Cathay Pacific Rules On Ticket Name Changes & Corrections

Like many other airlines, Cathay Pacific also has a clear-cut viewpoint about name corrections on a ticket. There’re times when passengers enter their names incorrectly in the reservation form. Though it is a tiny mistake, it may get you in great trouble eventually.

Ticket name changes and corrections on Cathay Pacific is somewhat easy to change – so long as you meet the set-out criteria.

To be clear, this is not a provision that enables you to change the flight name to that of your neighbour. It is a  correction  policy, such that if your name is slightly incorrect, it can be corrected. As opposed to a wholesale “name change”.

In many cases, it can be done quite easily with a phone call to customer service and providing the required proof . For the most part, if a ticket needs to be altered due to a typo or because your legal name has changed (after getting married, for example), then you should be able to get it done.

However, a word of caution as not all airlines are the same when it comes to a name change. Take for example the  Student who changed his name by deed poll to avoid the extortionate admin fees on Ryanair.

Type of Amendments

Importantly, a ticket “name change’ and ‘correction’ has 2 different meanings and are not interchangeable .

A name correction allows the airline to correct the name to match a government-issued document(s) for miss-spelling, married/maiden/divorce names, legal names, secondary last name, inverted names, etc., and if the gender or age does not match between a legal document and the ticket issued.

A name change is a complete or partial change of name (such as to a new person or a relative with the same surname).

Cathay Pacific is clear that tickets may be reissued due to Name correction if names are misspelt only. Reissuance is not allowed if it will be reissued to a different person.

Cathay Pacific Ticket Name Changes

First and foremost, Name Changes from one person to another are not allowed as you would be effectively touting a ticket at a lower price than what it would potentially go for at a later date.

Cathay is clear that it does not allow the transfer of a ticket to someone else, by changing the name on your ticket to another person.

Cathay allows for name changes and allows for changes to be done quite simply over the phone.

You can correct the name on your ticket (subject to fees) if your name is misspelt on the ticket.

• Surname and First name swapped
• Title / Gender correction
• Same person with name wrongly input due to typo more than 3 letters.
• Surname changed after marriage (document proof required).

Don't panic: Here's what to do if you misspell your name on an airline ticket

A common question we get is about what to do if you misspell your name on an airline ticket. Getting your name right seems like one of the easiest aspects of booking a flight, but it happens to the best of us.

Generally speaking, most airlines allow you to make ticket name corrections. So, if you made a typo when entering your name, there's no need to worry. However, if you want to give your ticket to a completely different person, that's an entirely different story.

Today, we're going to focus on the former. Here's what to do if you accidentally misspelled your name on a ticket and still intend to be the one traveling.

Airline ticket name corrections

For the most part, you shouldn't have trouble making minor name corrections. However, you'll want to act as soon as you notice the error. If you notice the mistake within 24 hours of booking and the ticket price hasn't changed, the easiest option would be to cancel your ticket for a refund and rebook. Otherwise, you'll need to get in touch with the airline or whoever you booked through.

In most cases, you'll need to reach out over the phone, though some airlines may be able to help through social media or live chat via their mobile apps. A select few airlines, such as Southwest, even allow you to fix misspelled names directly on their site.

Most major U.S. airlines allow you to make minor changes like correcting typos, changing a name from the nickname and correcting inverted first and last names for free. This even includes some ultra-low-cost carriers like Spirit. Although middle names generally don't matter much (at least when traveling domestically), airlines will also let you delete or add an initial or middle name. You just can't make changes to the date of birth and gender in conjunction with a name correction. The point is that you must still be the one traveling.

Although most airline tickets now come with " free changes ," this generally doesn't include name changes. The value of the ticket must be used by the originally ticketed passenger, so you can't simply give your ticket away to a family member or friend.

If you're still the one traveling but need to make a more substantial name change — because you got recently married, for instance — then you should still be fine, though you may need to provide some documentation at the airport. Finally, even if you're making a minor correction, you should still be aware of some other restrictions. For instance, airlines generally only allow you to make one name correction — anything more and it will be considered a name change . Although typically still possible, name corrections are a bit more complicated when there are multiple carriers involved. Also, some itineraries might not allow name changes altogether — for instance, Delta can't make name changes or name corrections for travel between the U.S. and China.

How to avoid typos on bookings

As you can see, there's no panic if you misspell your name on an airline ticket. That said, there's an easy way to avoid typos altogether.

Make sure all of your frequent flyer accounts are up to date with the correct spelling of your name. Then whenever you make a new booking while signed in to your account, all of your personal information, including your name, will automatically populate. Many frequent flyer programs also let you store the information of companions you frequently travel with.

Bottom line

Airlines are generally understanding when it comes to correcting misspelling or legal name changes on tickets. However, you'll want to fix the issue sooner rather than later. Although some people have successfully flown on tickets with a slightly different first name — i.e., Benji versus Benjamin — it's not guaranteed to work and could cause issues with getting your TSA PreCheck status and claiming miles for the flight.

It's also important to remember that name corrections are very different from name changes. Whether or not a ticket is changeable, it's always non-transferable, so you can't simply give your ticket to someone else.

That’s also why airlines started insisting on ID’ing travelers, to make sure their tickets weren’t being resold. The government didn’t impose an airline ID requirement until 1996 as a way of looking like they were ‘doing something’ after the TWA flight 800 accident that some at the time thought might have been terrorism-related.

There are exceptions to this. JetBlue used to allow name changes on tickets for $25. Scandinavian used to allow name changes if you’d sign a form saying the trip was leisure and not business. But airlines have cracked down on their exceptions.

However there are times you need to fix the name on a ticket, and times you need to change the name on a ticket altogether.

Does The Name On My Ticket Need to Match My ID?

Minor misspellings on tickets are common and not usually something to worry about. It’s more important that “Secure Flight information’ which is entered separately matches your travel documents in order to be allowed to fly. However Secure Flight Information can be updated by your airline, even at the check-in gate.

I’ve never seen someone denied boarding because their middle name wasn’t on a ticket or there was a misspelling of a middle name. There is no requirement for an airline ticket to include your middle name, however if your ID includes a middle name that should be included in secure flight information.

It’s possible that a security screener will scrutinize your ticket, notice a difference with your ID (such as a misspelling of your first or last name) and give you a hard time. That’s unlikely, but the government’s document checkers have substantial unchecked authority.

So it makes sense to try to get the airline to fix your name on a ticket. This is something that’s pretty easy to do when the airline you bought the ticket from is the same airline that you’re flying – there are no partner airlines involved.

However if you run into pushback then my general advice is to get to the airport early. If the airport has more than one security line, and you get turned away at the first one, just go through security somewhere else before arguing. You might also get your airline to make a note in your reservation about the mistake, and then the airline might be helpful on the day of travel if you have to escalate things with a TSA supervisor.

I Got Married But Already Booked My Honeymoon Tickets

A name change is actually pretty easy to do when the passenger isn’t changing, the ticket is just being updated to match travel documents. That’s true for small corrections (like a misspelling) and it’s also true when you legally change your name. The airline is going to require documentation, and may charge you a modest fee, but changes are possible.

Where things run into difficulty is when you buy a ticket from one airline, but it involves travel on another airline. That’s common when booking international award travel – you might use United miles to travel on Lufthansa and Thai Airways, or American miles to fly Cathay Pacific. The U.S. carrier can’t just change the name on the ticket on their own, and will often say it’s not possible (though I’ve had it done). It gets complicated because it takes time and manual intervention – an airline’s partner liaison getting in touch with their counterpart at the other airline. Often making that process happen can be a pain, and the results aren’t guaranteed.

If you’re getting married and you’ve already booked honeymoon travel (where this comes up most) the simplest thing, if you’re going to change your name, is to wait until travel is completed to make the change . There’s no requirement to change a name at all, let alone right away.

Changing a name takes time, even just in the case of marriage, since the marriage certificate is needed to update a drivers license and passport. Once you change the name on a passport don’t forget to update your Global Entry, too. This doesn’t require an appointment, but it does require showing up at a Global Entry enrollment center in person.

American Airlines has a policy – that’s similar at many carriers – to allow name corrections. There are two kinds of corrections – minor and major – and the processes are different for each.

American Airlines offers flexibility for Minor and Major name corrections for wholly unused (001) validated tickets.

Minor name corrections apply to itineraries that consist of American prime and American Eagle flights only and may be corrected in the same PNR. Itineraries ticketed in “R” inventory must follow Major Name Correction Guidelines

Major name corrections apply to itineraries ticketed in “R” inventory, codeshare flight segments on our AA*/oneworld® codeshares or non-oneworld carriers, and require a new PNR as a name correction cannot be made within the same PNR due to GDS limitations.

My wife’s last name is of the form XXXXX-XXXXXXXXX.

WN’s computers are programmed by idiots who do not allow hyphens in a profile. So WN has my wife as XXXXXX XXXXXXXXX.

We once almost missed a flight from RIC arguing with a TSA goon about this for 20 minutes.

A TSA agent in Kansas City once told me that they estimate 35% of all tickets compared with passports have a name discrepancy issue, problem, whatever. The blame, problem, issue goes right back to the flyer with damn little help from the airline or governmental agency. I’m old. I have NEVER used my legal first name. Until 2000 or so all my identification (voter ID, driver’s license, insurance cards) was only in my middle name. Then I has hit by a miserable wave of “requirements” and “corrections.” Idiot after idiot will leave off my middle name despite my determined efforts to get it included; one bored “kid” after another will mangle my name his way. This is NOT just a honeymoon problem. Geez. It is a lot of tedious ineptitude with no one in charge. If they want the damned name a certain way, why can they not be required to make consistent the three name usage of the passport?

After reading about a passenger on WOW that was denied boarding over not having middle name, which was on her passport, on her ticket I got a little paranoid about an upcoming trip in Singapore Air. I’ve flown internationally a lot with AA and DL having just first/last name (or maybe middle initial) but not EXACTLY matching my passport. Didn’t think it would be a problem but wanted to check. Sent a request to Singapore Air and got a call back (from Singapore so assume my cell bill with reflect that ). They confirmed that they don’t ask for middle name and and along as first and last match my passport I’m good. Hate to be this anal but don’t need something this minor to ruin a trip. Obviously married name changes, hyphenated names or use of middle name (instead of first) are much more likely to cause issues but wanted to confirm I wouldn’t have a problem. Glad to hear that was the case. Never hurts to make sure IMHO

Birth certificate has 1st name Laurence. Have always used Lawrence. Passport has to match birth certificate LAU. Credit cards are all LAW and those are difficult to change. So airline accounts are LAU, but I pay with LAW without any problems

Whenever you read something like this, you so easily see the disaster of governments getting intimately involved in private industry.

I can tell you right now this article is full of assumptions and misinformation. Let me clarify:

1. It DOES state on any airline website, in very clear writing that you name match you passport or travel document EXACTLY. This is even more important when traveling internationally. For Domestic bookings they most of the time could care less, but when it goes international there are many more laws, authorities and countries that legally require this for security reasons.

2. It is ABSOLUTELY important your name matches your travel document. AKA, if you have first middle last name, you HAVE to put that on your ticket. Letters must match to the T. This is not a case of “overpowered TSA agent” but an actual valid and IMPORTANT security measure. There are hundreds of people name Karen Smith, one of those hundred is wanted my olice for a murder. You put Karen Mary Smith, you differentiate yourself from others. If you show up and you’ve put just your middle name, your left it out or your name doesnt match EXACTLY, that TSA agent or the boarding agents AND the airline are held legally responsibly if you leave the country and could have heavy fines. So consider it next time your arguing with a TSA agent about letting you go because you were too lazy to just get your passport and verify your name matches. They are putting their job on the line everytime they let someone through when thier IDs don’t match.

3. Airlines DO have a policy for name CORRECTIONS (less that 3 letters) but most of the time, these policy are completely NULL if you have more than 1 carrier on your ticket. This is not because they want to fuck you over. But because of different airlines and different systems. When a modification happens on one airline, such as a name change or correction, the other airlines involved will AUTO CANCEL the ticket for security reasons so the ticket will be completely lost.

4. For anything more that 3 letters, this is considered a complete CHANGE. And no, updating your TSA info will do jack. I have seen so many people lose tickets and thousands of dollars because of this. Regardless of why the mistake was made or why you need to change it (marriage, divorce, etc).

5. There is a policy on LEGAL name changes (marriage, etc) but again, alot of cases this is null if you have more than one carrier on your ticket.

That being said. If you did get through with an error on your ticket before, congratulations. But don’t leave it to chance. Just CHECK YOUR DAMN PASSPORT. And show up the the damn airport in the recommended check in time. They will NOT hold the plane for you no matter how much you paid for your ticket.

Booked ANA F using VS miles. My middle initial was in my VS profile, so on the ANA booking it now shows middle initial tacked on to my first name, like FIRSTNAMEM LASTNAME. Asian carriers seems to often have trouble with middle names since most Asian people typically don’t have them. I’m hoping they don’t give me a hard time, but like you say I’ll be sure to arrive to the airport a little earlier than normal.

I booked a Cathay Pacific ticket with AA miles two years ago. For some reason I had to call Cathay to choose my seat. The agent asked me if I have a middle name, which I do and it’s in my AA profile, but AA only transmitted first and last. Whether true or false, the agent said I wouldn’t have been allowed to board if I had a middle name on my passport but not my ticket.

By the way, I should have finished my story — the agent added my middle name and all was well, but that also meant I never tested the issue of whether there would have been a problem.

Woke culture and name changes being increasingly common, I see airlines dropping the fees and hassle to do this.

I had a friend who kept getting flagged on the no fly list. He solved this by always including his middle name. Problem solved.

I don’t have a middle name, and when I initially applied for TSA Pre, a middle name was required, though it did state if you didn’t have a middle name to put NMN. Well, that was stupid. My name as entered then didn’t match my passport or driver license. It took hours on the phone, through various levels, before they figured out how to fix it. As @oldkingcole said, bureaucracy run amok.

For even more fun, my husband has a Dutch surname, three words with spaces. AA doesn’t allow spaces. Still haven’t fixed that one yet.

Thattravelperson hasn’t flown on Delta, apparently. My first and middle names are Geoffrey and Steven. Delta ALWAYS changes it on my ticket to GeoffreySteven. My wife is always Margaretesther. There is no way to get Delta to change it, and it has not caused problems anywhere in the world, on several airlines. I don’t think anyone, even TSA goons, even notice.

Really important if you’re ever flying out of Hong Kong – make sure your middle name is fully printed on the ticket. John Smith (the way AA shows it on their ticket) doesn’t get you through security if your name is John Adam Smith (the entire name must show on the ticket). Naturally as an American who lives in Hong Kong it’s painful – a lot of problems putting an AA Oneworld FFN on a Cathay ticket.

I just booked multiple tickets with BA on Japan Airline. Its system does not accept the middle name. It attaches the first letter of the middle name to the end of the first name. I tried to correct on all itinerary but BA agents refused to do it as it is unnecessary. In the end, there is no middle name or initial appear on the tickets. It all depends on the gate agent who boards you. But with other airlines I always include middle name not just initial. As for Cathay Pacific tickets , I included the middle name back in 2018.

By the way, to change name, both BA and JL will not do it. You must cancel your ticket and re-book it. The canceled ticket went right back into the inventory within a couple of minutes and I managed to re-book it on the spot. Just had to prolong the conversation. However, one agent said her manager asked to email a scanned copy to forward to JL. However, another agent’s manager refused to do so. In the end, I incurred $50 cancellation fee. No change ticket outside 24 hr grace period.

Mobility Aid  is defined as an assistive device that is used by individuals with mobility impairments such as cane and walker, crutch and wheelchair.

Assistive Device  is defined as any piece of equipment that assists a passenger with a disability to cope with the effects of his or her disability. Such devices are intended to assist a passenger with a disability to hear, see, communicate, manoeuvre or perform other functions of daily life and may include medical devices and medications. Equipment used by a service animal (e.g. hamess, leash, vest) in conjunction with its work as a service animal is also an assistive device. However food is not equipment and therefore when tendered as carry on or check baggage, the standard size, weight, and baggage allowance limits may apply.

Mobility aids and assistive devices that are carried by the passenger can be accepted without charge as specified in the table below in addition to the baggage allowance, provided that the equipment is necessary for the journey.

From/To Destinations in the US

• No limit on assistive devices and mobility aids in addition to the free baggage allowance

Other Destinations

• One assistive device and two pieces of mobility aids per passenger in addition to the free baggage allowance.

For the passenger travelling on two or more sectors e.g. Manila - Hong Kong SAR - Los Angeles where there are different baggage policies for mobility aids and assistive devices, the most generous policy shall apply to all sectors.

The major change under this new rule Baggage Provisions Selection Criteria (Resolution 302) is to switch from following the baggage travel allowance and charges set and agreed on by the industry to following the allowance and charges of the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) in multi-carrier journeys. In addition, journeys originating from or with the furthest point being in the United States will be subject to another definition of MSC.

Most Significant Carrier (MSC) is:

The first carrier crossing the IATA Tariff Area (for travel across one Tariff Area).

Cathay Pacific is the Most Significant Carrier.        OR The first carrier crossing the IATA Sub-area (for travel within a Tariff Area). Example:

Qantas is the Most Significant Carrier.        OR The first carrier flying an international sector (for travel within a Sub Area). Example:

Cathay Pacific is the Most Significant Carrier. Example:

Singapore Airlines is the Most Significant Carrier.

IATA has divided the world into three Tariff Areas but within a Tariff Area there are a few sub areas:

For journeys originating from or with the furthest point being in the United States, exceptions imposed by the Department of Transportation of the US Government will be in place.

For instance:

If the exception applies:

• The MSC must be the Marketing Carrier for codeshare flights. Example: Los Angeles - Hong Kong SAR travel with tickets bought from American Airlines but the flight is operated by Cathay Pacific. American Airlines is the Most Significant Carrier.
• The whole journey should be taken into account when determining the MSC even if the traveller checks out their baggage at one point during the journey.

^The fee is paid in the local currency equivalent based on the exchange rate on the date of purchase. Bookings from certain countries/regions, including India and Nepal, may incur a sales tax.

* Other channels include the Customer Care, live chat service and any non-online self-service channels.

** Upon upgrading to a status, Members will receive a set of personalised baggage name tags, and they can request a physical membership card or additional sets of personalised baggage name tags online:

• Green members are able to view their digital membership card on web and mobile app.

For any sector departing from other destinations, the charge is paid in the local currency equivalent of the USD fee, by using the USD exchange rate at the point of sale on the date of purchase – the local currency fee is therefore subject to currency fluctuation. Bookings from certain points of sale, including India, may incur a sales tax..

The below Name Correction Fees will apply for any corrections to be made to the Name after the ticket has been issued.

a) If not the “same person” -  Not permitted b) If it is the “same person” and matches with the travel documents -  Permitted

• Middle name addition or deletion
• Surname, middle and first name swap
• Omitted part of name
• Title / gender correction
• Spelling mistake or typo (regardless of number of alphabets)
• Legal reasons (i.e. marriage, divorce, adoption) which can be validated by verifying the date of birth in the original and new document (Passengers are encouraged to provide document proof for the name change request)
• GST of 5% for Economy Class and 12% for Other Classes will be applicable on the above charge. The class of travel will be determined as per the first outbound flight.
• The above policy is applicable only to name correction. Name changes are not permitted.
• For changes due to legal reasons, passengers are encouraged to provide document proof for the name change request.
• Please ensure that the name entered at the time of booking matches your name exactly as shown on the passport.
• Name correction cannot be done if your ticket has any codeshare flight with any other interline carriers.
• Tickets cannot be transferred to other travelers by changing the name on the ticket. A new ticket will have to be purchased in the new travelers’ name subject to fares and availability of flights.
• For tickets purchased through CX website or directly from Cathay pacific office, you may contact the reservations office on 000 800 050-2163 for amendments.
• For tickets issued through travel agent, request to please contact the issuing agent.

Last name due to divorce : If a passenger has recently divorced and needs to revert to their maiden name or a previous name, they can request a correction to be made and provide a copy of their divorce decree or court order.

Changing the first name or middle name : If a passenger has legally changed their first name or middle name, they can request a correction to be made and provide a copy of the legal name change document.

I booked a ticket flying home Cathay Pacific through STA Travel unfortunately there's a typo in my name.

STA are saying I have to buy a new ticket & won't get any money back....
