Kiruna is a magical place known for its neverending, untamed natural beauty with everything from the Northern lights to ore mines.

However, one of my favorite activities in the area was undoubtedly going on a dog sled tour! I didn’t even know this kind of tour existed, but I’m sure glad that I had the opportunity to try it!

I’ve gone ahead and selected the top sled dog tours from Kiruna, so you know which ones will actually be worth your time and money. Let’s jump right in!

Quick answer: the 5 best dog sled tours from kiruna for 2024.

  • Dog Sledding Excursion to Kiruna with Fika

Kiruna Dog Sled Tour Reviews

1.  dog sledding excursion to kiruna with fika.

  • Duration:  7 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time:  9:00 AM
  • Includes:  Pickup and drop-off from hotel to dogsledding, warm overalls, winter boots, hats, gloves, warm drinks, cinnamon buns

I absolutely love this first tour, as it’s the most comprehensive of its kind – a definite must-see if it’s your first time in the region! The Dog Sledding Excursion to Kiruna with Fika Tour  lasts 7 hours, but includes a convenient hotel pickup and drop-off which makes things much easier.

From enjoying delicious Swedish treats to hanging out with the fluffy arctic dogs, this tour is filled with fun and adventure!

Right from the beginning of the tour, all of the staff members had a fantastic attitude and were very patient and friendly with everyone.

We got the chance to meet up with the dogs before actually going on the dog sledding adventure, which made everyone feel more comfortable. Not to mention, being able to pet and cuddle with these beautiful pups was something that I probably would’ve paid for, alone!

During the dog sledding portion, each group of 4 had a musher who will actually drive the sled to ensure everyone is safe and having a good time.

While we zoomed over the perfect white snow, we were able to just sit back and enjoy the view while taking plenty of photos and videos! About halfway through the ride, we made a stop where we made a crackling fire and took a break to chat and cover what we’d seen so far.

They served us plenty of hot coffee, hot chocolate, and tea, along with some soft, steaming cinnamon rolls to fuel up for the rest of the adventure!

Thanks to the provided overalls, winter boots, hats, gloves, and so on, all of us were nice and comfortable throughout the tour and were able to focus on the amazing experience. If you’re looking for a more complete tour, this is definitely one you should put at the top of your list!

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. husky tour sit and drive combo tour from kiruna.

  • Duration:  4 hours
  • Departure:  Svappavaara, 980 20 Svappavaara
  • Departure Time: 12:50 PM
  • Includes:  All taxes, fees and handling charges, All activities, Driver/guide, Pickup and drop-off from designated meeting points, Snacks, Coffee and/or Tea

As I was able to soon find out, the vast majority of husky sled tours have the participants ride behind the huskies while the mushers take the controls.

However, with the  Husky Tour Sit and Drive Combo Tour from Kiruna , you get something completely different. This tour involves operating a 2-person sled, so you and your partner in crime can zoom across the beautiful snow-covered scenery with just the dogs!

Our tour started out with us meeting at our predesignated spot, with our guide answering our questions and providing a comprehensive briefing beforehand.

We then got the chance to head to the dog kennels, where we met each of the furry friends and got the chance to get to know them better. After receiving instructions, we were able to then set off on our own through the fells and plains with the eager dogs taking us everywhere!

Honestly, I had a fantastic time learning how to drive the sled, and the approximately 2-hour sled ride almost made it feel like I was in a dream.

We then came back to the kennel, where we were able to help feed these powerful guys and spend a bit more time with them. We then got some time to rest ourselves, and I was surprised at just how tired we actually were, considering that we weren’t the ones running all over the arctic!

We were able to make a fire and warm up with some hot coffee and cake, which I felt was the perfect follow-up to the snowy adventure.

We chatted with our guides, asking them plenty of questions about the dogs and the history of dog sledding, which only enriched our tour more. If you have the chance, please don’t pass this opportunity up!

3. Sit Down Husky Ride Dog Sled Tour in Kiruna

  • Duration:  2.5 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Departure Time: 9:30 AM
  • Includes:  Coffee and/or Tea, Snacks, Arctic outerwear provided, Pickup and drop-off from designated meeting points, English speaking driver/guide, All Fees and Taxes

If you’re traveling with a group of people or the entire family, I cannot recommend this tour enough! The Sit Down Husky Ride Dog Sled Tour in Kiruna  is another great option if you have a packed itinerary and want a fun yet somewhat short tour to partake in.

It may be just 2.5 hours long, but it packs in a ton of fun, adventure, education, and something different from anything else in Kiruna!

I was surprised at the fact that they actually offered to pick us up right from our hotel, considering that’s usually only the case with longer tours.

Despite that, they came right to our hotel lobby and had a friendly guide there waiting for us. Once we arrived to the sledding center, we were able to receive a briefing and have all of our questions answered before going to meet the huskies!

Each sled seats 2 adults and 3 kids or 4 adults, depending on the configuration of your group. I enjoyed this, as you and your group all get to stick together and experience everything together which makes everything that much more fun.

They even let us borrow winter gear like coats, gloves, hats, etcetera, to ensure we were all comfortable and able to focus on the sledding tour.

Once we all got situated in the sleds, the huskies zoomed off and had us racing through the dense forests, over frozen lakes, plenty of snow, and everything in-between!

At around the halfway point, we took a break where we were able to enjoy some hot coffee and tea along with cake at the Lavvu (tipi tent). We got to cuddle and rub the huskies’ tummies before setting off back to the starting point and got some amazing photos along the way!

4. Kiruna: Guided Afternoon Drive Your Own Dog Sled Tour

  • Departure Time:  2:15 PM
  • Includes:  Snowsuit, winter boots, gloves, hats, and socks,  Guided dog sledding tour,  Swedish Fika with cookies, tea, coffee

The Swedish Lapland is one of the most beautiful places in the world, though it may not be as widely-known as perhaps more opulent metropolises. While there are many ways to experience it, I insist that seeing it by dog sled is perhaps the most magical.

The Kiruna: Guided Afternoon Drive Your Own Dog Sled Tour is one of my favorites, making for a great date night or group experience!

Limited to just 8 participants, this is definitely an intimate tour where you really get to know your guide and the huskies who will be hauling you over the fresh snowy landscapes!

The tour starts by the guides picking you up right from your hotel, so there’s no need to book separate transportation or worrying about how you’re going to get to the sledding offices. When we arrived, we got to meet all of the dogs and learn how to handle them before setting off.

I had no idea that this was one of the most sustainable, oldest forms of transportation, and it was cool learning about the sport’s history before setting off.

I was in awe at just how powerful the dogs were, and how in sync they all were working together. The arctic wilderness was equally as impressive, and I got some amazing shots along the Kalix River of the seemingly untouched, fresh snow blanketing the area.

Around the halfway point, we took a break where we sat around a warm fire in a Nordic tent, which was pretty cool! I learned that this is called a “Fika” which is in layman’s terms a “coffee break”.

We did enjoy plenty of hot coffee, as well as some Swedish cookies and other pastries. Overall, I felt like I’d stepped into a different world, learning all about Swedish culture in this region and enjoying an activity few get to experience.

5. Dogsled Adventure Kiruna

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure Time: Contact tour operator
  • Includes: Swedish Fika and a hot drink or lighter lunch, warm clothes

This is the tour to choose if you’re sticking to a tight budget but still want to experience one of the coolest activities one could participate in in Kiruna!

The Dogsled Adventure Kiruna Tour  is straightforward, yet offers plenty of education and insight into the traditions that belong to the area.

There are also a couple of different tour options to suit everyone: you can either drive your own team of sled dogs or have a professional musher do the driving for you.

However, no matter which one you select, you can rest easy knowing that you’ll have a ton of fun with plenty of breathtaking wintery views surrounding you.

This tour also includes a complimentary hotel pickup, so make sure that you’re outside at least a few minutes before the pickup time.

Thanks to the different tour options and the streamlined organization, I feel this tour is ideal for couples, solo travelers, groups of friends, and families, alike.

Once we all arrived to the starting point, we were given an educational briefing where we learned about the history of dog sledding, how to drive the sleds, facts about the dogs, themselves, and much more.

Something I have to mention because it deserves recognition, was just how well the huskies were taken care of. You can tell that they’re happy, in great shape, well-fed, and love the people that they’re around.

After cruising along the wintery scenery, we took a break in between for a Fika, where we made coffee over the warm fire and enjoyed fresh cinnamon buns!

We had a great time chatting with our guide and petting the dogs! It’s definitely a tour I recommend to all of my friends, though keep in mind if you want to drive the dog sled you’ll need an average fitness level.

Routes North - Nordic travel guide

4 of the best dog sledding tours in Kiruna

For many people visiting the far north of Sweden, a dog sledding tour is one of the highlights of their trip.

And it’s true: there’s a LOT to love about whizzing through a pristine snowscape with a pack of friendly sled dogs.

Kiruna is easily one of the best places in all of Swedish Lapland to start your sledding adventure, with tonnes of tourist-friendly amenities on its doorstep. Here are some tips and tour recommendations to get you started!

Kiruna is one of the best places in Sweden for dog sledding

Why is Kiruna such a great place for dog-sledding?

Let’s be blunt: Kiruna isn’t a beauty spot in its own right. Rather, it’s a large-ish, industrial-looking city that’s best known in Sweden for its enormous iron ore mine .

However, the area around Kiruna is stunningly beautiful. The frozen mountains and river valleys remain almost pristine, and they’re just perfect for dog-sledding adventures, with plenty of beauty spots to stop at for photos, snow angels and story telling around the campfire.

You’re also within easy reach of other big Swedish Lapland attractions such as the world-famous Icehotel .

Not only that, but Kiruna has two big advantages over other places that offer sled tours in Swedish Lapland.

Firstly, there are direct flights and overnight train services from central Stockholm (handy if you’re short on time).

And secondly, the city has a surprisingly good selection of places to stay, from cheap-ish hostels to high-end hotels that cater to a mix of Nordic businesspeople and international tourists.

The scenery around Kiruna is stunning

When is the best time to go dog sledding in Kiruna?

Snow can fall in Kiruna pretty much all year round, and it’s not unheard of to get flurries in September or even June.

That said, for the best chance of a decent covering of snow, you’ll need to visit between late October and April. Most Kiruna dog sledding tours operate between those two months.

Daylight should also be a major consideration when planning a trip to Kiruna. While December and January are very chilly, with an extremely high chance of good snow, they are also extremely dark months with barely an hour or two of useful light per day.

So if you’re keen to see the local scenery in all its glory (and still have a good chance of snow for your dog sled tour) our advice is to aim for the shoulder months of October, November, February and March.

What to expect on a dog-sledding tour in Kiruna

Most dog-sledding tours start with meeting the sled dogs at their kennels and getting a briefing from your guide, who will run through all of the basic safety instructions.

Normally you’ll ride for a while and stop for food somewhere in the wilderness – in most cases it’s a simple, traditional meal cooked over an open fire. Opportunities for chatting on the actual sleds are quite limited, so this can be a fun way to meet with other participants.

Longer tours can last for several days and include accommodation, musher training and other activities like ice fishing or snowmobiling.

For most tours, it’s possible to arrange to be picked up or dropped off from your hotel or Airbnb.

How much does dog sledding cost in Kiruna?

Just like in Tromsø , Scandinavia’s other big dog-sledding hub, husky tours in Kiruna can be expensive.

A half-day tour that allows you to drive the dogs yourself usually starts are around 2000 SEK (approx 200 USD) per person.

However, there are also more affordable options available, such as shorter tours where you get to meet the dogs and experience a shorter sled ride, usually just as a passenger rather than a ‘musher’.

So, is it worth the money?

Kiruna’s dog sled tours certainly ain’t cheap but for most visitors this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is definitely worth the cost.

Not only do you get to experience the thrill of dog-sledding through magical scenery, but there’s also a good chance you’ll be able to combine the tour with other bucket list activities like seeing the northern lights. Some tours like this one actually combine dog sledding with aurora spotting!

Having a hard time deciding which dog sled tour to book? Here are four of our favourites, including morning, afternoon and evening sessions that each offer something totally unique.

See the northern lights from your dog sled

dog sled tour kiruna

Setting out from Kiruna in the evening, this epic northern lights tour is something truly special.

After getting to know the dogs, you’ll learn how to steer your own sled through the darkness (don’t worry, the snow brightens things up a lot more than you’d expect).

Because it’s dark, you’ll have a very good chance of seeing the northern lights on clear nights – and whatever happens, you’ll wrap up the tour with a hot drink around the campfire and some traditional Swedish fika .

Check availability

Start the day with dog sledding

You can head out early on this Kiruna dog sled tour

Early riser? This self-drive tour might be just what you need.

Heading out in the morning, you’ll have a full five hours to practice mushing. Along the way, you’ll stop for hot soup and sandwiches in a Nordic tipi. There’s even a chance you’ll spot some of the local wildlife – from elk and reindeer to arctic hares.

Not a bad start to the day, and you’ll be back in town in plenty of time for a lazy afternoon and dinner.

Sled into the sunset

Sunset dog sled tour in Kiruna

For a mix of day and night sledding, try this option instead .

Departing from Kiruna in the afternoon, it’s a slightly shorter tour than the morning version mentioned above.

There’s less chance of seeing wildlife, but you’ll get to experience the wilderness in the daylight and then see the sun set over the snowy horizon. Of course, once it’s dark, there’s the potential for some aurora-spotting too!

Head far beyond the city

Kiruna dog sled tours

With free, early morning pick ups from lots of handy hotels in downtown Kiruna, including Camp Ripan and Scandic Ferrum, this sunrise husky tour actually gets going around 17km outside of town.

The sleds on this tour seat up to 4 people at once, making it a good option for families or small groups who aren’t too worried about driving the sled themselves, and just want to enjoy the experience.

Frequently asked questions

Still not sure whether to book your tour? These questions and answers should help!

Is dog-sledding a traditionally Swedish thing?

Some tourism websites claim that the Sami people, the region’s indigenous people, have a long tradition of using sled dogs for transportation and hunting. This isn’t true (Sami people traditionally used reindeer, not sled dogs ) and dog sled tours were first imported in the 1980s to try and bring more tourists to the area.

Is dog-sledding cruel in Sweden?

Dog sled tours aren’t actually that controversial in Sweden, at least from an animal welfare standpoint.

All of the companies that offer dog-sledding tours in Kiruna are held to high standards of animal welfare, and normally you can find information about their policies and commitments on their individual websites.

In our experience, Swedish sled dogs seem genuinely happy, at least once they are out on the ice and snow. But of course, there’s still a wider question about the ethics of using huskies for entertainment, so it’s important to do your own research and make an informed decision.

What should you bring on a dog-sledding tour in Kiruna?

When preparing for a dog-sledding tour in Kiruna, it’s important to dress warmly and bring appropriate gear for the cold weather. You’ll need warm clothing, including a hat, gloves, and sturdy boots. It’s also a good idea to bring a camera to capture the stunning scenery, as well as some decent filling snacks to keep you going during the tour.

Gaynor, Milos and the team are friendly and exceptionally experienced in their field and made us feel so welcome. We stayed for 3 days in their beautiful warm and fully equipped lodge and under their guidance and instruction, were privileged to dog sled with our own little team and snow mobile through the forest and over the frozen lakes. Arctic clothing and boots were provided so we were never cold! If I could give them 10 stars, I would!! We hope to return again one day!! Thank you! Read more Written February 23, 2024

Our guide Maurice was fabulous. He was knowledgeable, friendly and easy to get on with which is so important on an overnight wilderness trip, nothing was too much trouble. The dogs were superb and it was clear just how much Gaynor, Milos and their team cared for each and everyone of them. Whether you want a shorter trip or an overnight trip like we did I would highly recommend Lapland Sled Dog Adventures - you won't be disappointed. Read more Written February 9, 2024

The guides were very knowledgable and shared this throughout the ride, which made it all the more interesting. The dogs were very excited to be working in the snow and clearly loved every minute too. Well worth doing this tour, a highlight of our stay. They have all the outdoor cloths to borrow if you don’t have what is necessary, so you’ll be super warm and prepared. • rickl126 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Once in a lifetime incredible experience We’ve just come back to the U.K. after an amazing 48hrs in Kiruna. The highlight was the AMAZING private afternoon sled dog tour with Gaynor and Michelle. My wife and I and our 3 teenage boys learnt so much about the dogs, and the incredible views sledding through the forests and over the river in the thick snow were to die for! It’s often hard to get teenagers really engaged but they loved the trip (and of course the dogs) and rated it a true 10/10. The real highlight was when we stopped for coffee and fika and saw the most amazing nacreous clouds which are ultra rare and gave the snow an amazing pink hue. THANK YOU Gaynor and MIchelle - this was one of the most amazing travel experiences we have ever done! Read more Written December 18, 2023

If you can stay a few days, do it and enjoy the range of activities. Whilst the day trips look fabulous, the ability to do longer dog rides (steering your own sled), wilderness cabin lunches, snowmobile safaris and helping with the dogs is great for the whole family. The staff were great and allowed the kids to really get involved. They also went out of their way to help with our food tolerances. Would highly recommend it. Read more Written December 16, 2023

  • Sue W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing holiday with a great company From the minute we booked our holiday with this company we knew we were going to enjoy our time with Gaynor and Milias. ( Gaynor had sent us videos if her puppies prior to our arrival) and we couldn’t believe how much they had grown. It is obvious how much they care for their dogs and how well they are looked after. We stayed in their super cozy lodge which was really well situated and equipped with everything we needed for our self catering break We chose the two day sleddog adventure which involved going out with a great guide ,Geoffrey. We left base on the Wednesday morning and made our way to a cabin in the wilderness. This took all day with welcome snack breaks for us and the dogs and then a lovely lunch of reindeer steak sandwiches cooked over an open fire. Arrived at the cabin, and first of all helped unharness dogs and bedded them down for the night. We were allowed to help as much or as little as we wanted but we felt it was great to get to know our dogs learning how to harness them etc. Geoffrey prepared our moose casserole supper, and as there is no electricity was nice by candle light Then after dark we were treated to a fantastic display of the Nordic Lights. On our return to base the next day treated to a traditional wood fired Swedish sauna. Perfect On the next day we took a guided ski doo trip to the Ice Hotel which was well worth a visit, good buffet lunch and fun to look around the ice sculptures There was plenty of walking near by which was enjoyed The snow clothing provided was very good and although temperatures were down to -20oC we were never cold To summarise we had a fantastic trip and would certainly recommend this company Read more Written March 21, 2023

It was really amazing, the weather was super and we enjoyed a lot riding the snowmobile through the forest and on the lake and the river in Kiruna. We were two in a single motorbike (paying 2700 sek for both), switching the positions and being the driver and the passenger time by time. At the half of the track, we sat in a typical tipi (the Sami tent) to warm us up a bit and have a cup of coffee and a delicious slice of homemade cake. Thanks for everything, you are the best!!! I first decided on this dogsledding tour operator because they were the only company that was open to having our 1 year old and 3 year old on the sled! They really embrace the whole family and focused on the children throughout the tour. We chose the “Sit back and Relax morning tour”. We were picked up on time (actually the driver was there early!) and he was a very friendly guy from France. When we arrived at the kennels, we were greeted by Jordana (owner) and Ellie (employee from the UK). Jordana and Ellie were extremely friendly and immediately focused on the kids as I mentioned earlier. They helped us into additional warmer clothing and changed our boots and mitts to something a bit warmer. We then headed out to meet the dogs and Kent (owner). Again, Kent was super friendly and helped with getting the kids on the sled. The ride was pleasant and cold (a balmy -19). The surroundings were beautiful as all the trees were covered in snow and it was quiet. Kent talked about the dogs and about the dogsled racing that he participates in. After about 20 minutes we stopped for coffee/ apple cider and some of Jordana’s home-baked sourdough blueberry squares which my kids devoured! We had lovely conversations and even met a fellow Canadian who had just started working for Jordana and Kent. After warming up by the fire, we hoped back on the sled and headed back to the kennels. The kennels are very well done and cared for; the dogs were immediately fed and attended to. It is clear that the 80 dogs are part of the family! We met the newest members of their family as Kent provided us explanations for each of their names. Our kids loved cuddling these puppy huskies and getting kisses. History of dog sledding in Sweden

Dog sledding has a long history in Sweden, dating back to the early days of the Sami people, who have lived in the northern regions of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia for thousands of years. The Sami people have traditionally relied on reindeer for transportation and sustenance, but they also used dog sleds for transportation during the winter months when the ground was covered in snow and ice.

In the 19th century, dog sledding became increasingly popular in Sweden as a means of transportation in the northern regions of the country, particularly for mail and goods delivery. The use of dogsleds also expanded to other areas like logging, hunting, and fishing.

During the 20th century, dog sledding became a popular recreational activity in Sweden, with the rise of commercial dog sledding companies offering tourists a chance to experience dog sledding for themselves.

In recent years, dog sledding has become a popular tourist activity in Sweden, particularly in the northern regions of the country. Many companies offer dog sledding tours, from short rides to multi-day expeditions, allowing visitors to explore the remote wilderness while being pulled by a pack of hardworking and friendly sled dogs.

Sweden also has a strong tradition in dog sled racing, with many races taking place in the country, and the most well-known being the Femundløpet, a long-distance race that takes place every year in Norway and Sweden.

Why are huskies the best dogs for dog sledding?

Some of the reasons why huskies are considered the best dogs for dog sledding include:

  • Endurance: Huskies were originally bred by the Chukchi people of northeastern Asia to pull heavy loads over long distances in harsh, snowy conditions. They have a high level of endurance and can run for hours without getting tired.
  • Cold tolerance: Huskies have a thick double coat that keeps them warm in subzero temperatures. They also have a lower metabolic rate than other breeds, which allows them to conserve energy and stay warm in extremely cold weather.
  • Speed: Huskies are known for their speed and can run at a steady pace for hours on end.
  • Strong build: The breed has a strong and athletic build, able to pull heavy loads in tough conditions.
  • Love for running: Huskies have a high energy level and love to run. They enjoy working in teams and are highly trainable.
  • Temperament: The breed is known for its friendly and outgoing nature, which makes them easy to work with and great companions.

All of these characteristics make huskies well-suited for dog sledding, as they are able to handle the physical demands of pulling a sled over long distances in harsh conditions while also being easy to train and work with. They are efficient and dependable in adverse weather conditions, strong and durable, and with a steady temperament, it makes them one of the best dog breeds for dog sledding.

Dog Sledding Equipment Explained

Dog sledding equipment includes a sled, harnesses for the dogs, booties for the dogs’ paws, and a sled bag or basket for carrying supplies. The sled is typically made of wood or metal and is designed to glide smoothly over snow and ice.

The harnesses are designed to distribute the weight of the sled evenly among the dogs and provide support for the dogs while they are pulling. Booties protect the dogs’ paws from cold and rough terrain.

A sled bag or basket is used to carry supplies such as food and water for the dogs, extra clothing and gear for the musher, and any other necessary equipment. Some mushers also use a sled brake, which allows them to slow or stop the sled as needed.

HUSKY NORTHERN LIGHTs TOUR

This tour is ideal for you if you want to steer a dog sled through the arctic night and have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights undisturbed by civilization.

After picking you up from Kiruna town’s central area, we will take you to our home in Kalixforsbron, where you will meet our dogs and get dressed in winter clothing. You will usually be taught how to handle and harness the dogs. Two participants share one sled and take turns steering and sitting. The silent darkness of this winter landscape is special

The snow takes on a new meaning in the black night. Just like the presence of our reliable Huskies, which pull you safely through snow covered marchland, past silent trees and over frozen lakes. With a bit of luck you will be covered in magic when the Aurora Borealis is dancing in the Sky above. On this evening tour you will get a full polar night experience until April comes with it`s long and bright days.

CHECK NORTHERN LIGHTS FORECAST

Even though we can’t guarantee northern lights, you will still have a great time dog sledding at night. Furthermore if seeing the lights is vital to you, we recommend checking the following key elements:

A KP index of around 3 indicates the possibility of seeing the aurora in Kiruna.

Clear skies is necessary for viewing the northern lights, if it is cloudy or snowing, it will cover the light.

The light from the moon can impact your ability to see the lights, as total or near total darkness is important.

UNDERSTANDING THE KP INDEX

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, there is no guarantee they will appear.
