marketplace setting after a typical real-life market in an African nation during the 1960s colonial eras, so the food and atmosphere are great. But if you take the time to look at some of the posters, as you eat, you’ll see the Disney touch at work.
Tusker House Restaurant is the Table Service location and the only character meal in Animal Kingdom. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, they offer a prix fixe buffet menu and you can meet Safari Mickey and others. There’s often last-minute availability, so check the Walk-Up Waitlist if you’re inspired to eat here as you tour.
Zuri’s Sweets Shop is filled with typical Disney treats, but there are some African finds, too. It’s connected to Mombasa Marketplace, where you’ll find Kilimanjaro Safaris souvenirs and apparel, but also items made by African artisans.
Finally, the Dawa Bar near Tusker House serves cocktails you can enjoy in a great sitting area. It’s a nice stop to relax while you’re waiting for a meal at Tusker House, or just on its own.
5. The secrets of Africa.
⭐ One of the largest hidden Mickeys at Disney World can be viewed while riding Kilimanjaro Safaris. The flamingo habitat is designed as a pond with a small island – an island in the shape of the huge Mickey.
⭐ While over at Harambe Market, you’ll find a not-so-hidden picture of Mickey on the wall. Underneath are the words, “Fichwa! Fellow”. “Fichwa” is Swahili for “hidden,” reminding you that there are Mickeys hidden throughout Animal Kingdom (and all of Disney World).
⭐ A few steps away is a gate decorated with metal cutouts of Simba and Nala from the Lion King. Above them are the words, “Unaweza kuhisi upendo usiku wa leo” which translates to, “Can you feel the love tonight?” in Swahili.
⭐ Tucked in back at Harambe Market is the “You Are Most Beautiful” wall, a popular spot for taking pix for your social posts.
⭐ Inside Tusker House, on your way to the restrooms, look up to see a sign on the wall reading, “Jorodi’s masks and beads.” Underneath is a sign “earrings.” This is a salute to imaginer Joe Rohde, a creative force behind the creation of Animal Kingdom, who wears a large dangling earring on his left ear.
The Bottom Line.
Harambe Village is much more than a hallway to get to Kilimanjaro Safaris and Festival of the Lion King. There’s so much more to enjoy that we recommend you leave a little time to take it in. The amazing architectural details, the street performers, the cuisine, and even the sitting areas are worthy of your attention. The village is alive with activity and the atmosphere created by Imagineers is immersive. While you may never travel across the ocean, Harambe Village and this land of Africa give you at least a tiny peek into the wonders the African continent holds.

12 Things To Do At Disney If You Hate Rides
- There are lots of things to do at Disney World besides rides! Experience the World Showcase at Epcot for a taste of different cultures without even setting foot on a ride.
- For those wondering what to do at Disneyland if you don't like rides, a Kilimanjaro Safari at Disney's Animal Kingdom is a fun choice; visitors get to see real animals up close!
- Instead of rides, explore the parks for hidden Mickeys and admire the beauty of Disney's grounds.
For those who love rides, Disney parks are like a dream come true, but for those who hate being spun, flipped, and jerked around, Disney can seem like a very daunting vacation experience. The good news is Disney is still an ideal destination, even if you don’t like rides. While some people prefer Disney World over Disneyland or vice versa, each park has its own set of things to do.
The rides at Disney tend to be much tamer and safer than your average fairground ride. Still, for those absolutely against all rides, there are plenty of other things to do in the parks! Ride-haters won’t be bored for a second, even if they don’t go on a single ride. It's the happiest place on Earth, after all; don't be afraid to try something different!

You'll Always Have Stuff To Do At Disney Theme Parks!
Disney parks will always be magical. However, for those wanting a bit of a roller-coaster-free experience, check out this expanded list of alternative things to do at Disney other than rides!
8 Disney Cruises, Ranked By Reviews
Check out the world showcase, a trip around the world in under a day, the world showcase at epcot is worth it.
If you can’t stand rides, you might want to spend some time at Epcot. They have a variety of attractions that don’t involve spinning, going upside down, or whizzing on roller coasters of any sort! One thing you might like to do is check out the World Showcase.
This is basically twelve different pavilions where you’ll get to experience twelve unique lands and their cultures, all without leaving the United States. The countries being showcased are Japan, France, Canada, Italy, China, Norway, Mexico, Germany, Morocco, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
- Countries included: 11
- Time to complete: ~3 to 4 hours
Embark On A Kilimanjaro Safari
Wild animals may keep you coaster-free the next time you're at animal kingdom.
There are certain Disney parks that tend to have more thrilling rides than others. One park that is heavy on non-thrilling attractions (although it has plenty of adrenaline-fanatic rides, too) is Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Here, you can embark on a Kilimanjaro Safari (who knew Disney is among the awesome places to go on a safari outside of Africa ?).
Unlike other Disney attractions, this one allows guests to see real animals, including rhinos, cheetahs, crocodiles, elephants, hyenas, and zebras. You’ll also see them up close, almost like being on safari in Kenya! And the best part is there’s no jerking, speeding, or flying involved.
For those staying at Animal Kingdom, here's everything to know about the lodge .
Try To Find Hidden Mickeys Around The Parks
They're hiding in plain sight; here's why 'hidden mickeys' are a thing.
One of the first things to try if you're not into roller coasters at a Disney park is to go exploring for hidden Mickey throughout the parks. Whether at Disneyland in California, Disney World in Orlando, one of the Asian or European parks, or beyond, hidden Mickeys are everywhere.
A "hidden Micky" is a presentation of the beloved Disney character, Mickey Mouse, that has been inserted purposefully yet very subtly into the design of a Disney attraction, ride, or another spot in a Disney theme park, and there are lots of them to find!
There's a long-standing rumor these tiny mouse shapings were created by Imagineers building each park as a way to have fun among each other. However, now, you can see them in obscure locations throughout the company's vast portfolio of properties.
Go On A Child-Friendly Ride
There are endless rides that aren't roller coasters to try at a disney park..
If the reason that you hate rides is that you don’t like any scream-inducing Disney rides that are too fast or scary , you could always go on a child-friendly one. There are plenty of kids' rides at Disney parks that aren't fast or terrifying! Skip the most intense rides at Disney parks like Space Mountain and go on something a little tamer.
There’s the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and the Jungle Cruise, and that’s all just in the Magic Kingdom alone. You could also join the Mad Tea Party—remember, it’s up to you how fast you spin your teacup. Who knows? You might have so much fun that the experience cures your distaste for all rides!
- Non-roller coaster rides at Disney: Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Na'vi River Journey, Soarin, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Tomorrowland Transit, Toy Story Mania, Dumbo, Radiator Springs Raceway
Admire The Grounds
Disney parks are known for their beauty: enjoy it.
You might hate the rides that exist within the Disney Parks, but no sane person can resist admiring the beauty of the grounds themselves. No matter what part of the resort you’re in, it really does feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale.
While the rest of your party is lining up for the rides, take your time strolling around and admiring the intricate details of the park grounds. Notice the amount of attention to detail that has gone into every little thing, from the writing on the signs to the design of the trash cans. Discover character-shaped topiaries, Disney character detailing across the park's lands, photo ops near attractions, flowers, sculptures, historical plaques, and much more.
Here's how Disney World in Orlando does things better than the rest .
See An Exciting Show
There's always song and dance somewhere at a disney theme park.
You don’t have to miss out on the magic of Disney just because you’re not a fan of rides. Why not see a show? Productions take place all the time at Disney resorts and parks. All you have to do is download the My Disney app to find out when and where the productions are happening.
During holiday seasons and special occasions, they might have themed shows that are a little different from the norm. This is one of the best things about being at Disney around Halloween or Christmas!
Use the My Disney App to find show times throughout Disney parks.
Watch A Disney Parade
With parades each morning, noon, and night at disney parks, there's always something to see between rides (or instead of them).
Don’t go to Disney without seeing at least one parade. If you don’t like rides, you can spend some of your time scouting out the best positions from which to watch the next parade. The best positions always go quickly!
There are seasonal parades that come with Halloween and Christmas, but there are also regular parades to see that star all your favorite Disney characters. Be sure to stick around for the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade as well as the Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It! Street Party.
- Notable Disney parades: Festival of Fantasy Parade, Christmas Show Parade, Main Street Electrical Parade , Mickey Mania Parade, Boo to You Halloween Parade, Festival of the Lion King
10 Cheapest Disney World Hotels For An Affordable Vacation
Meet your favorite disney character, princesses, mice, and everyone in between; meeting characters is always fun.
While many people go to Disney just to enjoy the rides, plenty of others go solely to encounter their favorite characters.
If you don’t like rides, you could simply spend your time meeting familiar faces like Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Prince Charming, Donald Duck, and countless others who do meet-and-greets as they stroll around the parks all day every day!
Certain characters tend to frequent specific areas of the parks, and some will make special appearances that will appear on the schedule. These tend to fill up pretty fast, so it’s a good thing you don’t have any rides to line up for!
Shop Up A Storm
With stores for blocks, disney parks sure know how to get people spending.
You could easily spend hours going through all the stores at the Disney parks. While everyone else is going on rides, you could take your time browsing through each store, carefully choosing the merchandise that you want to take home with you.
It’s true that a lot of the stores in the resort sell the same things, but each one is a little different. You never know what you might find! Most people rush through the shopping experience because they spend most of their time on rides and attractions, but you’ll be able to shop at your own pace.
Popular Disney shops at Disney parks not to miss include World of Disney, Emporium, The LEGO Store, and Disney Traders.
Eat At A Themed Restaurant
Mouse-shaped pancakes are only the beginning; eating at themed disney restaurants is a blast.
It's not just rides; one of the things Disney does best is grub! Foodies will love Disney parks; even if you don’t like rides, you can still find plenty of joy in going on your own little taste tour. There are endless snacks and treats to sample, from funnel cake to turkey legs to Mickey Mouse-shaped food, but the real joy comes from dining at one of the themed restaurants at Disney parks.
There’s the Be Our Guest Restaurant for something a little fancier, Cheshire Café, Cinderella’s Royal Table, Tortuga Tavern, Pinocchio Village Haus, Sleepy Hollow, and plenty of others. Our personal favorite is Tony’s Town Square Restaurant, which is a replica of the Italian eatery from Lady and the Tramp. Plus, in addition to themed eateries, places like Disney World even offer fine-dining restaurants for those seeking something a little fancier.

Disney Goes Green: 10 Ways To Have A Zero Waste, Eco-Friendly Vacation
Take a break from the action, charge your phone, and chill, with outlets scattered around the theme parks, disney can also provide guests with r&r.
Although Disney is truly magical, there also needs to be time to rest between attractions (rides or no rides!). That said, the parks offer countless charging stations and kiosks for guests to enjoy a rest break while charging their decides, usually near restaurants and bathrooms.
While that doesn't mean guests should spend their day on their phones glued to charging stations at Disney, they're bound to take a lot of photos and videos throughout their fun-filled day. As such, a quick charge every now and then will help keep that battery topped up for capturing magical memories during each day of the Disney vacation without having to go back to the hotel room to charge (or the car!).
According to Disney Parks , you can find chargers or outlets at places like Fantasyland, and more specifically in the courtyard near “It’s a Small World” and Peter Pan’s Flight, plus near Pete’s Silly Sideshow. Of course, you can also always ask an employee for help to locate one!
Head to Disney's website and look at an interactive map of charging stations in the area of the park you're visiting. Most are in Fantasyland!
Stick Around For The Fireworks
There's no better way to end a day at disney than to watch the fireworks.
Honestly, it’s worth going to Disney parks just to see the fireworks show before closing; it's one of the many reasons why Disney is so magical . Even if you don’t go on a single ride, this experience will make up for it. It’s not just any old fireworks show—like everything Disney does, it’s simply enchanting.
Not only does the sky light up with a spectacular burst of lights that has been carefully planned, but Cinderella’s Castle also lights up. Your favorite Disney songs also emanate through the park, and the atmosphere is buzzing as everyone congregates down Main Street to get a glimpse of it.
