Culinary walking tour of Antwerp

On this guided walking tour, you’ll get to explore the carefully restored architecture of Antwerp’s medieval historic district, while also trying a variety of the city’s local delicacies. Your guide will lead you to places like the Renaissance town hall, a fountain portraying a whimsical local legend and Grote Markt, a square dating back to the 16th century surrounded by ornate guild houses.

As you make your way through Grote Markt, Het Steen Castle and a couple impressive cathedrals, you’ll make a few stops for tastings. Antwerp is known for food like frites, waffles, artisanal chocolates and Belgian cheese. And no food tour in Belgium would be complete without a beer tasting; your guide will bring you to a local pub where you can quaff a regional beer.

The tour can either be a full day or half-day, depending on your interests, and the food stops can be tailored to your preferences and dietary restrictions.

This walking tour can begin from Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent or Brussels. If you’re coming from outside of Antwerp, you can travel either by private transfer or unaccompanied on a train. The length is flexible, depending on your interests, and your private local guide will combine the city’s historic sites with the local food scene.

For the historical side of things, you’ll see highlights such as Grote Markt, a 16th-century square in the heart of the old city. It boasts an extravagant Renaissance-style city hall with an arcaded ground floor and columns separating the mullioned windows on the higher floors.

In the square you’ll also see rows of ornate guild houses and the Brabo fountain, which features a patinaed statue of a man throwing a giant’s hand. The Antwerp legend says a Roman soldier named Silvius Brabo cut off the hand of a giant who had been doing the same to the boat captains who refused to pay the giant’s tolls on the Scheldt River.

Your guide will then take you to Het Steen, a 13th-century stone castle looming over the banks of the Scheldt. It’s Antwerp’s oldest building and has variously served as a fortress, prison, residence, sawmill, fish depot and museum.

Your tour will also include two of Antwerp’s most impressive places of worship. The Cathedral of Our Lady dates back to 1352, and is the largest Gothic church in Belgium, with a spire reaching 123 m (404 ft) into the sky. It’s also home to renowned artwork, in the form of intricately detailed stained-glass windows by Rubens.

Saint Paul’s Church has a plain-faced stone Gothic façade, though the contrast of the white walls and barrel-vaulted ceilings with the dark wood furnishings and red rugs give the interior a dramatic feel. Outside the church you’ll find a group of 63 life-size statues and nine reliefs that you can explore.

As you explore the city, your guide will bring you to food trucks, fast food restaurants and boutique stores to try some of the local cuisine, such as frites, waffles, artisanal chocolate, Belgian cheeses and filet d’anvers — beef that’s been salted, dried and smoked. You’ll also stop by local bars, where you can get a taste of Belgian beer.

If you’d like to extend the tour to a full-day, you’ll also see sights like the ornate stone Central Station and Meir, a popular pedestrian shopping street. Additionally, the food stops can be changed based on your food preferences or dietary requirements.

Discovering Belgian Food in Antwerp

When visiting Antwerp the other weekend during their gay pride, besides indulging in Antwerp’s nightlife, I also sought out some of the city’s food specialities. Belgium is famous for its foods—from chocolate to fries—but I wanted to see what else the city had to offer. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I had more than my fair share of chocolate over the weekend, but there were a few food surprises as well.

On a food & nibbling tour with Visit Antwerp , I discovered some of Antwerp’s food specialities. First up was a butter cookie from Philips Biscuits : the historic Antwerp Hand cookie . Antwerp’s city name derives from an old folklore about a giant’s hand ( Ant ) being cut off and thrown ( werpen ) into a river so Philips Biscuits sells the city’s namesake cookie—naturally in the shape of a hand.

On Saturdays, the exotic market at Theaterplein features international foods, fruits and vegetables. During our visit, there was everything from churros to African sweets.

In Belgium, it’s hard not to try a waffle . This one’s from Desire de Lille – one of the city’s most famous waffle houses

Belgian Chocolates

Belgium seems to love their chocolatiers and Antwerp was no different than my previous visits to Bruges and Brussels. It seemed like no matter where I went in Antwerp’s old city center, there were chocolate shops on either side of every street . On our nibbling tour, we visited The Chocolate Line . Their chocolates are legendary and besides offering strange-flavored chocolates (fried onions, anyone?), chocolatier Dominique Persoone sells lines of chocolate to rock stars and celebrities. Have you ever snorted chocolate? Didn’t think so.

seef bier

Antwerp’s hipster beer!

Another find on the Antwerp food tour was the city’s newest beer: Seef bier . Apparently made from a recipe that dates back to over 100 years ago, the beer was once the city’s most popular brew. In true hipster fashion, the old has been remade and restyled. Just like PBR has been turned into a venerable beer since its re-emergence, Seef which was once a poor man’s beer, is now one of the trendiest. It was my favorite beer I tasted while in Belgium!

Nice post. I’ve been to Brussels, Arlon, Bastogne, and Tongeren but for some reason can’t seem to be impressed by Belgium. This is a great post because I still haven’t visited Bruges or Antwerp and I feel like I would love it. Something keeps compelling me to try places in Belgium even though it’s a small country.

I really liked Antwerp’s food scene! There are a lot of great choices there.

' src=

Chocolate and head cheese. Strange country ;)

' src=

Love how you describe headcheese as being made from “way too many parts of the animal.” Yummy?

' src=

I’ve read about some Australian chocolate maker that’s apparently going to upstage the Belgians if they don’t step up their game. They’ll probably be up to the challenge, though.

' src=

As a veggie with a savoury tooth, we prefer the classic chips and mayo combo. However, we’d gladly wash that down with a bottle or two of Seef. Thanks for the tip, Adam.

Head spinning from that Fried Onion Chocolate… WHOA!

Yum! Though I’m not so sure about the onion flavored chocolate…

Mmmmm…I could eat the Belgian fries and chocolate all day!

Fried onion chocolate? Hmmm, a bit weird I think, haha. And good to see you included beer on the Antwerp list….home to one of the best beer bars in the world!

Can’t wait to get to Belgium to try out the food! My husband and I are such food enthusiasts!

Wow me likey the food in Antwerp! So exotic yet so classy!

Meeeeh. I really wanted to like this tour because Corneilus was very friendly and informative. However, I found the food options less substantative than other European food tours I've tried and certainly less so of a meal than I was anticipating and the therefore couldn't help feeling somewhat bamboozled as I was forking over the €55. In 2 hours (we had a group of 3, so we finished sooner than the advertised 3 hours, supposedly), we tried: *2 pieces of chocolate from The Chocolate Line (which Cornelius brought with him); *1 cookie in the shape of a small hand (Antwerpse handjes); *1 small cupcake; *1 dessert from De Ville; *3 varied croquettes w/salad; and *a Small pot of mussels from Fish A'go go. Perhaps because I'm not one that gets really excited over sweets, but more of a foodie that appreciates real food, I could have gone with 2 more savory, more filling items and only 2 sweeter tastings. The website says to "come hungry", so I did, and sadly at the end of the tour, I still was. The mussels saved the day, but in reality I could've found them on my own for much cheaper than the cost of the tour. 2.5 stars for an overpriced by half tour.

Beer Tours in Brussels

What makes the beer in Antwerp special?

Antwerp has a long beer brewing tradition that dates back centuries, but it doesn’t really stand out among the other Belgian cities.

All beer produced in Belgium is special due to the distinct characteristics of its beers, as well as the use of high-quality ingredients, such as top-notch malts, hops, and yeast.

On top of that, Belgian brewers apply traditional methods and innovative techniques to produce top-quality brews.

How much is a pint of beer in Antwerp?

The price of a draft pils such as Jupiler or Stella Artois is about €4 for a glass (25cl). White beer, Trappist or speciality beers will be more expensive. Count on a minimum of €5-6 for a glass (25cl) or bottle.

What is the most famous beer in Antwerp?

De Koninck, also known as “Bolleke,” is one of the most famous beers in Antwerp.

BELGIUM TRAVEL PLANNING RESOURCES

Getting to Belgium : Fly into one of the main international airports : Brussels Airport (BRU) or Charleroi Brussels South Airport (CRL). Take an international train to Brussels South Station. Or take a ferry to Dover or The Netherlands, then drive or take the train to Belgium.

Getting Around : For the major destinations, the train is by far the best option. You can book your train tickets here . If you’d like to visit smaller places, the most convenient way would be to rent a car. We always use Discover cars , they compare all the rental companies and give you the best rates.

Accommodation : Booking.com is the most popular accommodation platform in Belgium. It’s what I use every single time.

Guided tours : Use Get Your Guide or Viator to find fun tours in Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp. Or Guruwalk to find free walking tours in multiple destinations.

K-pop weekend: Tomorrow X Together, Zerobaseone and others to impress at 2024 Music Bank Belgium World Tour stop

Tomorrow x together, zerobaseone and other k-pop acts to stop in antwerp, belgium, this weekend for the first 2024 music bank concert..

Looking forward to another weekend K-pop concert series? The 2024 edition of KBS' Music Bank in Antwerp, Belgium, is here to cure your blues.

Tomorrow X Together, Zerobaseone and other K-pop groups to take the stage at Sportpaleis in Antwerp, Belgium, on April 20, 2024.(Instagram)

Announced in December 2023, the South Korean national broadcaster KBS pulled the curtain on the upcoming stop of the ongoing Music Bank World Tour series that kicked off in 2011 in Japan. The tour has so far done its rounds all around the globe, with myriads of K-pop acts performing live in international cities, including Tokyo, Paris, Jakarta, Mexico City, Hong Kong and more.

For the first 2024 live concert to keep the Music Bank dice rolling, several 4th Generation K-pop acts are heading to the largest and most famous concert venue in Belgium - Sportpaleis in Antwerp - on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

2024 Music Bank lineup for Antwerp concert

According to kpopplanet.eu, boy groups Tomorrow X Together (TXT), Oneus, Zerobaseone, RIIZE and girl groups StayC and (G)I-DLE will serve awe-inspiring tunes for the next stop of the Music Bank World Tour, which last dropped its Korean harmonies in Paris and Mexico City in 2023.

After their show-stopping performance in Belgium, Zerobaseone members will swiftly fly back to Seoul for the upcoming Seoul Festa 2024 Opening Party scheduled to take place on May 1, 2024. They will also be delivering stunning concert pieces at the M Countdown stage of 2024 KCON in Japan on the second day of the three-day music extravaganza.

Meanwhile, the HYBE Labels boy band TXT released its sixth mini-album, minisode 3: Tomorrow, on April 1.

Big Hit's official synopsis of the 7-piece record describes it as “a story of a boy who remembers a past promise and goes in search of “you” who he made the promise with. The boy recalls the innocent aspirations that he dreamed of with “you” in his youth and decides to find “you” and move forward to tomorrow. The boy says that tomorrow with “you” is hope and salvation.”

NewJeans, The New Six (TNX), StayC, AB6IX, ITZY and (G)I-DLE took the audience by surprise with their daunting stage presence in Mexico City in October 2023.
