2. Paraiso ni Juan Beach (Narvacan, Ilocos Sur)

Famous for the varying rock formations that one can climb while swimming there. Its sand isn’t fine grain, instead they’re like tiny bits and pieces of really small pebbles. 

The waters are calm, most times, clear and beyond the rock formations are clear blue waters. One thing that stands our here is the beautiful view of a shrine on top a giant rock boulder that can be seen from the shore and the main road. 

This shrine cannot be accessed during high tide since the waves are strong. But when the waves are calm and it is low tide, one can access it, moving through the rocks and passing the waters, then up the stairs, sits a life-sized antique monument of Our Mother Mary overlooking the mainland.

3.  Pug-os Beach (Cabugao, Ilocos Sur )

What are the fascinating tourist spots in Ilocos Sur for the curious traveler aside from the world-famous Vigan City? Included are both popular and off-beaten places to visit and include in your itinerary.

I just resigned from a job after some months of exhausting and hectic engagements. That was my first job in the sprawling Manila metropolis and I never thought it could be that stress-filled for someone like me who got used to living a simple life in the mountains.

I badly needed a break and travel was my ultimate respite. Instead of going back home, I chose to explore the eco-cultural wonders of Ilocos Sur, one of the provinces of Region I.

If you’re also planning for an immersion there, here are the must-see tourist spots to see. Take note. Most of these are off-beaten, thus, suited for those who don’t like touristy destinations. Let’s go!

Behold Ilocos Sur Tourist Spot s

1. aw-asen falls.

Aw-asen falls is one of the newly discovered tourist spots in Ilocos Sur, located on one of its remotest barangays namely, Santo Rosario in Sigay. Expect humps and bumps along the road to the barangay as it has not been fully paved.

The challenge does not end there. From the barangay’s nearest drop-off point, you ‘ll have to hike steep terrains and cross rivers before finally catching sight of majestic Aw-asen falls.

Aw-asen falls measures more than 142 feet (43 meters). It carved a wide and very deep pool. It’s crystal-clear and cold waters provide an instant relief after the arduous hike of getting here.

2. Bantay Bell Tower

One of the iconic tourist destinations in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, Bantay Bell Tower, stands on a hill overlooking Vigan City and the towns of Bantay.

Locals say that it was a favorite dating site of Diego and Gabriela Silang, both are local heroes who led revolts against the Spanish regime.

It is just 10-15 minutes of ride from Vigan. It is also adjacent to the St. Augustine Parish Church, known for its baroque-gothic architecture.

3. Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls

Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls is an Iloco term, which means “Falls of Happiness.” Though it is one of the remotest tourist spots in Ilocos Sur, it is also one of the most picturesque.

It’s best to come here during the rainy season as the falls is in its full force. Patches of rainforests surround the falls, giving it a rustic view.

5. Baluarte Resort and Mini-Zoo

If you’re looking to see exotic animals, check out Baluarte Zoo, a hundred-hectare zoological park, and resort complex. Here, you can find leopards, Bengal tigers, white lions, camels, zebras, and ostriches. You’ll feel like you are in Africa here.

Jars from Vigan City has been gaining popularity in recent years. In the Iloco language, these are called burnay. They are made by hand from a grade-A clay which is abundant in the area.

The industry dates back to pre-colonial times and the burnay has been used for drinking tea and as a container for local ingredients.

10. Vitalis Villas

Dubbed as the “Santorini of the North,” Vitalis Villas is the Philippines’ version of the famed Santorini in Greece, featuring cubiform villas painted in a wash of white and blue. It’s one of the most elegant accommodations in Ilocos Sur, overlooking the beautiful sea.

11. Ken Ngilawen Burial Cave

When we speak of burial caves, the first thing that would come to mind is Sagada in Mt. Province. But you can also find them on a mountainous part of Ilocos Sur.

The Ken Ngilawen Burial Cave is a huge boulder with a wide crevice underneath where the log coffins are piled. Some coffins feature sculptures of a head resembling a serpent, cow, or lizard.

12. Baey Anito Falls

One of the least known tourist spots in Ilocos Sur, Baey Anito Falls is a sheer beauty to behold. “Baey Anito” is a Kankanaey term that translates into “House of spirits/gods.”

Locals say that the falls is a dwelling place of stories, thus, they named the falls as such. But no worries, that’s just a myth.

13. Pikkang Falls

The river leading to the falls also thrives with shrimps and small fishes. It is a new tourist spot in Ilocos Sur.

17. Mira Hills Park

18. Govantes River

Locals claim Govantes River as the “face” of Vigan City because it’s the first river you’ll see before entering Vigan City proper. The local officials have been eyeing to turn it into a boating park.

19. Padre Burgos House

It’s the home of Padre Jose Burgos, one of the Filipino priests shot during the Spanish times for allegedly leading a revolt. The house, therefore, signify the heroism of the Ilocanos.

20. Syquia Mansion Museum

The mansion is said to represent the wealth of some locals in the past. These locals were active players during the Galleon Trade. Inside, you’ll find ancient furniture, relics, and paintings.

Surprisingly, one of the relics was a gift of a Chinese emperor during the Ming Dynasty. During the presidency of Elpidio Quirino, the mansion served as the Malacañang of the North.

Because of that, the museum is one of the historical places to go to in Ilocos Sur.

There are two (2) major attractions here in the museum complex which are both prominent figures in our country’s national history. And they are both proud Ilokanos! First, is the Burgos Museum which holds the collection of Padre Jose Burgos’ life memorabilia, one of the 3 martyrs GomBurZa priests. Burgos Museum is actually the ancestral house of Padre Burgos so everything you’ll see around the museum were personal belongings and artifacts by the martyr priest himself.

The other one pays tribute to the 6th President of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino. What was once the Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail turned into a special exhibit featuring some of President Quirino’s important memorabilia and historical items. Probably one of the highlights of this museum is the spectacular replica of President Quirino’s room featuring some of the actual clothes he wore during his time as president. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting wandering around the Ilocos Museum Regional Complex especially if you’re a certified history buff!

5. Chapel by The Ruins

Ah, there’s really something special about old and vintage buildings that makes us fall in love, right? Well, prepare to fall in love once you reach our next destination, Chapel by The Ruins! This serene and solemn place is actually located beside the Saint Augustine Parish Church, the same church where the famous Bantay Church Bell Tower is stationed.

It’s a really small outdoor chapel featuring stone benches and altars where you can quietly meditate and offer your prayers. Tourists visiting the church are usually invited to spend some time at the Chapel by The Ruins, especially after holy masses.

6. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

Diving deeper into the rich culture and traditions of Ilocos, you’ll discover the beautiful practice of making Pagburnayan or Burnay Jars. Originating in the small village of Pagburnayan in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, local potters utilized a hundred-year-old process of making durable clay jars.

This important landmark pays tribute yet again to Padre Jose Burgos, one of the three Filipino priest martyrs, the GomBurZa. If you want to dive even deeper into the rich and colorful history of Ilocos Sur, then visiting the famous Arce Mansion in Vigan City would be the best choice! Arce Mansion will give you an all-in experience of living during the vintage times of the Spanish and American Colonial periods. The mansion features authentic items and memorabilia from the periods and they also have excellent staff offering to give you a full-course service of traditional Filipino and Ilokano cuisine.

The catch? You have to choose a costume to wear during the whole experience! You can choose to dress like an Ilustrado, Prayle, Gobernadorcillo, or even a simple Indio. Classy, right? Make sure to take awesome pictures as a remembrance of your visit!

Inside the Syquia Mansion, you’ll find breathtaking collections and exhibits of significant family heirlooms and artifacts of powerful Ilokano families, specifically the Ang Co family.

If you’re an outdoor lover, I’m sure that you’ll have the best time engaging with rappelling activities, kayaking, zipline, and even Zorb Balls. There are also other watersports activities held on Abra River for extreme junkies out there! Oh, and aside from enjoying these extreme activities, visitors can also admire the architectural beauty of the Old Quirino Bridge and take awesome pictures while they’re at it.

12. Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo

Up next, who wouldn’t want to meet exotic wild animals up close and even have the chance of safely interacting with them? Ah, that’s exactly what we’ll do when we visit the Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo of Vigan City! This huge zoological park covering an enormous area of 100 hectares is owned by Chavit Singson, one of the biggest names in Philippine politics and the business industry. Baluarte is often dubbed as the “Home of the Big Cats in Vigan” because one of the highlights of the zoo is the majestic Bengal Tigers and many more animals such as sea lions, iguanas, pythons, and other species of birds and reptiles.

As years go by, Baluarte Zoo keeps on expanding and developing more attractions while taking care of these wild animals. As Filipinos know all too well—and hope many other travelers will soon discover—the Philippines is a country that features some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But if you’re looking for an underrated destination where the crowds are far fewer, then journey to the northernmost region of Ilocos in Luzon.

Lounge on sandy beaches full of character. Listen to the crashing waves of crystal-blue waters. Feel the West Philippine Sea wind on your face as you stroll. In Ilocos, you can explore a variety of beach experiences.

Below is our handpicked list of breathtaking beaches in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur provinces. Make sure to make a beeline to these places when you head way up north.

Ilocos Norte beaches

The shores of Ilocos Norte are extreme, so much that you can find black sand, golden sand, and rock formations all in the same province. The variety of landforms will astound you, and you won’t run out of beaches to visit. Here are a few of our personal favorites.

Blue Lagoon

Pagudpud is what most travelers imagine when they think of Ilocos beaches. Local guides, however, clarify that Pagudpud is not a one-beach area. The coastal town in the far reaches of Ilocos Norte offers several beaches, each with a distinct vibe.

Tucked away between widely famous Saud Beach and the winding Patapat Viaduct is Blue Lagoon or, as Ilocanos call it, Maira-ira. The rough waters are ideal for surfing and water activities. Resorts of varying scale and price points line the waterfront, but we recommend a day at Kapuluan Vista.

When beachgoers talk about Pagudpud, they are, in fact, referring to palm tree-lined Saud Beach. Saud was recently named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by a leading travel magazine. Visitors have described the place as “the best beach for miles around” with a well-kept shoreline, stunning views, and a peaceful atmosphere. There are several low-key accommodations in this part of Pagudpud, but Casa Victoria is highly recommended.

Are you looking for a less touristy beach where you can meet locals? Visit Currimao, a favorite and well-kept secret among Ilocos residents. Unlike the far-reaching trek to Pagudpud, Currimao is conveniently situated near Paoay (home of San Agustin Church, a World Heritage Site) and Batac (where you can taste Iloco empanada ). Both Playa Tropical Resort and Sitio Remedios Heritage Village offer unique stays in this seaside town.

Ilocos Sur beaches

Vigan immediately comes to mind when dreaming of Ilocos Sur. But the province also plays host to surprising natural wonders and stretches of dreamy coastline. Here are three beaches worth exploring in Ilocos Sur.

1. Vigan Heritage Village

Vigan is among the oldest cities in the Philippines.

It is most famous for its Heritage Village and the Calle Crisologo street.

This historic centre dates back to the 16th century and it’s the best-preserved example of Spanish architecture in Asia.

Because of the unique blend of the Philippine’s and Spanish architecture, well-preserved Spanish monuments and rich cultural heritage it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The best way to enjoy the village and its cobblestone streets is riding “calesas” horse-drawn carriages or strolling among the beautiful colonial buildings.

Visit it early in the morning when numerous souvenir shops start to open, or in the evening when it gives off the 18th-century vibe.

2. Dancing Fountain at Plaza Salcedo

The Dancing Fountain is located right at the centre of the Plaza Salcedo.

There is a show starting every night at 7.30 pm.

Lasers and lights dance to music from around the world for about 30 minutes.

It is a perfect place to go and relax after a day spent strolling around.

However, expect crowds since the fountain is an ideal stop-over for the locals as well, and there is a limited place for sitting.

On the other side of the Plaza, there are sprouting fountains where kids usually play around.

3. Bantay Bell Tower

Bantay Bell Tower is the historic belfry of the St Augustine church in Bantay.

It is on a hilltop overlooking the province.

The belfry was once used as a lookout for invading enemy forces.

If you are looking for a postcard-perfect scenery, climb up the Bantay Bell Tower.

You’ll be greeted by a big old bell and breathtaking views at the top.

The belfry is guarded by a small gate which is locked when there are no visitors.

If you want to make sure you can enter, register at the Tourist Centre along Calle Crisologo at Vigan and ask for a tour in advance.

4. Baluarte Zoo

Just 10-minute drive away from Vigan City is the privately owned Baluarte Zoo.

Among caged animals, there are Bengal tigers, pythons, iguanas, camels, deer, as well as ostriches and flamingos.

Visitors can feed monkeys, swans, peacocks, and parrots.

Within the zoo, there is also a butterfly garden where you can admire thousands of butterflies and a track for horse riding.

The zoo is open every day, and the entrance is free.

Besides seeing the animals, you can also have a picnic lunch.

If you are travelling with kids, the Baluarte Zoo is something you shouldn’t miss visiting.

5. Archbishop’s Palace

The Archbishop’s Palace is next to the St Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Vigan.

It is the only remaining 18th-century palace of this kind in the Philippines.

The residence of Archbishop of Nueva Segovia is in the palace, as well as a museum.

The museum has a collection of religious artefacts and relics from other churches around the region.

Make sure to ask for permission to visit the first floor where you can see numerous painting and learn something about each of the archbishops and bishops of the area.

You can get an entry ticket at some of the offices across the building.

6. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

This jar factory is actually one of the few authentic jar makers in Vigan.

The name of this factory, Pagburnayan, refers to the hand-crafted pots.

It’s fascinating to watch how clay is transforming into pots.

The whole process will undoubtedly be interesting to kids, as well as adults.

You will also get the chance to try to make a pot yourself.

Beware, it’s not as easy at it looks.

Also, if you succeed, keep in mind that it will take a couple of days until it’s completely done.

7. Chapel by the Ruins

When you go at the back of the St Augustine Church, you’ll find a lovely garden, arranged like an open-air shrine.

It is Chapel by the Ruins, serene, peaceful and an ideal place for thinking or praying.

This garden-like chapel is what’s left of one wing of the St Augustine Church.

Locals claim that this was the place where priests were incarcerated during the 1763 revolt against Spaniards.

However, the ruins have been preserved and converted into the chapel.

8. Hidden Garden

Although this place is outside of Vigan, it is still a must-see attraction.

You can get there by car or hiring a tricycle.

There are food stalls and a cafe, surrounded by a beautiful garden.

There is a vast variety of plants, and some of them are for sale.

You can stroll around the area, buy some plants or other souvenirs.

It’s a great place to relax and get a breath of fresh air.

If you decide to eat there, keep in mind that the menu consists of local dishes.

9. Plaza Burgos

Plaza Burgos is one of the two major plazas in Vigan.

It was constructed in honour of Father Jose P Burgos.

He was executed with other clergy reformists due to his protests against inequality of Filipino priests.

Plaza Burgos is a local’s favourite hang-out place.

It’s an ideal location if you want to discover their way of life.

On its far end, you can find food stalls with local specialities including empanadas, their favourite snack.

You shouldn’t leave Vigan without trying the empanada in Plaza Burgos.

To make this gastronomic experience unforgettable, try okoy and the local ice-cream.

Around the square, you can also find various souvenir shops and buy other locally made crafts.

10. Santa Maria Church

Santa Maria Church is officially known as The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a part of the collection of four Baroque Churches in the Philippines.

In 1769, the picturesque church was built on the top of the hill overlooking the town of Santa Maria.

This massive baroque structure was not just a lookout, but a religious centre of the area as well.

It is also reminiscent of the four centuries of Spanish domination in the area.

However, unlike other churches in the region, it is surrounded by defensive walls like a fortress.

11. National Museum, Magsingal Branch

The museum was once a convent for a ruined church.

It was then upgraded to Magsingal Church before being transformed into a museum in 1982.

This is only a branch of the National Museum, and displays the material culture of the Northern Luzon.

You’ll also see a structure for drying tobacco leaves called “pugon”, and concrete wheel for making pottery jars.

It is about 10 kilometres away from Vigan.

12. St Augustine Church

St Augustine Church is commonly known as Bantay Church or the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity.

It’s a Roman Catholic church, located in Bantay.

This is one of the oldest churches in Ilocos Sur, established at the end of the 16th century.

The exterior is mesmerising, however, inside the church much simpler in design.

At the back of the altar, you can find Virgin Mary crowned by the Pope as the patroness of Ilocandia.

Pilgrims often come to pray to the Lady.

13. Syquia Mansion

The Syquia Mansion was a home of the Philippines’ sixth president Elpidio Quirino and his family.

His wife’s family owned the mansion though.

The Syquia Mansion houses the president’s extensive memorabilia, and it is worth a visit.

Some of the historical and political gatherings took place here.

Marvel at huge rooms and look through the peeping holes used to observe visitors in the receiving area, before allowing them to enter the living room.

The mansion itself is another example of a hybrid of Spanish and Philippine’s architecture.

14. St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral

St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the major religious landmarks of the Philippines.

The original structure was made in 1574, but it was just a chapel then.

In 1641 the chapel was replaced by the church, but it was finally completed in 1800.

The cathedral was built in Baroque earthquake style, with strengthened thick walls and massive structure against earthquakes.

When you enter the cathedral, you can admire its interior, the silver-panelled main altar, 12 smaller altars and brass communion rails made in China.

You can also see Chinese characters where the rails connect to the building.

The cathedral’s octagonal design is supposedly rooted in feng shui principles.

St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is close to Plaza Salcedo and Plaza Burgos.

15. Crisologo Museum

The Crisologo Museum is small but houses a lot of memorabilia, and antiques.

If you want to understand the political atmosphere in the Philippines in the ’70s, then this museum is a must.

Floro Crisologo was the congressman who was killed by an unidentified gunman inside the St Paul Cathedral.

To honour him, his family converted their century-old family mansion into a museum.

It gives you the opportunity to peek into the past.

You can see the antique carriage and an old car that are still being used as a movie prop.

Floro Crisologo’s wife survived an assassination attempt in them while being pregnant.

There is also a book collection, news clippings about Crisologo’s death, and even the clothes he wore when he was assassinated, covered in blood.

16. Padre Burgos House – National Museum

Padre Burgos House is a satellite of the National Museum, and one of the important historic buildings in Vigan.

As a young priest, Father or Padre Burgos fought for the equal rights for Philippine’s clergy.

However, he was executed by the Spanish in 1872 with two other martyr priests.

Father Burgos house is actually the old two-story house where he was born.

It is close to the St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral, and it houses an extensive collection of his memorabilia, including photographs, old books and family antiques.

You can also enjoy the series of 14 paintings by Esteban Villanueva of the 1807 Basi Revolt.

Ilocos Sur is a region full of exciting attractions.

Ilocos Sur is not your typical destination for suns and beaches. Visiting will take you back to its 18th-century vibe with its preserved Spanish architecture.

Its capital, Vigan City, holds a UNESCO heritage site recognition. Other than its historical traces, it is also a gastronomic destination thanks to its famous products like the  empanada  and Ilocos  longganisa.

While it is generally hot throughout the year, the best time to travel is March to May. During those months, the temperature ranges from the highs of 33 degrees C to lows of 25 degrees C.

Book your tour in advance to avail of lower rates. April is the busiest month for tourism. However, avail of cheaper accommodations when you consider traveling to less crowded months of March and November.

Traveling from Manila to Vigan, Ilocos Sur

From 6-7 hours of land travel, you will arrive at Ilocos Sur. If you are traveling in your car or a rental one, you will likely come earlier than commuting through public buses.

The fastest way, however, is thru a flight from Manila to Laoag in Ilocos Norte. After that, you will ride a bus with routes going to Vigan City.

1. Calle Crisologo

The most famous Vigan tourist spot is the Calle Crisologo. This street sits in the heart of the Heritage Village recognized by UNESCO.

The grid street pattern of Calle Crisologo showcases century-old houses that line along the pavements made from cobblestones. Kalesa (horse-drawn carriage), however, is the only vehicle permitted to traverse the street.

Spend an early walk while the shops are starting to open so you can enjoy taking pictures without the crowd. The lower floor of these ancient houses is usually souvenir shops or restaurants.

Visiting in the afternoon, on the other hand, gives you an ambiance of the 18th-century vibe. Visitors dine at alfresco or enjoy some drinks to cap off the night.

Shopping for souvenirs and indulging in Ilocano foods are among the things to enjoy on your trip to Ilocos Sur. For extra fun, ride a kalesa while touring Calle Crisologo and other places within the Heritage Village.

2. Plaza Salcedo

The Plaza Salcedo is a nearby Vigan tourist spot not to miss when touring the downtown area. The place is a spacious open park for picture taking during the day and enjoying a free dancing fountain at night.

The statue is a reminder of Father Jose P. Burgos’ martyrdom during the Spanish colonial.

6. Padre Burgos House

Locally known as  Bahay Na Bato  (stone house), this museum extends the National Museum in Ilocos Sur. This place is where the late Father Burgos grew up.

Learn from the displays and writings of how Father Burgos fought for the equality of Filipino priests. Some of the priest’s belongings, including his old writing tools, photographs, and family antiques, are among the things you can appreciate on your visit.

Aside from Father Burgos’ memorabilia, the museum also holds a series of paintings by Don Esteban Villanueva. The canvas shows an overview of the Basi Revolt against the Spanish rulers and their drastic move to quell the uprising.

7. Crisologo Museum

Another museum you should add to your Vigan tourist spot itinerary is the Crisologo Museum. A small vintage house turned into a museum in memory of the late politician Floro S. Crisologo.

An unidentified gunman has assassinated the statesman during his Sunday visit with his wife at Saint Paul Cathedral.

Have a glimpse of the past for free, and learn about the trivial political clan from Vigan. Here, you can learn about the prominent family’s contribution and influence to the province through memorabilia, scriptures, and displays.

8. Syquia Mansion

13. Ilocos Sur Adventure Zone

The main attraction is its 400-meter long zipline, which requires you to first climb a 5 level platform. You will then traverse the Abra River, which is usually calm and clear during the summer.

Parallel to the zipline is the postcard-like Quirino Bridge that connects the towns of Bantay and Santa.

The Quirino Bridge and Banaoang Bridge both span across the Abra River.

The outdoor complex sits perfectly between a mountain and the sea. They offer activities like paragliding, mountain climbing, off-road driving, and kitesurfing.

17. Santiago Cove

If you are coming from Metro Manila, you will be passing by the town of Santiago. Frequently missed by tourists, a small paradise lies on its cove.

The Sabangan Cove, or commonly referred to as Santiago Cove, has fine white sands. Unlike the Mindoro beach, the water here is calm and is perfect for a quick swim.

ILOCOS SUR TOURIST SPOTS AND THINGS TO DO IN ILOCOS SUR

The most popular place to visit in Ilocos Sur is Vigan. But there are also nice beaches in Ilocos Sur, caves and falls. We will write about all of them from historical sites to the best places to visit in the nature in Ilocos Sur.

HISTORICAL SITES IN ILOCOS SUR

1. explore plaza salcedo.

The first in the list of Ilocos Sur tourist spots is Plaza Salcedo in Vigan. The Main Plaza is Vigan is the first thing that we saw. It’s really beautiful for waking around. Next to Vigan Plaza you will find a few places to eat street food and restaurants around.

2. SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL

Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Paul is also known as Vigan Cathedral. St Paul Cathedral is Roman Catholic and it’s located closed to Crisologo Street and Plaza Burgos.

3. PLAZA SALCEDO​ FOUNTAIN SHOW

Dancing Fountain Show at Plaza Salcedo​ at 7 pm during weekdays and during the weekends there is a second show qt 8 30 pm. It;s so beautiful and is one of the Ilocos Sur tourist spots that you can’t skip.

4. VISIT SYQUIA MANSION

The Syquia Mansion is a Majestic,  19th-century stone mansion  that features grand,  opulent rooms , period furnishings & art.  The Syquia Mansion tour is free,  but a donation may be given to the caretaker.

5. VISIT FATHER JOSE BURGOS’ HOUSE

Padre Burgos House  or also called  National Museum,  is  the ancestral house and birthplace of priest patriot Fr. Jose Burgos. It is one of the  notable historic structures of Vigan , the capital of the province of Ilocos Sur.  It is a two-story structure  located near the Provincial Capitol and close to St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

6. EXPLORE CRISOLOGO STREET

Calle Crisologo dominates the  Mestizo district,  with its cobblestone streets, malecón,  horse-drawn carriages  and rustic mansions, you will surely  feel like you’ve been transferred to a different place, rather, to a different time!

Full of souvenirs and picturesque everywhere, you feel like walking around old towns in Spain. You can’t miss in the list of Ilocos Sur tourist spots. It’s also popular ride a calesa to move around these streets.

7. VISIT CRISOLOGO MUSEUM

This Museum is the house of the late former politician  Floro S. Crisologo.  It is now turned into a museum with memorabilia & furniture.  The Crisologo Museum is found along De Los Reyes Street in Vigan. 

8. VISIT BANTAY BELL TOWER

The  Saint Augustine Parish Church , commonly known as  Bantay Church , is a  Roman Catholic   church  in  Bantay, Ilocos Sur  in the  Philippines . The church was dedicated to  St. Augustine of Hippo . It is also known as the  Shrine of Our Lady of Charity.  Bantay Bell Tower is one of Vigan’s most iconic structure. Built in 1951, you can see the panoramic view of Vigan in this historical tower.

9. SANTA MARIA CHURCH

Santa Maria Church is located in Santa Maria in Ilocos Sur. The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption (Nuestra Señora de la Asunción). The church was designated as a  UNESCO World Heritage Site  on December 1993 as part of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines.

10. EXPERIENCE PAGBURNAYAN

Pagburnayan Jar Making is also a well know of the things to do in Ilocos Sur wants to experience. It is located in Brgy. Pagburnayan in Vigan. Pagburnayan is a place where they used the  old and authentic methods in pottery.

The root word “burnay” is an  earthenware jar crafted by potter’s hands  with the aid of a potter’s wheel. It uses fine sand (anay) as a tempering material and fired at a high temperature in a  huge brick-and-clay ground kiln  that make it is harder and more durable than other terra cotta.

11. ABEL WEAVING

The Abel is the traditional woven used in Vigan. The Abel cloth is strong and colorful. Abel is made from yarns of cotton or sagut from the North Luzon where they are growing of this plant.

12. TRY LOCAL FOOD

Try local food is one of our favorithe things to do in Ilocos Sur and everywhere that we visit ha! The  Vigan empanada  is much in keeping with the  Vigan  people’s love for vegetables in their cuisine. Empanadas with meat and vegetables you can find them everywhere.  For 35 PHP as street food you can taste a good ones!

Also popular meals to try in Ilocos Sur are longganisa, sinanglao a beef soup and bagnet fried crispy pork.

NATURE ILOCOS SUR TOURIST SPOTS

13. visit baluarte chavit singson.

Baluarte Chavit Singson or Baluarte Zoo is a zoological park in Vigan, Ilocos Sur Philippine s that is owned by  Chavit Singson .   Baluarte  is just ten minute drive from  Vigan  City. It features a number of live animals like ostrich, tigers, lions, ducks, camels, kangaroos, and deers among others that lives peacefully at the zoo.

There is also a  butterfly garden  and a gallery which showcases the owner’s collection from his trip to Safari.  There is no entrance fee. Operating hours is 6AM to 6PM.

14. CRUISE MESTIZO RIVER

Mestizo River is a stream and is located in Province of Ilocos Sur, Ilocos, Philippines. Mestizo River has so much importance in history in Vigan. It was used to transport goods in the old times.

BEACHES IN ILOCOS SUR

15. mindoro beach.

This beach is located in  Barangay Mindoro , located five kilometers east of the town center. The beach, which faces the  West Philippine Sea , has dark but fine sands. It’s also one of the favorite places to go to by the the tourists because like most places on the Philippines in west coast, it offers a  beautiful view of the sunset .

There are cottages where guests can chill and rest. One of the features that grabs the attention of the people visiting is the  concrete breakwaters  that looked like giant jackstones.

16. SULVEC BEACH NARVACAN

Sulvec Beach is located in Narvacan at Ilocos Sur. Sulvec Beach is one of the popular Ilocos Sur tourist spots apart from Vigan. It has rock formations with a grotto by the sea. There are a few cottages in the beach if you would love to spend the day. As you know guys sunset by the beach is always the best time to visit.

17. SABANGAN COVE

Sabangan Cove or Santiago Cove is located in Santiago at Ilocos Sur. It’s called the Boracay of Ilocos because of their white sand and blue water. It’s perfect place to spend the day swimming and snorkeling. You can even stay at  Vitalis White Sands  and  Santiago Cove Hotel and Restaurant .

18. PUG-OS BEACH IN CABUGAO

Pug-Os Beach in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur just 30 minutes driving North Vigan. A great place for relaxing and swimming to spend the day or the weekend if you prefer. It can be the most popular in the list of Ilocos Sur beaches.

19. MOUNT TIRAD

Mount Tirad is located in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur. It’s the third highest mountain in Ilocos Sur with 1154 meters. It’s an easy hike that will take you around 30 minutes from Pilar town to get the amazing views.

20. yamashita cave.

Yamashita Cave is located in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur. Yamashita Cave named is because of General Yamashita was hidden in the cave during the World War II. To reach Yamashita Cave you will have to hile around 40 minutes from Cervantes.

21. KEN NGILAWEN BURIAL CAVE

Ken Ngilawen Burial Cave in Alilem, Ilocos Sur. Ken Ngilawen Burial Cave have two log coffins with a sculpture and inscriptions. To reach the burial cave from Apaya barangay you will have to hike a few minutes.

FALLS IN ILOCOS SUR

22. pikkang falls.

Pikkang Falls is located in Barangay Malamin in San Juan, Ilocos Sur. You will have to hike 30-40 minutes crossing the river to get to Pikkang Falls. The place is beautiful and you will enjoy swimming.

23. SANGBAY NI RAGSAK FALLS AND DAWARA FALLS

Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls and Dawara Falls are located in Suyo, Ilocos Sur. Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls and Dawara Falls you can visit both at the same time. You will find only locals around and it will be amazing if you like hiking around the nature.

24. AW-ASEN FALLS

Aw-asen Falls is located in Santo Rosario in Sigay. It’s one of the most remote places in this list of Ilocos tourist spots. You will have to trek for more than an hour to reach Aw-asen falls. It will be totally worth it especially if you love adventure.

Officially known as the Saint Augustine Church , the church is known for its beautiful Spanish-era architecture. It was constructed between 1694 and 1710 by Augustinian friars and is renowned for its blend of Baroque, Gothic, and Oriental styles. Its most striking feature is its massive buttresses, made of stones, which were ingeniously incorporated into the structure to withstand earthquakes.

In 1993, Paoay Church was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Once here, don’t forget to take photos of the PAOAY signage in front of the church. Marvel at the beauty of the church and stroll around the surrounding restaurants, food stalls, and souvenir shops. We particularly recommend dropping by Kusina Valentin for a bite of pinakbet pizza while enjoying the view of the Paoay Church.

Location: Paoay

The Bangui Wind Mills is a set of 20 colossal wind turbines standing along the coastline of Bangui Bay. A project aimed at generating hydro-electric power for electricity, it has since become one of the most popular Ilocos Norte tourist spots.

Each wind turbine at Bangui stands at an impressive height of around 70 meters (230 feet), with massive blades spanning over 41 meters (135 feet) in diameter. Together, they form a captivating sight against the backdrop of the sea and clear skies.

When visiting here, don’t forget to check out the souvenir shop for miniature windmills that you can take home and check out other nearby activities, such as ATV rides.

Location: Bangui

The Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is one of the most popular tourist spots in Ilocos Norte. This geological wonder was carved by relentless forces of wind and sea along the coast of Burgos. Its name, “kapurpurawan” came from the Ilocano word “puraw” (or white), referring to the unique white limestone rocks found in the area.

To get here, you need to walk for about 3 kilometers from the main road or go on a horseback ride. Once you reach the rock formations, take a moment to enjoy the view of the limestone along the ocean and feel the fresh breeze. It’s a spot that’s as atypical as it is arresting.

Pro Tip : Visit here during early morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh sun glares.

Location: Burgos

One of the best things to do in Ilocos Norte is doing the 4×4 jeepney ride at the Paoay Sand Dunes ! This vast expanse of sand, continuously shaped by relentless forces of wind, offers a natural playground for adrenaline junkies and nature enthusiasts.

Start your adventure with the 4×4 ride across undulating terrain, navigating steep slopes and dips under the guidance of experienced drivers. Make a stopover along the beach for fun photographs. If seeking an extra dose of adrenaline, try sandboarding down the dunes, which you can do either standing up or sitting down.

You can also take photos of art installations at the sand dunes, like the Stacked Stones, Mirror Installation, and Temptation Island sculptures.

Also located in the town of Paoay, the Malacañang of the North is a stately mansion that once served as the official residence of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his family. The state is now open as a museum, offering a glimpse into their opulent lifestyle.

Constructed in the 1970s, the mansion is characterized by its spacious layout, imposing façade, and meticulous attention to detail (check out the grand staircase, built according to a superstition in luck).

You can explore the various rooms at the mansion, including the lavish furnishings, portraits, and photographs. Don’t forget to check out the balcony and second-floor windows for a beautiful view of Paoay Lake across.

The Patapat Viaduct is one of the classic must-sees especially if it’s your first time in Ilocos Norte.

Constructed to bypass a treacherous section of the North Luzon Expressway, the Patapat Viaduct serves as a vital link between the provinces of Ilocos Norte and Cagayan Valley. However, beyond its practical function as a transportation artery, the viaduct has become a popular tourist attraction in its own right.

The viaduct spans approximately 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) and is supported by elegant arches, similar to those seen in Europe. Perfected on the edge of the coastal cliffs, it offers panoramic views of the ocean, with waves crashing against the rocky shores.

It’s common for tourists to take pictures on the side — and even middle — of the road. If you’re planning to do this, just be safe and watch out for incoming vehicles on either side!

Location: Pagudpud

The Sinking Bell Tower is a historical landmark in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. It was built during the Spanish Colonial Era and has earned its nickname due to rumors that the tower is sinking an inch per year. According to local stories, in the past, it was possible for a person mounted on a horse to pass through the gates, but today you’d have to crawl through to get inside.

But is it really sinking? Sadly, getting inside the tower is currently prohibited so it is not possible to try it for yourself. According to our guide in our Ilocos tour, the bell tower is not actually sinking — rather, roads were built higher.

Another interesting fact about this bell tower is that it is located several meters away from the St. William Cathedral which it was built for.

Regardless of what you believe about the Sinking Bell Tower, it is still one of the must-see Ilocos Norte tourist spots.

Location: Laoag City

There is something charming about lighthouses. Perhaps it’s their unique architecture or the fact that they are perched on high locations with the most amazing views!

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is a Spanish Colonial-era lighthouse built atop a hill, overlooking the scenic coastline of Burgos, Ilocos Norte. It makes for a quick stopover during your Ilocos Norte itinerary and one that will leave you with great photos (and memories).

You can explore the base of the lighthouse, look at the items in the small museum, and of course appreciate the gorgeous view of the ocean from above. Don’t be shy in getting creative when it comes to picture taking; ask the guides at the lighthouse to show you the best spots!

To get here, you need to ride a tricycle to the parking area near the lighthouse. There are also souvenir shops and food stalls you can stop by along the way.

One of the two wind farms in the Ilocos Region, the Burgos Wind Farm is a 600-hectare project featuring 50 colossal wind turbines built along the rugged coastline in Burgos. The wind farm is so large that it covers three barangays and powers over 2 million households.

Similar to the Bangui Wind Farm, this place is also open to tourists who wish to see the windmills up close and take pictures of the structures against the backdrop of the ocean. Make sure to wear your best OOTD because this is one of the most scenic tourist spots in Ilocos Norte!

Next up on our list of Ilocos Norte tourist spots that you should see is Blue Lagoon (locally known as Maira-ira Beach), a white-sand beach aptly named for its vibrant blue hues.

The clear waters of Blue Lagoon are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and watersports such as banana boat, paddleboarding, and more. During the rainy season, Blue Lagoon — along with other spots in Pagudpud — becomes a surfing spot for beginner and pro surfers, with waves from 2 to 10 feet high.

While it is possible to visit Blue Lagoon on a day trip, it’s ideal to stay here overnight to make the most of your stay. There are plenty of resorts and homestays that you can book, depending on your preferences and budget.

From the Blue Lagoo, you can also visit nearby tourist spots including Bantay Abot Cave and Kabigan Falls .

Nestled along the coastline of Pagudpud is Saud Beach, a picturesque paradise renowned for its white sands, crystal-clear waters, and tranquil ambiance. Many attest that Saud Beach is one of the most underrated beaches in the Philippines; in fact, in 2023, Travel & Leisure listed it in their picks of Most Beautiful Beaches in the World .

Saud Beach is a great place for swimming for families, along with other watersports activities. There are also plenty of beachside resorts and cottages that you can rent overnight or in a day, as well as restaurants and bars for local and seafood delicacies.

Despite its beauty, Saud Beach remains relatively less crowded compared to Blue Lagoon and other beach destinations in the Ilocos Region.

If you’re looking to explore beyond the beach, Saud Beach is nearby other attractions in Pagudpud, such as Bangui Wind Farm, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, and Blue Lagoon.

The Ilocos Region is home to some of the most beautiful Spanish-era churches, and one of those is located at the town of Bacarra.

Bacarra Church (also called  St. Andrew the Apostle Church ) was built in 1593, featuring Baroque architecture with a prominent red brick exterior. Beside is it the Domeless Bell Tower, which was damaged by several earthquakes in the past until one finally toppled off its roofing.

The Bacarra Church is a beautiful spot to visit especially for those who love architecture. There is also a museum beside it that houses various artifacts about the town’s history.

Location: Bacarra

Kabigan Falls is an 80-feet waterfall tucked away in the lush forests of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. It is a secluded spot ideal for those who are looking for a short nature trip, with an ice-cold basin perfect for summer days.

Getting here is easy; in fact, it is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the area. You are required to secure a guide and then trek for 20-30 minutes across the jungle, depending on your pace. You can also go on a carabao ride and then trek for the rest of the way.

Make sure to bring snacks, water, and towels with you because there are no commercial structures in the waterfall area.

Pro Tip : Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

If you like going to beaches but hate the crowd, you’ll love the next item in our must-see tourist spots in Ilocos Norte.

Badoc Island is a privately owned island with a gorgeous white-sand beach, located 25 minutes away by boat from La Virgen Milagrosa Cove in Badoc, Ilocos Norte. This secluded spot is ideal for beach bumming, swimming, and of course taking lots of IG-worthy photos! Other activities include snorkeling, freediving, and hiking to see unique rock formations.

Since there are no commercial infrastructure in the island, only day tours are allowed.

As of 2022 , the island is listed for sale, with the local government hoping for it to be developed into a luxury resort. As of this writing, it is still part of the tourist spots of the Ilocos Norte tourism.

Location: Badoc

There is more to Ilocos Norte than its heritage structures, beaches, and windmills.

Opened to the public in 2022, Paoay Lake Water Park is one of the newest attractions in Ilocos Norte, featuring a hotel, a nice lakefront, and a sprawling water park with over 30 obstacle courses. Aside from the obstacle courses, there are also other activities including kayaking, paddle boarding, and volleyball.

For those who just want to chill, you can relax in one of the chic bean bags at the beachside while enjoying a summer drink of your choice.

You can visit here on a day pass or you can stay at the hotel overnight.

The easiest way to get to Ilocos is thru Laoag International Airport. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines flies from Manila to Laoag City.

Alternatively, you can also ride a bus from Manila to several destinations in Ilocos, including Laoag, Pagudpud, Vigan City, etc.

Vigan City tourist spots for historical and cultural immersion

1. calle crisologo​.

Calle Crisologo is probably Vigan’s most famous tourist spot and the starting point to every visitor’s exploration in the city.

When we came here, it was as though we instantly time-traveled to the Spanish colonial times. The cobblestone street is lined with Spanish ancestral homes, restaurants, and shops.

We completed our Calle Crisologo experience by riding a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage) where our driver toured us around the area. It turns even more magical at night so we had to revisit to see its nighttime splendor.

2. Crisologo Museum

Crisologo Museum is an ancestral house turned museum of the late congressman Floro S. Crisologo, one of Vigan’s prominent politicians.

Our museum guide Ms. Remy allowed us to explore the mansion and take photos of the memorabilia. It is free to enter Crisologo Museum but donations are highly encouraged to help with its maintenance.

3. National Museum of the Philippines – Ilocos (NMP – Ilocos)

The National Museum of the Philippines – Ilocos (NMP – Ilocos) is a heritage complex in Vigan composed of three historic buildings including the Old Carcel Museum, Padre Burgos House, and Magsingal Museum.

We only managed to enter Padre Burgos House , the ancestral home of Father José Burgos, one of the martyred priests who comprised the GOMBURZA. Inside the house, we saw some of his memorabilia and other items including an old printing press, native baskets, ceramics, and house furniture.

Entry to the complex is free of charge so it’s a really good place to learn more about Vigan, its people, and Philippine history in general.

4. Vigan Cathedral

Vigan Cathedral is an Earthquake Baroque-style church first built in 1574. It is located on Burgos Street, about 300 meters away from Padre Burgos House. You can opt to take the kalesa , tricycle, or simply walk to reach it.

We still managed to enter this majestic cathedral before. However, after the 7.3 magnitude earthquake on 27 July 2022, Vigan Cathedral is currently undergoing restoration and temporarily closed to the public.

5. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

Pagburnayan is a surviving pottery-making tradition in Vigan. It comes from the root word burnay , which means hand-crafted clay pots or jars from Vigan.

There are only a few pagburnayan makers left in Vigan and we couldn’t pass up the chance to visit one of them. Mang Bongbong showed us how it’s done and we also tried our hands at it, but the output was not as perfect as the one pictured above.

It’s truly a fun and immersive cultural experience every visitor to Vigan should try!

6. Bantay Church Bell Tower

The Bantay Church Bell Tower or Bantay Belfry is not exactly in Vigan City, but in the nearby town of Bantay. It is about 10 to 15 minutes away by kalesa from Calle Crisologo, and is often part of the Vigan Heritage Tour .

Built in the late 1500s atop a hill, it once served as a watchtower for foreign invaders during World War II. The town got its name from the Filipino word bantay , which means to guard.

Today, it is an iconic structure that stood the test of time and is one of the must-visit historical attractions in Ilocos Sur.

7. plaza burgos.

Since Father José Burgos was born in Vigan City, a number of sites in Ilocos were built to honor him and that includes the Plaza Burgos . It is located in the heart of Vigan City in the middle of Burgos, Crisologo, Florentino, and Jacinto streets. It is also just right beside the Vigan Cathedral.

While strolling around the plaza, be sure to sample their famous Vigan empanada. There are a number of food kiosks here selling this must-try Ilocos delicacy.

8. Plaza Salcedo

Plaza Salcedo was named after Spanish conquistador and Miguel López de Legazpi’s grandson Juan de Salcedo. It is a popular Vigan tourist spot close to the Vigan Cathedral, Ilocos Sur Capitol, and Plaza Burgos. The plaza becomes even more spectacular at night with its dancing fountain show.

As serene and picturesque as it is now, Plaza Salcedo actually holds a dark history. Did you know that it was the site where the Filipina revolutionary leader Gabriela Silang and her troops were executed?

9. Baluarte Zoo

If you’re looking for a family-friendly tourist destination in Vigan City, go to Baluarte Zoo . This zoological park in Vigan is the brainchild of businessman and former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson.

When we came here, we saw gigantic statues of dinosaurs as well as live wild animals including Bengal tigers and lions, snakes, and ostriches.

Baluarte Zoo also features a Safari Gallery where you’ll see preserved remains of animals from around the world.

10. Mindoro Beach

Do you know that there’s actually a beach in Vigan? Yes, the historic city is not all cityscapes and ancient structures. Discover this underrated tourist attraction in Vigan about 15 minutes by tricycle from the city proper.

Here, you can frolic by the beach and wait for the stunning sunset. It sure looks like a great place to cap off your day in Vigan City.
