While ads are an excellent way to keep resources free, they can take up too much space or spoil the browsing experience. This is one of the reasons ad blockers are a welcome addition. However, some websites don’t work properly when ad blockers are used. In this case, you can turn off the AdBlock in Safari.

How to Turn off Ad Block in Safari on iPhone iPad and Mac

When you turn off ad block in Safari, you essentially disable anything that can stop the ads. This includes the built-in content blockers and any added extensions. But can you disable the ad blockers in Safari for a single website? Let’s find out.

Should You Disable AdBlock in Safari and What Happens When You Do

Before we go ahead and disable ad blockers in Safari, let us quickly look at what happens when the full force of ads is finally unleashed on your browser.

  • Websites may load slowly: Ad blockers eliminate any extra ad content on the page, allowing sites to load faster. However, when they’re turned off, it might cause certain sites to load slowly as they load with the ads.
  • Trackers enabled: Certain website ads and other page elements contain trackers that help websites track your activity. While most ad blockers usually disable them, they will be enabled again once you remove the ad blockers.
  • Websites will load normally: Website elements might be picked up by ad blockers as ads, causing them to hide. This can cause websites to break or not load properly once the ad blockers are enabled.
  • Lifting restrictions: Some websites actively check if you’re using ad blockers. Once detected, they keep asking you to support them or stop you from accessing the site content until you disable the ad blocker and reload the page.
  • Support the Creators: While ads can be a nightmare, they can be extremely helpful in supporting the creator behind the website. Especially if they’re an independent entity. So, occasionally, it is good to turn off ad blockers to support your favorite websites.

While the reasons to enable or disable ad blockers can be many, it all comes down to your requirements. If the ad blockers are interfering with website content or are entirely blocked, you will have no option but to disable them.

How to Disable Safari AdBlocker on iPhone and iPad

The ease of using extensions in Safari on your iPhone and iPad to block ads helps make the online browsing experience easy. However, these extensions can also adversely affect and block important page elements. To prevent that, here’s how to disable ad blockers in Safari on your iPhone and iPad.

In this case, you must first turn off the content blockers and uninstall the extensions. This will help do away with ad blockers in Safari on your Mac. Here’s how:

1. Using Website Settings

Step 1: Open Safari and go to the menu options. Here, click on Safari.

Step 2: Then click on Settings.

Open Safari settings

Step 3: From the menu options, select Websites.

Step 4: Then click on Content Blockers from the left-side menu.

Open Content Blockers settings

Step 5: Here, use the currently opened website’s drop-down menu and change it to Off. This will help you disable ad block on many websites at once.

Step 6: Or, if you wish to disable it for all the websites, go down and click on the ‘When visiting other websites’ drop-down.

Step 7: Then, select Off.

Select the Off option

This will disable the native content blockers for all websites, regardless of whether they’re currently open. If you have any external ad block extensions installed, they will continue to function accordingly. In this case, use the extensions settings to disable them separately. Here’s how.

2. Disabling Extensions

Step 1: Open Safari on your Mac. Then, from the menu options, click on Safari.

Step 2: Here, click on Settings.

Step 3: Click on Extensions to see the currently installed extensions.

Step 4: Here, click on the ad blocker extension you wish to remove.

Step 5: Click on Uninstall.

Step 1: Open Safari on Mac and go to the relevant website.

Step 2: Then, click on Safari from the menu options and click on Settings for the website.

Open website settings

Step 3: Here, uncheck the Enable content blockers option.

Introduction

Safari, the widely used web browser developed by Apple, is known for its sleek interface, robust security features, and seamless integration with Apple devices. One of the features that users often encounter while browsing the web is the ad blocker. While ad blockers can help enhance the browsing experience by reducing intrusive ads, there are instances where users may need to disable this feature. Whether it's to support a favorite website, access specific content, or troubleshoot browsing issues, knowing how to disable the ad blocker on Safari can be valuable.

In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of ad blockers on Safari and provide a comprehensive guide on how to disable this feature. By understanding the underlying mechanisms of ad blocking and following the step-by-step instructions, users can gain more control over their browsing experience and make informed decisions about when to enable or disable ad blocking on Safari. Let's embark on this journey to unravel the mysteries of ad blockers and empower ourselves with the knowledge to navigate the digital landscape with confidence.

Understanding Ad Blocker on Safari

Ad blocker, a prevalent feature in modern web browsers, serves as a shield against intrusive advertisements that often disrupt the browsing experience. Safari, Apple's flagship browser , incorporates a built-in ad blocker that aims to enhance user privacy and streamline web content consumption. This feature works by identifying and blocking various types of ads, including pop-ups, banners, and autoplay videos, thereby creating a more seamless and distraction-free browsing environment.

The ad blocker in Safari operates through a combination of techniques, including pattern matching, content analysis, and resource blocking. By analyzing the structure and behavior of web elements, the ad blocker can effectively distinguish between ad content and legitimate website components. This enables Safari to selectively suppress ads while allowing essential website elements to load unhindered.

Furthermore, Safari's ad blocker leverages a database of known ad servers and patterns to proactively prevent ad content from being fetched and displayed. This proactive approach significantly reduces the likelihood of encountering intrusive ads, contributing to a more streamlined and enjoyable browsing experience for users.

It's important to note that while ad blockers offer numerous benefits, they can also impact the revenue streams of content creators and publishers who rely on ad-based monetization. As a result, some websites may request users to disable ad blockers to support their content or access specific features. Understanding the functionality of the ad blocker on Safari empowers users to make informed decisions about when to disable this feature, thereby striking a balance between a clutter-free browsing experience and supporting content creators.

By gaining insights into the inner workings of the ad blocker on Safari, users can navigate the digital landscape with a deeper understanding of how ad blocking technology shapes their online interactions. This knowledge forms the foundation for effectively managing ad blocker settings and optimizing the browsing experience based on individual preferences and ethical considerations.

Steps to Disable Ad Blocker on Safari

Disabling the ad blocker on Safari is a straightforward process that grants users the flexibility to adjust their browsing preferences based on specific needs or website requirements. Whether it's to support favorite content creators, access ad-dependent features, or troubleshoot website compatibility issues, knowing how to disable the ad blocker empowers users to make informed decisions about their browsing experience. Here's a comprehensive guide outlining the steps to disable the ad blocker on Safari:

Accessing Safari Preferences : To initiate the process, launch the Safari browser on your Mac or iOS device. Next, navigate to the "Safari" menu located in the top-left corner of the screen and select "Preferences" from the dropdown menu. This action opens the Safari Preferences window, where various browser settings and features can be configured.

Navigating to the Websites Tab : Within the Safari Preferences window, locate and click on the "Websites" tab. This section provides a comprehensive overview of website-specific settings, including those related to content blockers, notifications, and more.

Selecting Content Blockers : Under the "Websites" tab, find and select "Content Blockers" from the left-hand sidebar. This action reveals the content blocker settings, allowing users to manage the behavior of ad blockers and other content-blocking extensions on a per-website basis.

Disabling Ad Blocker for Specific Websites : In the Content Blockers section, users can view a list of websites for which ad blocking is enabled. To disable the ad blocker for a specific website, simply locate the website in the list and uncheck the box next to "Enable content blockers." This action instructs Safari to allow ads and other blocked content when visiting the selected website.

Customizing Ad Blocker Settings : For more granular control over ad blocking, users can click on the "Details" button next to the Content Blockers section. This opens a window where specific ad blocking rules and settings for individual websites can be customized, providing a tailored approach to managing ad blocker behavior based on unique preferences and requirements.

By following these steps, users can effectively disable the ad blocker on Safari, granting them the flexibility to support content creators, access ad-dependent features, and tailor their browsing experience to align with specific website requirements. This level of control empowers users to strike a balance between ad-free browsing and supporting the digital ecosystem, ultimately enhancing their overall web browsing experience on Safari.

In conclusion, the ability to disable the ad blocker on Safari provides users with a valuable tool for customizing their browsing experience and navigating the evolving landscape of online content. By gaining a deeper understanding of the ad blocker's functionality and following the step-by-step guide to disable this feature, users can harness the power to support content creators, access ad-dependent features, and tailor their browsing environment based on individual preferences.

The seamless integration of ad blocking capabilities within Safari underscores Apple's commitment to user privacy and a streamlined browsing experience. The proactive nature of Safari's ad blocker, which leverages pattern matching and content analysis, contributes to a clutter-free web environment while mitigating the impact of intrusive ads. This, in turn, enhances user satisfaction and fosters a more immersive online experience.

However, it's essential to recognize the broader implications of ad blocking and strike a balance between ad-free browsing and supporting the digital ecosystem. Content creators and publishers rely on ad-based monetization to sustain their operations and produce valuable content. By selectively disabling the ad blocker for specific websites, users can contribute to the sustainability of online content while enjoying ad-supported features and services.

Moreover, the granular control offered by Safari's ad blocker settings empowers users to make informed decisions about when to enable or disable ad blocking based on ethical considerations and individual preferences. This level of control aligns with Apple's commitment to empowering users with tools to manage their digital experiences effectively.

In essence, the ability to disable the ad blocker on Safari represents a pivotal aspect of user empowerment and ethical browsing practices. By embracing a nuanced approach to ad blocking, users can support the digital content ecosystem while enjoying a tailored and immersive browsing experience. This balance between user empowerment and ethical considerations underscores the significance of understanding and effectively managing ad blocker settings on Safari , ultimately shaping a more harmonious and sustainable digital landscape.

There is no native Ad-blocking included with iOS/iPadOS.

If you have elected to install an Ad-blocker App from the App Store on your iPad, the App should have appropriate guidance on its setup and use. However, depending upon the Ad-blocker that you have installed, if installed at all, it will either be implemented via Safari - or via VPN.

Safari-based Ad-blockers can usually be disabled from Safari settings:

Settings > Safari > Content Blockers - disable as necessary

VPN-based Ad-blockers may need to have the corresponding App uninstalled - or the associated VPN profile removed from VPN settings:

Settings > VPN

Block pop-up ads and windows in Safari

Learn how to block pop-up windows and handle persistent ads on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Pop-ups can be ads, notices, offers, or alerts that open in your current browser window, in a new window, or in another tab. Some pop-ups are third-party ads that use phishing tactics such as warnings or prizes to trick you into believing they’re from Apple or another trusted company, so that you’ll share personal or financial information. Or they might claim to offer free downloads, software updates, or plug-ins to try to trick you into installing unwanted software.

Use these tips to help manage pop-ups and other unwanted interruptions.

Avoid interacting with pop-ups

Unless you’re confident that they are a legitimate ad, avoid interacting with pop-ups or webpages that seem to take over your screen.

If you see an annoying pop-up ad in Safari, you can go to the Search field and enter a new URL or search term to browse to a new site. If you don’t see the Search field on your iPhone or iPad, tap the top of the screen to make it appear.

Some pop-ups and ads have fake buttons that resemble a close button, so use caution if you try to close a pop-up or ad. If you're not sure, avoid interacting with it and close the Safari window or tab.

On your Mac, you can quit Safari, then press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari. This prevents Safari from automatically reopening any windows or tabs that were open.

Update your software

Always install the latest software updates for all of your Apple products. Many software releases have important security updates and may include improvements that help control pop-ups.

The safest way to download apps for your Mac is from the App Store. If you need software that isn’t available from the App Store, get it directly from the developer or another reliable source, rather than through an ad or link.

Check Safari settings

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Safari.

Turn on Block Pop-ups.

Turn on Fraudulent Website Warning.

On your Mac, open Safari and choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences) from the menu bar.

In the Websites tab , you can configure options to allow or block some or all pop-ups .

In the Security tab , turn on the setting to warn when visiting a fraudulent website.

If adware or other unwanted software is installed on Mac

If you see pop-ups on your Mac that just won’t go away, you might have unintentionally downloaded and installed adware (advertising-supported software) or other unwanted software. Certain third-party download sites might include software that you don’t want along with the software that you do.

If you think that you might have malware or adware on your Mac:

Update to the latest version of macOS. If your Mac is already using the latest version, restart your Mac. macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when restarting.

Check your Applications folder to see if you have any apps that you don't expect. You can uninstall those apps .

Check the Extensions tab in Safari settings to see if you installed any unnecessary extensions. You can turn extensions off .

If you continue to see advertising or other unwanted programs on your Mac, contact Apple.

  • Suggested ad blockers: 1Blocker, Crystal Adblock, Norton Ad Blocker, Purify.
  • Natively block Safari pop-ups on iPhone: Settings > Safari > Block Pop-ups ( on ).

This article explains how to use content blockers to block ads in Safari on iPhones with iOS 9 or higher.

Your phone must have iOS 9 or higher to use content blockers. Update the iPhone OS to ensure it has the most up-to-date version with current security patches.

How to Block Ads on iPhone With Safari

Using an ad blocker for your iPhone means your browser won't download ads. This usually means faster page loads, a longer-lasting battery, and less wireless data usage. If you don't want to see pop-up ads, there is a way to block these ads. Here's how to do so using the Safari web browser for iPhone.

Content blockers are apps that add new features that your default web browser doesn't have. These are like third-party keyboards —separate apps that work inside other apps that support them. This means that to block ads, you need to install at least one of these apps.

Most iPhone content blockers work the same way. When you go to a website, the app checks a list of ad services and servers. If it finds these on the site you're visiting, the app blocks the website from loading those ads on the page. Some apps take a comprehensive approach by blocking the ads and tracking the cookies used by advertisers based on those cookies' URLs .

How to Install Content Blocking Apps

To block ads with Safari content blocker apps, install the app, and then enable it from the iPhone Settings app.

Go to the App Store and download a content-blocking app to your iPhone. The example here is Norton Ad Blocker, but all ad-blocking apps work similarly. See the list below for other suggested apps.

Open the ad blocker app and follow the instructions to set it up. Every app is different, but each offers instructions to turn on the ad-blocking abilities.

On the iPhone home screen, open the Settings app.

Select Safari > Content Blockers .

Move the toggle switch next to the ad-blocker app you installed to On (green).

Choose an Ad-Blocking Plug-In for Safari

There is a sizable market for ad-blocking Safari plug-ins. The following options can get you started:

  • 1Blocker : Free, with in-app purchases. In addition to more than 50,000 built-in blocker rules, this app supports custom rules to block sites and cookies and to hide other elements.
  • Crystal Adblock : At $0.99, the developer claims that this ad blocker loads pages four times faster and uses 50 percent less data. This app also lets you opt to view ads on some sites to support those sites.
  • Norton Ad Blocker : This free ad-blocking app from the company behind the popular and long-running antivirus software also lets you add exceptions.
  • Purify : Grab this content blocker for $1.99 to block ads and tracking software. It includes a list (typically called a whitelist) to allow you to see ads on some sites if you like. According to the developer, after blocking Safari ads with this app, you can expect a fourfold increase in page load speeds and your web browsing data usage to be cut in half.

How to Block Pop-Ups on the iPhone Using Built-In Tools

Ad-blocking apps can block all kinds of ads and trackers used by advertisers. If you only want to block intrusive pop-ups, you don't need to download an app because pop-up blocking is a built-in feature in Safari. Here's what you need to do:

On the iPhone home screen, select Settings > Safari .

Toggle the Block Pop-ups switch to On (green), if it isn't already.

You can enable the Safari pop-up blocker on your computer, too.

The main benefit of blocking ads is that you don't see advertising. However, there are other key benefits to using these anti-advertisement apps:

  • Websites load faster : Ads are extra elements on the page that have to load, and ads often stream video or play animations. It takes time for the page to fully download and often causes other things like non-ad images and videos to take longer to display.
  • You'll be more secure : Many ads are vectors for malware. Infected ads hit a network, even a legitimate one, to disrupt your device.
  • You use less data : When you no longer see ads, you won't use your monthly data allowances to load ads. Some ad-blocking apps claim to save you lots of data. While their numbers may be inflated, you'll reduce your data usage to some degree because ad images and videos don't download to your phone.
  • A longer-lasting battery : Downloading ads, just like downloading anything in Safari, requires energy. One way to have a longer-lasting battery is to stop downloading so much data, which is what happens when you use an ad blocker.

Why You Shouldn't Block Ads

One downside you might encounter when you block ads on your iPhone is that some websites don't load properly. Some sites detect whether their ads load, and if ads don't load, you can't use the site until you unblock their ads.

Almost every site on the internet makes the majority of its money by showing advertising to its readers. If the ads are blocked, the site doesn't get paid. The money made from advertising pays writers and editors, funds server and bandwidth costs, buys equipment, pays for photography and travel, and more. Without that income, it's possible that a site you visit every day could go out of business. Consider supporting your favorite sites by whitelisting them, so ads on those sites still display.

How to Disable AdBlock on Major Web Browsers

Avatar photo

AdBlock is a popular content filtering extension for major web browsers like Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Microsoft Edge.

We also reviewed this extension in our best ad blocker roundup. As the name suggests, its main function is to block unwanted and annoying advertisements from being displayed when you surf the Internet.

However, installing AdBlock prevents you from accessing websites whose revenue are driven by display ads. For example, I wanted to visit CNN but ran into this warning instead.

how to disable ad blocker safari

I can easily whitelist those sites, but it’s going to be very time-consuming because I don’t know which sites are like CNN and which are not. Also, I want to ensure I never run into this problem again. So today, I am going to show you how to disable or remove AdBlock in commonly used browsers, step by step.

This guide is best for those of you who want to temporarily disable Adblock because you need access to a certain website, but you plan to enable it later on in order not to get spammed by those annoying advertisements.

I do not have ad block on chrome. The site still wants me to disable what isn’t there. So what do I do?

I have been watching SBS on Demand without any problems, but today I get a message saying that there is a problem, and I should remove or disable an adblocker. I have never installed one of these. I can still access SBS on Demand on my TV. What can I do?

Kirk Brotemarkle

I have removed all of my ad blocker programs, but still get the warning msg on Firefox and Chrome. I am beginning to believe that there is something in the registry left over which is triggering the warning! But What? I have tried uninstalling the browsers and re-installing them with no luck. Is there a common file in the blocker programs which might make the browsers think I still have an ad block program installed?

P.S. The ads that are blocked are inside text of news articles. I have plenty of ads, but I’ve become totally blind to them. So why does the film company insist that I turn off my ad blocker.

You tell me how to turn off adblocker, but I have no adblocker once I get to where you send me nor anything that appears a possible blocker.

I have the misfortune to be on Chrome 10. I know that some ads are blocked, but I have no idea of what blocks them. I’ve been on this all evening when I’d hoped to see 2 films, but they won’t show with the mysterious adblocker blocking.

It would have been better in any case for your clear description to show how to whiteline than to shut down the whole thing.

So what’s the next idea?

Karen Becconsall

I dont have ad blocker i have standard protection,I have allowed pop ups and adds on sbs on demand,I have disabled personalize adds on google,I have tried the edge browser and followed directions on tracking, have allowed cookies , and updated the browser and NOTHING IS WORKING to get videos to play on sbs.Any advice?

Christine Davis

I can play videos from SBS On Demand on my mobile phone and tablet, but not on my laptop. I do not have an Adblocker installed, so are there any instructions for allowing SBS On Demand in this circumstance?

Penélope

I don’t have the Ad Blocker, and yet it gives this problem! ????????????????

Faye

for those who does not have the adblock, you can disable it this way: beside the url is a padlock icon (eg. (lock) google.com). click that icon and go to SITE SETTINGS. in the SETTINGS, scroll down the page until you see the ADS option and then select the drop down arrow across it and select ALLOW. the ads will now be allowed on the site you needed. note: i am a google chrome user. i don’t know if this is applicable for other browsers.

doug

I don’t believe you can remove ad blocker from Edge. Don’t know where you get your “info” you are sharing with everyone, but you need to make something else up.

this does not work for a chromebook

I have been through your recommendation for Chrome, but cannot find ad blocker anywhere

How to adblock Safari and Chrome on a Mac

David Price

Annoyed by online adverts and want to get rid of them? You’ve come to the right place. In this article we explain how to easily block adverts, popups, trackers and more on your Mac, using a variety of free and paid-for tools in the Safari and Chrome web browsers.

We have a separate guide if you specifically wish to block autoplay videos on Mac . And another for those who wish to block ads on iPhone or iPad .

Before we proceed, please bear in mind that the site whose adverts you’re blocking probably relies on revenue from advertising. That may not worry you, and we know that some of the online advertising out there really does cross a line in terms of intrusiveness. Just don’t complain if a site you love suddenly closes, or starts to charge visitors, because people refused to view its adverts.

Adblock in Safari

We’ll start with how to block adverts using Apple’s web browser, Safari. IN this article we have details of some third-party ad blockers that work with Safari but you don’t actually have to install a third party ad blocker to not see adverts in Safari – you can just set up Safari to block ads for you, here’s how:

Block ads in Safari using Reader mode

Strictly speaking, if you want to block adverts in Safari on the Mac you’ll need to install third-party ad-blocking software – and we’ll talk about that in a moment. But a far simpler approach is to use Safari’s built-in Reader mode, which is practically as good.

Reader isn’t quite an ad blocker, because it blocks a bunch of other visual distractions too: sidebars, mastheads, comments, social elements, videos. (It’s the same principle as the ‘Read later’ services we discuss at the end of this article.) You just get the text and the pictures, which can be a far calmer experience than some of the more visually ‘busy’ sites.

As a general rule, you can activate Reader mode at any time, although it’s not really possible on Home pages of sites that feature multiple stories and links.

There are a few different ways to enable the Reader mode. Here’s how to enable Reader mode in Safari:

  • Go to the menu bar at the top of the screen and select View > Show Reader
  • Hit Shift-Command-R.
  • Click the Reader button (the one with three and a half horizontal lines) next to the URL bar.

How to block ads on Mac: Reader

This will then strip the page down to its bare bones, leaving only the content behind.

How to block ads on Mac: Reader mode

From Safari 11 onwards it’s been possible to be more sophisticated and tell the browser to always open article pages from particular domains in Reader mode – or even to use Reader by default all the time.

Here’s how to set reader mode up for certain websites:

When you’re on a site you want to give this treatment, go to Safari > Settings for This Website (or you can right-click the URL box and choose Settings for This Website).

How to block ads on Mac: Use Reader when available

You can also remove domains from, and add them to, the Reader list in Safari’s Preferences page. Click on Safari > Preferences.

Click on the Websites pane.

Select Reader in the left-hand column.

You’ll see a list of all the websites currently open and any you have configured to use Reader. Select the website you want to default to Reader mode and click the menu to the right of it and select On (or Off if you don’t want it to use Reader mode).

How to use Reader mode all the time on Safari

You can actually set Reader mode to be the default option on any website that supports it! Here’s how:

  • As above go to Safari > Preferences and choose Reader.
  • At the bottom of this page you’ll see the option: ‘When visiting other websites’. Set this to On and Reader will be activated by default on all compatible web pages.

Note that if you have a website that is already defaulting to Off then you won’t see it in Reader mode.

How to block popup adverts in Safari

If popup ads are driving you mad then you can quickly put a stop to them. Since Safari 11 it’s been possible to block pop-up windows via Safari Preferences.

In Safari 12 and 13 here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to Preferences.
  • Select the Websites tab.
  • Click on the Pop-up Windows option in the left-hand column.
  • Now you can either make a rule for the website you’re currently visiting by clicking on the drop down menu to the right of its name, or go to the bottom of the window and click on the drop-down menu next to ‘When visiting other websites’.
  • Then select either Block and Notify, Block, or Allow.

How to block ads on Mac: Block popups in Safari

Best ad blocker for Safari

Reader mode is a great solution, but if you want to block the adverts but leave the rest of the visual elements intact, you need to install a third-party ad blocker. There are lots of them out there, plenty of which are free, but tread carefully.

Our top recommendation is be the donation-ware Safari extension AdBlock, which deals with graphical ads, text ads and even ads in YouTube videos.

AdBlock also lets you whitelist pages on sites whose adverts you do want to see, to support them or because the ads may be useful. To whitelist the whole site you’ll need to upgrade to the AdBlock Gold level that costs £4.99/$4.99.

You can download AdBlock here .

If you’re looking for something a little more advanced, we recommend AdGuard . It comes in two forms: a free-to-use Safari extension and a £29/$30 app with a 14-day free trial. While the Safari extension is decent and acts in a similar way to AdBlock, the desktop app provides advanced features across macOS, not dependent on a particular browser.

As well as blocking ads and pop-ups from websites, you’re able to block tracking from most online sources and even be warned of malicious websites that you might stumble across online. It provides granular control over your ad blocking settings, allowing you to whitelist sites and self-promoting ads, and is incredibly simple to use.

You can download AdGuard here .

Best ad tracker blockers

Another pest online: trackers that follow your movements around the web to serve up ads. This is why you’ll be looking at a product on one site, then an ad for it magically appears when you visit another site.

To stop this intrusive (and frankly creepy) behaviour follow these steps:

Open up Safari and go to Preferences > Privacy and enable the ‘Prevent cross-site tracking’ option.

Block ads in Chrome on the Mac

Google’s Chrome browser is a popular alternative for Mac users, and even though Google is a full paid-up member of the advertising fan club, it allows plenty of scope for ad-blocking.

How to block Popups in Chrome

Let’s start by disabling popups, something which can be done from Chrome’s own settings – no need to install any extensions.

  • In Chrome select Chrome > Preferences.
  • Scroll down and click Advanced.
  • Below the heading ‘Privacy and security’, click the option Content settings.

How to block ads on Mac: Block popups in Chrome

Best Chrome ad blockers on the Mac

As with Safari, Chrome won’t actually block adverts for you – and there isn’t an easily accessed equivalent of Reader mode. (Google has publicly discussed something similar called Distill Mode, but there’s no straightforward way for Mac users to turn this on without recourse to extensions.)

Many well known ad blockers are browser-agnostic, fortunately. The two suggested above – AdBlock and AdGuard – are both able to deal with adverts in Chrome.

‘Read later’ services

If you decide you don’t want to install an ad blocker, an alternative solution is to use a read-later service. These are simple systems that let you easily save an article in a form that strips out the adverts; you can then read if later (or right away, for that matter) without being troubled by all the visual tomfoolery.

Our favourite such service is Pocket . Sign up to the service and you’ll be able to create a ‘Read later’ button as a bookmark in Safari, Chrome or whichever other browser you like.

Open an article, click the button and it’ll save to your account. You can then read the ad-free version online (from any machine) or, best of all in our experience, offline using the iPhone app .

Rumor: iOS 18 to add new ‘Web Eraser’ and page summarization features to Safari

Avatar for Chance Miller

Apple is reportedly planning big updates to Safari as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15 later this year. According to a report on Tuesday, the changes will include a new AI-powered tool called “Intelligent Search” with page summarization, a “Web Eraser” feature, and more.

iOS 18: New Safari features

The report, which comes from Marko Zivkovic at Apple Insider , cautions that “exact implementation” of these features “remains fuzzy.” We’d treat these claims with skepticism for the time being.

According to Zivkovic, Apple is planning a redesigned controls menu for Safari’s address bar that “consolidates old and new page control tools” in a central location. One of the new tools is reportedly something called “Intelligent Search.”

This feature, which is not enabled by default in test builds of Safari 18, can be activated from the new menu in the address bar. From there, the tool will “identify topics and key phrases within a webpage” and generate a summary of the page. The report speculates that Apple is “striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year,” but again, the specific details are “fuzzy.”

Arc from The Browser Company  also combines a variety of AI features with web browsing, including page summarization options.

Safari 18 in iOS 18 and macOS 15 will also reportedly include something called “Web Eraser.” This feature is “designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages,” according to Zivkovic.

Using the Web Eraser feature, users could choose to remove certain elements from a webpage like ads, images, and more. It’s a functionality already offered by certain third-party ad blockers, but Apple is apparently working on its own first-party implementation for iOS 18 and macOS 15.

Notably, any changes you make to a webpage would apply each time you visited that page. “This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed,” Zivkovic says.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

Apple implementing what is essentially a built-in ad blocker to Safari could be disastrous for ad-supported online publications like the one you’re reading right now.

3 Tips to Personalize Your AdBlock Experience

AdBlock

AdBlock’s Blog

You can browse the web the way you want to when you explore your filter list settings, use our manual hiding tool, and support your favorite content creators. Plus, block even more annoyances, like cookie banners, with AdBlock Premium .

Get AdBlock Premium and personalize the web.

Tip #1: Choose what you want to block

AdBlock works its magic thanks to filter lists. Filter lists are the rules the AdBlock extension follows to show and hide different parts of web pages as you browse, including ads. Think of a filter list like a coffee filter. Coffee grounds stay behind as the filter allows delicious coffee to flow into the coffee pot, just like ads are blocked while your content isn’t.

With filter lists, you can customize what it is you want to block when browsing the web. We recommend that users check out the filter lists that AdBlock enables by default. You can disable any of the filter lists that AdBlock enables by default. Of course, be careful when choosing what to disable. For instance, the EasyList filter list is the primary list of ad-blocking filters that most ad blockers use. If you disable EasyList, AdBlock won’t be able to block most ads.

We also suggest users take a look at the EasyPrivacy list to block trackers. Ad trackers can be invasive as advertisers use them to collect information about you. This includes things like your age, location, hobbies and interests, browsing history, and purchase history. This information is then used to show you personalized ads with the hope that you’ll be more likely to make a purchase.

With the EasyPrivacy filter list, you can prevent ads from tracking your online activities by blocking the trackers advertisers use to know what sites you visit. If you’d like to learn more about subscribing to this filter list, you can find the instructions here . (Please note that using this filter list may cause issues on sites that rely on third-party trackers, like many banking sites do. You can typically work around that by adding sites to your allowlist , though this will unblock ads on those sites, too.)

Tip #2: Customize web pages

What if you want to block something on a web page, but it’s not an ad? That’s where the manual hiding tool comes in. With this tool, you can hide whatever parts of a page you no longer want to see. For instance, maybe you’re not interested in “Who to follow” on X (formerly Twitter). Or perhaps the recommended stories on a news site are distracting for you. AdBlock’s manual hiding tool is just the thing to hide what you don’t want to see. All you need are these instructions for how to use the tool .

Tip #3: Choose who you want to support

At AdBlock, we believe that a healthy internet is one that is balanced between users, content creators, and advertisers. We know that many content creators rely on ad revenue to keep making content. That’s why we give you the ability to support the content creators you love if you want. It’s as easy as adding a website or YouTube channel to your allowlist ! Adding a creator to your allowlist means that you allow ads to show on that site, ensuring the creator gets their ad revenue. Of course, AdBlock continues to block ads everywhere else and you can always remove a site from your list whenever you want.

Bonus tip #4: Use AdBlock Premium

There are even more ways to experience the web the way you want to when you sign up for AdBlock Premium . With Premium, you can:

  • Hide annoying cookie banners. You know those pop-ups that ask you to accept or reject cookies on websites? Get where you’re going faster when you block cookie banners while automatically rejecting the unnecessary cookies that you can.
  • Block additional pop-ups. Unfortunately, the web is full of pop-ups, some of which aren’t even ads! You can focus on what’s important when you block floating videos that follow you around, newsletter requests, survey requests, and more.
  • Swap ads for images you love. Prefer to see pictures of puppies, nature, or even your own photos? You can make it so that AdBlock shows you these images instead of ads as you browse.
  • Choose your theme. Interact with the AdBlock menu in whatever color theme you prefer!

Personalize your internet experience when you choose what you want to block, customize web pages, and support the content creators you love. And of course, if you’re looking for an even better, more customized web, give AdBlock Premium a try.

Here’s to you having more control over your internet experience!

Apple to reportedly use AI for ad-free browsing and page summaries on iPhone and Mac

  • Apple is gearing up to introduce AI features in Safari on iPhone and Mac to enhance the web browsing experience significantly.
  • An AI tool called "Web Eraser" is in the works for the Safari browser, allowing users to remove specific portions of web pages without third-party extensions.
  • "Intelligent Search" is another major feature that is reportedly coming soon to Safari to generate summaries by identifying key phrases on web pages.

A few months ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that AI will come to Apple devices "later this year", but there are no words on how it plans to roll out AI on iPhone and Mac devices. While Apple is still tight-lipped about its AI plans, a new leak has surfaced highlighting some of the ways the company will introduce AI to its devices: big plans for Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 .

Apple might be going all out with AI integration in Safari

According to a report from Apple Insider , Apple is working on two new AI features for Safari 18 in iOS 18 and macOS 15 to improve the web-browsing experience significantly on iPhone and Mac devices . The Cupertino tech firm is working on something called "Web Eraser", an AI-driven tool to help you remove specific portions of a web page, including advertisements and images. It's more likely to be integrated into the browser and less likely to be a browser extension, so when available, you should be able to block ads from the web browser without downloading a third-party web extension.

While time will tell whether it can fully replace a third-party ad blocker, the report suggests Safari will remember the changes you apply using the "Web Eraser" tool. Put simply, if you remove certain portions of a web page and then close the tab or window, the page will appear with those portions removed the next time you open it. If you don't like it that way, you'll be able to get back to the original state of those web pages.

The other currently-being-worked-on capability is called "Intelligent Search", and one of its functionalties will be that it'll "identify topics and key phrases within the web pages" to generate summaries. Again, web summarization is already widely available, and you can use it for free using Copilot in Microsoft Edge and Windows 11 .

How to use Microsoft Copilot

When will you see an ai-fied safari browser on your mac and iphone.

Apple has a couple of events lined up in the next couple of months, including WWDC on June 10, where the company is expected to announce several new AI features in iOS 18 and macOS 15. We'll likely see all those AI capabilities in action in Safari on that day.

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

Apple Web browsers Mobile software Rumors

Apple's getting ready to overuse the AI buzzword just like everyone else has been doing for a while, and the big AI push is also coming this year to Safari, the company's web browser, according to a new report.

The next version of Safari will be AI-infused, and it's expected to launch alongside iOS 18 , which means it will most likely be presented at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June .

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

Safari will get Intelligent Search, which will leverage on-device AI to identify topics and key phrases within a web page you're looking at in order to summarize its contents for you. Apple's large language model (LLM) will identify sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text on the page, and words which are repeated and key sentences will be recognized as topics.

This is said to come in response to (what else?) ChatGPT but of course Apple will deliver its usual twist in that the experience, being on-device, will be much more secure.

Web Eraser will let you remove specific portions of web pages - things like banner ads, images, text, or even entire page sections, with "relative ease". The erasure will be persistent across sessions too, as Safari will remember the changes even after you close the original tab or window.

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

When you visit the same page again you'll be informed that the page has been modified to reflect your desired changes, and you'll then get an option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its unalerted state if you want.

This sounds a lot like an overcomplicated way to create an ad blocker and use the AI buzzword for that, but ad blockers also do exist, and have predated all these AI shenanigans, so we're not sure what to make of this.

The new Safari will also come with an updated UI, with a new page controls menu giving you easy access to a lot of options that were previously scattered across the UI. Aside from the aforementioned Intelligent Search / Intelligent Browsing and Erase Web Content, this will house other stuff like zoom options, privacy controls, content blocking options, in-page text search, reader mode, and extension shortcuts.

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

Next year, Apple will integrate a "much more powerful visual search feature" into its browser that will let you "obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images". This is apparently similar to the Visual Lookup feature which lets Siri identify plants, pets, and landmarks in photos.

Apple's Safari browser will get an AI makeover this year

While all of these things are purportedly already in development, keep in mind that it's not impossible for Apple to delay their launch or cancel some altogether - things that have all happened before.
