Reds prospects Jose Torres & TJ Hopkins go off at the plate

Last night saw Jose Torres go 4-4 with two home runs in a Dayton Dragons win. TJ Hopkins went 3-3 with a walk and three steals in a Chattanooga Lookouts win. It was quite the night for both guys.

The start to the season was a bit of a struggle at the plate for Jose Torres. Coming off of an outstanding debut in 2021, he was hitting just .179 with a .421 OPS through the first eight games of the season. But last night he beat up on the West Michigan Whitecaps, falling a triple short of the cycle but hitting two home runs in the process. Oh, and he also picked up a stolen base for good measure.

By the time that the game was over, Jose Torres nearly doubled his season OPS. He was hitting .281/.303/.531 at games end. The offensive outburst helped lead the Dragons to a win and keep them on top of the East Division with an 8-3 record.

TJ Hopkins hot start continues

Yesterday afternoon I had a quick little note on TJ Hopkins in the MiLB Notebook , but his start to the season got even better last night. The outfielder got on base every time he came to the plate, singling three times and walking in his other plate appearance.

The 25-year-old outfielder leads the Cincinnati Reds farm system in OPS, hitting a scorching .379/.514/.690 through the first nine games of the year. He’s picked up three doubles, two home runs, stolen four bases, walked eight times, and he’s struck out 11 times. And last night, the Chattanooga Lookouts needed every bit that he contributed as they eeked out a 4-3 win over Mississippi to move above the .500 mark to 6-5 on the season.

Sam Benschoter keeps ’em missing

Right-handed pitcher Sam Benschoter dominated the Bradenton Marauders last night in Daytona. Coming out of the bullpen he allowed just two hits and a walk in 4.0 innings while striking out a career best nine batters. That outing followed up his start last week where he threw 4.0 perfect innings with seven strikeouts.

His first outing of the year saw him allow three runs in 2.2 innings while walking one and striking out three. Since then he’s been absolutely brilliant on the mound. Benschoter now has 19 strikeouts in 10.2 innings this season while walking just two batters. He’s only faced 41 batters this season, meaning he’s struck out 46% of the hitters that he’s faced. Hes’ picked up 45 swinging strikes out of 158 pitches thrown – good for a swinging strike rate of 28%. For some perspective the MLB average swinging strike rate is 11%. Obviously there’s a big difference between the Low-A Florida State League and the highest level on the planet, but it does show just how dominant he’s been within his league.

Hopkins doesn’t really have the power to stick as a major league corner OF so it looks like he’ll need to prove he can stick in CF to avoid being tagged as a 4th OF. Even then, it’s pretty good for a 9th round pick. There’s good value in a guy who can grind out at bats and put the bat on the ball. While being 25 in AA isn’t ideal, Hopkins falls into that grouping of guys who lost the 2020 year and now seem a shade older for their level.

Hendrick is killing a ball while Allen is struggling. Did not see that.

Confidan in between.

Torres is trying hard to disprove the pre-draft notions about his hit tool. SS is quite a position of strength for the Reds right now. That is definitely a good thing,

Another bomb tonight, too.

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-NC State v Vanderbilt

In a very close race, shortstop Jose Torres won the weekend voting for spot #15 in this year’s Red Reporter Community Prospect Rankings. There were certainly other qualified candidates, of course, but it’s hard to deny that what Torres put together during calendar year 2021 wasn’t deserving.

His play with NC State landed him as a 3rd round draft pick, and all he did once entering the professional ranks was show that his bat just might play much, much better than most scouts thought.

On to the voting for spot #16!

Lyon Richardson - RHP (22 years old)

2021 at a glance: 5.09 ERA in 76.0 innings for the Dayton Dragons (High-A Central League); 91/38 K/BB.

Pros: Mid-90’s fastball, average slider and curve ball that he can throw for strikes when he’s on.

Cons: Velocity has never hit the reported 98 MPH that he threw in high school at the professional level. Has struggled to get batters out in the minors.

Things have been pretty difficult for Lyon Richardson since the Reds took him in the second round of the 2018 draft. He was an athletic, two-way player committed to the University of Florida when the Reds paid over slot value to get him. Mainly known as an outfielder, he was relatively new to pitching when he was drafted and his upper-90’s fastball really impressed scouts. Unfortunately that raw talent hasn’t translated at the professional level.

Richardson has a career 4.88 ERA in three minor league seasons since getting drafted back in 2018. There were some signs of improvement last season, but he still struggled mightily with his command, walking 4.50 batters per 9 innings in 2021. He did improve his strikeout totals, fanning nearly 11 batters per 9 last season, so the stuff is there when he’s on. Hopefully another full season on the mound will help things start to materialize for Richardson in 2022.

Ivan Johnson - SS/2B (23 years old)

2021 at a glance: .264/.367/.451 with 10 HR and 19 2B in 330 PA split between Daytona Tortugas (Low-A Southeast League) and Dayton Dragons (High-A Central League).

Pros: Decent hit tool from both sides of the plate and has some raw power. Defense plays well at both shortstop and second base.

Cons: Strikeout rate of 28% in Daytona and 34% in Dayton after showing a strong ability to make contact in Greeneville.

Ivan Johnson is a 23 year-old switch-hitting infielder who the Reds drafted in the 4th round of the 2019 draft out of Chipola Junior College. After a solid season in 2019, he had to play in the instructional league during the canceled 2020 season. While he showed some upside at the plate with his power and ability to draw a walk, he also struck out a ton. He struck out 100 times in 330 PA (30.3%), up from a K% of 22% in 2019.

Johnson definitely has some upside at the plate, as well. He showed off some decent power numbers, mashing 10 dingers and hitting 19 doubles in those 330 PA. He hits slightly better from the left side, hitting .274/.362/.471 from the left side while hitting .230/.382/.377 from the right side. Interestingly, he put up a BB% of 18.4% from the right side against a 10.8% BB% from the left. He’s an average defender with an arm that can play at both positions, but his range is a little questionable so he may end up at second base in the long term.

TJ Friedl - OF (26 years old)

2021 at a glance: .264/.357/.422 with 12 HR and 15 2B in 448 PA with Louisville Bats (AAA-East), .290/.361/.419 in 36 PA with Reds in MLB debut

Pros: Speed and defense, with just enough arm to make it a pretty feasible CF combination; high contact, ability to take walks

Cons: Lack of hard contact and lots of soft contact

It’s a bit difficult for my old eyes to process that it’s been almost six years since Friedl’s unique journey to the Cincinnati Reds. Despite playing for Team USA and having grades as high as a potential 2nd round pick by some scouts, Friedl’s draft eligibility somehow got overlooked by most all teams in baseball, rendering him undrafted out of the University of Nevada in 2016. When teams across MLB had their eureka moment that he was signable, though, most had already used up their draft bonus pools on their actual draftees, and the Reds - who had nearly a quarter of a million bucks still to allocate - landed Friedl with the best offer.

Since then, Friedl’s performed just fine, though he’s pretty much progressed in a linear fashion - meaning, he had the look of a potentially fine 4th OF slash platoon bat, one who could run the bases well for someone else and make some good plays on defense in the outfield, and that’s still pretty much where he is. He’s not yet faltered from that path, nor has he busted out and left it behind, but it was good enough to get him to the bigs last fall and to have him very much in the mix for an Opening Day roster spot as just that, too. Known quantities have plenty of value, y’know.

Which Cincinnati Reds prospect deserves the #16 spot in this year’s Community Prospect Rankings?

Following a comfortable opening from French/US band the Dove and the Wolf, Torres took to the tiny Soup Kitchen stage looking decidedly less than comfortable.

Her stature, both physically and within the music industry, demands a bigger platform than this cramped basement offered. Although paradoxically, the gig wasn’t sold out, at least not in the hours running up to the doors opening.

Visibly more assured than her last visit to Manchester, Mackenzie Scott and her backing band began with a handful of songs from the recent ‘Three Futures’ album with confidence and aplomb marred only by the murky sound that rendered the vocals indecipherable.

The constricting nature of the venue meant Torres’s performance was like that of a caged lioness, limited to turning her back to the audience with slow and sensuous jolts in line with the thud of the bass drum and intense facial contortions.

The more synth-based newer tunes sat at ease with the older guitar-driven favourites such as the towering ‘Sprinter’, the welcome ‘Honey’ and the swaggering ‘Cowboy Guilt’.

I have still yet to come to terms with ‘Bad Baby Pie’ either on the new lp or in this more tactile environment, but this was more than compensated by ‘Helen in the Woods’ as much a treat tonight as on record.

By the time of the encore the sound gremlins had had enough and allowed the band to say good night with a ‘Strange Hellos’ as near to perfection as the audience could hope for.

\Brooklyn-based musician Mackenzie Scott, better known as Torres, brings her lush, heartfelt feminist-forward music back to Toronto.

https://torres.bandcamp.com/

with special guests Charlotte Cornfield and Hex at the Jam Factory.

For this occasion, Torres played a solo set that was well worth waiting for since she had to cancel a concert a while back. She told some fun stories which were followed by great music which extended beyond midnight- the usual time frame for some of these shows.

It is hard to fully capture the feelings that many of us felt last night, however, Torres is an artist that is here to stay along with a new recording that is on the way.

We want more!

Torres was incredibly good. I saw her in SF and I am definitely going to see her again. I felt she was a bit dry, like a piece of toast, trying to mantain a persona. Nevertheless, the overall concert was awesome. High intensity combined with great melodies

Incredible show in Los Angeles. Emotional, vulnerable, open, but still rocking hard. It was an intimate show at the Troubadour, mostly songs from her latest album Thirstier, and it felt like everyone there was on the same wavelength. She held nothing back.

We couldn't have asked for a better night! The space was perfect, the setlist was so much more than we could have expected. Getting the opportunity to hear such beautiful stories from Mackenzie and chat with her afterwards was magical.

Torres is awesome! I saw her open for Tegan and Sara. I was blown away. She kicked ass. I fell in love with some of her songs. Even got to meet her after the show. She was very sweet and humble. I'd be delighted to see her again.

Energetic and subtle concert full of great feelings, all folks listened quietly this amazing performance by Torres and the venue was great.

The music is contrastant and at the same time very equilibrated.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
