Get The Most Out Of Your Hashtag Strategy

While it’s tempting to go for the top hashtags that have millions of posts, it’s best to keep to this smart strategy:

• About 2 hashtags that have more than 1 million posts
• 6 to 8 that are between 500,000 and 1 million posts
• 6 to 8 that are between 250,000 and 500,000
• 8 to 10 under 250,000

This gives you anywhere between 22 to 28 hashtags that you’re using, enough to give you visibility.

Instagram’s maximum recommended total for hashtags is 30.

I tend to use about 20 hashtags, as that’s my sweet spot – but for me, lately, it’s mostly home decor posts as I’m doing less travelling (that’s when this list of home decor hashtags comes in handy).

Every traveler enjoys taking amazing photos and sharing them on social media with a snappy caption. But posting your favorite photo with a relevant travel hashtags can boost your reach.

The hashtag is one of the easiest ways to amplify your reach and to get your post on top of Instagram .

I know it’s quite boring to find the relevant hashtag for each post. But you don’t have to worry I did it for you.

I researched best travel hashtags for Instagram; test them, So today I’m going to share best Travel Hashtags for Instagram. So grab a cup of coffee because it’s a bit quiet lengthy:

How many instagram hashtags should i use.

There is no certain limit to using hashtags in one single post. But I’ve seen many popular Instagrammer use a maximum of 30 hashtags.

Many Instagram experts suggest 11 hashtag is best for attracting new followers and it best for engagement. But I’m a fan of using all 30 hashtags sometimes it looks spammy but you can use the hashtag in comments as well. There is no difference in their functionality if you use hashtags in comments and captions in both cases it works same.

How do get rank your post at the top of your hashtag feeds?

There is no point of telling you the numbers of hashtags if you don’t know how to use them.

The hashtag can amplify your reach but a great hashtag comes with great responsibility. It’s very difficult to get rank yourself on a hashtag that has more than millions of followers because it has too much competition. It is just like rank on the first page of Google on a keyword that has more than 50% competition.

A big hashtag is easy for getting quick likes and comments but after some time your post getting disappears and then all died.

Let’s reverse this; it is quite easy to get rank on hashtag which has less than 500k follower or less than 1M followers. So try to use those hashtag which <500k or <1M depends on your engagement ratio.

When you rank on top of a smaller hashtag then you get slow engagement but for a long time and you have a good chance to get featured yourself in larger feeds.

Instagram allows you to use max 30 hashtag in one post. So use them smartly:

• 8 Hashtag with more than 1M+ feeds
• 10 Hashtag with 100K to 1M feeds
• 5 Hashtag with less than 100K feeds

Now you left with 7 hashtags use them for location or to define the post or as your mood.

Now you may think that how to find out the hashtag on the basis of feeds but you don’t have to worry at all, I did bucketing of all hashtag on the basis of feeds:

These are the most common and popular travel hashtags on Instagram and hardest to rank on top as well. So use them smartly or I’ll say use them for getting quick likes & comments, because when we are talking about engagement then how much time to get the number of likes & comments also matter:

These are less generic but more useful. Now by using these hashtags, you have a better chance to rank on top in hashtags as compared to the above list. Less number means less competition:

Best Creative Travel Hashtags for Instagram

It has taken some time, but with a lot of trial and error, we have determined what are the best hash tags to use for travel on Instagram.

Should I use Hashtags on Instagram?

The simple answer to this question is yes you should.

The reason why hashtags are so important to use on Instagram is because it means many more eyes on your page.

This translate to more followers and more engagement equaling a Insta-famous star! (Well we can hope!)

In accordance with the policies of Instagram, you are allowed to use 30 Hash Tags .

Different influencers will tell you different theories on how many hash tags is ideal to use.

Some strongly believe you should not use any less than 30. Others believe going too far (aka 30 hash tags) can flag you for Instagram’s spam policy and lead you to become shadow banned.

Oh, and by the way, the notorious shadow ban is NOT a myth! We have personally been shadow banned and it is not at all fun not having people see your post on Instagram. Why go to all the effort to post if no-one is going to see it?

If you don’t know what the term shadow ban means, basically, it means not having your posts appear in hash tags.

Instagram is coy about what will cause your account to be shadow banned but we know from experience one way to get shadow banned is using the same hash tag over and over. Big no no.

So the first point is mixing your hash tags up! Don’t use the same tags on every post or you will be a victim of the notorious and dreaded shadow ban!

Our second tip for you is to place your hash tag in the post description NOT your first comment. Hiding your hash tags may be prettier but this is a method that will result in you being shadow banned.

We have found that around 20 hash tags on our Instagram posts  is the sweet spot in having many entries in the lottery but avoiding the shadow ban.

Okay so first things first, there is no one standard answer for what hash tags you should use.

There is a formula to this so listen carefully. There are two questions to determine which hash tags are best for you!

1. How Large is your following?

The first thing we should consider is how large your following is. Aka how many followers do you have.

This vital piece of information will determine the size of hash tag we can go after:

• 0 – 20,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 10,000 tags
• 20,000 – 40,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 50,000 tags
• 50,000 – 100,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 100,000 tags
• 100,000 – 300,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 300,000 tags
• 300,000 + – Hit them big tags up!

2. What is your engagement rate?

It doesn’t end there though folks. Oh no, that would be way tooo easy and Instagram is anything but easy.

If you have 300,000 followers and an engagement rate of 0.01%, you are not going to appear in top of 300,000+ hash tag.

Whether your followers are engaging and how fast your followers are liking and engaging on your post will determine whether you appear at the top of a hash tag.

If you need to work on your engagement, aim for hash tags in one to two categories down from your follower count.

Remember the aim of the game is to appear at top of hash tags and gain more followers and likes!

• 10 hashtags with feeds of < 250k posts
• 10 hashtags with feeds of < 500k posts
• 8 hashtags with feeds of < 1m posts
• 2 hashtags with feeds of > 1m posts

In case you want to take an alternate strategy you can use this option as well

Instagram allows you to use max 30 hashtag in one post. So use them smartly:

• 8 Hashtag with more than 1M+ feeds
• 10 Hashtag with 100K to 1M feeds
• 5 Hashtag with less than 100K feeds
• Now you left with 7 hashtags use them for a location or to define the post or as your mood.

How Many Travel Hashtags should I Use?

This is one debatable topic where everyone has their own personal preference but I have seen most of the travel Instagrammer using the complete 30 hashtags to exploit the option available.

Many Instagram experts suggest 11 hashtag is best for attracting new followers and it best for engagement. But I’m a fan of using all 30 hashtags sometimes it looks spammy but you can use the hashtag in comments as well. There is no difference in their functionality if you use hashtag in comments and captions in both cases it works same.

So you can post the picture with around 10 hashtags or so and write down the remaining hashtags quickly as your first comment.

One new strategy for Instagram travel hashtags which I use is that I post the content with 10-15 hashtags in starting for it to rank and once the post ranks on the City/Country hashtags and then it starts ranking everywhere else. This worked with my frankfurt post.

What is the trick of curating Photo related Travel Hashtags?

This will come as another strategy for deciding the travel hashtags to use for your next post on Instagram. Let us discuss the CW strategies of Instagram Post. Now the only reason why I am saying CW is that its Chasing Whereabouts .

You should know the W and G of the image which you are posting.

• Where – Where are you

It is best to use the location related hashtags in your picture. Where stands for that. Use the location hashtags for City/Village/town and the country.

• What (what are you doing)

What defines about the activity you are doing in the image. Usually just one hashtag as # walking , # trekking , # cycling , etc

• When (which special day, if any)

I add one hashtag however only if it is a memorable day like # nye  or # germanunityday #diwali #independanceday  or any other day that the photo is about.

Why are you adding the photo? Describe the image with few hashtags (4-5) as:

# market  # building  # street  # tram  # river #sunset  # awesome  # lovely  # amazing  etc

The fantastic thing of Instagram is that meanwhile, you write the hashtag you get a suggestion and the volume; stay below a 10M volume, if you have a choice. If you are a new blogger then stay below 100K.

• Get Ambitious

Add the two popular travel hashtags as discussed above (# travelphotography  and # travelling )

Add two travel hashtags used by the local tourism boards (usually city/area and country). This is the most important step. You may have a great outcome if they love your photo and re-post it, which usually gives wide visibility of your work. You may wake up the day after and have suddenly hundreds more of followers, just thanks to a re-post.

How do you find these local travel hashtags?

You need to google the travel tourism board website and see their Instagram account. Usually, they are the verified account with the name. You can also look for the city name and use the tag for the account which has the maximum followers on it.

• Get technical

Describe the type of photo from a technical perspective if you wish. Popular hashtags are #landscape #portrait #closeup etc. This is the least favourite of all and you can use it if you are running out of hashtags.

These are the most common and popular travel hashtags on Instagram and the hardest to rank on top as well. So use them smartly or I’ll say use them for getting quick likes & comments, because when we are talking about engagement then how much to time to get the number of likes & comments also matter:

Some are more useful but less generic. Now, compared to the above list, you have a greater opportunity to rank at the top of hashtags by using these hashtags. A lower number indicates a lower level of competition:

The results will show you a lot of content related to The Caribbean beaches. There you can either view by “Recent” or “Top”.

How many hashtags should you use

However, Instagram has also provided a “Don’t show for this hashtag” option, which means if you see a photo of a skyscrapers in a city, you can flag to instagram that this photo is not relevant for the tag, and they will remove it from your feed.

So if you use hashtags that aren’t relevant to the associated photo, and numerous people hide it from their feeds, instagram may flag your account and reduce your reach for hashtags.

Do you have a similar engagement rate to the photos in the “top posts” of the hashtags you want to rank for? If you do, then you have a good chance of ranking for it.

If you are a relatively small instagram account (less the 15K followers), it’s good to focus on the smaller volume hashtags to get you going (that have less than 50,000 tags).

Find some hashtags that you think are appropriate for your photo (see below for ideas), go to the top posts for each of those hashtags, and look at the amount of likes/comments it receives, and whether you get a similar amount on your posts.

What Travel Hashtags to use?

The best way is to play the odds. You’ve got 20 hashtags to use. So, spread them across a range of hashtag volumes.

The better your post does on the smaller hashtags, the more likely it is to be shown on the larger ones.

It’s better to rank well on smaller volume tags than not show up at all on huge volume tags.

Based on the size of your account (how may followers and what kind of engagement you get), you should adapt the hashtags accordingly. If you are a smaller account it’s best to focus on ranking for the smaller hashtags first.

If you can rank for these, get seen and then create engagement to your post from accounts that do not follow you (have found you through the search tag) you will start doing well (as far as the algorithm is concerned).

The idea is to create real interest & engagement.

If you start fairly niche it is easier to get seen, by similar accounts.

Start Small & Work Upwards

Let’s go back to the #underthepalmtree example. It’s a low volume tag (5k). But if you really do have a good post about being at the beach with beautiful palm trees, use it. People looking for this inspiration will really engage with your post.

If you get good engagement with your post on these smaller tags, it will help you to rank for the bigger tags.

How to distribute your tags across search volume

The best way to get noticed on the big ranking travel hashtags is to do well on the smaller, then medium sized tags first (on the same post).

Therefore, you should distribute your 20 allowable tags across a variety of ranking hashtags.

It depends on the size of your account. If you have 20K followers or below . Your travel hashtag ranking distribution should look something like this:

• 10K Posts (or under) – Use 2 Hashtags
• 10K – 50K Posts (or under) – Use 6 Hashtags
• 50K – 250K Posts (or under) – Use 5 Hashtags
• 250K – 1M Posts (or under) – Use 4 Hashtags
• 1M – 5M (or under) – Use 1 Hashtag
• 5M – 10M – Use 1 Hashtag
• Above 10M – Use 1 Hashtag
• TOTAL = 20 Hashtags

If you have above 20K followers , have more in the higher tier. Ie, start from the 50K and up. Use the extra 7 tags spread towards the top.

Within travel there are several different categories. You account might span across a few. When you use your travel hashtags you will therefore want to target these different travel niches.

Should I Copy & Paste Instagram Hashtags?

You can have a series of travel hashtags that you use. But remember, do not use them on consecutive posts.

It’s best to have at least 5 different series of travel hashtags that you can use through the week. Use an app like Notes to save your general travel niches series and rotate them every 5 or more posts.

Then on each post use your location related posts (different ones for consecutive days).

Don’t plagiarise another account (copy their exact hashtags and use them on your own).

Instagram is still a form of art and self expression. By copying someone’s work (even the hashtags) you are making yourself susceptible to plagiarism.

Apart from the legal perspective. It’s just not cool. Be inspired, but use your own imagination.

If someone you follow does a post and uses some hashtags that get them good engagement, see if you can incorporate a few of these into your own series, however don’t straight up copy the whole 20.

When Instagram ditched the  chronological feed , it is no longer sure that our followers will see our content as they scroll their feed. The popular section shows content with your select travel hashtag with the most engagement, while the ‘most recent’ shows recently posted content.

Choosing the right hashtags for your travel content largely depends on the travel niche you are in. 

As you know, the travel niche is quite broad and has many different facets and sub-niches that can range from luxury travel to adventure.

To get you up to speed, I broke down a few travel niches with the best Instagram hashtags.

Instagram Travel Hashtags for Luxury Travel

If you have pictures and videos of staying in luxury villas in the Maldives, or traveling in-style like flying in first class, then the following luxury travel hashtags below will come in handy. Let’s take a few of them below:

1. #luxurytravel – 6.3 million posts

The standard luxury travel hashtag for your content. Considering this hashtag has over 6.3 million posts, much of the content that is prioritized on the search page has followers that are over 50K. 

2. #luxurytravelandhotels – More than 1000 posts

If you have content that features super expensive and luxury hotels in Bali or the Maldives, then the #luxurytravelandhotels hashtag is the perfect hashtag for your content. 

3. #luxurytraveldaily – 76.6K posts

The #luxurytraveldaily is an excellent hashtag if you have extra content lying around that you want to post to inspire your followers. 

4. #luxurytravelblogger – 48.6K posts

The hashtag #luxurytravelblogger focuses more on the individual (blogger or influencer) than the actual luxury travel itself. This is a great hashtag to use because it is not as competitive with only 48 thousand posts. Much of the Instagram profiles that are included in the popular search have under 10 thousand followers. 

5. #luxurytravelagent – 31K posts

#Luxurytravelagent is a useful hashtag if you have a travel online business! The popular page’s content is a mix of people (the travel agents) and the destination they are offering. 

6. #luxurytravels – 135K posts

Not to be confused with the first hashtag! The #luxurytravels hashtag has one more letter at the end, but with fewer posts to compete with. Many of the Instagram accounts on the popular search page features accounts with less than 25 thousand followers. 

7. #luxurytravelguide – More than 5000 posts

The #luxurytravelguide hashtag has only 5000 posts on the search page, but much of the content is getting high engagements with likes averaging 300 and above. 

8. #luxuryhotel – 2.6 million posts

The #luxuryhotel hashtag is a little bit more competitive than #luxurytravelandhotels hashtag, which might be a little bit of a disadvantage for Instagram accounts with fewer followers. 

9. #firstclass – 1.3 million posts

Mixing it up a bit and taking the word luxury out of the hashtag! If you are traveling in luxury, chances are you are going to be flying in first class. Don’t miss this popular hashtag when you take a picture of your seat in first class.

10. #firstclasslounge – 19.7k posts

If you fly in first class, there’s no doubt you will be spending some time in fancy first-class lounges. There are plenty of Instagrammable first-class lounges in the world, so make sure to take plenty of pictures and videos!

Instagram Travel Hashtags for Digital Nomads

In recent years, the rise of digital nomads has opened an endless list of Instagram hashtags for people to discover the lifestyle of working while traveling the world. If you are a digital nomad that want to take your Instagram page to the next level, below are the following hashtags for you to use:

11. #digitalnomad – 3 million posts

The hashtag #digitalnomad has over three million posts and is a standard post for many digital nomad contents. 

12. #digitalnomads – 714K posts

#Digitalnomads is a variation of the first hashtag, with an extra’s’ at the end. The variation has only 714 thousand posts, which is a lot easier to be featured on the search page than the first hashtag. 

13. #digitalnomadspirit – 20.1K posts

The digital nomad spirit hashtag features content from Instagram users showing their work and travel lifestyle. The hashtag only has 20.1K posts, which is pretty easy to be featured on the search page. 

14. #digitalnomadlifestyle – 98.1K posts

#Digitalnomadlifestyle has over 98.1K posts, both containing pictures and videos. Although the hashtag is quite competitive with over 98.1K posts, much of the account on the featured page has less than 10 thousand followers. 

15. #digitalnomadoffice – More than 1000 posts

The #digitalnomadoffice has over 1000 posts and is easy to be featured on the search explore page. If you have content working alongside the beach or in a trendy café somewhere around the world, make sure to include this hashtag and your post!

16. #digitalnomadbali – More than 1000 posts

Bali is one of the digital nomad hot spots in recent years. The city has trendy cafés with high-speed wifi, which is the perfect place for Digital Nomads!

17. #digitalnomadchiangmai – More than 5000 posts

Whereas Bali is a new hot spot for digital nomads, the city of Chiang Mai in Thailand has been the original hot spot for Digital Nomads. It has everything a digital nomad would want: cheap accommodation, high-speed wifi, and trendy cafés for people to work!

The adventure travel hashtag is for the thrill-seekers who have content to show for it! Let’s take a look at the different types of hashtags you can post on Instagram. 

21. #adventure – 103 million posts

The adventure hashtag is the standard hashtag for this niche. It contains over 103 million posts, most of which come from accounts with over 50 thousand followers.

22. #adventuretime – 13.4 million posts

Adventure time hashtag features content with a mixture of landscape and activity related pictures and videos. The total post for this hashtag is over 13.4 million posts, which is a lot easier to be featured than the #adventure hashtag.  

23. #adventurebike – 407K posts

What are Instagram hashtags?

A hashtag is a combination of letters, numbers, and/or emoji preceded by the # symbol (e.g., #NoFilter). Instagram hashtags are used to categorize or label content and make it more discoverable.

How to add hashtags on Instagram

You can add hashtags to the caption of your Instagram post or Reel, or include them in text elements on your Instagram Story. They are a great way to expand your Instagram audience and get more reach .

For instance, if you’ve posted a photo of a skunk on a surfboard, you might pair it with the caption “The waves really stink today #surfing #surflife #animalssurfing #skunks #wildlifewednesday.”

Creating a hashtag on Instagram couldn’t be easier: just type the hashtag symbol (#) followed by a word. You can even add numbers to hashtags on Instagram… emojis, too! #prettycool2023🤯

You can either make up your own hashtag (#skunkswhosurf), or add one that other people are already using — like #surflife , which has more than three million posts.

And if you want to be  really  sneaky? You can even hide your hashtags.

To hide a hashtag on an Instagram post or Reel, just add it as a comment instead of a caption.

You might also want to write the caption, hit the return button several times, and adding a caption a few lines down. That way, the hashtags will be hidden unless a viewer expands the caption.

If you’re adding a hashtag to an Instagram Story, make the text element very, very, very small and move it somewhere on the image or video where it can blend in. You might also consider layering another visual element over top to bury it, like a sticker. ( Learn more Instagram Story hacks here. )

How to view Instagram hashtags

Anyone who conducts an Instagram hashtag search will see a page showing all the posts, Stories and Reels tagged with that hashtag.

Hashtags are also clickable. Anyone who clicks on an Instagram hashtag will view all other posts that use the same hashtag.

People can also choose to follow hashtags, which means they can see your hashtagged post in their feed even if they don’t follow you (yet!).

By the same token, though, people can also choose to  block  hashtags.

While you can’t block hashtags that are posted by accounts you follow, you can create a block to prevent certain hashtags from appearing in your suggested content.

• Go to your profile and tap the hamburger menu (those three horizontal lines at the top-right).
• Tap Settings , then Suggested content .
• Tap Specific words and phrases , and then add the hashtag or keywords you’d like to hide.

How to find trending hashtags on Instagram

Unlike Twitter, Instagram doesn’t publicize a list of trending hashtags. (Why you so shy, Insta?!)

However, if you search for a hashtag on Instagram, you’ll see how many posts use that hashtag. You’ll also see a list of other popular Instagram hashtags using similar words, with post counts included too.

To search for a hashtag on desktop, enter the hashtag including the # symbol into the search box. On mobile, enter your search term in the search box, then tap Tags.

If you’re paying attention to your Instagram feed, you’ll learn to quickly spot trending hashtags as they emerge. Don’t be too quick to jump on a trend, though. Only post using a trending hashtag if it really makes sense for your business, and for the specific content in your post.

How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?

For best results, limit yourself to 3 to 5 hashtags per Instagram post (or Story, or Reel).

Technically, you’re allowed to   post up to 30 hashtags … but too many hashtags can look spammy and may even hurt your reach.

This advice is coming straight from Instagram itself , but if you want more evidence that sticking to 3 to 5 Instagram hashtags is a good idea, we actually put this to the test.

And remember: Instagram’s search tool also analyzes the actual content of your captions, too… so hashtags aren’t your only way to make an impression. Write informative, clear captions packed with search terms and keywords to take advantage of social SEO .

Types of popular Instagram hashtags

There are really no rules about what an Instagram hashtag can be, but you can loosely sort hashtags into one of these 10 categories:

Product or service hashtags

These are basic keywords to describe your product or service, like #handbag or #divebar

Niche hashtags

These get a little more specific, showing where you fit in the context of your industry, like #travelblogger or #foodblogger

Industry Instagram community hashtags

Communities exist on Instagram, and these hashtags help you find and join them. Think #gardenersofinstagram or #craftersofinstgram

Obviously you don’t want to be a copycat. But there’s always lots to learn from watching others in your industry. What’s working for them? What community groups might they be tapping into with their tag strategy? What hashtags are they using that you definitely want to avoid ?

Limit your hashtags to 3 to 5 on Instagram . Yes, you technically can include up to 30, but we’ve discovered that fewer is really going to get you better engagement and reach.

Study your analytics

Incorporate your hashtags at the end

Pop your hashtags at the end of your caption (or even post them in a comment!) instead of incorporating them into the text. Using hashtags in the middle of your captions or comments might make your content less accessible to people using text-to-speech readers.

Pick the best hashtags, not the most popular ones

Choose hashtags that will attract quality followers, not just a large quantity of followers. Just because a hashtag like #followme has millions of posts doesn’t mean that it’s going to pull in the kind of target audience you actually want — you might find your follower count jump with bots and spammers, which could be a turn-off for real potential customers.

Look for hashtags that accurately represent what you’re all about, whether that’s a literal description of your product or services (#bookstore), or a shout-out to a community that you’re part of (#bookloversofinstagram). Ideally, aim for a mix of broad hashtags and niche ones that all are relevant and meaningful to your brand and audience.

Want to search for multiple Instagram hashtags at once?

The Instagram app itself doesn’t actually work well for multiple hashtag searches (though because of its improved keyword searchability , you might find some relevant results anyways).

For more accurate search results for multiple hashtags on Instagram, head to Google and search “site.instagram.com” followed by all the hashtags your heart desires. This will pull up posts tagged with all of the indicated hashtags.

Don’t repeat yourself

It might be tempting to simply copy and paste the same long list of hashtags on every post, but don’t do it.

Instagram’s community guidelines clearly state that “posting repetitive comments or content” is not okay. If you use the same hashtags for every post, your content will be penalized by the Instagram algorithm .

Check the hashtag’s meaning

Because hashtags are sometimes made up of multiple words running together (#hereisanexample), misunderstandings can sometimes happen. Proofread any new hashtags with a dirty mind to make sure you catch any accidental swears.

If you’re using slang or an acronym, it’s wise to do a quick search to make sure you’re not accidentally posting something offensive, too. Maybe at your store, “B.D.E.” means “Big Deals Everyday!” but the internet might have another idea all together.

Hide your hashtags (if you want!)

If you find your hashtags are distracting from your incredible caption, you can always tuck them away out of sight. You can do this by either placing them several lines below the caption (which will keep them hidden unless someone clicks “see more”) or pop them into a separate comment.

Choose diverse hashtags

Instead of picking five hashtags that are variations on a theme (#dogs, #puppies, #doggos, #goodboys, #furryfriends), try to hit different types of search terms with each of your tags.

For instance, maybe one hashtag is related to your location (#boston) while another attempts to connect with community (#dogmoms) and another promotes your branded contest (#staceyssummerdogfashioncontest).

Don’t use banned hashtags

Some hashtags—like #nudity or #youngmodel—get used inappropriately so frequently by users that Instagram basically hides them away.

(Rumor has it that using banned hashtags might even get you shadowbanned but… well, the jury is still out on that .)

Some of these tags are blacklisted temporarily, others permanently, but it’s hard to predict exactly what will be ruined next (we’ve seen websites claim that #skateboarding is banned! Why! What did you guys do?!) so it’s a good idea to double-check that your fave hashtags are working before you go ahead and schedule that post.

Using hashtags on Instagram is a relatively simple process, but you’ll want to adhere to a few rules to get the most out of your hashtagging.

We’ve compiled best practices under the following frequently asked questions.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Thirty hashtags are the maximum number you can use.

According to HubSpot research, the average is seven , with only 1% of Instagram accounts using all 30 hashtags. You can use more or less depending on your Instagram marketing goals. More doesn’t necessarily mean better. In fact, Instagram recommends users include no more than three to five hashtags per post.

Should I add hashtags to every Instagram post?

Yes! Absolutely you should.

Try to choose hashtags that are as narrow or as niche as possible. The less volume of posts a hashtag has, the more likely you’ll be seen by people who follow them. Plus, if the subject matter is highly specific, people are more likely to engage with your post.

All of my posts are similar. Can I use the same hashtags over and over again?

No. Instagram’s algorithm may penalize you for consistently using the same hashtags, pushing your posts down so they don’t show up for those tags.

Try rotating out your hashtags so that they’re highly relevant to that specific post, even if the posts are similar. Let’s say that you own a handmade pasta business. If you always use the hashtag #spaghetti but post photos of linguini, macaroni, and penne, Instagram may flag your account, and users won’t engage.

Can I hide the hashtags in a comment?

Absolutely. You can hide your hashtags in a comment. Instagram doesn’t distinguish between caption hashtags and comment hashtags.

Simply write your caption as you would. After that, navigate to the published post and leave a comment with your hashtags. They will be hidden completely until users navigate to the comment section.

How do I hide hashtags in the caption?

Don’t want to post the hashtags in a comment? No worries.

You can hide the hashtags in the caption by either 1) writing a caption that’s more than three lines long or 2) adding 3 to 5 line breaks with a punctuation mark.

To add a line break, place the text cursor at the end of your caption and hit Return. Don’t forget to add either a period, a dash, an asterisk, or a tilde to ensure that line stays there. (If there’s no punctuation, Instagram may treat it as accidental extra space, and delete those line breaks upon publication.)

Are there any hashtags I should avoid using?

Yes. Instagram maintains a list of banned hashtags. However, they don’t publish this list, and there’s no authoritative source.

Some are intuitive, such as NSFW and self-harm hashtags, while others, such as #pushups and #mustfollow, aren’t as self-evident. If you have any doubts about your hashtags, be sure to look them up using the app’s Search function.

If it doesn’t show up, it’s banned. If it does show up, navigate to the hashtag feed and check for a message like this:

If your prospective hashtag doesn’t have a message like this, you’re all good to go.

• Figure out your magic number.

1. Keep your hashtags organized.

To create an efficient hashtag system, you can use Excel or an Instagram analytics tool. If you choose an Excel sheet, you'll need to manually keep track of which hashtags you use, how often, and which ones correlate to your most popular posts. Over time, you'll see relationships between certain hashtags and your most popular posts, and this can help you decide which hashtags work best for your brand.

If you have a more advanced social media team, you might want to consider a tool like HubSpot Social Media Management , Meltwater or Iconosquare . These tools store top hashtags and offer reports on which hashtags reach the most people.

For smaller businesses with limited budgets, Krystal Wu says, "An Excel sheet is the best way to start. Once you get more advanced I would highly recommend using a tool to track the data. A manual system can get overwhelming when you're posting three times a day and using about 20 hashtags per post."

2. Figure out your magic number.

Most top brands use seven or fewer hashtags per post, so it's easy to assume that's the magic number for everyone … right? Krystal explains that this isn't always the case: She told me HubSpot has been more successful with hashtags ranging in the low 20s. And recent HubSpot research says that posts with 11 or more hashtags are the top performers.

The point is, you can't know how many hashtags work best for you until you start testing. For HubSpot, it took the team several months to find a number that worked best, and during our trial period, we ranged from seven to 30. Give yourself the same flexibility for trial and error.

3. Narrow your hashtags.

There are two big reasons more specific, smaller-volume hashtags are better for your brand: first, you can compete in a smaller pool. HubSpot, for example, doesn't typically use the hashtag #marketing because it's too broad. If you search #marketing, you'll find pictures of restaurants, inspirational quotes, before-and-after hairstyle pictures, and memes.

The randomness of #marketing leads me to the second reason specific hashtags are a good idea — as a user, I'm more likely to find what I need if I search for something specific, and when your business comes up for my specific search request, I'm more likely to be happy with what I found.

Krystal explains: "Keeping a hashtag close to the interests of your brand really helps. We try to use hashtags tailored for a specific topic and then narrow it down further — for instance, we'd use #SEOTips if our marketing post was mostly about SEO."

Think of it this way: #dogs is more popular, but it has a wide demographic. If I search #goldenretrieverpuppies and I find your post, I'm more likely to engage with it because it's exactly what I wanted.

4. Research what other people are hashtagging.

An easy way to generate hashtag ideas is to make a list of your followers or competitors and research what they're hashtagging on their own photos. It can also be particularly helpful to research what influencers in your industry are hashtagging — by definition, influencers are people with a large social media following, so they must be doing something right.

5. Test out related hashtags.

When you type a hashtag into Instagram's search bar, Instagram shows you related hashtags in the scroll-down menu. Instagram also delivers related hashtags on the next page after you click on a hashtag. This is a simple way to create a longer list of hashtags to try out.

6. Follow your own hashtag.

Another way to use Instagram hashtags for your marketing purposes is to follow your own hashtag. Krystal explains, "On Instagram, I actually follow the hashtag #hubspot so I can find anyone who talks about us and connect with them. As long as your account isn't private, people will be able to find you via the hashtag."

Following your own hashtag is an effective way to engage with other people talking about your brand and develop better relationships with them.

7. Create a brand campaign hashtag.

This is the trickiest item on the list, but if done successfully, it can pay off big time. Some businesses have successfully attracted followers by creating their own campaign hashtags. A campaign hashtag needs to be funny, clever, or at least memorable to work.

Campaign hashtags are particularly useful for promoting a new product or upcoming event, or even just inspiring people. Red Bull, for example, encouraged followers to post Red Bull pictures with a #putacanonit hashtag (see what I mean about clever?). Lululemon, rather than running a more traditional ad campaign, developed a positive connotation for their brand by asking followers to post real, active pictures of themselves with a #sweatlife hashtag .

Now that we've covered the importance of using Instagram hashtags for your business, you might be wondering how to search for Instagram hashtags within the app, or how to use the search function to find related ideas. If you're unsure of the technical process for hashtag searching, here's how:

To search hashtags on Instagram, tap the magnifying glass at the bottom of your screen, then tap the search bar at the top. Selecting the "Tags" option will enable you to search hashtags and related hashtags based on the popularity of each one.

1. Open Instagram and tap the search icon.

Instagram wants you to use hashtags and has made it extremely easy to find the perfect ones for your post. To start, open the Instagram app on your mobile device and tap the magnifying glass at the bottom of your screen.

2. Tap the search bar at the top of your screen.

The search screen on your Instagram might first send you to a newsfeed-style page (the Explore page) with suggested content based on topics you've demonstrated an interest in on social media. To switch to a hashtag search, tap the search bar at the top of this page, as shown in the screenshot above.

3. Tap "Tags."

Once you've tapped the search bar at the top of your screen, Instagram will give you four options with which to filter your search. Instagram refers to hashtags as simply "Tags," as shown in the screenshot below. Tap this "Tags" option, then tap the search bar above it, and begin searching topics for which you want to find a trending hashtag.

You don't have to include the pound sign (#) in your search — your results will be the same with or without it — but you will need to use this pound sign in the caption of your photo once you choose a hashtag.

4. Browse hashtags based on post count and current content.

Voila! You should see multiple options for hashtags based on your search. Browse around at each related hashtag that Instagram suggests for you — you might find that a hashtag with slightly fewer posts includes photos or videos that are more in line with the content you're posting.

Stunning police brutality will ignite a student anti-war movement in America

There is some truth to the popular protest slogan: ‘They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds’

U niversity students across the US have been protesting since 7 October 2023 with vigils, rallies and marches asking for a ceasefire in Gaza and for their universities to divest from Israel. While some of these protests led to heated fights about foreign policy, the most prominent events have involved university presidents’ abysmal congressional testimony. This week’s arrests of more than 100 Columbia students reinvigorated the student movement and now it’s kicking off everywhere.

As a sociologist of social movements, I study how movements select and shift tactics to elicit a response from their opponents. Over the next few weeks, we will see dozens of other university encampments spring up because activists have found a tactic that gets the administration’s attention at a critical time: during finals and commencement.

In 2011, I was an organizer at Occupy LA and ended up writing my dissertation about distributed networked social movements. The Occupy movement’s growth was aided by social media, then an emerging technology popular with young people, and the invention of the smartphone, capable of using apps and streaming video.

With the global wave of Occupy protests, the mobile phone was converted into a political tool imbued with the powers of narrative and broadcast. Occupy protesters were not able to control the narrative about the movement, but they certainly could share their own reality and invite other social media users to do so too.

Every person with a smartphone who entered these Occupy encampments behaved like a journalist, documenting everything they saw. Some even defined themselves as “citizen journalists” and formed ad hoc network of streamers across the globe. Activists became micro-celebrities online and some were able to make money by broadcasting live, monologuing about everything they were seeing.

But, what kicked off Occupy’s popularity was not their messaging about the economic crisis, it was viral clips of police abuse and suppression.

In late September 2011, all eyes turned to Occupy NYC, located in Zuccotti Park, as a clip circulated on Twitter of a group of young women getting pepper-sprayed by the NYPD. Alongside the video was the hashtag #OPpigroast, urging the online crowd to identify the officer behind the violence. A photographer had taken a picture of that same cop earlier in the day, with his name tag visible. Digital sleuths, known collectively as anonymous, got to work, unearthing everything they could find about him, his family and his employer.

For the final months of 2011, I visited a number of Occupy encampments and interviewed hundreds of protesters about what inspired them to get involved. Many recalled this video of police violence which made them sympathize with the protesters. Several interviewees remarked that they initially had come to “witness” what was happening at their local encampment and then stayed for various reasons, including believing in the movement’s message, meeting new people, and finding a role they could take on.

Since then, I’ve studied many other movements and noted, like other social movement scholars, a chilling pattern between state violence and movement participation. For example, Indigenous activists have organized for environmental issues for decades, but the general public only became aware of what was going down in Standing Rock after Democracy Now shared footage of protesters being attacked by officers with guard dogs and pepper spray.

That catalyzed several hundred solidarity protests across the US and Canada under the name #NoDAPL. The civil rights movement’s lunch counter sit-ins, Bloody Sunday in Selma and the freedom rides, culminated in media coverage of police violence. Even the spread of the Occupy movement was inspired by state violence against protesters in Tahrir Square.

Media mobilizes movements, so coverage of police repression of peaceful protest is often met with more protests. At times, the protest itself may morph to become focused on the immediate issue at hand: the state’s use of violence as a means to punish without due process and deter future activism.

For today’s anti-war protesters, they have all the infrastructure they need to broadcast a narrative about their beliefs directly to a global village. Individually, they’ve been practicing for this moment for years by becoming accustomed to using their phones as political tools. While the Occupy movement and advances in technology inspired new journalists to publish lots of raw and unfiltered content in 2011, generation Z was born in it and are more digitally savvy than any group before. In many respects, the youth of today have a ready-made infrastructure to shift control and buckle institutions, but the key will be for students to sustain the pressure to ensure they meet their goals. It’s hypocritical for universities to be bastions of knowledge and guardians of free inquiry, who then will not disclose certain relationships with donors; including corporations and governments.

Today’s student protesters struggled to find a tactic that could escalate their grievances to the upper echelons of the administration, where students – and even most staff and faculty – often have no insight. Critically, students picked a critical time as administrators want the grounds to look as pristine as possible with commencement coming up. While all tactics eventually expire as the opposition learns to counter the moves of the protesters, student protesters have the upper hand now. If students can find a way to build momentum throughout the summer months, it’s possible this issue will be a major factor in November’s election.

The aftermath at Columbia University should be instructive for other universities facing similar protests, the repression and suspension of students leads to more sustained protest and broader participation. More students join in, if only just to witness. By suspending so many students, they now have very little to keep them from organizing and drawing attention to the encampments popping up across the US. Activist tactics are mimicked, like memes: when they hit, they resonate, but the effect can be short-lived unless it gets remixed.

There is some truth to the popular protest slogan: “They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds.”

As we’ve mentioned, Instagram advised creators to use between 3-5 hashtags on their posts, despite allowing up to 30.
