In Praise of French Balcony Cabins on European River Cruise Ships

do tauck river cruise ships have balconies

Are you planning a river cruise for your next holiday? If so, then you should consider the difference between cabins with French Balconies and Verandah cabins.

Both offer stunning views of passing scenery that can’t be experienced from land-based accommodations. But there are distinct differences between them that could influence your decision on which one to choose.

French Balcony cabins have floor-to-ceiling glass doors, while Verandah cabins have larger outdoor spaces with chairs and tables where guests can relax in the fresh air and enjoy their own private view of the river. Both types of cabin provide plenty of comfort inside, but each offers a different experience when it comes to taking in the sights along the way.

First-time river cruisers might feel that perhaps they need to pay the extra for a sit-out balcony, an open air space to sit in by opening the glass door from their cabin, sometimes called a veranda.  But the bigger space usually comes with a bigger price tag.

As someone who has sold river cruises for many years and has many happy repeat clients working with lots of different holiday budgets, I’m going to stick my neck out and say I don’t think it matters that much.  Choosing a French balcony over a veranda on a European river cruise ship, is certainly not second best.

French balcony vs veranda

In the eternal debate of French balcony vs veranda, there is no clear winner. It depends on your personal preferences. If you want to enjoy the views without being disturbed by wind or rain, a French balcony is the way to go. These balconies are enclosed, so you can sit back and relax in comfort. But if you really want to immerse yourself in the surroundings, a veranda is the best choice. These open-air balconies let you enjoy fresh air and panoramic views, even if it means getting a little wet from time to time. River cruise companies will charge more for a cabin with a sit-out veranda. So which is better for you? That’s up for you to decide.

Sitting on your own veranda on an ocean ship can seem like an oasis of calm, somewhere to escape to during the downtimes of days at sea.

Downtimes on river cruises during the day are few.  You wake up in the morning and then go to breakfast.  If the weather is good, then you could take a coffee on your veranda.  Or you could open your French windows and look out with the coffee in hand instead.

But now it’s time to leave the ship, small bag in hand for the day’s exploring.  You won’t see your veranda again for the rest of the day.  Or, the weather is so nice, you are heading up to the top deck, book in hand to take advantage of one of the sun loungers or the marble pool or to meet some fellow guests for a chat over a coffee under a parasol.  Or after a day’s exploring, then you might still want to go to the top deck, Aperol in hand? Do you see where I am going with this?

By far the best place to watch the view of the river bank is on the top deck which gives you a 360 degree panoramic view which you can never get from your stateroom, even if you have the biggest one on the ship.

Scenic Jasper Amber Opal Pool

What is a french balcony?

Let me try and explain why I believe some of the best French balcony stateroom options, offer just as much as a veranda on the central European rivers. Where does the term French balcony come from?  Is it pretending to offer something that it is not. Wikipedia simply offers the phrase a “false balcony” which is true if a little harsh.

Why do river ship staterooms have French balconies?

Simple fact, river ships can only be a certain size in width and height, being limited by the height of the bridges and length and width of the locks.  So the river cruise operators are restricted, they can’t go out and they can’t go tall. Which means cabins with verandas have to use the available space for a seating area outside from space within the cabin. Unless you have best suite in which case you will usually be at the front or back so able to have a walk out veranda

Viking River Cruises have small French Balconies on their Longships Viking River Cruises have decided to sell the French balcony short and all hail the veranda.  Give them their due, they’ve been selling river cruises for a while now and know they can get their customers to pay for the veranda.

The Viking Longships have small French balcony cabins on the rivers in their modern fleet. At 135 sq ft, your cabin, it could be argued, has been compromised by a veranda. And it’s not yours, but the guy over the corridor who has taken the other 40 sq ft from your cabin! But then he’s paid for it. 🙂

Uniworld – French Balconies go for elegance

Uniworld SS Maria Theresa Suite

The exterior of a river cruise ship simply looks more elegant with French balconies. Verandas can give the appearance of a Canary Island waterfront covered in flats (apartments). Uniworld however, I have to take my hat off to, they have realised it and have enclosed their verandas in electronically removable glass, keeping the lines of the ship sleek and clean. The SS Antoinette , SS Catherine and  the SS Maria Theresa , all have this design. Shape and form do matter and the boutique river cruise line have taken this into consideration. However, an insiders tip, the French balcony stateroom, with its electronic window which glides away so beautifully, is the same size – 196 sq ft – as the veranda cabin on the upper deck. So the veranda itself which is wide enough for a sideways chair has taken the space off your cabin. For more interior space, the category 2 is a good choice.

No verandas on Tauck, Avalon or Riviera

Tauck, MS Inspire, MS Savor, Cat 7 suite

Tauck River Cruises MS Savor Cat 7 Stateroom The lovely people at family owned Tauck have created their inspiration class ships, the MS Savor and MS Inspire with no verandas at all. Tauck have said completely and utterly no to their brand new ships having verandas. A brave move for one of the world’s best travel companies you might say. Designed in partnership with Scylla , their long term ship operating partner, these beautiful ships contain more suites than other ships at the luxury end of the market, so huge cabins with ample room for a veranda you might think. But no. My beautiful category 5, 225 sq ft, stateroom on the MS Savor, with its wonderfully comfy bed, Nespresso machine, separate seating area and a gorgeous Molton Brown smell had no veranda and was much bigger for it.  Let me just mention that we are Tauck certified agents as I passed my exam, (but that’s a whole other blog piece).

Avalon Artistry II - Panorama Suite Balcony

Another operator who is launching more and more suite ships is Avalon. Most staterooms are now over 200 sq ft, with an extra wide, 11ft French balcony. The flat glass which covers the entire wall is fantastic for making you feel like you are part of your surroundings. It feels like you are outside even in the cooler months when you are less likely to have the window open.

One of the best inventions of the last few years has been the completely disappearing French balcony glass . So, although the Riviera ships, the William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens , which do various itineraries on the Rhine and Danube, do have four deluxe suites with outside space – and you have to be booking a year in advance to get one any time during May-September – everyone else on the middle and upper deck gets a glass wall that opens to the world and saves themselves a few quid in the bargain.

Still can’t decide between a French Balcony or Veranda?

AmaWaterways AmaSonata Suite

Which brings us to AmaWaterways . Berlitz rated them again in 2022 as having the best fleet on the European rivers and their new Concerto class ships really are stunning. These ships have middle deck French balcony cabins at 170 sq ft, with disappearing, sliding glass doors opening the whole cabin up to the river. All categories above this feature the AmaWaterways Twin Balcony concept with both a French balcony and a veranda.

If you really can’t make your mind up about French Balconies or verandahs, then this would be the perfect compromise! 🙂

About Alex Leete

Who is Alex Leete? A passion for travel and over 15 years' experience in the industry encouraged me to set up Global River Cruising, our own family run company. Over the last few years we have been on as many river cruises, ships and seen as many destinations as we possibly can so we can rightfully call ourselves "experts". As independent specialists we work hard to find the perfect river cruise for our clients - at the very best prices too!

Ask a Question

I’ve just booked an AMA Mekong River cruise for my 75th birthday in March 2021. I’ve had to go for the lowest grade cabin (C) on the AMERADA, cabin 102 on the Tonie deck. I would have had to pay an additional £1000 for a grade B on the Saigon deck but my budget wouldn’t stretch to it. The cabin has a French balcony . Really looking forward to it.

That sounds like a really wonderful way to enjoy your birthday. AmaWaterways are a fabulous river cruise operator and will certainly look after you very well. I am a little confused about your statement about your AmaDara stateroom though. The Cat C, B & A staterooms are all the same in terms of layout and amenities, it is just their location on the vessel that differs. So your stateroom, No. 102 on the Tonle deck, has a twin, French and full sit-out balcony – you can see some images on our AmaDara ship Page

Thanks for this. Considering a trip on AMA on the Doura…husband has a little claustrophobia and generally on the mega cruise ships we get a balcony for his sake. I am thinking the French balcony is cheaper and should work for him.

Thank you for your comment.

I would say from a feeling of light and space the difference between an outside balcony is probably pretty minimal, potentially the accommodation may feel more spacious with a French balcony. Although it does also depend on the overall size of the cabin.

On the Douro AmaWaterways do not actually have cabins with French balconies, the Douro vessels have a slightly different design to the other European ships to reflect the local river conditions. All cabins above the lower deck on the AmaVida and AmaDouro do have full sit out balconies – so in this case the decision is effectively made for you.

You can see details of the vessels and itineraries available from AmaWaterways from the following link: AmaWaterways Douro River Cruises You can see a wider selection of Douro cruises, including other operators from the following link: All Douro River Cruises

AmaWaterways are certainly a wonderful choice, we’d be happy to talk through some of the options with you and assist you with your booking. You can call me free on 0800 471 4754, or if you prefer I’m happy to call you at a convenient time.

Alex – interesting reading,,,,,,

RIVER BOAT RATINGS AND EVALUATIONS: TAUCK RIVER CRUISES

Tauck_logo

#1 – TAUCK RIVER BOATS

Current Report Card Score:  89%

RIVERBOATRATINGS BOTTOM LINE: Tauck Tours is a Connecticut-based, family-owned business that entered the river cruise business in 2006. Though more expensive on a per diem basis than its rivals, Tauck offers the best overall river boat experience in Europe currently available. Tauck’s river boat programs cost more upfront but the company has zero “add-ons”. Inclusive amenities now include all gratuities, all shore excursions, unlimited wine and beer with meals onboard, and airport transfers.

We believe the most significant competitive advantage enjoyed by Tauck guests is the presence of an onboard Tauck Cruise Director and three highly-visible Tour Directors, who work for Tauck. They provide a link to the quality one finds on Tauck’s absolutely First Class worldwide land tours. With more than 85 years experience as a tour operator, Tauck’s onboard staff presence can quickly resolve problems should they arise. In terms of overall quality and product consistency, no other river boat operator in Europe can match Tauck’s overall quality.

Although it is not in any brochure or discussed online, Tauck’s customer service policies far exceed those of any of their competitors. This is clearly a company that has “made things right” whenever there have been issues in the past involving water levels or service issues. Any river boat line looks good when everything is going well. Tauck manages to look good even when travel glitches occur. That has a lot to do with the fact that this is the only top-grade worldwide tour operator managing boats on Europe’s major rivers. If Tauck loses a river boat client, they lose a potential lifelong client who would have traveled with them to the corners of the earth. No other river boat company has that much at risk in delivering a superior product.

Tauck has 85 years of experience offering escorted tours, but comes late to the river cruise industry, launching their first ship in 2006.  The company offers an upscale all-inclusive experience with excursions, staff gratuities, onboard meals, wine and beer with dinner, entertainment and port charges all included in the fare.  On most Tauck Programs, pre and post land programs are fairly priced and Tauck allows guests to book extra hotel nights at negotiated rates that include transfers even if the air is not booked through the line.

A popular feature is the shore dining option offering guests the chance to enjoy regional cuisine at local restaurants.  A Tauck Cruise Director supported by three additional professionally-trained Tauck Assistant Directors facilitates culturally-rich, mostly private, shore excursions and experiences.  Passengers are normally quite pleased with the personalized attention and service they receive.  Guest cabins satisfy with French balconies (sliding doors with rail guards) and floor-to-ceiling windows.  The onboard experience is relaxed, spacious, refined and elegant.

OWNERSHIP AND HISTORY

river boat Tauck A

OFFICERS AND CREW

The crew onboard is mostly European.  On average, there are 36 crew members onboard each of the Jewel Class ships and 39 crew members on Inspiration Class vessels. The crew is supplied by a Swiss company called Scylla Tours. Scylla owns all of the vessels which are on long-term lease to Tauck.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Ship accommodations are categorized in six categories on three deck levels.  The Diamond Deck houses the Suites and four Junior Suites.  One deck below, the Ruby Deck, has two Junior Suites forward and the rest are Standard Cabins.  The most basic cabins are found on the third deck, the Emerald Deck, which sandwiched between the fitness center and crew space.  Cabins are equipped with twin beds or one queen and are elevated to provide luggage storage underneath.  Be sure to bring your adapters and converters as ships are equipped with 220 volt, two pin plugs to charge electronic and the like.  Bedding is luxurious and the minibar is stocked with your favorite sodas and bottled water, complimentary.  Robes and slippers are provided for your comfort and every cabin is equipped with a silent alarm so at the push of a button help is on the way, should you suddenly become ill and need assistance.

Best Accommodations:  The 14 suites found on the top deck measure a spacious 300 square feet and feature walk-in closets, marble baths and full size tubs, showers, double-bed sofa, writing desk and double floor-to-ceiling windows. Room service is offered to suites.  Junior Suites are a comfortable alternative, with 183 square feet and a small sitting area.

Standard Accommodations:  These well-appointed and positioned cabins offer a minimum of 150 square feet and included flat screen TVs, mini bar, safes, and cabin-controlled air conditioning.

Entry-Level Accommodations:  The narrow and twisting stairway to access entry-level cabins on the lowest deck is shared by crew and those fellow passengers wanting to access the fitness center and massage room.

We are not big fans of the new Loft Cabins that have a step up small balcony area. They can be both noisy and, for some, claustrophobic.

Breakfast onboard is buffet style full of fruit, meats, cheeses, juices, breads and pastries and hot and cold cereals.  You may also order eggs, omelets, pancakes from the Chef’s station.

Another buffet offers lunch consisting of salads, hot and cold dishes, a menu is also provided with various selections.  Beer, soft drinks and juices are served.

Onboard the Swiss named ships the open seating for dinner with tables for 4, 6 and 8.  After the first cocktail reception you will have many dining invitations so don’t fret that you won’t have table mates.  If you wish to dine at a table for 2, the Maître D will try to ensure no one else will be seated at your table.  European-style dinner is a set menu with appetizer, soup and salad as well as four or five good entrée selections including a vegetarian option.  Regional wines are served, as are soft drink, beer and juices.  Many tempting dessert choices will be offered.

An alternative to the dining room is a small intimate setting found on the top deck called the Lido bar.   Here coffee and pastries are served to the early risers and light lunch offerings served bistro style.  Cookies and fruit are available around the clock and some passengers play cards here to pass the time.  There is a well equipped self-service coffee machine for coffee, cappuccinos, espressos, various flavored coffees and hot water for tea.  A limited dinner can be served in this area with advance reservations for a party of up to 20.

A word and about DRESS and LAUNDRY:

Dinner is not a formal affair and it is not required to dress.  Men do not need to wear a suit and tie and it is unlikely that many men will wear a jacket.  Dress pants and collared shirt are the norm.  There is no self-service laundry, only valet style incurring significant onboard charges.  Laundry is collected in the early morning and returned before the end of the day.

SHORE EXCURSIONS

Durnstein_Hiking_Castle_a

EVENING ACTIVITIES

Most evening activities include a subdued musician or a movie.   Themed games, cooking demonstrations or wine tastings are also offered and special events are commemorated with a performance by local musicians and lecturers.

Wireless internet is available onboard but reception is spotty and limited.  There are three computers in the aft on the top deck of the Lido bar.  There are also two laptops that are available for cabin use loaned out in two hour intervals on a complimentary basis.  There is a small library and DVD’s can be borrowed for use in the DVD players found in the suites.  Television onboard will consist of many foreign language channels as well as CNN.

SPA AND FITNESS OPTIONS

Found on the lower deck is the fitness center equipped with a few machines and free weights.  Music is provided but there is no television.  Depending on the sailing there may be a masseuse and massage table onboard.  These services are at an additional cost.  A 24 hour hot tub is found on the top deck for your relaxation.

AIR/SEA AND PROMOTIONAL PRICING

Tauck does on occasion offer special promotions on business class airfare, although they are infrequent.    Single Supplement Pricing is usually no more than 75%.  On most sailings when booking the lowest cabin category, the supplement is waived.  On select sailings, there are times when $1,000 is deducted from the single cruise fare.

The smaller number of passengers allows Tauck staff to attend to all guests’ individual needs, allowing you and the other passengers to focus only on enjoying your cruising experience.

All Tauck staff promise to go above and beyond to make you feel welcome and well-cared-for during your voyage.

If informed in advance, even the kitchen staff will be glad to find a way to accommodate any dietary issues you may have.

Due to Tauck’s high standards for customer service, there is often a learning curve for new employees, so some cruises might be in the process of training new employees – if you’ll allow them a little patience, they will soon join the expert service you expect from a Tauck cruise.

If there are any complaints about your suite at any point during your cruise, try talking with the tour director – if it is possible he/she will be more than happy to relocate you so you can enjoy all the benefits available aboard the ship.

Staterooms and Suites

Tauck river cruises

Maximizing comfort for all guests, Tauck offers multiple cabin choices. Each ship offers 6 different cabin categories and a 7 th suite category; the main difference between cabin categories is deck location.

The locations/decks for each Cabin category change for each ship.

Cabin layouts may also vary by ship, though the amenities and size will remain relatively the same.

Some cabins may feature a semi-level loft layout, featuring a slightly raised seating area on select ships.

Though listed as a queen-size bed, the beds in any room category may be made into an optional twin-bed configuration if desired.

The standard cabin layout and features are described in each Cabin Synopsis.

Category 1 and Category 2 Cabins

Tauck river cruises

The Category 1 and Category 2 Cabins are designed to accommodate up to 2 guests each.

These elegantly designed cabins feature a queen-size bed measuring 62 inches by 77 inches.

Each cabin has only 1 bathroom that comes equipped with a bathtub, separate shower, and Molton Brown toiletries.

Note that bathroom configurations may change per ship, therefore not all Cabins will have a bathtub in the bathroom.

There is a small sitting area for these cabins. Guests will also have access to a telephone, an in-room safe, and individual climate control.

These cabins will also include a refrigerator stocked with complimentary water and soft drinks (replenished daily).

Guests staying in this cabin will enjoy the two 2’x3’ windows that bring in a little extra light. The size of a category 2 cabin is slightly larger than the category 1 cabin.

Category 3, Category 4, Category 5, and Category 6 Cabins

Tauck river cruises

The Category 3 through Category 6 Cabins are designed to accommodate only 2 guests each.

These cabins come equipped with a queen-size bed measuring 62 inches by 77 inches.

Each cabin has only 1 bathroom that comes equipped with a shower and a bathtub. Note that ship differences may result in some bathrooms coming equipped with a bathtub while others only include a large shower.

These cabins have a small sitting area, but no sofa. Guests staying in theses cabins have access to a telephone, an in-room safe to store small valuables, and individual climate control.

Each cabin includes a refrigerator that is stocked with complimentary water and soft drinks (replenished daily).

Guests staying in these cabins will enjoy the views from the floor-to-ceiling French Balcony (98 inches by 75 inches) with a single sliding glass door.

Category 3 and category 4 cabins are the same size (also the same size as category 1 cabins); category 5 and category 6 cabins are the same size as category 2 cabins.

Selected as one of the "10 Best River Cruises" by Fodor's Travel... there is no better way to experience the heart of Europe with your family than on a leisurely Tauck Bridges Danube river tour and cruise aboard one of Tauck's custom-designed riverboats.

Tauck exclusive – imperial evening at palais pallavicini, our gala imperial evening at a private palace in vienna.

Fairy tales come true when you and your family dress up for a royal evening at a private palace in Vienna – the Baroque, 18th-century Palais Pallavicini – just for Tauck Bridges families that transports you to another time. Dinner is served in a ballroom gilded in gold and bathed in the glimmering light of crystal chandeliers. Dancers in traditional dress waltz into the ballroom while musicians play their instruments with regal precision and harmony. And those childhood dreams of meeting a prince or being a princess? This is where they become real.

Jam-packed family fun on every day

Our danube family river cruise has something for everyone.

Discovering new destinations like the locals do is the best way to learn about different cultures and traditions. From guided bicycle rides to "Sound of Music" karaoke to catacombs tours and a step back into the Middle Ages with a "knight tournament," our Danube family river cruise is designed to have a little something for everyone, and plenty to do as a whole family.

Making marzipan in Passau

A family marzipan making experience in riverside passau.

Marzipan is a sweet candy confection – traditionally made from sugar or honey and ground almonds, and often formed into pastries or shapes – that can be found around the world. Asia, the Americas, the Middle East and most regions of Europe all have marzipan-making traditions. And you'll discover Germany's love affair with this sweet concoction with a demonstration in Passau that lets you try your hand at making your own tasty tidbit in the shape of a face... very popular in this "city of three rivers."

The River of Kings – The Danube

We saw memorable and historical sites on a our danube trip but tauck managed to make it so much fun for our three generations traveling together..

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter any of these countries for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy of each of the countries visited – Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary – to determine what travel documentation is required.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the riverboat, your passport will be held by the purser temporarily to make copies.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation. We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN:  If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Your riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

Please advise your Tauck Director on tour if you or the children traveling with you have any serious allergies. Also, adults may want to bring along children's aspirin or medicines as a precaution, as access to these may be limited.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no other vaccinations are currently required for travel to Germany, Austria, Slovakia or Hungary. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary to determine whether additional vaccinations are required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

While a cruise on the Danube is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our excursions, often along cobblestone streets, and at many sites there are multiple stairs or steps; for the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, and Sun. The elevator connects the Diamond, Ruby, and Emerald decks. There is no elevator to the Sundeck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor on board. In case of emergency we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate along the Danube River is temperate and unpredictable. From June through August, the average high temperatures decrease as you travel west along the river and range from 69 to 79°F (21 to 26°C) and the average low temperatures range from 51 to 59°F (11 to 15°C). Rainfall amounts in this region remain fairly constant throughout the year, although late spring and early summer are generally the wettest seasons of the year. Opposite of temperature, rainfall increases as you travel west.

Newly redesigned for a more intimate cruising experience, ms Treasures  offers a seamless combination of luxury and comfort as you glide along the Danube and Rhine Rivers... enjoy views of fairy-tale castles that line the riverbanks from the Sun Deck... gaze at picture-book villages while you dine at Compass Rose, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of fellow passengers in the lounge before heading out, ready for the adventures that lie ahead...

One of the 361-foot (110-meter) riverboats in Tauck's Destination Fleet, this newly redesigned riverboat debuts in 2017 with a new deck plan optimized for the utmost in spaciousness – with 70% of her cabins measuring 225 square feet or larger – and accommodating no more than 98 guests, while similar-sized riverboats average about 160. Guest amenities inside her 14 lush 300-square-foot Tauck Suites include brocade upholstery, roomy walk-in closets with built-in drawers, spacious bathrooms with separate showers, and two French balconies with floor-to-ceiling windows that open to idyllic riverscapes. She also sports twenty roomy 225-square-foot cabins, four 183-square-foot cabins and one 182 square-foot cabin, similarly furnished. Eight 150-square-foot cabins are cozy and comfortable, and are similar in décor and style to our larger suites. 85% have floor-to-ceiling windows with real French balconies that open on to a balcony in the fresh air; all have in-room movies, minibar, adjustable heating and cooling, private bathroom and shower with pampering toiletries. In addition to our main dining room, The Compass Rose, the ship also features Arthur's, a second dining venue offering casual fare.

Onboard Experience

Your day starts with breakfast onboard… sharing your favorite table by the window with the couple you became friends with at your welcome dinner… enjoying your favorite buffet selections just the way you like them… The riverboat docks right around the time you're finished with breakfast; you couldn't have asked for better timing… As you step off the ship, our local experts eagerly await to show you around the ancient village they call home, a place whose wine-making traditions stretch back over a thousand years; soon it may feel like home to you as well. You'll spend the morning exploring with your local guide before returning to the riverboat to continue your cruise. Back aboard, you'll have some time to explore your "floating hotel." Or decide to relax and chat with friends as you bask in the sun, sipping a cool drink. Refreshed, you head into the lobby just in time to watch the riverboat dock. This afternoon, taste your way through a picturesque riverside town, sampling the wares of artisan chocolatiers and a baker who shares a few secrets. Dinner tonight may be in yet another country, something you have never experienced before – an elegant affair in a baroque castle… Walking to the venue, your Tauck Director and local guide fill you in on the history that surrounds you. Your jaw drops as you enter the magnificent castle; the couple you had breakfast with joins you, bringing along some new friends. You don't want the evening to end, but alas, it must… another Tauck experience to check off on the "wow" list… Returning to the riverboat, you meet your companions for a little more camaraderie around the piano in the lounge before calling it a night. Drifting off to sleep, you smile… realizing that you'll soon be waking up in another magical town… to embark on another perfect day of your Tauck river cruise… Read Less
