Despite the ever-present challenges, Fairport Convention’s 55th Anniversary celebrations continue, with Spring 2022 tour, presenting 30 dates across the UK in April, May and June, ahead of a triumphant return to the fields of Oxfordshire at their Cropredy Convention this August.
The Spring 2022 tour kicks-off on Thursday, April 28 at Settle’s Grade II listed Victorian Music Hall, before taking in a further 30 dates across the length and breadth of England and Wales.
And whilst it’s been far too long since fans have had the opportunity to attend Fairport’s Spring Tour, it’s been an even longer wait for the return of their annual festival, Cropredy Convention!

Best earth day songs: 30 save the environment classics.
A record-breaking attendance at the festival in 2019 was followed by an enforced hiatus in 2020 – what would have been the festivals 40th Anniversary – and again in 2021. Three years down the road, fans and the band alike are expecting an emotional return on August 11, 12, and 13 2022 .
Fairport’s traditional Saturday night headline slot at the festival will also highlight another anniversary slated for 2020; 50 years since the release of Full House ; the band’s seminal 1970 LP for Island Records.
Also on the bill is a much-anticipated performance from Fairport alumnus Richard Thompson, torch-bearing Londoners Turin Brakes, acclaimed Folk soloist Seth Lakeman, plus, a very special show from Steve Hackett of Genesis , who’ll be celebrating another 50 year milestone; the release of the legendary Foxtrot album. After a two year hiatus, it’s sure to be one hell of a party.
Fairport Convention’s Spring Tour 2022 includes the following dates:
April 28: Settle, Victoria Hall April 29: Carlisle, The Old Fire Station April 30: Bishop Auckland, Northern Kin Festival May 1: Bury, The Met May 2: Lowdham, Village Hall May 6: Hertford, St Andrews Church May 7: Stowmarket, The John Peel Centre May 8: Cromer, Folk on the Pier May 9: Nettlebed, Village Club May 10: Loughborough, Town Hall May 11: Scunthorpe, The Plowright Theatre May 12: Bridlington, Spa Centre Theatre May 13: Stockton on Tees, ARC May 15: Nantwich, Nantwich Civic Hall May 18: Walsall, Arena May 19: Stamford, Corn Exchange May 20: Malton, The Milton Rooms May 21: Castleton, Peak Cavern May, 22: Burton upon Trent, Brewhouse Arts Centre May 24: Leeds, City Varieties Music Hall May 25: Leek, The Foxlowe Arts Centre May 26: Tenbury Wells, The Regal May 27: Milford Haven, The Torch Theatre May 28: Pentyrch, Acapela Studio May 29: Chipping Norton, The Theatre May 31: Canterbury, Malthouse Theatre June 1: Emsworth, St James’ Church June 2: Hailsham, The Pavilion June 3: Cranbrook, St Dunstan’s Church June 4: Beckenham, The Arts at St Georges June 5: East Hagbourne, Fleur De Lys.

At The Barrier
Live music, reviews and opinion / est. 2018, fairport convention announce autumn 2023 tour dates: news.
Cropredy is just around the corner, and already the good ship Fairport has its sights set on new horizons as an extensive 25-date autumn tour is announced.
Fairport Convention must surely be one of the hardest-working bands in existence. Fairport’s Cropredy Convention – our favourite event in the year’s musical calendar is just around the corner – less that three weeks to go… – yet already the plans for the next bash around this island of ours are in place. Fairport’s autumn tour kicks off at Lowdham Village Hall on Friday 6th October and will visit 25 venues across England, Scotland and Wales before winding up at The Twickenham Exchange on Saturday 4th November.
Indeed, 2023 is turning into a super-busy year for the folk-rock legends. Throughout February and March, the chaps took to the highways and byways with the great DM tagging along with his drumkit and the wonderful Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage in support for the annual Winter Tour, before they headed off to the warmer climes of Ibiza and France for a programme of festival and cruise ship appearances – and all that’s before we even start to think about Cropredy…
Of course, they love it as much as we love them – as vocalist/guitarist Simon Nicol readily acknowledges: “As ever, the excitement steadily grows as Cropredy weekend looms larger in the calendar – without doubt it is the personal highlight of the year For each of us in the band as well as for many of the regular attendees [and that definitely applies to the At The Barrier team…] Who will deliver the greatest surprise? Whose performance will live longest in the memory? Will there be an actual ‘you had to be there…’ moment?
All the build-up and then suddenly the moment is gone and we have another twelve months to wait – but the batteries have been recharged and the level of love for all things Fairport is polished like the trophy it is.
When October comes round, we’ll be regrouping and returning to our natural home – the van on a motorway somewhere, back on the road and touring our music on smaller stages around the country, revisiting favourites and making new ones, seeing old friends and eating and drinking in our favourite watering holes: returning in a small way the love people bring from their home towns to the Brigadoon which is the Festival site of Cropredy. We hope you can come and join the fun and enjoy the songs old and new.”
Well – I can promise one thing: At The Barrier will be popping along to several of the shows as the tour makes its way up, down and across the land. Be sure to check these pages for our news and views!

But, before we get to autumn – there’s still Cropredy to enjoy. It’s now just a matter of days before we’ll all be meeting up again in THAT field at Home Farm, and this year’s show promises to be a doozie. This year’s bill might just be the most eclectic yet, with the disco magic of Nile Rodgers and Chic to illuminate our Thursday night, a huge dose of sleek 70s pop from 10cc on Friday, a chance to Get Down, Get Down, Get Down with Gilbert O’Sullivan on Saturday, as well as the last ever (allegedly) show from Strawbs; Ziggy goes to Kingston, courtesy of Easy Star All-Stars, there’ll be a generous serving of Sunday lunch from Toyah and Robert Fripp and a glorious array of Cropredy debutants , including first-ever appearances from At The Barrier favourites Merry Hell and The Young ‘Uns.
Oh – and don’t forget Fairport – there sure to kick up a storm with their bill-topping Saturday evening appearance. DM will be back behind the kit to add his own special brand of controlled explosives to the evening’s proceedings, and I have just an inkling that the band may have one or two pleasant surprises up their collective sleeve… we’ll soon find out.
Tickets for Fairport’s Cropredy Convention 2023 are selling fast, so if you haven’t got yours yet, we strongly advise you to act now – you can reach the Cropredy ticket desk via this link .

Preview: Fairport Convention announce Autumn 2023 UK Tour, celebrating 56 years of British folk rock
We do tend to view some bands as Americana alumni royalty here in AUK Towers, so it’s a delight to announce that following their return to the fields of Oxfordshire for their Cropredy Convention in August, legendary British folk rockers Fairport Convention are touring around the UK over the autumn. Starting in Lowdham’s The Village Hall this coming Friday, October 6th, the nationwide jaunt will take in 25 dates across England, Scotland and Wales, before winding up at The Exchange in Twickenham on Saturday 4th November, and some dates are already sold out. This follows an already packed year of shows – including the band’s Winter Tour earlier in the year, in the company of celebrated former-drummer Dave Mattacks – plus forays to both France and Ibiza, as well as a handful of summer warm-up dates.
The band’s Simon Nicol commented: “As ever, the excitement steadily grows as Cropredy weekend looms larger in the calendar: without doubt it is the personal highlight of the year for each of us in the band as well as for many of the regular attendees. Who will deliver the greatest surprise? Whose performance will live longest in the memory? Will there be an actual “you had to be there….” moment? All the build up and then suddenly the moment is gone and we have another twelve months to wait – but the batteries have been recharged and the level of love for all things Fairport is polished like the trophy it is. When October comes round, we’ll be regrouping and returning to our natural home – the van on a motorway somewhere, back on the road and touring our music on smaller stages around the country, revisiting favourites and making new ones, seeing old friends and eating and drinking in favourite watering holes: returning in a small way the love people bring from their home towns to the Brigadoon which is the Festival site of Cropredy. We hope you can come and join the fun and enjoy the songs old and new.”
With more than half a century’s back catalogue to choose from, fans can expect to hear long-established Fairport favourites, surprises from albums old and new, and maybe even the odd unexpected cover.

Fairport Convention Autumn 2023 UK Tour, Celebrating 56 Years of British Folk Rock
Jul 24, 2023
Fairport Convention has been making great music for over 56 years. Credited with originating British folk-rock music, the band has been through many changes but the current members retain a passion for live performance.
Ahead of the band’s return to the fields of Oxfordshire for their Cropredy Convention this August, legendary British folk rockers Fairport Convention have announced dates for their extended Autumn 2023 UK Tour…
Starting in Lowdham’s The Village Hall on Friday, October 6th , the nationwide jaunt will take in 25 dates across England, Scotland and Wales, before winding up at The Exchange in Twickenham on Saturday 4th November . This follows an already packed year of shows – including the band’s Winter Tour earlier in the year, in the company of celebrated former-drummer Dave Mattacks – plus forays to both France and Ibiza, as well as a handful of summer warm-up dates.

2023 will see the band that pioneered the UK Folk Rock sound celebrate 56 years in business, and whilst Fairport Convention has seen many changes in that time, one thing has remained the same – their passion for performance.
With more than half a century’s back catalogue to choose from, fans can expect to hear long-established Fairport favourites, surprises from albums old and new, and maybe even the odd unexpected cover.
“They’re a band still in control of their material, and, more important, still having fun with it.” The Times, 2023

Fairport Convention have been entertaining music lovers for over half a century, having formed in 1967. During that time the band that launched British folk-rock has seen many changes, but one thing has remained the same – Fairport’s passion for performance.
This year’s Winter Tour will present a mix of long-established Fairport favourites and some surprises from albums old and new.
Fairport Convention have won a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and Radio 2 listeners voted their ground-breaking album Liege & Lief ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’. Their story has been celebrated with television documentaries on BBC Four and Sky Arts.
The band features founding member Simon Nicol on guitar and vocals, Dave Pegg on bass guitar, Ric Sanders on violin, Chris Leslie on fiddle, mandolin and vocals. Fairport will be joined on stage by former member Dave Mattacks on Drums.
The opening act on the Tour will be the wonderful Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage.

A wonderful concert by superb musicians. A fantastic venue, a totally enjoyable experience.
These guys have honed there skills to such a high level, a special night to watch masters at work.
Great banter with the audience too, some of them could have careers as stand up comedians!!!

Fairport Convention - getting better with age!
Lowdham Village Hall, Friday 10 May 2019
Playing a mixed and varied selection of both very old through to very new, they never fail to disappoint.
Old songs were met with rapturous recognition, new songs with quieter appreciation but loud applause.
The obvious humour of Dave and Ric, the dry-humoured comments of Simon Nicol, the virtuoso performances of Chris on multiple instruments (is there nothing he can't play?) and the incredible beat machine that is Gerry complemented great musicianship and beautiful harmonies, both vocal and instrumental.
In particular, the violin duettes between Ric and Chris were absolutely stunning.
Enjoyed by one and all in a convivial relaxed environment, this yearly Warthog production is never to be missed, and certainly didn't disappoint this year!
It’s often incredible to consider how just the name of one artist, alone - in this case, it’s Fairport Convention - can be completely synonymous with a certain genre of music, even if it’s a broad one; sure, Fairport Convention were indeed at the forefront of the British folk movement, but the truth is, the sound that they cultivated way back in the sixties is really iconic enough that their name is enough to have the word ‘folk’ in mind straight away; they’re one of the genre’s great unifiers, in that respect. Their work ethic is something that’s frankly awesome to behold; they formed in 1967, and by the time they released their seminal album Liege and Lief two years later, they were already four albums down. They continued to write and record at a similar pace until the late seventies, eventually dissolving in 1979, but after reforming in the mid-eighties, they continue to play to their devoted fanbase today, with original members Dave Pegg and Simon Nicol still involved and playing shows across the UK on a regular basis, playing new cuts and old classics to crowds that continue to include a younger faction who are just being turned on to the band’s genre-defining catalogue.

Dave Mattacks on playing with Fairport Convention for Winter 2023 UK Tour
Following another successful Cropredy Convention in August, Fairport Convention have announced dates for their Winter 2023 UK Tour , with a very special guest appearing on the drummer’s stool. Dave Mattacks talks to Jason Barnard about picking up his drumsticks for Fairport next year.
Hi Dave, when was the last time you played with Fairport?
I played with “FC” at Dave Pegg’s 75th birthday celebration concert just outside Birmingham in early November – that was a wonderful evening. I also played with them at Cropredy in ’22. The last few years as a guest at the band’s festival have been thoroughly enjoyable – and I was flattered to be asked to do their 2023 February – March UK tour.
What Fairport songs are the most challenging to play?
They’re all challenging in their own way. One aspect I’m particularly looking forward to on the forthcoming tour is playing the “new-to-me“ material – i.e; the songs & tunes that have accumulated in the band’s repertoire over the last twenty or so years.
You joined Fairport at a difficult time to record ‘Liege & Lief’. Given you were relatively new to the studio, did you feel any pressure?
I don’t recall feeling pressure, but I truly was the “deer-in-the-headlights“ from an aesthetic point of view. At that time, I had no knowledge of that musical arena – I just kept my head down and tried to do my best.
Did your drumming style evolve in those first years ?
Very much so. The band gently ‘educated’ me. They taught me to appreciate music in a different way that had more to do with a deeper appreciation of content and to be less impressed by ‘flash’.
When did you first start playing?
I started on piano aged 6, but switched to a kit when I was 14 or so. I made the mistake of thinking drums would be easier! My early ‘drum heroes’ included Tony Meehan, Kenny Clare, Buddy Rich and of course, Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts.
What are your recollections of recording XTC’s ‘Nonsuch’?
All very positive. It was a good team – the band, engineer Barry Hammond and producer Gus Dudgeon. Plus, you really can’t go wrong with songs as great as those – “Nonsuch“ is definitely a “career highlight“.
What is it like collaborating with Richard Thompson – was ‘Mock Tudor’ a highpoint?
It’s always a joy to work with Richard. Yes, ‘Mock Tudor’ is a favourite – but all his albums are outstanding in my humble opinion.
You have played more blues music since moving to Massachusetts – can you tell me more about that?
It’s not so much “playing more blues ” – more a case of getting the opportunity to be subjected and exposed to different styles of music on a more intense level. And that wasn’t really happening for me in the UK. In parallel, I felt I needed to get more ‘grease’ and looseness into my playing – it seemed too stiff to me back then. I’m still working on it.
Which of the five Paul McCartney albums that you have featured on is your highlight?
All five are special to me. Certainly, getting to record in Montserrat at George Martin’s studio was a highlight. Those tracks ended up on ‘Pipes of Peace’ & ’Tug of War’. The Abbey Road (studio two) sessions for ‘Run Devil Run’ were cool too.
What are the current projects that you’re involved in?
Basically, I’m playing a lot of ‘live’ dates of all shapes and sizes with different people here in New England and beyond. I’m recording with songwriter / singers / artists in different studios. I produce (I should mention I’m particularly pleased about my collaboration with Debra Cowan). I do drum clinics – and have a few students. I’m also a member of “Feast of Fiddles” – that band tours the UK every spring. Apart from that see also davemattacks.com

I always loved Dave’s work. Absolutely beautiful. Very heavy and powerful and endlessly surprising and inventive. Sadly, I’ve never seen him live. I also never knew he has been living in Mass. for awhile where I live and in lieu of that I would appreciate it if someone could help me find out about any gigs in New England he’ll be playing sometime. Thank You.
My email is [email protected] . thank you. Gary Morneault
Is Dave playing in New England sometime soon? It’s OK to show my email regarding this question
