Honeymoon when spring has sprung in Japan

Honeymoons in Japan—spring

Spring in Japan is associated with cherry blossom when the delicate pink sakura petals bloom across the country. A picnic under the trees with a glass of sakura champagne would be a memorable way to toast to your new life.

Many of the top spots are lit up at night, adding a little more romance to your experience. Expect large crowds at the major locations, so if you are looking for somewhere quiet and romantic, head to a peaceful local spot.

When is cherry blossom season in Japan?

If your spring honeymoon doesn't coincide with the fleeting blossoms, this season is still a great time to visit Japan. The weather is mild and generally stays clear until the rainy season begins in June. Along with autumn, it is the best time to get out and explore the country's modern and ancient cities.

*Be extra careful if you are planning a honeymoon from the end of April through the beginning of May. The Golden Week national holiday takes place at this time, and booking accommodation and transport becomes very difficult and expensive.

Okinawa is Japan's tropical paradise

Honeymoons in Japan—summer

Summer in Japan is very hot and humid, and in recent years temperatures in some of the major cities and landlocked prefectures have risen to over 40 degrees Celsius. Rather than exploring the sweltering towns and cities, the Japanese summer is perfect for spending time on the coast or above the clouds. For newlyweds looking to relax on the beach or do some serious trekking, Japan has plenty to offer.

Wherever you decide to stay in Okinawa, make sure you hire a car and explore the original local culture of the Okinawan islands. Kayak in the mangroves, taste the area's distinctive food and drink and schedule in some walks along the beach and view the spectacular sunsets.

Autumn in Japan is crisp and clear

Honeymoons in Japan—autumn

Autumn in Japan is crisp and clear and a great time for outdoorsy couples to visit Japan. The Japanese summer tends to linger on until the end of September, however from mid-October to mid-December the weather is good. While exploration is possible throughout the year, the comfortable climate makes it a great season to spend time in the cities and countryside.

As fall is an ideal season for exploring the country, why not follow in the footsteps of Japan's first honeymoon couple or visit certain shrines for some spiritual marriage support from the gods?

Head out into Japan's wintry wilds

Honeymoons in Japan—winter

Winter in Japan might be very cold, but there are plenty of opportunities to warm up in private onsen, ski and experience winter illuminations.

Japan's traditional ryokan hotels offer guests high levels of hospitality and are often set in deep nature, making them the ideal choice for a honeymoon getaway, especially during the winter. Many ryokan offer in-room dining, allowing you to feast on meticulously crafted kaiseki dining without leaving the comfort and warmth of your room. Many ryokan also provide private onsen. Bathing in bubbling hot springs just for the two of you offers an authentic and private Japanese experience. Reserving a private outdoor onsen becomes a magical experience in the winter when the snow is falling.

The Most Romantic Honeymoon Destinations in Japan

Have the honeymoon of a lifetime at a stunningly romantic Japanese getaway

Contributor

With its electric cities and contrasting serene wilderness – bamboo forests, bubbling hot springs, mountain temples – it’s no wonder that Japan woos all kinds of honeymooners. Spend a few days immersed in the beer and atmosphere of Tokyo ‘s izakaya pubs, the fun of its 24-hour karaoke booths and the thrill of its skyscraping shopping malls. Then strike out for some time à deux at private historic inns hidden in deep-green forest, or Okinawan beach resorts just made for intimate downtime. Whatever the season, whatever your interests, whatever your budget – you name it, this diverse country has it.

Nara is an intimate city where deer roam freely

While the Unesco-recognised city has an array of temples and shrines to rival Japan’s historic hub Osaka – including Todai-ji, home to a soaring bronze Buddha – Nara attracts only a fraction of the tourists. A compact town, it feels far more intimate, too – which means less time on public transport as you dart between the sights and more fun hours together meeting the friendly local deer (they roam freely around Nara Park) or strolling aimlessly in manicured Isuien Garden.

If, for you, a honeymoon is not a honeymoon without a beach, then factor in time in Okinawa, Japan’s cluster of southerly isles, all white-sand beaches , turquoise surf and superb diving. You can make the most of lazy, sun-drenched days, while a unique culture and cuisine (featuring purple sweet potatoes, bitter gourd and local beef) present an intriguing alternative to travels elsewhere in Japan. If you’re looking for luxurious five-star resorts, focus on the main island of Okinawa. Should lesser-developed idylls sound more enticing, explore the Yaeyama chain.

Explore the hidden corners of Shikoku à deux

It’s just a bridge away from Japan’s main island, Honshu, but Shikoku feels a bit like a lost world. One of Japan’s least-explored corners, it’s a land of lush hills dotted with hidden temples (the island is famed for its 88-temple pilgrimage), rushing rivers and photogenic castles. Squirrel yourselves away for a couple of days at a forest-coddled onsen (hot-springs) retreat – staying in a traditional tatami mat-lined room – then summon the courage to cross the Kazurabashi, Iya Valley’s famous wobbly rope bridge.

Hokkaido is the perfect honeymoon spot for outdoorsy couples

Japan’s northernmost reaches might not sound like classic honeymoon territory, but if the two of you find romance in the great outdoors, Hokkaido is a distinctly rewarding destination. Winter visits mean guaranteed snow, skiing, dramatic ice-carvings and evenings sipping pints at capital Sapporo’s namesake brewery – the perfect preamble to an evening of lovey-dovey intimacy. Summer is the season for mountain hikes and walks through lavender fields, making the most of your binoculars – there’s a lot of bird life.

Combine the urban and the rural in Kanagawa Prefecture

This prefecture south of Tokyo is a natural go-to for honeymooners, not least because it’s home to Hakone, one of Japan’s pin-up romantic towns, with bubbling onsen and ryokan inns . Proximity to the Japanese capital makes it perfect for a “rurban” (rural-meets-urban) getaway, so meals in Tokyo’s finest sushi restaurants can be followed (or preceded) by afternoons exploring historic seaside Kamakura, snapping selfies outside Odawara Castle and watching the sun set off of picturesque Enoshima Island. Finally, for the Instagram feed, on clear days you can glimpse Mount Fuji from pretty much anywhere in the prefecture.

Kyoto’s atmospheric temples help make it one of the most romantic destinations in Japan

Made photo-famous by its traditionally clad geishas scuttling through side alleys, ancient Kyoto – the original capital – is one of the most romantic destinations in the entire country. It is a city of tranquil zen gardens and atmospheric Shinto temples, bamboo forests and time-honoured, low-rise ryokan inns , in which you sleep on the matted ground and sit cross-legged for meals. While in the city, treat yourself one night to the pinnacle of Japanese dining: multi-course kaiseki , which approximates Western haute cuisine.

Miyajima’s torii gate seems to float on water

The little island of Miyajima, just beyond the city of Hiroshima, pulls crowds with its postcard torii gate. The original was raised in 1875 – this is the eighth incarnation; vermilion-lacquered, with a roof of cypress bark, it seems to float on the water at high tide, mirroring itself. The tiny island town has accommodation for all budgets, from traditional inns to waterfront resort hotels. Explore Miyajima ’s beautiful shrines and temples, encounter the docile population of wild deer, and hike up Mount Misen for panoramic island views.

Fuji’s Five Lakes

The Fuji Five Lake region offers romantic views of Mount Fuji

One of the best views of Mount Fuji can be had from the Fuji Five Lake region, which lies at the northern foot of the sacred mountain – a still-active volcano. The most developed of the five by far is Kawaguchiko, and the resort town of the same name is a hit among hikers, anglers, canoe amateurs and professionals and other nature enthusiasts. The most interesting museum is arguably the Itchiku Kubota Museum, all about the history of silk-dyeing for kimonos. There are hot-spring onsen for a more leisurely few honeymoon days.

Tokyo in the spring is a stunning display of cherry blossoms

You don’t come to high-tech, 24/7 Tokyo specifically for intimacy, but for newlyweds it’ll certainly be a honeymoon to remember, with its five-star hotels and world-class dining. For all the high-rise concrete and plate glass, the pretty parks and serene shrines will kindle romance. In spring, the pink sakura trees cast blossom like confetti showers. Summer means exciting street festivals, while winter brings gorgeous holiday lighting called “illumination”. And that twinkly nighttime view of this magical city? It’s all yours, all year round.

Hakone’s scenic beauty lends a romantic atmosphere

The idyllic mountain town of Hakone – just a short train ride out of Tokyo on the Odakyu Romancecar – is a beloved weekend getaway destination for the Japanese. It’s an area rich in scenic beauty, and it’s a cinch to explore, particularly if you ride the cable car and try the ropeway over the mountain. There’s even romance in the sightseeing cruise that takes you across the serene lake in a reproduction pirate ship. Enjoy the restorative waters of the natural hot springs and while the day away at one of the many intriguing museums.

Karuizama is a popular resort town for couples

It’s a popular couples’ resort town for good reason: picturesque cherry blossoms in spring, lush green swathes of nature in summer, fiery foliage in autumn and snowy horizons when winter blows in. Much of the local architecture is reminiscent of a quaint European hamlet, and the wooden chapels frequently host Western-style weddings. Come the festive season, the town turns into a charming Christmas village – and if you thought it couldn’t get more honeymoon-perfect, there’s the chance to ice-skate hand in hand.

Hida-Takayama

Step back in time strolling through old town Takayama’s streets

Kyoto doesn’t have the monopoly on traditional charms: the secluded mountain town of Hida-Takayama is honeymoon heaven. Old Town Takayama is one of the best-preserved historic quarters in Japan; wandering through its streets, you’ll feel you’ve stepped back centuries. It’s also one of the few places where you can enjoy Hida beef, a brand of domestic wagyu to rival Kobe’s finest. Just a short distance from Hida-Takayama is the historic village of Shirakawa-go, designated a Unesco World Heritage site for its unique thatched-roof farmhouses.

About Japan

Average cost of a one week japan honeymoon.

The cost of a one-week honeymoon in Japan can vary widely depending on your preferences, travel style, and the time of year you visit. Here’s a general breakdown of costs for an average honeymoon:

International round-trip flights for two people can range from $1,000 to $2,500 or more per person, depending on your departure location, airline choice, and the time of booking. So, the total cost for flights may range from $2,000 to $5,000.

Accommodations

The type of accommodations you choose will significantly impact your budget. A mid-range hotel may cost between $150 to $300 per night, while luxury hotels can go well above $500 per night. For a week-long stay, budget for approximately $1,050 to $2,100 for accommodations.

Daily Expenses

Daily expenses, including meals, local transportation, activities, and shopping, can vary widely. On average, the budget is around $150 to $300 per day for two people. This includes dining at a mix of restaurants, local transportation, and some sightseeing. For a week, this amounts to approximately $1,050 to $2,100.

Average Total Cost

Adding all these costs together, a one-week honeymoon in Japan for two people could range from $4,100 to $9,200 or more. Keep in mind that this is a rough estimate, and your actual expenses may vary based on your preferences and travel choices. Additionally, consider factors like travel insurance, visa fees (if applicable), and unexpected expenses when planning your budget.

Best Time to Visit Japan

The best time to visit Japan for your honeymoon depends on your preferences and what you’d like to experience during your trip. Japan offers unique attractions and experiences throughout the year, so consider the following factors when planning your honeymoon:

  • Cherry Blossom Season (Sakura): Spring, particularly late March to early April, is one of the most popular times to visit Japan. During this time, cherry blossoms bloom all over the country, creating stunning pink and white landscapes. It’s a romantic and picturesque time for a honeymoon.
  • Fall Foliage (Koyo): Late October to November is another beautiful season to visit. Japan’s autumn foliage is breathtaking, with vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves. The weather is generally pleasant, and it’s a great time for outdoor activities.
  • Avoid Peak Seasons: To avoid crowds and high prices, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons, which are late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to early October).
  • Winter Wonderland: If you both enjoy winter sports or cozying up in hot springs (onsen), the winter months of December to February offer snowy landscapes and a unique cultural experience. Hokkaido is a popular destination for winter activities.
  • Summer Festivals: If you’re interested in experiencing Japanese festivals and events, summer (June to August) offers numerous options, including fireworks festivals (Hanabi) and traditional festivals like Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.
  • Budget: Peak tourist seasons, such as cherry blossom season and Golden Week (late April to early May), can be more expensive. Be prepared for higher hotel and transportation costs during these times.
  • Personal Preferences: Consider your personal interests and activities you’d like to include in your honeymoon. Whether it’s cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, or relaxation, choose a time that aligns with your preferences.

Ultimately, the best time for your honeymoon in Japan depends on what you both enjoy and what kind of experience you want to have. Be sure to check the weather forecasts, book accommodations well in advance, and plan your itinerary accordingly to make the most of your romantic trip to Japan.

Honeymooning in Japan can be a memorable and unique experience. To make the most of your trip, here’s what you should know about the culture, currency, and cuisine in Japan:

In Japanese society, politeness and respect are highly valued. Learn about basic Japanese etiquette, such as bowing, taking off your shoes before entering someone’s home, and giving or receiving objects with both hands. It is usual in Japan to give and receive presents. Bring tiny, thoughtful gifts for hosts or acquaintances you may meet on your journey.

While many Japanese people in urban areas understand some English, learning a few basic Japanese words will help you navigate daily circumstances and show respect to the locals.

There are many magnificent shrines and temples in Japan. Respect these hallowed sites by dressing appropriately and keeping a peaceful demeanor.

Many guests insist on visiting an onsen. Learn about onsen etiquette, which includes cleansing well before entering, not wearing swimwear, and remaining silent.

The Japanese Yen (JPY) is the country’s official currency. Learn about the current exchange rate and bring some cash with you because not all places accept credit cards, especially in rural areas.

  • ATMs: ATMs are commonly available in Japan, particularly in major cities and convenience stores. However, certain ATMs may not take foreign cards, so plan ahead of time to locate international ATMs.
  • Credit Cards: Most major hotels, restaurants, and retail stores accept credit cards. Carrying cash is recommended for smaller shops, local cafes, and transportation.
  • Sushi and Sashimi: Japan is renowned for its fresh and delicious sushi and sashimi. Try these dishes at a traditional sushi restaurant for an authentic experience.
  • Ramen: Enjoy a bowl of steaming ramen, a popular and hearty noodle soup available in various regional styles.
  • Tempura: Tempura consists of lightly battered and deep-fried vegetables and seafood. It’s a delightful treat often served with a dipping sauce.
  • Izakayas: These Japanese-style pubs offer a wide range of dishes and drinks. They’re a great place to sample various Japanese dishes in a casual setting.
  • Kaiseki: For a special occasion, consider trying kaiseki, a traditional multi-course meal that showcases seasonal ingredients and culinary artistry.
  • Japanese Breakfast: Many traditional Japanese inns (ryokan) offer a delicious and elaborate Japanese breakfast, which often includes rice, miso soup, grilled fish, and various side dishes.
  • Allergies and Dietary Restrictions: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, it’s important to learn how to communicate your needs in Japanese or have a translation card that explains your dietary restrictions.

Remember that learning about Japanese cuisine can be a fun adventure, and it’s important to taste a range of dishes to properly appreciate the country’s culinary culture. Furthermore, respecting Japanese culture and customs will enhance your honeymoon experience in Japan.

Best Activities for a Japan Honeymoon

A honeymoon in Japan offers a wide range of activities that can make your trip memorable and romantic. Here are some of the best activities to consider:

  • Cherry Blossom Viewing (Hanami): If you visit during cherry blossom season (late March to early April), consider having a picnic or a leisurely stroll in a park filled with cherry blossoms. It’s a quintessential and incredibly romantic experience.
  • Visit Traditional Temples and Shrines: Explore historic temples and shrines, such as Kyoto’s Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) or Fushimi Inari Taisha. These serene and picturesque sites offer a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage.
  • Stay in a Ryokan: Spend a night or more in a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) for a truly authentic experience. Enjoy tatami mat rooms, futon beds, kaiseki meals, and soothing hot spring baths (onsen).
  • Cruise on Lake Ashi: In Hakone, take a boat ride on Lake Ashi with a backdrop of Mt. Fuji. The scenery is stunning, especially during autumn when the foliage is colorful.
  • Japanese Gardens: Stroll through beautifully landscaped Japanese gardens like Kenrokuen in Kanazawa or the Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu. These gardens offer tranquility and serene beauty.
  • Romantic Train Journeys: Consider taking a scenic train journey, such as the Hakone Tozan Railway or the Sagano Scenic Railway. These routes offer breathtaking views of the Japanese countryside.
  • Couples’ Onsen Experience: Relax in an onsen (hot spring) together. Japan has many onsen resorts with private or communal baths where you can soak in mineral-rich hot water while surrounded by nature.
  • Tea Ceremony: Participate in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, where you can learn about the art of preparing and enjoying matcha (green tea).
  • Kimono Photoshoot: Rent a traditional kimono or yukata and have a photo shoot at a historic location like Kyoto’s Gion district or a picturesque garden.
  • Culinary Adventures: Embark on a foodie journey and explore the diverse regional cuisines of Japan. Try street food, dine in Michelin-starred restaurants, and experience a sake tasting.
  • Hike in Nature: If you and your partner enjoy the outdoors, consider hiking in areas like the Japanese Alps or Yakushima Island. Japan offers diverse landscapes, from mountains to forests and coastlines.
  • Night Illuminations: Some places in Japan, such as Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills and Nabana no Sato in Nagoya, host stunning illuminations during the winter season, creating a magical atmosphere for an evening stroll.
  • Experience a Traditional Festival: Check the local calendar for any traditional festivals or events happening during your visit. These festivals often feature traditional music, dance, and colorful processions.
  • Private Tours: Consider booking private tours or experiences tailored to your interests, whether it’s art, history, or adventure activities.
  • Relax and Unwind: Take time to relax in your accommodations, whether it’s a luxurious city hotel or a peaceful countryside ryokan. Enjoy spa treatments, and room service, or simply savor each other’s company.

Always consider your hobbies and preferences as a couple while choosing your activities. You can design the ideal honeymoon itinerary for you and your partner by choosing from a variety of cultural, historical, natural, and culinary activities available in Japan.

Is Japan Safe for a Honeymoon?

For a honeymoon, Japan is typically regarded as a welcoming and safe location. The following are some important elements that support Japan’s standing as a safe destination for tourists:

Low Crime Rate: Japan boasts one of the lowest rates of larceny and violent crime in the entire globe. You can typically travel about cities and towns without worrying about personal safety because petty crime is uncommon.

Respect and Courtesy: Courtesy and respect for others are highly valued in Japanese society. It is common practice to be kind and welcoming to visitors, which heightens the sense of security.

Clean and Well-Maintained: Japanese public services are renowned for their effectiveness and cleanliness. All around the country, there are clean streets, efficient public transportation systems, and facilities.

Natural disaster Risk is Low: Although earthquakes, tsunamis, and typhoons are common in Japan, the nation has modern infrastructure and early warning systems in place to reduce hazards. Typically, tourists are knowledgeable about safety precautions to take during natural disasters.

Effective Transportation: The punctuality, safety, and usability of Japan’s transportation system are well-known. Whether you’re using the bus, subway, or train, your trip will probably be dependable and secure.

Healthcare: Japan’s superb healthcare system includes cutting-edge hospitals and clinics. In major cities, it’s also typical for medical professionals to speak some English.

Low-Risk Diseases: Because of its strong hygiene regulations, Japan is not a high-risk travel destination for infectious diseases.

However, it’s crucial to take reasonable safety precautions, just like with any other trip destination:

  • Watch out for your possessions, especially in crowded places.
  • Respect regional laws and traditions.
  • Find out who to call in an emergency and where the nearest embassy or consulate is.
  • Due to left-handed driving laws, exercise caution when crossing streets. When dining out, be sure to express your needs in detail if you have allergies or dietary restrictions.

In general, Japan is a lovely and secure location for a honeymoon. You can have a worry-free and unforgettable romantic holiday with careful planning and sensitivity to the local culture.

In This Article

With its abundance of pristine nature and vibrant cities, Japan has long been a beloved honeymoon destination for all types of couples, from city lovers to those seeking wellness experiences or nature-focused adventures.

Whether you want to shred it up on the crisp, powdery snow in Niseko, explore some of the oldest temples in Kyoto, or take a private sushi-making class in Tokyo, the country has activities for just about everyone. If this sounds like something you and your soon-to-be spouse have been searching for, keep reading for everything you need to know about planning an unforgettable Japan honeymoon.

Planning Your Japan Honeymoon

From experiencing the cherry blossoms (sakuras) to enjoying a private onsen (hot spring) in the mountains, Japan offers incredible cities to explore and ample opportunities for both relaxation and adventure.

With regards to when to visit, experts say all year round is great, but it truly depends on what you’re looking for in your honeymoon . For moderate weather, spring and autumn are your best bet. While spring is breathtaking in Japan, it’s also peak tourist season due to the cherry blossoms, so expect higher occupancy and prices. However, if you’re into snow sports and aiming to avoid crowds, the winter months (December to February) are the best. While two weeks is ideal, 10 to 12 days is absolutely enough time to get a good feel for the country.

  • Language: Japanese
  • Currency: Yen
  • When To Go: Anytime, but winter is best for skiing and spring is ideal for catching the cherry blossoms (typically bloom between March to April).
  • Getting There: Japan is about a 10 to 15-hour plane ride just about everywhere in the U.S. Nonstop service is available from bigger cities like New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, and a few others.
  • Transportation: In terms of getting around Japan, the train system is the best. Bullet trains make it super convenient to get to all the main cities. For the ski and nature towns, you’ll likely have to take domestic flights. In the cities, public transportation (like the subway) is an affordable, quick way to get around, and there is also a bus service available.
  • Must-Pack: Depending on what your itinerary is, you’ll want to bring some outdoor or ski wear, along with cute, comfortable outfits for exploring around the city. Pack a bathing suit, too, since most hotels have an indoor pool.

Places to Stay During Your Japan Honeymoon

An assortment of intimate boutique properties and larger, luxurious hotels make up the hotel scene in Japan. Whether you’re looking for something off the beaten path or accommodations with luxe amenities, Japan has fabulous accommodation options for all honeymooners.

Courtesy of Aman

With unobstructed views of the Tokyo skyline and Imperial Gardens, Aman Tokyo is an exemplary reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. Oversized rooms with a simple, pared-back Japanese-inspired design include large bathtubs overlooking the view, a perfect spot for two. After a day of exploring all Tokyo has to offer, book yourself a couples massage in a spa, followed by time spent enjoying the pool—that’s 30-plus floors above the street— atop the reclining daybeds. And while the property is a splurge, the hotel team goes above and beyond, filling every request, which will just make your time there much more meaningful.

Park Hyatt Kyoto

Located atop a hill overlooking the city, the Park Hyatt Kyoto consists of just 70 rooms, offering just the right amount of privacy. Boasting gorgeous views of the nearby temples, private gardens for the rooms, and cozy vibes throughout the property, the hotel, dubbed as the guesthouse, feels like a peaceful oasis from the second you walk in.

Nestled in the midst of the lush green island of Yakushima, Sankara is a nature lover's dream. According to Heald, the resort is the perfect launching point for hiking up to see thousand-year-old sacred sugi trees that blanket the small remote destination. Secluded between mountains and forests, the picturesque spot serves as a fantastic place to relax with the sounds of nature echoing in the background.

The Ritz-Carlton Nikko

Monk-led meditation sessions, complementary nature excursions, lakefront views, and a private indoor and outdoor onsen make the Ritz-Carlton Nikko a must for those planning to travel to the region just outside of Tokyo. Savor the delicious food using local ingredients and daily fish catches at the onesie restaurant, visit the nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites, and take advantage of the beautiful nature surrounding the property by exploring the nearby waterfalls, lakes, and wetlands with a guided bike ride to maximize your time at the property.

Nishimuraya Honkan

A visit to Japan isn’t complete without a stay at a traditional Japanese ryokan, and Nishimuraya Honkan is one of the best. “This traditional ryokan serves delicious kaiseki cuisine and is the ideal base for exploring the area and soaking in the town’s numerous public onsens,” explains Heald. The property has over 160 years of history, and although it’s in the center of town, the lush gardens surrounding it offer ample privacy.

Conrad Osaka

Sweeping views, twinkling lights, and floor-to-ceiling windows are some of the main features upon entering the Conrad Osaka . Set on one of the highest floors of the Nakanoshima Festival West Tower building, it’s a heavenly spot to enjoy the picturesque sunset with cocktails (or mocktails) for two. The spacious guest rooms, yuzu-or-sake-infused treatments in the luxe spa, and proximity to the city’s main attractions are added bonuses.

Zaborin Ryokan

This luxury ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) is the ideal place for couples to simply relax. Hidden within the lush forests of Niseko, all of the 15 secluded villas have private onsens (both indoor and outdoor), along with large windows with immaculate views of the surrounding white birch trees. Grab a book or movie from the lobby to take back to your room, dress up for a cocktail at their lobby bar with volcano views, or arrange a multi-course omakase meal experience to make the most of your stay.

The Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz Carlton Reserve

If you’re looking to take advantage of Niseko’s powdery snow, The Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz Carlton Reserve , offers the ability for guests to ski in or out directly onto the slopes. With just 50 rooms and suites, the serene alpine getaway is meant to help guests discover themselves through nature, offering activities like snowmobiling, snowboarding, snow-shoe tours, and more. But if you aren’t into cold weather, the green mountain forests, an assortment of outdoor activities, wildflower fields, and local dairy farms are equally as exciting.

Things to Do During Your Japan Honeymoon

Whether you’re traveling around the country or sticking to a few cities, there’s no lack of activities to do in Japan. Here are a few of the activities that we recommend, ranging from taking advantage of the great outdoors to immersing yourself in the country’s rich culture.

Explore Nature

From bamboo forests to picturesque mountains, Japan is filled with beautiful scenery. Adventurous couples will adore hiking, bike rides, or guided nature walks through some of the most popular spots (like Nikko).

Enjoy Winter Sports

If you’re heading to Japan during the winter, you must head up to Niseko to take advantage of the fresh, powdery snow. Activities like snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling are available at most resorts.

Take a Cooking Class

You can’t get a taste of Japan without trying to learn some of its iconic dishes. Learn how to make traditional dishes such as homemade gyoza, ramen, or sushi, and come home with a few new tricks to spice up date night.

See the Shrines and Temples

Arguably some of the most iconic symbols of Japan are opulent shrines and temples scattered throughout the country. Visit the popular ones (like Fushimi Inari in Kyoto) or head to the ‘love shrines’ where you can go to get a blessing on your new marriage. Either way, the structures are spectacular and rooted in so much history.

Have a Cherry Blossom Picnic

If you’re honeymooning during sakura season (around March to April), be sure to incorporate a daytime or sunset picnic into your itinerary. Your hotel can arrange an experience or you can grab food at some of the stalls within the parks and do something a little impromptu.

Take a Sake Brewery Tour

If you and your significant other are food lovers, you'll adore a tour of a Sake Brewery, an alcohol made from fermented rice. During the experience, you can see the entire process from start to finish and then try out a few of them (along with unique treats like sake ice cream) when you finish. The process of making sake is rooted in a lot of history and it’s a fun, easygoing activity that you’ll both enjoy.

Visit Museums and Exhibits

Regardless of whether you want to immerse yourself in an interactive exhibit (like the TeamLab Planets in Tokyo) or something a bit quieter (like the Mori Museum in Tokyo), you’ll be able to find a whole slew of fun options within the cities.

  • Can't-Miss Romantic Experience: During the spring and fall, head onboard the Sagano Romance Train that runs through Kyoto. The open-air train ride runs through the gorgeous scenery and is a must-do for couples. Once you hop off the train, take a scenic boat ride back where the boatman uses long bamboo poles to steer.

Where to Eat During Your Japan Honeymoon

Japanese cuisine is rooted in a lot of fish, thanks to the fact that it’s an island. Traditional dishes vary based on the region, but you’ll find different varieties of ramen, soba, and sushi all over the country. Here are a few of our can't-miss spots to experience during your romantic getaway:

Toriyo Roppongi

Yakitori, a popular street food in Japan, is typically a grilled chicken skewer. Toriyo Roppongi in Tokyo opts to give the traditional snack an upgrade by serving it omakase-style. Couples can expect a meal that includes seven different varieties of the dish and a few egg-based dishes mixed in. With breathtaking views of the Tokyo tower and the surrounding skyline, it’s a perfect spot for honeymooners to dine.

A visit to Tokyo must include udon, and Taniya is the perfect spot. Upon walking into the small shop, prepare to be dazzled by the glass-encased udon-making area where chefs hand-make the popular noodle in front of your eyes.

Try your hand at some of Japan’s most popular sweets (like shaved ice) in a restaurant in Kyoto that sits alongside romantic koi ponds.

The Barn by Odin

With a focus on fresh and local produce, you’ll adore the farm-to-table menu in this delicious Hokkaido spot. While the dishes are ever-changing, the delicious cocktails and drinks are not, and they are equally as delicious.

Sushi Wakon

Located within the Four Seasons Kyoto, Sushi Wakon provides an intimate, private sushi experience for all diners. Each dish is crafted with ingredients that are flown in daily from Tokyo’s Toyosu market, and the chef prepares everything right in front of you during the interactive dinner.

For traditional Soba, head to Rakuichi , a small Hokkaido restaurant where the noodles are made right before your eyes. The menu is ever-changing, based on seasonal ingredients, but you can always expect the noodles to be fresh, chewy, and delicious.

Budgeting for Your Japan Honeymoon

Japan can be a relatively affordable destination, however, with the flight costs from the U.S., a trip can get quite pricey—especially if you go during peak season or plan to fly in business class for the 10-plus hour journey. Hotels are generally expensive, whereas activities, food, and transportation are very reasonable. Because of this, it’s best to budget more rather than less so you can make the most of your once-in-a-lifetime trip .

If you’re looking for ways to keep your honeymoon on the less expensive side , it’s worth checking out Airbnbs or staying in hotels that aren’t in the center of the city. Booking your airfare well in advance or with points or miles can be a huge cost saver, too.

Honeymoon in Japan: Unique Ideas and Experiences

If you love food, culture, and immersive travel experiences, it’s no surprise you’re thinking about a Japan honeymoon.

As one of the world’s most fascinating countries, over the last several years Japan has become an increasingly popular honeymoon destination.

At Boutique Japan, we specialize in unique custom Japan itineraries , and since 2013 have been fortunate to plan honeymoons for wonderful couples from around the world ( read about some of their experiences ).

Below you’ll find essential tips on when to go, destinations to visit, where to stay — and of course, what to see, do, and eat during your Japan honeymoon!

Japan Honeymoon Planning 101: When to Visit

When it comes to honeymoons, scheduling is the first key question.

Will you visit immediately after your wedding? If so, planning your wedding and planning your honeymoon go virtually hand in hand, and you may have slightly less choice about when to visit Japan.

If you’re planning a Later Moon, then it’s worth thinking about when exactly you’d like to visit. For example, the decision may come down to whether you prefer warm or cool weather — or whether you’d rather travel at an off-peak time of year to see fewer tourists.

Each season in Japan has its charms. The spring cherry blossom season and fall tend to be the most popular times to visit, whereas summer and winter are slightly lower seasons. If you don’t mind avoiding peak seasons, there is perhaps nothing more sublime than soaking in an open-air onsen (hot spring) bath while snow falls all around you in winter .

For much more detail on the pros and cons of different times of year, read more about Japan’s seasons and the weather here .

Designing Your Itinerary: Where to Go

Once your dates are set, next comes the best (and sometimes hardest) part of the planning process: deciding where in Japan to go. But before diving into destinations, take these essential factors into account.

How Many Days Will You Have in Japan?

Our suggestions for your honeymoon depend on how long you’ll be in the country, and what kind of travel pace and experience you envision for this once-in-a-lifetime trip. Here are a couple of questions to ask yourself and, most importantly, discuss with your partner!

  • Are you looking for a more active trip overall, or something more relaxing and rejuvenating?
  • Do you prefer visiting fewer places and spending more time in each (slow travel), or would you rather fit in as much as possible, even if it means some rushing around?

Of course, maybe you’re somewhere in the middle and prefer a balance, taking it slow at times, and moving fast when it makes sense. To ensure your itinerary is a good match for each of you, it’s essential for both of you to get on the same page.

Especially for newer couples, it’s also essential to think about the following:

  • Which trip priorities do you both agree on, and where do your opinions differ? For example, maybe you both love sushi , but one of you loves modern art or Japanese gardens more than the other.
  • What compromises are each of you willing to make for the other? For example, are you willing to spend a day visiting Kyoto’s shrines and temples to make your partner happy, even if you’d rather be checking out hip coffee shops?

Sample Itineraries for Inspiration

To help provide inspiration for your Japan honeymoon, we’ve included a variety of sample itineraries, organized by approximate trip length. Any of these sample trips can be completely customized to ensure a totally personalized honeymoon experience.

Less Than One Week (Mini Moons)

If you’re taking a Mini Moon, we believe less is more. For example, with five days in Japan we’d typically suggest focusing primarily on either Tokyo or Kyoto. Or here is an example of a six-day Japan trip, which includes more time for urban immersion (and food!) along with an ultra-relaxing stay at a gorgeous traditional ryokan in Tokyo’s countryside .

If You’re Planning a Longer Honeymoon

Our sample trip for eight days in Japan is a classic itinerary that can be creatively customized depending on your interests. With just one extra day and nine days in Japan , you can have an even wider variety of experiences (every day counts!).

If you’re splurging on a longer honeymoon, our 11-day luxury Japan itinerary is a great place to start for travelers who want to visit a variety of distinct destinations. On the other hand, our 13-day luxurious countryside itinerary is a great example of how you can design a slow-paced trip focused on traditional Japanese-style relaxation at beautiful ryokans around the country.

Accommodations for an Exceptional Honeymoon in Japan

Even if you’re not seeking luxury all the way, chances are you’re looking for at least one special splurge. After all, this is your honeymoon!

For most travelers, staying at a high-end traditional ryokan (Japanese-style inn) is one of the most splurge-worthy experiences you can have in Japan. Much more than just a place to sleep, staying at a ryokan is a profound cultural and culinary experience.

For your honeymoon, consider choosing a luxury ryokan that offers rooms with private onsen . Imagine relaxing in your beautiful wood or stone bath as you gaze out into the forest (and it’s even more magical when it snows).

Along with its wealth of dazzling ryokans, Japan is also home to some of the world’s most stunning hotels, and below are a few of our honeymoon favorites.

Luxury Ryokans and Hotels for Your Japan Honeymoon

  • Asaba, a beautiful ryokan in lovely Shuzenji Onsen, in Japan’s Izu Peninsula
  • Beniya Mukayu, a luxurious ryokan near the Japan Sea coast, about one hour from the historic city of Kanazawa
  • Aman Tokyo, one of a handful of our favorite luxury hotels in the Tokyo metropolis
  • Nishimuraya Honkan, a beautiful ryokan in the charming onsen town of Kinosaki Onsen
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto, a beautiful hotel with an impeccable location on the Kamogawa river in the ancient capital Kyoto

The Ultimate Japan Honeymoon Guide: Japan Honeymoon Tips & Best Hotels

Planning your Japan honeymoon?  Few destinations can deliver on the promise of an epic adventure like a honeymoon in Japan. Discover the best destinations and top tips with this guide.

Japan may be one of the more unusual honeymoon destinations in Asia , but it shouldn’t be. Blending natural beauty with sophisticated yet traditional hospitality, cool high-tech cities and bucolic landscapes – it’s a wonder that more people don’t flock to Japan for their special trip.

But deciding where to spend your honeymoon in Japan is easier said than done – should you hone in on the big cities like Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka? Or go for something a little different? Explore with our ultimate Japan honeymoon guide.

Why Honeymoon in Japan

Japan

Sure, Japan is a rave-worthy destination no matter the occasion, but what makes it such a magical honeymooner’s delight? Let’s start with the obvious — the country’s immense natural beauty.

Throughout Japan lies an array of scenic majesty, from volcanic hot springs to lush and pristine forests; it’s a feast for the senses. Bamboo forests meet spectacular waterfalls and mountain temples, creating a tranquil setting for any honeymoon.

In contrast, Japan’s cities are some of the most eclectic in the world. Each has a unique and enticing allure that quickly sets the scene for distinct honeymoon adventures. From the busy streets of Tokyo with a fun-loving nightlife to the cultural heart of Kyoto.

Then you have cities such as Aichi, a tech junkie’s paradise. The marvelous city of Hyogo, where foodies find nirvana. Finally, beach lovers have stunners like Yokohama and Okinawa that meet their wildest dreams.

Best Honeymoon Hotels & Resorts in Japan

Villas feature private wooden balconies overlooking the forest, while interiors blend neutral and warm tones of white and brown. Each villa includes an authentic onsen bath, refilled daily with natural mineral water from a nearby spring.

The in-house restaurant prepares dishes fresh with the aim of delivering Japanese haute-cuisine. Multi-course dinners are the highlights of its menu, delivered directly to your villa upon request.

St. Regis (Osaka)

$$

Best for an urban honeymoon adventure

St. Regis Osaka

For a fantastic Japanese honeymoon destination, the city of Osaka and the St. Regis Hotel exceed expectations. Located in the high-end central part of the city, this property sits at the core of shopping, nightlife, and exploration.

Rooms at St. Regis are spacious, with contemporary and minimalist design stylings. Shades of brown and white are soft on the eye, while each suite features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the buzzing cityscape.

Fine dining is paramount at St. Regis, with two fantastic in-house options. La Veduta is a grill house inspired by northern Italian cuisine, while Rue d’Or is an airy bistro. And for a genuine Japanese touch, the outdoor zen garden offers blissful respite from the busy city.

Mandarin Oriental (Tokyo)

Best for a modern urban escape

Mandarin Oriental Tokyo

A premier Japan honeymoon destination, the Mandarin Oriental in Tokyo blends style, convenience, and affordable luxury. While eager honeymooners often overlook the Nihonbashi district, this is a genuine hidden gem.

While room interiors feature elegant decor splashed with wood, washi, and fabrics from Reiko Sudo. Each room includes a dedicated bonsai that comes with its biography.

Few honeymoon spots in Japan measure up in terms of cuisine, with the Mandarin boasting 12 in-house restaurants. In total, culinary spots here claim three Michelin stars.

Suiran (Kyoto)

Best for a tranquil riverside breakaway

Suiran

Suiran deserves all the acclaim it receives as one of the most romantic Japan getaway destinations. Sitting within the leafy Arashiyama district , surrounded by a bamboo forest along the banks of the Katsura River, it’s heaven on Earth.

An intimate property boasting 39 rooms, its allure lies in magnetic elements such as pebble pathways, Japanese pine trees, and several waterfalls. The interior is a quintessential ryokan with textured walls and cedar wood onsen baths. Contemporary touches include private zen gardens.

On-site dining happens at Kyo Suiran, a formal restaurant with a Japanese cuisine menu. While café Saryo Hassui sits on the riverbank, making it the perfect place for delicious sundowners.

Japan Honeymoon Tips: What You Need to Know

How to get to japan .

Himeji Castle Japan

Considering Japan’s world-class appeal, the country benefits from four main international airports. Narita and Haneda International are within Tokyo, Osaka boasts Kansai International, and Nagoya contains the Central Japan Airport.

Flights are readily available and come in a wide price range. Using Skyscanner makes getting the best prices and shortest flights easy.

Other popular travel methods for your Japan honeymoon itinerary include weekly ferries from mainland China and South Korea. Several cruise liners also offer routes to Japan, but these often take far longer than direct flights.

The Best Places to Visit in Japan

Japan is a captivating country with an ever-increasing number of things to do and, more importantly, fantastic places to go. For the ultimate honeymoon in Japan, these are a few places you shouldn’t skip.

Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

As the capital city of Japan, Tokyo is unsurprisingly one of the most popular places to visit in the country – and is one of the coolest urban honeymoon destinations in the world. Go for world-class shopping and stellar dining – and to explore the bountiful historic temples and shrines.  There’s plenty to keep you busy.

Mount Fuji, Japan

One of three sacred mountains in Japan, Mount Fuji is its most famous. It is still an active volcano but visiting this breathtaking giant is a must. Reaching a staggering 12,000 feet for your honeymoon, you can opt for a summit hike or, better yet, a day-trip guided tour .

Osaka, Japan

Want an alternative to Tokyo? Osaka is the perfect choice. This vibrant city is awash with delicious food and cultural heritage – add to that a lively nightlife scene and you’ve got a cool addition to your Japanese honeymoon.

Hokkaido

Bihoro Pass in Hokkaido, Japan

Hokkaido is no secret, but Japan’s northernmost island is the perfect antidote to the bustle of Japan’s urban metropolises.  Home to some of Japan’s most stunning scenery, including mountains, forests, lakes and hot springs, Hokkaido is a relaxing honeymoon escape from it all.

Kanonji, Kagawa prefecture, Japan

Quite literally a bridge away from Japan’s main island, Honshu, Shikoku showcases an air of a land forgotten by time. It’s one of the country’s least explored corners but comprises lush, dotted hills and many hidden temples (88 in total).

Yakushi-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nara Japan

An officially recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site , Nara’s quiet and calm demeanor rivals the cultural impact of much larger Osaka. It’s an intimate town fit for a truly romantic Japanese honeymoon, with free-roaming and friendly deer throughout. For a fantastic experience, book this day trip from Kyoto to Nara .

The Best Time to Visit Japan

Himeji, Japan

When planning the perfect honeymoon to Japan, timing is everything. While the country sees the best (and worst) of each season, some months are ideal for your getaway.

Late spring, from March to May, and late fall, from September to November, rank the best months to visit. Weather-wise you can expect little to no rainfall and very mild temperatures.

Spring sees the cherry-blossom festival, while fall welcomes epic sights as red tones overtake the country’s forests.

How Long to Spend on Your Japan Honeymoon

To make the most of a Japanese honeymoon, the ideal number of days to spend in the country is between 9 and 14.

One week runs the risk of causing missed highlights or a rushed feeling due to the many attractions.

How Much Does a Japan Honeymoon Cost?

Tokyo, Japan

Without sugar-coating anything, a honeymoon package in Japan can be expensive. How much your trip ultimately costs also depends on how long you plan to visit.

On average, for a couple on a 7 to 9-day trip, prices range from $3,000 to $4,000. This excludes airfare and can spike when booking luxury accommodation.

Of course, you can save on expenses such as accommodation and dining out. Prices also fluctuate between the high season (June and July) and the low season (November and December).

If you’re on a budget, Japan does offer plenty of affordable honeymoon ideas. A light budget on hotels and activities ranges between $1,200 and $2,000 for a 7-day trip.

When is the Best Time to Visit Japan?

Japan has four distinct seasons, and each region may have varying climates. For good weather, in general, the best time to visit Japan would be in late spring (March to May) and late autumn (September to November). During this period, there is little rainfall, clear skies, and mild temperatures. You will get to see beautiful cherry blossoms ( Hanami ) in spring and red maple leaves ( Koyo ) in autumn. But this period falls in the high season.  I suggest visiting Japan during the shoulder season of summer (June to September). You get good weather and cheaper prices.  The winter months of (December to February) are cold, but as it is the least-visited season for tourists, you get the lowest prices. There are plenty of winter activities in Japan for you to enjoy.

Getting Around Japan (get the JR Pass!)

Getting around Tokyo itself is really easy as the train network is well connected. One thing to note is that taxis in Japan is extremely expensive. I took a 15-minute ride in Tokyo from my hotel to the airport and it cost us over S$100! If you are in a group and for any reason, you need to travel by car, you can book a private charter to take you around Tokyo’s attractions and even bring you to Mount Fuji.   If you are planning to get out of Tokyo, getting around Japan itself is relatively easy and there are various options, like the shinkansen (bullet train), local train, public bus, plane, ferry. You can even rent a car, though I’d advise against doing so in the city for it is expensive and roads are tricky. But for places like Hokkaido or the countryside, a road-trip is definitely an option to consider.  The best way to get around Japan depends on how long your trip is. If you only have a week in Japan, getting around quickly is key and the bullet train is the quickest way. Be sure to get a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) and take the train everywhere you go. The JR Pass is a cost-effective rail pass for long-distance travel in Japan and is exclusive only to tourists because it is more economical and time-saving. It pays off once you take a round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto.

First time in Japan? Where should I visit?

If it is your first time visiting Japan, I would say Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka is the usual circuit most take. Most travellers head to West Japan where the Kansai and Chugoku regions are (Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, and Hiroshima). See Top things to do in West Japan . For your second visit to Japan, you can visit the Okinawa islands in South or go to Hokkaido and North Japan. North Japan has many off the beaten path experiences for you. Here is a great itinerary for second-timers by Tokyo Creative .

Q: How do I get to Japan from Singapore? Do I need a Visa?

Tokyo is the capital city and gateway to japan. There are two major airports Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Tokyo Haneda (HND).  Direct flights are available from Singapore to Okinawa, Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo and Hiroshima, Sapporo (Hokkaido).

Full-fledged airlines that fly direct to Japan include Singapore Airlines , Japan Airlines, Nippon Airways (ANA), British Airways and Delta. Budget airlines Jetstar and Scoot do fly to Japan, though do check if they have a transit stop. Singapore Citizens (holders of Singapore passport) who intend to stay in Japan as tourists for a period of up to 3 months do not need a visa. More Visa information here .

From Narita Airport, you can reach downtown Tokyo in 40+ minutes by Skyliner Train . Alternatively, you can take this airport limousine bus transfer with free wifi onboard . Check out this full guide by Klook on how to go to Tokyo from Haneda Airport or Narita International Airport.

Q: How much are flights to Japan? How to get cheaper flights?

Flight prices to Tokyo average at ~$500 – $600.  If you find flights at $300 – $400, that is a good deal and you can proceed to buy without waiting too long. Prices can quickly double during high season.

The cheapest month for tickets to Japan would be November. The high season in Japan in May and June, but if you book early enough you might be able to get good deals. Subscribe to price alert on Skyscanner  so you get notified when the price drops to your budget. Book at least 3 weeks before departure.

Q: How long is the flight from Singapore to Japan?

The flight duration from Singapore to Tokyo, Japan is about 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours. The flight duration to Okinawa is slightly shorter at 5 hours.

Q: How long should I visit Japan?

If you are planning to visit just Tokyo and Kyoto, cater at least 7 – 10 days for a comfortable pace. If you are planning to make a few stops, 2 weeks would be better and you can add in Osaka, Hiroshima, as well as day trips to Mt Fuji, Nara, Miyajima. That being said, Japan has so many places for you to explore that even a 3-weeks itinerary would be packed.

If it is your first time in Japan, I would suggest this 2-week itinerary:

  • Day 1 – 5: Tokyo (including a day trip to Mount Fuji)
  • Day 6 – 10: Kyoto
  • Day 10 – 12: Hiroshima (including a day trip to Miyajima)
  • Day 12 – 14: Osaka (including a day trip to Nara)
  • Day 15: Transit to Tokyo and fly back to Singapore

If you are planning on visiting Okinawa, it takes about 3 to 5 days to see the sights on one island, so depending on the number of islands you plan to visit, cater accordingly. You can travel between the islands by ferry or plane.

Q: Is Japan safe?

Japan is very safe for travellers. In fact, it is one of the safest countries in the world and is ranked the 9th safest country in the world . Though the crime rate in Japan is low, always travel with common sense, and look after your belongings as nowhere is immune from crime.

I was initially worried about traveling to Japan because of the fear of radiation (due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011), but after reading this , I did feel more assured to visit there, and the short answer is yes, it is safe.

Japan being on tectonic lines is at risk of earthquakes, but it should not deter you from visiting the country. Instead, be prepared for them. Read up on how to stay safe in case of an emergency .

I cannot emphasize how important it is to always get travel insurance for your trip. The insurance only costs you tens of dollars, but this keeps you safely covered. In the unlikely (but still possible) event you fall sick, get into an accident or have to deal with lost luggage, this insurance will be a lifesaver. I have been in that position before when I got injured in Vietnam, so I strongly encourage you to get at least a basic travel insurance plan before you leave. Our friends at Singsaver compared the best travel insurance policies here so you can choose the one that suits you best. It’s very easy to use!

Q: What to expect in Japan?

  • Language: The national language of Japan is Japanese. During my trip, I found that not many people in Japan speak English (if they do, it is usually the younger generation). Be prepared by having a language book or app with you to allow you to communicate and ask for directions. Also, many signs are in Japanese, so use the Google Translate app to help you know what is said.
  • Currency: The official currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). At this point of writing (Oct 2019), 1 SGD = 79.56 JPY.
  • Credit Cards & ATMs: There is little problem in using your credit card when in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka. It is advised to carry cash for entrance fees to tourist attractions, and also if you are planning to explore out of the city. ATMs are commonly found in cities.
  • Plugs: The plugs in Japan are different from Singapore. They type A and B, whereas Singapore is type G. The standard voltage and frequency are the same at 100 V and 50 / 60 Hz. Do remember to bring a universal adapter (with surge protection) with you.

Q: Tell me more about Japan!

japan trip for honeymoon

Located along East Asia’s Pacific coast, Japan is an island country that is located on the edge of several tectonic plates. Its landscape comprises of islands, mountains, valleys, active volcanoes, and tectonic landscapes. You will find calderas, fuketsu (cave) and geothermal areas where there are hot springs. Japan’s terrain is mostly mountainous (70%) and forested.

The 5 main islands of Japan are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, and Okinawa. Japan has over 6,000 remote islands. Japan being an archipelago has the sixth-longest coastline. Many people reside in the coastal areas, and its sandy beaches and coral reefs are home to many species of birds and fishes.

Early Japanese culture was heavily influenced by China. Today, Japan has Western influences evident in many aspects including art, lifestyle, and food. Shinto and Buddhism are the two main religions in Japan.

The national language is Japanese, which is primarily spoken around the country. Japan is pronounced as “Nippon” or “Nihon” in Japanese. Old Japanese (“Kanbun”) originated from China, and the earliest Japanese text (“Kojiki”) was written in the 8th Century- this is why you will notice familiar Chinese characters on signboards. English is not very widely spoken in Japan, so you may face some difficulties getting directions. Try to have a translate app or a language handbook with you to help you communicate.

Japanese are primarily fish eaters and Japan is the number one fish importer in the world. The Japanese diet commonly includes rice, fresh seafood, and pickled vegetables. Their healthy diet is believed to correlate to their longevity. You will remember Japan for sushi, ramen, tempura & more.

Though Japan is heavily urbanized, there is so much nature in Japan. Famous for its cherry blossoms , you will see gorgeous sakura flowers blossom all over the island over the year. Japan has many national parks and marshlands for you to trek, gorges to hike, waterfalls to see, caves to explore, beaches to swim, and mountains for scenic views. It is absolutely stunning.

Best things to do on a honeymoon in Japan

There’s so much to see in Japan, from classic destinations to hidden gens. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at a first glance, but don’t worry, I got your back. Below, you’ll find a curated list of best experiences for your honeymoon in Japan. While some are essential highlights for any traveler visiting Japan, others are romantic and tailored to honeymooners.

1) Lakeshore picnic with Mount Fuji views

I know Mount Fuji may sound like a commonplace, but some clichés are clichés for a reason and believe me when I say this is one of them. The sacred mountain of Japan has an ethereal aura that’s hard to describe and is a must-visit destination in Japan for honeymooners. It certainly gets crowded, but there are ways to savor a more intimate and relaxed experience, as you can see in this post . Our impromptu picnic by the tranquil shores of Lake Kawaguchiko remains a cherished memory from our Japan journey, and it’s an experience I wholeheartedly recommend sharing with the love of your life.

Honeymoon in Japan

While it’s feasible to visit Fujikawaguchiko as a day trip from Tokyo, I’d recommend staying for at least a night to make the most of the destination. Book a hotel with private onsens and Mount Fuji views. Kaneyamaen and Mizno Hotel are honeymoon worthy hotels, but you can find other great options here!

2) Celebrate Hanami during cherry blossom season

Before delving into the specifics of the best seasons to visit Japan, I want to share a crucial piece of advice upfront. If possible, try o time your honeymoon in Japan with cherry blossom season . Despite being a busy period, it offers an unparalleled romantic experience and is the best time to visit Japan as a couple. As Sakura blossom paint the country in hues of pink, Japan comes alive with vibrant spring festivals and the most beautiful landscapes. It’s a bucket list experience to enjoy loved one!

Honeymoon in Japan

Cherry blossom season isn’t just about romance, tough. It’s also a profoundly cultural and symbolic time in Japan. A season to honor the fleeting nature of life and the importance enjoying the here and now. That’s the essence of hanami , a Japanese tradition that brings couples, families and friends under cherry trees in full bloom to picnic and have a great time. The sounds of laughter were infections and I’m convinced this is the happiest time to visit Japan. We absolutely loved exploring Japan during Sakura season and I’m sure you’ll love it too!

3) Relax at an ryokan onsen

If you’re a lover of wellness experiences like us, you’re in for a treat. Japan is home to more than 25,000 hot spring sources and there’s a whole culture around them. If the concept of “onsen” is new to you, allow me to explain – onsens are bathing facilities where you can soak in geothermally heated water and absorb their healing and purifying properties. Although the experience resembles going to a spa, there’s more to it. Usually, there’s a bathing protocol to follow and guests are separated by gender, since onsens are to be enjoyed naked. Most establishments don’t allow visitors with tattoos, and this is one of the reasons I recommend booking a ryokan with private onsens to enjoy as a honeymooner couple. Some great options are the wonderful Takaragawa Onsen Ousenkaku in Lake Kawaguchico or Aman in Kyoto !

4) Feast in traditional food and drinks

I may be biased because Japanese cuisine is my favorite, but I must admit that in Japan I had the most unforgettable meals of my life. Japan’s culinary scene is renowned for its refinement and diversity, and I’m not the only one who considers the country a true foodie’s paradise. If you and your partner enjoy exploring new flavors and having unique dining experiences, Japan will be a playground for you!

Honeymoon in Japan best experiences

From steaming bowls of ramen to meticulously crafted sushi and an array of traditional delicacies, Japan offers a culinary adventure like no other. During your honeymoon, aim to strike a balance between dining at Michelin-starred restaurants and discovering hidden “hole-in-the-wall” gems. This will provide you with a multifaceted insight into Japan’s culinary craftsmanship and expand your palate. And don’t miss the opportunity to sample local sakes and Umeshu, a delightful plum wine that ranks high on my list of favorite beverages!

5) Spend a night at a Shukubo

Shukubo translates directly to “sleeping with the monks” and refers to an accommodation experience within a buddhist temple. These accommodations not only provide a place to stay but also offer a range of enriching experiences such as meditation classes, morning prayers with monks, and traditional Buddhist meals. They are known as Shojin Ryori and consist of meticulously prepared dishes following the principles of compassion and harmony with nature.

Honeymoon in Japan best experiences

We had the privilege of spending a night at a Shukubo in Mount Koya, renowned as the most spiritual place in Japan. The experience was truly remarkable, and I definitely recommend including a visit to Koyasan to your honeymoon in Japan plans. In case you’re wondering, the rooms are quite comfortable, typically following the traditional ryokan style. Staying at a shukubo like Koyasan Syukubo Ekoin Temple is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a memory you’ll never forget. Read our complete guide to Koyasan here!

6) Take part in festivals and events

Japan boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage, vividly displayed through its numerous festivals and events held throughout the year . Among the most captivating are Omizutori in Nara , Sanja Matsuri in Asakusa Tokyo, and Aio Matsuri in Kyoto. If you’re interested in cultural experiences, I highly recommend consulting the calendar when planning your honeymoon in Japan to ensure you can partake in as many of these celebrations as possible!

japan trip for honeymoon

We attended to an original Sumo competition in Osaka , and it was one of the most fascinating experiences we’ve ever had. Surrounded by locals in a bustling arena, we witnessed Sumo wrestlers engage in matches steeped in millennia-old traditions—it was truly epic, and we felt fortunate to have secured tickets. Additionally, in Kyoto, we were treated to a mesmerizing Miyako Odori performance, showcasing traditional dances by geisha and maikos at Kamishichiken Kabukai. It was a simply fantastic experience, and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I noticed real-life geishas watching the spectacle right beside us. Such a genuine and recommended performance!

7) Do a Sake tasting

Sake, a beverage made from fermented rice, is one of the most celebrated drinks from Japan. It’s rooted in millenary traditions and come in different flavors and carbonation levels. Since each region in Japan boasts its own ways of making sake, I recommend trying different labels as you explore the country. This quintessential Japanese drink perfectly complements most traditional dishes, enhancing your culinary experiences. You’ll find them everywhere!

If you’re interested in the fermented drinks in general, consider joining a sake brewery tour. You’ll delve into the intricate process of sake production and savor a sampling of various sake varieties at the conclusion of the tour. Explore some of the most renowned sake breweries here and indulge in this enriching activity that seamlessly blends drinks with cultural traditions and is ideal for couples seeking a unique and immersive experience.

8) Shop for your new home

Even if you’ve been living together for some time, returning from your honeymoon will bring a sense of fresh start. While exploring Japan on your honeymoon, take advantage of the opportunity to acquire unique pieces to embellish your home. Having items that reflect Japanese craftsmanship at home will serve as delightful reminders of your honeymoon days.

japan trip for honeymoon

Some pieces I’d recommend buying in Japan are:

  • Handmade knives and ceramics, which are considered the best in the world
  • Sweets and matcha powder
  • Original handmade decorations such as Maneki Neko, geishas or buddhist figures
  • Personalized Hashi sticks to use at special order-in sushi nights
  • Sake, Japanese Whiskey and Umeshu (plum wine) to sip at home while reminiscing about your honeymoon in Japan
  • High quality incenses

9) Swim in crystal clear waters

Did you know Japan is home to sandy, crystal-clear blue beaches, similar to other classic honeymoon destinations such as Maldives and French Polynesia? I was really surprised to discover the paradisiacal Okinawa islands last year. Boasting luxury romantic hotels and stunning beaches, this may be a great addition to your itinerary in Japan. It’ll bring a more tropical and relaxed feel to your honeymoon!

With a short domestic flight you can leave behind the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and reach Okinawa. The archipelago is comprised of over 160 small and pristine islands and the most beautiful of them are Ishigaki, Taketomi, Tokashiki, Miyako and Zamami. However, all of them unveil unique charm and offer endless opportunities for romance and adventure. Check this dreamy hotel if you’re not fully convinced!

10) Visit temples and gardens

Japan is home to countless temples and shrines. They come in different shapes and forms and are basically everywhere. Some are small and others gigantic, like Senso Ji in Tokyo. Some are rustic and others are the epitome of refinement and luxury, such as of Kinkaku-ji in Kyoto. But all of them boast the same serene and ethereal atmosphere that makes everyone fall in love with Japan’s heritage.

cherry blossoms spots in Tokyo

Experience the tranquility of zen not only within temples but also in traditional Japanese gardens, where timeless beauty and the essence of Japanese aesthetics converge. Among the most stunning gardens in Japan are three that epitomize the six sublime qualities of a perfect garden. We visited Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa and were enchanted by its serene ambiance and exquisite scenery. It’s an absolute must-visit for couples seeking a romantic and immersive experience in Japan.

11) Make the most of Japan’s nature

Make the most of Japan’s stunning and diverse natural landscapes during your honeymoon. If you’re an active couple consider hiking to the summit of Mount Fuji or exploring the picturesque trails of the Mount Yari region, offering breathtaking alpine views. Also check the stunning Nachi Falls and the bamboo groves of Arashiyama. Whether you’re drawn to towering mountains, serene beaches, or enchanting bamboo forests, Japan offers a plethora of natural wonders waiting to be discovered.

Honeymoon in Japan: a practical travel guide

Now let’s talk about practical aspects. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive travel guide for honeymooning in Japan, filled with useful and updated information on the destination. Click on the plus sign to read the info.

Japan is an all-year-round destination. While spring and fall are especially attractive seasons, the truth is every season offers a unique perspective of the country. Let’s get into details about each one of them:

Spring (Mar-May): If you’re looking for the epitome of romance, chose spring. The country bursts into life with flowers and festivals and become the most perfect backdrop for a honeymoon trip. While this is undoubtedly the busiest time, with soaring demand for accommodation, the magical ambiance and mild temperatures make of it the best time for your honeymoon in Japan. Please check cherry blossom dates here and make sure to time your trip with full bloom dates around the country. It’s an experience you won’t ever forget!

Summer (Jun-Aug): Despite occasional rain and cloud cover, Japan’s summer boasts vibrant festivals and celebrations. From the iconic Gion Matsuri in Kyoto to dazzling fireworks displays across the country, there’s no shortage of excitement during this season. Embrace the warmth by exploring picturesque islands or embarking on invigorating hikes in the mountainous regions. This is the season you can climb Mount Fuji!

Autumn (Sep-Nov): As summer fades into autumn, Japan transforms into a captivating tapestry of fiery hues, with maple trees boasting beautiful shades of red and orange. With lower prices and vibrant colors, autumn presents an enchanting alternative to the bustling spring season for honeymooners seeking romance and tranquility.

Winter (Dec-Feb): Winter is the least popular season to visit Japan, but it’s still extremelly captivating, Picture snow-covered landscapes and cozy onsens creating a romantic atmosphere for a honeymoon. Explore iconic sites like Jigokudani Valley, where snow monkeys bathe in thermal springs, or hit the slopes in renowned winter sports destinations such as Hokkaido and Niseko. Whether seeking adrenaline-fueled moment on the slopes or peaceful moments amidst nature’s wonders, Japan’s winter offers a romantic backdrop for unforgettable honeymoon experiences.

The smartest way to get around Japan is by using their super-efficient and punctual rail system. The renowned Shinkansen, or bullet trains, seamlessly link Japan’s major urban centers, offering unparalleled convenience and speed. To unlock unlimited train travel and explore the country with ease, consider investing in a Japan Rail Pass , exclusively available to foreign tourists for sightseeing purposes. Even if it’s more expensive than buying individual tickets, take into consideration the fact that you can be as spontaneous as you wish and won’t have the hurdle of standing in line etc.

While the Japan Rail Pass doesn’t cover every bullet train or metro route, it may be a cost-effective option for couples embarking on extensive journeys across the country. Opt for either the 7, 14, or 21 consecutive days option according to your itinerary. Keep in mind that while Green cars offer upgraded comfort, seats must be reserved in advance, making Ordinary cars a quicker and more flexible choice for spontaneous travelers.

For seamless luggage management, utilize the convenient Takuhaibin servic e, allowing your accommodations to transport your belongings to your next destination hassle-free. When navigating city metros, streamline your experience with a Pasmo or Suica card, ensuring effortless access while exploring urban landscapes. Be mindful of peak hours to avoid crowded trains and maximize your comfort during your Japan honeymoon adventure.

There are direct routes to Japan starting from major cities across Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and the Middle East. Tokyo serves as the primary gateway, boasting two major airports for international arrivals. Narita Airport (NRT) welcomes the majority of international flights, while Haneda Airport (HND) offers a closer proximity to the city center. Over the past years, new direct routes to Osaka’s Kansai International Airport (KIX) have popped up, so make sure to check it out.

We flew business to Japan with LOT Airlines and were really surprised with the level of service and comfort. Flying with the airline through Krakow is definitely a route I’d recommend if you’re traveling from Europe in business class!

Japan has always been considered an expensive country to visit. But while it may not be cheap Asian destination such as Vietnam, it’s actually not as expensive as many would imagine. Coming from Scandinavia, we thought Japan prices were pretty reasonable, similar to most destinations in Europe and a bit cheaper than countries like Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Here’s an overview of how much we spent in Japan:

Accommodation: Tokyo and Kyoto are the most expensive cities when it comes to accommodation. Expect to pay at least €250 per night in cozy boutique hotels and up to €400 on honeymoon worthy hotels. Other cities like Osaka, Okayama, and Kanazawa offer more affordable rates, around €150 per night. In total, we spent about 3.2k Euros for 19 days of travel for a couple, staying in charming hotels. Practically cheaper than traveling through Europe!

Food and drinks: It will depend entirely on the type of restaurant you choose, but on average, we spent 50 Euros for more elaborate and generous meals and about 30 Euros for practical meals for 2 people with drinks. I found it at least 30% cheaper than prices in Europe.

Transportation: We bought the 14-day Japan Rail Pass for 350 Euros per person and used it for all our travels. That was last year, and since then prices have been risen in over 50%. Please check prices and book your JR Pass here!

Attraction tickets: I found most entrance fees reasonably priced. Excluding the Sumo championship and the geisha performance, we spent about 150 Euros to visit all the tip attractions during the trip.

Shopping: I confess that I found shopping in Japan expensive, and I live in Sweden, one of the most expensive countries in Europe. I bought some souvenirs, but nothing too extravagant. Research before buying, but keep in mind that bargaining is not a thing in Japan.

Add the flight costs and potential the visa fees, and you’ll have an idea of how much it costs to honeymoon in Japan!

I consider Japan one of the best honeymoon destinations in the world. From the tranquil serenity of its ancient temples to the vibrant energy of its bustling cities, Japan offers a perfect blend of tradition and modernity that will captivate the hearts of curious honeymooners. Whether you’re indulging in a serene lakeside picnic with views of Mount Fuji , immersing yourself in the beauty of cherry blossom season , or savoring the exquisite flavors of its world-renowned cuisine, every moment spent in Japan is a celebration of love and adventure. 14-Day Honeymoon Itinerary in Japan

Lake with sakura and boats in pink light

Did you know that Japan is an amazing honeymoon destination ? Japan offers everything you could ever dream of for that perfect post-wedding trip, and with an abundance of unique culture , fascinating history, spectacular natural scenery , outstanding hospitality, superb gastronomy and fun activities , Japan has something for everyone. In fact, there are way too many awesome things to see and experience to fit them all into one trip, so where should you begin when planning your honeymoon trip to Japan? Let us help you get started with this 14-day itinerary which has it all: culture, nature , highlights and the most efficient route to make the most of your time!

Accommodation and Bed Sizes

Where to stay in tokyo, day 3: day trip to hakone from tokyo, where to stay in magome or tsumago, where to stay in kyoto, day 8: day trip to nara from kyoto, where to stay in naoshima, where to stay in hiroshima, where to stay in osaka, day 14: departure from kansai international airport, japan wonder travel tours , other articles you might be interested in, how to get around japan.

Shinkansen and Fuji

The easiest and most economical way to travel between most of the places on this honeymoon itinerary is by train. In Japan, riding the bullet train ( shinkansen ) is fast, comfortable and ensures a hassle-free experience. Usually, traveling by high-speed rail is expensive, but foreign tourists visiting Japan have the option to buy an all-you-can-ride Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) at a very reasonable price.

Upon arrival in Japan, you can activate the pre-purchased pass and make reservations for all your long-distance rides at JR ticket offices at the airport or any major JR station throughout the country. It’s handy to write down your schedule beforehand, including the dates and times you’d like to travel, to make the reservation process a breeze. Some shorter rides on JR buses or trains within cities can also be done using the JR Pass, but for these, you don’t have to (and can’t) make reservations. For train and bus timetables it is easiest to check Google Maps which has most public transport in Japan at hand. It is also recommended to check Google Maps for the current opening hours of all of the sightseeing spots you are planning on visiting.

Hotel bed

Another piece of advice before we proceed with the details of the itinerary is about bed sizes in Japan. When you book your accommodation it’s a good idea to double-check the details of bed sizes and configurations. Many hotels in Japan, especially the more budget-friendly ones, have small double beds as a standard, usually 140 or even just 120 cm in width. While you’ll probably want to be cozy with your significant other during your honeymoon, these standard Japanese beds may seem a tad too small for many international tourists. Go for queen (160 cm) or king-sized (180 cm) beds for more comfort or opt for twin beds if you prefer.

Day 1 and 2: Tokyo

Tokyo Tower by night

Congratulations on your recent wedding, and welcome to Japan! You will arrive at either Narita International Airport or Haneda International Airport , both well-connected to central Tokyo . Depending on your arrival time, you may have the afternoon or evening to spend in Tokyo. As it’s your first day here and you may be a bit tired or jet lagged from the trip, how about a peaceful visit to a beautiful Japanese garden? It’s a great way to ease into your Japan adventure and to get acquainted with the quieter side of Tokyo. The Hamarikyu Gardens or Shinjuku Gyoen are excellent choices, but there are also a few other gardens that are definitely worth a visit. Choose the garden that is closest to your hotel to make the most of your time and enjoy yourself while you acclimatize to the city. If you still have energy in the evening, why not visit the centrally located Tokyo Tower and admire this iconic symbol of Tokyo beautifully lit up at night? You can also go up the tower if you like, and afterward, you can have dinner in the nearby Daimon area which has plenty of low-key Japanese restaurants where you can walk in without a reservation.

Let’s enjoy day 2 to the fullest! If you want to see all the best sites that Tokyo has to offer in a short period of time, booking a private highlight tour is a great idea. If you prefer to discover the city by yourself, the following areas are not to be missed: Shibuya and nearby Harajuku to experience Japan’s youth culture up close, the famous Meiji Shrine and the traditional area of Asakusa . Visiting these four spots will definitely make for a full day’s explorations.

As this is your honeymoon, tonight might be the perfect evening to splurge on dinner in a Michelin-starred restaurant for that special feeling of luxury. Tokyo is known as the city with the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world, so there is plenty to choose from . It’s recommended to make your reservation well before arriving in Japan as some places book out weeks or even months in advance. If you’re staying at a 4- or 5-star hotel, the hotel concierge will be more than happy to assist you with this.

The Royal Park Hotel Tokyo Shiodome

Imperial Hotel Tokyo

Hakone Lake Ashi with ship and torii gate

Today you’re going on a day trip to Hakone , a volcanically active area with an amazing view of Mt. Fuji on clear days. But even if you’re out of luck and the iconic mountain isn’t visible, there are plenty of other impressive sights to enjoy in this area which is located a 2 hours’ train ride west of Tokyo. Owakudani with its billowing volcanic gas, vast Lake Ashi inviting you to take a scenic boat ride and the Hakone Checkpoint with its interesting history are all places that shouldn’t be missed. And how about a nice, relaxing soak in a hot spring at one of the many onsen hotels before heading back to Tokyo? You can also combine your onsen bath with dinner afterwards, and then head straight back to your hotel in Tokyo for a restful night of sleep.

Day 4: From Tokyo to Magome and Tsumago

Magome sunrise

On day 4 you will wake up in time to catch the 9 am train towards Magome, a picturesque mountain village on the famous Nakasendo road where you will arrive a bit after noon. Tucked away in the lush Kiso Valley, here you’ll get to enjoy nature and traditional Japanese architecture as you hike the trail between the villages of Magome and Tsumago. The Edo era townscapes are well-preserved in these two former post towns that used to serve as rest stops on one of the old roads connecting Edo (now Tokyo) with Kyoto. Immerse yourself in history and learn more about how Japanese people used to live back in the day. That’s also why we recommend staying overnight here so you can take it easy and spend the next morning walking around the village, feeling like you’ve stepped back in time.

Guest House Motomiya

Day 5, 6 and 7: Kyoto

Kyoto Higashiyama

After checking out of your accommodation on day 5 you will head to Kyoto, Japan’s former capital and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The journey takes around 2.5 hours, so why don’t you buy a colorful bento lunch box to enjoy on the way? If you arrive in Kyoto before 3 pm, you’ll still have time to visit one or two of the city’s many highlights before most of them close for the day. The Kiyomizu Dera is especially attractive at the end of the day and has a romantic terrace providing a wonderful view of the city. Once evening descends on Kyoto, the Pontocho area lights up its many lanterns. We recommend choosing one of the small local restaurants here for a low-key, heartfelt atmosphere.

Day 6 and 7 are reserved for sightseeing in Kyoto as there are so many stunning places to see that even two full days will feel too short. All of these sites offer great photo ops for your honeymoon photo album, moments that you will cherish and want to revisit for decades. Here is a list of spots that you should definitely add to your list:

  • Fushimi Inari Taisha : thousands of red torii gates line the winding road to this famous hill-top shrine. It’s open 24/7, so for the best pictures we recommend to go early in the morning or late in the evening
  • Kinkakuji (Golden Temple) : this shimmering golden temple is truly breathtaking, especially on clear days when you can see its reflection in the lake
  • Arashiyama : you can easily spend half a day in this corner of suburban Kyoto, famous for its bamboo forest. Make sure to stop by nearby Okusaga, the atmospheric backstreets of the Sagano area. It’s especially recommended to get around here by bicycle
  • Ginkakuji (Silver Temple) : Ginkakuji is where an art-loving shogun had his retirement villa. The garden of this relatively quiet temple has a very nice, relaxing vibe
  • Philosopher’s Path : take a romantic stroll on this waterside path lined by cherry trees that are at their most impressive during the cherry blossom season in spring. The autumn foliage period is equally gorgeous in Kyoto
  • Gion : if you’re hoping to spot a maiko or geiko ( geisha ) on her way to work, strolling around Gion is your best bet. This is an area with many popular tea houses where geisha are working every evening

*Recommended Japanese Experiences!

Don’t bet on your luck and get a full Geisha and Maiko performance with a walking tour in Gion accompanied by a professional guide!

Today you will go on a day trip to Nara , the ancient city known as Japan’s first capital before it moved to Kyoto. Most of Nara’s famous attractions are centered around Nara Park where you will also find the Todaiji temple with its impressive Daibutsu Buddha statue and the Kasuga Taisha shrine with its many famous lanterns. The large park is also teeming with cute deer that are very friendly with humans and aren’t scared to come close to you. You can buy special deer senbei crackers to feed them, and if you’re lucky you will meet one who knows proper manners and will bow to you before getting a cracker! Naramachi is also a nice area to walk around as there are many well-preserved wooden merchant houses giving the district a distinctly traditional atmosphere. If you have enough time you can also stop by the lovely Isui-en garden, a beautifully made landscape garden that has been around since the 17th century and provides a great backdrop for a romantic stroll.

Want to make sure you’ll see it all and also get all the interesting historical facts and anecdotes that go with the sites? In that case, we recommend booking a full-day private tour in Nara .

Day 9: Naoshima

Naoshima red pumpkin

Today you will take the train to Uno via Okayama and Chayamachi. From Uno, you will board the ferry to Naoshima island . The whole journey takes a bit more than 2.5 hours, so plan accordingly – it’s better to leave early in the day. Naoshima is known as Japan’s art island, and visiting this special place with wonderful modern art set on a scenic island will surely become one of your fondest Japan memories. Enjoy art outdoors as well as indoors in world-famous museums like Benesse House, the Ando Museum, the Lee Ufan Museum and the Chichu Art Museum. In summer, you can swim on Gotanji beach in the south, and if you’re in the mood for a relaxing bathhouse experience in the evening, make sure to stop by Naoshima Bath.

Day 10, 11 and 12: Naoshima to Hiroshima via Okayama, and Day Trip to Miyajima

Miyajima floating torii

After checking out of your accommodation on day 10, board the ferry to Takamatsu or Uno and then take the train to Okayama . We recommend making a few hour stop to check out the nearby Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area , a scenic historic district with well-preserved Edo era warehouses that is especially famous for its many canals. Also known as ‘the Venice of Japan’, you can take a delightful gondola ride on Kurashiki’s waterways which is very fitting for a romantic honeymoon. In the afternoon, it’s time to head to Hiroshima where you will arrive just in time for dinner.

The next day you will head to Miyajima on a day trip, a sacred island south of Hiroshima city known for its seaside ‘floating’ torii gate. A hike up Mt. Misen is very much worth it as you can enjoy a gorgeous view of Hiroshima’s bay area from the summit.

You will have another full day to visit all the must-see sites in Hiroshima, including a visit to the Peace Memorial Park and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. And don’t forget to try Hiroshima’s take on okonomiyaki, a dish that was popularized in this area after the war. A great place to savor this local favorite is Okonomi-mura, a whole building floor dedicated to the savory dish.

Would you like to see Hiroshima and/or Miyajima with a private guide? Then we recommend booking this 7-hour customizable private tour where you will get to decide on the itinerary together with your local guide.

Day 13: Hiroshima to Osaka via Onomichi

Dotonbori by night

On day 13 you will leave Hiroshima and make a stop in Onomichi on your way towards Osaka. This beautiful seaside town with gentle slopes is located on the famous Shimanami Kaido scenic road. If you like cycling, we recommend renting a bicycle for the day and riding around Onomichi which has served as backdrop for several movies because of its idyllic, traditional atmosphere with winding roads. After enjoying the nostalgic townscapes, it’s time to head to Osaka for a hearty dinner. When hearing the word “Osaka”, its delicious local cuisine is what comes to mind for most Japanese people. Dotonbori is one of Osaka’s most lively nightlife districts and is also the best place to try a wide range of typical Osakan foods such as takoyaki and kushikatsu. Make sure to come hungry!

Posted on Published: December 30, 2023

With mesmerizing beauty, impressive and intriguing history, fascinating culture, Japan promises the perfect mix to offer newlyweds the special honeymoon of their dreams.

Whether you are romantic or adventurous, passionate about history, art, and architecture, or curious foodies, Japan is waiting for you with a multitude of surprises. If you are planning your amorous escape, continue reading and find out our best tips for a memorable honeymoon in spectacular Japan.

Best Time to Visit  Japan

Japan is a vast country that gives you the chance to experience subtropical lands and frigid winters, depending on when and where you go.

japan trip for honeymoon

If, for instance, skiing is not your cup of tea, you should consider traveling to Japan, from March to May and from September to November. Depending on your choice, you will be able to admire the iconic carry blossoms or the beautiful autumnal leaves. In many of the major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, the cherry blossom season typically takes place in early April.

Summer in Japan, from June to mid-September, depending on the location, offers locals and visitors warm and humid weather, as well as the chance to explore nature. Winter is also a great season to visit Japan, but only for adventurous who’re eager to hit the slopes. For those, the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido is the best destination, but areas close to Tokyo, like Shinkansen, are also good skiing spots.

Must-See Places During Your Japan Honeymoon

If you are a fan of big, bustling cities, like London and New York, and you are ready to give up the tranquil idea of romance to experience the craziness of a big city, Tokyo should be on your must-see list when visiting Japan.

Get lost in the big city, wander around its fascinating streets, and visit its fantastic landmarks, like the iconic Tokyo Skytree, the Sensoji temple, and the Harajuku Takeshita Street, a great spot for experiencing the crazy Japanese fashion. If you love Disney, you can spend some memorable moments at Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea. Also, if you and your loved one are foodies, Tokyo promises you the best culinary experiences. Make sure you indulge in some mouthwatering Edomae-sushi, made from fresh fish caught in the Tokyo Bay.

In case Tokyo sounds too big and busy for you, celebrate your love in a beautiful mountain forest region, where you can get closer to Japan’s sensational culture, while also exploring its gorgeous nature. Hakone is a great Japanese destination for all nature lovers who want to have a more relaxing honeymoon. Located near well-known Mount Fuji, approximately one and a half hours by train from Tokyo, Hakone welcomes honeymooners and other travelers with a sensational view of Mount Fuji, incredible spring resorts, and interesting shrines, like the lovely Shinto shrine, which can be visited by boat.

To get closer to the past of Japan, visiting its old capital Kyoto, is a fantastic idea. The romantic, small-town welcomes its visitors with an amazing mix of modern beauty and ancient vibes. Admire its temples, shrines, and imperial palaces, relax in its gardens and climb the mountains to admire the breathtaking sunrises, indulge in delicious ramen, and explore the city by bike.

If you have western Japan on your bucket list, begin the adventure in Osaka, its gorgeous capital, and one of the most popular destinations for all kinds of travelers. Bustling Osaka is filled with stunning attractions, but the city itself can instantly fascinate you with its vibrant cityscape and neon lights at night.

And the city has the power to satisfy all tastes. If you are a foodie, you will fall in love with the delicious local cuisine. Osaka’s local food is, without a doubt, a top attraction, and it includes octopus balls, squid pancakes, and many other delicacies. Shop on Osaka’s astonishing shopping streets, and have some fun at the Universal Studios Japan, the most visited theme park in the country. End your romantic escape in Osaka with a ride in the Tempozan Ferris Wheel.

And, to have a complete tour of Japan’s best areas, add Hiroshima to your must-visit list. Although considering its past, Hiroshima might not spring to mind when you plan your Japan honeymoon, the truth is that, regardless of its dark past, Hiroshima is a friendly and picturesque city, as well as a paradise for foodies. You can visit the city on a day trip, or spend a few days and take the time to indulge in its thriving food scene, explore its historic sites and charming galleries, as well as catch a glimpse of Japan’s wild nightlife.

Japanese women in traditional kimonos

Honeymoons in Japan

By Audley Japan specialist Layla

I’m yet to meet anyone who has journeyed to Japan and not fallen in love with it. The country appears to have a magical draw that leaves a lasting impression on its visitors.

For honeymoon couples , Japan provides a cultural adventure. If you would like to spend the whole of your post-wedding getaway relaxing on white sand then Japan isn’t for you (although it’s home to some fantastic beaches).

What it does offer is deeply rooted history and traditions — where else could you learn the arts of the tea ceremony, kimono wearing and samurai sword fighting? Juxtapose this with ultra-modern cities, dramatic mountain scenery and culinary experiences to rival anywhere in the world, and you have Japan.

Japan makes a great honeymoon destination if you have one week or two. Nine days is enough to explore Tokyo and Kyoto , while in a two-week trip you can extend your journey to cover more of the country .

Memorable honeymoon experiences in Japan

Stay in a traditional ryokan.

Private onsen (hot spring bath) within a ryokan

The concept behind the ryokan , a Japanese inn, is a very simple one — it’s a home from home, Japanese style — but it can also be a wonderful eye-opener to the authentic delights of the Japanese way of life. Most ryokans are small and family-run, and many provide the intimate stay that honeymoon couples so often seek.

The personal service you receive in a ryokan is impeccable. As part of your stay, your evening meal is included, usually served in the privacy of your room. Food is normally kaiseki style  (a banquet of little dishes), locally sourced, beautifully presented and often based on the seasons. Dishes include homemade pickles, vegetable tempura, rice, miso soup, as well as raw and cooked fish dishes, and meat you cook yourself at the table on a small hot stone barbecue.

Some ryokans also have private onsens, hot spring baths. Immersing oneself in the warm water is a popular Japanese pastime. Normally bathing is communal, and men and women will be separated as it’s customary to enter nude. However, in some ryokan, you can enjoy the exclusivity of your own private onsen attached to your room.

Kaiseki style evening meal

Each ryokan has its own individual characteristics and they range from simple, authentic stays which may have changed little in the last 200 years to more modern properties with luxurious furnishings and facilities. Your specialist can help you pick one that best suits your preferences.

Take part in a traditional pastime

A Japanese tea ceremony, making green tea

Kyoto , two and a half hours south of Tokyo is considered the cultural heart of Japan thanks to its collection of temples, shrines, gardens and traditional wooden architecture. Here you can take part in a Japanese pastime with a group of local ladies who are experts in anything from calligraphy and tea ceremonies, to introductions to kimono wearing and cooking lessons.

I took part in a private tea ceremony while in Kyoto. Despite having lived in Japan for six years, I had no idea about the history of this practice, or why it’s become so ingrained in Japanese society.

I arrived at a machiya, a traditional wooden townhouse , to be met by my kimono-wearing teacher and tea expert. She explained the history of the ceremony before demonstrating the tea making process. I had a taste before attempting to replicate the process myself, under the watchful eye of my teacher. Most tea in Japan is green and in its rawest form, so tastes quite bitter. It’s also frothy as you whisk it during the tea making ceremony.

Alternatively, you could take part in a kembu experience to learn about samurai culture, which includes a lesson on sword technique.

Discover Japan’s captivating capital city

The bright lights of Tokyo

Tokyo is a highlight in itself and it’s worth giving yourself enough time to explore its many faces. The city is easily explored under your own steam by navigating the metro system or simply strolling around on foot.

The Shinjuku district typifies the side of Tokyo that many visitors picture. It’s a buzzing metropolis with neon signs, people on the go and an exciting atmosphere. Elsewhere, the Harajuku district is where you’ll see Japan’s young and hip showcasing their wacky fashion sense, a far cry from Japanese tradition.

The New York Bar in the Park Hyatt hotel is a great place to enjoy a cocktail and take in the bright lights of Tokyo at night. You may recognise the bar from the film Lost in Translation . It’s one of my perennial haunts in the city for pre-dinner drinks.

Tokyo is a city of contrasts, and among the towering skyscrapers you’ll find little pockets of calm, where well-preserved temples and shrines offer a moment of contemplation away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Meiji Shrine, with its wooden columns and copper roofs, and the brighter red and gold Senso-ji Temple are two such places.

Tokyo is not short of options of places to stay. I rate the Conrad hotel for its location, as it’s close to Tokyo’s main train station, the Tsukiji Fish Market and Hamarikyu Gardens.

Relax on the beaches of Okinawa

Aharen Beach on Okinawa

If you’d like to spend time on the beach during your Japan honeymoon then Okinawa is a fitting choice. A collection of over 160 islands with a subtropical climate and beaches to rival those of the Maldives, this archipelago is a direct contrast to Japan’s fast-paced cities.

Okinawa is a short domestic flight from Honshu, Japan’s main island. For a quieter experience, head to Miyako Island where accommodation tends to be smaller, boutique properties that lead onto white sand beaches. If you’d like an island that is a little more active, there is Ishigaki Island . Here you can scuba dive and snorkel, or take day trips to nearby Iriomote Island, an area of swamps and mangroves that provides the ideal setting for jungle hikes.

Japan’s less obvious highlights (Hokkaido)

Flower fields around Shikisai Hill in Hokkaido

For honeymoon couples who would like to explore Japan’s great outdoors away from the crowds, I’d recommend heading to the northern island of Hokkaido . Compared to Honshu, Hokkaido is much less visited by Westerners.

The area is known as Japan’s ‘wild north’, a collection of tree-covered national parks, fishing towns and mountain villages. The best way to travel around is to drive along the island’s quiet roads . Getting behind the wheel is an absolute pleasure, especially during Koyou season when the landscape is awash with autumn hues.

During the summer months between June and August the rolling fields of the lowland areas feature rows and rows of brightly coloured flowers. Sunflowers and lavender are harvested here and you’ll drive past contrasting fields of purple and yellow.

Wildlife is also prevalent on Hokkaido, both in the national parks and on the coast. During my time on the island I visited the Shiretoko Peninsula on the east coast where I took a whale watching cruise and was lucky enough to spot a sperm whale. You may also see Hokkaido brown bears, Hokkaido red foxes, deer and an array of seabirds.

Generally, accommodation on Hokkaido is a little more basic than on the other islands, and smaller, boutique properties are harder to come by. Options range from small lodges with limited facilities, to larger, sprawling resorts that can be a little dated. However, what you lose in comfort you gain in experience.

Best time to honeymoon in Japan

Chureito Pagoda with Mount Fuji in the background

Japan is a year-round destination and there are benefits to visiting during each season. March to May is the most popular time to visit, when the cherry blossom is in full bloom. However, I try to visit in the autumn (October to November), when the trees turn a vivid red. At this time, the country is just as impressive as during cherry blossom, but has fewer crowds.

In the mountainous rural areas, you can find some peace bathing in hot spring water ‘onsen’ baths, hike to ancient temples and spend some time at an intimate and authentic monastery.

Our top example Japan honeymoons

Autumn Lake

Our trip was to Thailand, Cambodia and Singapore. This is the second trip we plan with Jacada and they have both been outstanding. We were two couples travelling and we are very appreciative of the hotel and tours recommendations we received on the planning stage and the flexibility and courtesy of the local tour guides whom accommodated all our requests.…

I've traveled a lot, but never like this! My recent trip to Japan with Jacada exceeded my expectations in every aspect. Working with Lauren and Leanne was easy right from the beginning, and they truly turned it into the most effortless and relaxing vacation I've ever experienced. There's no way I would have ever been able to plan a trip…

Our experience with Jacada was wonderful. We worked with Rosanna and Cathy who assisted in planning our honeymoon to Japan and Thailand. We wanted a trip that would highlight the amazing food that both countries had to offer, and we were not disappointed! Our trip was filled with food tours, cooking classes, and even more experiences that we will never…

I can't recommend Jacada enough! If you want a curated and hassle free trip, do it with them! They planned all details and gave us plenty of info leading up to the trip that we really didn't need to do much ourselves. We decided to use them for a culture/food trip through Japan and it was beyond exceptional! The best!

Absolutely seemless experience. A perfectly planned trip to Japan. Would definitely use them again and have been raving about them since I’ve returned. Charlie and Gilda were amazing.
