15 Best Things to Do in Gary (IN)

OK, so Gary, Indiana might not be in many people’s travel plans, unless they’re coming to pay homage to Michael Jackson at his childhood home.

Gary was hit hard by the collapse of its once prosperous steel industry, and has hemorrhaged residents since the 1970s, in true Rust Belt style. And yet the potential is obvious, especially on warm summer days.

The best beaches in the Chicago metropolitan area can be found on this part of the South Shore, with stirring panoramas looking back to the Chicago skyline and natural splendor showcased by a national park.

1. Indiana Dunes National Park

Indiana Dunes National Park, Gary

Touching the east side of downtown Gary is a national park encompassing around 20 miles of lakefront and more than 15,000 acres.

As well as dunes, there’s a wealth of other habitats within these boundaries, including endless beaches, oak savannas, bogs, swamps, prairie, rivers and forests.

You can check out 11 different trails, adding up to 50 miles, to encounter these environments. One, the Dune Succession Trail, explaining how the sandy peaks are colonized by plants.

There’s history too in the Indiana Dunes, at the Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm, giving a glimpse of the South Shore’s settlement history going back to the 1820s.

The broad, golden sandy beaches are a big draw, for swimming and sunbathing in summer, and spotting shorebirds during the spring and fall migrations. If you’d like to stay overnight, the Dunewood Campground is open April through October.

2. Marquette Park

Marquette Park

This 240-acre lakefront park is surrounded by the Indiana Dunes National Park, and contains beaches, lofty dunes, a lagoon, wetlands, native oak savanna and ponds. Marquette Park fronts the Miller Beach neighborhood, which until 1918 was a separate city from Gary.

The lakefront here has been a beloved recreation spot going back to the last decades of the 19th century, and there’s a pair of stunning early 20th-century monuments in the park, in the form of the Aquatorium (1921) and the Pavilion (1924).

After a long period of decline both of these buildings have been restored, as part of a $28 million redevelopment plan.

This is a fabulous place to enjoy Gary’s lakefront nature, relax on the sandy beach and, on a clear day, look across to the Chicago skyline.

3. Gary Bathing Beach Aquatorium

Gary Bathing Beach Aquatorium

One sight that will grab you at Marquette Park is this historic shower, bathroom and changing facility, completed in 1921.

On the National Register of Historic Places since 1994, the Aquatorium is important as an early example of precast concrete modular construction, essentially composed of just six basic cast blocks.

In a story echoed around Gary, the structure fell into disrepair later in the century and was boarded up.

Happily though, the Aquatorium was saved from demolition in the early 1990s and restored at the turn of the new millennium.

Now, the building is used for events and houses an aviation museum. This celebrates Octave Chanute (1832-1910), whose glider experiments in the dunes here in the 1890s helped pave the way for the Wright brothers’ first powered flight a few years later.

The museum is also dedicated to the Tuskegee Airmen, the trailblazing group of mainly African American military pilots and airmen who served in World War II.

4. Lake Street Beach

Lake Street Beach

Slightly west of Marquette Park is another spot where you can admire the full beauty of the South Shore lakefront.

If you’re accustomed to the Lake Michigan beaches in the Chicago area, you’ll quickly see why Gary is on another level. Lake Street Beach is a cinematic, clean sweep of golden sand, wide enough to give everyone some space, and edged by more dunes.

There’s a boat launch here in the summer season, and a bike trail links this beach with Marquette Park and the rest of the Indiana Dunes National Park.

The beach is well served by parking, but if you’re coming from the Miller South Shore Line station there’s a beautiful walk through the Miller Woods unit of the national park.

5. The Jackson Family Home

Jackson Family Home

It’s impossible to overestimate the impact that the Jackson family has made on popular culture, and in Gary you can make a detour to the home where it all began.

2300 Jackson Street was the modest two-bedroom home of Katherine and Joe Jackson. Katherine had a job at Sears and played the clarinet and piano, while Joe was a crane operator and guitarist in a rhythm and blues band.

The couple raised ten children here, half of whom would become The Jackson 5 in 1964, founded and managed with an iron rod by Joe.

The eighth child was Michael Jackson (1958-2009) who set the bar for pop stardom over nearly five decades. The house is a private residence, but is understandably a mecca for fans, and is pointed out on road signs in Gary.

6. Dune Succession Trail

Dune Succession Trail

Away from the lakefront in the national park’s West Beach Unit is a mile-long educational trail that gives you a fascinating look at the various stages of dune development.

“Dune succession” refers to the process of dunes becoming colonized by plants. You’ll embark on a rollercoaster walk over the top of tall dunes, coated with grasses, scrub, pines, black oaks, basswoods and ashes, and then down past interdunal ponds.

The first section of the trail requires a taxing walk across loose sand, but things get easier once you reach the boardwalk.

At this point there’s a stairway, where if you turn around you’ll get another majestic view of the lake and Chicago skyline in the distance.

You can pick up a leaflet about the walk, with corresponding signs along the trail telling you what to look out for.

7. Gary SouthShore RailCats

Baseball

Gary has a professional baseball team, one of 12 franchises playing in the American Association of Professional Baseball, a Partner League of Major League Baseball.

The SouthShore RailCats were founded in 2001 and are perennially competitive. At the time of writing they had achieved six 1st or 2nd place finishes in the league’s North Division over the last decade.

Home field is the 6,139-capacity U.S. Steel Yard, opened in 2002 and also hosting local little league and high school games.

This was the scene for a memorial service for Michael Jackson in 2009, attended by 6,000 people, including much of the Jackson family.

RailCats games are family events, with all kinds of promotions and giveaways, raucous between-innings entertainment and dazzling fireworks.

8. Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center

Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center

Established by the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department, Bellaboo’s Play and Discovery Center sparks children’s creativity and social and cognitive development through play.

There are nine subtly educational settings, all highly interactive and tactile, full of things that can be moved and handled.

A few environments include a supermarket, pizza parlor, construction zone, water tables, an art studio, dinosaur dig and performance area.

Elsewhere, kids can ride a pedal cart, dress-up, try cooking, explore the garden, climb a “tree-pee” and build with blocks, all in a safe, open-ended environment.

The center has a cafe with seating for 180, surrounded by the play areas, as well as five birthday party rooms and a space just for infants and toddlers.

9. Marquette Park Pavilion

Marquette Park Pavilion

The other arresting sight in Marquette Park is the pavilion, opened in 1924 and constructed by Max & Sons, the same firm that built the Palace Theater in downtown Gary.

The refined Marquette Park Pavilion was designed by prolific Chicago area architect George W. Maher (1864-1926), and mixes Prairie School and Renaissance Revival styles.

Despite several renovations, the most recent in the 2010s, this building is still eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and shines as an accessible events venue for everything from weddings to civic functions.

10. Abandoned Buildings

Abandoned City Methodist Church

Now, while Gary’s current population is around 70,000, this is a decline of 110,000 from the city’s peak in the 1960s. The upshot is a lot of abandoned buildings.

It is estimated that around one third of all the houses in Gary are empty, and the total of derelict structures may be as high as 13,000.

While not everyone’s idea of a good time, this decay does kindle a certain fascination, and it’s easy to see why urban explorers, street artists and photographers are drawn to Gary.

In the downtown area, a few imposing abandoned monuments on the National Register of Historic Places are the Union Station (1910), the Palace Theater (1925) and the City Methodist Church (1925).

As ever, Gary’s dilapidated buildings are best viewed from the outside as many are hazardous and structurally unsound.

11. Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education

Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education

In the Miller Woods unit of the Indiana Dunes National Park you’ll come across this facility offering an introduction to the park’s diverse habitats and natural history.

The Paul H. Douglas Center is in a gorgeous spot, with water on two sides, and with trails leading north to the lakefront or east to the national park’s other units.

Inside are informative exhibits about the dune, oak savanna, swale and wetland ecosystems all around, as well as terrariums with live animals like turtles and snakes.

Along with trail access, there’s a nature play zone outside. Keep an eye on the center’s schedule for ranger-guided hikes, lectures and many more activities in the national park.

12. Erin’s Farm

Goat

There’s a non-profit animal sanctuary and rescue center just south of Gary in Hobart. As well as giving a long-term home to animals from abusive or negligent environments, Erin’s Farm has an educational vocation, teaching children and grownups about appropriate and ethical animal husbandry.

Visiting Erin’s Farm, which is on 33 acres, there’s plenty of opportunity to interact with the residents, which include pigs, goats, cows, chickens, rabbits, cats, sheep, horses and some exotic animals like a cockatoo and a Patagonian mara.

One or two-hour farm tours are available for a small fee, or you can check the farm’s facebook page for details of an upcoming open day.

13. Southlake Mall

Shopping

For a shopping trip, your best bet is to head south of Gary, and in a few short minutes you’ll come to the only mall of its kind in Northwest Indiana.

Owned by the Westlake group, Southlake Mall opened in 1974 and has around 150 stores and service businesses.

A run down of the many household names here includes Macy’s, Foot Locker, H&M, Victoria’s Secret, Lids, Hot Topic and Claire’s.

For dining and snacks there’s a slew of food court favorites like Sbarro, Auntie Anne’s and Mandarin Express.

Another reason to make the trip is for the 12-screen AMC Classic movie theater, on the lot, just next to the main building.

14. Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana

Casino

The South Shore is a major gaming destination, with casinos in Hammond, East Chicago and right here in Gary.

For some 25 years the local gaming license was held by the Majestic Star Casino, two riverboats in Buffington Harbor.

In 2021 these shut down and the license was switched to the brand new Hard Rock Casino, a few miles inland, just off Interstate 94. High rollers and laid-back gamers will be pleased with the massive casino floor, which has 1,800 slot machines and table games.

For the latter you’ve got more than 80 different tables, with poker, blackjack, craps, roulette and much more.

There are five dining establishments here, including a Hard Rock Cafe, as well as two bars and a packed program of live entertainment.

15. County Line Orchard

County Line Orchard

For a day out in fall, this farm a short way away in Hobart has plenty going on in September and October.

Across many acres, County Line Orchard grows more than 30 apple varieties, from Gala to Pink Lady, each coming into season for U-Pick or to be purchased from the farm store. The orchard’s website has a guide to tell you what’s in season.

On top of that there’s a pumpkin patch, impressive bee yurts, U-Pick sunflowers, a corn maze, barrel rides and a petting farm with pygmy goats and little pigs.

There’s live music, mostly on weekends throughout the fall, and you can pop into the bakery for seasonal treats like apple cinnamon donuts and pumpkin pie.

See the City Steel Built

While Gary has lost many of its early twentieth-century landmarks, the city retains many handsome structures from the building boom that accompanied the swift development of the steel industry. This summer, Gary’s department of redevelopment will host tours of the historic downtown that invite participants to learn Gary’s story, hear about historic preservation’s role in its resurgence, and help to reimagine the city as a vibrant, walkable environment.

Historic downtown Gary stretches from the gates of U.S. Steel on the shore of Lake Michigan to 9th Avenue. From its founding in 1906, the city saw steady commercial development into the 1930s. Notable landmarks of the period include Gary City Hall, Lake Superior Courthouse, City Methodist Church and the Knights of Columbus Building, all still standing. The downtown won listing as a district in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Take the tour to see these sites and other downtown landmarks previously inaccessible by the public. Tour dates and specific sites will be announced in the spring.

In addition to the summer tours, Gary is partnering with the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA), to preserve a number of Gary historic sites. IHCDA has issued a challenge grant to the city of Gary to help secure City Methodist Church and the former U.S. Post Office, as well as increase promotion of the downtown.

Post-tribune | the jacksons return to hometown of gary for feb. 18 hard rock show.

Author

Members of The Jacksons, Indiana’s first family of music, will play for a hometown crowd at a one-night-only show.

Marlon, Tito and Jackie Jackson kick off of their 2022 international tour with a show Feb. 18 at Hard Rock Live, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana’s new performance venue. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

Jermaine and Michael Jackson were also members of the original Jackson 5. Michael Jackson died in 2009. Jermaine Jackson now lives in the Middle East and only performs with the Jacksons occasionally, according to Hard Rock Casino Northwest Indiana spokesperson Pat Kremer.

The Jacksons were a part of the venue’s grand opening in May 2021 but have not performed in their hometown in several decades.

Some of the songs fans will hear include “ABC,” “I’ll Be There,” “Can You Feel It” and “Blame It on the Boogie.”

Originally known as the Jackson 5 and later The Jacksons, they are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Inside the Hard Rock Live venue lobby is a tribute to the Jacksons, with each family member represented with personal artifacts and stories about their time inside their childhood home at 2300 Jackson Street.

Other nods to the Jacksons can be found throughout the property, including the 37-foot-tall guitar marquee at the entrance modeled after Joseph Jackson’s guitar, outfits worn on stage, Michael Jackson’s famous glove and the red leather jacket he wore in the “Beat It” video.

For a full Jackson experience, fans should visit the casino’s Hard Rock Café and order “The Triumph,” a chicken sandwich created exclusively for the location by Marlon, Tito, Jackie and Jermaine Jackson.

Tito Jackson, 68, lived in Gary until he was 14 and has fond memories of his hometown.

“It’s always exciting to come home and perform for — basically ex-neighbors from childhood,” he said. “Most of my childhood was in Gary, Indiana. That’s where I’m from. I was born there and raised there.”

The Jacksons’ career started in Gary and Chicago, he said. They performed with acts like The Chi-Lites, The Five Stairsteps, Jackie Wilson and Etta James.

“We played the Apollo once and after that we had the choice to do ‘The Dick Cavett Show’ or go audition for Berry Gordy,” Tito Jackson said. “We chose the Berry Gordy route. That was in 1968. In 1969, Motown moved to California and we moved with them. That’s when ‘I Want You Back’ came out.”

“I Want You Back” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Jackson 5 made music history when four debut singles all reached No. 1 and sold more than 200 million records. In 1976, the group left Motown for Epic Records and changed their name to The Jacksons.

Marlon Jackson, 64, lives in Georgia now. He’s excited about performing in Gary again.

“We’re definitely looking forward to that. It’s going to be cold, but we’re looking forward to it,” Marlon Jackson said.

He remembered performing in a talent show as a child in Gary as well as performing in clubs in Chicago before signing with Motown Records and moving away.

“We started singing with my mom, country western music because that’s what she liked,” Marlon Jackson said. “She told my father we could harmonize and he didn’t believe her. He listened to us and after that he was on it.”

The show at Hard Rock Live will be a walk down memory lane for fans, he said.

“You’re going to hear all the songs we made and we do one or two of Michael’s songs. And all the songs that the Jackson 5 Jacksons made — ‘I Want You Back,’ ‘Dancing Machine,’ ‘Enjoy Yourself,’ ‘Blame it on the Boogie,’ ‘Shake Your Body.’ All those songs. We have a lot of songs.”

They bring a full band along.

“We don’t believe in tracks. We’re old school,” Tito Jackson said.

“People seem to have a great time. Which is great,” Marlon Jackson said of the show.

He still enjoys making music with his brothers.

“We get to reminisce and have fun on stage,” Marlon Jackson said. “We talk about the good times. We feel (Michael’s) spirit onstage.”

Audiences should expect to have fun and reminisce along with the brothers, Marlon Jackson said.

“We want to thank the people for supporting us throughout the years because without them we wouldn’t be where we are today,” he said. “We don’t take it for granted. We really appreciate it.”

Tito Jackson recently released a solo blues/R&B album called “Under Your Spell” featuring music royalty, including Stevie Wonder, Marlon Jackson, Bobby Rush, George Benson, Joe Bonamassa, Claudette King and Kenny Neal.

“You’re going to hear all the hits The Jacksons have done over the years as well as some of the new music,” Tito Jackson said of the concert. “You’re going to hear a couple of my songs from my album. It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s like old friends getting back together and having one big party. I invited everyone to come out and party and jam with us. It’s going to be great.”

The concert is for adults age 21 and older.

In 1957, at the age of just 21, Buddy Guy left Louisiana for Chicago in search of the blues.

Born to sharecroppers in Lettsworth, Louisiana, not far from the Mississippi border, Guy worked on the farm.

While he channeled Guitar Slim in his frenetic, often distorted playing of the electric guitar, influencing everyone from Eric Clapton to Jimi Hendrix, Guy’s childhood home didn’t have electricity until he was about 12 years old.

Arriving in Chicago at 21 allowed him to enter the blues clubs, where he’d overcome his shyness thanks to encounters with luminaries like Muddy Waters, eventually recording with vaunted Chicago-based label Chess Records, where he struggled to breakout, continuing to hone his unique playing style.

By 1989, he established his current venue Buddy Guy’s Legends , heading north from 43rd Street to the city’s South Loop (moving it a block up Wabash to a new location in 2010).

In the midst of a farewell tour , a lengthy affair which takes him across North America into early September, including stops in New Hampshire and New York this weekend, Guy is finally pondering the idea of easing up on the travel — as he eyes his 88th birthday this July.

Following recent recording sessions in Nashville, Guy can be found holding court at Legends most nights when he’s not on tour, performing a residency each January at the club.

During his most recent January run, Legends live streamed the sold out engagements for the first time. Fans watched online as Guy, ever the showman, left the stage to mix it up with the crowd, performing outside on Wabash Avenue for passersby before hitting the bar for a quick drink en route back to the stage.

Joined by fellow bluesman Bobby Rush, 90, on opening night, Guy and his band wrapped up the residency alongside his daughter Carlise and the NuBlu Band, performing in front of fans from Brazil, Singapore and England who made the pilgrimage to the Chicago blues fixture.

Recently announced as the headlining act for Chicago Blues Fest this June, Guy is clear on what the city of Chicago means to him today.

“You know, that’s so special,” said Guy of performing again at Chicago Blues Fest. “This is the only free one throughout the world. I play ‘em all over the world. There’s no more,” he explained. “Even the birds got more sense than I got, man. A lot of them leave and go south when we get this kind of weather,” said the guitarist with a chuckle. “I looked at Muddy and Wolf. Little Walter from Louisiana. Bobby Rush is from Louisiana. I said, ‘Now if they’re here and they ain’t screaming about how cold it gets, what the hell am I worried about?’ I said, ‘I’m gonna stay here. Because I just love what I’m listening to.’”

I spoke with Buddy Guy about his current farewell tour, aging gracefully, life at Legends and his continual desire to learn. A transcript of our phone conversation, lightly edited for length and clarity, follows below.

Jim Ryan : Hi, Buddy. Good morning. How are you?

Buddy Guy : Well, I’m gonna tell you like I told some people in the club last night. If I tell you I’m OK, I’d be lying to you! (Laughs)

Ryan : Well, I’m sorry to hear that!

Guy : No, no. Before we get into it… In my younger days - in my teenage years through my 20s and 30s - I never hung out with nobody my age. Because I didn’t think they could teach me something. I always hung out with guys 20 and 30 years older than me. And they always used to look at me and say, “Boy, wait until you hit my age…”

But they’ve all passed away and I can’t thank them now! I’d like to thank them for telling me the truth!

Ryan : I’m 44. So, I’m about halfway to you… Are you telling me it’s gonna get worse?

Guy : You better enjoy it while you can, man!

I make a joke out of it. I don’t know how long you’ve kept a car, how old it got. But if you keep it a long time, it goes to rattling. You put a screw in to stop that rattling. But as soon as you turn the corner, another screw will pop out and you’ve got to put another one in. It just continues to keep on rattling.

Ryan : How was the January residency?

Guy : I started that because throughout my years when I didn’t have a name - I was just playing locally around here with mostly local guys - and every January, the weather would be so bad that if you did try to travel around in a little station wagon, it’d be snowing. And so I just said, “Well, I’m not gonna try to go on the road that month. I’ll just stay and play.” And, finally, I got a little club in 1972 called the Checkerboard. And I just said I would play the whole month there.

Now, people have gotten used to that. I have my crew that asks questions [on stage before shows] in my club. My club is one of the last surviving pretty good-sized blues clubs in the country - because most of them done collapsed. But it started around 40 or 50%. Would you believe now that my club, every night, and not even January - but every night my club is about 80 to 90% from outside Chicago. I can’t believe it. They were asking it last night. People from other states just flock in because you don’t have this kind of club that’s survived - even before COVID. Joliet is about, what, 40 miles from here? They used to have great clubs. Gary, Indiana used to have blues clubs. None of that survived. California is the same way. In New York, B.B. King’s club closed down. Long Island, all of them are gone now.

You have to take a taxi now - because you don’t hardly have any more all night public transportation. Chicago used to have a 24/7 stockyard and a 24/7 steel mill. And you could catch a bus at 1 AM. And it was full! So, you could go get you a couple of double shots and you didn’t have to drive! You could catch the bus home. That ain’t never coming back I don’t think.

My club is downtown near the hotels and I think that helps a bit.

Ryan : Well, you’ve toured relentlessly now for decades. What’s it like finally pulling back on the travel end of that a bit?

Guy : I keep telling young kids now - one was in my club last night - if you give up, you ain’t got a chance.

Do you know the worst snowstorm in Chicago was in 1967? Do you know what I was doing then? I was driving a tow truck and playing my guitar at night. That day, it snowed so bad that I couldn’t leave. I just slept in the tow truck and played my guitar for the three people in the club. I got up in the morning and went back to driving the tow truck and moving snow. Somebody said to me, “You ain’t nothing but a fool, man. You ain’t making no money with the guitar!” But I just loved what I was doing, man - and I didn’t quit.

I’ll be 88 years old this year. And I’m thinking about maybe just playing a few festivals after this year. Because your mind ain’t the same. You can’t remember like you used to. I’ve got some songs and I’m going in the studio this Wednesday. The late Tyrone Davis. Me and him, when he was still here, when he was still alive, we’d sit up and talk in the club till sunrise. He said, “Man, it used to be you could give me a song, and I could look at it twice and throw it away and I’d remember it all! Now I can keep it for six months and I can’t remember.” I remember B.B. King doing that in his last days of his life. He would sing the same song six or seven times a night. But his sidemen and all his staff was afraid to tell him. I’ve got my staff now and I say, “If I go to do that, just remind me.” Because your mind just ain’t what it was when you was in your 20s, 30s, 40s or 50s.

I want to go out in good style. I don’t want to disappoint somebody who done paid to see me. If I ain’t able to give them their money’s worth? Well, I’m thinking about that now while I’m in my right mind. I want to leave in good standing.

Ryan : Growing up in Louisiana, how important was the radio in terms of exposing you to different sounds and different stories at an early age?

Guy : First of all, it was a long time before my dad was able to get a radio. I know you ain’t old enough to know. A radio with a battery. He had to go up on top of the house and put a line like a clothesline from one end to the other. If it were cloudy, you couldn’t hear nothing but static. If it was raining, you couldn’t hear nothing but static.

So, my first blues was coming out of Tennessee. It was called Randy’s Record Shop. That’s when the Chess brothers started coming up with playing the blues. A 78 [RPM record] then, I think, was 79 cents or something like that. You could order it and they would mail it. Now that old 78, if you dropped it, it would crash. You had to be careful with those records back then! There were no 45s. It was just straight 78s.

The old record players… If you had one, you had to wind it up with the spring. I think my daddy finally got one electric line in the house. That was probably around 1947 or 1948. I was about 11 or 12 years old. That’s when we finally got an old phonograph. You had to plug it in and put the needle in it to play the record. And when the needle wore out, I used to put a straw in my mouth and just hold my teeth on it as the record was spinning and you could hear it. He had Lightnin’ Hopkins and Robert Johnson - all the old players. They were playing acoustic.

Before B.B. King died, our joke was “Man, I used to be driving a tractor for a dollar a day.” And an acoustic guitar then was $1.98 or $2.98. And I said, “Man, you put the guitar so high I had to buy a guitar on terms!” It took me a long time to be able to get there. As a matter of fact, a guy bought me my first one. Because I couldn’t afford it with what I was making on the farm.

Ryan : When you moved to Chicago at 21, what were some of the opportunities that existed for you that you were not going to find in Louisiana?

Guy : Watching Muddy Waters. I was telling somebody that last night. I knew I had to wait until I hit 21 to get into the clubs. Man, I walked into the clubs and I saw Howlin’ Wolf, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters. Most of them is not living no more.

But when you went in the clubs, you had to buy a beer. I didn’t even drink then. Muddy Waters and them taught me how to drink. “Here, drink this wine. Drink this schoolboy scotch and you won’t be shy!”

I was almost too shy to even try to sing. When you was talking to Muddy Waters like you’s talking to me, you’d be patting your feet!

Ryan : Is there a moment you recall getting to Chicago when you realized you were building a career - something sustainable that wasn’t just going to be a constant struggle?

Guy : If you watch this blues channel on Music Choice, the Chess people had their big record company.

When the Rolling Stones came over to try and do a demo with Chess before they got famous, I was in there doing a record called “My Time After Awhile.” And I said, “I ain’t never seen no man with this long hair and these high heel boots on.” I wanted to turn my amplifier up with a little feedback. And they said, “Don’t nobody want to hear that noise!”

Now, when the British heard me… I went there in 1965 and played with The Yardbirds. They just flew me there by myself. Because I had played some licks with the Wolf, the Muddys, the Little Walters and the Sonny Boys. Well, they was picking my little licks out. But I don’t know this. Finally, Leonard Chess heard that.

He called me. I had never talked to him in the studio. He said to Willie Dixon, “Tell him to put a suit on and come down here.” I said, “Well, I guess I’m through with Chess now.” But he wanted to talk to me and so I went on down there and walked in the office. I think it might have been a Jimi Hendrix lick. Very easily could’ve been Eric Clapton with the Cream. But [Leonard] said, “You listening to this?” I said, “So what?” He said, “Them are your licks! You brought that here and we was too f—ing dumb to listen to it. Now you can do what you want.”

Leonard didn’t live too long past that. And I went to Vanguard [Records] and I got my little break. I could quit driving the tow truck then.

Ryan : You’ve said a word here a few times during our conversation and that’s “learn.” And I’ve heard you use that word a lot - that it’s important to keep learning. Even this far along, several decades in, how has that approach continued to benefit you?

Guy : I think everything I did back then was important. Because there were so many great guitar players that could out play me, man. And I was trying to learn from every one of them. I saw Guitar Slim before I left Louisiana. I saw B.B. King. I saw Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker. And I said, “If I could ever just learn how to do it like that…”

After I saw Guitar Slim, he was wild and crazy. I saw B.B. King and he was smooth. And I said, “Lord, I would like to play like B.B. King - but I want to act like Guitar Slim!” So, I was using that Guitar Slim thing. All of them were sitting in chairs. And Guitar Slim walked on to the stage. And that’s where I got my idea.

So, when I got a chance - when they called me up because they found out I could play one lick like B.B. and another like John Lee Hooker - they said, “That little old boy here from Louisiana can play!” They’d call me on the stage. And they had the music stands. I thought they were reading music - but they weren’t. It was fake! They didn’t have no sheets. Here I am looking up there saying, “Oh s—t, I gotta learn how to read music or I ain’t gonna be around long…” I come to find out, they wasn’t even reading music, man! I was playing the same note all the time - but it worked.

Strangely enough, do you know when they found out I could play? I couldn’t hide it. I would like to watch them. I didn’t want them to know because they were going to call me up there! And every time I tried to stay in the back of the club and just listen and steal a lick from them, they’d find out. And they would curse! The Chess brothers would call you an “mf.” They would get on the microphone and call me that! “Come on up here, little motherf—er. I want you to play with me!” I’d say, “Man, I come here to learn something from you!”

Ryan : Sometimes, I’ll hear people talk about the blues with a negative connotation. But when I see you play the blues, it looks like unbridled joy. It’s uplifting. What does the blues mean to you?

Guy : You know, I said that last night from the stage. I just went up to my club and sang. But I watch people. When I go to the stage, I forget about myself. I look out. Do you ever notice a person with a frown on their face? Well, maybe you could say a joke or something and they’ll smile and that frown will leave. That’s the way I play. When I go to the stage, I intend to take that frown off your face. And if I don’t, you will see me changing notes! I don’t hardly rehearse with my band. My band has to just watch me. I better try something else. And all of the sudden, I’ll try something tricky.

Let me give you another example. Do you know that some nights, I go to the stage and play and walk off. And two days later, a guy will come to see me play and say, “I watched you last night. You must not have been feeling good.” And I’ll say, “Oh my god…” Because I thought I played well. Then there are times when I go up to the stage and thought I played bad. But another guy will come up and say, “Man, you was on last night!” And, so, I just think, “I might as well just forget this, close my eyes and go out there and try to take the frown off your face.”

Because you can’t ever please everybody - but you can try.

Hometown company move helps Gary, Indiana’s economic turnaround

Hometown company move helps Gary, Indiana’s economic turnaround

The move by century-old and hometown Indian Sugars to a new headquarters complex on the Gary, Indiana waterfront might herald a major turnaround in the hard-pressed city’s fortunes.

The move, announced in March, will see the company, which started out as a candy shop but now refines sugar in bulk and has facilities in several states, move from its longtime east side location to eight miles northwest on Buffington Harbor on the Lake Michigan waterfront. The move encompasses the company’s offices, manufacturing and shipping facilities and will be built in stages, beginning this quarter.

It’s also a major coup for new Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, who had an election vision for the waterfront, which was desperately in need of new development following the collapse of the onetime Majestic Star casino and hotel.

Indian Sugars will take up 55 acres of the site and says it will add an additional 22 acres. It’s the second such major announcement for the area, the first being California-based Fulcrum Energy’s decision to build a biofuels plant, converting municipal waste into transportation fuels.

Th company declined an interview as did the mayor. But in joint releases the firm praised the mayor’s “engaging and thoughtful” efforts to retain the company, which had considered a move out of the area.

“Mayor Melton and his team were passionate about our project and transparent that they didn’t want us to leave,” fourth generation family-owned business president John Yonover said.

“This move was a top priority for my administration’s first 100 days in office,” Melton also said.

Majestic Star closed in 2021. Its history is significant, bringing casino gambling to the state of Indiana in 1996, the brainchild of Detroit entrepreneur Don Barden. But the casino, which had suffered financial problems and one time bankruptcy, was a victim of a market shift to an inland competitor, the Hard Rock Casino, the state’s largest and with a hometown Jackson Five theme and performance space.

Redeveloping the deep-water port was a priority for the mayor, with observers saying it could well kickstart expansion not just of the harbor but the city of Gary generally.

“I believe this project is proof that Buffington Harbor and the adjacent footprint will provide Indiana Sugars and future businesses the opportunity to maximize their operations due to Gary’s unique transportation infrastructure,” the mayor said.

That includes the confluence of three interstates, two Class One railroads and a recently expanded Gary/Chicago International Airport, which specializes in cargo. Piggybacking on metropolitan Chicago, with the Windy City’s downtown only 25 miles away, is also a motivator.

Chuck Hughes, a former city councillor and now president of the chamber of commerce, says the city could capitalize on Chicago’s economic disadvantages.

“We’re trying to attract people from Illinois which has one of the highest tax rates in the country,” he said.

He called the announcement a further “building block” to reinvent the harbor.

Hughes said Gary has been hampered not just due to population flight and urban decay, but because of state mandated municipal balanced budgets, based overwhelmingly on property taxes.

Whereas neighboring Chicago might “just go into debt” to facilitate development Gary has to balance its budget.

“You can see the kind of strain that’s putting on a community that’s not getting a wealth of property tax revenue,” he said.

Even major onetime tax providers like US Steel’s Gary Works significantly downsized and appealed for a major tax break. The impact was huge since the company had paid almost 50 per cent of taxes. At the time, in 2002, the city’s budget was $68 million; 10 years later it was $47 million and facing a $15 million deficit.

Micah Pollak, who heads Indiana University Northwest’s Center for Economic Education and Research, said Indiana Sugars’ move is symbolic of a turnaround already in the region, ironically treated by the rest of the state as part of metropolitan Chicago yet seen by Chicago as definitely in Indiana.

“The rest of Indiana thinks of northwest Indiana as Chicago’s realm and Chicago is ‘No no no’ that’s Indiana’s realm,’” he said.

In fact, the area has seen a “dramatic rise” in new businesses with surrounding Lake County “adding a net of 1,585 new business establishments (+11 per cent) in the last 10 years, while over the same period Cook County, Illinois lost a net of 9,091 (-6 per cent) business establishments,” Pollak said.

He explained this may finally represent an awakening on the part of investors and developers. With railway and freeway access and a deep harbor, “I think people are starting to realize, ‘hey, this region is a potential major source of growth.’”

Golden Bachelor divorce shocker: Gerry and Theresa split after 3 months. Here's why

gary indiana tour

"The Golden Bachelor" on ABC showcased the romantic journey of older adults, offering them a chance to find love and companionship reality TV style. Golden bachelor Gerry Turner, a retired restaurateur and widower from Indiana, took center stage in Season 1.

Having endured the loss of his first wife, Turner sought a second chance at love. Amidst a pool of contestants, he formed a connection with 70-year-old Theresa Nist. Their budding romance and televised wedding captivated viewers as they navigated the complexities of love later in life.

But despite the seemingly fairy tale ending, the couple faced challenges after they tied the knot.

On April 12, they called it quits on "Good Morning America ."

Here is everything to know about Theresa and Gerry's split.

'Worth the adventure': Season 25 'The Bachelor' lead Matt James visited this Arizona restaurant

Why is Golden Bachelor divorcing his wife?

The reason for the split, according to Gary and Theresa, is disagreement over where to live.

They never moved in together after the wedding, splitting time between Indiana and New Jersey, where Theresa works.

Despite rumors about Gerry's dating history , they denied it factoring into their decision. Both expressed love for each other but agreed to live apart for their happiness. They remain open to finding love but not with each other.

Are Golden Bachelor and Theresa still together?

No, Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist are not together anymore. They announced their divorce just three months after their televised wedding on "Good Morning America," saying:

“Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations, and we’ve looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth, and we’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to dissolve our marriage,” Turner told Juju Chang in an interview for Good Morning America.

Why did The Golden Bachelor couple break up?

Theresa vowed to stick with Gerry through thick and thin, but their marriage ended when disputes over where to live became too much. They had heart-to-heart conversations and mutually decided to dissolve their marriage. They considered homes in New Jersey, where Theresa lives, and South Carolina but they couldn't agree on a location.

Turner and Nist emphasized that their decision was made in the best interest of their happiness. They clarified that their split was not due to falling out of love, expressing continued affection for each other. They stated their intention to be genuine and transparent throughout the process.

How old is the Golden Bachelor?

Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner is 72. Theresa Nist is 70.

Indiana Black Legislative Caucus holds town hall series to get public’s feedback

town hall.jpg

LAWRENCE — The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus kicked off their series of town halls on Saturday to share more insight about the laws passed during the 2024 legislative session of the Indiana General Assembly.

Many gathered at Lawrence’s Government Center to give feedback and input on the next session’s legislative priorities and what Hoosiers can do to stay informed.

“I think we had great attendance. We had a lot of engagement and a lot of questions, which is what we want,” State Rep. Earl Harris Jr., Chair of Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, said. “We want people to know we are here. You elected us and put us in office. We are responsible for you, and we will make ourselves available to you.”

Rep. Harris says during the town hall meetings, attendees can give their opinions on what they’d like to see officials focus on during the legislative session through a survey.

“It gives us a basis for the legislation we file so we can say, ‘Hey we know 90% of the people surveyed think this is important and something we should focus on,’” Rep. Harris said.

There will be five more town hall meetings around the state. They are as follows:

Indiana high schoolers can earn college credits for free this summer through Ivy Tech Community College

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indiana high school students can get a head start on earning college credits for free this summer from Ivy Tech Community College. For the fourth year, Ivy Tech’s 19 campuses across the state will offer free tuition and textbooks to all eligible Indiana high school students.

“Whether high school students are just starting to pursue college credit, almost finished with the Indiana College Core, or somewhere in between, Ivy Tech can help them explore their career options while saving time and money toward a credential of value,” said Dr. Sue Ellspermann, president, Ivy Tech Community College.

As Indiana’s talent pipeline, Ivy Tech recognizes that summer is a great time to help students pursue in-demand careers. We’re proud to offer free summer courses to students in our communities across the state so they can get a jump start on their college and career goals. – Dr. Sue Ellspermann, Ivy Tech President

To enroll in free summer courses at Ivy Tech, students must be Indiana residents at any high school in the state – including eighth graders entering ninth grade in the fall, graduating seniors, homeschool students, and students at adult high schools. Students who qualify for free summer courses will receive free tuition and textbooks. Courses are available from Ivy Tech’s more than 70 academic programs designed for Indiana’s high-wage, in-demand jobs. Many courses are included in the state’s Core Transfer Library, which ensures students can transfer their credits to public in-state institutions and most private and out-of-state institutions.

Offering free summer courses is part of a series of Ivy Tech initiatives aimed at increasing college going rates of youth and young adults in Indiana. Research finds students who earn college credit while in high school are more likely to enroll in college, stay enrolled in college until they graduate, and complete a credential or degree on time or early.

The free summer program complements Crossing the Finish Line , a similar state initiative that helps students who are just a few credits away from completing a credential do so at Ivy Tech or Vincennes University for free during the summer.

In addition to offering free summer courses, Ivy Tech is the state’s leading awarder of dual credit and the Indiana College Core, a block of 30 credit hours of general education coursework that is guaranteed to transfer between all public state colleges and universities, as well as some private institutions. In this academic year alone, Ivy Tech’s dual credit and dual enrollment offerings have saved Hoosier students and families more than $109 million.

“Indiana ranks first in the nation for students who are earning college credit before they even receive their high school diploma,” said Katie Lash, vice president of K-14 and strategic initiatives, Ivy Tech Community College. “Free summer courses are part of our mission to ensure more young people leave high school with a plan to earn industry-aligned credentials and degrees quickly and at minimal expense to them and their families.”

In summer 2023, more than 4,000 high schoolers enrolled in free Ivy Tech courses across the state. Interested students and their families can learn more about how to enroll in the program at IvyTech.edu/FreeCourses .
