Tips to find cheap bus tickets

1. book early.

You can find the best bus tickets prices by booking in advance ; the earlier you book your bus trip generally the cheaper your tickets will be!

2. Travel during off-peak hours

Summer and holiday periods are when bus tickets tend to be highest. These are still ideal times to travel and prices will reflect that. Traveling by bus gives you great flexibility. There are often multiple daily departures, so if you can be flexible with your travel dates or schedule, choosing an overnight bus or traveling mid-week instead of the weekend will help you save on transportation costs. If you can only travel on weekends, bear in mind that Sunday afternoon departures are usually the most expensive. If you can leave on Sunday or Monday morning , you might be able to save a few bucks on your bus tickets.

3. Find cheap bus tickets for $1!

You’ve probably heard about $1 bus tickets – and they’re no myth. How can you find an intercity bus ride for just $1? Megabus and Greyhound Bus are known for their economical services and offer bus tickets for as little as $1 at random on some of their schedules, generally within the first handful of seats sold. To secure these seats, make sure you book early. The earlier you book your ticket, the greater your odds are of grabbing a seat for a buck.

4. Do your research

Much like airplane and train ticket prices, bus ticket prices vary from one bus company to the next. Be sure to do your research and compare companies and prices. Busbud can help you do that as we’ve collected all the info you need and put it in one place, so comparing prices, schedules, and providers is a breeze. You can sort the results by price, departure time, and ticket types and compare what each bus company has to offer in a single search.

5. Choose your provider wisely

Some bus companies provide luxury services, while others like FlixBus offer a more budget-friendly service to take you from point A to point B at little cost. There are many bus companies that offer a wide range of services and prices. Depending on your travel style and budget, make sure that you choose the bus company that fits your needs .

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
  • Cost: USD $15.00
  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

  • Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
  • Cost: USD $8.00
  • Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

  • Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow's crazy traffic and its excellent metro network mean that the city's buses and trolleybuses aren't the number one option for tourists .

Moscow has hundreds of bus and trolleybus routes , many of which connect the city centre with its otherwise-isolated suburban neighbourhoods. Regular traffic jams mean that the bus network has not always been the most recommendable option , especially as the metro is so efficient.

Having said that, new bus lanes have opened up recently making it a comfortable alternative for certain routes. The bus can be a good, economical option at night , when 13 routes replace the metro after it shuts down (all starting from Kitay-Gorod metro and taking the main roads out to the edge off the city).

More modern buses have screens indicating the stops along the route, but in older ones you may well struggle knowing where to get off if relying on the Russian-language loudspeaker announcements .

If you do decide to catch the bus, tickets can be purchased from kiosks and metro stops, and the majority of lines operate between 6 am and 1 am.

It is nice to make a weekend sightseeing trip through the old city in the tram No. 39 or in the famous «Annushka», from Bulgakov’s «The Master and Margarita». Tram routes are being renovated now. New high-speed trains appear on the streets, replacing old yellow ones.

Marshrutkas (minibuses)

Moscow marshrutka

Marshrutka is a small bus that serves the same routes as public transport but much faster. The foreigners should know that only  blue with pattern on top  minibuses are preferable. They are officially admitted, accept public transport ticket there and you can take this minibus only at a bus stop. You can get to other marshrutkas not only at bus or trolleybus stops, but wave down your hand (like calling a taxi) whenever you see it. Coming across your destination point, you are just to ask a driver to stop (in a loud voice and better say it in Russian – «Ostanovite pozhaluista» – as most of the drivers do not understand foreign languages). The cost of a single ride is about 50 rubles (€0.50) and you should pay directly to a driver when entering the minibus.

2. Tickets in Moscow transport

1 or 2 trips.

You can buy tickets for 1 or 2 trips only in ticket offices. They are located at some bus stops throughout the city. Tickets cost 55 and 110 rubles (€0.55 and €1.10) respectively. Ticket offices sell all kind of tickets; ones for bigger amount of trips are more profitable.

Buying ticket at a driver

You can buy a single ticket at a driver when you enter a bus, trolleybus or tram. Drivers sell only single tickets, they cost 55 rubles (€0.55).

«Troyka» card

You can also use a card called «Troyka» – refillable card to pay for travelling on all kinds of public transport – metro, buses, trolley-buses, trams, monorail and green minibuses. Every trip becomes much cheaper with it.

Moscow Metro tickets

All metro tickets can be used at the surface transport, and vise versa.

3. Moscow night-time public transport

Night busses, trolleybuses and trams work from 1:00 AM until 5:45 AM, when all the day transport and the metro stops working. Some of the routes coincide with the day ones, some – work only at night. The traffic interval is 15 or 30 minutes.

I compared a $180 luxury bus to a $46 coach bus, and the expensive option was almost better than flying first-class

  • I rode on a $180 luxury bus and a $46 standard coach bus from New York City to Washington, DC.
  • The regular bus got me from point A to point B, but there weren't many amenities.
  • I was super impressed by the comfortable seats and the attendants on board The Jet.

Insider Today

As somebody who frequently travels between New York City and Washington, DC , I'm thankful for the many transportation options available.

Traditionally, planes are time savers, trains are the most comfortable , and buses are the most cost-effective. But there's another luxury option: The Jet.

As a true travel nerd, I had to see just how different this $180 bus service was from a traditional $46 FlixBus coach offering. Eleven hours of travel later and a notebook full of pros and cons, here's how the buses stacked up.

The coach bus was almost exactly as I expected it to be.

round trip buses

On the FlixBus, there were two seats on either side of the aisle. But there were a lot more seats, leaving less room in between each row.

There was really no comparison when it came to comfort and space.

round trip buses

The Jet had three seats in each row with an aisle in the middle, but overall, it had significantly fewer seats than the standard coach.

Everything was spread out, giving every rider a lot more space.

I had just enough room for my things on the regular coach bus.

round trip buses

The seats on the standard coach bus were moderately sized.

They provided footrests and enough room to fit a backpack under the seat in front of you .

I couldn't believe how great the seats were on The Jet.

round trip buses

The Jet provided a 45-degree seat recliner and pop-up leg rest. I had enough room to extend my legs without even being close to the chair in front of me, putting some first-class airline seats to shame.

On top of the comfortable cushioning and lumbar support, the seat was designed with technology to help mask any uneasiness on the road. Subtle up-and-down motions gave the illusion of an incredibly smooth ride.

I wish airplane seats would adopt this feature to reduce the movement of unwanted turbulence.

The coach bus didn't have many amenities.

round trip buses

The coach bus provided straightforward service, getting you from point A to point B.

Although there weren't many amenities on board, there were at least convenient trash bags hanging on the aisle seats.

When paying more than $100 for a bus ticket, you hope for a few added perks, and The Jet delivered.

round trip buses

My favorite perk was probably the attendants on board.

They passed out hot towels at the beginning of the ride, served drinks, and cleaned up after us. One attendant even offered Jet blankets to make my journey more comfortable.

The bathroom on the regular bus wasn't fancy, but it was functional.

round trip buses

I appreciated the small restroom on the FlixBus.

The Jet's amenities were exceptional for a bus.

round trip buses

The restroom had a sink, counter space, backlit mirror lights, a full-length mirror, and enough space to change into something cozy for the ride.

We made a rest stop on the regular bus to stretch our legs and refuel.

round trip buses

Although there wasn't food on the FlixBus, we got a 15-minute rest-stop break, where I picked up a bottle of water and a Dunkin' iced coffee to fuel me for the last three hours on the road.

I was offered free drinks and cheap snacks on The Jet.

round trip buses

Each Jet ticket came with two complimentary alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, or seltzer, and a list of food items on sale for as little as $1.

Although both services promised WiFi, only one worked for me.

round trip buses

As a remote worker who enjoys traveling, it's essential that my mode of transportation has internet access.

The buses were supposed to provide WiFi, but FlixBus' service was down during my ride. Thankfully, the power plugs on board worked, and I used my phone's hot spot instead.

I was able to comfortably get some work done on The Jet.

round trip buses

The Jet's WiFi worked, and the service speed was fast enough for my fiancé to stream movies while I uploaded and downloaded significant file-size assets to my computer.

Trains and planes are still probably the better option for most, but I'll splurge on The Jet if I'm riding the bus.

round trip buses

When comparing the bus services , traffic is the great equalizer. Even though the buses departed on time, the 4 ½-hour trip took more than 5 ½ hours in each direction.

If time is your biggest concern, I'd stick with a train or plane. But if you're a remote worker traveling during the day like me, The Jet may be the best option.

I think it was definitely worth the price tag . The fantastic service, luxurious seats, and strong internet connection made it the clear travel winner.

Correction: August 7, 2023 — An earlier version of this story misstated the number of seats in each row on the Jet bus. There are three, not four.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Thursday 25 April 2024 10:29, UK

round trip buses

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

An underground train pulls into Leicester Square station in central London February 11, 2014. A planned 48-hour strike this week by staff on London's underground rail network which threatened to bring travel misery for millions has been suspended to allow further talks, unions said on Tuesday. Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Tuesday 2 May

Wednesday 3 May

Thursday 4 May

Friday 5 May

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

How can I stay in the loop?

You can use the National Rail's journey planner to see when trains are running.

Be sure to check it close to when you plan to travel, as it will be updated regularly.

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

Casco Bay Lines OKs first rate hike in 15 years, and it’s a big one – for tourists

Pending PUC approval, the ferry service will increase single, round-trip ticket prices 82% on June 1, while lowering prices for longer-term passes, benefiting residents and people who work on the islands.

Ferry fares will increase 82% on June 1, when a flat fee of $14 is instituted for all round-trip island ferry trips. Visitors to Peaks Island and the other Casco Bay islands may experience a bit of sticker shock this summer.

The Casco Bay Island Transit District voted 10-1 on Thursday to approve an 82% increase in round-trip ticket prices, while lowering prices for longer-term passes, benefiting residents and people who work on the islands. The ferry service’s first price hike in 15 years is designed to offset a ballooning deficit as operating costs mount and revenue remains flat.

The new fare schedule, which still needs approval from the Public Utilities Commission, will institute a flat $14 rate for all islands served by the Casco Bay Lines – Peaks Island, Little Diamond Island, Great Diamond Island, Long Island, Chebeague Island and Cliff Island – beginning June 1.

The current fare structure for the peak summer season has round-trip tickets for Peaks Island at $7.70 and higher rates for the other islands, capping off at $11.55 for Cliff Island.

It’s a steep increase, but both the board of directors and island residents say it’s long overdue.

Board member Joe Donovan hopes the decision to offer half-price tickets to children under 18 – instead of those under 14 – will help encourage island living for more families. Seniors and people with disabilities, who already qualify for half-price tickets, will continue to be eligible for lower fares. Advertisement

Jennifer Lavanture, chair of the finance committee, said the operating loss has been “growing out of bounds and really unacceptably” for a number of years, with expenses almost doubling the rate of inflation. The agency’s fiscal year 2024 budget featured a roughly $4.3 million deficit but broke even with an increase in grant funding.

The 2024 budget was passed with the requirement to reduce the operating loss by 25% – or about $1 million – through a combination of expense reduction and revenue increase.

The deficit has been growing steadily since at least 2019 even without the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated the existing challenges.

Casco Bay Lines is largely funded by the fares it charges for regular ferry service. The remaining revenue comes from specialty offerings like cruises and tours, as well as state and federal funds.

But that funding is not always a guarantee, and Lavanture said Thursday that it was important for the board to act quickly and before the start of the summer season so that more drastic action isn’t required down the line.

“I don’t think we can afford to wait,” she said. Advertisement

The new rate structure would include the $14 flat rate for adults in peak season and a $7 rate for seniors, people with disabilities, and children between 5 and 17 years old. Reduced fares of $7.20 and $3.60 would be available in the offseason.

The proposal eliminates commuter books, blocks of five discounted tickets, which were subject to abuse by people using them for group discounts.

round trip buses

Casco Bay Lines had just over 1 million riders in 2022 between the regular ferry service and tours. Of those, about 737,000, or roughly 74%, were traveling to and from Peaks Island. Figures from 2023 were not available Thursday.

Some have suggested that a flat rate could help draw visitors to islands other than Peaks, which currently offers the least expensive ticket. Advertisement

The proposal restructures and reduces the cost of the 30-day and annual passes while adding a 90-day option.

For people who only leave the islands infrequently, prices will go up.

But John Whitman, a Peaks Island resident, said that for people who leave, say, once a month, the extra $6 during the summer and an extra $3 during the cooler months is “not the end of the world.”

“People expect prices to go up. This is long overdue,” he said.

The new fare structure decreases the annual pass – which currently ranges from $906 for Peaks Island to $1,376 for Cliff Island – to $432 for all islands and adds a half-price option.

The 90-day pass will be $144 during peak season and $96 during the offseason, with half-price offerings as well. Advertisement

The elimination of the commuter books, which offered five tickets for $23.95, will be a blow to some, but some of that loss will be offset by the decrease in the monthly fare from $82.50 to $32, with half-price and offseason options.

Last year, the ferry service sold just 45 annual and 800 monthly passes.

BIGGER IMPACT ON TOURISTS

James Luedke, a board member, said it didn’t quite sit right that the increase would negatively and disproportionately impact tourists, but he welcomed a flat rate across all islands, which he hopes will reduce the complexity of the ticketing system and give way to the faster adoption of electronic ticketing technology.

The Casco Bay Lines ferry Wabanaki returns to Portland on Thursday. Ferry fares will increase 82% on June 1, when a flat fee of $14 is instituted for all island ferry trips. It’s the first fare increase in 15 years and is designed to offset a ballooning deficit due to high operating costs. Gregory Rec/Staff Photographer

Lavanture said the changes are projected to increase revenue by about $500,000, though various scenarios placed impacts anywhere from $200,000 to $1.6 million.

Transit district officials also are working on proposals to cut down on operating expenses. The proposal did not expressly address cruise, freight or vehicle pricing, but those conversations are in the works. Advertisement

Some island residents said they were disappointed that there was no friends or family discount, but board members said they plan to explore that possibility once the new costs get underway and they can devote the necessary resources to working through eligibility and enforceability issues.

This is not the first time that the quasi-municipal corporation has discussed a price hike.

The finance committee last summer weighed several scenarios that would have raised rates anywhere from 8% to 16% but also would have reduced staff, terminal security and the number of trips on the schedule. Members would have needed to make a decision quickly in order to have the changes in place by the start of the fiscal year in the fall, and the proposals ultimately never advanced.

Casco Bay ferry service considering a ticket-price hike

Lavanture said Thursday that she wasn’t necessarily proud to be the one to bring a price increase forward, but that it was critical to the financial longevity of the ferry service.

The board will evaluate ticket prices every one to two years.

“It’s a muscle we need to be building,” Lavanture said. “ We can’t let another 15 years go by.”
