  • Jaipur To Ranthambore – A Helpful Travel Guide

Jaipur to Ranthambore - A Helpful Travel Guide

Jaipur to Ranthambore - A Helpful Travel Guide

Ranthambore is largely known for its tiger reserve, which earns it a spot on the list of tourist destinations. However, the area has a lot more to offer in terms of sightseeing and excursions. Ranthambore is nestled on the Thar Desert's border and is encircled by the Vindhya and Aravalli Hills. Because of its location, it benefits from the richness of fascinating desert regions as well as the plain areas surrounding the hills. The vegetation consists mostly of evergreen forests.

Ranthambore was the Maharaja of Jaipur's hunting grounds till 1955 when it was declared a wildlife sanctuary. With the commencement of Project Tiger, it was declared a wildlife reserve and included among the country's protected reserves in 1980. It has turned into a wildlife photographer's paradise as it allows them to photograph tigers in their natural surroundings.

A Jeep safari in the wildlife reserve, a traditional and cultural experience with the wonderful Meena tribes, and for some of the more excitement, a night out in the park's hideaways make Ranthambore a fascinating location. If you want to travel to Ranthambore from Jaipur, read this Jaipur to Ranthambore travel guide for detailed information.

Regular flights to Jaipur are available from all cities across India, allowing tourists to arrive safely. Tourists arriving at Sanganer Airport can take a cab or a bus to the spot. The closest railway station, Sawai Madhopur, is 10 kilometres away. The Sawai Madhopur railway station is prominently linked across all major towns and cities, thus tourists can easily travel there by train from anywhere. Visitors can easily access the RNP by taking a local bus, taxi, or cab from outside of the railway station.

Ranthambore is prominently linked with the state bus service from all major cities and towns, thus people may easily take buses from neighbouring residents to reach the location easily. Aside from the state bus service, travellers can also use buses operated by local, premium, and private operators. All of these buses make it easier for visitors to explore the place. Road travel from Ranthambore can take you to Jaipur (157km), Ahmedabad (657km), Jodhpur (450km), Delhi (417km), and Ajmer (274km). A tiger in Ranthambore National Park - worth the effort of a Jaipur to Ranthambore day trip

Easy Jaipur to Ranthambore National Park Day Trip

Last Updated on December 28, 2022 by Natalia

Taking a day trip from Jaipur to Ranthambore National Park is a great option if you’re pushed for time but want to have a chance to see the park’s famous tigers. Although it can be a long day, it’s absolutely worth it to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures, and for us seeing tigers was one of the highlights of our time in Rajasthan! If you don’t have the time in your Rajasthan itinerary to spend a few days in the nearby city of Sawai Madhopur then the next best option is to go from Jaipur to Ranthambore on a day trip. You still have a reasonable chance of seeing a tiger on a day trip, but as always with safaris it’s complete luck what you actually end up seeing! Personally we were fortunate enough to see tigers on 3 out of the 4 safaris we did, so hopefully you’ll have similar luck. Find out everything you need to know about taking a day trip from Jaipur to Ranthambore National Park below!

Find out more information about visiting the park with our Ranthambore Safari Travel Guide!

Is it worth visiting Ranthambore on a day trip from Jaipur?

If you want to see tigers in their natural habitat, then visiting Ranthambore National Park is definitely worth it – no matter how far you have to travel.

We personally think it’s better to stay in Sawai Madhopur for a few days so that you can take multiple safaris from there, but if you simply don’t have the time then a day trip from Jaipur to Ranthambore is still worthwhile. Obviously, with wildlife there are no guarantees what you’ll see, but the park is one of the best places in the world to see tigers.

Seeing tigers in the wild is unquestionably one of the most amazing experiences we’ve ever had on our travels. They’re truly beautiful creatures, and to have the chance to see them up close is incredibly special.

Even if you don’t see a tiger there are plenty of other amazing animals you could see on a Ranthambore safari, including monkeys, crocodiles, sloth bears, leopards, hyenas and more!

If you do decide to visit for more than a day trip then there are some great hotels in Ranthambore and Sawai Madhopur. Find out where to stay by reading our guide to the best hotels and resorts in Ranthambore!

What’s included on a Jaipur to Ranthambore day trip?

A standard Ranthambore tour package from Jaipur will include the following:

  • Round-trip transfer from Jaipur to Ranthambore National Park in a private air-conditioned car.
  • All entrance fees, road tolls and taxes.
  • A Jeep or Canter safari in Ranthambore National Park with a guide/wildlife spotter, lasting approximately 3-4 hours.

The drive from Jaipur to Ranthambore National Park is around 3½ hours one-way,  which means you’ll probably need to set off at around 9am-10am to arrive to the park in time to do an afternoon safari. Your safari will start around 2pm and finish at around 6pm, and so you should get back to Jaipur around 10pm.

A day trip from Jaipur to Ranthambore normally lasts at least 12-13 hours from start to finish, but it’s all worth it if you see a tiger! It can end up taking slightly longer if you decide to stop for food on the way there or back, which your driver will normally be happy to do.

2. Albert Hall Museum – Unravelling History’s Mystery!

blog27 4 1024x576 1

While in  Jaipur , travel to Rajasthan’s oldest museum, the Albert Hall Museum, located in the Ram Niwas Garden of Jaipur.

From the outside, the building has charming architecture. Its intricately carved sandstone angles and domes inspired by the Indo-Saracenic layout will capture your attention.

From inside, the museum hosts a rich collection of artifacts such as paintings, jewelry, carpets, ivory, stone, metal sculptures, and crystal works.

The collection also features coins from the Gupta, Kushan, and Delhi Sultanate periods and Mughal and British coins. However, the pinning attraction of this museum is a life-size Egyptian mummy!

Editor’s Note:  Nightfall reveals a new facade for the museum as yellow lights illuminate the entire structure. Try witnessing that, too.

3. Jaigarh Fort – Blend Of Mughal And Rajputana Architecture!

blog27 5 1024x576 1

Located 500 feet above sea level, Jaigarh Fort boasts panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Aram Mandir, Lalit Mandir, Laxmi Vilas, and Vilas Mandir are other attractions within the fort that would get your jaws wide open.

With Persian-inspired gardens, latticed windows, and beautiful exteriors, Jaigarh fort is a sight to behold.

The armory chamber of the fort displays swords, shields, guns, muskets, and a 50-kilogram (110 lb) cannonball. Among the old photographs on display are those of Sawai Bhawani Singh, a Maharaja of Jaipur, and Major General Man Singh II, a senior officer of the Indian Army.

To the left of the Awami Gate is a museum that houses photographs of Jaipur’s royal family, stamps, and other artifacts, such as a circular pack of cards. In addition, there is an old spittoon in the museum as well as a plan drawn by the hand of the palaces of the 15th century.

4. Jantar Mantar – Astronomical Wonder In Heart Of Jaipur

blog27 6 1024x576 1

Despite not using any mechanical technology, the Jantar Mantar’s unique architecture amazes everyone. Located on five acres of land, Jantar Mantar encompasses nineteen geometric shapes. Each of them serves a specific purpose in astronomical measurement.

Did you know that these mechanical devices measured time, the distance between planets and other celestial bodies? They can even detect planetary motion and eclipses and track orbital stars and heavenly heights.

It also features a Research Room and an Observer Room where you can see three-dimensional models of all the parts of the observatory, including instruments brought from other districts of  Rajasthan .

Every evening, Jantar Mantar presents a sound and light show. Taking you back in time, this program tells tales of yore about the Pink City, its history, and why Jantar Mantar was built. A captivating, immersive narrative and alluring hues of color entice audiences to spend time with it.

5. Amer Fort

blog27 7 1024x576 1

One of India’s most magnificent palaces, the Amer Fort, sits atop a hill near Jaipur. This majestic building, also known as the Amber Fort, is an architectural masterpiece with maze-like passages and serpentine staircases that have significant historical value for Indian history.

This attractive, luxurious building is surrounded by four courtyards which are entirely constructed from red sandstone and marble work.

The palace consists of Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), or Jai Mandir, as well as the Sukh Niwas, where winds blow over a waterfall within the palace to create a trendy environment.

Besides these courtyards, you can explore the museum within the palace to relive the history of the palace and the Rajputs. Another breathtaking site inside the fort is the Char Garden. It offers stunning views of the town below and is located in the Turban Museum only.

There is also the opportunity to explore the Amer Tunnel, which has only been discovered recently after being unknown for many years. This tunnel connects Amer Fort with Jaigarh Fort. During a siege, it served as an escape route. The tunnel is subterraneous only up to a certain point, after which it becomes roofless.

Light and sound show is another noteworthy activity of Amer Fort . The show explains how the Rajput kings constructed this magnificent fort. With its HD surround sound, this show will surely leave you amazed.

Heading To Ranthambore

blog27 9 1024x576 1

This 174.2 km journey that takes almost 4 hours combines the majestic charm of a city with the wild side. During your journey, you can see many picturesque villages that epitomize Rajasthan’s rich culture.

You can even stop at Rusirani Village before entering the jungle, take a detour to explore its ruins, or admire its history.

Rusirani Village

blog27 10 1024x576 1

On a hilltop outside Jaipur,  Rusirani Village  exhibits typical village customs to give travelers a taste of Indian rural life. The area boasts numerous historical ruins, traditional homes, and an ancient Shiva temple. You can also enjoy shopping in a market full of handicrafts here.

You won’t believe how warm the smiles of the residents are upon your arrival in the village. Their warm hearts and homes will welcome you. They will be posing for your cameras and will attempt to communicate with you.

Upon entering their homes, it appears that you can do whatever you want. You can learn how to use a Chulha (a source of preparing food) and dance to the beautiful music of the ladies while taking a cooking lesson.

The Rusirani Village is reminiscent of a bygone era. It goes without saying that we mean this in every way. The lack of electricity, poor communication, and inadequate transportation contribute to this situation. It is astounding how the people of this village still live as they did centuries ago in the 21st century.

Additionally, the voyage provides first-hand insight into the culture and spirituality of remote people living in these regions.

Ranthambore Sightseeing

Visiting Ranthambore National Park, Surwal Lake, Wild Dragon, Kachida Valley, and Trinetra Ganesh Temple.

1. Ranthambore National Park – The Land Of Tiger

blog27 11 1024x576 1

But today, it offers some of the finest opportunities to see the majestic tiger in the wild because it is located at the meeting point of some of the geologically oldest mountain ranges, the Vindyas and Aravallis.

Apart from tigers, the park is also home to sloth bears, leopards, caracals, jackals, foxes, hyenas, and mongooses. Occasionally, the Indian wolf has also been seen here.

Padam Talao, Malik Talao, and Raj Bagh Talao are among this forest’s picturesque lakes, small hills, and valleys.

In addition to its wild aura, the Chambal and Banas rivers surround Ranthambhore Forest from both sides. This National Park journey will enthrall you if you love nature and wildlife.

RANTHAMBORE NATIONAL PARK

Ranthambore National Park stands as a renowned and distinguished tiger habitat, distinguished as the world's largest national park boasting a diverse array of species, flora, and fauna. The park derives its name from the central Ranthambore fort, a historic monument that has witnessed significant changes and events throughout the park's history.

In the pre-independence era, the Indian subcontinent was covered with extensive forests. However, with escalating population and industrialization, rampant exploitation led to the depletion of these forests, consequently affecting the nation's wildlife. Recognizing this environmental concern, stringent rules and policies were implemented for the protection of Ranthambore National Park, which was initially under the ownership of the Maharajas of Jaipur.

Before 1955, the park served as an exclusive hunting ground for Jaipur's royal family. In 1955, it was designated as the "Sawai Madhopur Sanctuary." Concerns about the dwindling tiger population prompted the declaration of the sanctuary as part of the Project Tiger initiative in 1973, leading to the formulation of stricter policies. A significant milestone occurred in 1980 when 282.03 sq. km of the sanctuary was designated as a national park, resulting in reduced government collection of forest produce. Subsequent developments included the establishment of the Kela Devi Sanctuary on the north side in 1983 and the declaration of the Sawai Mansingh Sanctuary in 1984, covering an additional 130 sq km. These initiatives marked essential steps in the ongoing efforts to safeguard and preserve Ranthambore National Park's biodiversity.

Ranthambore National Park’s name comes from Ranthambore Fort which is situated on a hill in the park. This fort is approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ranthambore has a very famous Trinetra Ganesha Temple which is situated on the campus of the park. The Trinetra Ganesha Temple is very famous among Hindus.

The Indian subcontinent was covered in beautiful forests at the time before India gained its independence from British rule. However as industrialization and population growth grew, these forests were heavily exploited and eventually destroyed. Under the control of their hunting department, these woodlands were once used as hunting grounds for the Jaipur kingdom’s nobility. Despite this, as hunting was a rare activity, there wasn’t a noticeable, noticeable decline in the amount of wildlife. However, the onset of industrialization had a profound effect on the forest and its fauna, which resulted in a sharp decrease in the number of tigers that used to wander these woods.

After seeing the urgent intervention, the Rajasthan Government introduced the Rajasthan Forest Act in 1953 to safeguard the remaining forests. In 1955, the forest which was surrounding Ranthambore was declared the Sawai Madhopur Sanctuary. The government also launched Project Tiger in 1973 to protect and preserve the endangered tigers that were living in the forest. Later these sanctuaries were designated as Tiger Reserves.

With time, neighboring forests were added to the sanctuary and tiger reserve. The forests that bordered the sanctuary in the north were renamed the Kaila Devi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sawai Mansingh Wildlife Sanctuary in the following years. Presently, the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve includes both of these sanctuaries as essential components.

The government is making conservation efforts to save the tigers!

The major efforts for conservation in Ranthambore National Park started in 18973, when the government introduced Project Tiger intending to protect the tigers of the country, because of the increasing number of hunting or poaching. Project Tiger was started by the government of India after a census in 1972 which showed the decreasing number of tigers in the country.

Hence, Ranthambore Tiger Reserve became one of the prominent wildlife sanctuaries which worked on conserving tigers. This reserve was then divided into two areas, “core areas” and “buffer zones”. “Core Areas” were the areas where tigers could roam freely without any interruption and so to protect their natural habitats, deforestation, and other commercial activities were banned in these areas. “Buffer Areas” are those areas where the land can be used by the locals for farming or other purposes, and conservation by the government.

A formal entity has been required for the project’s effective operation ever since it was implemented. After a task force was established, project Tiger received the legislative authority that included both administrative and legal authorities. The National Tiger Conservation Authority, or NTCA, is the name of this organization. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, as revised in 2006, grants it specific authority. The Authority monitors how well the tiger reserves’ conservation and tourism-related policies are being implemented and followed. It also guarantees backing for the conservation plan’s efficient execution. The number of Bengal tigers in Ranthambore National Park increased from 66 in 2019 to 81 in 2021, according to a recent census.

As mentioned by SP Yadav, the member secretary of NTCA, the population of tigers in the country has increased at an average rate of 6% annually. He thinks that by employing locals in eco-tourism and conservation-related fields and educating them about the significance of tigers for ecological balance, we might inspire more enthusiasm for tiger conservation.

Camel on the way to Ranthambore.

We took a taxi from Jaipur to Ranthambore at 8 a.m. And drove for about 4 hours to get to Ranthambore, which is 160 kilometres from Jaipur. We forget our tiredness of travel once we arrive in Ranthambore because of its beautiful nature.

In terms of natural beauty, I believe Ranthambore is the most beautiful town in Rajasthan. We arrived at our resort, refreshed, and ate dinner. We left about 2:00 p.m. to see Ranthambore Fort.

Visit Ranthambore Fort.

Part of Ranthambore Fort.

The fort of Ranthambore is constructed on a hilltop deep within the national park. This popular tourist destination was once the hunting grounds of Jaipur’s Maharaja. The fort was built in the 10th century and is considered Rajasthan’s oldest fort.

The Ranthambore Fort is surrounded by a massive stone wall. Inside the fort, you’ll find a gigantic gate, a large wall, tanks, and pieces of Rajasthan architecture, such as towering gates, stone pathways, and temples.

Ranthambore Fort.

The most important temple within the fort is the Ganesh temple. Every day, a large number of local and international tourists visit the Ganesh Temple. People believe that inviting Lord Ganesh to their wedding, birthday, or another special occasion will result in a blessing.

That is why they send invitation letters to Ganesha at this temple address. I believe the Ganesh temple is a must-see attraction within the fort. The fort also offers an incredible panoramic view of the park.

View of National Park from Ranthambore fort.

To reach Ranthambore fort, you may drive to the park or book a cab to the entry point, where a forest jeep or canter will take you to the fort.

Day 2 of Ranthambore Itinerary

Ranthambore safari.

Me Inside of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve.

A Jeep or Canter will arrive to pick you up from the hotel early in the morning. You will be stopped for a little while near the entry gate to register. Then your three-and-a-half-hour adventure will begin.

Inside the Ranthambore National Park, you will not only discover tigers but also many other rare species like leopards, flying foxes, black bucks, mongoose, and so on, as well as magnificent birds. We entered from zone three.

Banyan Tree at the Entrance of 3rd Zone.

The first thing we see is a vast ancient banyan tree. We also saw beautiful landscapes, lakes, birds, deer, sambar, and crocodiles on our safari.

Lake inside Ranthambore National Park

Our guide and driver were still looking for the tiger. We stopped several times and waited for the tiger whenever deer or birds generated a special sound that revealed the presence of the tiger.

Tiger Behind the Bushes.

The funny and terrifying moment for me was when our driver asked the guide whether he should get out of the jeep and look into the bushes to see if there was a tiger inside. Believe me, a safari in the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve would be your most unforgettable experience on our Ranthambore Itinerary.

Village Women Craft in Ranthambore

Women making Craft by Hand.

Village Women Craft in Ranthambore is the place to go if you want to buy handicrafts or learn how they are made. This is a well-known craft village in Rajasthan that was formed to help local women to be financially and socially independent.

In this craft village, you can watch how women create Rajasthani-style crafts and paintings, woollen carpets, silk goods, rugs, and other items. Village woman craft is a great place to buy souvenirs and learn about handicrafts.

What I truly admire about this Craft Village is that no one pressures you to buy anything; you can watch and ask these women questions without feeling forced to buy.

Spotted Deer In Jhalana Leopard Reserve

Flora In Jhalana Leopard Reserve – narrow valleys of the Aravallis and sharp cliffs of hills dominate the landscape of Jhalana Leopard Reserve. The captivating natural surroundings of the forest of Jhalana and the tranquility here are extremely relaxing and a delight for the mind. The presence of such great wildlife in the urban region makes this land a different and unique site for nature enthusiasts. Jhalana is a dry deciduous forest. The forest remains dry most of the time of the year as trees shed their leaves in the dry season and lush emeralds during the monsoons. The Jhalana forest is dominated by plants like juliflora (Prosopis juliflora) and khejri (Prosopis cineraria). The rapidly growing juliflora was initially planted to provide firewood for local villagers. However, trees do not support the growth of other grasslands and trees. The slanting valleys have more Local flora variety such as dhak (Butea monosperma), salar (Boswellia serrata), dhonk (Anogeissus pendula), and kumta (Acacia senegal).

Fauna In Jhalana Leopard Reserve – Obviously, the majestic Leopard is the prime and most covered mammal of this Jhalana Leopard Reserve, which is also the top predator of the region and who comes first in the food chain of the Jhalana forest reserve. Although the Leopard is known to be a nocturnal, solitary, shy, and rare-sighted predator with a master of stealth hunting skills, Leopards of the Jhalana National Park are diurnal in nature like tigers in Ranthambore and Sariska , due to which they are easily visible in the daytime making it one of the most visited reserve forests by Leopard lovers.

Apart from the Leopard, other big cats of the Jhalana Leopard Park are Leopard, Indian civets, desert cats, and jungle cats. This forest also provides food and shelter to other animals like Striped Hyena, desert foxes, jackals, porcupines, jungle rats, monitor lizards, mongooses,  Sambar deer, spotted deer (chital), Blue Bull (Nilgai), and a variety of snakes.

A lot of rare bird species are found in Jhalana Leopard Reserve which makes this place a paradise for bird watching. Birds like the Indian Pitta, Dusky Eagle, Owl, Spotted Owlet, etc. can be seen in Jhalana National Park.

Best time to visit Jhalana Safari :

The Jhalana Leopard Reserve (The 1st Leopard reserve in India) is open for the safari tours for the visitors for all 12 months even in the monsoon season from 1st January to 31st December every year, according to the entry timings of that particular season.  In Monsoon season most of the protected reserves in the country are closed, but here’s something to compensate for that.

Though one can enjoy the Jhalana Leopard Safari and savor the view of the majestic Leopard anytime, from November to April is considered the best time to visit Jhalana reserve as the weather is delightful at this point of time and nature is in its complete blossom around this time enhancing the beauty of the forest.
