Amongst all the things to do in London at Christmas , this is a definite classic. Torvill & Dean you may not be, but ice rinks are undeniably fun whether you’re weaving in and out of crowds or inching your way along, clutching at the barriers. Get your skates on at London’s best ice rinks, and don’t forget to reward yourself with a hot chocolate after!

Every year, a whole host of magnificent winter pop-ups take over rooftops, riversides, and terraces, steadily feeding Londoners a diet of glorious food, warming winter cocktails, and toasty vibes. Lovely stuff – especially when you get to cosy up in an igloo all the while!

Unless you’re the hyper-organised type who’s got their gifts bought, wrapped, and under an immaculately-decorated tree already, I’ve got a feeling you’ll be needing this one. Stores all over London are dressed up for Christmas, and here’s a few with sure-fire festive appeal.

😍 Liberty’s , always London’s earliest to open Christmas shop.

Syon Park’s stunning Enchanted Woodland may have finished, but there are still light festivals aplenty to marvel at. Everywhere from the boughs of Kew Gardens to the railways on the outskirts of London are lighting up this winter, and here’s where we reckon you should be heading.

Everyone’s got a favourite, whether it’s something traditional like Miracle on 34th Street , or something explosive like Die Hard ( it’s a Christmas film, don’t @ me ). Luckily for you, the finest flick-lovers in town have been cooking up enchanting new ways to watch the classics…

📽 Luna Cinema , festive films – at a palace, no less!

A man playing an immersive game at a VR experience in London

From choir singers projecting to the rafters in the magnificent Royal Albert Hall to Crimbo-themed VR immersive experiences , there’s plenty of reason for some festive cheer this year!

🏛️ Now, when it comes to impressive buildings within the capital, then we’d argue that the Royal Albert Hall is right up there with the best of the best. Add in a Christmas show and you can see why we’re ecstatic about this one! Carols at the Royal Albert Hall  will feature a presenter and soloist who will bring a selection of incredible carols to life. This year, they’re thrilled to announce British saxophonist Jess Gillam and conductor Greg Beardsell as presenters and Cleopatra Rey and Zara McFarlane as our soloists.

🥽 If the same old Christmas markets, carol services and ice skating rinks  aren’t your cup of eggnog, immersive virtual reality arcade experience DNA VR offers the chance for you to get your hands on an alternative experience this festive season. This Christmas, DNA VR’s escape room Christmas Story  is the perfect family game, with players given the important tinsel decked task of helping a stranded Santa get home in time to deliver presents for Christmas Day. Sounds like a challenge to us!

💡Thanks to internationally renowned, award-winning Creative Director Catherine Jewkes and light art pioneers Luminism, this year’s Christmas at Kenwood promises to be more enchanting than ever. Get ready to explore the magical trail centred around Kenwood House and witness the historical building bathed in glorious light. Let’s face it, you’ll be drinking enough mulled wine this holiday season – so why not mix things up? With London boasting some of the best cocktail bars around, you can be sure of creative concoctions that’ll bewitch the tastebuds and keep you feeling merry (within your limits, of course).

🎄 Miracle at Henrietta , the insanely festive cocktail bar absolutely full of Christmas décor.

🍹 The Lucky Club Camden , bottomless fondue, margaritas and happy hours to boot too.

🐟 Sexy Fish , a host of Christmas cocktails along with Japanese food, whiskies and plenty of festive cheer. They’ve even got a theme this year billed as ‘A Whale of a Christmas’ where they’ll be whipping up Sexy Fish classics alongside Perrier-Jouët Champagne. Even better? It will be decked out to look like a magical under-the-sea world – with an added humpback whale suspended from the ceiling to boot!

🍷 Sip away on mulled wine to your heart’s content at ‘ Christmas up in the Sky ‘ – a festive-themed delight perched atop the London Bridge Rooftop Bar. Enjoy panoramic views of St. Paul’s Cathedral and more – what’s not to love?

⛄ Speaking of rooftop bars, there’s another popular one that’s had a little Christmas makeover. Ladies and gentlemen, make way for Pergola Paddington’s ‘ Deck the Halls ‘, which is filled to the brim with street food , seasonal cocktails, and toasty welcomes – and it’s seriously dreamy!

12. Immerse yourself in a whole other world

group of people with hands outstretched as fake snow falls down

Step off the streets of London and into a whole other world with these festive experiences and immersive installations. You can see the holidays in a whole new light, head back in time to a Christmas experience of old, or simply get wrapped up in festive cheer.

🕯️ Great Christmas Feast , let Charles Dickens take you on a whirlwind ride through a ghostly Christmas story.

🌎 Avora , it’s not  specifically Christmas-related, but there’s enough lights to put Regent Street to shame and they probably don’t celebrate Christmas where this adventure takes you anyway…

🎭 London is famous for being one of the best places to watch theatre in the whole world, and with productions like ELF and Edward Scissorhands arriving this year, it’s gonna be pretty easy to escape to another world! Don’t miss our full roundup of London theatre shows to see this festive season to see everything that’s on.

16. Visit Santa at one of his grottos

A picture of Shrek with a family at Shrek's Immersive Adventure

Look, half the point of the season is to annoy an old man in a white beard and red hat with requests for the LEGO set of the Death Star from Star Wars, right? At least, that’s what I did in 2021 outside a Manchester United game… But if it’s Santa you want to meet, be sure to head on over to one of his grottos that have dotted themselves around the city.

😅 Shrek The Halls , because Santa isn’t red and  green enough of course!

🎅 Alexandra Palace , Santa swaps the North Pole for North London.

🎁 Visit the magical winter garden to meet Santa and his elf assistant at the London Transport Museum , or track him down in the Museum’s galleries for a jolly selfie. 🦌 Vauxhall City Farm  is home to everything from chickens and chinchillas to sheep and goats. Heck, there’s even a pair of alpacas who starred in none other than Star Wars: The Force Awakens ! And if that wasn’t exciting enough, this festive season Santa Claus is also making his way into town!

17. Chow down on an alternative Christmas meal

A spread of festive food served at The Laundry in Brixton

Sure, the turkey and all the trimmings may be traditional, but how often have you had a bite of dry turkey or unseasoned Brussel sprouts and wished you could have been eating anything else? Well, it’s up to you to convince your family to have Thai food for Christmas this year, if you want. But otherwise here are some other Christmas-themed meals you can eat in London – with no roasts in sight.

🤤 The Festive Raan Feast at Dishoom – turkey raan or (no-Turkey raan!), sprouts with lime-chilli dressing and café favourites including small plates, grills, biryanis and festive tipples to boot too. What’s not to love?

🍗 Head Sushi Chef Miho Sato at The Aubrey is fusing the very best of Christmas feasting with their award winning edomae sushi practice, for a set menu that transitions from a selection of nigiri and sashimi favourites, towards a festive robata turkey.

😋 Festive menu at Jikoni – Inspired by her mixed heritage and personal Christmas traditions, Ravinder’s festive menu will feature an array of creative and indulgent seasonal dishes, served family style. Sign us up!

🐖 Group feasting menus at St. JOHN Bread and Wine – This Christmas, the team at St. JOHN Bread and Wine has curated a selection of feasting menus for groups large and small. Centrepieces will come in the form of either whole roast pig, grilled venison, roasted Dexter beef or Roast goose and goose fat mash, with accompanying starters and desserts paired alongside of course.

🥟 This festive period at Poon’s Wontoneria in Fitzrovia, the pop-up from Amy Poon of the eponymous Chinese restaurant family, currently residing at Carousel’s No. 23 Charlotte Street – will introduce turkey and Chinese chestnut wontons to their winter menu. A festive special available in bowls of five, the seasonal wontons will comprise succulent turkey thigh, Chinese chestnuts, goji berries, ginger and wood ear mushrooms – a perfect alternative to traditional festive dining options this Christmas.

🍷 On November 2nd, The Laundry  – Brixton’s all-day neighbourhood bistro and wine bar – will launch its new festive all-day menu from Head Chef Sami Harvey, just in time for celebrations in South London this Christmas. Available for lunch and dinner, guests will enjoy a selection of festive dishes with New World flair, alongside classic hearty winter sides of pigs in blankets, Brussel sprouts with chestnuts, Cauliflower cheese with sage and truffle gratin. Yum, yum!

How To Spend Christmas in London

View of Christmas Decs at a market, London, England, UK

We have highlighted the best holiday activities and attractions in London during the festive season. However, for visitors planning to celebrate Christmas in London – actually  December 25 – we have a few more holiday tips so that you can best plan your trip.

Christmas Eve London

In London, December 24 is not a Bank Holiday – meaning, most things are open (but may close early)…and it’s actually quite busy. While some Londoners are preparing for the festivities of the following day, many more are out celebrating with family and friends.

Some of the top things to do in London on Christmas Eve are ice skating, attending a show, last-minute Christmas shopping and drinking mulled wine at one of the Christmas markets. Christmas concerts and midnight mass are two other top Christmas Eve events in London.

Christmas Day London

The Best London Christmas Lights, England, UK

Christmas Day in London is the quietest day of the year. Most stores and restaurants are closed – and the busy Transport for London network (Tube, Buses, Trains and Trams) all comes to a halt.

With nearly empty streets, it can be a great opportunity to embark on a Self-Guided Walking Tour of London or to rent a bike to pedal around. Additionally, some tourist services – like Thames River Cruises and Hop On Hop Off London Buses are running.

If the weather is agreeable, parks are some of the best places to go on Christmas Day in London. Swing by The Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park on Christmas morning to watch the annual Serpentine Swimming Club race for the Peter Pan Cup or take a walk through Kensington Gardens. At dusk, wander down some of the classic London lanes lit with Christmas lights.

Attending a Christmas service at one of the city’s finest churches – like Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral or St. Martin-in-the-Fields – is another way to spend Christmas Day in London.

Christmas Dinners London

While most restaurants are closed on Christmas Day in London, there are a few exceptions. Some eateries and pubs are open for either lunch or dinner – and several hotels offer special London Christmas meals. In addition to the set menus for dinner, select hotels and restaurants host holiday brunch and Afternoon Tea on Christmas Day.

Travelers looking for the Best Christmas Dinner in London – or any meal out on December 25 – will need to make reservations far in advance!

For an alternative Christmas meal in London, visitors can go to Chinatown, where many restaurants are open on December 25. Another option is Beigel Bake on Brick Lane, a small deli that cranks out meaty sandwiches and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Hotel bars might be a good last-minute option for a drink or light bite to eat for travelers who aren’t able to get a reservation in advance.

Boxing Day Events London

Battersea PowerStation Shopping Mall, Christmas, London

Boxing Day – the day after Christmas, December 26 – is a national holiday in London, England. However, unlike London Christmas Day, on Boxing Day almost all the stores, restaurants, holiday markets, ice skating rinks, museums, theaters and tourist attractions are open.

Typically, public transit is back up and running, albeit on a reduced schedule (but it’s always good to check before making any plans).

One of the best things to do in London on Boxing Day is to go shopping. Many retailers discount items the day after Christmas, so it a great time to score deals.

Watching football (or rather, soccer) is a Boxing Day tradition – as is cozying up in a British pub. Indulging in a boozy Boxing Day Brunch – where many restaurants offer bottomless drinks – is a fun way to spend the leisurely day, as well.

New Year’s Eve in London

London loves to Celebrate New Year’s Eve – and the biggest event is the London New Year’s Eve Fireworks over the River Thames. Tickets are required for the best spots (we particularly like the view from Westminster Bridge), but NYE Thames River cruises offer a unique vantage point and heaps of onboard fun!

Throughout London, restaurants and clubs host parties – from elegant affairs to all night raves. Another excellent way to spend New Year’s in London is at the theater.

London New Year’s Day

Balloons at the New Years Day Parade, London, England, UK

New Year’s Day in London is a national holiday, and the biggest celebration is the London New Year Day Parade. A tradition that has been going strong since 1987, the January 1 London parade is free to attend, but get there early!

New Year’s Day is also one of the last days to enjoy many of the festive holiday London markets, Christmas time performances and illuminated Christmas trees.

Top Travel Tips for Your Christmas London Trip

Santa waiting to cross the street, London at Christmas

Now that you know what to do in London over Christmas, we have a few final travel tips.

Christmas in London Weather

Winter conditions are typically a concern for holiday travelers – and London at Christmas weather will certainly keep you guessing.

Overall, winters in London tend to be mild. Skies are overcast, days are short and precipitation (typically in the form of rain, but sometimes snow) is often predicted. Bottom line, be prepared!

Christmas Transport London

London Xmas Decs on a motorbike, England, UK

London has a robust public transportation network that makes it easy for travelers to get around. That said, December is often a time for transport strikes, so it’s best to stay up to date with any disruptions during your trip.

As we already mentioned, all London public transport is closed on Christmas Day. Want to ride the London Tube Christmas Day? It’s closed. Buses, Overground Trains and London Trams are also parked for the day.

Travelers who want to do a little sightseeing on December 25 can find some London Tourist Christmas Day Buses running. To get around on Christmas Day, we recommend walking, cycling or booking an Uber or FreeNow Taxi.

Where To Stay in London for Christmas

Animal Light Displays, Riverside Christmas Market, London, England, UK

London is sprawling metropolis with thousands of hotels in a range of prices. Deciding where to stay for your London holiday trip can be a big conundrum – but it will likely come down to budget, desired amenities and preferred location.

A room at London’s poshest hotels that are decadently dressed up for the holidays – like The Ritz and The Connaught – will cost upwards of $1,500 per night. Other luxury hotels with fabulous holiday décor – such as The Ned and The Landmark – fetch more than $500 per night.

Budget-conscious travelers, however, can find more affordable hotels in the $150 per night range.

Our best advice for where to stay in London at Christmas is to first search for a hotel within your budget, then choose a hotel based on its location. The accommodation does not need to be city center (as London Christmas attractions are located from one end to the other), but it is best to be close to a Tube station to make getting around easy.

Additionally, popular places to stay in London at Christmas get booked well in advance, so plan ahead and book early .

Along with London Christmas lights, festive window shop (and hotel) displays are something you can’t miss when spending Christmas in London! There are tons to admire (all of which you can view on my Christmas in London map ) but here are a few you’ll see around central London:

  • Fortum & Mason

7. See the Best Christmas Trees

It’s not Christmas in London if you don’t see Christmas trees! There are tons of Christmas trees dotted all across London (which you can check out on my Christmas in London map ) but there are 2 main trees that you can’t miss.

The first Christmas tree is in St Pancras International Station at King’s Cross. Every year, they collaborate with a brand to create the most unique Christmas trees you will ever see. My all-time favourite is the 2023 Christmas tree where they collaborated with Hatchards Bookshop to create a book tree! As a book-loving travel blogger, this made my heart sing!

The second Christmas tree is in Trafalgar Square. It’s in the same area as the Christmas market and has a history behind it! Every year since 1947, London is given a Christmas tree by the city of Oslo in Norway as a token of gratitude for British support to Norway in World War 2. Every Christmas tree gifted is typically a 50 to 60-year-old Norway spruce tree and is amazingly tall, standing over 20 metres!

8. Attend Christmas Carols and Concerts

One beautiful aspect of Christmas is all the Christmas carolling and concerts! Luckily, London is a big city so there are tons of Christmas carols and concerts to see leading up to Christmas. St Paul’s Cathedral and Royal Albert Hall go all out for the Christmas carols and concerts, but there are other churches and performing arts centres that also do beautiful performances!

9. Festive Dining

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Landmark London (@the_landmark_london)

One of my favourite things about Christmas is definitely the food! From turkey to gingerbread men and mulled wine, best believe I will be full by Christmas afternoon! If you’re spending Christmas in London and you fancy festive dining, you can opt for afternoon tea at The Savoy or The Landmark or check out some festive dining menus at The Ritz or The Ivy Chelsea Garden.

10. Watch Festive Theatre Shows, Films + Pantomimes

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Royal Opera House (@royaloperahouse)

It’s not Christmas without Christmas classics like The Nutcracker, Home Alone and Elf! During Christmas in London, there are Christmas theatre shows, films and pantomimes that you can watch and enjoy from mid/late November up until Christmas! The most popular is the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House, which you will have to book very early in advance. But there are also Christmas shows, films and pantomimes that you can watch elsewhere in places like the Barbican, the Dominion Theatre and the London Palladium.

Visiting London at Christmas is one of the most extraordinary experiences you can have. The city transforms into a magical atmosphere of fairy lights, festive spirit, and pop-up bars with boozy hot chocolate and street food. London celebrates the Christmas season better than most other cities in Europe.

The amount of festive things to do in London for Christmas is large enough to tear you off your sofa and away from all those back-to-back Christmas films. Whether you head to Tower Bridge to check out its Christmas market or to one of the ice skating rinks dotted around the city, you’ll have so much fun. London lights up at this time of year with so much eating, drinking, fun, and shopping.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the best attractions and activities to tick off when visiting London at Christmas. From Christmas lights to boozy hot chocolate and shopping for handmade gifts, these are the best things to do in London this December.

1. Covent Garden

London for christmas Covent garden

There’s no better place to celebrate a London Christmas than Covent Garden . Covent Garden is one of the most famed places in the city. It is an ornate shopping and entertainment center in London’s theatrical West End neighborhood. At Christmas, though, this magical place transforms again, hosting a small Christmas market, thousands of festive lights and decorations, and even fake snow flurries between 12 pm and 9 pm each day. The fake snow is on the hour in West Piazza – you won’t miss it.

Covent Garden is one of the best places for undercover Christmas shopping and a reliable white Christmas.

2. Try Mulled Wine

London for christmas mulled wine

Another thing you can’t have a London Christmas without is mulled wine. Luckily, there’s no shortage of this tasty festive drink in the city. You can find delicious mulled wine all over London. The drink is just piping hot red wine with spices like cinnamon. You can find it at pop-up bars and established drinking holes like The Hawk’s Nest in Shepherd’s Bush. Mr Fogg’s Tavern is also a great spot for delicious mulled wine. Wander through the Christmas markets and see if you can spot some to takeaway, or head for a cozy seat inside one of the London pubs.

3. Hogwarts in the Snow

Hogwarts in the Snow at Christmas in London

Everyone knows about London’s Harry Potter studio experience. But did you know it hosts a Christmas special? Hogwarts in the Snow is a way for fans to celebrate Christmas in the wizarding world and runs generously between mid-November and mid-January. There’s everything from Christmas trees in the Great Hall and Yule Ball dance lessons. Of course, you’ll see fake snow everywhere – a definite plus with London’s hit-and-miss white Christmases.

You must book tickets in advance, which costs around $60 per person. And it might be best to book a guided tour that includes transport, because the studio is located north of the city center, and is difficult to reach without a car.

4. winter wonderland in hyde park.

London for christmas Hyde Park market

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is a Christmas destination in its own right. Seriously, this place is enormous. If you want to embrace the Christmas spirit in central London, this is one of the most sought-after and famous festive events to do so at. It transforms Hyde Park into a Bavarian-esque winter wonderland, with huge tents selling Christmas cocktails and German beer, a fairground, food stalls, and rustic pop-up stalls selling handmade gifts and sweet treats. And that’s not to mention its massive ice bar and ice skating rink. Everyone goes to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, but you can see why.

For a bit of festive cheer, you can’t go wrong. Remember to book in advance (directly on the official website to avoid scams), as it sells out quickly.

5. Go Ice Skating

London for christmas Ice skating somerset house

Speaking of festive cheer, what about going ice skating as a standalone activity? Ice rinks are easily one of the most classic festive activities. When in London, you’ll have dozens at your fingertips. There’s the obvious choice of the ice rink in Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. But there’s also the Canary Wharf Ice Rink, JW3 Ice Rink, and even one at the foot of Battersea Power Station. When we say London has lots of ice rinks, we really mean it. Pick one (or two) and get your skates ready.

Enjoying the rinks is one of the best things to do in London this Christmas. Here is a list of all of the rinks in London this season.

6. Watch a Christmas Concert

London for christmas Royal albert hall

You can’t be in London at Christmas and not check out one of the Christmas concerts. Carol singing and Christmas songs are the best ways to get in a festive mood. Many of London’s events are hosted in beautiful venues, like the Royal Albert Hall , which hosts traditional concerts and Christmas carol performances. St. Paul’s Cathedral is another good spot for Christmas carols in festive, atmospheric performances. Our recommendation? Plan to attend at least one concert when celebrating Christmas in London. The stunning venues and traditional experience of carol singing make it the ideal addition to your festive itinerary.

7. Leicester Square

Leicester square in London at Chritmas

Leicester Square is where to be this Christmas in London. Every year, the square is decked with an all-action Christmas market that runs for two months, selling everything from food to mulled wine and offering free entrance. However, we’ll cover Christmas markets in more detail later.

What we really love about Leicester Square are its street performers, which take on extra festive inspiration throughout December and into January. Leicester Square is action-packed and dramatic, and the public space pulls out all the stops during the festive season. If you want free things to do in London this Christmas, visiting Leicester Square should be one of your top choices.

8. Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey in London Christmas Eve

Everyone knows Westminster Abbey – the home of British politics and religion, for better or worse. You can take guided tours through the Abbey throughout the year, admiring its grand architecture. However, what’s really exciting is Westminster Abbey at Christmas.

You can attend numerous free events at Westminster Abbey in December, including the First Eucharist of Christmas Night and even the Christmas Day Holy Communion. There’s even a Royal Carol Service, where HRH hosts the festivities. When it comes to Westminster Abbey, you’ve just got to keep your eye on its calendar. The Abbey really goes to town with Christmas events in December.

9. london bridge.

London Bridge City Christmas Market

London Bridge is an iconic part of the London skyline and embraces an annual Christmas theme. Not only does the famous landmark run a Christmas market, but the London Bridge Rooftop transforms into a magical festive experience for adults. The covered venue whacks out DJ sets, mulled wine, baubles, and Christmas lights – plus a packed menu of festive cocktails and meals. The whole area around London Bridge becomes a hive of activity, so definitely add London Bridge and its surrounding neighborhood to your list of things to do in London this December.

The 1970s bridge is a classic bit of architecture and a real hub for Christmas cheer. You can walk across and admire the festive lights along the banks of the River Thames. Or you can head to the nearby London Bridge Rooftop and Christmas market.

10. Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square in London at Christmas

Trafalgar Square is one of the most famous landmarks in London and attracts millions of tourists each year. At Christmas, though, there’s even more reason to stop by. The square has transformed into a festive masterpiece and currently boasts a 70-foot tree transported from Norway. It is part of a tradition that has been going on since 1947, with Norway gifting London a Christmas tree each year in exchange for Britain’s assistance in World War II. Because of the Norwegian link, it is also typically decorated in Norwegian style with vertical Christmas lights.

You can head to Trafalgar Square, admire the tree, listen to the carol singers, and watch any street performers. The story behind Trafalgar Square’s Christmas tree is wholesome and a poignant reminder of the tragedies of World War II – making visiting one of the most popular things to do in London at Christmas. Besides, what’s a London Christmas without a tree or two?

11. Somerset House

Somerset House Ice Skating in London

Somerset House is a leading attraction in London, and the neoclassical building in central London houses plenty of artistic and cultural exhibits. The most famous of these is the Courtauld Gallery, an art gallery featuring the esteemed piece Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear by the beloved Vincent Van Gogh. It is a brilliant place to visit all year round. Still, there’s something about art galleries at Christmas that is just extra special. Escape from the cold and wet, and enjoy looking at some of the most valuable art in England.

What really makes Somerset House so festive, though, is its vast ice skating rink outside. You can spend a few hours admiring the art, then head out to ice skate and let your hair down.

Guided Tour: Courtauld Gallery Entrance at Somerset House

12. kew gardens.

christmas at Kew Gardens in London

Kew Gardens is a place of extreme beauty on the outskirts of London. The botanical garden comes to life every winter with extra special features, including a festive light trail that wows visitors with elaborate light installations. You walk through the gardens admiring art features like a water fountain exploding with illuminated colors or golden light tunnels. Kew Gardens is a beautiful place to celebrate Christmas, and walking through such creative displays at night is fantastic. There are even vendors selling hot chocolate and piping hot festive foods along the way.

You must book in advance for Kew Gardens as it is – understandably – very popular. However, it runs from November until January, so you can squeeze in there at some point.

13. Watch a Musical or West End Show

West End Show Shakespeares Globe Theatre

West End plays run all year round, but nothing feels more festive than getting dressed up for a West End production in December. The cozy and indulgent vibe is unrivaled. And you can indulge in a champagne and settle into a warm seat while you relax with an evening of entertainment. West End productions run on loops, with regular shows like The Lion King.

However, you can also catch festive film adaptations in other theaters across London, finding play adaptations of classics like Charles Dickens. If you want a play alternative to a Christmas film, this is the best idea for your itinerary. Check out theater performances that coincide with the dates you visit London.

14. Kensington Palace

London for christmas Kensington Palace

If you are visiting London at Christmas, you have to stop by a royal residence or two. Kensington Palace is home to Will and Kate and their children, but part of the palace is open to the public almost daily. Take advantage of this classic tourist attraction and peek at some of the grandest Christmas decorations in the city.

Kensington Palace also opened the Luna Winter Cinema , which shows open-air Christmas films. The whole place comes alive with Christmas cheer. And for a homely – if extremely grand – aesthetic, Kensington Palace is one of the best Christmas versions of classic London attractions.

Guided Tour: Kensington Palace Entrance

15. hampton court.

Celebrating Christmas ar Hampton Court in London

Hampton Court Palace is always a good idea to visit in London. The palace was actually home to Henry the 8th – an extremely notorious figure in UK history. However, it comes even more to life each Christmas, with a giant ice skating rink, stunning decorations, and a Christmas market with over 100 artisan producers. Hampton Court Palace at Christmas is beautiful. There are even carriage rides with shire horses around the palace grounds. And if you catch it on a snow day, just thank your lucky stars. The red brick building looks gorgeous in the snow.

You can buy tickets to Hampton Court Palace online. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and is open from Wednesday until Sunday from 10 am until 4:00 pm.

16. neverland’s winterland.

Neverland winterland igloos

This bar is the best in London if you are an adult but a big kid deep down. Neverland London is where to embrace your inner Peter Pan, with an artificial beach club through summer and a winter wonderland through the festive season. At Christmas, Neverland transforms into an alpine village with igloos, lodges, and even a ski lift that you can dine and drink in.

Neverland is so much fun, especially if you want to enjoy cocktails in style. It also serves food – a bar-restaurant with a difference and one of the best things to do in London at Christmas.

17. Rooftop Views Queen of Hoxton

Queen of Hoxton in London at Christmas

When in London at Christmas, the Queen of Hoxton is a must-visit venue. It is situated in trendy Shoreditch – who doesn’t love this cool London neighborhood – and runs a different Christmas theme each year. In 2023, this is gothic Venice, and its winter rooftop beer and cocktail garden will be suitably decked out.

There’s everything from gondola seating to Italian chandeliers. If you want somewhere to admire the London scenery and have a fancy drink, the Queen of Hoxton is the ideal place to visit. The pub has three levels, plus its stunning rooftop area.

18. Watch or Participate in the Santa Run London

Santa Run London

The Santa Run London is one of the most hilarious things you’ll see. Thousands of contestants dressed in Santa costumes sprint their way through the city center on 5k or 10k routes. The whole event is designed to raise money for charity, and the fit amongst you can take part, while those that prefer to watch can enjoy the spectacle of thousands of Santas running around London.

Participating in or watching the Santa Run London is one of the most unique and funny things to do in the city at Christmas. You won’t see it on the standard tourist list, but that’s half the allure. Embrace the British sense of humor and get involved.

There are a handful of Santa running events in December, but the main one is around Victoria Park.

19. Hyde Park’s Serpentine

Hyde Park's Serpentine christmas swim

If you are brave, you can participate in the Peter Pan Cup – a.k .a. a mad swim around a 100-meter course in Serpentine Lake on Christmas Day- where the winner is awarded a trophy. The quirky attraction draws in the bravest possible contestants. The first race was held in 1864 when the author of  Peter Pan  awarded the winning trophy to the triumphant contestant. This is what gives the race its name.

You can compete or, if you aren’t feeling like freezing water on Christmas Day, watch from the banks of Serpentine Lake.

20. Thames Dinner Cruise

Thames luxury charters dixie queen christmas dinner

A Thames dinner cruise is another London classic. Don’t get us wrong, these run all year round. But you can book exceptional dinner cruise experiences specifically dedicated to celebrating Christmas. These cruises have festive music blaring, party hats, decorations, and traditional Christmas food and drink. This Thames dinner cruise is exactly what you need on a festive London itinerary. And you still get all the joys of sightseeing, with the London landmarks passing by your window.

You can give it a Google or just check the link below to see a great example of Christmas dinner cruises in London.

21. walk down regent street.

London for christmas Walk Regent Street

Walking down Regent Street is one of the best things to do in London at Christmas. The street is famed for high-end shops like Burberry, and in December, you can admire all the decorations in Christmas windows. Regent Street is also where you’ll find some of the most dramatic Christmas lights in the city. As a busy, safe area of London, it is ideal for solo travelers to explore and embrace a festive evening in the city.

Walking down Regent Street is aesthetic and ideal for last-minute shopping. It is a safe and easy activity to squeeze into even the busiest London itineraries. Most shops close at 8 or 9 pm, so we suggest heading there around 5-7 pm.22. Natural History Museum

London for christmas Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is famous. You’ve definitely heard of it before. It might not have struck you as a Christmas attraction, but don’t be fooled; this museum has much on its sleeve regarding festive cheer. The Natural History Museum has Christmas and winter-themed workshops and pop-up activities. Just check its website to see what’s on when you are in London.

There’s also a Christmas at the Museum event on the 22nd of December and Storytelling with Santa sessions from the 11th to the 23rd of December in 2023. The Santa experience includes a gift and a private photo opportunity. If you are traveling with young children, this is an absolute must.

Shopping on Oxford Street at Christmas in London

Nothing beats a Christmas shop. With the excitement, the music, the crowds, and the Christmas lights, it is the most lively time of the year to go shopping. Armed with a long list of present ideas, it is no wonder that people like to splurge so much when shopping in London, which has some of the best shops in Europe. At Christmas, Oxford Street is one of the best places to head. In 2023, it is decorated with 300,000 floating stars strung over the street in scenic zigzags. And you can head down to window shop or grab last-minute presents under the stars.

Oxford Street has extra attractions, like a life-sized snow globe you can go inside, Santa’s Grotto inside John Lewis, and an immersive art experience showcasing the northern lights.

Southbank Centre really puts the culture into celebrating Christmas. So, if you love anything art-related, just check it out. It is full of incredible activities, and you can get really stuck in.

Most events at Southbank are free, and there is no need to book. But you can check out the entry requirements for specific events and an event calendar with a quick Google.

25. Head to London Christmas Markets

London Christmas Markets

We have already touched on Christmas markets while discussing the other best things to do in London at Christmas. However, markets are such a big part of the holiday season that we just  had  to dedicate an entire section to them. These markets typically run for December, but you get the odd early birds running from November and stragglers continuing into January. The best markets in London are:

  • Spitalfields
  • Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland
  • Fleet Street
  • Covent Garden
  • Leicester Square.

You can grab drinks and food from festive takeaway stalls. Or you can shop for artisan and handmade presents or decorations like hand-painted baubles.

26. London Christmas Lights Bus Tour

London for christmas Bus Tour

When visiting London, you have to admire the Christmas lights. Dazzling lights and displays dangling across the streets are one of the most famous types of Christmas decorations and something for the whole family to enjoy. London really goes to town on Christmas lights. The city practically lights up with twinkling, extravagant, festive-themed lighting decorations.

The best way to see as many of London’s Christmas lights as possible is with an open-top bus tour. These buses take you through the center of London, passing the most beautiful lights and giving you the best seat in the house – watching the lights pass from a rooftop perch. The Christmas lights are so close you can almost touch them, and you’ll get to see everything without the chaos of crowds on the street level below. If you are going to do just one thing in London this Christmas, this would be our top recommendation.

Christmas in London is a blast, from pop-up markets to Christmas carols and festive films – here are the best things to do in the capital at Christmas time.

The Christmas season in London is hands down one of our favourite times of the year.

We recon London doesn’t get much better than it does at Christmas. You can’t knock it. Heaps of Christmas markets to explore, parties, pantomimes and festive dinners mean there’s no end to the fun you can have. Not to mention the lights make London look even more beautiful than normal.

On top of all this the city comes alive with festive activities. This year is no exception. The Nutcracker is back at the Royal Opera House. The gardens at Kew are lit up in full glory and one that we’re really excited about, you can spend Christmas Eve exploring Charles Dickens’ house.

Let’s get stuck in…

The Best Things to do to Celebrate Christmas in London

Take a jaunt to one of london’s christmas markets.

is london a good place to visit at christmas

Nothing will put you in the mood for Christmas like wandering around a Christmas market , choosing the fattest bratwursts and sipping on mulled wine. London is chock-full of them too so you’ve got plenty to choose from.

First of all: King’s Cross will be setting up a huge range of activities throughout November and december up at Coal Drops Yard. That means Christmas markets, Club Curling, and an Apres-Ski bar serving hot toddies to warm you right up.

Other returnees include Christmas by the River at London Bridge and Pexmas in Peckham’ s Copeland Park. The latter will run on the 2nd and 3rd of December, where you’ll be able to snap up gifts from their carefully curated range of indie boutiques and makers.

Alternatively Greenwich Christmas Market is another great choice if you want to stray from the centre – pop along to their Lantern Parade on 15th November for a magical evening.

Feast at London’s Christmas Afternoon Teas

Biscuiteers at Christmas

Afternoon tea in London is a year-round must. It’s a well-known truth that nowhere does afternoon teas quite like London – but in the run-up to Christmas, they really step it up a notch.

Of course, you can go for a blow-out festive London afternoon tea somewhere incredibly fancy like Claridges, The Connaught or The Ritz .

The famous Ritz Palm Court is festooned with decorations, transforming it into a winter wonderland – plus the tea itself is pimped by the addition of mince pies, festive cakes and a glass of bubbly.

If you’d rather save a bit of money for presents and the pub but you still want some afternoon tea delights, the Biscuiteers has a (slightly) more wallet-friendly alternative.

You’ll be nibbling your way through a series of biscuits that are so pretty you might even be reluctant to take a bite out of them. That comes in at £55.50 per head.

Follow an Immersive Christmas Lights Hunt

is london a good place to visit at christmas

We think the best part of spending Christmas in London is admiring the capital’s magical lights. And we can’t quite think of a better way to marvel at them than during an immersive scavenger hunt.

Enter CityDays : They’ve curated a stellar Christmas lights hunt that takes you around London’s sparkling streets.

Starting at Oxford Circus and ending near Covent Garden, Clause & Effec t challenges you to a ridiculously fun wild goose chase as you solve an interactive festive adventure.

Better yet, they have a Gourmet version that includes scrumptious food & drinks and some partner food vendors along the way!

There’s a banging 20% discount on food and drinks at recommended pubs too – because nothing screams Christmas more than a festive tipple or three with your mates.

Don’t spend too long in the pub, though; there are clues to crack.

Tickets are £17.50 per person, book yours here

Watch a Film at one of London’s Christmas Winter Cinemas

Luna Kensington

Tempting as it is to bury yourself under covers and watch a few well-chosen festive classics from the safety of your bed, there are better options at hand.

The Luna Winter Cinema at Kensington Palace will be showing Elf, Die Hard (don’t start that old debate about whether it’s a Christmas film – it just is), Home Alone, Love Actually – expect all the classics.

Plus old favourites like the Prince Charles Cinema and the Curzon at One Aldwych add some Christmassy cheer to their lineup of screenings.

The perfect excuse to binge-watch all the Christmas films you could ever want.

Go Fully Festive with the London Transport Museum

London Transport Museum Elizabeth Line

A visit to London Transport Museum might not at first seem to be the most festive of days of the year, but hear us out. The museum is easily one of the most underrated in the capital and is helping visitors get in the festive season in 2023.

They’ve got a host of festive workshops for the whole family running at various dates throughout November and December. Thes include card-making workshops, festive trails around their exhibitions and a poster parade of festive transport advertising across the years.

Drink Christmas Cocktails at London’s Best Bars

Common Decency - Scrooged Sour

Don’t you just love how things that are pretty fabulous anyway get even better in London at Christmas? The humble cocktail being a case in point.

Now clearly, we all love a good cocktail at any time of year – and London’s packed with bars that just so happen to excel at making them ( like ahem, these ones in Shoreditch ).

But at Christmas? The gloves are off.

Callooh Callay are doing some winter tipple with wild Christmas spins – one of which includes toppings of candy canes and (yes) a Christmas hat.

At The Little Yellow Door and its other coloured outlets they’re leaning right into the festive spirit with some wild decorations and a full menu of festive-themed drinks – some of which you can even shake with the bartender…

Looking to up the game a little. Pergola Paddington’s decor is always top-notch. They riff off apres ski style and what could be more wintery than drinking inside a log cabin after all?

Should you fancy truly upping the game to a whole new level The Corinthia London is always a solid favourite of ours at this time of year. They deck out the back courtyard with Christmas lights and serve up a mean boozy hot chocolate. You can’t go wrong.

Attend the Smithfield Market Xmas Meat Auction

is london a good place to visit at christmas

A favourite festive event of ours that’s sadly been missing from the Christmas calendar for the past few years is making a comeback for Xmas 2023. It’s the Smithfield Market Meat Auction, a truly unique spectacle.

It goes back to a time before fridges when you’d buy your turkey as close to Christmas Day as possible and is quite something to see. Auctioneering butchers flog all sorts of meat, calling out prices across a frenetic auction floor of the cash-waving crazed.

Meat is then chucked, yes chucked, at the highest bidder. You can grab some great bargains here too if you’re willing to stake your Christmas Dinner on your skill at an auction.

Tuck Into a Christmas Meal with a Difference

is london a good place to visit at christmas

Cooking on Christmas day can be lovely but it can also be a hassle. There’s all that prep, and navigating it with a glass too many in your system. Don’t even mention the washing up. No wonder then, that some like to opt for a dinner out instead…

If that sounds tempting, The Dorchester’s   never a bad choice, a decadent five-course Christmas menu from a multi-Michelin-starred kitchen? You know that’s going to be a Chritmas to remember.

The new opening Mauro Colagreco at the latest food hotspot in London, The OWO, is also offering a festive tasting menu on Christmas day with some tantalizing bites to say the least. Hello duck and spiced-apple agnolotti.

It’s not just them. Pretty much every restaurant you can name is running some kind of Christmas special. We’ve compiled a full guide to the best of them. You can see them here .

Take a Daring Sky-High Adventure

London in Christmas

Fancy a thrilling new experience for Christmas? Something more than just your run-of-the-mill festive activity? Embracing your adventurous side and scaling the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium might do the trick…

Throughout winter at The Dare Skywalk they’re dishing out warm mugs of hot chocolate, mulled wine and flutes of prosecco alongside some of the best views London has to offer.

How do you reach the top? Strap in with a team of professionals and ascend nearly 50 metres above the pitch to the stadium’s crest. It’s a solid shout for office team building or even as a gift for any would-be thrill seekers you might know.

What’s more, if you really want to up the ante you can take The Edge back to ground level. What’s that you ask? Only a controlled descent to the pitch 42m below and the UK’s first stadium abseil…

If you’re looking to make it a Christmas to remember or perhaps spice up the New Year, you can’t do much better than this.

Take a Self-Guided Tour of the London Christmas Lights

Carnaby Street

Is there anything more magical than Christmas lights in London ? Nah.

Obviously Oxford Street and Regent Street are the biggies – their lights are two of the most-visited Christmas attractions in London.

There really are so many London Christmas lights that it’s best to put on a warm winter coat and walk to as many as possible once it gets dark (who are we kidding, it’s winter, it’s pretty much always dark).

Hit up Oxford Street, Regent’s Street, Carnaby Street, Covent Garden , Seven Dials and Bond Street for starters, then trek out to Kew, where the Christmas lights are something else.

Book Tickets for a Christmas Panto in London

“ Who’s that behind you? ”

Who said that panto is just for kids? Whoever it was, they were incorrect.

Now, we don’t know about you but the costumes, the drama, the cheering, the booing – there’s nothing like a London Christmastime panto to awaken that sense of childish glee that is just so Christmas.

A trip to the panto is what Christmas fun in London is all about. Most of the pantos are back this year (hurray!) – Peter Pan at The Palladium is a biggie, as is Cinderella at Wimbledon Theatre.

Looking for something a little more highbrow? There’s A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic with Owen Teale as Scrooge to check out too.

Unleash Your Inner Child at Hamleys

Hamleys

Hamleys is the oldest and the largest toy shop in the world, so it makes sense that they’re going to put on quite a show for Christmas. It’s always a lovely place to explore at this time of the year. Especially if you’ve got some little ones in tow.

You can always pretend you’re shopping for a family member if you don’t. It’s OK, your secret is safe with us. It’s OK, your secret is safe with us.

Make Like Harry Potter and Visit Hogwarts in the Snow

Hogwarts Castle

Hands up if you start re-watching all of the Harry Potter movies on repeat the moment that it hits December. Just us then? You’re missing out. It’s a real Christmas treat.

You can visit the Harry Potter film set throughout the year, but it takes on an extra-special atmosphere at Christmas for Hogwarts in the Snow .

The Great Hall is decorated for the Yule Ball from Goblet of Fire (you know, the one in the Triwizard Tournament when Hermione turns up with Viktor Krum and shizz goes down big time).

In fact many of the sets are given a festive makeover – and if you’re quick, you can snap up tickets to have dinner in the great hall.

Try Some Christmas Activities in London – Like Ice Skating

Somerset House Ice Rink

You either love or hate ice skating – here at London x London it divides the team, though you should definitely visit one of London’s pop-up rinks if you’re feeling brave enough.

The rink at Alexandra Palace is always beautiful (and what a backdrop), the Queen’s House rink in Greenwich is a stunner too. Special mention for the iconic skating rink at Somerset House while we’re on the subject of gorgeous places to skate.

Canary Wharf’s is another popular option and, if you’re willing to hop on the train, Hampton Court Palace is magical.

Sing Along to Some Festive London Christmas Carols

Christmas Carols

Which is your favourite Christmas carol? Low key O Little Town of Bethlehem? No, let us guess… the all out DRAMA of Hark the Herald Angels Sing – we knew it.

Not all carol concerts are created equal. Obviously having a choir that can sing helps, a magical setting is a big bonus – most important of all? A gung ho crowd willing to bob along with the old classics.

Westminster Abbey has a string of concerts running from the 3rd – 25th of December. Most of the action happens toward the end of the month and it’s all very traditional. We love it.

Go for carols at St Paul’s Cathedral or Westminster Abbey if you want the full-on London Christmas carol experience, they won’t let you down.

Visit the Christmas Tree at Trafalgar Square

Christmas Tree Trafalgar Square

The good people of Norway have been sending us Brits a Christmas tree to put in Trafalgar Square every year since 1947 as a remembrance of British support during WWII.

Let’s face it, Trafalgar Square is one of the places to visit in London during Christmas that seems to slip onto everyone’s festive calendar.

Seeing as they’ve gone to all the effort of sending over a huge Norwegian spruce, it feels like it’s only the polite thing to go and check it out as a small way of saying thanks. The 25 metre-tall tree sits in the middle of the square, festooned with lights and looking ever so Christmassy.

And Check out the Other Christmas Trees Dotted around London

Hays Galleria at Christmas

Believe it or not, Trafalgar Square isn’t the only Christmas tree that brings the spirit of festive cheer in London. Oh ho ho no (sorry, couldn’t resist) – there are gorgeous trees dotted all over the city.

A train station might feel like an unlikely place to start your Christmas tree odyssey but there we are – the tree at St Pancras is always on everyone’s lips when it comes to choosing their favourite – this year it’s made of books…

Luxury hotel Claridges has a more contemporary (but no less wow-worthy) take on things… and if that’s not enough, you should also swing by Hays Galleria (pictured), The Connaught, Somerset House and Wembley Park for more Christmas tree fabulousness.

Head to Christmas at Kew

Christmas at Kew

Kew Gardens is one of London’s prettiest spots all year round but when it comes to Christmas, they really pull out the stops. Christmas at Kew is a dazzling display of lights, sounds and art that just gets better each year.

Over a million lights go into decorating the greenhouses and grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens – it’s nothing short of spectacular. In other words, festive doesn’t even begin to cover it – this place is magical.

Enjoy a Christmas Concert

Christmas Concert at The Barbican

Much as a carol concert is Christmassier than eating mince pies and dancing badly in ugly jumpers, there’s a whole world more to explore when it comes to festive music.

Hunting out the city’s best Christmas concerts has become one of our favourite things to do during the Christmas season in London.

The Royal Albert Hall is the natural place to start. They’ve been celebrating Christmas for quite a long time now and have really worked out how to totally nail it (clue: it includes lotsa carols, swing Christmas concerts and Gospel Messiah).

Another cool spot and long-time favourite, The Barbican has a couple of Christmassy events to throw in the mix, including a choral Christmas concert.

Wrap Up Warm and Go for a Winter Walk around a Stately Home

is london a good place to visit at christmas

London is dotted with gorgeous stately homes – many open to the public. They’re interesting enough the rest of the year-round but many take Christmas as their time to shine (literally – there are often a LOT of fairy lights involved).

Chiswick House , for one, will be hosting Christmas events where you can wend your way through the 18th-century stately home gardens and scoff mince pies as the Rock Choir sings. It’s all slightly ethereal and rather wonderful.

Eltham Palace will also be all lit up. The stunning structure looks nothing less than spectacular under the influence of a Christmas display and a few glasses of mulled wine.

Kenwood House too will also be lit up this year from December up to January. They’ve got award-winning light choreographers in for the job so you can guarantee it’s going to look the part.

Spend an Evening at Winter Wonderland

is london a good place to visit at christmas

Love it or hate it, Winter Wonderland is the ultimate festive hotspot in London.

Filled with overpriced drinks, huge queues, and the sounds of crying children in the air, we understand that it’s very much a Marmite situation, but there’s also nowhere as iconic to spend an evening.

Fairground rides, the smell of mulled wine, and the iconic ice bar, this is one of the best Christmas things to do in London. Grab yourself a sausage and get merry!

You’ll need to book tickets in advance , with many slots available for free. Though, you’ll need to shell out a fiver if you want to visit during weekends. Well worth it, we think.

Head to Westfield for Winter Celebrations

Westfield Christmas

Westfield is giving Winter Wonderland a run for its money this year when it comes to festivities – the two locations (Stratford and White City) will be a hub for all things Xmas in London.

From the 17th of November, the shopping centres will be completely festooned in Christmas gear – get your cameras at the ready, your Insta feed will thank you.

Westfield London will be home to a gargantuan 1000m 2 outdoor Ice Rink, and there’s even a breakfast with Santa option for those looking to treat their little ones.

Phantom Peak’s Wintermas Extravaganza

Even if you have already visited Phantom Peak in Canada Water, you might want to book yourself another ticket. Phantom Peak’s festive season looks set to be a highlight of London at Christmas 2023.

If you’ve not been yet, Phantom Peak is an immersive experience that sees you thrown into a Victoriana-esque village, meeting with characters and completing quests.

This time, step into the immersive steampunk world – which has been given a suitably festive makeover – and enjoy brand new trails, secrets, and an uber-cool winter grotto. Oh, and there’ll be plenty of treats to devour after you’ve completed your quests. What’s not to love?

Catch A Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert

What could be more wholesome than A Muppet Christmas Carol? It’s up there with the best of the festive season’s musical offerings. The show is touring the UK and has a one-night-only spot at The Apollo on December 3rd.

The Disney classic will play on the big screen, as a live orchestra helps to create the ultimate Christmas atmosphere. Tickets for this sells out fast so make sure you’re quick to get in there.

Dine at an Immersive Screening of Home Alone

is london a good place to visit at christmas

You might have seen us writing about Taste Film in our guides before. We’re big fans. They do a very inventive cinema/dining experience. That being a screening of a movie that has plenty of food-related scenes in it, and then they curate a menu that reflects what’s being eaten on screen.

The result: you eat what the characters eat. They’ve done Pulp Fiction, The Devil Wears Prada and heaps more. Now it’s time for a Christmas edition. They’ve picked the all-time classic Home Alone.

Screenings take place at various weekends throughout December. The 2nd – 4th, 9th – 11th and 16th – 18th at The Refinery City Point by Drake & Morgan.

See the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House

Royal Opera House

Another festive performance that always leaves a big mark in our London calendar is the Royal Opera House’s performance of the Nutcracker. The show is about as magical as it comes.

Scored by the great Tchaikovsky and performed by an incredibly talented team of dancers, the ballet will transport you to a magical winter wonderland through the story of Clara and her magical Christmas Eve adventure to the Kingdom of Sweets.

Ride a Horse and Carriage Through Richmond Park

Richmond Park

There’s always a charm to the idea of riding in a horse-drawn carriage, but around wintertime, that charm seems to up itself to new levels. If you’ve got the itch to play prince and princess you can do so around Richmond.

Every year for Christmas Royal Parks offers winter rides through Richmond Park . The hour-long experience involves some rather majestic shire horses, mince pies and mulled wine.

Just in case you weren’t already aware, it is Richmond Park that also boasts herds of wild deer – ten points if you can spot Rudolf among them.

Tour London’s Christmas Film Locations

Paddington Bear

London being so magical at Christmas time has captured the imagination of filmmakers for generations. Not surprisingly then, you can go and visit many of the places that have featured in their festive classics.

From the mews of Love Actually to the Notting Hill hangouts of Paddington Bear, and not forgetting the pub from Bridget Jones’ Dairy, there’s heaps to see. Taking a tour of the sites also makes for a great way to get into the Christmas spirit.

We’ve written a guide to exploring all of London’s Christmas filming locations so you can check them out for yourself. Find it in the link below.

Check Out the Nine Elms Advent Calendar

Each year for Christmas Nine Elms does its very own unique bit of festive decorating, turning vast swathes of the neighbourhood into an interactive advent calendar.

To do that the whole community gets involved, offering up shop windows and public spaces for a 24-night-long string of festive events. From the 1st – 24th of December each location unveils a new window to the calendar with the addition of Christmas-themed activities.

Those activities range from carol singing to mulled wine swigging. Making it down to even a few of these events is a great way to get excited in the countdown to the big day. Nine Elms, we have to give it to you: you know how to do it right.

See the Lights (and Grab a Pint) at The Churchill Arms

Churchill Arms Kensington

There’s one place we migrate to annually at around this time of year, and that’s the Churchill Arms in Chelsea . The pub is one of the most eccentric in London any given day of the year but come Christmas time, they really push the boat out.

The usually floral facade of the building (that’s genuinely so covered in flowers that there’s more of them than brickwork) is adorned with such an abundance of Christmas lights that we worry about the power grid for west London going down.

It’s a marvel to look at, and probably the only wintertime activity that requires sunglasses. Once you’re done admiring the outside, head in for a nice pint in the cosy inside. It’s the ultimate Christmas pub experience.

Hear Some Creepy Christmas Ghost Stories

It’s not all Christmas cheer in London – there’s plenty of Christmas fear going around too. No, we’re not talking about the panic of choosing the right presents for your loved ones. We’re talking about this spooky event at The Electric Elephant Cafe .

They’ve teamed up with South East London Folklore Society for an evening of storytelling. The subject? The ghosts and ghouls of London and their grizzly pasts. The event is totally free to attend (should you be brave enough) and is a guaranteed bit of fun for anyone looking to buck the usual cuddly Christmas trends.

Explore Dickens’ House on Christmas Eve

Charles Dickens’ House

Who could be more entwined with the way the British view Christmas than the great Charles Dickens? His books have shaped the imaginations of children for generations, and probably fewer get as much attention as A Christmas Carol – the creepy tale of the reckoning of Scrooge and the ghost of Christmas past.

This year you can get into the swing of things with a Christmas Eve trip to the house this very author lived in. These days it’s been turned into an excellent museum dedicated to the power of his storytelling and picking apart the London that shaped the focus of his writing.

They’ve got adaptations of A Christmas Carol and The Muppet Christmas Carol playing in what they’re calling ‘the smallest theatre in the world’. On top of that and exploring the home of one of Britain’s most important authors, they’ll also be handing out mince pies and mulled wine to every guest.

Looks like they’ve not fallen into the same traps as Scrooge then…

Meet Santa on a Vintage Steam Train

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit from Santa. This year (before he’s off on his worldwide prezzie delivery tour) you can catch him on the Santa Steam Express .

It’s easily one of the most enchanting Christmas things to do in London. You’ll be embarking on a 1.5-hour train ride on an absolutely delightful vintage steam train. The journey takes you around London as Santa comes along and dishes out presents to all the passengers.

If you’ve got some little ones in your family this is likely going to blow their mind. We’re not going to lie, as fully-grown adults, we’re totally sold on the magic of this thing too.

Journeys run at various times throughout the day on the 15th, 18th and 21st of December. Tickets can be booked for them all below, but you’ll want to act fast – it’s obviously extremely popular and there are only a limited number of seats.

Things to Do in London At Christmas Time

Celebrate the holidays in true British fashion.

christmas market

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

From Christmas markets and ice skating to festive afternoon tea, London is the perfect place to spend your holiday vacation. Below, a few festive ideas to add to your itinerary.

Admire the Christmas Trees and Lights

Christmas tree in Trafalger Square at dusk

To say London embraces holiday decor is quite the understatement. In particular, the English capital knows how to decorate a Christmas tree. Head to Trafalgar Square to see a massive spruce all decked out in lights, an annual gift from Norway given every year since 1947.

Landmark, Sky, Architecture, Lighting, Christmas lights, Tree, Christmas decoration, Christmas eve, World, Christmas,

Other notable spots to see lights include Oxford Street, Carnaby Street, Covent Garden, Regent Street, and the South Bank.

Stay Somewhere Festive

london penthouse

Just around the corner from Trafalgar Square and Whitehall, Corinthia London is the coziest Christmas spot for those who like to be in the center of everything on the outside of the hotel, but away from it all as soon as they step inside. The hotel’s restaurant and library area is decked out as a lush alpine winter garden and hosting festive high tea and celebratory Christmas and New Year’s Eve dinners. Recover from all the revelry the next day at the ESPA Life spa, which offers Dr. Barbara Sturm facials, relaxation pools, and massages. For a truly memorable holiday, book one of the seven penthouses for a magical escape replete with a fireplace, Christmas tree, access to a private wine collection, and personal butler.

onefinestay

For those traveling with a large family or who are planning to stay for several weeks (take advantage of remote work!) onefinestay , which offers luxury rental apartments and homes, is getting extra cheery by setting up fully decorated Christmas trees, garlands, and tablescapes by London florists Hayford & Rhodes upon request as well as delivering another fun British tradition: Christmas hampers.

Go Ice Skating

Building, Human settlement, City, Public space, Architecture, Town square, Plaza, Tourism, Recreation, Tourist attraction,

There’s no more British a way to embrace the cold weather than by lacing up your skates, and hitting Somerset House’s open-air rink ( above ). Zoom around the courtyard (or scoot along the edge, holding onto the rail—hey! We don’t judge) all while enjoying the beautiful Christmas tree. Then, warm up with a cocktail and a view of the ice in the Skate Lounge or pop in the Fortnum's Christmas Arcade to sneak in a little holiday shopping. Consider yourself a night owl? New last year was a program called "Skate Lates," which brought special music guests to the rink in the evenings.

Skating is also available at Hampton Court Palace and at the Natural History Museum .

Or Try Curling at King's Cross

Kings Cross is a delightful newly renovated section of London that is home to loads of shops, restaurants, and activations for Christmas. This winter book a 45-minute curling session (which comes with its own Club Curling Bar for fuel), then stroll over to C oal Drops Yard for dinner at British designer Tom Dixon’s Coal Office , which offers up Mediterranean shared plates in a buzzy, yet relaxed setting created by Chef Assaf Granit—make sure to book in advance, it is a local favorite.

Shop for Gifts

Whether you prefer strolling through pop-up holiday bazaars or spending a full day at Harrod’s (complete with a trip to see Father Christmas), this shopping capital has something for everyone on your list. We recommend making a trip to Liberty London for beautiful accessories in the line’s signature prints, the latest beauty must-haves, and a gorgeous selection of stationery. Arket next door is a go-to for on-trend staples; their denim is perfect for gifting yourself. Then slide over to Savile Road and get the men in your life monogrammed handkerchiefs. If you’re searching for the perfect fashion-forward present, head to Dover Street Market , for wares from innovative brands like Comme des Garçons, Raf Simons, Erdem, and Thom Browne among many, many others.

Need more shopping ideas? Here's our complete guide to the best Christmas markets in London .

Partake in Afternoon Tea

A full tea service is ideal any afternoon in London (We recommend making a reservation the first day you land, to help beat jetlag), but it’s a particularly nice way to warm up when it’s chilly outside. Kick off the holiday season at Sketch , whose pink interiors are Instagram-worthy any time of year, but at Christmas has been transformed into the Glade, a lovely wintry forest. For a classic experience, indulge at Fortnum & Mason . If hot chocolate is more your speed, stop by Knoops , a small chain of hot chocolate cafes where you order your drink with your desired percentage of cocoa, from 28 to 100 percent.

Visit Hogwarts in the Snow.

For fans of the Harry Potter series, the Warner Brothers Studio Tour really comes to life in the wintertime. In the weeks before the holidays, the attraction is transformed to include Christmas trees lining the Great Hall, and a festive-looking Gryffindor common room.

Attend Christmas Services

st pauls cathedral christmas

If going to church is part of your annual holiday tradition, St. Paul’s Cathedral is just one of many offering services.

Eat British Staples… and Then Try Omakase

beaverbrook

Cold weather is the best time of year to enjoy a Sunday roast and sticky toffee pudding, not to mention a pint or two. Thomas Cubitt in Belgravia deliveries all of that and then some, you’ll never dismiss traditional British meals again. Then, move onto London’s other classic cuisine: Indian. Dishoom is an all-around favorite, with Bombay comfort food and live jazz music; they don’t take reservations so stop by in the late afternoon to put your name down (be prepared for a two-hour wait) while you have a cocktail or go shopping nearby. As a grand finale, treat yourself to omakase at the Beaverbrook Townhouse Fuji Grill . Omakase chef Goemon Ishikawa has curated a two-hour experience with a seasonal menu that is perfectly on point. And, unlike other Japanese dining experiences, it is topped off with dessert from Beaverbrook’s pastry chef. It is a memorable respite from fish and chips.

Check out the Peter Pan Cup

One of London’s most unique holiday rituals is the annual Peter Pan Cup, where members of the Serpentine Swimming Club jump into lake in Hyde Park for an icy Christmas Day race. Unfortunately (...or fortunately depending on your perspective), visitors can’t partake in the festivities, but it’s almost more fun to bundle up and watch the event.

Take a Weekend Trip

coworth park

If your itinerary allows, Coworth Park is an excursion well-worth undertaking. Located about an hour’s drive outside London (just under two hours by train), the former 18 th century manor home in Ascot is now a Dorchester hotel, nestled amidst world-class polo fields (Prince William and Harry are regulars). Book the newly renovated North Lodge on the property—the former gatekeeper’s cottage turned three-bedroom residence is ideal for large families or friends and absolutely perfect for those traveling with children (make sure to book them an equestrian lesson, Coworth has great ponies for littles, and horses for yourself). Don’t skip the toffee pudding on Sundays at the Michelin-starred restaurant or chips (fries) and a martini at their more casual restaurant, the Barn.

the dorchester collection coworth park

At this point you are probably bursting, but it is worth mentioning that all of Coworth Park's chocolate is handmade on the premises. Work it off with a swim at the spa, surrounded by amethyst crystals, a long stroll around the property (see if you can spy the home where John Lennon wrote and filmed the music video for Imagine ), or that aforementioned horse ride. If you have trouble summoning up the motivation to return to London, we don’t blame you.

Rumor has it, he'll be making appearances at both Royal Albert Hall and the Museum of London .

12 best things to do in London at Christmas

‘tis the season to enjoy the festivities – and there’s no better place to experience christmas cheer than london.

is london a good place to visit at christmas

L ondon shines bright during the festive season, from the warm glow of the lights on the huge tree in Trafalgar Square to the sequin-filled window displays in Oxford Street. Head to the capital to shop for stocking fillers in some of the world’s best department stores, glug mulled wine as you wander along the South Bank, and dine in an igloo to get in the spirit. Here’s our pick of the best things to do in London at Christmas.

Main photo: the Magical Ice Kingdom at Winter Wonderland

1. Get your skates on

The most festive pick of the bunch is Somerset House — the Georgian building makes the perfect backdrop for a magical night on the ice. If you fall down, pick yourself up afterwards with a steaming cup of hot chocolate from the Hotel Chocolat truck, or a refreshing glass of fizz provided by Moët & Chandon at the skate lounge. Book a table at Chalet Suisse by Jimmy Garcia to finish your night with fondue and raclette.

2. Take a festive bus tour with mulled wine

See the best of London’s lights and festive window displays by hopping on one of Tootbus’ Christmas Lights hour-long open-top bus tours through the capital’s best shopping streets to the soundtrack of classic Christmas hits. Kick things up a notch with the Tootbus Bar Bus experience, which serves mulled wine and Bailey’s hot chocolate on board.

3. Have a retro Christmas at Miracle by Henrietta

No decade screams Christmas quite like the Seventies. It’s when some of the season’s biggest soundtracks dropped – think Elton’s Step into Christmas and Lonely this Christmas by Mud – and tinsel-covered trees and tassels were bang on trend. Get your fill of both at Miracle by Henrietta, a gloriously over-the-top cocktail bar inspired by a seventies home at Yuletide where you can sip festive-themed drinks served in dinosaur and santa-shaped mugs underneath a ceiling covered in ultra-kitsch decorations. The bar is lit by the face of a giant Santa and manned by a set of cocktail-shaking elves. Make a night of it with a stay at the equally retro Henrietta Hotel with art-deco bathrooms and beds backed by quirky headboards.

4. See the city’s best Christmas light displays

If spectacular light displays don’t get you feeling festive, then nothing will. Recharge your Christmas spirit with a stroll through the city’s best displays in Carnaby Street and Marylebone and pair it with some late-night Christmas shopping; most shops stay open until 9pm on Oxford Street.

Kingston Christmas Market (Alamy)

5. Find stocking fillers at Kingston Christmas Market

Kingston’s Ancient Market Place has been transformed into a European-style Christmas market where wooden huts lining its streets are filled with food, drink, gifts and festive cheer. Until December 24, you can sip pints of German beer and eat bratwurst while you watch live music; there are shows every day so check the schedule beforehand to get a front-row seat for your favourite local artists.

6. Stroll along the South Bank

The Winter Festival along the South Bank has pop-up bars, Christmas market huts, food stalls and art against a backdrop of the Thames. Stop at Fire and Fromage for a glass of mulled wine, all-you-can-eat raclette, charcuterie and s’mores for £35pp while keeping cosy around the wood-burning fires. There’s also the option to book an igloo (groups of up to ten welcome, minimum spend £650 at lunch or dinner).

Duck & Waffle

7. Dine above the city

Duck & Waffle, on the 40th floor of the Salesforce Tower in the City, has always had magical views; but this year’s winter wonderland theme elevates the Christmas dining experience. Bask in the snowscape as you sip a Waffle on the Rocks cocktail and save space for a sticky toffee waffle. Come after dark to take in the sparkling City skyline.

8. Sing carols in Trafalgar Square

The arrival of the great Norwegian spruce at Trafalgar Square signals the real start of Christmas for most Londoners. Crowds from across the UK come to admire it and the square becomes the perfect spot to meet with friends, listen to carols and be merry. Carol singing takes place until December 24 and runs from 2pm to 9pm, so take a look at the programme online to see what takes your fancy. Groups can book one hour slots to assemble at the base of the Christmas tree and fill the square with the sounds of their festive cheer.

9. Spot deer in Richmond Park

They may not be reindeer, but the red and fallow deer in Richmond Park are a close second so wrap up your little ones and explore (some of) its 2,360 acres on foot. The deer were introduced for hunting in 1637, and the park is now a safe haven for the 600 of them roaming around the grassland. Richmond is connected by National Rail and the District line, and then it’s a brisk walk to the park itself — or there’s free car parking around the park.

10. Get on Santa’s nice list at Hamleys

Santa’s grotto is open for business on the third floor of Hamleys, the largest toy shop in the world. Rumour has it that those on the good list will take home a personalised gift — make sure you let the elves know your family’s names and your favourite things to do beforehand. You have to pre-book the grotto, and one ticket allows access for groups of three people, including one adult.

Free workshops in Fleet Street will teach participants how to make Christmas wreaths (Alamy)

11. Create festive freebies on Fleet Street

There’s no sign of Scrooge on Fleet Street this Christmas. Instead, you can enjoy 12 days of free workshops which take place until December 14. Participants can create natural wreaths with terrarium specialists Jar and Fern and homemade Christmas gin with the City of London Distillery. There’s also a flurry of carol concerts, poetry performances and markets popping up alongside a 20-foot tree and plenty of cosy spots to glug a mulled wine or two. Pull up a stool at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, one of London’s oldest boozers and a favourite of Charles Dickens, or tuck into a charcuterie board at the former favourite of journalists, El Vino.

Coppa Club

12. Get cosy inside an igloo

Dine under the stars at Coppa Club, which has heated igloos where you’ll be peering out at the lights on the South Bank and snapping photos against a backdrop of Tower Bridge and the Shard. Each is decked out with rich merlot reds and moss greens, as well as gorgeous dried foliage hanging from above. The festive menu will get you in the Christmas spirit, too — save space for the spiced cranberry and white chocolate cheesecake.

The pub used to be called ‘church on the hill’, receiving its current name after the Second World War.

It has a Winston Churchill interior theme and claims to be the first London pub with a Thai restaurant.

14. Wander around Covent Garden

pink-car-parked-up-against-pavement-with-christmas-tree-on-top-of-it-in-covent-garden

Another London landmark stuns as it lights up for the Christmas season. Covent Garden dazzles as the giant baubles and lights are hung and powered up.

As well as the decorations, it’s home to one of London’s biggest Christmas trees, which tops out at a whopping sixty feet tall.

Keeping in line with royalty, the Christmas tree comes from the same farm that the Queen’s family gets their trees from.

It also wins brownie points for being sustainable, as they plant three trees for every tree cut down!

And at the end of the festive season, they recycle the tree to make woodchips.

Over 30,000 lights and giant baubles are hung on the tree by a team of sixty, taking just over 300 hours to get the decorations sorted!

Good luck trying to capture this masterpiece.

21. Gawp at the Christmas lights

oxford-street-oxford-circus-christmas-lights-on-busy-london-street-things-to-do-in-london-at-christmas

With a stunning array of light displays, London arguably holds some of the best installations that Britain has to offer.

One of the best things to do in London at Christmas is to simply gawp at all the Christmas lights!

Here are some of our favourites:

Oxford Street

One of the best streets that you can find these impressive bursts of sparkle is Oxford Street , London’s most famous lights and for good reason!

This long street displays over 1700 installations to ogle over, not to mention being an ideal place to do some Christmas shopping.

Regent Street

Another one to visit is Regent Street which holds a star-studded switch-on event.

The street goes traffic-free for the evening and nearby shops also hold events so it’s worth keeping an eye out for details about the performers.

One of the coolest shopping areas, Carnaby , lines the street with lots of boutiques.

Each year they team up with a charity to bring awareness to the cause they support.

In the past, they have partnered with Choose Love.

They immersed the street with pink neon lightboxes with positive words on each box in the hope that it would bring some joy and encourage people to be kind to one another.

Bond Street

Finally, Bond Street , London’s luxury shopping district, is known for its legendary peacock-inspired Christmas lights.

Rumour has it that there are around 250,000 individual lights that make up the display.

You may be wondering why they chose a peacock theme.

Well, these twinkling lights are inspired by Bond Street’s vibrant past.

In the late 18 th century, young men known as ‘the bond street loungers’, visited the area in overly flamboyant attire.

They soon became the early fashionistas or ‘peacocks’ of their day, inspiring the gorgeous peacock lights we see today.

The extravagant window displays of the designer stores are also worth a look at!

So there you have it – 21 of the best things to do in London at Christmas!

Hopefully, this post has inspired you to indulge in London’s festivities.

There’s truly nothing more magical than spending Christmas in London so I know you’ll have an incredible time.

Christmas In London: Best Things To Do

Posted on Last updated: June 7, 2021

London is a fantastic place to visit at Christmas time. I’m a little biased because I live in London and I love the city at any time of year, but at Christmas it becomes especially magical.

The city lights up with Christmas decorations and it comes alive with festive markets. Christmas in London actually starts pretty early, with some of the ice-skating rinks and Christmas markets opening up as early as 1 st November.

Which is great, because it means you have plenty of time to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere in London!

Having lived in London for seven years means I tried quite a lot of all the different festive season activities around.

There are loads of Christmassy things to do in London, but if you’re only visiting for a short time you won’t be able to see them all.

In this post I’ve listed all of my personal favourite things to do in London at Christmas, including the best Christmas markets, ice skating rinks, activities, and some practical tips from a Londoner about getting around the city during the busy festive season!

Before you go, have you booked your London hotel already? If not, check out my Londoners guide to the best areas to stay in London

10 best Christmas activities to do in London

Visit winter wonderland.

Winter Wonderland is possible the ultimate Christmas in London activity, and one of the most Christmassy places that you can imagine.

It’s a huge Christmas market located in Hyde Park, with all sorts of food and drinks stalls, fun fair rides, ice-skating, Christmas gifts and Christmas decorations everywhere.

There’s something for everyone and it’s guaranteed to get you in the Christmas mood! Winter Wonderland usually gets set up around mid-November, and is around until the start of January.

It’s also very very busy. If you want to avoid the crowds go during the week in the early afternoon, that way you can enjoy it for a while without crowds and wait for the decorations to light the place up once the sun goes down.

Also, if you can only visit on the weekends or after work when it’s busy, make sure to get off the tube at Green Park instead of Hyde Park Corner.

You’ll walk a little bit longer but trust me, it will be much more pleasant than the mass of people that will be trying to squeeze past you at Hyde Park Corner.

Go ice skating at the Natural History Museum

At Christmas time you will find that ice-skating rinks pop up everywhere around London. There are quite a few in very iconic spots, but my personal favourite is the one at the Natural History Museum.

It usually has a huge Christmas tree in the middle and pretty Christmas lights on the trees everywhere around it.

I used to do ice-skating as a kid and I get pretty competitive about it, I love big ice rinks but since these are a bit lacking in London, the best one you can go to is the Natural History Museum one.

It’s fairly big compared to some of its fellow pop ups around London, and the atmosphere is super festive.

I also personally love the Natural History Museum (can’t help it, they have dinosaurs!) so I like making a trip out of it and visiting both while I’m in the area.

If you go during the day, or early in the Christmas season (they set it up mid November!) it won’t be too busy either which will make it more fun. This is also one of the  best photo spots in London !

See the Christmas decorations in & around Oxford Street

At Christmas they put up decorations and fairy lights everywhere around London. The vast majority of the main streets will have decorations, but there are a couple that have noteworthy Christmas lights up.

My personal favourites are around Oxford Street, Mayfair and Carnaby Street area.

Carnaby Street is always really coloured as it is, but at Christmas they take things up a notch. In Mayfair you will also find the famous Christmas tree of the Annabels gentleman club.

You can’t go inside without being a member but it’s close to Oxford Street so you can easily visit it and snap some photos from outside while visiting the area.

You can pair a visit to this part of London with some serious Christmas shopping, whatever you’re looking for you’re very likely to find it on Oxford Street (just make sure to visit during the week, weekends on Oxford Street can be mental)!

Visit Southbank Christmas Market

I love  street food markets in London . I love them even more when they are Christmas themed. Quite a few street markets pop up in London during the festive season, but my personal favourite is the Southbank one.

It’s located just under the London Eye and along the river, which is a lovely area to visit regardless of the market or not.

They always have amazing food, so you can get food or hot chocolate (or mulled wine, if that’s more your thing) and sip it while watching the sunset over Westminster.

They have great food but also some nice Christmassy souvenirs if you want to buy some presents. Whatever time of the year you’re visiting, Southank is without a doubt one of the   best things to do in South East London with kids .

Pair ice-skating at South Bank with a visit to the London Eye!

I’ve already told you that the Natural History Museum ice rink is my favourite, but there is another one that despite being quite small, is worthy of featuring in this London Christmas bucket list.

Every year they set up a small ice-skating rink just under the London Eye.

Ice-skating at the rink just under the London Eye

Ice-skating at the rink just under the London Eye

It’s not as big or heavily decorated as some of the others, but when you’re located right under the London Eye, with a view of Westminster and Big Ben in the background, you can afford to have less fairy lights up.

If you buy them together you can also get a discounted ticket to the London Eye. It’s the perfect opportunity to pair a typical Christmas activity with an iconic London sightseeing one!

I did it a few years ago on a Saturday morning and was surprised to find that they were both fairly crowd free.

Shop at Covent Garden

Covent Garden is a pretty popular part of London regardless of the time of year, but at Christmas time especially, it lights up with so many decorations that you can’t help but love it.

There will usually be huge decorations above the main market area, and a huge Christmas tree in the square just outside the Apple Market and in front of St Paul’s Church Covent Garden.

It’s a very touristy part of London, but beautiful nonetheless.

You can wander around the Apple Market and have some food there, there are lots of options both for on the go snacks and sit down meals, and then head over to the market to shop for some affordable souvenirs and Christmas gifts.

Go to Leicester Square Christmas market

Another Christmas market in London that I love is the one in Leicester Square. It’s not as big and grand as the others, but it’s exactly why I enjoy it so much.

After the chaos of Winter Wonderland, it’s nice to visit a more normal sized market, where you can wander around without having to queue to enter or being pushed around by others.

At the end of the day, most of the food and gift stalls are the same anyway. I also like the location of it.

Leicester Square is pretty much as central as it gets in London, so you can easily pair a visit to Leicester Square Christmas market with other sightseeing activities around London.

Eat a Christmas roast in a pub!

All the Christmas markets listed above offer loads of tasty Christmassy street food options (hello mulled wine and huge cinnamon buns) but if you’re looking to sit down for a Christmassy meal, you should definitely head to a typical English pub.

I’m not usually a fan of pub food, but when it comes to Christmas roast, I’m easily swayed.

Christmas roast usually consists of roast turkey with stuffing, potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts, parsnips and pigs in blankets (little sausages wrapped in bacon), all covered with a healthy serving of gravy.

Pretty much all pubs will offer a Christmas meal menu with all the above, dessert and drinks. Prices usually range around £20 to £40 per person, but it massively depends on what part of London the pub is and how fancy it is.

Do a festive afternoon tea bus tour

Roast might be the ultimate English Christmas dining experience, but there is another very traditional British meal you have to try while you’re in London at Christmas; afternoon tea.

Afternoon tea is a very typical British meal, where you have tea paired with sandwiches, scones and cakes.

I’ve done a few afternoon teas around London but my favourite is the B Bakery afternoon tea bus tour , since it’s the perfect opportunity to pair a lovely dining experience with some sightseeing.

At Christmas time they have special afternoon tea Christmas menus and the bus will all be decorated with Christmas lights.

Getting ready for our afternoon tea bus tour in London

Afternoon tea bus tour in London – very touristy but also very cool!

Try all the Christmas street food!

You’ve had a traditional English roast dinner, you’ve had a unique afternoon tea bus tour experience, but what about street food?

When you visit the Christmas markets I’ve listed above (or others) make sure to visit on an empty stomach! Amongst all the fun fair rides and Christmas souvenirs you will find plenty of Christmas themed street food.

They tend to be a bit over priced (it is London after all) but are usually really good!

You can usually find all sorts of food like poffertjes (small Dutch pancakes), cinnamon rolls, pretzels, hot dogs and burgers, and lots of drinks choices like beer, mulled wine and hot chocolates!

The abundance of Christmas street food is without a doubt one of the highlights of visiting Europe and especially London in winter .

Where to stay during Christmas in London

A lot of these Christmas activities are spread out across different areas of London, there isn’t really one specific area that is better than others if you want to enjoy Christmas in London.

Public transport is pretty good in London as well so it’s easy to travel around. More than the area that you choose to stay in, make sure you are close to a tube station, so that you’re well connected to everywhere you want to go.

My personal favourite area to stay in London is Angel .

I lived there for three years and I love it because it’s a very central area with lots of bars, shops and restaurants, but it’s still off the main tourist radar, so you’ll only find locals wandering around and it’s not as busy as other parts of central London.

When my parents came to visit they stayed at the Hilton in Angel and loved their stay there.

How to get around London at Christmas time

Getting around London as a tourist can be challenging at any time of year, but especially so at Christmas time. Which is why my top tip, weather permitting, is to walk everywhere!

London is a big city but all the key attractions are close to each other, and you can easily visit them on foot.

Especially at Christmas time walking around London is part of the experience, as you’ll be able to enjoy all the fabulous Christmas decorations.

If the weather is too bad for walking then stick to the tube or buses, public transport is really good and will get you everywhere you need to go.

Visiting London in December – What to Expect

The weather in London in December is mild, but it’s also chilly and humid. Expect cold temperatures, rain every 3 days on average. The weather can also change very rapidly, but there are few extremes in the UK.

  • Average high: 9°C / 48°F
  • Average low: 5°C / 41°F
  • Average days of rain: 10

So what is London like in December, weather-wise? Depending on where you come from, you may well think of the UK as a country with a cold and wet climate. In fact the UK does have a humid climate, so it can rain quite a lot.

That’s the bad news. The good news, though, is that the British climate can also be described as temperate – meaning mild. There are generally no extremes here, and major storms are rare. You can expect to experience no earthquakes or wind events like hurricanes and tornadoes in London. Though flash flooding can happen every now and then.

When planning places to go in London in December, you can expect it to be cold and/or wet. So do pack warm and waterproof items: but more on that later. The other thing to know is that the UK has a maritime climate, which means that the weather can, and does, change very quickly!

Average temperatures are pretty mild – London is one of the UK’s warmest places. However frosty mornings are not uncommon in the city during December. There is some chance of snow – but generally this happens more during January and February. Rain is far more likely!

So don’t come to London expecting a White Christmas, as you’re fairly likely to be disappointed. January is the coldest month, and it doesn’t tend to snow in the UK more than just a few times per winter.

is london a good place to visit at christmas

Daylight hours

The shortest days of the year take place during December. So the skies will only be bright between around 9 am and 3 pm to 4 pm. Sunrise is at about 8 am, and sunset takes place around 4.30 pm .

  • Sunrise: Between about 07:45 and 08:10
  • Sunset: Between about 16:30 and 16:40

When planning your trip to London in December, one thing worth knowing is how dark it will be. The UK experiences the winter solstice – or shortest day – a few days before Christmas.

So the sun sets long before 5pm in December. In reality, the skies start to darken from late afternoon, so expect fading light between 3pm and 4pm and total darkness by 5pm.

In the morning, the sun rises between about 7.45am and 8.15am. Again, it’s a gradual lightening of the sky rather than a sudden burst of bright sunlight. So before 9am in December, don’t expect full daylight.

What to pack

When packing for London in December, lots of layers, a wind and waterproof jacket, sturdy shoes or boots and a compact umbrella are essentials to take along with you.

When visiting London, England in December, expect anything from mild weather when a jumper and a light jacket will suffice to a full-on blizzard with snow and gale-force winds! That way, you’ll be prepared for anything.

Wet weather gear is very important if you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors – and many of the top London places to visit in December are outside.

That extends to footwear, so if you’re buying new trainers or walking boots for your London trip then go for waterproof ones if you can.

A waterproof jacket is also a necessity. Layering is also key. So ideally, something like a waterproof, windproof jacket with a removable fleece inner would be ideal.

If it does get warm – and in the city temperatures can rise fairly rapidly – you might want to remove layers, so think about a daypack that has space to carry extra clothing.

is london a good place to visit at christmas

Dressing in layers such as a t-shirt and a sweater, cardigan or hoodie plus a winter jacket should be just right for most days, and you can adjust the layers if required.

Jeans are an obvious choice for your bottom half, but remember that they can get sodden and take ages to dry if there’s heavy rain. So some sort of quick-drying active trousers are a better option.

Take a woolly hat, a warm, cosy scarf, a pair of thermal gloves and some insulating socks with you. Keeping your head, neck, hands and feet warm when it’s really cold can make all the difference to your comfort levels when it’s bitterly cold in London.

is london a good place to visit at christmas

A warm packable jacket, a lightweight and comfortable daypack and a compact travel umbrella are great items to have when you’re packing for a December trip to London. Don’t forget a hat, scarf, gloves and warm socks too.

London’s festive highlights – where locals take their visitors

We’ve got the insider’s guide to seven of the best places to visit in London over Christmas.

London during the festive season is truly magical, the streets glow with Christmas lights, seasonal markets spring up and the smell of mulled wine wafts out of cosy bars.

It’s a special time of year to enjoy the capital’s seasonal charms, but they aren’t always to be found in the big attractions. So if you are visiting London, where should you go and what should you see?

We’ve got the insider secrets from a local on where she takes her visitors over the holiday season to make it unforgetable.

Hyde Park’s festive treat

1. winter wonderland.

Winter Wonderland is a classic, but for a good reason. It’s a festive paradise with rides, Christmas markets, and shows. Yes, it’s popular, but the atmosphere is unbeatable.

It’s open from 10am until 10pm daily until January 1st.

Saga digital content editor Jayne Cherrington-Cook moved to London from her native Devon 32 years ago. She shares her take on the top festive spots.

“Even though you can skate at Winter Wonderland, I prefer the ice rink at Somerset House ,” she says.

“It’s set in the neoclassical courtyard and is the epitome of Christmas. And if you want to combine your skating with a bit of a rave, they have weekend Skate Lates, which bring DJ sets from the best London night clubs.”

“As I live in South East London, another favourite of mine is the ice rink at The Queen’s House in Greenwich. Enjoy a skate and then go and enjoy a mulled wine overlooking the river at The Trafalgar Tavern .”

2. leadenhall market.

For a Harry Potter-esque Christmas vibe, visit the ornate Leadenhall Market . It’s beautifully decorated and less crowded than more famous spots, offering a unique blend of history and festivity.

The covered market, which dates back to the 14th century, has been used as a filming location for many films and TV programmes, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, where it served as the exterior of the Leaky Cauldron.

“The Southbank is one of my favourite places in London, whatever time of the year,” says Cherrington-Cook.

“It’s bustling, but never overwhelmingly packed, and it’s full of Christmas cheer, with lots of lights and pop-ups where you can enjoy a drink next to a fire pit.

“I really want to try one of the snow globes at Jimmy’s Pop-Up, Fire & Fromage. They’re little see-through igloos, which look super cosy.”

Visit the home of A Christmas Carol

4. the charles dickens museum.

Embrace the Christmas spirit by visiting the London home of the author of A Christmas Carol, which is credited for making Christmas the big celebration we enjoy today.

Christmas Eve is extra special where visitors can enjoy mince pies and mulled wine, while exploring the rooms where the famous author lived for two years.

Before making your journey don’t forget to check opening times and ticketing (if applicable) with the venue or destination.

Secret bars for cosy evenings

5. hidden bars for mulled wine.

Explore London’s hidden bars for a cosy evening. Try The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town , in Spitalfields, twice-crowned London bar of the year, for a quirky experience.

Or else discover Gordon’s Wine Bar , close to Covent Garden and the theatre district, which purports to be London’s oldest wine bar. Escape the hustle and bustle with a glass of wine and a sharing platter.

“Established in 1890, Gordon’s is the oldest wine bar in town – allegedly,” says Cherrington-Cook.

“It’s also one of my favourite cosy winter spots. Inside, it’s as you might expect to find a drinking den of the 19th Century –   dark corners, old oak casks of port and sherry decorating the wall, ancient photos of previous owners and crusting walls.

“It really is a special place and even though it’s close to the tourist centre – just a hop away from Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross – it’s often overlooked by those visiting as to be honest, it doesn’t look that special from the outside. Go and order yourself one of their delicious cheese boards and a bottle of wine and you’ll feel festive in no time.”

A festive flower market

6. columbia road flower market.

Every Sunday this street is transformed by the flower market into a floral wonderland. During the festive season, you’ll find Christmas trees, wreaths, and festive plants.

It’s not just great for flowers, but there are 60 independent businesses along the street. You can find art galleries, cupcake shops, vintage clothing stores, deli and antique shops.

Songs for Christmas

7. st james’ church festive music.

St James’ Church , in Picadilly, has joined forces with charity The Passage to raise funds for those experiencing homelessness this year.

The church is staging a series of musical performances, including carol services, classical performances and Gershwin piano evenings.

“Another great central church is St. Martin-in-the-Fields , which is located next to Trafalgar Square,” says Cherrington-Cook.

“They have a huge range of carol concerts, including services for the family and an awesome gospel concert. There’s also a lovely little cafe in the crypt, so you can grab a mince pie or even Christmas dinner while you’re there for a sing-song.”

Technology isn’t just for Christmas

How ai helped create our festive highlights.

We used AI to help us narrow down the best of the festive sights in London, with the help of AI specialist David Maher Roberts. Then our locals checked them over before they were included here. Maher Roberts said: “AI is proving to be incredibly useful in so many areas especially when you are dealing with vast amounts of information. “This means that instead of having to trawl through the internet to search for what to do or see or visit, you can instead just have a chat with a travel buddy AI that can fine tune recommendations just for you.”

5 Reasons To Visit London During The Christmas Holidays

Christmas is a magical time of year to be visiting London. There are spectacular decorations everywhere, and people are generally in a festive mood.  Here are some of our favourite seasonal experiences, which are all great reasons to visit London during the Christmas holidays.

1. Christmas Markets

There are several special Christmas markets operating in London. Typically, a selection of wooden huts or stalls with a variety of often handmade crafts. Some of the best include:

  • Covent Garden Christmas Markets is three daily markets filled with handmade crafts and unique gifts for Christmas.
  • Winter Festival at Southbank Centre has lots of pop-up food stalls & cultural activities for the whole family in this ever-popular location.
  • Christmas by the River at London Bridge City is set close to Tower Bridge with a view of the Tower of London; enjoy pop-up wooden cabins selling all manner of treats.
  • Winter Wonderland is set in Hyde Park and is always popular with younger visitors as there are a variety of fairground rides as well.

2. Ice skating

Ice skating in London is a very popular seasonal activity, and the ice rinks provide help for less experienced skaters.  Plus, they all have bars/cafes for those who prefer to watch. There are temporary ice skating rinks at:

  • Somerset House provides a spectacular backdrop for ice skating.  The building is often used as a filming location, and the terrace offers amazing views over the River Thames.
  • Canary Wharf is an amazing regeneration project in the East End of town.
  • Hampton Court Palace is a Grade I-listed royal palace in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

3. Illuminations and Christmas Lights

One of the best things about visiting London during the holiday season is experiencing the dazzling lights and decorations that adorn the city. Here are some of the best places to check out Christmas lights in London:

  • Kew Gardens , a giant Botanical garden set on the edge of London, has an enchanting light trail. This gets bigger and more popular every year. A firm favourite with Londoners, especially families with children.
  • Oxford Street always has impressive Christmas lights, but it can get a little busy at this time of year.

Other great places for Christmas lights:

  • Carnaby Street is one of the spiritual homes of the swinging sixties. This year, the lights show the carnival colours of Rio de Janeiro – the first for London.
  • The Strand has beautiful lights set in a big entertainment and shopping district.
  • Sloane Square has exquisite lights and is a great part of town for interesting shops.

The run-up to Christmas is hectic. People are rushing around doing last-minute shopping, but from Christmas Day until the New Year, London is less busy than usual, so this can be a great exploration opportunity.

Guide London provides friendly and informative Blue Badge Tourist Guides who can customise your itinerary to make sure you get the most out of your time here.

Try some of the well-known tourist attractions:

  • Westminster Abbey
  • Tower of London
  • Windsor Castle

Or try something a little further afield:

  • Royal Borough of Greenwich – Prime Meridian, standing with feet in different hemispheres, the Maritime Museum, and some of the best views anywhere in London.
  • East End – Spitalfields and Shoreditch offer a buzzing, hip part of town with great shopping, its ‘Flat White’ culture, and street art.
  • Notting Hill – a lovely village-type area with pretty houses and shops, where Julia Roberts met Hugh Grant.

5. Shopping

With the pound at a 30-year low, this is a great time for overseas visitors to shop, especially with the Christmas Sales starting straight after Christmas has finished.

Shopping for children

Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, the children’s shops can be great fun at Christmas. Some of the best include:

  • Hamleys is known as the best toy shop in the world. In-store demonstrators will be busy keeping kids amused.
  • Benjamin Pollock’s Toyshop is one of London’s oldest toy shops, where you can look for something a bit more traditional.
  • LEGO® Toy Shop London – Leicester Square is one of the largest Lego stores in the world.

Shopping for adults

The well-known shops on Oxford Street will be even busier than usual. This gives good reason to try some of the more independent and quaint shopping areas:

  • Burlington Arcade , situated on Piccadilly, is a beautifully styled arcade with many exclusive shops.
  • Duke of York Square , just off the King’s Road Chelsea, is an eclectic mix of smaller shops as well as Saatchi Gallery (modern art).
  • Seven Dials is just north of Covent Garden and has a wide variety of boutiques, cafes, and restaurants.

Whatever you choose to do, London will welcome you with open arms. Happy Holidays!

I've been to more than 30 countries, but I'll always think this European city is the best destination for children of any age

  • Of all the countries I've been to, I think London is the best place for kids of any age.
  • My husband and I took our son to the city when he was a baby, a preteen, and a teenager.
  • The city has many museums, parks, and other activities to entertain kids of all ages.

Insider Today

As a travel writer, one of my greatest loves is experiencing a new country , region, or city with my son. But one place has always been our favorite: London.

The city, which is projected to be the top summer travel destination in 2024 , is popular among tourists due to its iconic sites, gardens, and history. But if you ask me, London is also the best spot to bring your kids, especially if they range in age.

I've been to over 30 countries, and out of all of them, London is the place we chose to bring our child when he was a baby, a preteen, and a teenager.

From the city's amazing architecture to its bustling museums , there are plenty of activities to catch any kid's attention. Here's why I'll always believe London is a terrific destination for children of any age.

Transportation in London is usually a breeze

In my experience, arriving in and getting around London is pretty easy. The Heathrow Express, an airport rail link operating from London Heathrow Airport, can transport passengers to Paddington Station in 15 minutes or less.

Once in the city, we take the Tube, a rapid underground transit system, to get to the big sights. Children under 11 travel for free when accompanied by an adult, and discounts are available for older kids.

When my son was 11, he loved the Hop-On, Hop-Off bus, a touristy but fun experience that takes passengers to major city sights like Big Ben and the Tower of London. Passengers can get off the open-top double-decker vehicle anytime, take a tour, grab a bite to eat, and then continue their journey when the next bus comes.

I recommend getting a 48-hour pass because you can get a great city overview on the first day and then dig deeper into certain spots on the second.

Finally, in an emergency like an infant meltdown or a toddler tantrum, Ubers are almost always accessible.

The city is full of parks for children to play in

London has incredible green space for such a large city. Many of the city's parks are free to the public and are wonderful spots for kids to picnic, sightsee, and burn off energy.

Regent's Park has gorgeous gardens, a playground, and a lake. At Hyde Park, families with two adults and up to four children can swim in the Serpentine Lido for only £15, or about $19.

Related stories

Greenwich Park is another one of our favorites because it offers beautiful views of the River Thames and an expansive lawn surrounding the Royal Observatory and Prime Meridian.

There's no need to worry about a language barrier

I'm a seasoned traveler, but language barriers can still throw me for a loop. I always try to learn a few simple phrases, but not understanding a language and juggling a kid can cause a lot of stress.

In London, there's no need to worry about a language barrier. Though over 300 languages are spoken in the city, most people know English.

There might be different words for various objects — like "nappy" or "diaper" — but I've easily communicated with the people around us in London.

London is full of kid-friendly eateries

Each time we've traveled to London, I've seen terrific restaurant options for palates of all ages. For example, Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen offers a deal so children 8 and under dine for free when ordering off the kids' menu.

Delicious international foods , such as Italian, Indian, Thai, and Ethiopian cuisine, are also available all over London. Fast-food chains like Simit Sarayi and Yo! Sushi are also located throughout the city.

We loved taking our son to sample sweets at Harrods' Food Halls and enjoy sandwiches and scones at St. Martin-in-the-Fields' Café in the Crypt in Trafalgar Square.

There are tons of entertaining museums that offer free admission

London offers nearly 200 museums for patrons to soak up the city's culture and history. They're the perfect places to seek shelter from rain or serve as quiet, interesting respites for a napping baby.

On our first family trip, we strolled our then 8-month-old son through several wings of The British Museum as he peacefully slept. When he was 11, we hit The British Library to marvel at the Magna Carta and checked out the artwork at the National Portrait Gallery.

On our most recent excursion, we watched as our 16-year-old perused the masterpieces at Tate Modern. Most of these museums offer free admission, great kids' activities, hands-on exhibitions, and terrific gift shops.

London is close to tons of easy day-trip options

If you're a traveler who needs a change of pace or scenery every few days, London is a gateway to several day-trip destinations. Places like Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Birmingham, and Brighton are only a bus ride away.

Visiting cities like Paris , Brussels, and even Amsterdam in a single day is doable thanks to the Eurostar train, which runs through several Western European countries.

The bottom line: London's fun, full of great transportation options, and offers endless activities to entertain the entire family. It's truly a winner for kids of all ages.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Monday 29 April 2024 09:17, UK

is london a good place to visit at christmas

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

An underground train pulls into Leicester Square station in central London February 11, 2014. A planned 48-hour strike this week by staff on London's underground rail network which threatened to bring travel misery for millions has been suspended to allow further talks, unions said on Tuesday. Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

Monday 29 April

Tuesday 30 April

Wednesday 1 May

Tuesday 2 May

Wednesday 3 May

Thursday 4 May

Friday 5 May

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

How can I stay in the loop?

You can use the National Rail's journey planner to see when trains are running.

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".
