Discovering the Role of a Med Surg Tech in Healthcare

Role of a Med Surg Tech

You’ve probably heard of them before — medical surgical technologists, sometimes called operating room technicians, med surg techs, surgical techs, surgical assistants, or scrub techs — these healthcare heroes have many names.

They’re the healthcare professionals in and out of the operating room (OR) all day long, the hard workers who prep the OR to ensure patient safety, and those patient individuals who act as a surgeon’s “third hand.” Let's learn more, from their role to the average salary for surgical tech professionals, plus everything in between.

What is the role of a med surg tech?

Perks of being an or tech.

There’s a good chance you already know who surgical technicians (STs) are — you just may not realize it. Have you ever thought about who cleans and sterilizes surgical equipment? Or, have you wondered who preps patients for surgery or who gets them to recovery? You’re thinking of STs.

A certified surgical technologist plays an integral role at healthcare facilities. Unlike most other healthcare careers, med surg techs are involved in every step of surgical procedures — preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative.

Preop, or before surgery, med surg techs are responsible for all the prep work for both the patient and the operating room team. As the first person to enter the OR, med surg techs have the task of creating and maintaining the room’s sterile field to help make surgery safer for everyone. They also gather the necessary equipment and tools to sterilize, count, and carefully arrange them for the surgeon.

As for surgical patient preparation, surgical technologists prepare and get them ready by shaving their incision spot, positioning the patient on the operating table, disinfecting their incision site, and draping the patient. Once the OR and the patient have been fully prepped, surgery can begin.

“When it comes to surgery, the ST is an expert,” said Allen. “We’re expected to know everything—the anatomy and physiology of the body, how the procedure is to be performed, and multiple different variations of the procedure.”

The most time-consuming role of surgical techs comes intraoperatively. No matter what type of surgery it is, surgical technologists assist and become the “third hand” to the lead surgeon and first assistant. There to provide a helping hand, med surg techs offer sterile surgical tools to the surgeon as requested, prepare medications and administer to patient, plus keep track of surgical instruments used during the procedure.

“The most two important skills for any ST to demonstrate is the ability to remain calm under pressure,” said Allen. “And to anticipate the surgeon’s needs before he or she even knows what’s next.”

Once the procedure is complete, OR techs suture the patient’s incision and apply disinfected dressing to the area. These skilled healthcare professionals then count the tools used during the surgery, dispose of waste, and get the patient to the recovery ward.

Med surg techs are a crucial member of a surgical team. As such, they must have the physical ability to be on their feet for long periods at a time, as well as the mental capacity to cope with the hectic demand of the operating room.

“Working in the operating room can be challenging,” Allen shared. “Learn from your mistakes and work harder the next time.”

Life as an OR tech is a career where you know you make a positive impact in countless lives. From patients to surgeons and other hospital workers, med surg techs offer support to everyone they touch throughout the healthcare journey.

“You’ll come across amazing success stories about how a patient recovered due to a procedure you helped make possible,” said surgical tech, Anthony Mareno, to Rasmussen University. “You’ll feel as though you were a part of the team that changed a patient’s life forever, and that’s because you were!”

Professional growth

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the surgical assisting profession is expected to grow 7% from 2019 to 2029. Part of this job outlook growth is due to aging baby boomers. Another reason is due to advanced technologies that make surgeries safer. This demand also ensures that the average surgical tech salary will be competitive. Plus, as a traveler you'll have the opportunity to earn a higher hourly wage that your perm staff counterparts.

No day is the same

Every day as a med surg tech brings changes, from new patients to new robotic surgical equipment and surgeries to learn. A surgical tech wrote : “My job is never mundane . Each day brings a new patient and unique challenges to the table.”

Part of a healthcare team

As a surgical technician, you work alongside surgeons, registered nurses, anesthesiologists, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team in hospital or outpatient care centers to ensure patient health during surgical operations.

Less intense education requirements

Unlike a surgeon who requires years of additional education after college to perform a surgical procedure, med surg technicians require an associate’s degree, diploma, or certificate in surgical technology from a surgical technology program that’s accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Depending on the facility, OR techs need six months to two years of experience in operating rooms before they can hit the road as a professional traveler.

Flexible work schedule

After time as a professional surgical tech, you have the power to choose your ideal schedule. As a healthcare traveler, you also have the freedom to decide where your next assignment will take you.

“Have fun and be open to learning every day,” said Allen. “This is such a great career with so many growth opportunities. Never give up and strive for more.”

As the demand and average annual salary for experienced surgical techs continues to climb, Fusion Medical Staffing removes common barriers for healthcare travelers to promote a faster turnaround time with job application submissions and healthcare traveler placements to get you where you’re supposed to be in less time.

RocketStar Inc's Breakthrough in Space Travel: The Nuclear Fusion Drive

I n the realm of space exploration and satellite deployment, propulsion technology is the linchpin to achieving ever-greater milestones. Imagine a spacecraft that harnesses the power of nuclear fusion, an energy source that mimics the processes powering our own sun, to journey through the cosmos. This isn’t a scene from a science fiction novel; it’s the current breakthrough from RocketStar Inc. with their unveiling of the FireStar Drive—the world’s first electric propulsion system bolstered by nuclear fusion.

RocketStar’s technological marvel, the FireStar Drive, marks a significant advance from traditional chemical and electric propulsion methods. By employing a fusion-enhanced pulsed plasma thruster that ionizes water vapor to generate high-speed protons, which then induce fusion reactions with boron nuclei, this system can increase the base propulsion unit’s thrust by an impressive 50%. The fusion process, likened to an afterburner in a jet engine, injects boron into the thruster’s exhaust, creating a fusion-fission reaction that supercharges the engine’s capabilities.

The genesis of this innovation was a collaborative project for AFWERX—an Air Force Work Project—during which the concept of introducing boronated water into a pulsed plasma thruster’s exhaust was first realized. Not only did this produce alpha particles and gamma rays—indicators of nuclear fusion—but subsequent testing at Georgia Tech’s High Power Electric Propulsion Laboratory showcased a significant performance boost, confirming the potential of this groundbreaking propulsion technology.

Adam Hecht, Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of New Mexico, highlighted the paradigm shift this represents: “RocketStar has not just incrementally improved a propulsion system, but taken a leap forward by applying a novel concept, creating a fusion-fission reaction in the exhaust.”

This propulsion system is not a distant possibility—it’s swiftly approaching operational status. RocketStar is already prepping the M1.5 thruster, the current iteration of their technology, for in-space performance evaluation aboard D-Orbit’s OTV ION Satellite Carrier on SpaceX Transporter missions in July and October this year.

“The M1.5 is not just a step toward the future—it’s a giant leap,” said Matteo Lorenzoni, Head of Sales at D-Orbit. “We are very happy to have the opportunity to work alongside RocketStar and contribute to the demonstration of the M1.5. We just integrated the thruster onto the ION Satellite Carrier, and look forward to witnessing its performance in orbit.”

Additionally, February 2025 will see an in-space demonstration of the FireStar Drive as a hosted payload on Rogue Space System’s Barry-2 spacecraft. Brent Abbott, CRO at Rogue Space Systems, stated, “We are very excited to test FireStar for RocketStar. We look forward to considering it for future Rogue missions.”

RocketStar is not stopping at propulsion. Their ambitious vision encompasses a suite of cutting-edge technologies, from aerospike rocket engines to digital signal processing (DSP) systems that enable advanced space communications and radar capabilities.

As space agencies and commercial entities push further into the final frontier, RocketStar’s FireStar Drive promises to be a key component in overcoming the challenges of deep space travel. Its inception, sparked by a simple conference doodle and nurtured through innovative collaboration, is now set to propel the industry forward, reminding us that sometimes, the most profound advancements start with the simplest ideas.

Moscow is testing FLYING taxis (PHOTOS + VIDEOS)

fusion travel surgical tech

In January 2021, ‘Hoversurf’, a Russian urban air mobility company, started testing its Hover drone taxi, a flying vehicle that can transport passengers and cargo, ‘Popular Mechanics’ magazine reports .

fusion travel surgical tech

The drone taxi is the size of a standard sedan car (5 m x 1.6 m), says TASS news agency, citing the press service of the Moscow city Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Development.

It can reach an altitude of 150 meters and cover a distance of up to 100 kilometers in one go. The drone taxi does not require the construction of special runways, as it can land on an ordinary parking lot and is also capable of maneuvering onto a parking lot and flying into a garage. It will be able to carry two people or up to 300 kilograms of cargo and to develop a speed of up to 200 km/h (124 mph).

fusion travel surgical tech

The drone taxi is currently being tested at an indoor arena of the Luzhniki Stadium. For the time being, the prototype is testing the ‘Lift & Cruise’ flight mode, whereby the take-off, landing and horizontal flight are taken care of by different groups of engines and is trialling a parachute system to be used in emergencies.

fusion travel surgical tech

Inventor and businessman Alex Atamanov, the founder of Hoversurf, began developing the drone taxi in 2018. In addition to this project, Hoversurf has a hoverbike project, which Atamanov presented in 2016.

Hoverbike

The hoverbike can fly for up to 40 minutes and reach a maximum speed of 96 km/h (59 mph). After its public testing at the ‘Startup Village’ conference in Skolkovo, the company received 3,500 pre-orders for its hoverbike. For the time being, the hoverbikes are sold one at a time, with each one taking a month to assemble, Atamanov said in an interview with Vc.ru in 2019.

The Hover Taxi now has more chances of entering mass production, Atamanov told the Popular Mechanics magazine. He said that by the spring of 2021, the Moscow City government has plans to build a new platform at Skolkovo for testing the drone: it will have a 5G signal and will make it possible to improve the drone’s AI-based control system, which maps routes, operates the drone and ensures flight safety.

fusion travel surgical tech

Hoversurf expects to be able to produce the first production models of its drone taxi in 2021. However, they will not be able to enter mass use until 2023-2025, when Russia gets a 5G network and adopts a law allowing the use of drones like these on the country’s territory.
