Because the boat rental for Gigantes Island Hopping is quite expensive, it is best to travel in groups (at least four people), so you can share the cost. If you are traveling alone, try to join 3 group tours; it is best to do this over the weekend as the chance to meet other travelers is high. If you are doing a DIY tour of Gigantes Island, please include lunch for your boatman and guide. Tipping is also recommended.

Always check the weather forecast before venturing out for your own safety. Wear life jackets when taking the boat and swimming. Gigantes Island is in a remote location, so expect weak phone or internet signals. Bring mosquito repellent with you. Bring snacks and drinks, although there are small sari-sari stores where you can buy them. Most people stock up on this before leaving the port area.

How to get to Gigantes Island

To reach Gigantes Island, you need to fly to either Roxas City or Iloilo City, both located in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. From there, you can take a bus or van to the town of Carles, the gateway to Gigantes Island. The travel time from Roxas City to Carles is around 2 hours, while the journey from Iloilo City takes around 3-3.5 hours.

If you’re coming from outside the Philippines, the nearest international airport is the Iloilo International Airport. There are direct flights to Iloilo from some cities in Asia, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. If you’re coming from Manila, there are several daily flights to Iloilo from the capital’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

From the town of Carles, you can take a boat from the Bancal Port to Gigantes Island. The boat ride takes around 1-2 hours, depending on the weather and sea conditions. There is only one boat trip per day, which usually departs at around 10:30 a.m. If you miss the boat, you can also hire a private boat, but it will be more expensive.

There are several accommodation options on Gigantes Island, ranging from budget-friendly homestays to mid-range resorts. Some popular options include:

The town of Carles in Iloilo can be found in the Northernmost of Panay Island. Definitely, the place is far from the chaotic and busy city life. While Islas de Gigantes ( Gigantes Islands) started to attract a good number of tourists both local and abroad, the place is still free from the usual beach party life like the most popular beach or summer destinations are offering.

Islas de Gigantes (a.k.a as Gigantes Island, Isla Gigantes) is blessed with spectacular sceneries, clear waters, and white sand beaches. The rich vast blue seascape brimming with rich marine life; interesting caverns and caves; Palawan like rock formations and the long stretch of white sand beaches are just some of the reasons for people to visit the place.

Here’s my personal budget when we visited Gigantes Island. Please take note, that this budget was based on my place of origin – Bacolod City.

-Bacolod to Iloilo (Fastcraft Fare) – 260.00

-Iloilo Port to Tagbak Terminal (Taxi Fare) – 150.00

-Tagbak to Carles (Ceres Bus) – 197.00

-1 night, 2 day tour Package – 1,699.00

-Overnight Stay at Red Mandarin Beach Resort, Brgy. Barosbos, Carles – 500.00 (the air-conditioned room we got was priced at 1,000). But we divide the fee because I was with a friend. The room we got can actually accommodate 4 pax. So if you are traveling as a group, you can even save more. Our dinner was sponsored by friends who are staying in Carles. The reason why we stayed overnight at Barosbos is for us to arrive at Bancal Port before 9 am.

-Tricycle from Red Mandarin Beach Resort, Barosbos – Php 25.00/pax

-The fare to Iloilo City (Van) – 250.00, the van usually charged at 200/pax. But some of our fellow passengers going to Bacolod opted to take the RORO Vessel in Dumangas and the van driver decided to bring them to the port for an additional fee of 50/pax. Realizing that it will also be convenient for us, we also decided to take the RORO going back to Bacolod. -RORO Fare to Bacolod – PHP 96/pax, plus 30 terminal fee

I think the most practical way to enjoy Gigantes Island is to avail of the tour packages. In our case, we availed the 2 days/1 night tour package at a very affordable price of PHP 1,699.00 only.

The inclusion of this package includes the following: -Private service to and from the island and Bancal Port. -Room Accommodation (Fan Room only). Please don’t expect spectacular accommodation. However, the nipa hut that was given to us was already acceptable and decent. However, the toilet for the accommodation in this tour package is common or shared. If you wish to be upgraded to an air-conditioned accommodation with a private bath, you can approach the resort staff at an extra cost of course. -Full Board Meals During the Tour. This is one thing that you have to consider, they offer unlimited great food such as crabs, scallops, squid, grilled fish, soda and much more. Snacks are not included, so you may bring your own snack items if you are used to having in between meals. -You can ask for coffee or milo anytime. -Entrance and environmental fees are included in the Gigantes Island package Note: Solo travelers may join a big group.

Tangke Lagoon | Gigantes Island [ Islas de Gigantes ] | Tour

GIGANTES ISLAND / ISLAS DE GIGANTES TOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1 -8:30 am to 8:45 am: Assembly at Bancal Port Carles -8:45 am to 9:00 am Registration at the Tourism office. Participants may opt to wear already their swimming attire and just use some cover-ups as island hopping starts the moment you leave Bancal Port. A comfort room is available at the port. -9:00 am Departure for Gigantes Island (please take note that this itinerary may change depending on sea conditions. -Pulupandan Island- Photo op -Tanke (Enchanted Lagoon) – While at Tanke you may try Cliff diving and Swimming

12NN: Check-in | Lunch at the resort.

-Cabugao Gamay. This place is the most photograph spot in Gigantes Island. -Bantigue Sandbar -Antonia Beach- Snorkeling and swimming plus picture taking. Antonia Beach offers a Banana boat ride at PHP 200/pax (minimum of 5 heads) and Jetski at PHP 2000 every 30 minutes. These rides are no longer included in the Gigantes Island package. -Back to the resort -7:00 pm dinner -8:00pm: free time

-7 AM Breakfast

-Bakwitan Cave. Spelunking at Bakwitan Cave takes 2 to 2.5 hours. The activity includes boulder climbing, trekking, etc. The level of difficulty of this activity ranges from moderate to difficult depending on your physical condition. I don’t suggest bringing kids while doing spelunking. People with physical difficulty may opt to forego this activity as well.

-Light House. The lighthouse can be traced back in the 1800’s so I guess its worth to visit the place while in Gigantes Island.

-Mini Boracay. This place offers superfine talcum-like sand.

-Balbagon Island (we opted not to visit this Island anymore as we are catching some schedules)

-12:45 pm: Quick shower | Lunch

-1:30 pm: Travel back to Bancal port

TRAVEL TIPS

Only Smart and Sun Cellular have signals at Gigantes Island. If you a postpaid subscriber to other telecom networks, you can simply buy prepaid Sim cards from Smart or Sun Cellular.
No banks and ATM Machines at Gigantes Island. So bring enough cash.
Sunscreen is a must when visiting the Island. Whenever possible use sunblock with high SPF, remember you will be in the water most of the time.
You can bring some snacks with you. However, sari-sari stores are also accessible on the Island.
Bring your towel, shampoo, and soap. They are not provided at the resort.
Electricity is already available on the island.
Bring bottled water for the Island Hopping. You can also have it refilled at the resort for free.
Don’t forget your medicines especially if you have some maintenance. Of course, a first aid kit would be very helpful.
I was very happy that I brought along with me my action camera along with my DSLR. Since water activities are nice things to do while navigating Gigantes Island, action cameras came in very handy. On the other hand, my DSLR allowed me to take high-resolution photographs. Whenever possible, extra batteries are very helpful.

HOW TO GO TO GIGANTES ISLAND / ISLAS DE GIGANTES

Via Roxas Airport, Roxas City, Capiz

If you are coming from Manila, you may opt to go to Gigantes Island via Roxas Airport in Roxas City, Capiz because it’s the nearest airport. From Roxas City, you can take the Ceres buses (Vallacar Transit) with Estancia Route. Via Iloilo International Airport, Iloilo City.

If no flights are available from your place of origin to Roxas Airport, you can take the Iloilo International Airport which is serving more flights and destinations. From Iloilo International Airport, take a van going to Iloilo City and from there take another ride going to Tagbak Terminal in Jaro District, You may opt to take a taxi directly from Iloilo International Airport via Taxi at an approximately 20-30 minute drive. From Tagbak terminal, you may opt to take either Ceres Bus (Vallacar Transit) or Van traveling to Carles or Estancia.

Traveling by bus may take 3-4 hours at Php 190/pax while traveling by Van might be a bit faster by 30 minutes and at Php 200/pax. However, buses are more comfortable because it offers more legroom.

Via Kalibo Airport | Boracay

For people coming from Boracay, you will be traveling first to Kalibo first at approximately 1 hour. From Kalibo, you need to travel via Roxas City as there no buses or vans traveling from these places to Carles or Estancia.

From Bacolod City

From Bacolod City, you can take the fast craft to Iloilo City. From the seaport, take a taxi to Tagbak Terminal at about PHP 150. Then take the bus or Van going to Carles at PHP 190/pax. You may also take the RORO (slow ferry) to Dumangas Port at PHP 96/pax with a travel time of 2 hours. From the port, you will travel to Barotac Nuevo, where you can get a bus or van to Estancia.

From Bancal Port ( Address : Carles ) to Gigantes Island

The most convenient and popular jump-off point going to Gigantes Island is the Bancal Port in Carles. At Bancal Port you will find a Tourism Office wherein you will pay for your environment fee. You can also ask for some assistance in this office. Travel time from Bancal to Gigantes Islands is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours covering 14 nautical miles. A regular scheduled local passenger pump boat runs once daily from Bancal Port to Gigantes Norte Island. The pump boat departs Bancal Port at 10 AM and leaves the Island at 2 PM. However, those who are availing the tour packages are served special trips by the tour operators at their agreed scheduled time.

Hi Mrs. Rivera, usually the trip to Gigantes Island would take 2 days. Because you will not enjoy the spots if you will just go to all destination and have your photo op. However, if you really wanted to have just a day tour, perhaps you rent/hire a pump boat to make you a trip exclusive for your group. But if you will be joining others, I don’t know if there is a day tour.:)

I’m not sure if after 5PM there are still buses going to Carles. BUt most travelers to Carles stayed overnight at Roxas City so that they can catch the morning schedule of ferry from Carles to Islas de Gigantes

Gigantes Islands – Complete Island Tour Guide

Islas de Gigantes or the Gigantes Islands is perhaps the most beautiful place in central Philippines. Fortunately for you, these islands are still overlooked by most tourist when compared to islands like Bohol or Boracay.

With only a few resorts on Gigantes Norte, the island is far from over-developed. You won’t find any 5-star resorts here. What you will find is a local community that is happy to share their “scallop” island with you.

Is the Gigantes Islands for you?

GO GO GO – This is the place to go if you want to experience a diverse set of beautiful islands that haven’t yet been overly developed. We’re talking sand bars, rock formations, lagoons, and caves! The main island (Gigantes Norte) is far from a tourist island, you’ll be staying with the (very friendly) locals in their environment. You must be comfortable with pump boats and traveling by boat as the trip to get here can be long.

DON’T GO – If you’re ideal vacation is being pampered at a 5-star resort. No one is going to bring you overpriced cocktails on the beach here darling. If you don’t like seafood, I would also stay away.

How to book a tour of the Gigantes islands?

We recommend booking a tour with one of the accommodation providers on the island. Packages are usually for 3 days and 2 nights which include room, food, and a day tour. We stayed with Gigantes Hideaway Resort which organized the amazing tour below.

1 – LIGHTHOUSE VISIT

After dropping our bags off, our guide gave us a few minutes to rest and have coffee before showing us to our first destination. We headed on his scooter to the northeast of the island where an old Spanish lighthouse awaited us. This was in incredible spot for photos and flying the drone.

2 – ANTONIA BEACH

This is also know as “bread loaf” island due to the same of the island’s main rock formation. This was the first stop on our official island tour, and it was perhaps my favorite island. We were the only tourists in site so we had the entire island to ourselves. Every angle of the island seemed to be the perfect photo site. Bonus, if you like snorkeling, this is the place to do it!

3 – BANTIQUE SAND BAR

The shape of this sandbar is so unique as it changes with the tide at the change of the seasons. Bonus, the sand and water here are super clear so it’s a great spot to take a quick dip on the water before continuing the rest of your island tour.

4 – GAMBAY ISLAND

This is probably the most photographed of all the Gigantes Islands. As a photographer, this is one of the reason Pierre wanted to come to the Gigantes. In fact, the locals have nicknamed the island “selfie island”.

5 – TANGKE LAGOON

This place blew my mind. The water, the rocks, the cliffs, the drops. This hidden gem is a real beauty to be witnessed (only during high tide of course). Just bare in mind that you may not be the only one wanting to bask in its glory. Caretakers limit the visit time to 10 min during times.

6 – BATIWAN CAVE

This cave is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared to work during your 2hr adventure. If you’re interested in seeing what the adventure was like, check out our video below:

BACK TO GIGANTES HIDEAWAY RESORT

We stayed at the Gigantes Hideaway Resort which had accommodation ranging from fan huts to more modern air-conditioned rooms. We selected the a/c rooms which were fantastic.

The meals here were delicious!

GIGANTES ISLANDS: 2D1N Budget Travel Guide + Itinerary To The Northern Jewel Of Iloilo

Gigantes Islands has always been one of my dream destinations. I first saw it when the lovely Missy of Love Eat Wander posted her adventures in these stunning islands on Facebook a few years back. That immediately caught my attention and had made me look forward to a time when my eyes finally get to marvel at its beauty. Fast forward to 2018 and the Gigantes Islands is now one of the rising tourist destinations in the country. And although I am not much of a fan of popular places, in me still reigned that wanting to see it. So when I got my hands on a discounted plane ticket to Iloilo during CebuPac’s piso sale, I made sure not to miss a trip to this paradise.

Gigantes Islands or Islas De Gigantes is home to some of the most beautiful white sand beaches, colorful underwater environment free divers would surely drool over and stunning lagoons with the bluest of waters. But what I really loved about it was its infectious tropical vibe and that impeccable elegance characterized by the limestone rock formations in some of the islands which are reminiscent to those of El Nido and Coron . Not to mention that panoramic sunset we got to witness during our visit. Moreover, the people of Islas De Gigantes are some of the friendliest I have encountered during my travels. Other than the unlimited scallops and their sumptuous local dishes, their kindness and laughter will be few of the reasons why you would keep coming back.

GETTING TO KNOW GIGANTES ISLANDS

Islas De Gigantes is divided into two major groups of islands, the northern and southern islands. In some days, the northern islands are not accessible due to unfavorable sea conditions. Hence tours normally focus on the southern islands commonly known as Gigantes Sur. Allow me to tell you about each one of these islands that will surely take your breath away.

1. Pulupandan Islet – From the port in Carles, it will take an hour to reach the very first stop of the tour, Pulupandan Islet – a very small island loved for its beach of white sands and rough coral stones. What makes it charming though is the lone coconut tree which stood in the middle of the island with a small native hut underneath it. There’s also a part of the island where we witnessed waves create a dramatic splash against a rock formation.

2. Cabugao Gamay Island – This is probably the most popular island of Gigantes and definitely the most photographed. Cabugao Gamay Island is the face of Islas De Gigantes and I could not imagine it without it. The island is consist of a sandbar dotted by some coconut trees which connects two karst formations. A remarkable view of the island as well as of the surrounding waters can be witnessed atop one of the karst formations which will only take 10 minutes to climb along a wooden stair.

3. Antonia Beach – Antonia Beach in my opinion is the most beautiful beach among the rest of the islands we visited. Its sands are whiter and finer compared to the others. However, what fascinated me about this island is the lively underwater environment found just a few meters away from its shores.

4. Puting Baybay Beach – Located on the same island as Antonia Beach, Puting Baybay reminds me so much of El Nido . The massive yet intricate rock formations are pure beauty against the turquoise clear waters of this beach. It has the same fine white sands as the former but those pale in comparison to the gorgeous limestone wall and formations scattered along the beach.

5. Bantigue Island – Another island that features a stunning beach is Bantigue Island. What sets it apart from the other islands though is its long sandbar of white sand and rough coral stones. Although it is not as charming as Kalanggaman Island, it still is beautiful in its own way and is worthy of a visit.

6. Tangke Lagoon – Much like the hidden lagoon in El Nido , Tangke Lagoon is tucked inside towering karst formations like a volcanic crater. Inside it lies a natural pool of clear turquoise water where visitors can take a plunge and simply have a good time.

TAKEAWAYS DURING OUR VISIT

What I’m going to share here is about our 2D1N tour in Gigantes Islands. It’s not the usual DIY thing that I love doing but I actually found it quite practical especially since we were travelling in a group of only 4 people. We all know how exasperating it could get to haggle prices just to stay within budget while travelling and that could get extra difficult if you are solo or in a small group. Hence we chose to book a tour from a local coordinator.
It’s okay to come from Iloilo City and travel to Carles Port early in the morning to catch the tour which normally starts at 8AM just like what we did. Our first day in Panay Islands was spent exploring old churches in Iloilo and visiting Garin Farm that we ran out of time to travel to Carles as we returned to the city late. We spent the night in Iloilo City and early the following morning, took the first van bound to Carles at 5AM. Travel was swift and hassle free that we arrived in Bancal Port, Carles a little over 7AM.
Gigantes Island tours don’t require a reservation and can be DIYed but to avoid delays especially during peak season, it is best to book a pre-arranged tour just like what we did. We got our 2D1N tour from Gigantes Island Tours & Services for P1599/person which already included everything except our land transpo from and to Iloilo City. It was quite a fair price considering how stressful it could get just to charter a tour boat, look for affordable accommodation, hunt for the best places to eat not to mention the fees required on every island. I always prefer to travel DIY but if there is a better way to do it without me getting ripped off my budget, why not.
Don’t expect fancy accommodation. During our visit, most of the accommodations available were homestays but they weren’t at all that bad. We still had us a secured fan room with bunk beds complete with mattress, blankets and pillows and decent sleep. However, I would really emphasize that you take care of your belongings. Incidents of theft were reported several days after our visit so you would do best to take caution.
As previously stated, most of the accommodations available were homestays. This maybe is true for Gigantes Sur since it is a fishing village where the beach is used as docks for fishing boats and is not really too inviting for a dip. This is where we hope the locals find a way to sustain tourism without polluting our oceans since during my visit I have observed the beach were filled with plastics. Gigantes Norte however is a different story. Here lie several resorts where you can expect a more decent accommodation and beach perfect to catch some sea and sun.
Since we got us an organized tour that includes 4 meals (Day 1’s lunch and dinner and Day 2’s breakfast and lunch), we were able to save ourselves from the stress of looking for places to eat. Not only that the food we were served was delicious, but they were also more than enough to satiate our hunger.
It was stated during our visit that visitors who didn’t register in Bancal Port will not be allowed entry in Tangke Lagoon since it requires a permit. These permits are only issued by the Tourism Office in Bancal Port, Carles.
Speaking of Tangke Lagoon, I was quite disappointed during our visit. Not that it didn’t satisfy my expectations but we just went there at the wrong time. Tangke Lagoon is best visited during high tide hours to make sure the pool is filled with water to the brink. During our visit, it was almost dry. Too bad.
Since the lighthouse was not accessible due to rough seas, we also passed on the spelunking in Pawikan and Bakwitan caves. Instead, along with other visitors, we headed back to Carles after breakfast of our 2nd day to be on our way to Bacolod. If you wanna do the same, you can always have it arranged with your tour coordinator. Not sure whether an additional fee is involved but as for us, it was free.
The sunset we witnessed in Gigantes Islands was so dramatic. It was the various shades of crimson colliding in the sky that made it so perfect against the calm sea reflecting it. I highly reco you take the time to sit at the beach and observe the locals as the day comes to end. This will let you appreciate the simplicity of their lifestyle and the little things that make them smile.
Spend time with the locals. Know their story. Laugh with them. Play games with them. Just be crazy. Be yourself. The people of Gigantes were very friendly we had a night full of boisterous laughter over a card game and several bottles of Red Horse beer I actually lost count of. It was sick! They surely gave me a night I would definitely remember for the rest of my life.

WAYS TO GET TO GIGANTES ISLANDS

There are several ways to get to Gigantes Islands which even include taking a passenger boat from the town of Estancia in Iloilo but just to be fair to the locals of Carles, I would suggest you take the latter as your jump off point instead.

Iloilo – From the airport, ride a passenger van to take you to the van or bus terminal in Tagbak (P50). Taking a cab is another option. Then ride a bus or van to Carles (3Hrs ; P200). Earliest trip is at 5AM and latest is at 4PM. Vans drop off passengers going to Gigantes Islands directly in Bancal Port while the bus drop is in Balasan Terminal which requires another 30 minutes of trike to the port.
Roxas – From the airport, ride a tric or a jeep to the bus or van terminal going to Carles. For most people, Roxas is the more ideal airport since it would only take 2 hours or even less to get to Carles via bus or van at P150/passenger. Similar to vans coming from Iloilo, drop off is at Bancal Port but bus is at Balasan Terminal and requires another tric to the port.
From Boracay – There are buses and vans from Caticlan going to Roxas City which depart by the hour daily as early as 5AM. Travel may take 4-5 hours. The Kalibo route is also another option that requires a bus or van to Kalibo and another bus or van to Roxas City. From Roxas City, ride another van or bus going to Bancal Port.
From Tibiao, Antique – Ride a bus to Kalibo (1Hr ; P100) then ride a bus or a van to Roxas City (1Hr ; P100). Ride another bus or van to Carles (2Hrs ; P150) and trace your way to Bancal Port.

Note: For those without pre-arranged tours, passenger/public boats from Bancal Port depart thrice daily at 8AM, 10AM and 2PM and drop off passengers in Langub in Gigantes Norte where tour boats, resorts/hostels and several restaurants are available. Boats going back to Bancal Port depart Langub at 11AM and 4PM daily. Fare is P70/passenger.

SOME USEFUL INFO FOR DIY TRAVELERS

Transportation.

Passenger/Public boats depart from Bancal Port to Langub in Gingantes Norte at 8:AMAM, 1:30PM and 4:30PM. Passengers are required to register and pay the environmental fee at the Tourism Office. Boats going back to Bancal Port depart Langub at 7AM, 10:30AM and 3PM.
Island hopping boats are offered by locals in Langub however if you are alone or in a small group and would like to limit the cost, island hopping tours are usually available in hostels and resorts which you can share with other guests.
Islas De Gigantes is best explored for 3 days. This will give you the time to enjoy each of the islands of Gigantes Sur and discover the less visited spots of Gigantes Norte.
For those with limited time, 2D1N tour is more ideal as it will give you sufficient time to explore and enjoy the islands. Plus the tour wouldn’t be that exhausting.

The very reason we want to go to Iloilo is to see Isla Gigantes. It was a sight to behold. 1st stop Cabugao Gamay. It was fascinating to see the rock formations made as they said by visitors. I need to go up to a steep mountain to be able to see the whole island. But I was wrong, just 50 steps staircase and I can see the entire island. It was beautiful! Love it. Perfect! 2nd stop Antonia island resort. Here you will be able to have a delicious and cheap lunch! I’m not kidding. You can buy a scallop for P1.00 per pc. Yes, you read it right! The food was heaven! Fresh and cooked well. And of course, you get to eat the menu along the beach! Again Perfect! 3rd stop, the Tangke saltwater lagoon. It was beautiful — clear cold water. Amazing sight. 4th stop, Bantigue Sandbar. It was past ten, but still, you’ll be able to see the sandbar. Lovely. Last is Sicogon. Nice beach. I love the place. It is so quiet. Perfect for relaxation. Overall, it was a truly fantastic trip!

Gigantes Islands Guide for First Time Travelers

The Gigantes Islands , also known as Islas de Gigantes or the islands of giants, is a remote group of islands located off the coast of Carles and Estancia towns in northeastern Iloilo, Philippines. It takes at least 5 hours to get there from Iloilo City. Those willing to go the “extra mile” can look forward to enjoying beautiful seascapes and a laid-back island lifestyle that Gigantes has to offer. The islands are blessed with pristine white sand beaches, bountiful fresh seafood, and jagged rock formations shrouded by mystical tales of locals. Despite the increase of tourist arrivals in recent years, Gigantes has retained its off-beat charm and remains relatively underdeveloped compared to Boracay, Bohol, and other mainstream tourist destinations in the Philippines.

Things to Do and Tourist Spots

What are the best things to do in Gigantes? Here’s a few from our list of the best tourist spots and attractions in Gigantes .

Take an island hopping tour – A visit to Gigantes is not complete without taking an island hopping tour to see its magnificent beaches and islands. It takes half a day, at least, to visit the main sites, which includes Cabugao Gamay Island, Tangke , Antonia Beach , Bantigue Island, and Pawikan Cave .

Relax at white sand beaches – Gigantes is blessed with many white sand beaches and sandbars. The main islands, Gigantes Norte, and Gigantes Sur, may have their own sandy beaches but the best ones can be found at Antonia, Cabugaw Gamay Island, and Bantigue, which can only be reached by boat from the resorts.

Explore mystical caves – The islands are home to many caves hidden behind steep rock formations and cliffs. Many of these like Pawikan Cave have spacious caverns that can be easily explored. It is said that the island chain got its name from over-sized coffins found at Bakwitan Cave in Gigantes Norte that contained gigantic sets of human bones.

Visit the old lighthouse – Ruins of a Spanish-colonial lighthouse found at the northern shore of Gigantes Norte Island. Climbing to the top of the modern lighthouse that stands beside it affords a breathtaking view of the sea.

Go Rock Scrambling – A very steep rocky trail in Gigantes Sur leads to the top of the row of limestone cliffs that the locals call as the “Boulevard.” This high vantage point provides a 360-degree view of Gigantes group of islands and the Visayan sea.

Feast on fresh seafood – You can look forward to cheap and fresh seafood in Gigantes, unofficially known as the scallops capital of the Philippines. The islands are also abundant in fish, squid, crabs, shrimp among other aquatic delights. Prices of seafood here and in Estancia are more affordable than the cities of Iloilo and Roxas, and definitely a lot cheaper than Manila or Boracay.

Resorts and Accommodations

Most of the established resorts can be found in Gigantes Norte Island. These resorts offer basic accommodations and are catered to budget-conscious travelers. Tent-style accommodations are also quite popular in Antonia Beach and Cabugao Gamay Island. Additionally, intrepid travelers can arrange a homestay at Gigantes Sur.

Transportation

The towns of Carles and Estancia are the main jump-off points, which can be reached by land from all major transport hubs in Panay Island including Iloilo, Roxas City, and Boracay. Aboard land and ferry connections, travel time to Gigantes (via Carles) takes around 5-6 hours from Iloilo City, 3-4 hours from Roxas City, and 6-7 hours from Boracay/Caticlan.

Bancal Port in the town of Carles is the most convenient jump off point and fastest way to get to Gigantes Islands. Passenger boats from both Carles and Estancia run once daily leaving around noontime to Gigantes. Alternatively, tourists can also charter a boat to get to and around Gigantes from either seaport.

To travel between islands in Gigantes, you need to charter a boat since there are no options for commuting. The bigger islands, Gigantes Norte and Gigantes Sur, have narrow inland roads connecting different villages on the island.

Typical Expenses

Accommodation costs – Fan cottages start at P200 per person per night. Aircon cottages start at P1,500 for cottages that can fit 2 to 4 people.

Transportation costs

Iloilo City to Estancia – Bus fare is P170 to 180 per person, while the van fare is P150.
Estancia Bus Terminal to Estancia Port – Tricycle fare is P10 per person.
Estancia to Gigantes – The fare on the commuter pumpboat to Gigantes Norte is P80 per person. The cost of the chartered roundtrip transfer to Gigantes plus a whole island hopping tour is around P5,000 per boat.
Within Gigantes Norte or Sur – Motorycle taxi costs P10 per person per way

Activities and Tour costs

Island Hopping – Chartering a pumpboat for a whole-day island hopping tour around Gigantes (including a guide) costs P1,500 to P2,000 for up to 10 people. The guide costs an additional P500.
Cabugaw Gamay Island – P20 entrance fee per person
Antonia Beach – P20 entrance fee per person
Gigantes Norte Lighthouse – P60 per person for the roundtrip motorcycle taxi transfer.
Bakwitan Cave Tour – P500 for the cave guide and P200 for the roundtrip motorcycle taxi transfer.

Itinerary and Budget

When taking the commuter pumpboat to Gigantes, spending at least 3 days and two nights is recommended since the boat arrives in the island late in the afternoon and leave early morning the next day. If you are hiring your own chartered pumpboat, it is possible to visit Gigantes on an overnight trip from Iloilo City.

Travelers can also spend the night at the town proper of Carles or Estancia, where there are more options for beach resorts and hotels, and then charter a boat to explore the islands of Gigantes. When taking this alternative, it’s better to stay at mainland Carles since it is much nearer to Gigantes than Estancia.

3 days and 2 nights Itinerary

Sample 3D2N Gigantes itinerary for do-it-yourself (DIY) budget travelers. The estimated budget is around P2,500 to P3,000 per person for a group of 4 people traveling from Iloilo by van, staying at a fan room in Gigantes Norte, and doing all of the activities mentioned below. This estimate includes the roundtrip transport commute from Iloilo City, meals in Estancia / Gigantes, and the island hopping charter plus entrance fees.

Get Oriented

Buy food (at least for the first day), water, and other necessities in Estancia since the islands are limited to sari-sari type stores only. On your second day, you could buy fresh seafood in the islands but be sure to go to the selling area early morning since the locals usually send most of their catch to the mainland. You may also arrange this with your resort.
Be sure to have enough drinking water for the whole duration of your stay. There is potable spring water in Gigantes Sur if your stomach is up for it.
Electricity only runs at scheduled hours of the day/night. Electricity is turned on late in the afternoon until 11pm and then switched to a power generator, depending on the resort.
The Gigantes group of Islands are also popularly known as Islas de Gigantes , which means “Islands of Giants” in Spanish. Its two most populated and largest islands by land area are Isla de Gigantes Norte (North Gigantes Island) and Isla de Gigantes Sur (South Gigantes Island).

Bancal port in Carles is a better gateway to Gigantes. The boat ride is shorter because it is closer to the islands.

The ferry route from Cebu to Estancia, Iloilo is not from Daanbantayan, but from Bantayan Island . There are ferries from Estancia that go to Gigantes. You may also travel by land to Bancal Port in Carles and ride a ferry from there.

I would like to commend the writer as he definitely was thinking of his fellow Filipinos who would want to visit the islands. The practical rates and options he enumerated are very encouraging for a mid-class earner who wants to treat the kids to a good but cost-attainable vacation. It depends on what is included in the package. Carles is the best jump-off point to Gigantes since it is nearer to the island.

Hi Marcos, Its is possible to explore gigantes for atleast one day? We only have 3 days and 2 nights trip but we decided to visit boracay first for maybe 2 days and one night . We rent a van so no need to wait for the buses and save time. Do we need to book a pumpboat ?. How many person per pumpboat?

Yes it’s possible, but you have to plan the timing well. It’s better to hire a pumpboat, if you want to maximize your time. You can rent it for the roundtrip transfer to Gigantes and the island hopping around the islands. I suggest that you do Gigantes first since it’s quite far, and then visit Boracay, where it’s nearer to Caticlan or Kalibo Airport. It’s possible to do a day trip to Gigantes and spend the night at either Carles or Roxas, if you have your own transport.

It’s possible to do it either way, but I’d go to Gigantes first since it’s the more active part of your trip and you can manage your trip better in Boracay, in case you want to rush back to Iloilo to catch your flight. Here’s a sample itinerary you can follow:

Day 1 Arrival at Iloilo Airport Iloilo to Bancal Port, Carles transport by land Gigantes Island Hopping via Bancal Port

Day 2 Gigantes/Carles to Boracay transport. Depending on what time you leave, you can arrive in Boracay as early as mid-afternoon Stay in Boracay. Just came back from a 3D/2N stay in Gigantes Norte – Arjan Resort. If you seek seclusion and tranquility stay at the private resorts in Cabugao Gamay and San Antonia. Do not stay in Gigantes Norte and Sur resorts unless you don’t mind being surrounded by the island’s residents. People’s houses are literally at the back of Arjan and Jesa resorts (both at Norte), they’re beach front alright but it’s always low-tide and no waves – you got to walk at least 50 meters for a knee deep water, it’s more like a lake than a sea.

Solo travellers please be warned, do not eat in Arjan resort. There’s a 150 paluto or service charge and ingredients charge on top of your order. E.g. Half kilo of scallops is Php 90 + 1 cup of rice Php 15 + service charge 150 = 255 Total for just 1 meal. Paluto is only worth the Php 150 if you’re in a big group.

The blogger of this site might want to update info: Entrance fee in Cabugao Gamay is now Php 50 and Php 40 in San Antonia, it more than doubled since this article was written.

People might want to know that there’s a boat travelling to and from Carles and Gigantes island. Carles is closer to the island – just 45-minute boat ride as opposed to 2 hours from Estancia port. It leaves at 10 am for Gigantes and goes back to the main island at 1 pm. Much earlier than the ones in Estancia (2 pm to Gigantes and 8 am the next day back to Estancia – not a very efficient time). Best to do day tour if you’re after the island hopping experience only.

It is generally safe to go to Gigantes at any month of the year as long as there is no incoming typhoon or any strong weather disturbances. October is not particularly frequented by Typhoons, but it may happen on your trip, so it’s best to check weathers forecasts before you go.

I have watched drew’s gma7 episode of isla gigantes and i was amazed of the island. I have an early booking Mar29 for our 3d2n tour on April 25to27. He confirmed my booking for package rate of 4 pax. I was requesting since then to have 2 rooms no with no reply. I understand since the island dont have enough signal. I texted again for confirmation of two room last April 20. He replied “we’ll try mam”! What??? A 1 month reservation booking just to reply we’ll try”??? We arrived 3pm and sit at their dining area. The lady in their office ( sister of Joel) told us our room was have to set up. after an hour.Nataniel (our tour guide) advise us to go to our room in their extension. I was shocked for our room. its like the owner of the house evacuated for us to sleep. Cabinets of the owner was still inside no padlock open house. No lights in cr. NO BED FRAMES! I ask the management what happen to our reservation??? We are uncomfortable on our room. The guy told us there is no available room. The only option was tent and transfer in Balubadiangan island.. Its like a take it or leave it option. After dinner we decided our group to transfer on other resort /homestay but the island tour will still be availed at Hideaway inn. The lady frontdesk (sister of joel) offered us for 2500 a/c room. It was other resort in island . OMG! The room rate was offered 1500 for aircon room of 4pax. Then she will quote me 2500. We transfer at Dwelling place for an a/c room 1500 /night 4pax 200m away from hideaway inn. Fyi Dwelliing place (homestay inn) Imagine we will have our meal on their site. We need to walk 200m . The motorbike was always unavailable. we need to wait 30min for their motorbike. Tsk tsk This is my worst booking from all my local travelled experience!

Gigantes Island is truly amazing! I think the Hideaway inn offers a lot to exprience the Best on the island. I saw other bloggers. that’s why i chose to booked here. What’s bad was they overbooked the guests! For all the travellers out there before you make a reservation on this resort. Make sure you will get the room that what they offered! I have images or text confirmation to prove my experience.

Hi! We’ll be going to Roxas City this coming Saturday. Our problem is that we have a tight flight schedule: arriving at 11AM in Roxas Airport (11/29) then departing at 11AM on Monday (12/01) in the same airport. But there’s only 1 passenger boat plying Estancia-Gigantes route which leaves between at 2PM. Will we be able to make it? Is there an alternative way to get in & out of Gigantes?

Rainy days are likely to happen in October but, not unless there is a clear Typhoon warning from weather agencies, Gigantes is relatively safe to visit and certainly allowed. There are multiple (simple) accommodation options when you reach Gigantes Norte. You can also arrange your island hopping tour there. If you are searching for a place to stay with better amenities, you might want to consider staying at the many resorts in the mainland and just make a day trip to Gigantes on a hired pumpboat.

If you go to the island alone, you could either rent the pumpboat on your own or try to scout the resorts in Gigantes Norte for other travelers and ask if they would be willing to let you join.

The natural beauty of the islands is still intact. However, I am not sure if the accommodations are already functional. Most of the structures in the island were swept away by the strong winds of Typhoon Yolanda. If you are bringing a tent and planning to camp there, no problem.

If you’re looking for more comfortable accommodations, I suggest staying in mainland Carles or Estancia and hire a pumpboat for a day trip around the islands.

Hi, I have booked a round trip ticket, but the return (Ilo-Ilo to Manila) was I think could give me a problem since my flight schedule is 2:30pm (ETD). Can I catch the flight if the pump boat will leave the Gigantes Island at exactly 7am? We just explored the islands before this May 2013 ends. The place is worth the long travel from Iloilo City. We stayed overnight but we were able to see all the islands and experience things beyond our limits. With that, i wanna share how we maximized our 30 hours of exploration.

We tried to contact Joel Decano, Tourism Officer of Carles (09184685006/09166690596)days before the trip and everything went smooth and hassle free. Only 5 of us in the group pushed through and 2 of us travelled all the way from Bacolod taking the 615am trip (php 530/roundtrip ticket/pax). After an hour we went directly to Tagbak to get the 9 am Aircon Bus (php 183/pax) to Estancia. The yellow bus was labeled with “free Wifi on board” but wasn’t working at all. But anyways, the 3 hour trip went very smooth and comfortable. Since we arrived around 12 noon at Estancia downtown area, we got our take out lunch at Andok’s before proceeding to the fishing port. There, we were welcomed by our boatmen and started our journey to Islas de Gigantes.(the pumpboat could accomodate 15 pax for php 4500/whole trip inclusive of our roundtrip ride to Estancia-Gigantes plus island hopping without time limit).

The first four islands we stopped over were Pulopandan, Gigantes Sur’s Cabugao Gamay, Antonia’s beach and the Sandbar. They provided us with our personal tour guide/waiter/runner who went with us throughout the trip (tip ranges from a minimum of php 300 and up depending on the tourists’ generosity). Photo opps, swimming, rock climbing and snorkeling were just a few things these islands can offer. We headed off to Brgy. Asluman, Gigantes Norte while the sun sets where the Gigantes Hideaway Inn is located. The villagers there welcomed us with warm smiles and unselfish greetings (we were like celebrities then). The inn was still in the developing stage but the 2 star accomodation was way beyond our expectations since this this place only started a year ago and this was their first summer. Accomodation was only php 200/pax, electricity is up from 4pm til 11pm and is replaced by a generator overnight.

For your meals, the inn offers a wide array of seafoods especially scallops (the island is the scallops capital of Panay) at a very very affordable price. Before getting to bed, we had some few beers which were also available.

At 530am the following day, we fixed ourselves and headed of the to the lighthouse (parola)via a motorcycle for php 60/pax round trip. There, we were greeted by a Spanish old house and ground remains of the old parola. Few feet away is where a modern lighthouse was built and anyone could safely climb up to the tip to see the panoramic view of the gigantes norte island and Masbate on the other side. Afterwhich, we went back to the Inn and prepared ourselves for a caving adventure. We rode thru a motorcycle again for php 20/pax roundtrip to the foot of the mountain/cave. The caving took more than an hour. In this adventure, you had two options. It’s either you go back after reaching the mid part of the cave or continue towards the exit. Our group chose the exit way. With that, we had to do spelunking by climbing a vertical 2 storey wall without harness. But thanks to our guide who patiently taught us the detailed steps on how to do it. Fortunately, we all did it and went out through the exit way. I thought the challenge was over but going down wasn’t easy at all. We have to pass through sharp stones doing some rock climbing maneuvers. Twas tiring but the total experience was unforgettable! Then we headed back to our Inn to prepare for the last island to visit–the “Tangke”.

It took around 30 minutes from Norte to Tangke and upon seeing the place…Wow!!! was very first word I uttered. Twas very beautiful. We stayed there for an hour and went back to our Inn for our lunch. Our total expense for the tour was php 1500/pax (personal boat,accomodation,meals) and remember, we were only five in the group.

We left Gigantes at 3pm and arrived at Estancia at around 430pm just in time for the last Bus trip of the day back to Iloilo.

I strongly recommend Islas de Gigantes!!!

A piece of advise from our boatmen–avoid habagat seasons because seas are rough during these times

Arriving 11:05am, you’ll have a very slim chance of catching the regular passenger boat on the same day. I suggest spending the night at either Estancia or Carles on your first day then hire a pumpboat the next day to take you to Isla Gigantes and do the island tour. If you do spend the night in Gigantes, you can take the early morning boat back to the mainland on your third day.

Carles mainland is closer to Isla de Gigantes but there are more transportation options (pumpboats) in Estancia. If you’re commuting, Estancia is the only port with commuter boats that go to Isla de Gigantes. If renting your own boat (pakyaw), Carles is an excellent choice, though, passing through Estancia is also not that bad (especially because it is closer and more accessible if coming from Iloilo City).

I’ve been to Gigantes twice. On March 2012 I stayed in Paon Beach in Estancia and did a one-day island hopping to Gigantes. I went to the following islands: Gaket-Gaket, Bantigue, Cabugaw Gamay (rock climbing and snorkeling), Antonia (snorkeling), Uaydahon (snorkeling), Tinagong Baybay Daco, Tangke and Balbagon (though we didn’t dock at this island — just a drive-by/sail-by since we were running out of time). Early this week I went back with friends but stayed for 2 nights in Gigantes Norte (decent accommodation at Gigantes Hideaway Inn, they serve meals too and their tap water is potable, you just have to get used to the taste but it’s not that unpleasant). This time around, aside from the islands I already mentioned, we also visited: Tinagong Baybay Gamay, Cabugaw Daco and Balbagon (went down for photo-op and not just a sail-by as before). We went to the parola (lighthouse) via habal-habal (motorcycle) and we also saw how they shuck the deep-sea scallops. The most convenient way to get there is via Estancia. We tried via Carles but the trip is complicated since you ride a bus/van from Roxas to Balasan then jeep to Carles town proper then take a tricycle or habal-habal to the seaport (Bangcal? sorry I forgot the name of the port) if you fail to catch the bus from Roxas that goes directly to Carles seaport. There is a van that goes straight to Estancia from Roxas so its more convenient. Travel time from Estancia to Gigantes Norte is 30 minutes longer than from Carles mainland (or so the locals say, I can’t know for sure because it took us longer to get to Gigantes Norte from Carles mainland than when I came via Estancia, but maybe that’s because the weather was a bit bad when we went through Carles mainland). Contact Carles Tourism Officer — Joel Decano, 0918-4685006 if you want to stay in Gigantes Norte or want to go island hopping. Don’t expect him to answer your call but he will reply if you send him text — this is because they have erratic cellphone signals in the island. Sometimes it takes him half a day to reply to my text but he does reply, just wait. You can also stay overnight in some of the islands but you have to bring all your supplies, especially drinking water since not all the islands have fresh water. Not all the islands have electricity too — and those that have only have it at certain times of the day. The long and winding travel to Gigantes is not for the faint-hearted since the trip by land is a bit daunting (either via Roxas or Iloilo City–I tried both ways) and the sea could get rough — but I’ve seen it as calm as a swimming pool, even the open seas. After a punishing travel to the islands, you’ll get a most peaceful and beautiful reward and I’m sure if you have the time (no flight back home to catch), you’ll stay an extra day or two.

@Johann I’ve been there last week and the place is really beautiful. FYI: there is a place where you can stay for 150/head. The place is owned by Joel’s family (almost all boatman know him). Electricity is available from 3PM to 11PM and their gen set stays on until you need it. There is unlimited supply of water fresh from the mountains so you can have your shower as long as you want-free of charge. There is no wet market in the area though. They will serve whatever is the catch for the day. The good thing is, you will only pay the amount as priced by the fishermen. There is a “sari-sari” store a few steps away. The resort owner will not ask you for additional charges. You just need to give some amount to the “chef” a hundred or two will be enough.

Once you go for Island Hoping, you can even ask someone or even Joel to deliver your brunch in one of the islands there.

We hired a “pump boat” from Estancia going to Isla Gigantes. We paid 3,500. This is good for a “round trip” travel, including Island Hopping. In our case, we visited 4 Islands and a cave. We hired the pump boat for more than 24 hours for only 3,500.

@Kirsten…. youre welcome… you can just put tent in there on the shore or atop of plateau overlooking the beach in Antonio if you wish to spend the night …( you can see Marcus post on Beach Antonia just recently) as long as its strong enough to withstand the Gush .. but I’ m sure most tents do….you can watch you-tube for tips on how to survive the camping on places where there’s no access to food or water and many things…best to spend it with someone else too and you know i prefer to nightcamp during the Full-Moon( new Moon)we will have bigger moon on the last days of July…. and when the sky is clear… much better…

@Kirsten… i suggest you would eat at the sea food restaurant in San Dionisio..its very very delicious (preska) and very very cheap …try their sizzling squid…. very tasty and sinigang na tanguigi… its just stood right beside the Sea Plus–Fish Factory…in Poblacion … In Estancia… Bayuyan has plenty of restaurant too… where I used to eat sinigang na shrimp….hope youre not allergic to sea foods

@ristof… make an itinerary..after you have fix the date of trip and duration, quantify the expenses and things to bring… if you take it by plane… its like 1500… by sea..its like the same then…youll get here Iloilo City as entry point… you’ll stay at least one day to simmer down especially when your arrival is in the afternoon… youll stay in the City pension house… that would be like 300 something … youll have party out on the night time 8pm-12am… and you return home in the morning 1am… at dawn 6am you do some jog in bordwalk… and have the breakfast at 8am and check out…as soon youll get to Tagbak Terminal at 10am and ride the Bus to Estancia your arrival is like 1pm,, youll take lunch … you are in once-a-day boat to Gigantes… around 2pm… and get there around 4pm…you still have time to move around and enjoy the beaches… and then at dusk..you’ll buy foods in some stores…and at night… you started to put up your tent and campfire… and you need whiskey to kick in you way to sleep… and so on …

I would recommend you guys to stay at paon beach resort..the place is nice and they got a swimmin pool..its in estancia…they arrange boat rental for groups…cost aroud 6000 pesos for a day tour around the islands….

Im planning to go there with a friend next week Saturday and Sunday, I would like to know the schedule of commutters boat in the morning. I have read there is only one schedule of departure at 2pm in Estancia. I would like to know if we can have walk-in in the Gigantes hideaway tourist inn for the accomodation(because in the net there is no reservation) How much the Fan room. This is our first time and Im impress how did your budgeting. Thank you so much hope you can help me. God bless

A trip to Iloilo won’t be complete without going on an island-hopping adventure in Carles, home of Gigantes Islands. I first visited Gigantes Islands six years ago when it was starting to get popular among local tourists. I remember lots of boats were docked on the shore. Pre-pandemic, it’s likely that you will be competing with crowds for space here.

During pandemic, only a few tourists would venture here at the same time. When I visited in 2022, only two groups of tourists were in the island. It was nice to see the island in its peaceful and relaxing state. However, I’m hoping that the pandemic will be over soon so that the community, who are closely tied to tourism, can get back to their previous livelihood.

Gigantes Islands is probably one of the most diverse destinations in the Philippines. Located in the northernmost municipality of Carles, Iloilo , it is known for its rich marine and coastal resources, limestone karst and caves, beautiful beaches, and long-stretch of sandbars. With 10 islands and islets, there is something for every kind of traveler.

You probably know this already but Gigantes Islands is said to be the Scallops Capital of the Philippines .

If you haven’t been to Carles, you are definitely missing out! Gigantes is an ideal place to visit for seafood lovers. Some local specialties include crabs, shrimps and different kinds of fishes, which are fished from right off the coast. The island is known particularly for its scallops that abound in the deep waters.

Although fisherfolks sell scallops for only 1 peso per piece , I suggest paying extra because scallops aren’t easy to collect. Let’s thank them for giving us a chance to sample fresh seafood.

The main tourist spots in Gigantes Islands can be visited in one whole day, but I highly suggest to allot two days for island-hopping. Majority of island tours in Gigantes includes visit to all famous tourist spots but only about 30 minutes per destination is allowed.

Cabugao Gamay Island

Cabugao Gamay is the crown jewel of Gigantes Islands, thus it is the most photographed of all islands. The viewing deck located on a hill on the northern end of the island is where thousands of photographs were taken. Do not miss to go there because it offers the most picturesque view of the whole Cabugao Gamay and the sea.

Take as many photos as you like in the viewing deck but do not forget to explore the rest of the island. The center portion has cluster of coconut palms, which provide excellent shade if it’s too hot. The gorgeous white sand beach on the island is not to be missed as well.

Tangke Saltwater Lagoon

Tangke Saltwater Lagoon is where you will see a bit of El Nido or Coron in Gigantes Islands. The lagoon with brackish body of water surrounded by massive limestone rock formations look exactly like the ones you see in Palawan. This is a popular tourist spot so you will probably share it with many people. If you are on a private tour, you can request to go here before the tour boats arrive to appreciate the beauty of the place more.

Bantigue Island

Bantigue Island is another popular lunch stops in Gigantes Islands. Know for its long and wide golden sandbar, the island is only about 5 minutes away from Cabugao Gamay. If you’re on a private tour, you can request to go to Bantigue Island in the late afternoon. I swear the sunset view here is amazing!

Antonia Beach

Antonia Beach is actually my second favorite destination in Gigantes Islands. Almost the same feature as Cabugao Gamay, there are massive rock formations at the southern end and coconut palms lining the center of the beach. Although this is a popular lunch stop, do not miss to swim here because the water is so clear. If you can, stay overnight at one of the tents. I have no doubt the sunset and sunrise views here are divine!

Antonia Beach is sometimes referred to as Antonia Island. This is incorrect because it is actually part of Gigantes Sur.

Pulupandan Islet

Pulupandan Islet reminds me a bit of Naked Island of Siargao . A lone coconut tree is standing in the middle, but for the most part, this sandy and rocky islet in the middle of the ocean is bare. There isn’t anything to see on this islet at all, but I think that is the beauty of it.

Gigantes Norte Island Lighthouse

Gigantes Norte Island Lighthouse isn’t part of the usual island hopping tour and would be something you can request for private tours. If you’re a fan of landscape photography, you have to visit this place in the afternoon. The sunset view and entire place look epic!

The Philippines has two main seasons – the dry season (November to April) and the wet season (May to October). The dry season is by far the most popular time for travel for tourists. Although the wet season doesn’t mean everyday downpours, I suggest to travel during dry season in Gigantes Islands to better enjoy island-hopping activities.

Via Roxas City

The fastest way to get to Carles from Manila is via Roxas City, the main gateway to the Province of Capiz. Although Carles is part of Iloilo, this municipality is closer to Capiz so it’s better to go this route if you don’t have time for long travels. It will take less than an hour from Manila to Roxas City by plane. From Roxas City Airport, take a tricycle to the bus terminal. Then, take a bus (Ceres Bus) or a van going to Carles. Travel time is around 1.5 hours.

Via Iloilo City

From the Iloilo International Airport, take a taxi to Tagbak Bus Terminal in Jaro. From there, take a bus (Ceres Bus) or van bound for Carles. Travel time is about 3-4 hours.

Once in Carles Bus Terminal, take a tricycle to Bancal Port , where a tourism office is set up to facilitate island-hopping tours for tourists. If you booked an accommodation in Gigantes Norte Island, you can board the passenger boat which leaves at 10 AM daily. Travel time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes and one way fare is 100 pesos. The same boat leaves Gigantes Norte Island daily at 2 PM from Langob Beach back to Bancal Port.

On my first visit in Gigantes Islands, my friends and I stayed at one of the homestays in Gigantes Norte. It was super basic but the local family who hosted us were great! I would highly recommend staying at one of these homestays if you are on a budget or just want to experience local culture.

On my second visit, our group stayed at Solina Beach and Nature Resort for two nights. I would personally recommend it if you prefer a beachfront accommodation and resort amenities like pool, breakfast buffet and massage service. Do not miss to catch the sunset and order cocktails after a whole day of island-hopping. Overnight rate ranges from 3,000 pesos to 10,000 pesos, depending on the type of room, number of guests and season.

Here’s a travel tip for you. Since private charters are expensive (8,000 pesos per boat), join an island-hopping tour for two consecutive days. Yes, it will be the same itinerary, same food and same cost. But if you do this, you can do all your picture taking on the first day and then enjoy and savor the sights the next day.

The joiners day tour rate of Gigantes Islands Tours and Services is 999 pesos per person. This includes lunch (unli scallops yey!), island hopping (5 islands), tour guide fee, environmental fee, and all entrance fees. Tour starts at 9 AM and ends at 4 PM.

Gigantes Island’s sheer isolation and laidback atmosphere beckon every artistic soul to preserve its beauty in film, pixels, or paint. Gigantes Island is actually a group of islands situated in Carles, Northern Iloilo. It is studded with palm-fringed islands with dramatic rock formations lapped by denim blue water, rough-hewn coves, jade-colored lagoons surrounded by towering karts, and talcum-powder fine sandbars.

Due to its blissful location (it is part of the Coral Triangle), Gigantes Island boasts of biologically diverse marine resources. The main livelihood here is fishing. It’s the kind of place where you’ll eat the best fresh seafood of your life on the beach with your feet in the sand.

Gigantes Island is accessible from Iloilo , Capiz , and Aklan (Caticlan and Kalibo). Travelers need to make their way to Carles or Estancia first. Then from there, there are 2 ports where they can take a boat to Gigantes Islands – Bancal Port and Estancia Port. Read my Gigantes Island travel guide and itinerary below for further details.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT GIGANTES ISLAND

The best months to visit is during summer season, late March to early June. If traveling during the rainy season, always check the weather updates before proceeding for your safety.

Electricity in Gigantes Island:

Generators are typically used by resorts or guesthouses, and there’s a certain time when electricity is on, depending on where you are staying. Make sure to charge your gadgets and camera while power is still on. It is also best to bring fully charged power banks, as back up.

ATM in Gigantes Island: There’s no ATM in the island. Stack up cash before embarking on your trip, as cash is the mode of payment in Gigantes Island. There are plenty of ATMs in Roxas City, Kalibo, and Iloilo City.

Safety in Gigantes Island: Gigantes Island is pretty safe for tourists. But please follow and respect the local rules to avoid accidents. Always wear life jacket while on island hopping tour for your safety. In case of emergency though, the major hospitals are quite far. You have to travel all the way to major cities like Roxas or Iloilo.

HOW TO GET TO GIGANTES ISLAND

Gigantes Island is located in Carles town, in the Northern Iloilo. Here’s how to get to Gigantes Island. You can fly non-stop to Roxas (Capiz), Iloilo, or Caticlan. Then head to either Bancal Port (1.5 hours to Gigantes Norte Island) or Estancia Port (2 hours to Gigantes Island). Bancal Port is the preferred jumping-off point to Gigantes Island as it is nearer.

ROXAS, CAPIZ TO GIGANTES ISLAND

Roxas City is the province of Capiz is my preferred airport because it is nearer to Carles, the jumping-off point to Gigantes Island, compared to Iloilo or Caticlan.

1.Fly to Roxas Airport. Several airlines fly from Manila, Clark, and Cebu to Roxas.

Manila to Roxas Flights: RESERVE HERE
Cebu to Roxas Flights: RESERVE HERE
Clark to Roxas Flights: RESERVE HERE

2.Take a tricycle to the Roxas City Integrated Bus Terminal. Fare is roughly ₱150 ($3,SGD 4, MYR 12). Transit time is about 10-15 minutes.

3.Take a Ceres bus for ₱75 (SGD, MYR) or van for ₱65 to Estancia. Travel time is about 1.5 – 2 hours. First trip is 6:00 AM, last trip is 6:00 PM

4. If taking the van, the van can drop you off directly at Bancal Port. But if you’re taking the bus, once you get off at Estancia bus terminal, you need to take a tricycle for ₱50 ($1, SGD 1.41, MYR 4) per person or habal-habal/motorcycle for ₱100 ($2, SGD 3, MYR 8) to Bancal Port in Carles, which is the preferred jumping-off point to Gigantes Island. Travel time is roughly 30 minutes. If you opt to disembark at Estancia Port, which is nearer, fare is ₱10 ($0.19, SGD 0.28, MYR 0.86) and it will only take about 10 minutes.

5.At Bancal Port, pay the environmental fee for ₱75 ($1.5, SGD 2, MYR 6) at the Tourism Office

6. From Bancal Port or Estancia Port, you have the following options to get to Gigantes Island. Travel time is about 1.5 hours:

6.1. You can charter a boat to take you around Gigantes Island. See boat rental fee for Gigantes island hopping below.

6.2. You can join a group tour to Gigantes Island, click the link below.

GIGANTES ISLAND HOPPING TOUR: RESERVE HERE

6.3. You can ride the passenger boat from Bancal Port or Estancia Port to Lango Beach in Gigantes Norte, where most of the homestays are located. Then, from there, you can hire a boat for island hopping around Gigantes Island. The passenger boat leaves Bancal Port at 10:00 AM and arrives at Gigantes Norte at 11:30 AM. Then the same boat departs for Bancal Port at 2:00 PM and arrives at 3:30 PM. Fare is ₱100 ($2) and travel time is about hour. There’s also a public boat that leaves Estancia Port to Gigantes Norte every day at 1:00 PM, fare is ₱80 ($1.56) and travel time is about 2 hours. The same boat leaves Gigantes Norte for Estancia Port at 1:00 PM. If you choose this option, you need at least 2-3 days stay in Gigantes Norte and do the island hopping around Gigantes Island.

If you miss the public boat, you can take the shuttle express from Bancal Port to Gigantes Norte. Fare is ₱300 ($6). Here’s the schedule:

Monday to Thursday – 7:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 3:00 PM, 4:30 PM
Friday to Sunday – 8:30 AM, 12:30 PM

6.4. Ride a public boat to Lango Beach in Gigantes Norte then hire a boat to Antonia Island or Cabugao Gamay Island and stay there overnight. If you plan to do this, you can make your way first to Lago Beach in Gigantes Norte (see directions above), then from there, hire a boat to take you to the island where you plan to stay overnight. For the island hopping in Gigantes Island, you need to rent a boat.

Iloilo to gigantes island.

If coming from Manila, Clark or Cebu, you can also fly non-stop to Iloilo Airport. If coming from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) you can also fly direct to Iloilo via Manila. Click the links below to find flights. Though Iloilo is farther compared to Roxas, there are more flights to Iloilo and they are cheaper. So, if you choose this option, follow the directions on how to to get to Gigantes Island from Iloilo:

2. From Iloilo Airport, you may take a bus or van to Iloilo City.

4.Take a Ceres Bus ( ₱190) or van ( ₱200) to Estancia or Carles. Travel time is approximately 3-4 hours.

5.Alight at Balasan, Estancia and take a take a tricycle ( ₱50) or habal-habal/motorcycle ( ₱100- ₱150) to Bancal Port in Carles.

6.At Bancal Port, pay the environmental fee ( ₱75) at the Tourism Office.

7.At Bancal Port, you can choose from the following options to get to Gigantes Island. Travel time is about 1.5 hours:

Join a group tour to Gigantes Island.
Hire a boat to go island hopping in Gigantes Island. This is ideal for those wanting to do a DIY Gigantes Island Tour. See the Gigantes Island Boat Rental rates below.
Ride the public boat from Bancal Port or Estancia Port to Lango Beach in Gigantes Norte, where homestays abound. At Gigantes Norte, charter a boat for Gigantes Island hopping. The public boat departs Bancal Port at 10:00 AM and reaches Gigantes Norte at about 11:30 AM. The same boat leaves for Bancal Port at 2:00 PM and arrives at 3:30 PM. There’s also a public boat from Estancia Port to Gigantes Norte at 1:00 PM. You need at least 2 -3 days to stay in Gigantes Norte and go island hopping in Gigantes Island.

If you miss the public boat, you can ride the shuttle express that travels between Bancal Port and Gigantes Norte for ₱300 ($6). Here’s the schedule:

Take a public boat to Lango Beach in Gigantes Norte then charter a boat to Antonia Island or Cabugao Gamay Island for your overnight stay. If you opt to stay in either of the said islands, you can go to Lago Beach in Gigantes Norte (see directions above) by public boat first, then from there, hire a boat to bring you to the island where you plan to stay overnight. For the island hopping in Gigantes Island, you need to charter a boat.

We went with Las Islas for our group tour, the package already includes lunch, water, entrance fees, and tour guide. You can check the rates and book through the link below. This is best for solo travelers, and a party of 2 or three persons.

2.rent a boat at bancal port or estancia port.

If you decide to do it on your own, you can rent a boat. This is best for a group of 4 persons up, you can share the cost of the boat rental, guide fee, and entrance fees.

Here’s the public boat schedule from Bancal Port and Estancia Port to Gigantes Norte, if you plan to stay there overnight where most homestays are located. Then from there, hire a boat for island hopping around Gigantes Island.

Important: Don’t forget to pay the Environmental Fee before proceeding because the caretakers at the islands you’ll be visiting during island hopping in Gigantes might ask you for the environmental fee ticket before you are allowed to enter.

PLACES TO VISIT IN GIGANTES ISLAND

Gigantes Island is riddled with dramatic limestone cliffs, palm-fringed sand lapped by swirling mix of aquamarine water, and tropical island clichés. Easygoing travelers will surely enjoy the laidback pursuits here. Here are some of the most popular tourist attractions in Gigantes Island, typically included in the island hopping tour:

1. BANTIGUE SANDBAR

Entrance Fee: FREE

This beauty only emerges when the tide is low. I prefer visiting Bantigue Island during sunset, as the tangerine light makes this sandbar more dramatic. But for most package tours in Gigantes Island, this is the usual first stop, perhaps because of the maddening waves and the strong current in the afternoon.

2.ANTONIA ISLAND

Entrance Fee: ₱40 ($0.78, SGD 1.13, MYR 3.42, € 0.73)
Tent rental (good for 2): ₱250 ($5, SGD 7, MYR 21, €5)
Camping and room reservation: Danilo Cruz +63 947 388 4070, Patroceno Mahipos +63 919 268 5896

Antonia Island is another popular tourist spot in Gigantes Island. It has coarse, cream sand lapped by azure water. You can also climb the rock formations here for a scenic view of the surroundings. It is the best spot for snorkeling in Gigantes Island. If you forgot to bring your own snorkeling gears, you can rent googles (₱50 – $1) and snorkeling gear (₱100 – $2) here.

Antonia Island is also known for its cheap seafood. You can indulge on scallops for ₱1 ($0.019) per piece and rocky oysters for ₱200 ($4) per strainer!

Camping and overnight stay is allowed here. You can rent a tent with foam and mattress for ₱250 ($5) per head. Fan room housed in nipa huts are also available for ₱800 ($16) per night, good for 2 persons, and ₱1,200 ($23) for 4 people.

3. TANGKE LAGOON

Entrance Fee: ₱20 ($0.39, SGD 0.56, MYR 1.71, € 0.37)

Tangke Lagoon reminds me of Coron , El Nido , and Caramoan . You know the kind of place where the lagoon with green and turquoise water blend beautifully and blissfully clad by towering karts. It’s the perfect place for photo op in Gigantes Island and flying your drone, just be extra careful you might bump into the karts.

4. CABUGAO GAMAY

Entrance Fee: ₱50 ($1, SGD 1.41, MYR 4, € 0.91)

Ride a taxi going to Tagbak Terminal in Jaro District.

Guests should note that the sequence of the islands to visit may not be followed chronologically depending on the sea condition.

Terms and conditions: 1. 30% Deposit thru bank and please do send us a copy of the deposit slip on our page for records and for booking confirmation. 2. Please be advised that since it is a joiner tours everyone should be expected to arrive on time. 3. 100% refund on your deposit if in case the tour gets cancelled due to a bad weather condition. 4. 50% refund on your deposit if you missed out your flight to Roxas or Iloilo and that way you can’t join the tour. 5.In line with the itinerary, it may change from time to time depending on the weather condition and there are some islands that cant be visited if the sea condition is bad so expect that chances are; we will not able to follow the itinerary. 6.The captain of the boat and the tour operator has the right to cancel or terminate the contract even though you are already in the island if there’s any unusual behavior including too much complain that can cause a delay to our tour. 7. Traveling through Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) during COVID-19 crisis

If you are planning to travel outside or across the Philippines post-COVID-19 Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), here are the guidelines implemented by the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) adopted by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) from the new protocols set by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

These protocols aim to prevent further spread of COVID-19. The guidelines below must be strictly observed:

1. Wear face masks when inside the airport facility

2. Submit yourself to a mandatory body temperature check

3. Strictly observe social distancing measures especially at all queuing points inside and outside the airport complex. Comply with the “one-seat apart policy”.

4. With the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) taking the lead, security procedures shall be done through a “no contact means” but not limited to the use of walk-through x-ray machines, portable scanners, handheld metal detectors, and the like, effectively limiting pat-down or manual frisking to exceptional instances or situations.

5. Only passengers with valid travel documents and confirmed bookings for the day will be allowed to enter the airport facility.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS NEEDED:
a. Passport b. visa (for international travels) c. confirmed flight bookings d. medical certificate (see details below) e. travel authority (see details how to obtain travel authority)

6. Continuous disinfection of all NAIA facilities especially those used for flight operations. These include, among others, aerobridges, baggage conveyors, check-in counters, immigration, customs, and other help desks. Disinfection activities are also done extensively on other airport facilities and equipment such as x-ray machines and trays, inspection tables, pushcarts, wheelchairs, and other frequently touched surfaces.

7. Foot baths shall remain in all entry and exit points of passengers and airport personnel, including boarding bridges and/or similar areas for passenger embarkation/disembarkation to and from the aircraft.

8. Safety precaution posters and other health guidelines shall be displayed at noticeable places in the NAIA Terminals. Alert bulletins shall be made through the airport information boards and other display systems and through public announcements in MIAA’s official social media sites.

9. As required by the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ), all passengers that are departing and arriving shall be required to electronically fill-out Health Declaration Form and Passenger Locator Forms for straightforward contact tracing. How to obtain travel authority

If you are traveling for leisure or vacation— YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO SECURE TRAVEL AUTHORITY as of today.

Who can obtain travel authority:

1) You’re leaving your province to attend to a family or medical emergency.

2) You’re leaving Metro Manila to attend to a family or medical emergency.

3) You are a “locally stranded individual” going back home to the province or to Metro Manila—a student, a worker, or any person unable to go home because of the ECQ.

Steps to obtain travel authority:

STEP 1: Obtain a medical health certificate from your Municipal Health Office.

STEP 2: Present this to the support desk of your city or municipal police station.

STEP 3: Wait for a notification through SMS or email, once your travel authority is ready for pickup or delivery.

How to obtain medical certificate

Obtain a medical certificate from a hospital. Present this to the help desk in your city or municipal health office. In my hometown, it is just about 12 minutes. You have to pay for the fee and then get your clearance afterwards.
