Best Slim Car Seat for Travel? Graco SlimFit All-In-One Convertible Car Seat Review

We're right in the thick of the holiday season which (at least for us) means lots of travel. Now that we've got two kids we have double the amount of packing and planning going into our trips. Whether we're driving or flying, one thing that matters most to me is the car seats we will be traveling with. I've partnered with Graco to show you their new Graco SlimFit  Space Saving All-In-One Convertible Car Seat and why it's a great slim car seat for holiday travel!

Slim Car Seat

2023 UPDATE: The specific model I am showing is no longer available on the Graco site since it's had some updates over the years. You can see the most recent SlimFit here on Amazon . Thankfully many of the features are still exactly the same.

Graco SlimFit All in One Car Seat Review

Original review: I received the Graco SlimFit in the Camelot colorway. I love the rich tones and the plush seat looks very comfortable. Because it's an all-in-one seat, it can be used from infancy through when your child needs a belt-positioning booster seat.

Graco SlimFit

As you can see, the seat has a large range of height. Graco's Simply Safe Adjust Harness System makes it easy to adjust the height with just one hand. This would really come in handy if you're switching vehicles while traveling or using the seat on an airplane. You don't need to fuss with the harness or adjust the height with the convenient harness system.

Graco SlimFit

At 19.75" wide the Graco SlimFit saves space while still maintaining room for your growing child. It is one of the more slim car seats on the market. It has rotating cup holders that make the seat 10% slimmer. If you have multiple children or need to pack a lot in your backseat (think holiday gifts and luggage!) the SlimFit would be a good choice to conserve precious backseat space. Here's a quick video I took to show how easy it is to adjust the cup holders.

The convenience of this narrow seat would also make it perfect for a flight. I can't be the only one who finds airline seats really small, especially when you're hauling a car seat. The SlimFit is FAA approved and won't have you fighting over precious seat space on a plane.

Graco SlimFit Installation

Installation of the car seat is simple whether you're using it rear-facing or forward-facing. Graco's InRight LATCH system makes it easy to click the latches into place and get a secure fit. You can also install the car seat using your seat belt, which I prefer to do. My daughter fits comfortably rear-facing. I can't stress how easy it is to install this seat-perfect for when you're traveling and need to move the seat as well as luggage and your kids.

graco slimfit

The car seat has soft plush supports to keep infants comfortable and as they get older you can easily remove them. The seat cover is machine-washable and is easy to access without removing the harness. I find this to be a great feature because we've had food spill a few times and it's nice to remove the cover to wash it.

graco slimfit

She loves putting things into the cup holders and then taking them back out!

graco slimfit

Did you know that 80% of car seats in the United States are installed incorrectly? Graco makes the installation of the SlimFit simple with its easy-to-read level. If you have to move the seat from your vehicle to an airplane to a rental car, you'll know you have it installed correctly every time with this handy level.

graco slimfit

I love the 4-position recline the SlimFit offers. It's perfect for infants who need to be reclined more and can be brought upright as they grow. Graco outlines which recline levels are for rear-facing and forward-facing too, to take out any guesswork.

SlimFit weight recommendations

The SlimFit is recommended for children 5-40 pounds rear-facing, 20-65 pounds forward-facing, and 30-100 pounds in the high back belt-positioning booster stage. Here's my son in the forward-facing position. As you can see I raised the headrest (super simple, with one hand!) to accommodate for his height.

graco slimfit

We're in a rental car right now and here you can see the backseat with the SlimFit. Three car seats wouldn't fit across the bench in this Nissan Sentra, but you couldn't definitely fit two and have extra space.

graco slimfit sedan

This car seat was engineered and crash tested to meet or exceed US standards and has been side impact tested with the built-in 5-point harness system. I feel like both of my kids are very safe in the SlimFit which is a necessity with all of the car time we'll be putting in the next month or so.

graco slimfit installation

Overall I really appreciate the narrower design of the SlimFit, the simple latch system that allows for easy installation, and the harness system which makes it so easy to adjust the height of the headrest and harness with one hand. I'd recommend it for holiday travel, especially to families with multiple children that need narrower car seats! It's also going to be a great option for flying and renting a car that will likely have a smaller backseat than your regular vehicle.

BUY IT: You can purchase this Graco slim car seat on Amazon.com  (usually for less!).

Disclaimer: I received the Graco SlimFit at no cost to facilitate an honest review. As always, all opinions are my own.

YES!!! I love the narrower design too!! Nothing is more frustrating than finding our your seat doesn't fit well in your car!! Not every parent has a big vehicle lol!! We are also big Graco fans!! Their seats are the easiest to use and install from what I've seen and dealt with!!

Our analysis and test results.

The well-known Graco parent's love started in 1953 when the metal fabrication company brought a new engineer on board to expand their business. Inspired by a coworker's story of soothing a crabby baby with an outdoor patio glider, Rex Thomas and David Saint created a unique baby swing . This design catapulted the Graco company into the baby gear world. Graco produces strollers , family favorite car seats , and more.

Performance Comparison

With better sensor results and a higher crash test analysis, this is a seat to consider if this metric is first on your mind. All safety seats in the United States must adhere to federal guidelines; therefore, all seats in this review should be considered safe.

We purposefully ran a faster test with a more modern-day sled to push these seats a little harder than the standard.

The SlimFit and the Graco 4Ever both performed well in our crash...

With this method, we hoped to find exceptional seats in this lineup that could offer an additional safety margin. With some of the lowest G-forces recorded for the HIC and chest clip sensors, the SlimFit is one of those seats.

Ease of Install - LATCH

This Graco is one of the easiest Gracos to install using LATCH in this review. It has push-style LATCH connectors on a flexible strap, no lock-off, and a level indicator on one side only.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review - the slimfit is narrow enough to reach over the top to connect the...

The recline range is limited, making it more of a challenge to get it exactly right during installation. It is a ball-style indicator, so some patience is needed to let it settle and determine whether it is in the right zone.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review - the slimfit recline adjustment is a handle under the foot that is...

Because it is only on one side, this can further inhibit the process from going swiftly. The recline handle is easy to pull, and the rotation is smooth at least.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review - the slack is easy to pull out on the latch for the slimfit.

The connectors work well and with little effort. The strap slack pulls in easily and doesn't require much effort. It is straightforward to thread and felt snug in all directions for the wiggle test.

The SlimFit has our preferred push-style design that is easy to use.

Forward-facing installation on the SlimFit uses the same connectors but no longer uses the level indicator. There are two options for reclining in forward-facing, and the handle is also easy to use in this configuration. Threading the belt is straightforward, and we had no problems making connections or tightening the strap. The process was quick, and the final install was stable, making it a potential contender if you need to move a seat frequently.

The SlimFit has a color-coded sticker indicator that is easy to...

Ease of Install - Belt

Installing the SlimFit using a vehicle belt is somewhat harder than LATCH, but it still performed better than the average seat in our review.

Installing the SlimFit in the Rear-facing position has a ball level indicator on one side, and there is no color coding or lock-off on this model. With a lack of lock-off, getting the belt tightened was hard, resulting in less stability than some of the competition. The recline handle is on the front of the seat, so in rear-facing, you have to adjust this before installation because otherwise, you can't grab it.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review - the slimfit back padding unsnapped and flips forward for easy access...

You must fold fabric out of the way to access the belt pathway, as it keeps falling back into play. The path isn't great, and the shoulder portion of the belt interferes with the cup holder. Trying to tighten the belt causes the front to try to raise, but luckily, the acceptable angle range is very forgiving. Stability is okay; it passed the wiggle test, but we would want more for our kids. For this reason, we'd choose LATCH over the belt if necessary. We got a tighter install in the second test car, so some of this might be car design-dependent.

Forward facing has no angle indicator, color-coding, or lock-off. Threading the belt is straightforward, and the seat weight makes it easy to manipulate the seat during installation. It takes a little energy and effort to tighten the belt since there is no lock-off, and the pathway results in an awkward pull. Getting the seat reasonably tight in the second test car was easier than the first, but both passed the wiggle test. Overall, it is average to install and for stability.

Ease of Use

In our convertible car seat testing, the SlimFit also scored above average for ease of use.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review - the slimfit buckle and chest clip are average and require a little...

The harness on this Graco is much like the other Gracos we tested. It has a standard buckle with an easy-to-push square buckle. The prongs require more oompf to push in, but it isn't hard. The chest clip mechanism is on the left side strap, but it functions like those working from the center.

The tightening strap on the SlimFit is more challenging to pull, and there is some resistance, indicating it is getting hung up somewhere. Loosening is easier without resistance, so whatever is causing tightening trouble is not a problem for pulling the harness loose.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review - the height adjustment on the slimfit has ten possible levels.

This Graco has a non-rethread style height adjustment with ten height options. It has an easy-to-move three-position buckle with a third location suitable for older or larger children. The height assembly moves smoothly with no trouble in all ten positions.

To keep the SlimFit LATCH connectors out of the way, there are side...

LATCH Storage

The LATCH storage are basic side locations for clipping the connectors. Both are easy to locate and use, but they are rudimentary, leaving any additional webbing loose.

Much like others, the cover on this Graco doesn't come off as easily as we'd like, but it isn't the worst in the group. The material is easier to put back on than take off, which is nicer than some. There are a few loops and hooks in small places, which could be challenging for those with larger fingers.

Comfort/Quality

The SlimFit earned a higher result for comfort and quality than most seats, and it is impressive given the budget-friendly price that often translates to less in this metric.

The fabric is average and didn't elicit strong feelings either way. It isn't exceptionally soft, nor is it rough or uncomfortable. The infant insert is a jersey material that feels breathable for hotter days and sweaty baby heads. This material is also soft, with head padding about six inches wide.

The SlimFit fabric is average and neither ultra-soft nor rough.

This seat has good all-around padding that feels better than average memory foam. Everything lines up and looks finished with an attention to detail. The fabric and padding roll over the seat edge to better support longer or bare legs with no pressure points.

The shell is less open and exposed than the other Gracos we tested. But the plastic still feels cheaper than most, with loads of warning and instruction stickers adorning the sides.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review - the slimfit has dual cup holders that work well enough, but we...

Because this product is marketed as "slim," the cup holders on either side can fold in. Both feel sturdy enough, even if they are moveable.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review - the slimfit is lightweight for the group and relatively narrow but...

Weight/Size

The SlimFit isn't as slim as you probably hope if your goal is a narrow seat, with a width of 18.6. This measurement is the group's average and doesn't stand out enough to be a boastworthy claim. Given that the seats in our lineup have a few closer to 16.9 inches, this average width is not slim.

However, it is somewhat light for the group at 18.5 lbs, especially if you look at the top-scoring seats we tested. The average weight for the group is 24.3 lbs, with the highest being over 30 lbs. The weight of the SlimFit might make it one for those who plan to travel frequently.

graco slimfit 3-in-1 convertible car seat review

Should You Buy the Graco SlimFit 3-in-1?

The SlimFit is a budget-friendly seat with better crash test analysis and comfy padding. This reasonably priced option is easy to install and has easy-to-use features parents will love. Given the high cost of some of the competition, this seat offers a lot for not a lot of money, making it one we recommend.

3 in 1 Convertible Car Seat by Graco

graco slim fit travel bag

The Graco® SlimFit3™ LX 3-in-1 Car Seat is Graco’s slimmest design that fits 3 car seats across, saving space in your back seat without compromising on the safety you trust and the features you need.

This narrow all-in-one car seat grows with your child (width 42.4 cm / 16.7 inches) from rear-facing harness (2.2 kg – 18 kg) to forward-facing harness (10 kg – 30 kg) to highback booster (18.1 kg – 45 kg)..

Graco tested this lightweight 3-across car seat in every configuration, to help ensure your growing family can fit in your vehicle, even with children of different ages who ride in different modes, or when paired with select other Graco car seats. Integrated belt lock-off makes for easy vehicle seat belt installation in forward-facing mode, and allows you to position your seats to maximize space with 3 across. Graco’s exclusive push-button InRight™ LATCH provides an easy, one-second attachment with an audible click to help ensure secure installation.

Graco made thoughtful design choices to make the SlimFit3 easy to adjust with 3 car seats in the back seat. The No-Rethread Simply Safe Adjust™ Harness System allows you to adjust the height of the headrest and harness to 10 positions with just one motion for just the right fit. Easily adjust the 4-position recline for a better installation and a comfortable ride. The Rapid Remove cover comes off in 60 seconds, without uninstalling the seat or removing the harness, and is machine washable.

Plus, the SlimFit3™ is slim enough to fit 3 across, but spacious enough to keep your growing child comfy.

Breathable mesh AirFlow channels provide improved ventilation to keep your child cool and comfortable. Two cup holders are designed to work with the three-across configuration to keep drinks and snacks close at hand. Fuss-free harness storage pockets conveniently hold the harness out of the way while your child gets in and out. Removable, plush head and body inserts help to keep your infant feeling cradled and comfortable. The steel-reinforced frame provides strength and durability for years of use, and EPS energy-absorbing foam provides effective impact energy management. This car seat is Graco® ProtectPlus Engineered™ to help protect in frontal, side, rear, and rollover crashes.

Is slimfit r129 right for me.

SlimFit R129 keeps your family going by adapting to every stage of your little one’s life. SlimFit R129 is a 2-in-1 convertible car seat that can be used from birth all the way up to 145cm or approximately 12 years of age. This upgraded version of our original SlimFit R44 convertible car seat meets the EU’s R129 standards which means it has undergone more side impact testing, is categorized by height instead of weight, and keeps your child rearward facing longer. Use rearward facing from birth up to 105cm (approx. 4 years) and then use forward facing as a highback booster from 100 to 145cm (approx. 3.5 to 12 years).

Keeping your little one safe has never been easier. With the TrueShield™ Side Impact Protection pod and Safety Surround™ Side Impact Protection, this seat works hard to protect your precious cargo in the event of a collision. The easy-to-adjust 5-point harness keeps your rearward child secured in this convertible car seat. Installation is easier with the integrated belt lock-off that confirms the car seat is snug and secure in your vehicle.

SlimFit R129 is designed to adapt as your baby becomes a toddler and then a big kid. The no-rethread harness and 10-position headrest easily adjust together. As an added bonus, the side wings of the car seat simultaneously expand as the headrest is raised. When your little one no longer needs the harness, it stores away neatly thanks to the integrated harness storage.

SlimFit R129’s 6-position recline is ideal for both rearward and forward facing kids. Smoothly adjust the recline with one hand and use the optional newborn inserts for extra protection and comfort. To ensure the longevity of your convertible car seat, the covers and pads are machine washable to make sure every ride, from hospital to big kid, is as clean as the first.

Safety - R129 certified - Interchangeable TrueShield™ side impact protection pod works to reduce side impact - Safety Surround™ Side Impact Protection wraps around your child for enhanced protection - 5-point harness that easily adjusts with one hand - Integrated belt lock-off

What is the difference between SlimFit R44 and SlimFit R129? There are currently 2 different car seat standards in the EU. R44 (legally known as ECE R44/04) car seats are divided into groups based on weight, with some covering multiple groups.  SlimFit R44 is based on these standards.

SlimFit R129 meets the new R129 (legally known as ECE R129) standards. The main differences in these standards are that car seats are based on your child’s height, undergo more side impact testing, and ensure children sit rearward facing until they reach 15 months and 75cm. SlimFit R129 is based on these standards. You can learn more about car seat standards and help figure out which car seat is right for you in our car seat buying guide .

Why doesn’t SlimFit R129 have a forward facing harness booster? EU R129 suggests keeping your little one rearward facing as long as possible. After your child reaches 100cm, you can be certain they can then ride forward facing in SlimFit R129 as a highback booster.

How long should I keep my child rearward facing in the SlimFit R129 car seat? Under R129 standards, it is required to keep your little one rear-facing until 15 months and 75cm. We recommend keeping your child rearward facing as long as possible because this seat position will better protect your child's head, neck and spine in case of impact. For this reason, we advise rearward facing up to 105cm or approximately 4 years of age.

How many recline positions does the SlimFit R129 car seat have? The SlimFit R129 car seat has 6 total recline positions — 2 in rearward facing and 4 in forward facing. This means your child's head and neck will always be properly supported.

Can I machine wash SlimFit R129’s seat covers? Yes, you can wash the covers in your washing machine with cold water only on the delicate cycle. Drip dry and do not use bleach.

What is the maximum height and age for SlimFit R129? This incredible 2-in-1 convertible car seat can be used until your little one is your big one, up to 145cm or approximately 12 years of age.

Do I need to use the TrueShield™ Side Impact Protection pod? While the use of the TrueShield Side Impact Protection pod is optional, we provide it to give your child the best in side impact protection. Use the pod on the side of the car seat closest to the vehicle door to help absorb force in the event of a crash.

Explore Moscow City Center

Visiting the biggest city of the largest country in the World can be overwhelming and exciting. That's why we advise you to start your trip from the City Center. First destination, of course - Red Square, which plays important role in the history of Russia. The buildings surrounding the Square are all significant in some respect. Lenin's Mausoleum, for example, contains the embalmed body of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union. Nearby there is brightly domed Kremlin and the palaces and cathedrals of the Saint Basil's Cathedral, and one of the oldest and authentic Russian Market called GUM.

What to do in Moscow

There are plenty of activities for all ages that you can do in this beautiful city. If you like Art and History, you are in the right city. One of the most notable art museums in Moscow is the Tretyakov Gallery. It is one of the biggest Museums in Russia and contains both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Other great Museums options: Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, The State Historical Museum of Russia, and the Polytechnical Museum. Also, Moscow is the heart of the Russian performing arts, including ballet and circus. So if you are traveling with kids go visit Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard and in the evening you can enjoy the Bolshoi Theatre.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

things to do in Moscow in one week

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
