To say that my trip to Iran was amazing would be an understatement. Tap Persia was the best agency that I could have chosen, they organized everything perfectly for me, my guide Mojtaba was kind and knowledgeable and honestly, I have no adequate words to describe how beautiful my trip was. I spent 8 days covering many cities and came back wanting more! Thank you Rasool and Mojtaba for your kindness and most excellent customer service! I have every intention of coming back to beautiful Iran again! Best, Nasseema Visited May 2022 Tripadvisor

I got TAP Persia from TripAdvisor. This was my first experience and first visit to Iran with my wife. When I contacted this company through one of this company guy named Rasool, I found him very positive and true. He introduced me an other nice person named Shorab, who was our trip organiser. Our visa was done in 2 days with the help of nice lady Sara. Our whole plan was done as İ discussed with Shorab. Our all hotels in 4 different cities, internal transportation i.e VIP bus, domestic flight and 5 star sleeper train were booked by this guy. We didn't find a single problem anywhere. Special thanks to this guy Shorab. Shorab invited us in his office in Isfahan and served us with tea and other items. We met there the whole team of Tap Persia. We found them hardworking, honest with their work, sincere and busy to serve their clients as much as they can. We spent some hours with Shorab in Isfahan and enjoyed with his hospitality. İ highly recommend this company to all those who wants to visit Iran without any hassles and worries. Our best wishes and prayers are always with this company and all their workers. Such an amazing Iranian travel agency. I have found tappersia on Instagram while searching for things about Iran. This 15 days vacation was something I really wanted to do. How amazing this country and people are. Tappersia is what every foreigner needs, to go to Iran. Good and professional staff, very nice, friendly and helpful all the time. Ara was our first tourist guide in Tehran. He was very nice, polite and kind. Always worried about what we would like to see and about our preferences. He has a good historic and cultural background and he is excellent explaining everything about Iran's culture and history. Ebrahim, our second guide. He is an excellent, kind and sweet person. He has that special feeling about what people need to know and like to see. We immediately felt a strong bond with him. Although he is a very nice and funny person he is also serious and professional when he speaks about Iran and its cultural heritage and history. He did everything to make our stay as nice as possible. Not only he was an excellent driver but an amazing tour guide. We will recommend him to every tourist going to Iran. He could read our minds and understand exactly what we want and what our preferences were. Ali was our third tour guide. He took us to the Kerman desert. In our first contact, we immediately realize he was very good at his job. He also worried about our food preferences and allergies. He showed us all the beauties of the desert - precious peal hidden in Iran. Such a fantastic and professional guide as well. We had a wonderful dinner together. We will remember it. Last but not least Moji. He took us to Persepolis, Necropolis and Pasargard. What an amazing way to end our staying in Iran. He was wonderful telling us about how everything started in these beautiful and ancient places. We could see how thrill he was telling us about all the history. Finally a special thank to Tappersia for every single moment we spent in Iran. These have been for sure one of the most wonderful vacations we could have had. Thank you so much to all of you. Most relaxed holiday thanks to TAP Persia. We came in a troubled time so booked everything through TAP Persia just so that we would feel a bit more secure but the experience was beyond expectations. I have never had a more relaxed holiday. Everything was already booked for us; we had a private car picking us up every time we changed places, offering tours and stops in between all this on a very affordable price and always being there for every question we had. Totally recommended!   Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

I had an amazing time due to the amazing service provided by TAP Persia. Since the first contact Maryam and Rasool were super helpful, willing to explain everything we needed and replying in a very effective manner at all times. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and I strongly recommend them to everyone that wants to have a relaxed yet fun and cultural experience. Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

Before applying for a visa through TAP Persia, I looked up review's to see if they were trustworthy. The many good reviews almost seemed to be good to be true. But after experiencing their service first hand, I can say that they truly deserve the rating. After payment issues, they went ahead with the process anyways. Without a guarantee or anything. A show of faith from their side shows a great mentality if you ask me. So I'm glad I chose them to arrange the Iranian visa/code. Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

Best travel agency you can find. I travelled for three months in and had the support of TAP Persia at every step of the way. They took care of my visa, my tourist (credit) card and registered my phone after a month. During my travels I could always call or text them about any issue I had. They booked several bus, train or flight tickets for me on short notice. I also got to meet them in person when I was in Isfahan and became really good friends with them. TAP Persia is the best, most professional and friendliest tourist office you can find. You‘ll be in the best hands and won’t have to worry about a thing. I hope to see them again soon! TAP Persia helped me so much on my first adventure in Iran. I didn’t know where to start, but a friend recommended TAP Persia. Before my arrival staff was on call to help me when my flight was delayed. They were flexible to change the “original” route so I could visit the desert and everything I wanted to see without hustle and at a really good price. I did this on a quite small budget. All guides were great! And when I arrived to Isfahan I went to see the the office of TAP Persia and the wonderful people behind it. I’ll be back soon! Visited Nov 2019 Tripadvisor

Over the years and despite preferring to do things by myself, I’ve relied and many tour companies on some locations. I’ve chosen TAP Persia and I was not proven wrong. 🙂 paying a lot of money in advance is something I dread, but did. My trust was never misplaced. They helped me with my visa application (that I did in Istanbul), all of my in between cities transportation, hotels and a few guides. The hotels were amazing, the drivers drove good and safe, always kind; the guides super knowledgeable. The few changes I asked for on the ground (a guide where I hadn’t booked one, changes in itinerary, extra space in last train) were done with care and great effort. Never had to beg or insist. I would totally recommend using their services. You are always in contact with them by multiple ways and their representatives are all really nice! Iran is a wonderful destination and TAP Persia does it justice. Visited Nov 2019 Tripadvisor

Iran Travel FAQ

Is it safe to travel to iran now.

In general, Iran is much safer than many from the West might believe.  Most people are genuinely friendly  and interested to know about you and your country, so leave aside your preconceptions and come with an open mind.

Iran is still a relatively  low-crime country , although thefts and muggings have been on the increase in recent years. Keep your wits about you, and take the  usual precautions  against pickpockets in crowded bazaars and buses, for sure much safer than any other touristic city.

Ignore the  media hype , your chances of facing anti-Western sentiment as a traveler are none. Even hardline Iranians make a clear distinction between the Western governments they distrust and individual travelers who visit their country.

Is it possible to use a credit card in Iran?

No. It is not possible. Because of the sanction against Iranian banks, you are not able to use a credit card in Iran so you need to bring cash with you. Alight there are some new solutions for you to open an account and have a local card.

When is the best time to visit Iran?

March, April, and May are in the peak season of the year. Persian New Year starts on March 21st, or 22nd. There are many travelers not just from Iran but also from all over the world who are eager to see Persian ceremonies and the like. For those who like to have a more relaxing time and to stay in cozy places and a more affordable fee, quiet sights, more relaxing time, and less hustle and bustle visits, we do recommend June, July, and August .

Is there any limitation on travel to Iran as an unmarried couple?

No , do not worry at all. There is no limitation for unmarried couples to travel to Iran. They can stay at the hotel in the same room without any problem because the hotel won’t ask about your relationship.

What to wear in Iran?

Obeying Islamic rules including Hijab or Islamic dress code is necessary for Iran. However, these rules are not observed very strictly , especially for tourists and foreigners . You must not worry about maintaining your hijab since in times you have forgotten about it, the maximum penalty will be a request (usually in a kind way) to make it correct.

Is there Internet access in Iran?

Internet access is pretty good with lots of coverage everywhere and for sure cheap . All the hotels, restaurants, and cafes+ in Iran have WIFI so you can access the Internet when you are at your hotel in all cities.

Additionally, Let’s go Iran will give you an Iranian sim card upon your arrival. This way, you will have Internet access in the streets during your tour. If your data is finished, you can ask your guide to help you to recharge it.

Please keep in mind a point regarding the social Apps (Media) in Iran: You can use What's app, Linkedin, and Instagram in Iran easily and without any restrictions. BUT Facebook, Telegram, and Twitter are blocked in Iran. To use them, you need to install apps to bypass the filtering.

What are the extra costs you need to pay during your trip to Iran?

The entrance fee is approximately 1 to 10 US$ per person for each site. Some sites are less expensive and some sites are more expensive.

A very good traditional meal in a good restaurant is almost 7 US$ per person,

You are able to bring your money in Euro or Dollars and exchange your money in the reliable exchange offices in main cities, and at the airports.

Please notice that it is not necessary to pay tips to the persons who meet during your trip in Iran, but if you are interested to pay tips to them, you can pay 10 US$ per day

What can I buy as a souvenir in Iran? Can I buy souvenirs like Persian rugs in Iran?

Because of the rich culture of Iran, you can find various handicrafts there. You will have many options to choose as a souvenir in each city in Iran such as Iranian rugs , saffron , pistachios , and handmade crafts .

  • What are your opening hours? Monday - Thursday : 9am to 6pm Friday : 9am to 5:30pm Saturday - Sunday : 9:30am to 4:30pm
  • Do I have to travel on certain dates? Because all of our trips are tailor-made, you can depart on any date you wish (depending on flights) and for as long as you wish. The itineraries provided on our website are suggestions only and you can change any aspect to suit your tastes and budget. Your destination specialist will be able to provide advice and answer your questions.
  • Will I be travelling as part of a group? No, our tailor-made trips are arranged on an individual basis. This means you are not tied to the wishes of a group and can arrange your itinerary at your own pace. If you are interested in a Group Tour, we do offer a range of departures in small groups of up to 16 people.
  • Isn’t it easier and cheaper to arrange the holiday myself? Many of our clients like the independence that tailor-made travel brings, without the 'regimentation' of organized group tours, but with the reassurance of our professional planning and back-up services. For example, if the flight that we've booked is delayed, it's down to us to re-arrange your travel in the country. When things go wrong, an independent traveller may find themselves putting in a good deal of time re-organising their plans, when they should be enjoying the trip. We also regularly hear from travellers claiming that they can independently organise the same trip for a lower price. Almost invariably it is not 'like for like' and they may find they incur much more expense during their travels.

Everywhere you look in Iran, there are reminders of the rich history and vibrant traditions of the Persian Empire, from the remains of King Darius’ palace at Persepolis to the Zoroastrian ‘Towers of Silence’ in Yazd. Everywhere you look in Iran, there are reminders of the rich history and vibrant traditions of the Persian Empire, from the remains of King Darius’ palace at Persepolis to the Zoroastrian ‘Towers of Silence’ in Yazd. Our Iran tours and holidays highlight some of the finest ancient architecture found anywhere in the world. Isfahan was described as “half the world” and with its stunning mosques, bridges and squares it’s not difficult to see why. Other architectural highlights include the intricately carved domes and madrasas of Shiraz and the ingenious wind towers of Yazd. With 21, it is home to the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites for Culture in the Middle East.

Contrary to the media perception of Iran, the country has always been outward-looking and has a long history of learning and poetry. Visiting the tomb of Hafez in Shiraz you will find old and young gathered to pay tribute and to read his words of love and wine. Travellers on our Iran tours are invariably overwhelmed by the friendliness and hospitality of the people, and it is the one thing our guests comment on again and again – how welcome they were made to feel. This is a country with a strong cultural heart and a long tradition of Persian hospitality.

Iran’s capital of Tehran is a bustling contemporary city with luxury retail outlets, fashionable restaurants and modern skyscrapers, while the ancient cities of Shiraz, Yazd and Isfahan offer a more traditional Persian experience, with their winding streets, coffee shops, peaceful gardens and impressive mosques. Iran is a very youthful country, with over 65% of the population being under 35, and in the cities, you will find locals pushing the dress code as far as they can. In the countryside meanwhile, you will find a more conservative but equally welcoming Iran.

Highlights of rural Iran include the Bavanat valley, a beautiful and fertile region of apple orchards, walnut forests and alpine scenery, which is a great place to experience a homestay. Journeying north to the shores of the Caspian Sea is the perfect antidote to the frenetic pace of city life, where you can explore “assassins’’ castles”, the striking Alborz mountains, pretty towns including Bandar-e-Anzali (famous for its caviar fishery) and meet nomadic people. Head east for the Lut Desert, where you can discover ancient Zoroastrian cave dwellings, forgotten strongholds and vast landscapes containing a timeless beauty.

Although it may receive headlines in the media, there is so much more to Iran than what is seen on the frontpage. It’s a nation of fabulous cultural wealth and historical significance whose people are friendly, and rightly proud of their long heritage. Why not step off the tourist trail for your holiday, and experience all that the country has to offer with Wild Frontiers group and tailor-made Iran holidays. Read our guide to visiting Iran, including information about obtaining visas, safety, dress code and FCO advice.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Iran though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. We recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Currency

In Iran the official unit of currency is the Iranian Rial, but Toman are also referred to often. 1 Toman is the equivalent of 10 Rials, so essentially you knock off a ‘0’.

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Being an Islamic Republic, Iran has a dress code for women by law that applies everywhere outside your hotel bedroom. Please note the advice given on this in the “packing list” section that follows. Note that in many mosques we visit it will be necessary to remove your shoes before entering. Women will sometimes be required to wear a chador at holy sites and this will be provided where necessary. In some mosques there are separate areas for men and women which should also be respected.

Language & Religion

The official national language is Persian, also referred to as Farsi, of which its oldest records date back to the Persian Empire of the 6th Century BC.

The large majority of the population are Islamic and belong to the Shi’a branch of Islam, which is the official state religion. There are minority groups of Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians.

Time

Iran is 3.5 hours ahead of GMT. A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

As an Islamic Republic almost, all alcohol is banned in Iran. The import, sale, manufacture and consumption of alcohol in Iran is strictly forbidden on religious grounds, with the only exceptions for certain recognised Iranian religious minorities (NB. not foreigners).  Penalties can be severe so do not attempt to bring alcohol into the country or try to buy it during your trip.

In Iran you will find the meals are mainly rice-based and that shashlik (kebab) is very popular, with lamb and chicken widely served. Many varied salads are also available, along with some tasty stews of meat, vegetables and pulses. Picnics are also a popular Iranian pastime.

Best time to visit iran.

The climate of Iran is mostly arid or semi-arid, with a subtropical climate along the Caspian Coast. Generally, the hottest month is July, the coldest months are December and January, and the wettest month is January. Tourists visit Iran during the summer months (June - September) for the sunshine and regional festivals, and during the winter months (November - March) for skiing.

Culture and customs

Being one of the oldest continuously inhabited civilisations in the world, modern-day Iranian culture is enriched by centuries of tradition. Years of trade, conquest and invasion have created a distinct culture with myriad influences from far and wide, resulting in an overriding national identity and culture rich in symbolism. Religion plays an important part in many aspects of Iranian society - the legal and educational systems, dress, marriage, architecture, the arts and the media are all affected. As Iran is an Islamic nation, visitors can expect to see the hallmarks of Islam throughout Iran; mosques, the call to prayer, strict dress codes and the observance of Ramadan are the most easily noticed, although there is a complex network of rules, customs and traditions at play every day.

Although Iran's population is largely youthful and urban-centric, rich Persian artistic traditions are alive in contemporary Iran, with much of the elaborate architecture, cuisine, handicrafts and popular poetry of Iran having their origins in ancient Persia. Iranian hospitality is world-famous; guests are often touched by the sincerity, politeness and generosity of spirit of their Iranian hosts. Accepting tea and food is considered polite if offered, as is acting graciously and modestly while visiting someone's home.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Iran

1. Dried Fruit & Nuts

Dried apricots, prunes, dates, raisins and figs can be bought from shops, street stalls and bazaars and make wonderful, healthy snacks. Also, you'll be able to find a wide variety of nuts sold by the bag - pistachios, almonds and walnuts are usually the best picks.

2. Persian Ice Cream

Flavoured with orange blossom, rose water, honey, nuts or saffron, Persian ice cream is different to Western-style desserts. Often made with chunks of cream and wedged between two waffles, don’t miss the chance to try this type of sweet treat.

3. Khoresht

This hearty Persian stew can be found everywhere in Iran and has many variations. Meat eaters will love the split-pea and lamb combination, while the eggplant, mushroom and spinach options will delight vegetarians.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with Afghanistan,   Armenia ,   Azerbaijan , Iraq, Pakistan,   Turkey   and   Turkmenistan , Iran is located in the southwest corner of Asia. The Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman provide shoreline in the north and south, and while Iran lacks a major river system, there are several small rivers and streams throughout the country. Much of Iran’s terrain is mountainous, with most of the population living in the basins, plateaus and plains. The deserts of Iran are mainly uninhabited, with the exception of a few oases, while the major cities are quite modern, with well-developed infrastructure and housing.

History and government

Early history.

The country now known as Iran was known as Persia for hundreds of years and has been occupied by people for many centuries. Archaeological evidence suggests that people populated the land here as long as 7,000 years ago, with civilisations and societies developing as the surrounding nations and areas evolved. Persia's fate was very much tied up with the destinies of neighbouring countries, so as empires rose and fell (and leaders came and went), Persia was affected by invasions and confrontations with the Greeks, Mongols, Romans, Arabs, Turks and others.

Under the reign of Darius the Great and Cyrus the Great (during the Achaemenid Empire), the Persian Empire expanded to be the largest empire of the time. During this period, coins were first introduced as a form of currency, building works on Persepolis began and a system of far-reaching highways and canals were built. Islam was brought to Persia around 637 AD; the population slowly adopted the religion and by the 11th century, the majority of the population was practising Islam. Despite adopting the religion of the conquerors, Persian culture, style and art was largely preserved, which led to the 'Islamic Golden Age' - a time when Persian literature, philosophy, science and art blossomed (750-1258).

This time of creativity and prosperity was brought to an end by the Mongols, who invaded in 1219. This invasion proved devastating, with a monumental loss of culture occurring due to the widespread demolition of infrastructure, libraries and mosques. Famine and violence accounted for a steep decline in population, which was worsened by the arrival of the Plague during the 14th century. Persia was in better shape by the 16th century, with the Safavid Dynasty (1502-1736) establishing the modern nation-state of Iran.

Recent history

The Great Persian Famine of 1870 and 1871 accounted for up to 2 million deaths in the region, but Iran's fortunes changed with the discovery of oil in 1908. This discovery also increased interest from other nations wishing to capitalise on this precious commodity. Iran endured many changes in leadership due to invasions and coups during the 1940s, 50s and 60s, leading to the Iranian Revolution. The Iranian Revolution (also known as the Islamic Revolution) took place between 1978 and 1979 and resulted in the birth of the Islamic Republic. Ayatollah Khomeini served as leader until his death in 1989, after enduring the Iran-Iraq war, which was waged between 1980 and 1988. The Iraqi use of chemical warfare during this time caused international fury and led to the deaths of many of Iran's people.

Top 10 beautiful buildings of Iran

1. qavam house.

This elegant, traditional house located in Shiraz was built by the Qavam family in the mid-19th century but is now open to the public as a museum. The fine paintings and mirrored porch are the highlights, but the peaceful gardens, pools and courtyards are also worthy of attention.

2. Abbasian House

This large historic house located in Kashan was built in the late 18th century. Featuring several serene courtyards, highly detailed wall carvings, peaceful pools and arched doorways, this fine example of Kashani residential architecture is now preserved as a museum.

3. Tomb of Hafez

While not the largest or most elaborate of places, Shiraz’s Tomb of Hafez possesses a simple, organic beauty. The pavilion, memorial hall and surrounding gardens are well-preserved examples of Iranian architecture - a fitting memorial to one of Persia’s most loved mystical poets.

4. Jameh Mosque of Yazd

This exceptional example of Azari-style Persian architecture has stood in Yazd for centuries. People come to admire the blue-green tiles, deep-blue interior and grand arches, but it's mainly known for its grand minarets, which are among the tallest in Iran.

This unique three-tiered wonder of Yazd possesses beautiful order and symmetry. When lit up at night, its many arched alcoves provide a stunning spectacle to view and capture on camera.

8. Persepolis

This is the ancient crown jewel of Iran. The buildings of Persepolis may no longer be in as good a condition as they were thousands of years ago, but they are still full of beauty and mystery.

This stunning mausoleum is the final resting place of many of Iran's celebrated poets, scientists and mystics. Built in the 1970s, it's a great example of contemporary architecture that manages to remain true to its cultural roots.

With ancient bazaars, handicraft centres and modern boutiques, there are a huge variety of ways to shop in Iran - from bargaining with a bazaar vendor to buying fixed-price items from a museum gift shop.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and Events in Iran

Also known as Persian New Year, this is one of the most important traditional holidays on the Iranian calendar. Heralding the advent of spring, this celebration with Zoroastrianism roots is a time of feasting with family, celebrating in nature, springcleaning the home and purchasing flowers and new clothes for the New Year. Many different types of rituals are performed during this time and can vary from family to family, area to area.

Ramadan and Eid

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Iran and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iran?

Note: This information is under review due to the current situation in the country.

Most foreign visitors require a visa to enter Iran. Please be aware that this can be a frustrating and stressful process, and can take from 6-8 weeks. You will need to allow sufficient time for this and plan any other travel around your Iran trip accordingly. The cost of a visa also varies depending on your nationality and also changes regularly, making it hard for us to advise of the actual cost. But you should plan for it to cost somewhere around 100-180 EUR depending if you get a visa before departure or on arrival.

Iranian visas are issued in a two-step process and this will differ according to your nationality.

  • An authorisation code for your visa must be issued by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • A visa for your passport must then be obtained at an Iranian Embassy once the authorisation code has been issued, or on arrival (depending on your nationality).

If you are travelling on a UK, USA or CANADIAN passport, please be aware that your visa process can take longer due to government regulations. Please check that you will have sufficient time to obtain a visa before departure.

We are not currently operating in Iran and, therefore not facilitating/processing authorisation code applications at this time.

Squat toilets are the most common variety in Iran, although flushable western-style toilets can be found in some tourist areas and hotels. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap, as these aren't always provided.

What will it cost for a...?

  • Basic Lunch = 6USD
  • Cup of coffee = 1USD to 4USD
  • Short taxi ride = 5USD

Are credit cards accepted widely in Iran?

Iran is a cash economy and recent unrest has made it difficult to access cash. Travellers are advised that travellers’ cheques are difficult to change and non-Iranian debit, credit and cash cards will not work. You are also unable to use commercial banks or money transfer companies to transfer money.

What is ATM access like in Iran?

My friend and I took a classical Iran tour with Destination Iran. This involved Destination Iran arranging a driver/guide ans an 9 day itinerary. I would thoroughly recommend Destination Iran for any person interested in visiting the fascinating country. In particular Rahman was very attentive and always was keen to help and was very quick in replying, if we had any queries. Go to Iran you will not regret it.

Thank you very much Fergal. It’s a pleasure to get to know you. I’m so happy I could see you and Jim in Iran although it was only for a very short time.

What a wonderful trip! We learned of Destination Iran through a friend. Rahman personally arranged our tour and visa, and we were delighted with his friendliness, his professionalism, and his determination to make sure that we had a great experience in Iran. He also set us up with the best imaginable private tour guide. I hope we will return to Iran some day–and, if we do, we will definitely contact Destination Iran.

Thank you Mike for your kind message. It’s great to know you’ve enjoyed your trip to our country. I should also appreciate your patience with us as some situations were not completely under our control and required waiting a bit longer than what you’re used to. However, your professional attitude and experience in understanding different workflows in different countries helped us deliver our services as promised. I will be more than happy to help you experience another Iran’s trip.

As we had only 6 days for the trip, Rahman recommended tours that covered Shiraz, Tehran, and Esfahan. Although it was a short trip, we were blown away by the rich history of the Persian Empire and the archaeological evidences it left behind. We visited Persepolis and Tomb of Cyrus the great, just to list a few. Rahman is extremely knowledgeable in Iranian culture and history. We were introduced to some of the famous poets such as Hafez, Sa’dy and Rumi and what their poetry speaks of.

All in all, Destination Iran tour packages s are something I would definitely recommend, as Rahman is quick to reply to emails, and addresses all our concerns in making sure the trip is a positive and memorable experience for us.

Thank you Nuraida for your kind comments. In fact, 6 days is a very short amount of time like you’ve mentioned it. That’s why we call that package “Iran Highlights Tour”! Hopefully, on your next tour, we can cover more of Iran and its attractions.

Rahman was our guide for a two-week trip in Iran. It’s hard to imagine a better guide. His English is excellent, his interests are broad, and his knowledge is deep.

The trip was carefully planned, but Rahman was flexible: when something interesting but not on the agenda occurred, time was made for us to enjoy it — old men singing under a bridge in Isfahan, a lively modern restaurant in Shiraz, quickly planned lunch in an Iranian home on the road.

He accommodated our group’s (six people) interest in food; we were given regional specialties everywhere. Rahman did not have memorized speeches, but simply talked about sites, architecture, history, and life in Iran. He did not use notes — except for identifying the visiting groups carved in Persepolis. He apologized for having to use the notes there!!

His interest in the architecture was catching. He was open to all questions. His task as guide was certainly made easier by the beauty of the country and the friendliness of the Iranians that we met.

My wife and I have traveled and worked abroad for decades. This was, however, one of the best trips ever.

The trip with you was also one of the most enjoyable ones for me too. You remember the details so well. I feel relieved when I see people like you have enjoyed their trip to Iran. It’ll be great to travel with you again.

I traveled to Iran for two weeks with several friends a few years ago, and Rahman was our guide. It really was the journey of lifetime. I cannot speak highly enough of Iran as a destination and Rahman as a guide.

The sights are marvelous in the true meaning of the word, the landscapes vast and changing, the people warm and friendly – the whole trip was a complete eye opener. In particular, Rahman is a wonderful guide – his depth of knowledge about his country is extraordinary, and spans its deep history and culture through to its modern life, and he organised everything superbly with great attention to detail.

I intend to return to Iran, as it is such a vast country with so much to see and experience. If you haven’t been, go now – and make sure you plan your Iran trip with Rahman, as you could not have a better guide to this fascinating country.

Thank you Sarah. I cannot thank you enough for all the kind words. BTW, you said you wanted to go back to Iran for another visit. This is fantastic. I look forward to meeting you again.

My wife and I took a classical tour in Iran in May of 2017. We had a wonderful , sometimes exhausting – but very interesting tour. We both loved the country, the friendly people, good food and fantastic historical sites. We’ve had an excellent guide with a lot of knowledge about Iran; past and present. He took very good care of us. We would like to recommend this tour – and especially Rahman as a guide.

Thank you for your kind words Steinar. I’m very happy to hear that you’ve had a good time with us in Iran. I hope to see you again and have more fun and quality time together.

My husband and I visited Iran for our honeymoon in April 2018, with a perfect itinerary put together by Rahman (who was not our guide, although we did have the pleasure of meeting him during our trip). The Iran tour package offered to us was incredible, we loved everywhere from Tehran to Ahwaz (and the nearby towns of Shush and Shushtar which will take your breath away), Shiraz and Persepolis, Esfahan, Kashan and Yazd and our lovely homestay in the tiny desert village of Toudeshk-Cho (and all of the magical little places we stopped off at on the way).

There is not a single part of our Iran trip that we would have changed, although than perhaps having more time in Iran! There is history everywhere, and aside from the amazing art, architecture and history that is everywhere – the Persian food is delicious and the people are incredibly friendly. We cannot wait to go back one day.

It was a great pleasure to communicate with you during the preparatory period before the tour as well as the meeting during your tour.

I’m very happy to know that you’ve enjoyed your trip. I appreciate your kind words and hope to see you soon in Iran on a different route to explore more amazing experiences with you.

Central Parts of Iran can be very frustrating in summer. I recommend taking a tour to the west of Iran in this season.

Frequently asked questions

Generally, Iran is safe for tourists. Iran has a complicated history and sometimes protests break out (as in recent times) but the crime rate in Iran is similar to, say, the UK. If you assimilate and stay away from politics and protests you are less likely to come into trouble.

A modest wardrobe is advisable and for women, you want to ensure you have a headscarf and closed in shoes.

If you have limited time in Iran, we suggest visiting Tehran, Esfahan and Shiraz. With a little more time you may wish to visit Tabriz or head towards the coastline for a holiday by the Caspian Sea.

Life happens - we get it! Read more here

The ‘pink mosque’ in Shiraz (Nasir al-mulk) and the ‘blue mosque’ in Tabriz (Masjed-e Kabud) are iconic images of Iran. Persepolis, the remnant capital of the Persian Empire, in Shiraz is also very popular with tourists.

Autumn and Spring are generally the best seasons to travel to Iran. Aim for travel during March, April or May, or September, October and November.

In Shiraz visit the Nasir al-mulk mosque and check out Persepolis, the remnant capital of the ancient Persian empire. In Tehran, visit Golestan Palace to learn about the history and culture of Iran. While in Tehran, make sure you check out the bazaar.

Hey IranOnTour team. Hope you guys are fine. Where can I see the adventure tours?

Hey Jerry. Hope you’re fine too. You can visit our adventure tours website ( https://iranonadventure.com/ ).

Hey. Thanks for your quick reply. Cheers!

Hey guys. What’s the best tour option for a family trip in Iran?

Hey Sam. Hope you’re doing great. Private tours are the best options for family trips. If you share more about your interests, I’ll be glad to suggest an itinerary based on your interests.

Hi there. Hope you’re doing fine. Which Iranian cities represent the Iranian arts better?

Greetings dear Robert. It depends on the type of art. For example, Isfahan is famous for Persian music and it has a nice Persian music museum. Tabriz is famous for carpets, Shiraz is famous for poetry, Yazd is famous for pottery, and Tehran has nice art museums and is famous for contemporary arts. Many other Iranian cities are famous for other types of art as well.

Hi there. Very interesting! Thanks for your quick response.

Greetings. How are the Americans viewed in Iran?

Dear Jamie. Hope you are fine and happy. The Iranian people are famous for hospitality and have good attitudes towards other nationalities. Americans are welcome in Iran as well.

  • Visa Sticker or Entry Stamps : You don't get any sticker or stamp in your passport when collecting the visa, or when entering or exit Iran. The visa is electronic and you receive a paper copy which must be kept until exit from Iran.
  • Iran Visa Application Process

In compliance with the regulations set forth by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a Tourist visa is granted to foreign nationals who wish to travel to Iran either independently, as part of a group, or to visit friends and relatives.

This visa allows for a maximum stay of 90 days, with the possibility of extensions within Iran, and remains valid for a period of 3 months from the date of issuance. Depending on your nationality and the consulate you approach, you have the option to submit your documents and obtain a visa after a few days without requiring a reference from Iran. Alternatively, you can apply through the new e-visa system. However, this process may prove time-consuming or unproductive, especially when applying from outside your home country.

Most consulates typically require an authorization letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran, a crucial step in the visa application process. Once you have obtained this authorization code, the remaining steps are relatively straightforward, and you can usually receive your visa within 1 or 2 days.

While an Entry (Business) visa is an option, it necessitates an invitation letter from your Iranian host. It’s important to note that opting for a tourist visa provides the advantage of enjoying special tourist rates with hotels and other accommodations.

Step 1 : Complete the Application Form

Your submitted data will be used to generate a formal application sent to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, granting authorization to the consulate for visa issuance. It’s crucial to ensure the accuracy of the details entered, as they must align with your passport information and the documents you will later submit to the consulate for visa collection.

Step 2 : Payment

Upon submission of your application, you will be provided with the service bill and payment instructions. It’s important to note that this charge is separate from the visa fee required for the consulate to stamp your passport in Step 4.

Step 3 : Obtaining the Visa Grant Notice

Upon completion, you will receive an authorization letter, referred to as the Visa Grant Notice, which will be sent to the Iranian Consulate or airport specified in your application form. You will be provided with both the visa code and a visa grant notice document, allowing you to retrieve your visa. Please note that this code is exclusively valid for the designated consulate and only for a duration of 2 or 3 months from the date of issue. If needed, you can request us to forward it to another consulate for an additional charge.

Iran Visa Grant Notice

Step 4 :  Visa Collection

With the reference code in hand, proceed to the consulate accompanied by your passport (valid for the next 6 months), the completed visa application form (available for pickup at the consulate or downloadable from their website), 2 recent passport-sized photos (sometimes not required), the applicable visa fee (subject to your nationality), and the authorization reference code. Always ensure to verify the specific document requirements with the consulate, as variations may exist from one consulate to another. Additionally, explore the possibility of submitting the documents by mail and receiving the visa through this method. For further information, please reach out to the consulate directly. You can access a directory of all Iranian consulates here .

Step 5. Arrival in Iran

Please share your feedback with us regarding the visa collection process. Let us know if it was straightforward or if you encountered any challenges. In the event of any issues, rest assured that we will stand by you to resolve them until you successfully obtain your visa. Ukraine-Russia war: Latest updates

Follow our Ukraine war live page for all the latest developments and analysis of the conflict. Listen to a Daily podcast episode on the notion of the UK putting troops on the ground in Ukraine as you scroll.

Tuesday 16 April 2024 13:05, UK

  • The big picture: What's happening with the war as we enter a new week?
  • Your questions answered: Is it too late to save Ukraine?

While we haven't been able to bring you live updates today, we have been keeping an eye on what's been happening in the Ukraine conflict.

Here's a quick round-up of the key updates so far:

  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a lack of air defence missiles prevented Ukraine from thwarting a Russian missile attack last week that destroyed the biggest power plant in the region around the capital Kyiv;
  • Ukraine's air defence systems destroyed all nine drones launched in a Russian attack, the air force said;
  • The IAEA warned that attacks on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant put the world at risk;
  • The Kremlin reacted to French President Emmanuel Macron's call for a truce in international conflicts during the Paris Olympics and said Ukraine might use it as an opportunity to regroup and rearm;
  • German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he had asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to exert influence over Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

Good morning, and welcome to our overview of the war between Russia and Ukraine as it rolls into another week.

The big news of the weekend came from the Middle East as Iran launched a significant missile and drone attack on Israel. Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack and said Ukraine knows "very well the horror of similar attacks by Russia".

Meanwhile, a Kremlin-installed official in the southern Zaporizhzhia region said 16 people were killed in an attack on the occupied town of Tokmak, which Russia has blamed on Ukraine. Two  people were also killed in a separate shelling in the Russian-occupied Kherson region.

While our live coverage remains paused, we've zoomed out to give you the bigger picture of the war today.

The frontline

Concerns appear to be increasing that Ukraine's defences may be at risk of collapse in the face of a new Russian assault.

Sources in numerous media outlets over the past couple of weeks have raised this fear as Ukraine is facing shortages of both manpower and ammunition, and appears outmanned and outgunned on the battlefield.

Western officials told Bloomberg the country is now at its most fragile moment since the war began.

Ukraine's military chief said on Saturday that the battlefield situation in the east had "significantly worsened in recent days" and that Moscow had ramped up its assaults since Vladimir Putin extended his rule in the Russian presidential election.

Reports also suggest Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, could be among the targets for a renewed Russian assault.

Kharkiv has faced intense bombardment from Russia in recent months, coming under fire from S-300 ballistic missiles and glide bombs, and was the target of repeated attacks last week.

The city is not the most likely target of a fresh assault, media reports say, but Russian news outlets have raised the prospect.

'Massive strikes' on energy infrastructure

Overnight into Thursday saw a huge assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with 40 missiles and 40 drones reportedly sent into the country by Russia.

A thermal power plant just outside Kyiv was completely destroyed and went up in flames, while 200,000 residents in Kharkiv were left without power.

Vladimir Putin later said he had been "obliged" to attack Ukraine's energy infrastructure after Kyiv conducted attacks on Russian oil refineries.

Attacks at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in a series of drone strikes over three days.

The attacks at the Russian-occupied plant began on 7 April, with the roof of reactor 6 damaged.

Ukraine has repeatedly denied involvement and said it would never target a nuclear facility, suggesting Russia was behind the attacks.

The UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, has warned the "reckless" attacks "significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident".

It has not said who it believes is behind the attacks.

Civilian casualties increase sharply

The UN recorded a dramatic increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine in the last month.

At least 57 children were killed or injured in March - double the number in February - as Russian forces stepped up their attacks.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission said it had verified at least 604 civilians killed or injured in Ukraine in March, a 20% increase from the previous month.

"The March increase in civilian casualties was mainly due to attacks by the Russian armed forces using missiles and loitering munitions across Ukraine and increased aerial bombardments near the frontline," the Rights Office said.

It followed warnings from Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Ukraine country could run out of air defence missiles if Russia keeps up its intense bombing campaign.

On Saturday, Uk

At least 10 people, including children, have been killed by shelling in a Russian-occupied town in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region, a local Kremlin-installed official said.

International diplomacy

In a rare meeting between a head of state and a minister, Chinese President Xi Jinping met Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov for talks on Monday.

The pair met in the Chinese capital, where they pledged to strengthen communication.

It was also a big week of diplomatic talks for the UK foreign secretary, who headed to Washington to appeal to Congress over the stalled multi-billion-dollar aid package for Ukraine.

Lord Cameron made what was seen by some as an unusual trip to visit Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago - likely because Republicans blocking the aid bill in the House of Representatives are aligned with Mr Trump.

The foreign secretary was tight-lipped about what was discussed afterwards, saying the pair had "discussed a range of important geopolitical subjects".

While live coverage of the war remains paused, here's a quick round-up of the key updates:

  • Two people were killed by Ukrainian strikes on the Russian-held parts of Kherson, the Moscow-installed regional governor said;
  • Russia's defence ministry said its air defence systems destroyed 10 Ukraine-launched drones over the Krasnodar region in southern Russia and five drones over the Black Sea overnight;
  • Ukraine similarly claimed to have downed 10 Russian drones;
  • The death toll in Zaporizhzhia from yesterday's attack, which Russia blames on Ukraine, rose to 16;
  • President Zelenskyy condemned last night's attack by Iran on Israel.

A Ukrainian rocket also struck a machine-building plant in Russian-occupied Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, injuring three civilians, according to Moscow-based official Vladimir Rogov.

Meanwhile, Russia has claimed to have taken a village in Ukraine's Donetsk region.

Russia's defence ministry said the capturing of Pervomaiske had improved its tactical position on the frontline.

Ukraine's army chief has also warned the situation on the eastern front had deteriorated in recent days, with Moscow's forces intensifying its armoured assaults.

Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi said battles were still raging for control of a village west of the devastated Bakhmut - an area that has seen some of the bloodiest fighting throughout the war.

We'll be back tomorrow morning with more updates on the war in Ukraine.

Two Biden administration officials have revealed the extent of China's involvement in Russia's war on Ukraine.

The officials spoke to Reuters news agency and said China has massively increased its sales to Russia of machine tools, microelectronics and other technology to Moscow.

These items are important because Russia is using them to make tanks, aircraft, missiles and other weapons for the war.

They also said:

  • About 90% of Russia's microelectronics came from China
  • Nearly 70% of Russia's approximately $900m in machine tool imports in the last quarter of last year came from China
  • Chinese and Russian entities have been working together to make drones in Russia
  • China is helping Russia improve its satellite and other space-based capabilities for use in the war. This could increase the threat Russia poses across Europe

US President Joe Biden has previously raised concerns with Chinese President Xi Jinping about Beijing's indirect involvement in the war.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen returned this week from a visit to Beijing and said she had warned China that the Biden administration was prepared to sanction Chinese banks, companies and Beijing's leadership if they helped Russia's military in the war.

She has already been given the go-ahead from Mr Biden to sanction financial institutions that help Russia's military-industrial complex.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is due to travel to China for talks next month.

Russia, increasingly isolated economically and diplomatically, has become more reliant on China in recent months.

One official said Chinese materials are helping Moscow undertake its "most ambitious defence expansion since the Soviet era and on a faster timeline than we believed possible early on in this conflict".

"Our view is that one of the most game-changing moves available to us at this time to support Ukraine is to persuade the PRC (China) to stop helping Russia reconstitute its military industrial base. Russia would struggle to sustain its war effort without PRC input," the official said.

Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu told Reuters that Beijing has not provided weapons to any party and that it is "not a producer of or party involved in the Ukraine crisis".

"We urge the US side to refrain from disparaging and scapegoating the normal relationship between China and Russia."

If Russia defeats Ukraine it will be a "turning point in history", former UK prime minister Boris Johnson says.

Writing in the Daily Mail, he criticised Western countries for not providing Ukraine with the weapons it needs to defeat Russia.

"Every week in which we fail to do the obvious — and give the Ukrainians the weapons they need — is a week in which Putin gets closer to his disgusting ambition, to torture a European country to death.

"Every day the pressure on the Ukrainians is growing — and yet the solution is within our grasp."

Mr Johnson, who visited Ukraine a number of times during his premiership, said: "A defeat for Ukraine would usher in a new era of fear in the whole Euro-Atlantic area, as Putin continues his drive to rebuild the Soviet empire: from the Baltics to Georgia to Moldova to Central Asia to the Arctic.

"It will be a terrifying moment for the people of Taiwan and the clearest possible signal to China that the West has lost the willpower to protect democracy.

"It will be a turning point in history, the moment when the West finally loses its post-war hegemony, the moment when borders everywhere are suddenly up for grabs and aggression is seen to pay — and all because of a failure to stand up for Ukraine."

Mr Johnson warned the world is "on a knife-edge, with a real risk that Western democracies are about to be humiliated, and autocracies emboldened around the world — because of our lassitude, our pathetic refusal to do what is necessary".

He said Ukraine is so short of shells that its troops sometimes have to wait under Russian bombardment because they can't fire back.

The shortage of air defences means Kharkiv, the second-largest city, is "in danger of being turned into another Mariupol", he added.

Ukrainians were able to intercept 90% of incoming strikes, he said, but now "we are starving them, for reasons I do not understand, of the protective shields they need".

Mr Johnson called on the US Congress to approve a $60bn military aid package earmarked for Ukraine and on the Germans to supply Taurus missiles.

The West - including Britain - needs to "snap out of our sleep-walk", he said, adding: "The simplest and most cost-effective way to defend freedom is to invest now in the defence of Ukraine."

Rescue workers in Ukraine have saved five puppies from under the debris of a destroyed building.

The non-residential building was on fire in the north-eastern city of Sumy, close to the border with Russia.

A video from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine showed the firefighters cuddling the squealing puppies and rinsing them off with water.

In a post of the emergency service's Telegram channel, officials said the "little ones" were not injured.

"This rescue story reminds us of the importance of human compassion and the willingness to help everyone, regardless of the circumstances," they added.

Ex-armed forces minister James Heappey has told Sky's defence and security editor Deborah Haynes the UK should consider sending its forces to Ukraine to train troops.

On the Sky News Daily, host Tom Cheshire talks to her and Sky's military analyst Professor Michael Clarke about the interview with Mr Heappey, who stepped down from his role last month.

They assess the bleak situation in Ukraine and why the conflict is at a critical stage. They also discuss how prepared the UK would be if it faced a war in the near future.

A former Ukrainian secret service employee has been injured in Moscow after a device under his car exploded.

Vasily Prozorov suffered leg injuries that are not considered life threatening after the device detonated as he tried to start his car, Radio Free Europe cited Russian media as saying.

According to RFE, Mr Prozorov worked for Ukraine's SBU until 2018.

The following year, he told media in Moscow that he had collaborated with Russia "for ideological reasons" from April 2014 until he left the SBU.
