Written by Irishman Bram Stoker and published in 1897, the infamous bloodsucker has spawned countless adaptions across creative media and is the source of an entire vampire genre. It all began in a tiny Dublin hamlet called Clontarf, itself a historical and mystical location known for the Battle of Clontarf, where Irish hero Brian Boru was slain and more than 800 years later, Bram Stoker was born. Continue onto our city center hotel for check-in. The remainder of the day is free for your to explore the capital city. Dinner is on your own this evening. Overnight in Dublin. (*Note, transfer may be earlier depending on booked incoming flights).

Day 02, Tuesday, October 29 | Dublin

This morning after breakfast enjoy a panoramic tour of the Capital City ending at the EPIC Museum, located in Dublin's Docklands. This fantastic museum covers the history of the Irish diaspora and emigration to other countries. Some free time this afternoon to enjoy the Capital city before our spooktacular evening adventure on a 2-hour Dublin Ghost Bus Tour! Be enlightened by little-known tales of its darker side while journeying with your guide to some of its most sinister spots. Morning departure from Dublin, we head northwest to the Spooktacular Halloween Capital of Derry. Enjoy a 1.5-hour Derry Girls Tour, beginning at the famous Derry Girls mural on Orchard Street, and walk in the footsteps of your favorite Derry Girls (not forgetting the wee English fella of course!). Learn interesting facts about the show, visit filming locations, and have plenty of craic with your resident Derry Girl Charlene or purebred Derry man Garvin.  We have had the pleasure of hosting many stars from the show on our tour so if it's good enough for the stars then its good enough for you! After the craic, enjoy a guided tour of the famous Guildhall in Derry. Sitting within reach of our famous 400-year-old Walls is one of the City's most recognizable - and arguably one of the most stunning landmarks in Derry. The remainder of the afternoon is free in Derry where there are many spooky adventures to choose from. Return to your hotel for dinner this evening. Overnight in Derry. (D,B)

Afterward, be part of Europe’s largest Halloween Festival as the Walled City of Derry welcomes the spirit of Samhain through its historic gates for a festival like no other! Follow the Awakening the Walled City Trail and find out more about the folklore, history and heritage that makes this place so special. The story of Halloween is brought to life through illumination, aerial performance, pyrotechnics, and music, as the spirits cross over to join the festivities, bringing magic and mischief to the streets. Be sure and make your way over to the parade route to watch the Halloween parade, which traditionally involves hundreds of local performers from schools, clubs, and groups right across the City and District, helping it to retain the community spirit that has always been at the heart of Derry’s world-class festivities. Parade begins at 7:00 p.m., followed by the City of Drones at 8:15 p.m. and the Fireworks Finale at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks will take place on the River Foyle.  The best viewing points are along the Quay, from beside the Peace Bridge to Sainsbury’s. Dinner is on your own this evening. Enjoy a bite at one of the many fine restaurants Derry has to offer, before returning to your hotel for overnight. (B)

How to have the best, spookiest Halloween of your life in Ireland

Reader beware, you’re in for a delight halloween in ireland is like no place else in the world..

\n

Visiting the birthplace of Halloween on or close to October 31 itself means a celebration unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. What should you do in Ireland on Halloween? Here are our top suggestions.

Who invented Halloween? It was the Irish - well, the Celts. Over two thousand years ago, the Celts believed that Samhain , the festival that marked the end of the harvest season, was also the day when the dead could cross into the world of the living. This is why there’s no place like Ireland to celebrate Halloween. You feel the ghosts of history surround you while Ireland’s hospitality and festive spirit envelop you in a warm embrace.

Wondering what to do in Ireland for Halloween? From haunted castles and pubs to mind-blowingly inventive parades and festivals, from thrills and chills to fun for the whole family, we’ve got you covered.

Spend it in the Halloween capital of the world

You may not be aware, but the Northern Ireland city of Derry-Londonderry , on the banks of the River Foyle, is the world’s Halloween capital, rivaling Salem, Massachusetts. Each year, the famous walled city breaks into a week-long festival extravaganza dedicated to all things Halloween.

Over the first three nights, the city walls alight with supernatural illumination for the Awakening of the Walls, and Samhain Sessions take place across the city for some musical entertainment. The festivities reach their high point with the Halloween Parade, featuring stunning costumes, ghosts, and ghouls.

Explore Ireland’s “Haunted Triangle”

Where might you find one of Ireland’s most awfully haunted regions? I n County Offaly, in the midlands region of Leinster, of course. The so-called Offaly Haunted Triangle consists of three imposing castles that have more than their fair share of chilling histories.

First, there’s Charleville Castle, built between 1798 and 1812 by the First Earl of Charleville, Charles Bury. It has long been rumored that Bury was a devil-worshipper and his ghost walks among the dungeons, catacombs, and tower of his castle. Charleville is also haunted by the ghost of a young girl who fell downstairs to her death in the early 1800s, around the time the castle was being built. She allegedly still roams the castle and has been heard moving furniture, laughing, and talking.

At Kinnity Castle, in the beautiful Birr countryside, the “Phantom Monk of Kinnitty” has been seen gliding along the room of the Banquet Hall in this castle. The Geraldine Room and the Elizabeth Room are two haunted bedrooms in the castle, with other reports of supernatural presence throughout the grounds.

Leap Castle. Photo: Tourism Ireland

Next up, Leap Castle, near the town of Roscrea, is believed to be inhabited by several ghosts. One, perhaps the most frightening, is that of a foul-smelling elemental creature that is half-human and half-beast. It is said to roam the lower regions of the Castle. A ghost of a young girl, thought to be the daughter of a one-time owner of the Castle, also haunts the site. The story goes that her father killed the boy she was in love with, so she in turn killed her father one night during his sleep. The following day, the girl was pushed off the castle by an invisible hand, falling to her death from the hand of her own father’s ghost.

Witness the world’s coolest parade of giant puppets

Ever heard of the name Macnas? The Galway-based spectacle and street performance company take their beloved Halloween parades through the streets of Dublin and Galway each year, featuring storytellers, musicians, acrobats, artists, and their signature giant puppets.

Get lost (or found!) in a hedge maze

Nothing whispers “Halloween” quite so alluringly as a hedge maze. With plenty of false signs and exits, a hedge maze requires you to trust yourself, problem-solve, and get over the end of The Shining! One of Ireland’s largest hedge mazes can be found a short trip from Dublin in the north of County Kildare. The Kildare Maze, as it is known, opened to the public in 2000. It includes a watchtower at its very center so you can plan your escape if you get stuck. For novices, there’s a much smaller wooden maze, and for those who prefer to know exactly where they’re going, there’s a zip line course as well.

Meet some city ghosts

Glasnevin Cemetery. Photo: Tourism Ireland

Glasnevin Cemetery. Photo: Tourism Ireland

As one might expect of a city dating back to the Viking raids of the eighth and ninth centuries, Dublin is considered an exceptionally haunted city. This is why it makes sense to let the experts show you around on one of Dublin’s many excellent walking or bus ghost tours. One of the most acclaimed is the Gravedigger’s Ghost Bus tour , which takes brave souls on a whirlwind visit to some of the city’s most haunted locales, including Dublin Castle and Christchurch Cathedral, Kilmainham Gaol, Glasnevin Cemetery where over 1 million Dubliners take their final repose, and it’s adjoining Gravedigger’s Pub (a.k.a John Kavanaugh's), where you can enjoy a much-deserved drink.

For those who prefer to feel fear on foot, try the Haunted History Walking Tour of Dublin, which winds through the cobblestoned streets of South Dublin and tells tales of witch burnings, haunted St. Audoen’s church, and demons who once stalked the city streets.

Have a pint in the world’s most haunted pub

Would you dare order a pint at Grace Neill’s Pub in County Down? Built in 1611, the pub was originally known as “The King’s Arms,” but was renamed after Grace Neill, who ran the inn in the town of Donaghadee for many years until her death in 1918 at the age of 98.

But Grace hasn’t let her death interfere with her work at the pub. A ghost of an old woman in Victorian clothing has allegedly been spotted in dark corners of the inn, and her spirit can be seen at the front bar, straightening glasses and furniture and switching lights on and off. A strange shuffling can apparently be heard coming from the second floor, and some have even felt an invisible “presence” pass through them while standing near the building’s staircase.

Patrons visiting Grace Neill’s, officially one of the oldest pubs on the island of Ireland, have nothing to worry about – the former caretaker of the inn is as friendly as ghosts can be! Grace ran a welcoming establishment while she was alive and continues to do so in her afterlife. Stop by for pints, music, and the craic!

Halloween – a time for thrills, chills and scaring ourselves silly. But did you know that everyone’s favourite fright-filled holiday began in Ireland? Trace Halloween right back to its origins and you’ll find yourself in the mists of pagan Ireland over 2,000 years ago – a time when the ancient festival of Samhain was celebrated in the heart of Ireland's Ancient East to mark the beginning of winter.

It’s said that at Halloween the veil between our world and the Otherworld is at its thinnest, allowing spirits and demons to easily pass between the two. So come with us on a strange and spooky journey as we experience Halloween in Ireland.

If there’s one thing the Irish know how to do really, really well, it’s scaring the living bejaysus out of you. Author Derek Landy, The Telegraph #Halloween

A spooky Halloween supper

Halloween isn't your typical celebration. And, it turns out, Halloween food isn't exactly “normal” either.

Can’t make it to the island of Ireland for Halloween? Don’t worry, you can recreate the magic of the Halloween season from the comfort of home, no matter where you are in the world.

First off, you’ll want some barmbrack. This bread/cake is a staple of every Irish household at Halloween. And a note to any young romantics in your family – if they find the ring in the cake, they’ll be married within the year! And for your dinner, you must have colcannon – curly kale cabbage mixed with creamy mashed potatoes.

After dinner and before trick or treating, you have to partake in some of the traditional Halloween games. The most famous is snap apple, where an apple is suspended from a string while the blindfolded revellers try to get a bite. You can also try bobbing for apples in water, just be sure to bring a towel!

Have you ever wondered what Halloween in Ireland is really like?

Halloween in Ireland: 9 Spooky Experiences to Enjoy in 2023

Did you know that this popular holiday is based on the pagan festival known as Samhain?

The ancient Celtic holiday (pronounced “sow-in” as in sow, the female pig), would take place between Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 and was one of four quarterly fire festivals in ancient Ireland.

This one marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

It was seen as the division of the earth’s year, going from summer to the much darker winter months.

It was this division that prompted the ancient people of Ireland to believe that the spirits could more easily pass through to the mortal world.

During Samhain, the deceased family members were honored while the evil spirits were banished.

To keep themselves from harm, the Celts often left food and drink outside to keep the spirits happy.

If you’re curious why we dress up in costume for Halloween, it’s because the Celts often wore costumes and masks to disguise themselves from the evil spirits they most feared.

It was the Irish emigrants who brought the old traditions of Samhain with them to America in the 19 th century.

The holiday was virtually unknown here before that.

Today, Halloween is a popular holiday in Ireland and while there is certainly a more modern vibe to it, some of those old traditions are being revived in the many festivals that you’ll find around the country.

In Athboy, an ancient Samhain hub, visitors gathered on Oct. 31st at the town's Fair Green to view the festival's closing ceremony known as “An Lasadh Suas.”

The Puca flame was ignited on a special stage to signal the beginning of a night of music and celebration.

2. The Bram Stoker Festival

The popular Bram Stoker Festival returns to Dublin in 2024 from Oct. 25th through the 28th for four days and nights of “deadly adventures.”

The celebration pays homage to Bram Stoker, the Dubliner who created the novel  “Dracula,” which was first published 126 years ago.

In 2022, the highlight of the festival was a light and sound experience called “Borealis,” which beamed the experience of an aurora borealis (the Northern Lights) over Dublin Castle’s Upper Courtyard.

As in years past, the festival provides plenty of entertainment for young and old, including film screenings, discussions, and walking tours of Dublin's dark side, specifically the sites most closely associated with Stoker ( Marsh's Library , Trinity College , Dublin Castle, and more).

Malahide Castle:

King Henry II gifted Richard Talbot the lands and harbour of Malahide for his services to the crown in 1185. From that point on, the Talbot family became intertwined with Malahide’s history and development.

A magnificent fortress with a long and dramatic history, and a few resident ghosts, Malahide also have gardens that you can roam through, It has a walled garden, and a Butterfly house but its ghosts are active here all the time:

Reports of spooky sightings go back as long as the castle’s 800-year history; hardly surprising when you consider the tales of battles, bloodshed and broken-hearts surrounding this medieval building.

Some of these ghosts are connected to real historical figures that lived here while others are of more mysterious origin. One of the most famous ghostly residents is court jester Puck. Unlucky in love, Puck continues to nurse a broken heart in the turret where he used to live. You may also have heard of the lady in white; a female apparition who wanders the rooms and corridors of the castle.

Plenty of visitors have reported encounters with these specters – will you be next?!

Christ Church Cathedral:

Christ Church Cathedral has stood at the heart of Dublin for almost 1,000 years. Many visitors from all over the world are welcomed to this important heritage site every day.

History is also brought to life at the cathedral, originally a Viking church, it is the home to Crypts.

At the Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin lie two stone effigies side-by-side—one larger and intact, and the other a worn-down demi-figure. The larger of the two is dressed in full armor, its face completely covered to its viewers. It carries a large shield decorated in crosses; the family this design could belong to or any other meaning it might hold remains a mystery. Meanwhile, the smaller figure’s features are indistinct due to age. The effigies are dated to the fourteenth century but are said to be the resting places of historical figures from the twelfth century, If tradition is to be believed, then these figures represent Strongbow and his son.

Ardgillan Castle:

Initially, the site was heavily wooded, the name Ardgillan being derived from the Irish “Ard Choill” meaning High Wood. It was cleared out by service soldiers and itinerant workers in return for one penny a day, sleeping accommodation, and one meal.

The house consists of two storeys over a basement which extends out under the lawns on the southern side of the building. When occupied, the ground and first floors were the living accommodations while the west and east wings were servants’ quarters and estate offices. The basement is comprised of the service floor, the kitchen, and stores. The Castle has now been restored and the ground floor rooms and kitchens are open to visitors for guided tours.

The itinerary is subject to slight change depending on weather and other conditions.

St Michans Crypts:

St. Michan’s Church is an historic Church of Ireland church located in Church Street, Dublin 7, Ireland. The church is renowned for its unusual vaults, which house a number of mummified remains, as well as for its fine woodwork and historic organ. The church has a fascinating history, dating back over 900 years.

The earliest Christian chapel on the site of St. Michan’s Church dates from 1095 and was built by the Vikings. The current structure largely dates from a reconstruction undertaken under William Robinson in 1686, but it is still the only parish church on the north side of the River Liffey that has survived from a Viking foundation. Over the centuries, the church has served the spiritual needs of both Catholic and Protestant parishioners in Dublin.

Wicklow Gaol:

Wicklow Gaol was, for many years, a place of horrendous atrocities in which prisoners were subjected to torture, starvation and death. Many might scoff at the idea of ghosts. Many others believe that a place such as this, with its dark and sordid history, could very well harbour the spirits of those who previously lived or worked here.

Some of the strange unexplained events and encounters reported include:

  • A man seen walking in front of the bars to the holding cell/dayroom on the ground floor.
  • A woman in a full length black velvet cloak with the hood up seen walking towards the two rooms at ground level.
  • A smell of roses or at other times bad smells sometimes emanate from Cell 5.
  • A green mist floating around the main floor.
  • A man seen walking from cell 19 to the end of walkway – some people have commented that he held his hands behind his back.
  • A man seen standing in the far corner of the ship’s upper deck.
  • Some women have reported feeling extremely uneasy on the upper deck, experiencing a sense of fear or apprehension.
  • On the lower deck people often report seeing shadows out of the corner of their eye.
  • On the top floor some visitors have reported seeing or hearing children crying.

Glendalough monastic Site:

Glendalough has been a place of pilgrimage since the 6th century when St. Kevin lived there as a hermit and ascetic, attracting followers and establishing a monastery there.  Little is known for certain about Kevin, since the many stories we have were first written centuries after his passing. These stories and myths continue to fascinate and offer inspiration today.

St. Laurence O’Toole was abbot in the Glendalough monastery and initiated reform before being appointed Archbishop of Dublin in 1162. It is believed that he remained a monk at heart and returned to Glendalough on retreat frequently.

Itinerary is subject to slight change depending on weather and other conditions.

Charleville Castle:

Located in County Offaly, in the Midlands of Ireland, and bordering the town of Tullamore near the Shannon River, Charleville Castle is situated in Ireland's most ancient primordial oak woods, once the haunting grounds of Ireland's druids.

Charleville Castle grew from paper doodles in early 1798 to grandiose plans by the end of that very eventful year in Ireland. It was built by Charles William Bury, Earl of Charleville and was designed by Francis Johnston, one of the leading architects of the day.

Charleville Castle is said to be the finest example of gothic-revival architecture in the country. This is a veritable Gothic castle of grand proportions. It owes its "Tin Soldier Fortress" look to the celebration of victory over the third French revolutionary expedition to Ireland - the first decisive victory by Britain over the revolutionary republican movement, which was sweeping across the monarchies and their colonies at that time.

It took fourteen years to complete this gothic dream, a monument not only to a now-forgotten power but also to the people who made it possible, the Irish craftsmen and impoverished people.

Tonight you will investigate the castle's many ghosts.

St John's Castle:

King John's Castle also known as Limerick Castle is a 13th-century castle located on King's Island in Limerick, Ireland, next to the River Shannon. Although the site dates back to 922 when the Vikings lived on the Island, the castle itself was built on the orders of King John of England in 1200. One of the best preserved Norman castles in Europe, the walls, towers and fortifications remain today.

Aillwee Caves:

Expert guides will accompany and inform you during your leisurely tour. The tour consists of a 45-minute stroll through the beautiful caverns – over bridged chasms, under weird formations and alongside the thunderous waterfall which sometimes gently sprays the unsuspecting visitor! Marvel at the frozen waterfall and learn about the now extinct brown bears’ bones (ursos arctos).

The guides will bring you back to the overground world where you can browse and shop in a distinctly different gift shop which is housed in the award-winning complex that guards the entrance to the Burren underground.

Kinvarra Castle:

In the early 17th century the castle passed into the hands of the Martyn’s of Galway.

Richard Martyn, Mayor of Galway lived here until 1642 and the Martyn’s of Tulira Castle, owned the castle until this century.

Halloween Cnámha La Loba (bones of the Wolfes) Parade:

Inspired by the legend of La Loba , a wild Wolf-Woman who wanders the world, collecting the bones of animals, humans and demi-gods that are in danger of being lost to the world and singing them back to life by moonlight.

This artistic parade is created by the theatre group "Macnas" who travel the world with their designs and puppet shows.

This is am amazing, creative parade to behold.

Activity Level: Low/Moderate

Leap Castle:

One of the longest continually inhabited Castles in Ireland, Leap Castle has a rich and fascinating history.  Leap Castle is thought to have been built in the early 1500’s by the O’Bannon clan.   The O’Bannon clan were the secondary chieftains under the ruling of the O'Carroll  clan.  The current building is thought to have been built over an earlier castle.  Before that the site was used by Druids for initiation ceremonies.   The castle has been home to much bloodshed and violence over the centuries.

The O’Carrolls were a fierce and brutal people, bent on domination.  They were known for their ruthless tactics, often killing others and each other on the path to supremacy.  The O’Carolls called Leap Castle their home until it was wrenched from their hands in 1642 by an English soldier of the Cromwellian forces named John Darby.

The Elemental is one of the most interesting spirits that reside at Leap Castle.  It is an entity that is shrouded in mystery and intrigue.  The first encounter, origin and exact nature of the Elemental are unknown but there are many theories that have circulated over the years.

Two young girls have also been seen at Leap Castle. Emily & Charlotte. Emily is thought to be aged around 11 or 12 and Charlotte around 6 or 7. They are mainly seen playing in the main hall and running up the stairwell. They are believed to have lived at the castle during the 1600’s and are thought to be the last of the O’Carrolls or the first of the Darbys. These are just two examples of spirits in this place, Sean Ryan will tell you all the stories and his experiences, and he might just play a few tunes for you too.

Rock of Cashel

Set on a dramatic outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale, the Rock of Cashel, iconic in its historic significance, possesses the most impressive cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland. Among the monuments to be found there is a round tower, a high cross, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, an abbey, the Hall of the Vicars Choral and a fifteenth-century Tower House.

Originally the seat of the kings of Munster, according to legend St. Patrick himself came here to convert King Aenghus to Christianity. Brian Boru was crowned High King at Cashel in 978 and made it his capital.

In 1101 the site was granted to the church and Cashel swiftly rose to prominence as one of the most significant centres of ecclesiastical power in the country.

The surviving buildings are remarkable. Cormac’s Chapel, for example, contains the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland.

The Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland’s most spectacular and – deservedly – most visited tourist attractions.

Blarney Castle:

Blarney Castle is a tower house, a type of fortification built by Gaelic lords and the Anglo-Irish between the 15th and 17th centuries. Tower houses are typically four or five storeys tall with one or two main chambers, plus several ancillary chambers on each floor.

Blarney Castle is an unusually large tower house, and it comprises at least two towers – the second one was added in the 1500s. You can see the point the two phases meet as a vertical line in the masonry on the north elevation.

The walls are 18 feet thick at the base, gradually sloping inwards as they rise. This makes the building more stable but would also have helped with defence: when an object was dropped from the top it would bounce off the wall on the way down and fly outwards into the enemy.

Charles Fort:

Charles Fort is a trace italienne fortification, a bastion fort with one section of the outer wall built in star fashion. It is located at the southern end of the village of Summer Cove, on Kinsale harbour, County Cork, Ireland. First completed in 1682, Charles Fort was sometimes historically referred to as the "new fort" - to contrast with James' Fort which had been built on the other side of Kinsale harbour before 1607.

Drombeg Stone Circle:

The Stone circle originally consisted of seventeen closely spaced stones of which 13 survive. The stones are made from local sandstone. The circle spans 9.3 metres (31 ft) in diameter. As an axial or "Cork–Kerry" stone circle, it contains two taller entrance stones placed opposite a recumbent axial stone. Its axis is orientated south west towards the setting sun.

The most westerly stone (1.9m long) is the long recumbent and has two egg shaped cup-marks, one with a ring around it. An axial stone circle, also known as a "Cork–Kerry type" stone circle, it is flanked by a pair of 1.8m high axial portal stones, which mark the entrance to the stone circle, and face the recumbent altar stone. ] This arrangement creates a south-west axis, and orients the monument in the direction of the setting sun during the midwinter solstice.

Cahir Castle:

Cahir Castle is one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles. It stands proudly on a rocky island on the River Suir.

The castle was was built in the thirteenth century and served as the stronghold of the powerful Butler family. So effective was its design that it was believed to be impregnable, but it finally fell to the earl of Essex in 1599 when heavy artillery was used against it for the first time. During the Irish Confederate Wars it was besieged twice more.

At the time of building, Cahir Castle was at the cutting edge of defensive castle design and much of the original structure remains.

Kilkenny Castle Grounds/Town:

We stop in this midieval Castle and town for you to stretch your legs. We bring you to the Castle grounds and then you can explore the town.

A 12th century castle, a bustling crafts and design scene, time-honoured traditional pubs, cobbled lanes and secret alleys – the medieval city of Kilkenny mixes small-town charm and big-city buzz to perfection.

Ftizpatrick's Castle:

This 17th century Castle has all the charm of the old world but has all the modern conveniences of a 4 star hotel. It has two top class restaurants, bedrooms are big and comfortable with ensuite. There is a heated swimming pool, Gym, Sauna and you can have spa treatments. You are 5 mins walk from the beach and the walk into Killiney is not to long either. Bono from U2 and Van Morrison lives in the area and you might just see them in the castle in one of the 2 bars.

Enjoy your last night in Ireland.

11 spooky irish halloween traditions you’ll want to know about.

Irish halloween traditions

There are many fun times to visit Ireland, but Halloween has a fun Irish flair that traces back to the Celtic Pagans and their shenanigans. The Celtic traditions are all tangled up in Ireland’s rich history, and Halloween is like their star holiday. It’s not just about dressing up and trick-or-treating; they’ve got some wild and fascinating Irish Halloween traditions that you probably didn’t even know about.

I’ve always celebrated Halloween in America, but after looking into Ireland’s spooky customs, I’d love to experience it over there. It’s like a whole different world of Halloween, and I’m here for it! I’ve been to Ireland for a variety of different holidays, and let me tell you – they know how to celebrate.

Whether you’re planning on visiting Ireland during Halloween or just curious about the Halloween traditions in Ireland, you’ll love reading through this article. I guarantee you’ll learn some new facts you haven’t heard of before!

The History of Halloween in Ireland

halloween in ireland traditions

While the candy conglomerates and costume-loving fanatics have taken over this holiday, this spooky spectacle originates from the Celtic (a fun Irish fact ).

Is Halloween an Irish holiday?

This event, filled with glowing bonfires and Irish Halloween costumes, was known as Samhein in Ireland. The festival marked the beginning of the colder winter months and would allow humans and entities from the spirit world to collide for one night.

This was why people dressed in various interesting garb (such as an animal costume) to remain undercover from mystical creatures that roamed the earth during this time. The burning bonfires were also used to ward off ill-spirited entities, such as witches or ghosts that hunt at night.

During this dark and turbulent night, it was often stated that predictions and prophecies could be made due to its spiritual and otherworldly undertone. People also believed live sacrifices and tributes in the fire would help them seek answers from beyond.

Do they celebrate Halloween in Ireland?

Yes! The Irish love celebrating Halloween, and while I haven’t been for this particular holiday, I have been in the country for many others, including St. Stephen’s Day, and they take their holiday celebrations very seriously.

Note: If you have a fancy for things that go bump in the night, make sure you go on this Dublin ghost tour to enjoy the scarier things in life.

Are you looking to learn about the strange and uncanny ancient stories and traditions of an Ireland Halloween? We’ll guide you through the mysterious past of this supernatural — yet fun-filled — event’s history to uncover the terrific past (sometimes present) traditions of the Irish.

1. Preparing a Dumb Supper

A Dumb Supper was traditionally seen as the traditional Irish Halloween dinner that would be eaten in complete silence. So, the term “dumb” in this traditional feast refers to the omission of sound rather than a silly meal.

The menu usually includes favorite nibbles of loved ones that have recently passed to the world of the undead. This is also why the fires in the Samhain played such a pivotal role in the ritual, as this glowing beacon would usually lead the spirits to their families for a visit.

With photos of commemoration and plates set for the ones you’ve lost, this tradition is quite a warm-hearted event to feel a connection between the deceased and the living.

2. Eating Colcannon & Barmbrack

barmbrack

When it comes to Halloween, Ireland goes all out with interesting Irish food concoctions (you may also be surprised to know you can have an Irish Thanksgiving dinner there). A mix of curly cabbage, raw onions, and potatoes, the hearty splendors of a Colcannon is commonly eaten before the festivities of Halloween.

See something shiny in your food? Coins were traditionally placed in this dish (usually wrapped in paper) for children to find as a treasure on Halloween.

Barmbrack is a fruit cake loaf, which can be described as a type of sweet and tasty bread eaten as a treat (or trick). Much like the Colcannon, the Barmbrack is filled with things for the family to find to predict their future.

If a family member finds a rag, this is usually seen as an indication of troubles ahead in their financial state. The ring in the bread is said to be a sign of upcoming luck where matters of the heart are concerned, such as romance. The coin’s founder is seen as the lucky person who’ll have good fortune for the rest of the year in this unique Irish Halloween tradition.

If you love spooky tales, you’ll want to visit some of the most haunted places in Ireland .

3. Cabbage Picking With a Twist

cabbage

A fun tradition for any single lady looking for love, Halloween in Ireland means women can take to the cabbage patch fields and predict their romantic future. These local ladies are traditionally blindfolded to make their way through the growing produce and pick the first cabbage they find.

Once the ball of green leafy goodness is pulled, the lady in question can loosen her blindfold to find what’s in store in her future marriage. If the cabbage is found to have a lot of fertile ground stuck to its undercarriage, she’s sure to become betrothed to a husband with a lot of green (money, that is).

After this, the woman has to eat the vegetable to determine whether the partner will be sweet or leave a bitter taste in her mouth during their marriage.

This is the perfect time to see what the most haunted castle in Ireland is.

4. Carving a Jack-O-Lantern

halloween traditions in ireland pumpkin

While some might regard the staple pumpkin decoration on Halloween as a cute addition to the porch or a quintessential thing to do in Ireland in the fall , it has a fascinating history behind its origins. Before the spooky yet cooky faces on this humble vegetable, faces were carved on turnips.

This festively decorated vegetable finds its roots (excuse the pun) in the story of Stingy Jack from Irish folklore. In summary, Stingy Jack played hard and loose with the Devil and was eventually bound to walk the planet in limbo, often referred to as ‘Jack of the Lantern.’

Thus, the tradition found its way to North America, where pumpkins were used instead of the traditional turnip (as it is more common in the region). Instead of the demonic faces used to ward off the malicious spirit of Stingy Jack in Ireland, noways, friendly faces are used on Pumpkins for a more kid-friendly affair during Halloween.

5. Apple Fortune Telling

halloween trips ireland

While pumpkins might be the star produce of Halloween nowadays, the significance of apples was often used in ancient Celtic times to predict a person’s love life. Often associated with sensuality and love, it’s easy to see why people used this fruit to find their chosen path for future romance.

A popular Irish Halloween tradition was for an individual to attempt to peel a single apple with one try until it was fully peeled. Once the peel was dropped, it was theorized that the form it takes upon the ground would bear the remembrance of the initial of great love.

Another juicy tradition, which pairs with the apple bobbing game, is when the first apple is bitten, the individual should place it under a pillow before sleeping. This will ensure sweet and melodic dreams for future loved ones (or perhaps a simple headache from its awkward shape).

6. Dressing Up

child witch costume

As mentioned, Samhain is all about bonfires and donning interesting costumes to ward off spirits as a popular Halloween Irish tradition. Amongst animal skin garb, costumes were also worn with the appearance of devils and evil ghouls to make the actual entities scared of or come to see them as one of their own.

With ghosts, witches, and scary costumes running around during this late October event, it’s easy to see those old traditions tend to die hard (and it’s one of the spookier things to do in Ireland in October ).

If you head out to the pubs in Dublin , you’re sure to see plenty of people in costume on Halloween while participating in Ireland’s Halloween traditions. Make sure to book your hotel in Dublin in advance, as this can be a popular time of year.

7. Beware of the Fairies – Safety Measures

While in fairytales, fairies are depicted as magical creatures filled with happiness and fairy dust, they have a dark undertone and connotation in Irish folklore. Fairies were known as entities that crept around on Halloween night to select victims and collect their souls to keep.

Luckily, some measures can be put in place to keep these menacing creatures at bay. If you’re in Ireland, be sure to keep a vial of holy water to sprinkle on your farm animals and ensure they don’t get whipped up in the night by fairy friends if you believe in this Irish Halloween tradition.

Tip: If you see yourself as a protector of the people, you can go out on a fantastic Irish night to hunt down the keeper of souls captured throughout the evening. It has been said that if you scoop up the dust from your feet and throw it at fairies, they are bound to release any kept souls.

8. A Game of Mischief

pumpking carving halloween in ireland

Halloween is when the ghosts and ghouls of spook come out to play, from cheerful yet eerie jack-o-lanterns to scary stories that will make you go boo with joy. This is also the perfect opportunity to get some traditional Irish Halloween games going to have some good ol’ fun.

As fairies and evil spirits are often to blame for all the wrongdoings on an Irish night on Halloween, youths see this as an opportunity to create some fun-filled carnage. From funny pranks to smashing cabbages, Halloween games in Ireland have always been seen as a young troublemaker’s paradise.

Halloween is a great time to try some of the traditional drinks in Ireland as well!

9. Snap Apple

This is quite a popular and fun Irish Halloween tradition to play in a parlor or household. Participants are blindfolded, and their arms are bound to decrease mobility.

Then, players are welcome to try and bite a single hanging apple from a string at head level and see who will be victorious. The winner will either obtain a prize or the great fortune of being the first to marry.

Tip: Looking to see some remnants of the Irish Celtics? Take a look at these scenic drives in Ireland to get your fill of the historical wonders of Ireland.

10. Trick or Treat in Irish Tradition

witch costume halloween

While mentioning this fun activity is usually accompanied by visions of streams of candy, the actual practice has quite an ominous undertone. As peasants were relatively poor, they usually made their way around wealthy homesteads to beg for food or drink.

This practice was derived from poor people receiving baked goods (called soul cakes) from the rich in exchange for praying for their recently deceased loved ones, which is something you probably didn’t know about this Halloween in Ireland tradition.

11. Shave the Friar

A real testament to the lack of games in ancient times, Shave the Friar could be played with a pile of ash in a cone shape and a shaving of wood at the very top. The game’s objective was to scoop the biggest pile without moving the piece of wood before the solid heap broke down in this Irish Samhain tradition.

As the “haunted tour” it would have been nice to actually do a haunted tour. Maybe the haunted tour at Hampton Palace where actors are dressed Up and walking the halls or a night tour of the Tower of London. It was a fabulous 9 days. Only missed the haunted part.

  • Dublin has seen something of a culinary revolution, and the city now boasts an impressive array of new restaurants offering exciting cuisine with continental Europe, Asian, and even American influences.
  • Scottish cuisine relies on readily available ingredients like game, dairy, and fish, with little use of exotic spices. Pickled kippers and smoked salmon are popular, as well as hearty dishes like Scotch broth (stew of meat and root vegetables) and haggis (a savory pudding of sheep innards). Scotch whisky is a legendary local spirit, and Scottish ales are world-famous.
  • For traditional English fare at a reasonable price, try a pub meal of fish and chips or bangers and mash. Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, and Cumberland sausages are also worth a try.
  • Modern-day London boasts an array of diverse international restaurants. Popular options for the adventurous palate include Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek, and West African cuisine. • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.

Experience Halloween in Ireland – Where it Began

Halloween in Ireland

Table of Contents

It’s not that anyone really needs a reason to visit Ireland, but for those who are fans of haunted tales and Halloween, have you considered planning your next vacation in October to celebrate Halloween in  Ireland?   If you’ve been there, you already know what a welcoming and enchanting (and sometimes hauntingly so) country. With a little help from our friends at Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland, we bring you Halloween in Ireland — and why you should visit in October.  (Updated 10/28/20)

Why did Halloween come to be in the first place?

The monastic Island, Skellig Michael founded in the 7th century, for 600 years the island was a centre of monastic life for Irish Christian monks. The Celtic monastery, which is situated almost at the summit of the 230-metre-high rock became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is one of Europe's better known but least accessible monasteries. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan

Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland shares insights on its upcoming October immersions into the worlds of the Druids of 5,000 BC, the later Celts (2,000 BC), and the early Christians.

Rob Rankin, founder and owner with Amy Rankin, explains:

“Iron Age, pagan Druids were superseded by the Celts for whom the  Nov. 1   Samhain  (pronounced “sah-win” or “sow-in”) marked a new year. At sunset on  October 31 , the line blurred between the real world and that of banshees and ghosts. Bonfires and scary masks kept away evil spirits. Food left outside doorways appeased these spirits.  Colcannon of boiled potatoes, kale, and onions welcomed the visits of dead ancestors.  Samhain morphed into the Christian calendar as All Hallows.”

Major Halloween Events in Ireland

Throughout Ireland, this mythology is recreated annually, dates varying but usually beginning the last week of October into the first week of November. Major events include:

  • Galway: Macnas Halloween Parade , drawing upwards of 40,000 people who revel in the antics of costumed storytellers and Mummers.
  • Dublin: Bram Stoker Festival , four nights of deadly adventures in the fashion of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
  • Derry/Londonderry:  Derry Halloween : Return of the Ancients with haunted harvest markets and a monster funfair
  • Belfast:   Halloween Monster Mash and Fireworks Display .

What are Ireland’s Halloween Traditions?

  • Slices of fruit-filled Barnbrack Cake that contains a coin, a ring, or a rag, each portending an event of the new year;
  • Costumes, a tradition dating to the Celtic Druids who believed that this would help them blend in with spirits up from the dead;
  • Bonfire’s embers tied to dreams of a loved one.

Why You Should Visit Ireland in October

Derry Halloween's Return of the ancients includes a fireworks show. Photo: Vagabond Tours of Ireland

The charms of visiting Ireland in October, says Rankin, include:

  • more elbow room with fewer visitors around;
  • crisp but comfortable temperatures of around 57F with misty mornings;
  • lots of kale to make  colcannon ;
  • apples for ciders, blackberries, and raspberries;
  • migrations of geese, ducks, swans, and wading birds moving south from the Arctic;
  • Nature’s russet hues

Culturally Immersive Tours of Ireland

Now that you’re ready to plan your vacation to Ireland in October, Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland offers two styles of culturally immersive travel.

For October touring, the company recommends these two itineraries:

1. A 6 Day Ancient Ireland Tour  helps shed light on Halloween.

Ireland's Aughnanure castle view from above Photo: Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland

Driftwood Journeys of Discovery has designed this mentally stimulating exploration of Ireland’s east coast for imaginations that yearn to burrow into bogs, scale crenelated towers, and shimmy up mountains for glimpses of Iron Age Celts sifted into Stone Age sands.  These tours offer an intimate and in-depth looking and lingering pace, sans the physical exertion of the below Vagabond Adventure Tours.

Stories of buried bodies under ancient stones begin while passing through the Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin where a wealth of spooky stories are stored. Visions of Vikings landing longboats, Norman invaders, medieval monks chanting, mineral-mad 19th-century industrialists and emigrants clutching destitute families abound. More than any other region of Ireland, this coastline defines how over 5,000 some years the Irish came to be.

Check their website for tour departure dates and pricing.

2. Wild Irish Rover Tour

Ancient Ireland - Tintern Abbey Wexford ireland Photo: Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland

Vagabond Adventure Tours  are for active travelers who want to mix up hiking and biking and other outdoor adventures with history, culture, dining, and shopping.

This  8-Day Wild Irish Rover Tour  from  Vagabond Adventure Tours  allows guests to experience at a leisurely pace the west coast of Ireland and the peninsulas of the southwest all the way up to Connemara.

As with all  Vagabond adventure tours, the itinerary blends history, culture, and fun activity options as far from maddening crowds as possible, often on ancient roads that only Vagabond’s 4x4s can navigate. Guests hike, horseback ride, bicycle, kayak, and boat; live overnight like kings and queens in a castle; and bar crawl for two nights amongst Dingle town’s 54 pubs.

“Every stone we walk over has a story to tell. Ruins and castles are, after all, about people – and ghosts!” adds Rankin.

There ate tours in Ireland that include also Halloween parties in Derry, Medieval Banquet at a castle and Irish Traditional dinner with dances. And also 3 day Halloween short breaks in Ireland departing from Dublin with Halloween party in Londonderry

Halloween is my favorite holiday and I have always been partial to my Irish heritage. I think October is the perfect time for me to visit Ireland. They good rates for flights at that time too! I wrote down the name of the Vagabond small groups tours, so if I book a tour I will mention I heard about them from you. Thanks for the info.

I LOVE Ireland any time of the year. I’ve visited in November and once in the summer. Always fun, but I agree October might just be the perfect time especially because October in Ireland has more “elbow room.” thank you!

' src=

I have always wanted to visit Ireland, and I really enjoy trips that incorporate local culture and history. I think I’d also like visiting in October for the extra elbow room 🙂

My hubby loves all things haunted and Ireland has long been on my list. Win-Win! I love learning the histories behind a place, especially histories from so long ago! We might have to plan a trip for some Halloween spookery one of these years.

I’m with you — I’m a fan of all things haunted and perhaps mostly because Ireland has so much history which makes the “hauntings” seem more authentic.

What a great experience! That is something I think I would like to do! I love activities that incorporate some type of history!

halloween trips ireland

Really enjoyed the Sighisoara party over the Bran castle party on which we participated last year. Great guide, fun trip, great food! Sighisoara hotel was great, but the one at Bran castle was very dated and in need of updates. Overall would give it a 4.5 rating, loved our trip!

halloween trips ireland

Best Halloween I’ve ever had During the Halloween tour we had 3 different parties in 3 different locations across Transylvania. I highly recommend this tour if you want to learn more about Dracula. Best Halloween ever, and I think the people that I met made it even greater!

halloween trips ireland

I honestly could not have imagined how amazing studying Dracula in Romania would be. Of course, I knew a lot about the literary Dracula and I loved being immersed in the world of the novel. But I had no idea how much I would enjoy the history behind Vlad the Impaler. That was really fascinating for me. I loved going to all the different cities and being immersed in the culture, and it definitely made me much more interested in and open to the information and the stories Stefan was telling us. My favorite part was eating in the house where Dracula was born and Stefan telling us the stories of Vlad the Impaler’s deeds in that room. We did so much in so short a time, and I loved it.

Experience Overview

Ireland, an enchanted isle of mist and mysteries. Where better to explore ancient pagan rites of the druids, visit altars where awful and unspeakable practices were performed in past eras, and visit abbeys, castles and country houses, haunted by uneasy spirits of the past. Explore little country graveyards were those who are long-buried rise up on Halloween. Hear tales of the paranormal from those who have experience of the inexplicable. Meet some of Europe's friendliest people and enjoy the beautiful, unspoiled countryside. Bask in the comfort of charming old inns, sample delightful food and listen to seanchaithe tell tall tales of headless horses and phantom carriages, of pookas and fairies, of witches and enchantment. You’ll hear about the Banshee - the Irish ghost with the dreadful, wailing voice. Descriptions of her appearance vary from story to story, from an ugly old hag to a beautiful young woman, but all agree that the creature’s blood-curdling voice can be heard three times before someone dies. And then of course, there are the locations and buildings said to be haunted.

Dublin & Ghosts

Arrive into Dublin Airport and enjoy a private transfer to your hotel. Begin with a familiarisation tour of Dublin’s fair city – your walking tour will take in the beauties of this fine Georgian city as well as exploring some of the more haunted sites. Explore a spooky house in Henrietta Street; check out the gruesome history of the elegant Dublin Castle; survey the tombs of St Patrick’s Cathedral; spot Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’s Travels, amongst the bookstacks of Marsh’s Library. Visit St Michan’s Church where Handel first performed the Messiah & the bodies of people who died in the 15th century are perfectly preserved for all to see. Take in Kildare Street, where Bram Stoker, author of Dracula lived. Opt to stay at the Shelbourne Hotel. The Shelbourne is said to be haunted by a young girl by the name of Mary Masters. Mary passed away from cholera in the hotel in the nineteenth century. Ever since then countless people all through the years have seen the ghost or experienced something that they can’t explain.

The Hell Fire Club is the popular name given to the ruined building at the top of Montpelier Hill in Co Dublin where the Devil is said to have appeared.

In Dublin (where author of Dracula, Bram Stoker, was born), visit St Michan’s Church where the bodies of people who died in the 15th century are perfectly preserved for all to see.

The Shelbourne

Kilmainham Gaol

Today you will be visiting the notorious Kilmainham Gaol. If you have any desire to understand Irish history – especially the juicy bits about resistance to British rule – then a visit to this former prison is an absolute must. Prisons are famously haunted buildings, and Ireland’s most famous prison is no exception. This threatening grey building, built in 1796, played a role in virtually every act of Ireland’s painful path to independence, and even today, despite closing in 1924, it still has the power to chill. Numerous reports of paranormal activity on the grounds of Kilmainham have been reported throughout the years. Following your visit to the prison, take the remainder of the day to explore the Irish capital on your own. In the evening, take the opportunity to experience other spirits… that is the spirits of Irish pubs! Enjoy a traditional music pub tour of Dublin, where you will interact with locals and indulge on a crisp Guinness beer all the while enjoying the folklore of years past.

Glendalough & Wicklow Mountains

Today, meet your driver guide in the lobby of your hotel. He will be with you for the remainder of your time in Ireland. Spend the day exploring County Wicklow, Powerscourt House and the sacred valley of Glendalough. This region hosts an abundance of folklore. Not only does the ghost of Kathleen float beneath the choppy waters of the lake beside St Kevin’s 6th Century monastery, but also hangman, Hempenstall roams the fog-filled Wicklow mountains at dusk and dawn. Be sure to also visit Wicklow Gaol, which housed prisoners for decades; some of whom allegedly continue to meander through the corridors today.

Wicklow Gaol, which has a reputation of being one of the most haunted places in Ireland and as it housed prisoners from Ireland’s various rebellions against British rule, it’s not surprising. There have been sightings of a woman in 19th-century dress and a little girl who appears in the schoolroom.

County Monaghan

Depart Dublin for Co. Monaghan, this is where the beautiful Castle Leslie is located. Visit Dún na Rí Forest Park along the way. With moss covered woods and mist enwrapped, towering green trees, this forest recalls memories from the haunting, enchanting forests of a fairy-tale novel. Roam through the trails carved by roots and vines of the forest’s ancient inhabitants. However, be weary of the spirit of Cú Chulainn, who haunts these lands since his death defending Ulster against the armies of Queen Maeve.

halloween trips ireland

Castle Leslie

Take today to roam the eerie halls and noteworthy grounds of Castle Leslie. Castle Leslie is set amid 1,000 acres of remarkable scenery and has been home to the Leslie family for over three centuries. Several prominent faces have lodged at the castle over the years such as W.B. Yeats, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger. The Castle offers a myriad of activities and pursuits for guests to partake in, including equestrian facilities, falconry, fishing and cycling. However, in the evening, be sure to check out the infamous Red Room, a room said to be haunted by Norman Leslie who died during WWI. Allegedly, his mother Lady Marjorie was sleeping in this room one night and awoke to see his ghost standing near the foot of her bed, looking through some letters. After a while, he turned to her, smiled, and then faded away. Many other anomalies have been reported by visitors of the castle, such as bells ringing by themselves and strange apparitions wandering down corridors.

Ireland's most haunted Castle

Make your way south to Ballyfin Demesne. Along the way you will visit one of Ireland’s most haunted sites, Leap Castle. Leap Castle certainly is home to many secrets of a dark and mysterious past. Over 400 years ago in what is now known as the “Bloody Chapel” a shocking murder occurred between one brother and his priest brother during high mass. Another source of evil at Leap Castle is a hidden ubliet (dungeon) located off the bloody chapel. It was a small room with a drop floor. Those who were forgotten within this room suffered unimaginable pain and misery until their death. Around c.1900 workmen who were hired to clean out the ubliet made a hideous discovery, human skeletons laid piled on top of each other. Because of its extremely bloody history Leap Castle has always had a reputation for being haunted, a reputation so strong local people avoided it at night. Completely gutted by fire, Leap Castle was boarded up and its gates were locked for over 70 years. Locals have described seeing the windows at the top of the castle “light up for a few seconds as if many candles were brought into the room late at night”. The castle laid in ruin for years.

Ballyfin Demense

Ballyfin Demesne

Today, enjoy the grounds of Ballyfin. The boutique Relais & Chateaux property boasts a plethora of activities to partake in, from falconry and archery to boating and fishing. If you opt to take your dose of the spooks today, venture to Kinnitty Castle. It’s said to be haunted by the 11th Earl of Kildare and is most famous for its long and turbulent history. The castle was destroyed in 1209 and was later rebuilt by the Norman’s in 1213.

Galway city

Venture to the Galway today. En route, visit Clonony Castle, a 16th-century Tudor castle built with all the usual features for the period, including a murder hole, mysterious passages, and a three-story tower. It was given by King Henry VIII to Thomas Boleyn in exchange for the hand of his daughter, Anne. Anne’s two cousins (also cousins of Queen Elizabeth I) lived there and were buried on the grounds just a hundred feet from the castle, a fact only re-discovered in 1803. There have been many reported sightings of the ghost of a skeletal being known as ‘The Thin Man’ atop of the tower, an eerie hazy glow surrounding him. Spend the remainder of the day exploring the musical capital of Ireland, Galway. Numerous landmarks and places of historical significance are scattered throughout the City of the Tribes, and one of its best known is The Long Walk. Built as an extension of the vibrant city quays and situated near the well-known Spanish Arch, The Long Walk has served as a favourite walking destination for three centuries. Immortalized in song and works of art, an air of romanticism surrounds of the area. Stories of the strange and unexplained have also been told about this picturesque promenade, and many locals claim the place is a hotbed of hauntings.

Glenlo Abbey

Park House Hotel Galway

Experience the wild Atlantic way, as you explore Connemara. Connemara is the area of Western Galway and South Mayo bounded by the Atlantic and Lough Corrib. It is an area beloved by artists and poets, who find magical inspiration in its wide-open bogs and towering cloud-capped mountains. Cottages nestle into hillsides where wild looking sheep with thick fleeces and great curling horns freely graze. The rugged coastline is punctuated with little fishing villages. Connemara translates as ‘Inlets of the Sea’ and the roads along the peninsula’s filigreed coast bear this out as they wind around the small bays and coves of this breath-taking stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way. While in Connemara, you will visit an oyster farm and partake in a tour and tasting. A picnic lunch will follow this experience, allowing you to further indulge on the fresh oysters, lite sandwiches, and of course a glass of bubbly! Take the remainder of the afternoon to continue explore Connemara, and perhaps visit the famed Kylemore Abbey. The Abbey served as the backdrop for the plight of the Benedictine Nuns, who were forced out of Belgium during WWI. Return to Galway in the evening.

Ireland is the realm of legend and mystery – consider the likes of Cu Chulainn, Fionn Mac Cumhaill, and the Tuathau De Danaan who later went underground in the fairy mounds to become “Na Daoine Sidhe” the Good Folk. Leap Castle is considered the most haunted castle in Ireland, and Castle Leslie has its share of poltergeists; by the banks of the Shannon, you may see a “Phuca” or two. It will take a brave soul to venture amid cold drafts, shrieks and bumps in the night!!!

This is a fantastic adventure tour that includes some of Ireland’s most beautiful scenery, culture, and amazing history. Stay at two of Ireland’s most esteemed and luxurious properties, Kinnitty Castle and Castle Leslie .

Day 1: Birr, Co. Offaly

Arrive Dublin Airport and pick up your rental. Drive to Offaly for your 4-night stay at Kinnitty Castle with a stop en route at Kilkea Castle, built in 1180 and the oldest inhabited Castle in Ireland. Local folklore maintains that the castle is haunted by the ghost of Earl “the Wizard” Gerald and the presence of “evil” symbolized in the famous Evil Eye Stone located there.

Horse-riding and shooting are specialties at Kinnitty Castle, and it is most famous for its long and turbulent history. The castle was destroyed in 1209 and was later rebuilt by the Norman’s in 1213. It’s said to be haunted by the 11th Earl of Kildare.  ( Kinnitty Castle , 4-Nights)

Day 2: Leap Castle

If you dare, you can visit the most haunted castle in Ireland – Leap Castle.

Around c.1900 workmen who where hired to clean out the ubliet made a hideous discovery, human skeletons laid piled on top of each other.

Because of its extremely bloody history Leap Castle has always had a reputation for being haunted, a reputation so strong local people avoided it at night. Completely gutted by fire, Leap Castle was boarded up and its gates were locked for over 70 years. Locals have described seeing the windows at the top of the castle “light up for a few seconds as if many candles were brought into the room” late at night. The castle laid in ruin for years.

Day 3: Charleville Forest Castle & Killua Castle

Today, visit Charleville Forest Castle, complete with Druid’s Initiation Circle as well as dark, spooky catacombs and a tower that the late Charles Bury, First Earl of Charleville, still walks. Many orbs “ghostly balls of light” have been spotted throughout the castle to remind us all that we are not alone.

Drive north to Westmeath to visit Killua Castle, one of the most romantic ruins in the country. Built in 1780 and later converted to the Gothic style, it was owned by the ancestors of Lawrence of Arabia, who visited it himself. The house was long ago abandoned, but when it was still in use, visitors often complained of things that went bump in the night. A white phantom was said to circle the ruins, and a hideous, evil-eyed figure was often sighted within the walls. This spector was said to be the ghost of an 18th century land steward called Jacky Dalton. A small, cunning man with a “weasel eye” and a strange yellow wig, he cheated his master out of a lot of money, then drank it all and committed suicide by throwing himself in the lake. A recipe for an unquiet spirit…

Day 4: Clonony Castle

Visit Clonony Castle. This great, square ruin of a tower in the middle of Offaly looks creepy enough. It dates back to the 16th century, and has a connection with Anne Boleyn, whose cousins are buried in a cave beneath the castle. The ghost that people see is that of a man, seen standing on top of the tower in old-fashioned dress. His identity remains a mystery, but he is still regularly seen by passing motorists at night, who have described a tall, thin, almost skeletal figure, surrounded by a hazy, luminous light. Most unsettling.

Day 5:  Castle Leslie , Glasson, Co Monaghan

Castle Leslie is set amid 1,000 acres of breathtaking scenery. For over 300 years it has been the family home of the eccentric Leslie family and has over successive generations been host to many celebrities such as Sir John Betjeman, WB Yeats,  Mick Jagger, and Paul McCartney. The Castle was designed in the Scottish Baronial style by Charles Lanyon and W.H. Lynn in 1870 AD for Sir John Leslie, 1st Baronet MP. It is situated on the site of an earlier castle and, therefore, it never had any particular defensive purpose.

The Red Room in this beautiful castle is said to be haunted by Norman Leslie, who was killed during the first world war. Apparently his mother Lady Marjorie was sleeping in this room one night and awoke to see his ghost standing near the foot of her bed, apparently looking through some letters. After a while this apparition of her dead son turned to her, smiled, and then faded away. There have been many other strange happenings reported in this fascinating castle, such as bells ringing of their own accord and strange figures wandering down corridors.

Day 6: Glens of Antrim & Giants Causeway

An hour drive north-east of Castle Leslie you reach the provincial capital of Ulster, Belfast. Head for Carrickfergus and then on to Larne, leave the beaten track and follow the spectacular, uncongested coastal route through villages where time has stood still. Enjoy the breath-taking Nine Glens of Antrim . . . cross the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and marvel at Dunluce Castle, perched dramatically on towering cliffs high above the North Channel. Visit the oldest distillery in the world at Bushmills and end the day at the amazing Giant’s Causeway.
