Driven by founder, composer, and producer Michael Cretu, The Fall Of A Rebel Angel weaves together twelve conceptual tracks, known as “Chapters,” into one cohesive and compelling story. The music paints a picture of a protagonist’s progression, growth, and ultimate evolution. Gradual change, with sometimes psychedelic undertones, leads him to new horizons. Grammy and Echo-award-winning writer, Michael Kunze, has created the story in words to accompany the music – which will be featured in its entirety on the album’s multi-lingual Special Edition. Wolfang Beltracchi, one of the greatest and most controversial painters of our times, has crafted the album’s artwork in addition to 12 original paintings, each to accompany the 12 album “Chapters”. Created with the Enigma spirit in mind, the record confidently stands at the intersection of classical influences, dubstep, chant, intriguing vocals, and whirling, wild emotions.

Since releasing its groundbreaking 1990 debut, MCMXC a.D., with the hit-single Sadeness (Part I) Enigma have become one of electronic music’s most influential entities. Its success continued with the massive single Return to Innocence of its 1993 album, The Cross of Changes. Over the course of seven releases, Enigma has sold a total of 70 million-plus copies, scored 60 number ones worldwide, and achieved more than 100 platinum certifications around the globe. Now, Michael Cretu re-connects with the bold, pioneering musical sound-world and returns with his finest hour yet, The Fall Of A Rebel Angel.

On Oct 10, 2016 Enigma is releasing its first single, Sadeness (Part II), from the new album, The Fall Of A Rebel Angel. It is made available as a digital release as well as instant grat download. Scroll down for the single’s official music video.

With Sadeness (Part II) mastermind Michael Cretu has created a sequel to the project’s most notable and successful hit Sadeness (Part I). While referencing the famous Gregorian chants of its predecessor, the new single is based upon the classical theme of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and includes the voice of Asian superstar, Anggun. The combining element is a modern dubstep beat that turns Sadeness Part (II) into a piece of musical Zeitgeist.

LIMITED REISSUE OF BEST OF

Accompanying the upcoming album, The Fall Of A Rebel Angel, Enigma is re-releasing its famous compilation, Love Sensuality Devotion: Greatest Hits & Remixes. The best of comes as a 2CD, remastered edition including world-hits such as Sadeness (Part I), Mea Culpa and Return To Innocence as well as Enigma’s most popular remixes.

For Love Sensuality Devotion: Greatest Hits & Remixes, mastermind Michael Cretu has selected 18 landmark tracks from the first four albums which reflect his "Memories Of The Future”. Intentionally ambiguous, he has chosen the special title for his hit collection, LSD. "I'm addicted to music. So, music is like a drug for me. With this collection, listeners will be able to go on a trip, in a good sense." The ciphers stand for love, sensuality, devotion. "For me these are elementary terms of happiness, of a fulfilled life." Cretu sums up his intentions.

On Nov 11, 2016 Enigma is releasing its brand new project, The Fall Of A Rebel Angel. The music tells the story of a symbolic journey to redemption accompanied in words written by Michael Kunze and in paintings crafted by Wolfgang Beltracchi. The album comes in four different configurations:

Eight. At this age Michael Cretu was already sitting in the cockpit of a spaceship, floating through his imaginary universe. These days he may no longer be a young boy, but he still travels through space.

All he needs to navigate his spaceship through the universe is 88 keys - the same 88 keys that inspired him as a child in Bucharest. Whilst playing his piano he always imagined himself traveling through space and musical talent soon matched his limitless imagination. His music teachers and professors at various conservatories saw great potential in the young boy and soon realized that Michael Cretu would one day be a great concert pianist. After being sent abroad for further training, the Frankfurt Music Academy praised the young Romanian for his outstanding musical talent. There was no question; He was destined for a future in the world of classical music.

But it all turned out quite differently for him. In the 70s Michael discovered electronic music. It played to both of his strengths, allowing him to express his imagination and musicality in unexpected ways. Naturally, the synthesizer became his new cockpit to steer his spaceship out of the galaxy of classical music and into new planetary systems, new worlds and new music.

Today his cockpit actually resembles a spaceship. In his control room he sits in front of Merlin - an all in one computed mobile studio. Day by day he uses it to steer his way through already discovered and brand new worlds of sound. His excursions usually take him several years but eventually he will always return with new discoveries. This way, over the last 25 years, seven records under the project name Enigma came into being.

There is no other music project comparable to Enigma. It defies categorization. New Age, Electronic, Sound Collage, Ambient Rock Symphony, Pop Avant-garde? None of these labels fit and still all of them do. Each beat shows the unmistakable signature of an artist who refuses to be pigeonholed.

The amazing feedback and admiration he has received over the years is surprising given the fact that he never played "the game" like so many others. There have been no screaming fans, no hype and he had always succeeded in keeping his name out of the gossip pages. Despite this, he has still managed to sell 70 million records, reached the top of the charts 60 times and entered the top 10 an impressive 80 times. He stayed in the Billboard album charts for five years straight, got three Grammy nominations and has achieved Gold and Platinum sales over 100 times. To call Enigma an international phenomenon would be an understatement.

This time Michael Cretu wanted to again create something extraordinary. It’s his eighth album, and eight is known to be a very special number. It represents a new beginning and eternity. To Christians the number eight is sacred and Maori see it as the sign of kinship. For Enigma it means perfection.

The Fall Of A Rebel Angel tells the story of no one and everyone. Our "hero" is a human being like you and me. One day nothing seems like it used to be. He feels monitored and not in control of his destiny. He's scared and does not know of what and why. His life seems to slip away from him. While navigating through an imaginary town he has experiences that change him. He meets a priestess whose God is Marquis de Sade - a continuation of the legendary Sadeness (Part I) from the first Enigma album, MCMXC A.D. While wandering restlessly through this new world he learns that sexuality has nothing to do with luck, that faith no longer lives in cathedrals and death doesn't have to be a terrible thing. These experiences give him the strength to let his passivity go. He destroys his own reflection in the water of a lake and accepts responsibility for his life.

To tell this story, Michael Cretu's music summons childlike wishes, dreams, visions and imagery drawn from memory. With quotes from religious texts, literature and pop culture, it leads the listener through a coloured labyrinth of the subconscious in search of identity and security in a world that is cold, dangerous and indifferent to the individual. One can always imagine a distant cry for love within the soundscapes of this album.

The Fall Of A Rebel Angel is the musical parable of a sensitive artist's view of the human condition. The twelve musical chapters are based on an epic poem of the writer and playwright Michael Kunze included in the album. 13 paintings of Wolfgang Beltracchi, the genius painter who had to hold up a mirror to the world of art before he got the praise he deserves, complement them.

Enigma is a constant in the fast paced world of pop music. The gaps between his releases are long. The spirit and the ambition of The Fall Of A Rebel Angel build a bridge back to the first Enigma album and also lead the way into the future. Michael Cretu's new masterpiece was worth the long wait.

It was not three years this time, not six. But Eight.

Andru Donalds speaks about oncoming 2022 tour

Original enigma voices member andru donalds, who performed on 5 enigma albums, arranged and wrote many songs, agreed to peek into the upcoming european tour in november – december later this year., we met with andru in a cozy boutique bar to get insights on enigma songs presented live, differences between studio work and performing on stage and how the industry has changed during covid 19..

– Andru, please tell us what the Original Enigma Voices show is like. – I believe that presenting the Enigma experience live with the band & string orchestra is something that’s never been seen or heard before. I could describe our shows as magic on stage. We present Enigma songs and share our energy with our fans. We turn the place into a mystical cellar and something beautiful happens at every show. – What about studio work? It should be very different to perform live. – Right, I really enjoy working in a studio with friends and colleagues. A lot of talented people work in the industry and it’s always nice to collaborate and create new material. Live shows are a different kind of experience. We interact with the audience, feel the energy of thousands of people that come to the show, it’s absolutely amazing. Every show is an unforgettable experience. Thanks to our fans and management, who make it possible to happen. – What has changed during COVID 19 for artists? – Considering the complete absence of concerts, during the past few years most artists have lost a significant part of their expected income. These days you have to be creative about finding new ways of interacting with the audience, but at the same time, this is an amazing possibility for creative self-realization. – Thank you. Could you say a few more words to the fans? – I look forward to bringing this magic to the people. With fantasy and new arrangements & visuals so that the audience will never forget it.

Enigma performs ‘musical alchemy’ with Merlin, his Mac-packed mobile studio

“I’ve always felt like a musical alchemist. I take all of the ingredients and combine them in a way that nobody did before.”

When composer/producer Enigma dropped MCMXC a.D. in 1990, he literally turned the electronic music genre on its ear with his innovative use of Gregorian chants on Sadeness (Part I) , an international dance smash that featured vocals in both Latin and French. That, coupled with the far-reaching impact of tracks like 1993’s Return to Innocence , which sported a Taiwanese chant and a sample of John Bonham’s signature drum beat from Led Zeppelin’s When the Levee Breaks , all helped propel Enigma to sales of over 70 million albums worldwide to date — not to mention hundreds of millions of overall views on YouTube.

After an eight-year absence filled with only MMX The Social Song , a single in 2010 created with the help of his fanbase, Enigma returns with the broad electronic strokes of his eighth album, The Fall of a Rebel Angel , out today in various formats via Republic.

Rebel Angel veers from the insistent, stereo-challenging percussive drive of The Omega Point to the wide-open keyboard-wash palette of Lost in Nothingness to the sequel-of-sorts Sadeness (Part II) , featuring international female superstar Anggun on impassioned vocals. “It’s been a long, long quest, and it’s a very hard, long way until you find all the pieces that fit the puzzle,” Enigma told Digital Trends. “That’s one reason why it takes four-and-a-half years or more to get my albums done.”

Enigma looked to travel down new sonic roads for Rebel Angel . “I’ve always said that I hate to copy myself,” confirmed the artist born as Michael Cretu in Bucharest, Romania. “When I start with a new Enigma album, I always start with something new, without leaving the spirit of Enigma. But each time, it has to be a completely new approach, how I dive into my thoughts and my emotions. Doing the same Gregorian chants 25 years later would be impossible. I’ve chosen a new way for this album, and I’m very happy with the result. It is now exactly as I had it in my mind when I started to work on it.”

Enigma called Digital Trends from his current homebase in Ibiza to discuss how he creates his vast personal sound library, how Sadeness got “resolved” 25 years later, and how tension is key to the musical journey.

Digital Trends: You recorded The Fall of a Rebel Angel on Merlin, your mobile digital studio. The one you had before it was a grander, bigger version called The Alchemist.

Enigma: Yes, Merlin was something that was custom-made for me and my method of working. I have had this machine for four or five years now. The Alchemist was the prototype, and then as technology developed, it kept getting smaller and smaller. So I decided to make a smaller version, which, from the technical point of view, is more advanced.

Merlin also includes other gear like an Apple Mac Pro, LogicPro software, and, I’m happy to hear, surround sound speakers.

Right right right. In the early days, I just updated the technical elements. I changed to the new Mac Pro, and updated the hard drives. The concept of this Merlin is, while the outer surface survives with time, the insides can be renewed at any time as needed, so I’m always technologically up to date.

“I have a terabyte of sounds that I did just by myself.”

The Mac is equipped with the biggest size of RAM — whatever’s available, so that I can work properly. All the big sounds are in my libraries and available for my layering and building. The bigger I go, the bigger the sound files. (chuckles)

I have a terabyte of sounds that I did just by myself — all the atmospheres and other things I’ve done for the last 25 years. I’ve stored everything, including all the new sounds I came up with during the recording process of the new album. The library is just getting bigger and bigger and bigger. (laughs)

Would you say you’re always on the hunt for new sounds to add to that library?

That’s what I love, and what I’m known for — selecting sounds, editing them, building new layers; all these things. I’ve always enjoyed that very much. I’ve always felt like a musical alchemist, which is why I take all of the ingredients and combine them in a way that nobody did before. That’s at least the target. So yes, I’m always searching for the new sounds, as you said.

I know a number of listeners will access The Fall of a Rebel Angel via Spotify and other streaming outlets. Are you okay with people accessing such detailed music that you’ve created through streaming?

I have to accept the situation, because that’s how it is nowadays. The good thing is, the people have the ability to always carry the music along with them, whether it’s in a smartphone or a laptop, or whatever.

It is good, because in the early days, imagine — you would have to carry all these discs with you, and now it’s all in the smartphone. So I view it in a positive way, but my wish is you listen to any Enigma album from the beginning to the end, and not just pick between the songs. The ideal solution is to listen that way to better understand the music. I think that’s the best way. But if somebody likes one certain song and wants to listen to it 10 times or so, well, OK, fine.

With a record like this that’s comprised of 12 chapters, or songs, each chapter leads to the next part of the story as we follow this character’s journey from Circle Eight to the Absolvo moment. You really need to go from the beginning to the end to understand where the character is at any given point in the story.

Yes, you’re exactly right. I’ve always said Enigma music is like a book. If you read the book, you can’t just read chapter five and understand the story. You have to go through the whole book to understand exactly what’s behind it, and what’s meant.

I often use that book analogy too — you don’t start a book at chapter 29 and then jump back to chapter five; you need to follow the trajectory of how it’s presented to you. And I think Rebel Angel shows how the album format is still viable.

Yes, exactly. With an album like this, I agree with you that the album format is still important. It depends on the music, actually.

“Sadeness (Part I) was a kind of question, and now, 25 years later, here is the answer.”

Is there an album from another artist that just grabbed you when you were starting out listening to music?

(exhales) Ahhh… well, there are many albums over the many decades. I can remember the first time I heard Yes, or Elton John, or Led Zeppelin. I also remember 25 years ago, hearing Nevermind , the first big Nirvana album, which was amazing, or more recently, Rihanna, with her Umbrella . As you can see, I listen to completely different styles of music. And as I always say, good music is good music, and bad music is bad music.

I know people try to label the kind of music you’re doing with whatever the electronic phrase of the day is, but my view is the music is defined by the name of the artist. Your music should be called Enigma. That in itself defines the sound you’re going for.

It’s very hard, because it’s such a complex kind of music that includes elements from so many different kinds of directions, so it’s very difficult to classify, somehow. So I agree — the best thing is to call it Enigma. It’s a style all of its own.

It is. When MCMXC a.D. came out in 1990, we were hearing things that hadn’t really ever been done in that way before. That had to be satisfying to you as an artist, knowing you had that level of impact.

Yeah, I’m very happy. It’s the biggest dream that I could make a reality as a musician. To find a way to express myself — with my background in classical music, and also producing pop music and some other things — we had to put all my thoughts and feelings into a genre that nobody had done before.

So many people around the world love it. It doesn’t matter what religion they have, what talents they have, or where they live. Enigma is a global success; everybody from different cultures likes it. That shows me that music is an international language that everybody understands.

And now we get a completely different approach with the sound palette you’ve used for The Fall of a Rebel Angel .

The new album is still an Enigma album, but after 25 years, I wanted to remember a little bit of my beginnings. That’s why part of it I relate to The Neverending Story — religion and sexuality — or referring to Enigma number 2 [1993’s The Cross of Changes ], the meaning of numbers, and thought.

“It’s very important to keep tension in the music from the very first second until the last second of the album.”

Sadeness (Part I) was a kind of question, and now, 25 years later, here is the answer. To symbolize religion for Part I , I chose maybe the most famous Gregorian chant, the medieval Procedamus in pace! (Antiphon) [a sample of the Capella Antiqua Choir from Munich, culled from the 1976 album Pascale Mysterium ]. But for the new one, Part II , I wanted to do something that was completely different to Part I , so I chose a musical symbol for religion — the church organ. And what is the most famous phrase in that music? For me, it’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, which I’ve loved ever since I was a little kid.

I recorded Part II here in my studio. We had four different church organs, and it sounds like it was really recorded in a church, to get that real church organ sound.

I love the overall sense of space that’s inherent to the album’s mix.

I wanted to enclose you with it when the music starts, all the way through the 45 minutes when the record is finished. And then your imagination is projecting into your mind a certain kind of movie. This time, I chose to do that with elements of a story that gives you a more detailed entry into the sound.

By reading the story and listening to the music, it maybe opens a new level of understanding the music, and that makes it different from the other Enigma albums.

Anggun has what I call the underwater vocal at the beginning of Oxygen Red , before it begins to morph and change into different-sounding shapes.

Yes, because I’m working with, as you mentioned before, EQs and delays, and pitching down things, and then up. I’m trying to experiment with things until I’m happy with the result. You get to a moment where you feel it is exactly how it should be. I feel it, and then I’m happy with it — all the delays and reverbs, and all the atmosphere.

I think you get the tension in the story through all these ups and downs in the scenes, and in the music. That’s very important, to keep the tension from the very first second until the last second of the album.

I felt like we the listeners needed a tone break after The Omega Point with Diving, before we got to the next part of the story with The Die Is Cast . We need some time to absorb the overall message, and be able to get to the next phase without being completely overwhelmed.

That was exactly my intention. You expressed it perfectly. That’s exactly what I thought when I was working on the music. I said, “No, we need this here in between.”

It’s why I feel Lost in Nothingness is also perfectly placed after Sadeness (Part II). That transitions us right into the back half of the record.

Yes! It is as if you were inside my brain as I was doing this! (both laugh) That’s exactly how I felt it. That makes me happy — that there are people outside who are feeling the same way I felt while I was making it.

  • Audio / Video

High-resolution audio, hi-res audio, or even HD audio -- whatever you decide to call it (for the record, the industry prefers "hi-res audio"), it's a catch-all term that describes digital audio that goes above and beyond the level of sound quality you can expect from a garden-variety MP3 file and even CDs. It was once strictly the domain of audiophiles, but now that major streaming music services like Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, and Qobuz have embraced it, almost everyone can take advantage of what hi-res has to offer.

But what exactly is hi-res audio? What equipment do you need to listen to it? Where can you download or stream it? And does it actually sound better? We've got the answers. What does the term 'hi-res audio' mean?

If you're a Spotify Premium user paying that premium Spotify fee, chances are you've taken at least some time curating playlists, liking songs, and using the platform's easy-to-use (and recently revamped) user interface to discover new and old music.

But sometimes all that music or your favorite podcasts aren't available if you find yourself without an internet connection to stream them from — like on a long plane ride or weekend camping trip in the sticks. That's where Spotify's offline listening feature comes in handy, allowing you to download playlists, albums, and podcasts through its desktop and mobile apps so you can still rock out while you're off the grid.

Spotify is the world's most popular music streaming service for a reason. It has a massive catalog of music and podcasts, is full of cool music discovery and sharing features, and is really easy to use. However, with its recent price increase and the fact that it still hasn't joined most of its peers in offering a hi-res audio quality option, you may be considering jumping ship for its closest competitor, Apple Music, which counts lossless hi-res tracks, mind-bending spatial audio, Dolby Atmos Music tracks, and a catalog that rivals Spotify's among the many attractive reasons to switch.

But there's one problem: you’ve spent a lot of time creating playlists and marking songs and albums as your favorites in Spotify. Is it worth the switch? Will all that hard work be lost in translation?

Michael Cretu, born in 1957 in the Romanian capital of Bucharest, came to Germany during the mid-seventies. Although primarily a classically trained concert pianist, he soon turned to pop music and worked with Frank Farian and Boney M, amongst others. After first successful steps as a soloist, he decided to pull the strings as a producer and composer. His breakthrough – even on a global scale – came with the debut single “Maria Magdalena” and the associated album The Long Play by his girlfriend and later wife Sandra.

Enigma - Sadeness - Part i (Official Video)

By the end of the 1980s he began searching for new musicals paths and created the project Enigma released end of 1990. With a conceptual mix of atmospheric soundscapes, multifaceted instrumental colors, and enchanting voices, he led the electronic music genre on to new, successful grounds.

All of the Enigma albums were released in 2018 in a limited, colored vinyl edition and with explicit newly designed artworks. Due to enormous fan demand Universal now initiates a re-run of the complete Enigma studio catalog on black vinyl. The monochromatic covers will feature a special metallic look. The eight studio albums will be available as single releases as well as in the numbered The Complete Studio Collection . The 2001 compilation Love Sensuality Devotion: The Greatest Hits will also be released as a double vinyl album.

The Complete Studio Collection is out on July 23 and can be pre-ordered here .

Butterworth    On the Banks of Green Willow

Glière    Harp Concerto in E flat major Op. 74 (Soloist  Aisha Palmer )

Rautavaara    Cantus Arcticus (Concerto for birds and orchestra)

Respighi    The Birds  (Gli Uccelli)

After months of being cooped up Enigma invites you to a musical celebration of freedom.      We open with Butterworth’s beautiful lyrical idyll and homage to the beauty of the countryside: The Banks of Green Willow .      We then showcase the ethereal harp with Glière’s glorious and luscious Harp Concerto featuring our soloist Aisha Palmer .      After the interval we take flight first with the soaring Cantus Arcticus by Finnish composer Rautavaara taking us on a journey with migrating swans before Respighi’s The Birds brings us back full circle with his evocation of four different birds ending with the familiar sound of the countryside, the cuckoo.

Change of Soloist

Huw Boucher, who was due to perform with Enigma, has been selected to compete in the prestigious USA International Harp Competition (a triennial competition, this year featuring 48 harpists from 21 countries), which unfortunately clashes with our concert.          This is a tremendous achievement for Huw and we wish him the very best of luck with the competition.

We are delighted that Aisha Palmer, another outstanding Welsh harpist and fellow student of the Royal Academy of Music, has accepted our invitation to play with us.

Aisha Palmer

Aisha is a harpist whose Welsh heritage plays an important role in her performances, promoting compositions written by Welsh composers. Aisha has great enthusiasm and eagerness to broaden her musical skills showing her adaptability to perform a variety of styles.

Forthcoming highlights are performing two world premieres with the Andromeda Ensemble and performing with the Royal Academy Opera conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth. She recently performed the first concert premiere of Michael Finnissy’s Our Proximity to Gothic .

Aisha was the recipient of the Peter Simon Award for Harp which led to her becoming a Philanthropy Ambassador of the Academy. Demonstrating her reliability, communication skills and positive thinking enabling her to reach out to a wider audience.

Aisha is establishing herself internationally, winning the International Harp Competition “Walled Town”, Cittadella and receiving a Diploma in the Glowing Harp International Competition. A recent recognition of her talent was being presented with the Guinness Award from RAM.

A creative soloist Aisha also performs regularly in a variety of orchestras, these include National Youth Orchestra of Wales, Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra, Royal Academy Symphonic Brass, Gustav Mahler Orchestra and Thames Youth Orchestra. Working with conductors John Wilson, Ian Bousfield, Sian Edwards and Carlo Rizzi. She previously performed the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto with the Rhondda Symphony Orchestra.

Aisha has worked with renowned international harpists attending masterclasses from Isabelle Perrin, Anneleen Lenaerts, Gwyneth Wentink and Anne Sophie Bertrand.

Aisha is in her third year studying for her Bachelor of Music on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music. Previously she attended the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and was presented with the Junior Conservatoire Principal Prize.

Otava Yo

Otava Yo is a one-of-a-kind and unique band. Experienced folk musicians decided to create a slightly less serious than usual music project, without sacrificing traditional Russian sounds. The result was a formation balancing on the border of entertainment and historical references. The multi-million views of the clips and a few very well received records are proof that the folk has not died and is even very well. The musicians play traditional instruments, thanks to which the listener can immerse themselves in unique, often inaudible sounds and absorb them without restrictions. At the same time, all this is adorned with a great sense of humor. Watching music videos Otava Yo is great fun, but only live you can fully experience the amazing atmosphere that beats from the band at every step.

otava yo tour 2023

Interview with Alexey Belkin of Russian Folk Band Otava Yo

Otava Yo is one of the rising acts in contemporary Russian folk music. The Saint Petersburg, Russian-based band has an excellent new album available internationally titled “ Do You Love ”

The lineup includes Alexey Belkin on vocals, bagpipes, gusli, zhaleika; Alexey Skosyrev on vocals, acoustic guitar; Dmitry Shikhardin on vocals, fiddle; Yulia Usova on vocals, violin; Petr Sergeev on bass drum and darbuka; and Timur Sigidin on bass.

Otava Yo’s leader Alexey Belkin talked to World Music Central about the band’s background and the new recording.

Q: How and when was Otava Yo formed?

On the streets of St. Petersburg in 2003, where we decided to busk for fun. The feedback from audience was so great, so we started to busk in St. Pete on a regular basis. That time we were playing instrumental Celtic music. Only after 3 years of occasional street performing, we made a first record and perceived our selves as a band.

Q: What do you consider as the essential elements of your music?

We try to keep music live, in terms that we do not like to copy somebody’s ideas, we prefer to invent our own bicycle. If we see some great idea created by somebody else – it inspires us to make something too. Also, we try to keep the main idea of folk songs and do not complicate them. If it is funny cheerful dance song we would not make from it jazzy lounge R&B.

otava yo tour 2023

Q: Who can you cite as your main musical influences?

I can talk only for myself. I used to listen to lots of Celtic artists – Chieftains , Carlos Nuñez , Silly Wizard , etc. and also Scandinavian bands like Hedningarna , Garmarna . I love Latvian band Iļģi . Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Michael Nyman. All of them could make influence on my musical taste.

Q: Tell us about your first recordings and your musical evolution.

The first recording with Otava Yo we made in 2006. After all those sessions on the streets we decide to make live album with everything we played for that time. So, it was an instrumental album with just 1 song. Raw and live. No bass guitar and no even bass drum. Exactly how we played on the streets.

Three years later we made a new album full of Russian traditional songs, the most popular ones. And it was recorded with using all studio possibilities. We made nice arrangements and used more instruments than we can play live, invited some friends. So, it was fun to make that record and to see how good this music could be recorded.

The new album “ Do you love ” in 2018 took us a 6 months of work in studio. And I believe it is our most matured work for now.

otava yo tour 2023

Q: Even though you live in a city, your music contains elements of Russian village music. How do you find traditional rural folk songs?

Well, we live in cities, but some of us used to stay in countryside. I myself till 15 years old stayed in very small town in private house in suburb of St. Petersburg. I was able to go for a walk without seeing a single car, if I wanted I could make a campfire with my friends in my yard, so it was a happy childhood of a small town boy. But there was no folklore in my life. It was USSR and communists did everything they could to steal folklore from Russian population and to replace it with fake academic folklore. But in spite of this the folk songs are all over, all you need just to wish to listen to them. The most of the song we sing we just know. Some of them we found in ethnographic recordings or books. But we never went to ethnographic expeditions.

Q: Otava Yo uses various traditional Russian instruments. Tell us about them and how common are they now?

The most common – electric guitar and bass, the rest are quite rare. Well, to be serious, it is a problem now with getting Russian traditional instruments. You are not able to buy them in store, the only way to get such instrument is only to order it directly from the maker and then wait for a few months. I ordered my new Russian village bagpipe in May, and it is ready only now. But it is worth the wait. How common?… Well, not really.

otava yo tour 2023

Q: Who makes your traditional musical instruments?

Different makers. Some of them are from St. Petersburg, some from other cities. My zhaleikas mostly made by Anton Platonov and Dmitry Dyomin. Gusli by Alexander Teplov. The new Russian bagpipe by Vasiliy Ivanov. Also, I am waiting for the new gaita chanter with keys from Moscow’s maker Alexander Anistratov. All of them you may find on Facebook.

Q: Otava Yo is also known for making captivating music videos. Tell us about the process of making videos and who is involved.

We make them in picaresque way. I have directed all the videos we made. As far as I didn’t study how to shoot video, so I was not afraid to start to make them and just started to do it without understanding the details of the whole video production process. First two videos we even shot by ourselves, only starting from “Street cleaner” we have invited professional camera man.

The process – usually I start to think about the song for which I would like to shoot video. I listen to it more than a hundred times. Then I come up with the main idea and start to work on the script. Then with my partner Vsevolod together we write final script and plan all the shootings details including what kind of equipment we will use and where will rent it. Then we shoot 🙂

After shooting we edit it and make post-production.

Nothing special or unusual. The only important thing – I suppose if we would invite the professional director from the side the result would not be like what we have now, just because it is impossible to find, so folklore involved and oriented director in Russia or outside of it. So, I had to invent everything especially for Otava Yo. I suppose it is a unique product we made in a single copy, it is very difficult to duplicate. So that’s the whole secret.

Q: How’s the current traditional and contemporary folk and world music scene in Saint Petersburg and other parts of Russia?

To be honest, quite bad. The amount of folk groups which on regular basis can play the concerts is very little. The ones which could attract more than 100 listeners even less. We do not have infrastructure for world music. The quantity of world music festivals is also quite low. But I think it is changing a little bit and also with our help too.

Q: If you could gather any musicians or musical groups to collaborate with whom would that be?

Well, I like Hedningarna and Penguin cafe, I think we could make something interesting together. And Rammstein of course 🙂

Q: Do you have any upcoming projects to share with us?

We are getting ready for Christmas tour, which will happen in January 2020. Now we are in the middle of “Once upon a time” tour which is dedicated to 10-year anniversary of our second album “Once upon a time”. Ten more concerts to go.

We need to finish the new video clip, which we shot in August. I wanted to create an adventurous comedy video, and I hope it will work out as I planned. We have some ideas for our YouTube show “Zelyonka”, where we invite other musicians and play together. The last month we had a great guests from Sweden – Garmarna . We plan several other interesting acts within this show. And of course we are planning to work on new songs, and this is the most important thing for us now. The recent live video with new song “Zalivochka” which we just uploaded gathered more than 100K views just for 2 days; that means people look forward for new songs from us.

I love the music and your vocals.

I grew up with a lot of folk music in the 1950’s and 1960’s in the US. You are one of my favorite folk bands and I understand very little Russian.

I stumbled across one of your videos a few weeks ago and have watched dozens since!! I live in the US and it is unlike folk music that I have heard before, though your energy and spirit remind me of bluegrass and Celtic. Your joy in performing it is contagious and always leaves me with a smile on my face.

I’ve just discovered that a number of your videos offer subtitles – this has made viewing your performances even more fun.

Thank you for what you do!!

My wife came across an Otava Yo video and shared it with me, then another, and another, and we quickly became fans of your exhuberent and lovely band! We love your music, your enthusiasm and eagerly wait for each new video that you create! Your music videos are simply a joy to watch and listen to!

I discovered Otava Yo whilst looking for Moscow Nights on YouTube in 2017. Now I am completely hooked. I wish they would come and play in Yorkshire where I live.

the real Slavic spirit is in the rural life, not the city. May Otava Yo help bright that spirit to all peoples!

Wow! I love your music and your videos fill me with joy. Thank you so much! Your friend in Saskatchewan, Canada!

Watching fro m Newzealand amazing 👌

Even though I cannot speak or understand Russian I absolutely love your band and your music!

Just fabulous joyfull music and beautiful film locations, was trying to work out where the band was from and kept coming up with they have to be russian obviously but lve never heard that type of music. Love it and hoping once covid is under control the band can come to Australia.. world music adelaide would be a real lover of your music .cheers from australia.

Otava Yo, you are amazing. We love your music very much here in Wyoming in the USA. We are avid celtic music fans (Planxty, Bothy Band, Talisk, Tannahill Weavers, Solas, Carlos Nunez, et cetera) and one day an Otava Yo video came on our YouTube feed. We are hooked on your lovely music. It’s so obvious you love the land and culture of your country. Your videos are utterly captivating. All the effort you put into them does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. You have made our lives better with your music. Thank you so much! P.S. I am a Highland Piper of 35 years. Wondering if you play the Scottish Highland Pipes as well.

Otava Yo, I agree with all the comments above. Cannot tell you how much your music inspires me and your videos always put me in a good mood. I’m a US Marine currently stationed in Germany, and cannot wait to see you in concert here in Europe! Thank you for making such wonderful music!!!

No Canadian dates yet? Guess I will make the trip to St.Petes then 🙂 “Discovered” The Tale of Ivan Groove 3 years ago and have been listening to it ever since. I play it all the time at our gatherings. Love when people ask what language that is. Keep the music flowing!!

Love your music and your videos! Come to Alaska!

I found Ivana groove on youtube 4-5 years ago Listened to you guys constantly When you coming to Montreal??? I want to live in that old village by the canal! Little rowboat to go visit the neighbours. Small old house with leaky roof and a wood stove Heaven!!

What type of fiddle is Dmitry playing? The female fiddle players play more traditional violins, but his fiddle looks like it’s on steroids.

I live in the US. I usually listen to bluegrass and love music with lots of instruments. Started looking for folk music from other countries and found Otava Yo on YouTube. I am now addicted. It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the words if the music is great. I also like Hrdza from Slovakia.

They are just amazing, turn in on 24th of December for their ONLINE Christmas concert at 7pm (Moscow time).

What Aleksy forget to say is that they keep alive not only Russian folklore but European folklore too.

In the 1970s, the beacon of light was in the West and the USA. Today it’s in the East. While westerners try their best to destroy their roots, Eastern nation celebrate them. Just read what Aleksey says about what the communists in the USSR did with traditional songs, and you know what the new USSR in the West tries to do in with the same.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
