dooars tour package west bengal tourism

The Dooars or Duars are the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in North-East India around Bhutan. Duar means 'door' and the region forms the gateway to Bhutan from India. There are 18 passages or gateways through which the Bhutanese people can communicate with the people living in the plains. This region is divided by the Sankosh River into the Eastern and the Western Dooars. The Western Dooars is known as the Bengal Dooars and the Eastern Dooars as the Assam Dooars. Dooars is synonymous with the term Terai used in Nepal and northern India and form the only nitrate rich plain in India. The Dooars region politically constitutes the plains of Darjeeling Himalayas, the whole of Jalpaiguri district and Alipurduar district. The altitude of Dooars area ranges from 90 to 1,750 m. Innumerable streams and rivers flow through these fertile plains from the mountains of Bhutan. The major river is the Teesta besides many others like the Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa, Sankosh, Dyna, Karatoya, Raidak, and Kaljani rivers, among others. Monsoon generally starts from the middle of May and continues till the end of September. Winters are cold with foggy mornings and nights. Summer is mild and constitutes a very short period of the year. Dooars is the ideal place in Bengal for monsoon travelling. The economy of Dooars is based on three "T"s - Tea, Tourism and Timber. The main industry of the Dooars region is the tea industry. Thousands of people are engaged in the tea estates and factories. Several people are also engaged in the cultivation of betel nuts which contributes to the economy. Cultivation of other crops is done mainly for local consumption. The area is dotted by several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries which attract a lot of tourists from all over India and abroad, making it an important contributor to the economy and also employer of a number of people. The timber industry, flourishes in this region. A number of saw mills, plywood industries and other allied business also act as an important contributor to the economy. Dooars act as a doorway to Bhutan; thus, export-import industry also flourishes in the area. The towns of Jaigaon, Siliguri and Phuntsholing are important hubs of the export-import industry.

Dooars 7 Point Sightseeing Tour (In 1-Day) – Cost, Itinerary

Swarnab Dutta

  • June 23, 2023

Apart from the several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, Dooars is also home to several quiet hamlets and scenic attractions that are worth visiting.

While staying at the Banani Tourist Lodge in Murti, we planned the seven points Dooars tour that cover most of the Dooars region of West Bengal. It is a 1-day tour that covers 7 beautiful attractions and provides you with mesmerizing views of the region along the way.

In this article, you will get to know about the Dooars’ seven points sightseeing trip from Murti. It will include places like,

  • Samsing (Shyamsing)
  • Suntalekhola
  • Rocky island

Let’s see each of these places in detail.

We started our trip from Murti WBFDC Banani Resort in the morning, around 9 AM. Our first stop was Samsing.

1. Samsing (Shyamsing)

Samsing is a quaint village known as the “Queen of Dooars”, located in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.

Elevated at 3000 feet, this place is endowed with beautiful orange orchards, rich rolling tea gardens, forests, and different vegetation, all enveloped by wild hills.

It’s a place that seems like a photograph with rivers and mountains ruling the sites. A lot is there to be seen and felt!

You can visit the Samsing viewpoint, which gives you mesmerizing views of nature. You can also have a picnic on the bank of the Murti River, flowing through the village.

After spending some time here, we went to our next stop, Suntalekhola.

2. Suntalekhola

Also called Suntaley Khola, the enchanting village lies in the district of Kalimpong , West Bengal. The serenity and scenic nature wrap around the whole place. The name Suntalekhola means “orange stream” in the local language, as the area is known for its orange and cardamom plantations.

Here you can get to experience adventures through trekking, hiking through the trails, and go splashing in the cool flowing river. You can also choose to stay in cozy homestays, forest bungalows, or jungle camps.

When you reach there, you will have to leave your car and take a local jeep to explore the local attraction. These attractions include the hanging bridge, a small dam, and a few other spots. We choose to only visit the Hanging Bridge. It was a scenic spot to spend some time amidst nature. You can also walk to the Hanging Bridge but is not recommended.

We then returned to the location where we left our car, had some tea at the local shop, and then started to our next destination, Rocky Island.

3. Rocky Island

This is a relatively new spot for tourists and nature lovers. Here, you can enjoy the serene beauty of the Murti River and the lush greenery of the surrounding forests, with the melodious sounds of various birds. The sound of the flowing river is very soothing along with the gushing cool breeze.

You can also indulge in some adventurous activities like rock climbing, trekking, and rappelling on the rocky slopes. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can camp in the wilderness and explore the rich biodiversity of the Neora Valley National Sanctuary, which is home to many rare and endangered species.

You can learn more about Rocky Island in the article: Rocky Island (Kalimpong) .

From Rocky Island, we started our journey toward Bindu. We also had our lunch at a restaurant on the way.

This is a picturesque village that houses the second oldest dam in India, which is part of a hydroelectric plant on the Jaldhaka River.

Located at the border of India and Bhutan, the place is famous for its enchanting natural beauty. It is a realm of nature where the misty clouds descend to meet the earth covered with verdant forests. Laden with captivating sights, the village greets you with sincere hospitality.

You can also shop for Bhutanese chocolates, curios, shawls, and apricot wine from the small market set up by the locals.

After some shopping and spending time near the Bhutan border, we started out journey back towards Dooars. While returning we stopped at Jhalong.

Nestled in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, the secluded village is famous for its cardamom plantation and hydroelectric project.

The hill station showcases some amazing places along with some good adventurous experiences amidst nature. Witness some of the incredible landscapes and breathe in all the wild environments. Staying in a tent under the starry night sky is a spectacular view to look at. You can also enjoy bird watching, angling, and trekking in Jhalong.

It is also a hub of cultural diversity as it hosts the largest marketplace in the area, where villagers from different communities and even from Bhutan come to sell their products.

Jhalong is a lesser-known hill station of the Dooars region making it an ideal place to spend some lone time within nature.

We then returned back to Murti. Let me tell you a few points about Murti, the place where we were staying.

Murti is a scenic hamlet situated beside the Murti River that flows through Dooars. Placed perfectly in the woodlands, the extremely beautiful place attracts nature enthusiasts from all around.

Murti offers many activities for the visitors, such as bathing in the river, birdwatching, angling, and exploring the nearby wildlife sanctuaries of Gorumara and Chapramari. Camping along the river stream under the starry night sky is a spectacular view to look at. You can also just sit beside the river and experience the serenity of the place.

In this place, you can find a range of accommodation options, from government resorts to private lodges, where you can relax and admire the views of nature.

There is another spot in Dooars that we missed as we didn’t have enough time. Its Lalliguras.

7. Laliguras

Laliguras is a picturesque picnic spot situated near Samsing that is furnished with landscapes of tea gardens, forests, flowing rivers, and hills. It is located along the Murti River valley, offering a stunning view of the blue water and the green hills. The stretching meadows and the surrounding topography are worth looking into.

You can also enjoy the view of the Murti River flowing through the valley and spot some rare migratory birds in winter. Laliguras is a popular viewpoint of Dooars, where you can admire the beauty of nature and relax in the serene ambiance. Laliguras looks gorgeous during the monsoon when the river flows at its full strength.

These are some places you can visit as part of the Dooars 7-point sightseeing tour in one day.

It can cost you Rs. 2200 – 3000 per car for this tour, depending on the season and the type of car you choose. You can also have a decent lunch within Rs. 200 per person at any restaurant on the way to Bindu.

So if you are visiting Dooars, make sure to go on sightseeing and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Also known as the Duars this is the ‘doorway’ to the Indo-Bhutan border area. The word ‘Duar’ literally means ‘door’ in local languages here, mainly Assamese, Bengali, and Nepali. The Dooars area with its mesmerizing natural beauty and wildlife is located in the eastern Himalayas foothills in the northern part of West Bengal. These are the rich Terai floodplains of the Sankosh river that flows mid-way between Eastern Dooars in Assam and the Western Dooars in Bengal.

The Dooars is a land of silvery rivers flowing down hilly slopes, gorgeous green tea gardens, dense tropical forest covers, the charm of ethnic music in quaint Indo-Bhutanese villages, fresh-from-the garden food, stretches of meadows and blue sky with the great Himalayas looming in the backdrop, a variety of animals, birds and fishes, and endless adventures in the mountain streams and caves, low hilly trekking trails and what not!

History of Dooars

Originally, the Dooars formed a part of the Kamata Kingdom under the Koch dynasty in India. Then it came under Bhutan and later the British in 1865. The British left India in 1947 and in 1949, the Dooars once again became as a part of the Union of India.

Geography and climate of Dooars

Dooars has an altitude ranging from 90 meters to around 1800 meters, which makes it a rich storehouse of hilly and plainland eco-systems. Major rivers like the Brahmaputra and Manas in Assam and the Teesta, Murti, Jaldhaka, Raidak, Kaljani, Torsha, Sankosh, Dyna, Karatoya and Dima in Bengal add to its natural affluence.

The Duars area receives an average rainfall of more than 3300 mm from mid- May to September and is mostly closed for tourists at that time. Summers are pleasant and winters are chilly and cloudy in higher altitude areas. However, summers are warmer and humid and winters very mild in the lower floodplains.

People and culture of Dooars

The people here are an Indo-Mongoloid mix of Bengali, Nepali and tribal people. The tribal are the Bodo of Assam, the Rabha, the Mech, the Toto, the Koch Rajbongshi, the Tamang/Murmi, the Limbu, the Lepchas of Bengal, Oraons, Mahali, Mundas, Kharia, Lohara and Chik Baraik and migrant Santhals who come to work in the tea gardens.

Key cities in the Dooars area

Siliguri is the largest business centre and connecting hub to various places in Duars, with private cars and buses easily available from here. Other main cities are Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Goalpara and Dhubri in Assam; Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Malbazar, Mainaguri, Dhupguri, Birpara in West Bengal; Kishanganj in Bihar; some even consider the business nerve-centre of Bhutan, Phuentsholing as a key part of Duars.

Forest and animals of Dooars

The bio-diverse wildlife and woodlands form the Manas National Park in Assam, Jaldapara National Park , Gorumara National Park , Chapramari Wildlife Reserve , Buxa Tiger Reserve and the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bengal. The main endangered species here are the Royal Bengal tiger and the Indian one horned rhinoceros . Elephants and Indian bison (Gaur) are still in good numbers. Other animals found are – deer, birds, butterflies, and reptiles.

Activities at Dooars

Activities here include jungle safaris for wildlife and bird watching, trekking, fishing, rafting, picnics, cave walking, watchtowers, visit to local tea gardens and cultural centers, local sightseeing, etc. If you are here for the first time, it is best to visit the famous forests: Gorumara , Jaldapara and Buxa . For people looking for remote destinations: Samsing, Chilapata, or Raimatang are ideal.

Livelihood at Dooars

The economy here thrives on the three “T”s – Tea, Timber and Tourism. Other forms of cultivation are: bettlenuts, oranges, and crops for local use. Global tourism thrives around the national parks. As it is the Indo-Bhutan border area, export-import is also an industry.

Who should visit Dooars?

Duars is ideal for all kinds of travelers who:

  • Love nature and quietude.
  • Can’t do without some great flora and fauna. This is the home of the rare one-horned Indian rhinoceros and the Royal Bengal Tiger.
  • Enjoy thrilling activities like trekking, fishing, wildlife safaris.
  • For people who love the fusion of local culture. There are 18 doorways (Duars) through which the Bhutanese interact with the people in Bengal, leading to an interesting confluence of culture, tradition and lifestyle.
