London, United Kingdom

London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, is a must-visit destination for young adults. There is so much to do and see in this vibrant city that any traveler would need help to get bored.

London has something for everyone, from museums, art galleries, and historical sites to nightlife and shopping . For those interested in history and culture, a visit to Buckingham Palace should be on your itinerary.

The palace is the official residence of the British monarch and is open to the public during certain times of the year. You can watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony or tour the palace.

Another great historical site you should take advantage of while in London is the Tower of London. Built almost a thousand years ago by William the Conqueror, it has served as a fortress, royal palace , and even a prison.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Whichever alternative one chooses, always confirm the location’s safety before booking any accommodations in unfamiliar places or neighborhoods.

Saving money while traveling (food, sightseeing, transportation, etc.)

When traveling as a young adult, money can be tight, and it’s important to be smart about your spending. Here are some tips on how to save money while traveling in Europe.

First up, food. Eating out can be expensive, especially in touristy areas.

One way to save money on food is by cooking for yourself. If you’re staying in a hostel or Airbnb, look for accommodations with kitchens to make your meals.

Another option is to grab groceries from a local supermarket or street market and picnic in a park or other scenic spot. Not only will this save you money, but it’s also a great way to enjoy the local culture and scenery.

Next up is sightseeing. Europe is full of amazing sights and attractions with an entry fee.

However, there are ways around these fees if you research beforehand. Many museums offer free entry on certain days or during specific hours.

Some cities also offer free walking tours led by locals who share their knowledge and insights about the city’s history and culture. Additionally, many churches are open to the public for free and are often filled with beautiful artwork and architecture.

Transportation can consume a big chunk of your budget if you must be more careful. While taxis may seem convenient, they’re often very expensive compared to public transportation options like buses and trains, which can easily take you around the city at an affordable cost (although buses may take longer than taxis as they do multiple stops).

If you plan and book tickets online in advance for trains or budget airlines between cities (or countries), you could save significantly more than purchasing same-day tickets from train stations/airports directly. By being strategic about food choices, sightseeing activities, and transportation methods, you can stretch your budget further while still having an incredible time exploring Europe!

Staying safe while traveling

Safety should always be a top priority when traveling to a new place.

Europe is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, but it’s important to take precautions to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Firstly, research the destination and learn about any potential safety concerns.

This could include dangerous areas of the city, scams to watch out for, or risky activities to avoid. It’s also good to check government travel advisories before you go.

While in Europe, ensure you always keep your valuables safe. This includes keeping your passport and other important documents in a secure location – consider using a money belt or hidden pocket.

Be aware of your surroundings and monitor your belongings when in public places. In addition, it’s important to stay alert and aware when out at night or in unfamiliar surroundings.

Avoid walking alone late at night and stick to well-lit areas with plenty of people. Consider taking public transportation or calling a taxi to return to your hotel after dark.

Overall, staying safe while traveling in Europe is largely about using common sense and being prepared. By taking simple precautions and staying vigilant throughout your trip, you can have a fun and safe experience exploring this exciting continent!

Meeting locals and other young travelers

One of the best parts of traveling as a young adult is the opportunity to meet people worldwide.

Whether it’s locals or other young travelers, there are plenty of ways to connect with people and make new friends during your Europe trip . Meeting locals can be a great way to learn about the culture of the places you’re visiting and get insider tips on things to do.

One of my favorite ways to connect with locals is through Couchsurfing. This website allows you to stay with local hosts for free and get a taste of living in their city.

It’s also a great way to meet other travelers since many hosts organize events or outings for their guests. If Couchsurfing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to meet locals.

Joining a language exchange group or taking a cooking class can be fun to meet people who share your interests. Another option is conversing with people while exploring–whether at a cafe, museum, or park.

Of course, meeting other young travelers is also an important part of the experience. Many hostels organize social events like pub crawls or walking tours to help guests meet each other.

You can also join online travel communities like Couchsurfing or Meetup.com, which often have groups for young backpackers traveling through Europe. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself – chances are others are looking for new friends too!

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

• Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
• Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
• Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
• Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
• Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

My friend is taking her teenage daughter on a surprise 2 week Europe trip for her sweet 16 birthday this summer, and I promised to help her plan the itinerary. They are about to take a trip of a lifetime together and they have a big bucket list to get through. It’s an ambitious itinerary, but with just the two of them and the ease of getting around Europe, it’s totally doable and the best way to travel Europe in 2 weeks.

Here are the European countries on their bucket list:

• France: Paris & The Loire Valley
• Italy: Lake Como & Rome
• Greece: Kefalonia

Europe is such a great place to travel for teens. There are so many iconic sites, beautiful scenery, culture, and history that it is hard to be bored when you visit. Even in this article about travel for teens, the top five destinations are in Europe! Maybe you could even get them to put their phones down and take in the sites, or at least take a good selfie with them.

I personally love traveling with teens. They have so much energy and excitement about the world and they’re so much less needy than my little kids (who I also love traveling with). It’s just a completely different experience and I love seeing the world through their eyes.

Travel can be so good for teens too. It can really help them come out of their shell and help them to realize that the world is bigger than their friends and family and that there are so many different ways to live. Here are just a few benefits of travel for teens:

• Teaches Organization: Traveling takes a lot of organization to be able to create an itinerary and follow through.
• Encourages Budgeting: Travel costs money, and it’s important for teens to learn how to save their money and to learn to spend it on important things, like travel, rather than on things they don’t really need.
• Breaks Stereotypes: It can be so easy for people to believe stereotypes about different countries and cultures. If there’s one thing that travel teaches us, it’s that people are essentially all the same, despite our country of origin.
• Teaches Problem Solving: It doesn’t matter how much planning goes into your travels, something is bound to go wrong. Traveling as a teenager helps them to practice problem-solving in a safe environment with an adult present. On my last trip to Italy with my teenage niece, our taxi driver drove off with my phone and wallet. She was able to remain calm and help problem solve until we came to a resolution.
• Teaches Individualism: Traveling really does help you to discover who you are, and this is true for teens too.

Europe Itinerary 2 Weeks

Europe is also a great trip for teens because you can hit so many different countries and cultures in a short period of time. This is a great list of the best European countries to visit with kids. 

I’ve organized this two-week European itinerary to move smoothly between countries and to have very unique experiences in each destination. It’s a good mix of cultures and active, fun, and educational activities that should keep teenagers engaged and active, ready to make memories with you.

First Stop Day 1-3: London

London! Your first stop on your 2 week Europe trip! It’s a great place to start. You can immerse yourself in a new culture without the stress of a language barrier for the first few days.

Fly into London: Getting to Europe is pretty easy. There are so many amazing flight deals year round. Keep an eye on flights until you find the best deals. It can be tricky traveling with teens because of their demanding school and activity schedules. It’s a good idea to find out if they can do any kind of independent study so that you can go to Europe during the offseason, which will be much less crowded, cheaper, and more enjoyable. I’m taking my almost teen 12-year-old to London this spring and I found tickets for $300 Round Trip.

Spend time in this incredible city full of history and culture for three days. You could honestly spend weeks, months, and even years in this city and still not see everything. With only three days in London, I recommend using my London Itinerary Guide and selecting your 3 favorite days. I suggest following Day 1: London’s Main Sites, Day 4: Ancient History, and Day 6: Harry Potter (if you’re into that, and why wouldn’t you be?!).

Second Stop Day 4-6: Paris

The best way to get from London to Paris is to take the Eurostar. Taking the Eurostar from London to Paris is the easiest and quickest way to get from city to city. I love that this train, that goes under the English Channel takes you from one city center to another. Flying is fine, but getting between the airports and the cities can be a huge pain. Even if the Eurostar costs a little bit more, be sure to add the cost of trains or taxis from the airport into your flight costs. You can book your Eurostar tickets through ACP Rail International . I use them all the time and they are trustworthy.

-What to do in Paris-

Your next three days will be spent in the city of Light! With so many things to do in Paris, narrowing down where to go and what to do can be challenging. I’ve narrowed down my favorite sites and activities that you can easily see in three days. I recommend, of course, going up the Eiffel Tower, and also seeing it sparkle at night, dining on some delicious French food, visiting all the parks you can, climbing up to Montmartre, visiting Notre Dame, and as many museums as you can fit in.

Third Stop Day 7-10: Rome

My favorite way to get from Paris to Rome is to take the overnight train. It’s about a 14-hour train ride with a quick train change in Milan. If you wanted to spend more time in Milan or even a day in Lake Como (one of my favorite places in the world), you could take the overnight and take the train to Rome the following day.

-What to do in Rome-

Rome is such a beauty! Another city that deserves more than a few days, but you can definitely make your time here count. You can read my guide to One Day in Rome or my Family Guide to Rome . I highly suggest doing a Vespa Tour and a Food Tour in while you’re in Rome. Airbnb and TripAdvisor have some great tours. Be sure to see the Colosseum, Pantheon, and eat all the gelato, pasta, and pizza you can!

Fourth Stop Day 11-14: Greece

Spend the last few days of your Europe trip relaxing on the beach in Greece. My all-time favorite island in Greece is Kefalonia.   It’s got everything to offer for your first taste of Greece. Kefalonia is an easy flight from Rome and an easy flight back to London if you’re flying home through there. Ryanair offers amazing deals within Europe and flies to Kefalonia regularly.

-What to do in Kefalonia-

Kefalonia, Greece has so much to offer including friendly locals, inexpensive lodging, stunning scenery, incredible history, beautiful beaches, fabulous weather, and tasty food. Kefalonia is easily drivable, and I suggest you visit the whole island, taking in all of the sites and trying all the local food you can. Nine of the best budget holidays in Europe for young people

From beach breaks to bear spotting, here are ideas for trips to inspire without breaking the bank. Plus, top tips for cutting costs on trips

Hike hut -to -hut on Austria’s Eagle ’s Way

In 1829, the German poet Goethe arrived in Tirol. Perhaps he was gazing at the gorgeous Nordkette mountain, backdrop to the city of Innsbruck, when he scribbled: “Here, finally, I have found a place of quiet – a place of peace the likes of which I could have only wished for.”

Almost 200 years later, the Austrian region is still renowned for that tranquillity. The Eagle’s Way, or Adlerweg in German, runs the length of Tirol – stretching 256 miles in total. It’s broken into 24 stages between Kitzbühel in the east, via Innsbruck, to St Anton in the west. There are a further nine stages (not connected to the first 24) between the Venediger mountains and the 3,798m Großglockner, Austria’s highest peak, in East Tirol.

Highlights include the first three sections from St Johann to Kufstein, which take you past the Schleier waterfall, the glimmering Hintersteiner lake and through the spear-headed Wilder Kaiser mountains. For a longer holiday, start in Innsbruck and head west to St Anton, taking high, wild trails out to the loose paths and scree slopes of the Eppzirler Scharte, and later to views of Germany’s high point, the Zugspitze, and Valluga, which looks out over Arlberg.

The huts are high quality – wide sloped roofs, wooden beams and scenic terraces. The food is criminally underrated, too. Order Käsespätzle , Austria’s godly answer to mac and cheese, topped with crispy onions, for a carb boost. A bed costs €15-35 a night, with discounted prices if you join the Austrian Alpine Club .

Become a bear ambassador in the Central Apennines

Marsican brown bears and wolves roam the mountainous grasslands and ancient beech forests of the Central Apennines, in the heart of Italy, just 90 minutes from Rome.

It’s here, surrounded by limestone peaks, that Rewilding Europe is working to create wildlife corridors linking two national parks – Abruzzo, Molise and Lazio, and Majella – to the Sirente-Velino Regional Park, with the ultimate aim of extending the range and abundance of bears (and other wildlife) within the parks – as well as bringing new economic opportunities to local communities.

The environmental charity runs a volunteer programme (1 February-15 December), which allows biodiversity enthusiasts to become “bear ambassadors”, staying at one of three scenic communes – Ortona dei Marsi, Gioia dei Marsi or Pettorano sul Gizio – where historic architecture is surrounded by lush greenery. Volunteers live together in guest houses (for €300 a month) and work with the local team to set up camera traps, track local wildlife and work with local communities on coexistence actions – doing anything from building electric fences to pruning fruit trees.

It’s not only bears and wolves you might see in the hills. Look up and you could spot a golden eagle or griffon vulture circling the skies. The mountains and lush vegetation also hide glistening rivers, caves and canyons, and the open hillsides support Apennine chamois, red deer and wild boars, making for world-class wildlife watching. London to Istanbul by train

Few trains are more storied than the Orient Express, which began carrying passengers from Paris to Istanbul – dinner jackets, bow ties and all – back in 1883. The train has always been first-class only; the carriages all opulent wood panelling and lavish furnishings. Of course, the route also provided the setting for Hercule Poirot’s most famous case.

Today, the train lives on as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, which runs from London to Istanbul once a year. It costs a small fortune for a ticket, but there is a far cheaper way to take the same route – as long as you’re flexible on that wooden panelling.

Start with the Eurostar from London to Paris. Then catch the Nightjet sleeper to Munich, and, after sampling a beer hall or strolling the Englischer Garten, jump on another Nightjet train to Budapest. When you’ve soaked in the baths and recovered from the ruin bars (typically in dilapidated buildings), take the EuroNight Ister on to Bucharest, then finish the route on the Bosphorus Express , a 19-hour train from the Romanian capital to Istanbul, stepping out to the Golden Horn.

All the same city stops, from about £175 – a fraction of the whopping £19,145 for the Orient Express – and you won’t get in trouble for wearing jeans in the dining car. Stuart Kenny

Surf, sun and sand

Tangier, Morocco

In north-western Morocco, on a bay of the strait of Gibraltar, Tangier has spent its lifetime bending to suit the needs of an ever-changing world. Over the centuries, the port city has been all of the following: a Phoenician trading port, a Roman settlement, an international zone, a transport hub and a bohemian colony.

A short ferry ride from Tarifa in Spain, the “door to Africa”, has welcomed all kinds: soldiers, spies, diplomats, addicts, artists and writers. Author Paul Bowles lived here for 53 years, and American beat writers Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs spent time here in the 1950s and 60s. The latter penned most of Naked Lunch in the city – a chaotic story of drug addiction, sex and explicit behaviour.

After much investment, today’s Tangier is far from Burrough’s lurid depictions. Brothels and pharmacies have been replaced with boutique hotels. Yet it still feels like a Moroccan city with a chaotic medina and ancient buildings, but with a more European outlook than, say, Marrakech. Days here are usually spent slurping mint tea and hopping between cafes. Cafe Baba, popularised by visits from the Rolling Stones and Anthony Bourdain, is a solid starting point. Then there’s Cafe Tingis on historic Petit Socco square. Not forgetting the adorable cafe inside the grand, red and white-fronted Cinéma Rif.

You don’t tend to go to Morocco to get boozy, but there are a few nightclubs and quirky drinking spots in Tangier. Number One is among them; the cosy, unassuming bar, its walls hidden by posters and artwork, pumps out rock, blues and jazz until late. For top-notch sunsets, head to Cape Spartel overlooking the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Kicking back on Tangier’s sandy shores is great, too. Achakar beach is the best of them, while the Caves of Hercules further down are also worth a look. Surfers often prefer Taghazout and Tamraght, though Tangier’s Sidi Kacem can have decent swells.

Tangier isn’t short of well-priced places to stay either. Dar Sultan , a colourful guesthouse in the historic quarter has doubles from €120; La Maison de Tanger , a small hotel with Moroccan decor and an oasis-like pool, has doubles from €80.

El Palmar, Spain

People are always looking for the next somewhere. That land of milk and honey promising good swells, sun, quiet beaches and buzzy-but-not-too-raucous nightlife. Ericeira in Portugal was that place until recently inundated with digital nomads . But modern travel waits for no one, so it’s on to the next.

This time people are heading to El Palmar on Spain’s Costa de la Luz. As with any surf spot worth its weight in sand, El Palmar looks, to the untrained eye, like nothing more than a dusty road and a few low-rise buildings. There’s a reason it’s Andalucía’s surf capital, though.

It has a wide beach that’s nearly five miles long, beginner-friendly waves and surf camps galore. A-Frame Oasis serves pre- and post-surf snacks, chiefly avocado toast, smoothie bowls and kombucha. In contrast, La Torre is a cracking spot for a Spanish dinner: the croquetas and local tuna are superb. The nights in El Palmar are low-key lively. Beach bars, such as Chiringuito Gran Baba, spill with attractive twentysomethings grooving to Khruangbin . Above, the skies melt from blue to purple and orange.

Drivers have a lot of pull in this neck of the woods, too (public transport isn’t good), especially if they’re happy to ferry people to unspoilt beaches, such as Bolonia and Playa de Faro. Better still, if they’re prepared to shuttle folk to the windsurfing hotspot of Tarifa.

Kampaoh is a lovely little campsite off the beach. It has fully-kitted-out bell and triangular tents (from €59 for two). The guesthouse Hostal El Alférez is also a good choice (doubles from £75). Another option is to stay at Conil de La Frontera. The whitewashed beach town has more accommodation options, lively bars (La Luna) and affordable restaurants (El Tascon de La Prensa).

Biarritz, France

Biarritz was once among France’s most popular summer getaways for the glitterati, counting Queen Victoria and Coco Chanel as visitors, before it fell out of favour. The former fishing village got a new lease of life because of a chance visit from the Hollywood screenwriter Peter Viertel in 1956. Viertel was in town working on the film adaptation of Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises when he first surfed its gnarly waves. Fast forward a few decades, and Biarritz was well on its way to becoming Europe’s surf capital.

Architectural gems – Casino Barrière and Hôtel du Palais – remind visitors of the glory days. In contrast, clothes shops such as Fadead Vintage and vegan cafes such as Le Palm please a new wave of Gen Z and millennial visitors. Along La Grande Plage, the town’s main beach, people relax in deckchairs with bottles of vino. In front of them, surfers tear through the Atlantic Ocean waves.

Non-surf-related activities include visits to the Biarritz landmark Virgin on the Rock, while food lovers go for the fresh seafood at Marloe Biarritz or tapas at Le Bar Jean . People take sunsets seriously here. The best places to enjoy a sundown tipple are the buzzy Eden Rock Cafe , or the cliff-top favourite Etxola Bibi , where the views over Plage de la Côte des Basques are knockout. And there’s usually a beach party kicking off somewhere.

Hotels can cost a pretty penny in summer, but there are some charming, affordable accommodation options. Joyu Surf Shack in Bidart, about 10 minutes away, is popular with the it-crowd (doubles from £80 and dorm beds from less than £35). Elsewhere, L’escale Surf Hostel is a home-away-from-home style hostel in nearby Guéthary (dorm beds from £35). Adam Turner

• City breaks

Granada, Spain

Home to one of the oldest universities in Spain – at which one in three local residents is said to study in or work for – this Andalucian city is full of history, exquisite architecture and cheap eats. The most obvious stop for visitors is the Alhambra , the sprawling palace and fortress complex built by the Moors.

Set aside at least a few hours to explore the finery of Nasrid Palaces , the gardens at Generalife, the fortifications at Alcazaba, and the Renaissance-style Palace of Charles V. It is one of the most popular monuments in Spain and gets busy, so book in advance online at the official site ; cheaper tickets are available for European ticket card holders, or for visits to particular areas at night.

Nearby, walk around the hilltop Albaicín neighbourhood, the city’s old quarters, where there are viewpoints over Granada. You can also get a bus up to the Sacromonte district, home to the city’s Roma community, which is famed for its caves; at night, these turn into bars and host flamenco shows.

Besides its architecture and history, there’s another big draw for visitors to Granada: most tapas bars here will bring you food free of charge with a drink order (a tradition that locals are now rallying to save ). The Los Diamantes and La Esquinita de Javi (there are several) are favourites, and Pedro Antonio de Alarcón street is a student haunt, with plenty of pubs and bars.

Hostelworld lists low-cost rooms in the centre of Granada at Itinere Rooms (from £35) and Toc Hostel Granada (from £48), among others.

Lisbon, Portugal

Stroll by the seaside, get lost among winding medieval streets and experience the Portuguese capital’s nightlife, which was recently named the best-value location for a European city break . The yellow Tram 28 takes people through some of the major sights and neighbourhoods; it’s also worth walking around the hilly Alfama district, the oldest in the city, to discover views of Lisbon and stop by the Castelo de São Jorge, an ancient hilltop castle. For more modern culture, visit the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology.

For pastéis de nata try the famous Pastéis de Belém bakery, known as the birthplace of the pastry. Nearby there’s the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos , a palatial monastery, and Belém Tower on the seafront, where you can stroll and relax along the promenade. At sunset, find one of the miradouros (viewpoints) dotted across the city; a friend loves Alfama’s Miradouro de Santa Luzia.

The Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré districts are known for their nightlife; elsewhere, an old mansion turned hangout spot Casa Independente has emerged as a favourite nightclub, and as a coffee spot in the day. For day trips, the beachy resort town of Cascais, and Sintra, a picturesque village at the foothill of the mountains, are less than an hour away by train.

Judging from the results of the Hoscars (the Oscars of the hostel world), the city is home to some of the world’s best budget accommodation: Goodmorning Hostel , Lost Inn Lisbon (from €35) and Yes! Lisbon (from €63) have made the list.

Zagreb, Croatia

The Croatian capital is the perfect “pocket size” city, says Ivana Shiell of the country’s tourist board. It’s walkable and is said to have the highest number of museums per square metre in Europe. Stroll around the narrow cobblestone streets of the historic upper town: in summer, there are regular open-air concerts and stalls, and every year for 10 days in July (12-23 this year), the Courtyards festival opens up some of the area’s palatial buildings to the public.

Year round, there’s the landmark Zagreb cathedral and the much-loved Museum of Broken Relationships , which was set up by two artists – and exes – as an ode to all the strange and funny objects left behind after breakups. Other quirky offerings include the Cannabis Museum , which opened last year and is boldly placed opposite the city’s police headquarters, as well as the Chocolate Museum , and the Croatian Museum of Naive Art .

Browse street art and vintage shops at Martićeva Street, nab a gableci (cut-price lunch) at eateries around the Dolac farmer’s market, and take a nature break at Maksimir park. The restaurants, bars and nightclubs on Tkalčićeva Street attract locals and tourists; get an ice-cream and coffee there in the day, and drinks in the evenings. Croatia’s most popular attraction, the emerald-green lakes and waterfalls of Plitvice lakes national park , is a two-hour drive from the city. Buses to the park run from Zagreb daily, and some hostels, such as the Chillout Hostel (from €35 a night) , arrange day trips for guests. Rebecca Liu

Save as you go: six budget travel tips

The Interrail pass is a fantastically good deal, especially if you’re under 28. There’s a choice of “global passes” covering 33 countries and more than 30,000 destinations. The choices range from four days travel within a month (£171) to the continuous three-month pass (£623). You can upgrade to first class for about 25% extra. Be warned that seat reservations will also have to be bought; though the passes do include Eurostar and certain ferries.

If you’re planning to explore a single country, there are cheaper one-country passes available: Italy, for example, starts at €105 for three days’ travel, up to €218 for eight. Sign up to Interrail’s mailing list for further savings – it often has sales with discounts of up to 20% on passes. It’s also worth checking out budget train operators such as SNCF’s Ouigo in France and Spain (Paris to Dijon from €10); and Flixtrain in Germany and Sweden. If you’re happy to rough it, there are intercity coach operators providing budget travel across Europe. Flixbus has more than 3,000 destinations in 39 countries (Paris-Florence is from €73 this month).

Eurolines ’ services extend into Turkey and Morocco and include super-budget routes, such as Vienna to Budapest (from €9). For inexpensive travel around the Baltic states, try Lux Express, which offers trips such as Riga to Tallinn from €12. It also carries bikes free of charge.

The Czech Republic’s Regiojet runs budget intercity buses and trains across Europe. Counter-intuitively, its trains are sometimes cheaper than its buses on the same routes, such as a €16 rail fare from Prague to Budapest.

This tour is a fantastic way to explore the stunning islands of Croatia. The week is filled with relaxing with like minded people. This was a spectacular cruise. I stayed on the Novi Dan and had Jovana and Luna as the guides. They worked very hard to make sure every passenger had a good time. They provided history of each location, advice on places to visit for fun or recreation and continued to show positive attitude no matter the circumstance. The crew was very proactive and took us to good swimming spots everyday. The chef cooked 5-star quality food. Each dish was different everyday, you won't be disappointed. If you are traveling to Croatia the first time and want to go along the coast, I highly recommend this tour. It gave you the freedom to see different cities and have multiple activity choices. You'll have plenty of time to see everything, see the nightlife or relax if you choose. 5-stars to the captain, chef, crew, and tour guides!

We had a fabulous time on the catamaran Bowroling. Jack and Buffy were very attentive and happy to tailor the tour the needs of us and other passengers. Buffy is an excellent cook. The boat is well appointed, including the cabins. There was plenty of food and drink included and we were able to take our own aboard. On arrival we were able to text Buffy who met us at the entrance to the marina. This is not a criticism but it would be good if there was some sort of marker to identify the company Yacht Getaways. It would make it easier to locate people. Overall I would highly recommend this tour.

As a solo traveller we always felt supported and included. The boat is the perfect way to spend 10 days. Some highlights: cycling around Mjlet, the quiz night, the Dubrovnik night out, and Makarska!

The staff was really nice, they would give us suggestions for places, the food was very delicious. The boat room is pretty small and the bathroom also, but you’re not gonna spend a lot of time there anyway. They stop everyday in nice swim spots and the boat we have been on had also stand-up paddle board which I think it’s a very cool idea.

Commission offers 35,500 DiscoverEU free travel passes to young people

Starting this summer, thousands of young people will once again travel around Europe by train for free thanks to the latest call of the DiscoverEU programme. Today at 12:00 CET during the  European Youth Week  buzzing with  activities , the Commission launched the latest DiscoverEU application round. It will end on Tuesday 30 April at 12:00 CET.

In total, 35,500 travel passes are available. To get one, young people born between 1 July 2005 and 30 June 2006 can do a quiz with five questions about the EU and one additional question on the  European Youth Portal . Successful applicants will get a free rail pass to travel in Europe for up to 30 days between 1 July 2024 and 30 September 2025.

The call is open to applicants from the European Union and countries associated to the  Erasmus+ programme  including Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye. Ticket holders can plan their own routes or be inspired by existing ones. For example, they can discover a  route  launched last year, which focuses on cities and places making the European Union ‘beautiful, sustainable and inclusive' in line with the principles of the  New European Bauhaus .

Participants can also benefit from the  DiscoverEU Culture Route  an initiative of the 2022 European Year of Youth that combines various cultural destinations including architecture, music, fine art, theatre, fashion and design. Participants can visit the  European Capitals of Culture  which are on the  UNESCO World Heritage List ,   European Heritage Label  sites, or  Access City Award  label locations, which are cities that have gone above and beyond to become more accessible to everyone.

DiscoverEU is much more than just a ticket. Participants will also receive a  discount card  with over 40,000 discount possibilities on public transport, culture, accommodation, food, sports and other services in eligible countries. Additionally,  Erasmus+ National Agencies  organise pre-departure information meetings, and national agencies across all Erasmus+ countries prepare  DiscoverEU Meet-ups , learning programmes lasting from one to three days.

Social inclusion is a top priority of the Erasmus+ programme, so participants with disabilities or health issues receive support on their journeys. Since October 2022, the Erasmus+ National Agencies have implemented the  DiscoverEU Inclusion Action , allowing organisations working with young people with fewer opportunities to apply for a grant. This action provides extra support to participants, such as extra funding and the possibility to travel with accompanying persons. More than 250 projects have been awarded by the Erasmus+ National Agencies since the first call in October 2022, and two calls of the Inclusion Action are taking place in this year.

While DiscoverEU encourages sustainable travel by rail,  special arrangements  are available for young people from outermost regions, Overseas Counties and Territories, remote areas and islands.

The Commission launched  DiscoverEU  in June 2018 following a preparatory action from the European Parliament. It is integrated into the  Erasmus+ programme 2021-2027 .

Since 2018, more than 1 million candidates have applied for 284,000 available travel passes. According to the latest post-travel survey, 72% of candidates declared it to be the first time travelling out of their country of residence by train. For many, it was also the first time they travelled without parents or accompanying adults, and the majority indicated an increased sense of independence. Over two-thirds said that they would not have been able to finance their travel pass without DiscoverEU.

The DiscoverEU experience has given young people a better understanding of other cultures as well as European history and improved their foreign language skills. Participants are invited to become DiscoverEU Ambassadors to champion the initiative. The  # DiscoverEU Official group  has more than 96,000 members where young travellers can contact each other to share experiences and tips.

To apply, eligible candidates need to complete a multiple-choice quiz on general knowledge about the European Union and other EU initiatives targeting young people. The Commission will rank applicants on the basis of their responses. The Commission will offer travel passes to applicants following their ranking up to the limit of available tickets.

EU proposes youth mobility agreement with UK to help youngsters travel, work and live in both areas

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Commission proposed Thursday to start negotiations with the United Kingdom to allow young people to move freely, work and study in both regions after Brexit — the U.K.'s departure from the EU four years ago.

According to the EU, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU following a referendum in 2016 has damaged mobility between the two areas.

“This situation has particularly affected the opportunities for young people to experience life on the other side of the Channel and to benefit from youth, cultural, educational, research and training exchanges,” the Commission said.

When the U.K. was still a member of the economic and political bloc, its nationals had the right to live and work freely in the EU, with reciprocity for EU nationals in the U.K. Under the agreement proposed by the EU’s executive arm, EU and UK citizens between 18 and 30 years old would be eligible to stay up to four years in the destination country.

The deal would also allow equal treatment of EU and UK students in the field of university tuition fees. Most EU students must now pay international tuition fees if they want to study in the U.K. The Commission says these vary between 11,400 and 38,000 pounds ($14,200-$47,300) per year and are a strong deterrent for EU students who generally don’t have to pay as much within the bloc.

The Commission’s recommendation will be discussed by EU member countries who must give the green light before the executive arm can start negotiations with the UK.

“We have successful Youth Mobility Schemes with 13 countries, including Australia and New Zealand, and remain open to agreeing them with our international partners, including EU member states,” the British government said in a statement.

The U.K. has its own Youth Mobility Scheme, which it has offered to some EU member states. The Commission believes the British plan is less ambitious than its own proposal.

“Our agreements provide a valuable route for cultural exchanges providing partner countries are also willing to offer the same opportunities for young British people,” the British government added.
