Hailing from Randalstown, Co. Antrim, in Northern Ireland. Johnny has been involved in the music industry for almost 20 years, serving his time and learning the tricks of the trade he has had the honor of working with a host of top musicians and performers and featured as front man in some very successful touring shows and acts. Having performed in every major venue in Ireland he is ever the professional.
Country Music was always at the forefront of Johnny’s life with strong connections from a young age. With influences ranging from great American singers like Vince Gill, Merle Haggard, Randy Travis and Ricky Skaggs right through to great Irish Country singers like Philomena Begley and Brian Coll.
Of course with a family connection with the mighty Castleblaney legend Big Tom and having spent many happy occasions around Big Tom’s home as a boy it was destiny that Johnny should end up on the County Music scene in Ireland. In later years Johnny went on to enjoy many nights at the then famous “Old Log Cabin” where endless Country songs were performed. With Castleblaney being the Country Music Centre of Ireland in the 1980s/’90s, this early, up-close introduction to the Country scene was a revelation for Johnny. Enjoying life on the road with his 5-piece band, Johnny loves nothing more than meeting all the Country fans around Ireland and is excited for the summer season, which is fast approaching.
With a string of hits under his belt and a few years on the road with his band Johnny had huge success with his last album ‘Dance with me’ released in November, destined for the top both himself and his background team watched in amazement and delight as it went straight to number one on the iTunes chart with fans hurrying to get their copy ahead of Taylor Swift, The Best of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. Featured on the Album are popular songs from Johnny such as ‘Down by the River’, ‘Have We Reached the Bottom Yet’, ‘I Want Crazy and self penned “A Gift From Above .’ This was just the start for him with Johnny’s latest video of the popular Ed Sheerin hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’ taking social media by storm following the appearance of himself and his daughter showing their strong bond teamed with fantastic vocals it showed a versatile side to the country singer
With an action packed year planned for this year and plans in place for yet another studio album, a live dvd and live album he will also be performing at a lot of the top festivals over the summer months along with his first concert tour in the autumn. 2015 is set to be Johnny’s year. For anyone that has been to the Johnny Brady show before they will agree that it is a show like no other, high in energy, with all those country favorites mixed in with the warm personality of Johnny and a few self penned songs and of course a full dance floor from the strike of the first chord so don’t miss your chance to see him live when he appears at a venue near you soon.
Johnny is now in the elite group of top touring Irish country artists, he is noted for not only being one of the most energetic performers on the road but also having one of the best dance bands as well. He has collected numerous awards then most recent been ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR received in Clonmel at the Tipp FM radio awards sold out concert Johnny has well and truly cemented himself within the country music scene. Country music star Johnny Brady and his wife Toni have been married for 16 years after meeting on holiday in Spain. Lockdown brought them closer together and they both rallied around to keep things moving at home as the music industry came to a grinding halt for nearly two years.
While Toni worked extra house, Johnny was on hand to help home-school their kids Freya and Shea and the furlough scheme allowed him to record some music.
He is used to being on stage alone but recently he linked up with Simon Casey, Nigel Connell and The Sheerin Family Band to form Take It to The Limit. Here, he opens about making a living during the pandemic, how he met his wife Toni on a lads holiday and his inspiration in the world of music.
Read more: Country music star Colm Kirwan's life in Nashville with wife Caitriona, how they met and Irish wedding
How has the last two years been for you?
I have been focused on song writing while not on the road and I have been collaborating with other people from Nashville and here in Ireland. I put out a couple of singles as well but, in the country scene, you need to be careful that the songs suit the dances and the scene. You have to make sure that they work for the market. I delved into something a bit more “crossover”, it was more soulful. Lockdown was hard in the fact that I wasn’t getting out to gigs and I missed the camaraderie with the other musicians I play with. This world is supposed to be a social one.
Did the lockdowns ever really get to you?
After a few months I began to feel down about it all but I had to remember that a lot of other people were going through a hard time. It is hard not to think that things are just about yourself. My mum always said “Nothing is so bad that it couldn’t be worse” and I understand that.
With no touring happening and no dances taking place, how did you make a living?
I paid my taxes so I qualified for the furlough scheme in Northern Ireland under the self-employed bracket. I was able to get just enough money to cover my monthly bills. My wife Toni works in a school and she took on an extra two hours in the morning cleaning. That really helped us out. A friend of mine picks up motorbikes and he needed someone to drive so I helped him out every now and again. The Arts Council gave out grants to people like me who keep our craft alive. I spent my grants in the studio and they allowed me to put out two singles.
How was the homeschooling with Freya, 12, and nine-year-old Shea?
I wasn’t great, to be honest. I never did well at school and I found it hard to concentrate. Dyslexia was a major problem for me and I left school at 16. I had no interest in school but, looking back, I wish I worked harder and listened more.
Tell us about your wife Toni, when did you get married?
We celebrated 16 years of marriage together in November. She is from Aberdeen and we met on September 11, 2011, in Spain, which is a bit crazy. She was working in Spain and I was there on a lads holiday. She moved from Scotland to Belfast, which is about 30 minutes from me. I had a band established at the time, it was more of a wedding band rather than country music. Two kids and two dogs later, we are all good.
Will the kids follow your footsteps into the world of music?
Shea is more interested in his Xbox recently but he did try out the drums a few years ago. We shot a music video at home and he asked to keep the snare drum and he was always hammering away in his room. I got him out a playlist and he practised all the time, he had a real flair for it. Freya has a beautiful voice, she is playing a bit of piano in school and she wants to study music for her GCSEs. She has done a couple of concerts with me and she sang Taylor Swift. Introducing her on stage is one of my proudest moments. You can’t push them down that road, they have to want it themselves because it is a big commitment.
What’s it like working with the band Take It To The Limit alongside Simon Casey, Nigel Connell and The Sheerin Family Band?
Teaming up with the lads has been great and everyone is adding their sound to the iconic songs by The Eagles. We have gelled together really well and it has worked out perfectly from the start. We are performing in the Millennium Forum in Derry and the big room in the INEC in Killarney. I can’t wait to show people how great this band is.
You are a cover band for The Eagles, you must be a big fan!
The main credit has to go to The Eagles because they sat down and wrote these incredible songs in the 1970’s. They took time off in the 1980’s and their songs were so good from the decade before that they constantly were played on the radio. They did a reunion in the 1990’s and they are still touring to this day. My father introduced them to me and I can still remember buying my first cassette tape. I remember playing it in the car and I kept rewinding it back to the start and playing it again. He couldn’t believe that I was so into this band.
Do you get any other inspiration from country stars?
My mum was mad into Irish country music and she listened to Susan McCann, Philomena Begley and Big Tom. That is the type of music I heard on record players at home. My parents have passed on now, God rest them, but they have given me these big influences. I think about my father a lot when I play The Eagles. It is also the sound of my childhood and it gives me a trip down memory lane. My roots are in country but I started in my first band in 1991 when I was just 15. I had influences from rock and indie before turning to country.
Is it hard to drum up support and fill out those big auditoriums?
It’s so difficult and you need to get a level with these things. You need to bring a team with you every night and you hope that enough people come to the gig so everyone can make money. It’s very expensive to put on a show, even in my own band, I have seven people. There are a lot of people to look after. With Take It To The Limit, we have 10 people on stage and three or four lads behind the scenes with lighting and sound. You are always taking a chance, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. People are mad to get back out there and dance and do what they love to do. Irish country music fans are probably the best in the world. I work with a lot of people from Nashville and they will say that to me.
You are used to being a solo artist, what is it like sharing the stage with other singers now?
It takes the pressure away a wee bit. Being in a band is something that you live to do and you couldn’t do it if you didn’t love it. It is not the Johnny Brady Band anymore and I am actually enjoying not having my name over the door. In a band though, you really have to rely on the people and musicians around you in order to make it a success.
Who would you be closest to in the country music scene in Ireland?
I came from a pop and rock background and I thought country music would be a lot easier than it is. I have been very lucky to work with Mike Denver , Derek Ryan , Declan Nerney, Nathan Carter and Jimmy Buckley on their tours. I have learned something from all those guys. I don’t phone anyone on a daily basis but I always hang out with them when we are working together. I had a pint with Brendan Shine one night, what a man and what a story teller [laughs].
And you’re related to Big Tom?
I grew up with Big Tom, my grandfather was his uncle. I listened to a lot of my early gigs in the Old Log Cabin. I collected glasses there when I was eight or nine years old. I did a gig with him in Monaghan about six months before he died. He was a great man and he was always himself. He was a real legend.
