A Classic is Back: Eriba Touring GT is Lightweight and Affordable

Anyone familiar with the classic camping trailer, the ERIBA Puck , will be happy to know that the lightweight, poptop campers are back in a big (well, not much bigger) way.

The retro ERIBA design is back with the Touring GT by Erwin Hymer Group.

Manufactured by the Erwin Hymer Group of Germany, these lightweight travel trailers are not new to the European market. They have been bopping around across the pond since the 1950s. Erwin Hymer started bringing the trailers over to the U.S. a few years ago. Now the ERIBA Touring GT is becoming more widely accessible at RV lots around the country.

The original Touring trailer from 1979 was popular in Europe.

The sleek, European-style campers offer everything you need for comfortable camping or even full time living. The Touring GT trailer sleeps up to four people, includes a kitchen with stove, fridge and sink, full bathroom with shower, and plenty of storage. The Touring’s length is 15’ 5” and weighs just under 2,500 lb. The exterior is lightweight fiberglass with an inner wall insulation wrap.

The new Touring GT features European styling, queen or twin beds and plenty of storage.

Just like its predecessors, the Touring GT has an expandable popup roof that raises the ceiling height up to 6’5”. The interior has several layouts that include a large queen bed or separate twin beds. The dinette can be turned into a bed and features storage compartments under the seats.

The kitchen features a three burner stove, fridge and extendable counter.

The camper also has a clothes closet…

…and under-floor storage.

The compact yet stylish wet bath looks almost like a European sauna.

Surprisingly, the price for this new addition to the U.S. trailer market is actually affordable. While many new trailers of this size cost in the $40,000 range, a new Touring GT is about $26,000 with all the amenities. The Touring GT also comes in several special models including the colorful Rockabilly and Ocean Drive with red and blue exterior.

Do you know where in the US I can buy a ERIBA Ocean Drive trailer?

Hello Kristin. Since the ERIBA OD version is primarily sold in the UK, you may need to contact the company to find out if they ship to dealers or direct buyers in the US. Camper interior design has improved over the years, with big-time manufacturers like Winnebago earning awards for modern interiors featuring stainless steel accents, Corian countertops, and a clean look. But it’s no wonder that the RV that has seen the most innovative changes in design—the Class B adventure van —has taken Instagram and the camper world by storm. Peruse any #VanLife feed and you’ll find Bohemian-inspired wood interiors , unique tiling , and a fresh take on what mobile living can look like.

The latest camper to impress comes out of Europe and just debuted at the CMT show in Stuttgart, Germany. Eriba’s new Touring 820 builds on almost six decades of history for a brand that is known across the pond for both functionality and reliability. Steel cage construction supports an aluminum-skinned shell, and the Touring 820 boasts wraparound front and rear windshields and a porthole-style window on the driver’s side.

The 28-foot trailer looks modern and clean, almost like an updated take on the classic Airstream trailer. Dual-tone shading and understated striping—goodbye, dated maroon swirls—add to the sleek look, and from design to manufacturing, the entire trailer just looks fresh.

Inside, elegant interiors offer luxuries without feeling stuffy. Rounded furniture was inspired by modern yacht design, and dark leather upholstery contrasts with the lightness of the walls and lighting. A galley kitchen gets an upgrade from the sad cooking spaces of yesterday’s RVs thanks to curved lines, recessed shelving, and a slide-out coffeemaker tray.

Likewise, a bathroom across from the kitchen includes separate shower and toilet sections, and the white and wood elements work together nicely. A rear sleeping area takes advantage of the large-format windows, and the dinette can convert to a second bed when needed to sleep four.

The entire trailer is outfitted with a new smart home system that lets you monitor the camper’s systems both from a standard interior control panel and a smartphone app. Tap a few buttons and you can manage battery levels, fresh and waste water, and gas. Other options include a solar system and an entertainment system with 32-inch TV and satellite connectivity.

The Touring 820 weighs 4,365 pounds and will debut in Europe in spring 2019 at a base price of about $85,300. And while it’s unlikely to be sold in the U.S. any time soon, what’s most important about the Touring 820 isn’t in the specs and tow weights.

Instead, the Touring 820 shows that we can rethink what RV design can look like, even in a travel trailer. Innovative camper design has most recently focused on what a camper can do; we’ve seen motorhomes covered in solar panels , a camper trailer that unfolds into a two-bedroom tiny house , and another trailer that also functions as a boat .

The Touring 820 doesn’t do anything unique. Instead, it’s an excellent example of what a 21st-century trailer can look like when manufacturers forego the clichéd design tropes of the past and focus on sleek, function-oriented, simple design.

There was once a ERIch BAchem …

No doubt heard the caravan type PUCK of the world’s most successful models of the vehicle industry. Possibly, this small compact and excellent driving characteristics besitzende Caravan in this category of recreational vehicles the most successful model ever.

The PUCK 1957 was still in the craftsmanship company working Alfons Hymer, body and vehicle in the Upper Bad Waldsee.

Its design is based on the conceptual target of Mr. Dipl.-Ing. Erich Bachem back and on the constructive target of Mr. Dipl.-Ing. Erwin Hymer (steel pipe cage construction). Following these guidelines drafted the then still very young designer Bernhard Jehne the design, produced the drawings and BOMs.

For the space division was the Vorkriegsmodell Aero-Sports “godfather, Bachem 1937/38 already had developed and the famous glider manufacturers Wolf Hirth in Kirchheim / Teck (later Nabern) – a youth and student Bachems friend – was produced. This, in construction plywood manufactured construction, was from 1946 until about 1959, in somewhat modified form as “Hirth Tramp” to extend.

An essential requirement for the development of the PUCK 1957 was that the new model so compact and so easy to be had, that it was widely used by car types like the Loyd Alexander, the BMW Isetta, the Goggomobil and of course the VW Beetle pulled Could be. Initially without brakes and with the 8-inch “wheelbarrow tires” equipped, there were also with him later braked axes different manufacturers and 10 inches – 13-inch tires.

1963 Eriba takes an interesting, promising special position in the caravan sector: 852 vehicles are the result of the year 1963.

1966 At the time the record came new production models. Under the name “Nova” in 1966, a new section in the caravan development. Then came the 1967/68 recession. However, the demand remained. Growth in this period: 4.8%.
