Walking the Ancient Trails of Cappadocia - Premium Adventure

Walking the Ancient Trails of Cappadocia - Premium Adventure

Welcome to Georgia! Your tour leader will leave you a note at reception detailing on what time you will be meeting with the rest of your group. Tonight is free for an optional dinner – there are plenty of restaurants and cafes within a short walking distance of our hotel.

From the mountains to the sea today with a long drive to Batumi (approximately 7-8 hours) on the Black Sea coast. While past its Soviet heyday where it was one of the premiere seaside resorts, it is still popular with holiday makers from all over the region for its waterfront parks and beaches. Stay in a hotel tonight.

Depart from Batumi and transfer back to Tbilisi (approximately 5-6 hours) by private vehicle. Stop at local winery on the way for tasting and toast our time in Georgia together. Enjoy the rest of the day in the nation's capital, perhaps with group dinner and night out together.

Your trip ends after breakfast and there are no activities planned for the day.

Tour operator, intrepid travel, the intrepid travel experience.

If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.

Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.

Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.

Why Intrepid?

  •   Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
  •   Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
  •   Local leaders - authentic perspectives
  •   Local transport - get close and personal
  •   Local accommodation - experience real living
  •   Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.

Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.

Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.

On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:

  • Integrity – Doing the right thing
  • Responsible – Think global, act local
  • Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
  • Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
  • Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
  • Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

Best time to visit georgia.

Spring and autumn are the best times to head to Georgia. Summers (especially July and August) can be very hot and humid with temperatures reaching up to 40ºC. This is a great time to escape to the Black Sea or the mountains to cool off.

Winters can be very cold, although the country rarely freezes over. However, power supplies are frequently interrupted, so don’t rely on heating. This is a beautiful, fertile region so bring an umbrella and expect rain at any time of year!

Geography and environment

Georgia’s spiky topography makes for stunning scenery. The Greater Caucasus Mountains crisscross the country, divvying it up into pockets of forests, valleys and glaciers. Its only coastline runs 330 km along the stunning Black Sea. Georgia’s neighbours include the Russian Federation, Turkey , Armenia and Azerbaijan .

Culture and customs

Georgia is one of those countries with a truly unique geographical position, sitting on the border of two continents, Europe and Asia. Over time, the land known as Georgia has been invaded, conquered, fought over and divided by several of history’s greatest empires, including the Ottoman, Russian and Soviet Empires. But despite all this, the cultural identity of Georgia has held strong, with traditional language, dance, cuisine and stories still passionately celebrated across the nation.

Today, Georgia’s culture is more linked to Europe than Asia. The popularity of Christianity is thought to have been the largest factor for the more Western influence and this is especially noticeable when observing the architecture.

Today, Georgians still make up the majority of the population and hold true to their traditional language. Much research has been conducted about the Georgian alphabet. It is now thought that this unique alphabet and writing system was created as early as the 3 rd century BC before going through multiple variations leading to the modern writing system in use today.

There are several great ways to understand and appreciate Georgian history. One is to attend a Georgian supra, an ancient ritual that brings people together over a large meal to celebrate or commemorate important moments in life. Another great option is to watch a traditional folk dance. Performed in national dress, these dances communicate unique stories through fast-paced movements and various instrumental accompaniments.

Eating and drinking

What do you get when a country sits on the border of two mega continents and was once an important part of the Silk Road trade route? Only a cuisine abundant in tantalising tastes, unique ingredients and cooking techniques originating from all parts of the world.

And that’s not even mentioning the fact that Georgia has been producing wine since 6000 BC or that it's thought to be one of the first to use wheat and honey. Don’t just take our word for how tasty the food is. Instead, eat your way through the regional dishes and Georgian specialties on our 8 day Georgia Real Food Adventure tour.

Things to try in Georgia:

Not only is this dish a delicious dumpling filled with minced meat, spices and vegetables, but it’s also an old Georgian offering to the sun with the 28 folds symbolising the solar cycles. Found throughout the many regions of Georgia, you’ll likely hear the slurping of this tasty dumpling wherever you go.

Cheese and bread take on a whole new life in Georgia with one of their favourite dishes, khachapuri, found in every part of the country. There are many versions of the dish to try, from the three cheese varieties to those made with potato or an egg cracked on top. You'll also see a wide array of shapes and cooking techniques, depending on where you are in the country.

Nigvziani badrijani

Nigvziani badrijani is an eggplant and walnut dish that makes for a great light snack or appetizer, especially for vegetarians and vegans. Eggplants are a prominent vegetable in Georgia and are grown in every region of the country. Nigvziani badrijani can be prepared in different ways with some frying, grilling or baking the eggplant and combining it with the flavoured walnut spread.

Churchkhela

Churchkhela may look like candlewax, but in actuality, it’s a sweet treat of nuts and dried fruit threaded on a string and dipped in a mixture of grape juice, sugar and flour. After a good build-up of the grape mixture, the dish is left to air-dry. This gives the treat a lengthy shelf life, which came in handy when it was used for sustenance by Georgian soldiers of old.

Georgian wine

Evidence suggests wine has long been produced in and around Georgia since as early as 6000 BC. With such a lengthy amount of time winemaking, the Georgians can definitley create an aromatic glass of vino. Georgia also has around 500 varieties of indigenously grown grapes. When in town, you may be able to see how wine was made in a qvevri during ancient times.

Top experiences in Georgia

Best time to visit Georgia

Gergety church, on the hills in Georgia in the late afternoon sun

The best time to visit Georgia is from May to June or September to October as these months will have mild weather and fewer crowds. If you’re looking to catch some warm summer weather, the best months for enjoying the Black Sea beaches and hiking in the snow-free mountains are in July and August.

Best for: Christmas and New Year celebrations

The first month of the year is also the coldest month of the year but it’s also a time for several celebrations across the country. With two public holidays to bring in the start of the new year and two Orthodox Christian events later in the month, January is certainly a festive time.

Snowfall will increase this month along with the cold temperatures, although generally, in areas like Tbilisi, the most snow will fall in February.

Best for: skiing and snowboarding

Winter temperatures in the mountain regions can drop as low as -17ºC and generally won’t get warm again until May/June. Even coastal areas like Batumi on the Black Sea coast don’t see temperatures above 10ºC during February, so the best reason to visit Georgia this month is for the snow.

Georgia can get frequent power outages, meaning heating may not always be available.

Best for: low crowds and off-season prices

Although it may technically be the first month of spring, Georgia is still under the influence of winter in March. Snow will start to ease off as the summer season gets closer; however, it can be windy, especially in Tbilisi.

Best for: mild weather and small crowds

April is a transition month, with rain replacing snow and cool to comfortable temperatures found in the major travel areas. For those wanting to enjoy the sites without crowds, April is a great time to visit Georgia.

Best for: hiking and Georgian Independence Day

May is one of the best months to visit Georgia as wildflowers are blooming, hiking trails are opening, and long, sunny days are aplenty. By now, you’ll have great weather for all kinds of exploration both here in Georgia as well as in other countries in the Caucasus area .

This month also hosts Georgia’s Independence Day celebrations with parades, performances, and country pride found throughout the nation.

Best for: good weather and exploring

Temperatures around Georgia are largely comfortable in June, sitting between 16ºC minimum and 27ºC maximum temperatures in areas like Kutaisi and Batumi. Water temperatures on the Black Sea won’t quite be as warm as later in summer but June also means fewer mid-year visitors.

Best for: swimming at the beach or hiking

July is firmly a summer month for Georgia, with its capital city having an average maximum temperature of 30ºC. For those looking to sit back and relax, now’s the perfect time to soak up the sun by the pool or beach. There can be summer rain and thunderstorms in the west and central areas, so don’t be surprised if you get a bit of an afternoon shower.

Best for: sitting by the pool and adventure in the mountains

Similar to July, temperatures in August can be hot and muggy, but with the water sitting around 26ºC, a refreshing splash can easily cool you off. Lower mountain areas should be free of snow, meaning days can be spent caving, cycling, camping, horse riding, fishing and more out in Georgia’s beautiful natural landscape.

Best for: travelling in the Central or Eastern regions of Georgia

September and October are great months for those who prefer to travel outside the hottest time of the year. The weather is typically pleasant, with temperatures neither too hot nor cold in most popular locales. Some autumnal rain will likely be falling across the country, especially by the Black Sea coast where September and October are the heaviest rainfall months.

Best for: Wine and Cheese Festival and the Tbilisoba festival

October is generally the last month for great travel in Georgia, as both snowfall and lower temperatures can roll in by November.

You might get a chance to celebrate Tbilisoba if you are in Georgia this month. Tbilisoba is a public holiday where everyone enjoys an array of fun sports, cultural performances, local food and produce and ceremonies.

Best for: low crowds and cool weather

The second last month of the year has cool to cold temperatures in popular areas like Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi. With winter fast approaching, there’ll be heavy rainfall and less chance of clear skies throughout the country. November is typically the start of the long winter period, especially in the highland region, so expect snowy conditions in the mountains from now until March/April.

Where You'll Stay

Operated by intrepid travel.

Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. The company has grown but their mission remains the same: to change the way people see the world through sustainable, experience-rich travel
