Penn State running back Journey Brown is medically retiring from football after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Head coach James Franklin announced Wednesday night that the redshirt junior would no longer be able to play. Brown had been held out of the season, as Penn State announced in October that a medical condition was discovered in the offseason.

According to WebMD, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy "is associated with thickening of the heart muscle ... which leads to stiffening of the walls of the heart and abnormal aortic and mitral heart valve function, both of which may impede normal blood flow out of the heart."

"It was discovered through a routine COVID-19 test, although it is not COVID-related," Franklin said. "We learned about this in early September, and we've been working through this and dealing with this as a team. Journey is one of the most popular and respected players on our team.

"The entire organization has rallied behind Journey and his family."

Brown started 10 games for Penn State last season and led the team with 890 yards and 12 touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 217-pound back was set to be one of the more important players coming back on offense.

Brown took to social media Wednesday night to express his feelings about the diagnosis.

I didn't even expect to make it this far but it's about Journey, not the destination. #HLM #SIAM pic.twitter.com/nbQrIsjXzY — SUNNY-D☀️🦕 (@JourneyBrown6) November 11, 2020

He wrote about the first time he fell in love with football and how it changed his life and how it became less of a game and more of a lifestyle.

"I finally had the opportunity to showcase what I was born to do and, hopefully, set myself up to achieve my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL," Brown wrote. "Unfortunately, the dream will never be realized as I have been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which will force me to medically retire from the game of football. The pain of not being able to play the game I love anymore hurts and I can't explain how I am feeling right now."

Brown went on to say that he gave everything he had and has no regrets about how his journey is ending.

Penn State has been without Brown this season and lost running back Noah Cain to injury. Devyn Ford is now carrying the workload in the run game, along with quarterback Sean Clifford . The team has 388 total rushing yards and two touchdowns.

PSU football commit Journey Brown breaks Leroy Burrell’s 32-year-old PIAA 100m record, wins second straight state gold

For Penn State running back-to-be Journey Brown, it’s always been football first.

But for a little over ten seconds on Saturday, Brown’s track speed was on full display. With a second straight state title and one very impressive record added to Brown’s already-decorated resume, James Franklin and Nittany Lion fans alike will be even more excited to get the Meadville sprinter on the field.

As a steady rain fell, Brown won the 3A boys’ 100-meter dash in a PIAA meet record 10.43 seconds to win his second gold medal in as many years. Brown’s time eclipsed Penn Wood’s Leroy Burrell, whose mark of 10.44 from the 1985 state meet stood as the record for 32 years. Burrell would go on to twice become world record holder in the event, running his best of 9.85 seconds in 1994.

“I wasn’t really thinking about [the record]…I just wanted to win,” the well-spoken Brown said of his mentality before the race, while acknowledging the feat’s historical significance. “And the rain didn’t bother me, because I’ve been running in weather like this all season long.”

Brown’s time was initially posted as a 10.44, meaning he would be forced to share the record with Burrell. But a review of the finish line photo allowed another hundredth to be shaved off, relegating the former Olympic gold medalist to definitive runner-up status.

Even with such clear straight-line talent out of the blocks, Brown isn’t wavering in his commitment to the sport that’s paying his way through school. But he isn’t opposed to lacing up his track spikes down the road if the opportunity presents itself.

“Football’s my sport,” Brown said. “But if they want to let me to do football and track then I’ll do football and track."

And despite a clear distinction between the sports’ two universes, Brown knew that head coach James Franklin, offensive Coordinator Joe Moorhead and the rest of his future Nittany Lion family would be ready to help him celebrate Saturday’s achievement.

“I can’t wait to check my texts,” Brown said with a smile, gold medal dangling from his neck. “I’m sure [Franklin] is blowing up my phone right now.”

It's official: journey brown's 722 yards in national record book, share this article.

The Meadville (Pa.) football rushing attack and back Journey Brown are now officially in the national high school record book.

Through the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, the National Federation of State High School Associations has verified that Meadville posted 1,004 rushing yards in its 107-90 victory against DuBois and that Brown ran for 722 yards, according to Chris Boone, from the NFHS.

The 1,004 yards is a national record. The 722 rushing yards ranks second.

Here is a look at the page that includes Brown on the Federation web site:

Boone said for records to be included the school needs to supply an application that the state association needs to verify before the records are included.

The PIAA is awaiting word from DuBois about its records from that game. DuBois sophomore QB Matt Miller threw for 787 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first varsity start. That yardage when confirmed would be a national record.

A heart condition forces Penn State running back Journey Brown out of football for good

Brown, the Nittany Lions’ leading rusher last season following his 202-yard performance in the Cotton Bowl, was diagnosed in early September. Second opinions confirmed that he could not play again.

Penn State running back Journey Brown carries during the first half against Memphis in the Cotton Bowl last season.

Penn State’s Journey Brown, a redshirt junior whose sensational late-season performance in 2019 vaulted him to consideration for national awards in the 2020 preseason, must retire from football because of a heart condition, head coach James Franklin announced Wednesday night.

In a statement he released on his Twitter account, Brown identified his ailment as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, where abnormal genes in the heart muscle cause the walls of the heart chamber to become thicker than normal, reducing the amount of blood taken in and pumped out to the body with each heartbeat.

Franklin said Brown was first diagnosed with the condition in early September. He said internal testing and second opinions confirmed what doctors at Penn State had thought all along.

“Journey Brown will no longer be able to play football,” he said. “It was discovered through a routine COVID-19 test, although it is not COVID-related. We’ve been working through this and dealing with this as a team. Journey’s one of the most popular and respected players on our team. The entire organization has rallied behind Journey and his family. We need Nittany Nation to do the same, as I know we will.

“Journey’s handled this unbelievably well and I know he’ll be extremely successful in whatever he decides to do. He’s been serving as an assistant coach, running backs coach. He’s been very involved. He’s been traveling to all the games and all those types of things.”

Brown led the Nittany Lions in rushing last year with 890 yards, a 6.9-yard average, and 12 touchdowns. He rolled up 593 yards on the ground in his last five games, including a program bowl-record 202-yard performance in the team’s Cotton Bowl win over Memphis.

Brown’s late burst was remembered in the preseason. The 5-foot-11, 217-pound Brown was named to the watch lists for the Maxwell Award, the Paul Hornung Award, and the Doak Walker Award, and he was named preseason All-Big Ten by two publications.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Franklin said. “When we found out about it, you’re in shock. You feel physically sick about it. So you hurt for the kid. Obviously, it’s magnified because of all the conversations that were going on nationally about Journey and what he was going to be able to do this season. But I’ll tell you, the kid has been phenomenal. He’s handled it better than, I think, anybody I’ve ever been around.”

Brown, who ran a time of 10.43 seconds in 2017 for Meadville High School to break the PIAA Class AA record held by former Penn Wood star and Olympian Leroy Burrell in the 100 meters, sat out his first season at Penn State and carried the ball only eight times as a redshirt freshman before blossoming last year.

“After all the waiting and watching, I finally had the opportunity to showcase what I was born to do, and hopefully set myself up to achieve my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL,” Brown said in his Twitter statement. "Unfortunately, the dream will never be realized.

“The pain of not being able to play the game I love any more hurts and I can’t explain how I am feeling right now. However, I can walk away from the game knowing I truly gave my all at every practice, on every down and in the locker room every day. You never know when you will play your last snap, but I know I left it all out there and have no regrets.”

Franklin often has expressed his admiration for how Brown handled adversity in his life. Since enrolling at Penn State in 2017, Brown has lost his grandmother, two aunts, an uncle, two cousins, and a close friend. When Brown was first diagnosed with his heart condition, Franklin felt he would “stay positive and focus on the blessing.”

On Wednesday, Franklin’s voice cracked when he called Brown “a special kid.” He expressed confidence about his future.

“He’s going to be very successful,” Franklin said. “I don’t know if he wants to stay in football or whatever he decides to do, but he’s going to be unbelievably successful. I know our team is going to continue to support him and rally around him.”

Meadville (Pa.) RB Journey Brown scores 10 TDs in team's 107-90 win

— -- DUBOIS, Pa. -- Journey Brown took a journey all over a western Pennsylvania football field Friday night.

Brown, a running back for Meadville High School, broke the state record for rushing yards in a game, running for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns to help his team outlast DuBois 107-90.

Brown had 30 carries for the Bulldogs and approached the national high school rushing record of 754 yards, set by John Giannantonio of Netcong, New Jersey , in 1950.

"I'm tired," Brown told The Meadville Tribune . "I'm real tired. But it doesn't matter. I came to play for the team, not myself."

Meadville coach Ray Collins was more effusive in his praise of Brown's performance.

"He was absolutely unstoppable," Collins told the Erie Times-News . "He would hit a seam and would be gone. He ran away from the DuBois defense all night long. They were playing tough, but he was making moves out there and stutter-steps and cutting back.

Penn State Football Player Journey Brown, 21, Forced to Retire Due to Newly Diagnosed Heart Condition

"The pain of not being able to play the game I love anymore hurts and I can't explain how I am feeling right now," Journey Brown says in his announcement

journey brown record

Journey Brown is sharing the heartbreaking news of his retirement from football due to a newly diagnosed heart condition.

The Penn State star running back, 21, revealed on Facebook Wednesday night that he had been "diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which will force me to medically retire from the game of football."

"The pain of not being able to play the game I love anymore hurts and I can't explain how I am feeling right now," Brown said. "However, I can walk away from the game knowing I truly gave my all at every practice, on every down and in the locker room every day."

According to Mayo Clinic , hypertrophic cardiomyopathy "is a disease in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick (hypertrophied). The thickened heart muscle can make it harder for the heart to pump blood."

The group says that "in a small number of people with HCM, the thickened heart muscle can cause shortness of breath, chest pain or problems in the heart's electrical system, resulting in life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) or sudden death."

Brown also recalled in his announcement the very beginning of his love for football, in fourth grade. "Back then it was a game I played for fun, but when I was a sophomore in high school, my life changed, and I fell in love with football," he wrote.

"All I could think of was when can I play, how can I get better, what can I do to be a better teammate, and at that moment, football became less of a game for me and more of a lifestyle. That lifestyle put me in position to be blessed to have a chance to play football at Penn State," the athlete continued.

"My first year here was rough at times, but when you love the game of football as much as I do, you put your head down and work through scout team, Lion's Den and the waiting and watching. I finally had the opportunity to showcase what I was born to do and, hopefully, set myself up to achieve my life-long dream of playing in the NFL ," Brown went on.

"Unfortunately," he said, "the dream will never be realized" due to his condition.

Brown, a junior, began his college football career at Penn State in 2017, playing in eight games in 2018. In 2019, during his sophomore year, he started in 10 out of 13 games and made 12 touchdowns, rushing for 890 total yards. Brown also played a major role in leading the school to victory at the 2019 Cotton Bowl Classic, going on to be named MVP after rushing for 202 yards — a Penn State record for a bowl game.

Brown had been off the field this season leading up to his announcement. His condition was "discovered through a routine COVID-19 test" in September, "although it is not COVID-related," Penn State head coach James Franklin said, according to ESPN .

"We've been working through this and dealing with this as a team. Journey is one of the most popular and respected players on our team," Franklin added. "The entire organization has rallied behind Journey and his family."

The player ended his heartfelt statement on Wednesday by reflecting on the experiences he has had in the sport and expressed gratitude for everything football has given him.

"You never know when you will play your last snap , but I know I left it all out there and have no regrets, other than wishing I could step on the field one final time," Brown said. "I won't miss the game of football because it will always be a part of me."

"Thank you to my family for always supporting me, especially during these difficult past few months. Thank you to my teammates, my brothers. Thank you to my coaches. Thank you, Meadville," he concluded. "Thank you, Penn State. Thank you to everyone who believed in me. Most importantly, thank you football!"

Penn State's Journey Brown: 'I'm Actually Excited to See What Comes Next'

  • Author: Mark Wogenrich

After absorbing the initial shock that his football career likely had ended, Journey Brown asked himself a sobering question about playing again.

"If I were to die on a Penn State football field, what would that do to the team?" the former running back said in a new interview.

In his first public interview since announcing his medical retirement from football last November, Brown described the shock of learning about his career-ending heart condition, his method of processing the situation and his hope for a future beyond the game.

Brown also twice described himself with a term that he has used often to explain how he emerged from a tight-knit family in Meadville, Pa., to become one of the most exciting players in the Big Ten. And then to end a career as it was beginning.

"I'm actually excited to see what comes next for myself," Brown said. "Now that football is not in the picture, I can take all that energy in my life and put it forth to whatever I need to do.

"For whatever comes next and for whatever I choose to do and whatever seems most attractive to me, if it's in coaching or if it's in my major [recreation, park & tourism management], they just better be ready for 100-percent effort. And like I said, a reguar-degular, goofy, cool-cat guy."

In the new interview, conducted by Mitch Gerber of Penn State's Athletic Communications department, Brown discussed being diagnosed last fall with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease that causes the heart muscle to become abnormally thick. Penn State coach James Franklin announced Brown's decision to retire from football Nov. 11.

Franklin said then that the condition was discovered during a COVID-19 test in September but was not related to the virus. According to the American Heart Association , hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common form of genetic heart disease. It also is "the most common reason for sudden cardiac death in young people and athletes under the age of 35," according to the AMA. Those diagnosed with it are encouraged to make lifestyle changes, including limiting their physical activity.

Following the initial diagnosis, Brown said he received a second opinion from the Cleveland Clinic. Told once again that he shouldn't play football again, Brown went home, lay on his floor and thought about his family and future.

Brown has dealt with multiple family tragedies over the years, discussing them openly during his career at Penn State. In the interview, Brown said he didn't want to add to his family's burden.

"I keep saying it in my head: I wouldn’t want it to be anybody else," Brown said.

Brown concluded 2019 with such promise, particularly in the season's second half. He averaged 118.6 yards per game over the last five, including his 202-yard performance against Memphis in the Cotton Bowl that set a Penn State bowl record.

He entered the 2020 season among the Big Ten's top backs and with a promising future in the NFL. Even as late as Oct. 1, when he met with reporters as part of Penn State's football media day, Brown was looking forward to the season.

"I know I'm more than a football player, but this is what I felt like I was made for," Brown said in the Penn State interview.

Brown remained an integral part of the team this season, even making a celebratory television appearance during the Michigan State game. He carried Jahan Dotson across the sideline after Dotson's 81-yard punt return for a touchdown. Brown did the same after Dotson's two touchdowns the following week against Illinois.

"Everybody will tell you, this whole program, how he affected everybody, every position, on this team," Penn State running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider said during the season. "He's just an infectious person and when he comes around you, you get brighter because of the type of attitude he puts out there in front of you I don't know where it's going to go for him, but I'm happy he's here with us."

Meadville (Pa.) RB Journey Brown scores 10 TDs in team's 107-90 win

ESPN logo

DUBOIS, Pa. -- Journey Brown took a journey all over a western Pennsylvania football field Friday night.

Brown, a running back for Meadville High School, broke the state record for rushing yards in a game, running for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns to help his team outlast DuBois 107-90.

Brown had 30 carries for the Bulldogs and approached the national high school rushing record of 754 yards, set by John Giannantonio of Netcong, New Jersey, in 1950.

"Journey was even cramping up in the second quarter, but he kept stretching and hydrating to get back in the game," Collins said. "He'd get in there and just take off. He was just in the zone."

Last week in a 28-7 victory over Fairview -- a game called at halftime because of lightning -- Brown had 151 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.

Also in Friday night's game, DuBois quarterback Matt Miller, a sophomore making his first start, piled up more than 500 passing yards by halftime and finished with 741, a Pennsylvania record for passing yards in a game, and 10 touchdown passes in the losing effort.

The national record for passing yards is 764, set by David Koral of Pacific Palisades, California, in 2000.

New journey: former penn state football star finds new purpose in nascar.

  • Dustin Long ,

Journey Brown stood atop the pit wall at Daytona International Speedway, air gun clutched in his right hand, waiting to spring into action. Practice couldn’t simulate this. The roar of the cars, the buzz of the crowd, the anticipation of what was to come.

As Cup cars drove by, Brown tapped the air gun with his left hand four times. Then he surged forward and did what his mother and grandmother told him never to do when he was a child.

He ran in front of a car. And into a new life.

Brandi Seider, who drove 15 hours to be here, stood nearby and recorded the moment on her phone. She and her husband had cried with Brown after his life suddenly changed. Now, she beamed.

“I made a deal with him that his very first race, I didn’t care where it was, I was going to be here,” Seider said.

Brown’s teal-and-white fireproof uniform matched those around him on this steamy Saturday night, but he was unlike anyone else on pit road.

Underneath his uniform were tattoos that memorialized loved ones lost. A tattoo on his left bicep read Everything happens for a reason.

That one was for him.

There had been a time when he carried a football instead of an air gun. When more than 100,000 fans cheered him at Penn State. When he dazzled with one of the greatest running back performances in the Cotton Bowl. When he was headed toward a career in the NFL.

Then it was all gone.

Before the start of his junior year in State College, Brown was diagnosed with a rare heart abnormality that made football too dangerous.

Brandi’s husband, Penn State assistant head coach Ja’Juan Seider, heard the diagnosis shortly before Brown and tried to dismiss its cruelty. Brown calls Seider his second father. The ties are deep between the families. Brown also was a roommate with Seider’s son Jaden at college.

“This can’t be true,” Ja’Juan Seider thought. “Not this kid.”

It was 2020 and Brown’s life had been building toward this season at Penn State.

A Pennsylvania kid, Brown was with the state’s top college program after a high school career that saw him rush for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns in a game in 2015. The rushing total is the second-highest nationally in a high school football game, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. Only a 754-yard performance by John Giannantonio in 1950 is better.

Brown also excelled in track. He won the 2017 Class 3A state title in the 100-meter dash in a record 10.43 seconds. He broke a 32-year-old mark set by Leroy Burrell, who later won a gold medal with the U.S. 4x100-meter relay team at the 1992 Olympics.

Brown was redshirt his first year at Penn State. He shared the running backs room with Saquon Barkley, who would be the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Brown saw limited action in eight games in 2018. He showed what he could do in his redshirt sophomore season in 2019. He had four 100-yard rushing games and capped the year by running for 202 yards against Memphis in the Cotton Bowl, setting a Penn State bowl record.

He was a projected starter in 2020 and in the best shape of his life. The 5-11 Brown weighed about 230 pounds and was running his fastest times. He had hopes of entering the 2021 NFL draft.

“I felt … invincible,” he said.

But he wasn’t.

A preseason medical screening raised concerns. Additional tests confirmed the worst.

Brown was called to Penn State football coach James Franklin’s office in September. When Brown arrived, he saw Franklin joined by Ja’Juan Seider, the team’s trainer, members of the strength and conditioning staff and other team personnel.

Seider tried to hide his emotions. He had been informed only moments earlier of Brown’s condition.

“I was fighting back tears,” Seider said. “I knew I had to be strong for Journey … I had to be a shoulder that he could lean on.”

After Brown was told his football career was over, he laughed. He thought it was a joke.

He had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease that causes the walls of the heart to abnormally thicken. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can cause life-threatening irregular heart rhythms or sudden death.

Reality set in. Brown cried. Franklin hugged him.

The tears continued well after the meeting.

“I went to his dorm and cried with him,” Ja’Juan Seider said. “My wife went and cried with him. … We cried for a week or two and then we had to pick it up.”

Still, Brown thought he could come back. He was told that a hit on the football field could cause cardiac arrest and possibly kill him, but that didn’t stop his desire to play.

“This is what I love to do,” Brown said of playing football. “This is something I dreamed of. So, for me, if I were to die on the field, I couldn’t think of any better way to go out.”

Brown’s mindset soon changed.

“I was thinking of my daughter,” Brown said of Aleigha, who turns 4 in October. “I was thinking of my mom. I was thinking about my sister, my family, the people I care about, my fiancee, who was my girlfriend at the time.

“I was just thinking about everybody that I loved very much. I’ve had family members that passed away that were very close to me … It was either have my family feel the way that we always felt when somebody has left us abruptly, or I could control it and still be here and support them in different ways and still help people and find new dreams.”

Before Brown could search for new dreams, he had to let go of his dreams of playing football. Gone was the multimillion dollar NFL contract that would help take care of his family.

“I think the worst part for me, I knew I was so close to making it to my final destination with the NFL,” he said.

When he was told he wouldn’t reach that goal, Brown said it was “the lowest I’ve ever been. I’ve been in some dark places that I would never ever think about now. … I was just in a terrible place.

“I’m always positive. It was a new feeling for me to be that negative and to have those hard feelings.”

Brandi Seider said she and her husband “spent every day that we could encouraging him, praying for him and just trying to help him navigate on to the next chapter of his life. It was one of the hardest things our family had to go through.”

At age 21, Brown had to suddenly figure out what he would do next. And his identity. He had been known as football player Journey Brown for so long that it seemed as if that was his full name. Without football, he was merely Journey Brown.

“It was, more or less, who am I at this point?” he said. “I was looking for my purpose.”

His family helped him find his path.

“You’re not Journey Brown because you play football,” they told him. “You’re Journey Brown because of what you choose to do. What you do makes you you.”

Now that he understood who he was, he still had to find something to do.

A training job in California seemed like the perfect situation before it fell through earlier this year.

Brown, 24, was still searching for what to do when he got a phone call from the middle of NASCAR country.

Journey Brown at practice

Former Penn State football star Journey Brown practices pit stops at Trackhouse Racing in July 2023.

Shaun Peet, pit coach at Trackhouse Racing, had been told of a couple of athletes in the Northeast who could be possible pit crew candidates.

“We go after a certain type of person,” said Peet, who played minor league hockey before becoming a NASCAR pit crew member and then coach. “Something that matters a lot to us is kids that bring energy through the door.”

Peet was intrigued when he heard about Brown. He called and encouraged Brown to visit the team’s race shop in Concord, North Carolina.

Brown’s NASCAR knowledge was limited. He knew of Dale Earnhardt Jr. because a neighbor had a No. 88 flag. Everything else he knew about the sport came from what he saw in the movie “Talladega Nights.”

Brown admits he thought the race shop would be as cluttered and messy as a neighborhood mechanic’s shop. He was surprised to see the large clean spaces where teams worked on cars. He also hadn’t expected to see the diversity in the team’s pit crew members.

Brown found the support at Trackhouse Racing that he had from family and those at Penn State. He moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in April to pursue this opportunity.

“So he should be a millionaire and is not,” Peet said, alluding to the NFL career Brown was headed toward before his diagnosis. “He could look at the deck of cards that life handed him and be miserable and think ‘Oh, I should have been this, or I could have done this.’ And he dances through the front door every day. That is an amazing amount of perspective for a young man.

“When he came down and you saw his energy, you were like, ‘Yeah, we can win with someone like this.’”

Regardless of the energy Brown brought, if he wasn’t good enough on a pit crew, it wouldn’t have mattered.

That wasn’t a problem.

“In almost three decades of athletics, I’ve never seen someone move like this kid. Effortlessly,” Peet said, stretching out each syllable. “How he runs. How he jumps. How he does everything.”

Then the team gave Brown an air gun, a few tips and had him change a tire.

“Without question our best first day we’ve ever seen on campus here,” Peet said.

As a development pit crew member, though, there’s no guarantee of how often he’ll be in a race. Trackhouse Racing provides the pit crews not only for the cars of Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez but also for the cars of AJ Allmendinger and Justin Haley at Kaulig Racing. Those pit crew lineups are set.

Trackhouse Racing’s philosophy is that its developmental tire changers only work with the single lug nut on the wheels on Cup cars. That means those developmental pit crew members won’t work Xfinity or Craftsman Truck Series races because those series have wheels with five lug nuts. That’s a different technique.

That left Brown with only practice until last weekend when Kaulig Racing entered a third car at Daytona for Chandler Smith. Brown was put on that crew.

He made his NASCAR debut at Daytona.

Journey Brown practice 3

Penn State football star Journey Brown during pit crew practice at Trackhouse Racing in July 2023.

Brown can compete as a tire changer in NASCAR because medication regulates his heart rate. The work pit crew members do comes in short bursts.

He can be the same high-caliber athlete he was in football. He also takes the same approach as when he was a star running back.

At Penn State, coaches harped about paying attention to details. After Brown completed his first pit stop at Daytona, he was thinking about the details of the stop.

“I’m just ready to get the next one out, so I can be perfect,” he said.

Peet said he saw the self-criticism a couple of days after the Daytona race when he asked Brown how he did. Brown said he could have been better in many areas.

“We go see the film and we look at the times, his times are in keeping with everyone they’re racing,” Peet said. “A lot of times we’ve had kids that I’ll ask them how how the night went and (they say) ‘Oh, it went good.’ Then there’s a phone call coming in Monday morning because we had a loose wheel.

“Whereas Journey had a good night and was instantly self-critical to the point where I thought, ‘Oh boy, I’m getting a phone call today.’”

Peet didn’t. There was no loose wheel to report.

The ability, attitude and potential Brown has leads Peet to say that “this kid is going to be the best (tire) changer in NASCAR. And I believe it when he says it. … This kid, he does the things that make him successful.”

Questioned about Brown becoming the sport’s best tire changer, Peet admits that it’s too much pressure to put on Brown but says: “His goal is going to be one of the best in NASCAR.”

It’s something Brown could have never imagined thinking years ago. Instead, his focus was on football.

“When I was playing ball,” Brown said, “the way I felt with my body, my mental (outlook), I felt like I was Superman.

“But now when I have a heart condition and I know I have kind of limitations, so to speak, it’s more like (I’m) Batman, a more realistic type of superhero.”

Brown notes that Batman has to be more resourceful because he cannot match Superman’s abilities, but that doesn’t mean Batman can’t be impactful.

“I feel like for me, that’s what I do in my everyday life,” Brown said. “I just find new ways and strategies to tackle new challenges.”

What a journey for Penn State football star-turned-NASCAR pit crew member Brown | Bohls

journey brown record

  • Journey Brown went from a football star running back at Penn State to a rookie tire changer with a NASCAR team.
  • Forced to medically retire from football, 25-year-old has his heart broken but has come back with a different life change.
  • Brown has always rooted for the Longhorns and considers Texas quarterback Colt McCoy "best quarterback ever."

Journey Brown couldn’t be more appropriately named.

The son of Buffy Brown and Larry Quinn was given his first name because his mother told him she’d been through two years of personal “trials and tribulations” that he didn’t specifically detail.

“She just said she’d been through a long journey to have me,” Brown said this week.

Like mother, like son.

The remarkably upbeat, 25-year-old Pennsylvania native isn’t sure of his eventual destination. Who is? But he’s gone from eye-popping running back in Meadville, Pa., to budding sensation for Penn State to rookie member of a NASCAR pit crew for a race team that will compete in this weekend’s Cup Series EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas.

Oh, yeah, and with a potentially deadly heart condition that derailed his promising football future in between.

His has been a wilder ride than that of Zach Smith, the driver of Spire Motorsports’ No. 71 Chevrolet Camaro, for whom Brown will be working Sunday.

On a weekend when he once assumed he’d be preparing for another NFL season, he’ll be changing front tires for the Spires Motorsports team.

An unexpected diagnosis forces a decision

His star was certainly rising in college football as one of the premier backs in the Big Ten, and his stock really took off after he ran for a Penn State bowl game-record 202 yards as the MVP of the 2019 Cotton Bowl against Memphis. He averaged 6.9 yards a carry in that game and had run for 890 yards and scored 12 touchdowns that season. He was approaching his redshirt junior season that fall and had a life full of joy and promise.

But a quick summons to his coach’s office in September 2020 took him by surprise. He thought to himself that he hadn’t missed any classes or gotten into any trouble. But when he arrived to find his head coach, trainer, strength and conditioning coach, position coach, and two very serious-looking doctors there, he quickly understood the gravity of the situation.

He’d been to the doctor’s office before, same as all the Penn State players during the height of the pandemic when the Big Ten mandated safety precautions for all players and demanded EKGs and MRIs for any hint of illnesses. When one of Brown’s four roommates contracted COVID-19, he got tested.

He even razzed a group of doctors in the lobby afterward and joked to them, “My heart looking healthy and beautiful?”

When they said it was uncertain, he took the news pretty hard. He’d always been told by his grandma Helen Wescott, with whom he had grown up alongside his mom and sisters Bailey and Music, to trust his gut. So he became very uneasy.

A week or so later, when James Franklin beckoned him to his office, he was on edge. That’s when he was told he had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the walls of the heart and a big risk for cardiac arrest.

As a football player, he was done. He medically retired.

'Football was my world. Still is.'

While Franklin called it “heartbreaking,” Brown took it equally hard.

“I was in shock,” Brown recalled. “I was at my peak. Well, no, because I knew I was only getting better. I was very angry, very sad. A lot of emotions took over my mind. Football was my world. Still is. That was my whole identity at that time. I had to figure out who I was.”

A couple of months later, he was told he ought to look into NASCAR. What he knew about car racing was limited to the Dale Earnhardt Jr. flag for the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro that his neighbor in Meadville had flown. That and Will Ferrell’s “Talladega Nights.”

To be honest, this driven young man all but ascribed to Ricky Bobby’s philosophy in life: If you ain’t first, you’re last.

Journey Brown doesn’t do last, but he knew he had to find a way to help provide for himself and his 4-year-old daughter, Aleigha.

He had no idea his travels would have taken this ambitious young man to a profession he never even dreamed about. But instead of worrying about a 4.4 time in the 40, he’s consumed with switching out a front tire during a NASCAR pit stop in 9 seconds.

“If you can do it in 9 seconds, you’re fine,” Brown said. “If you do it in 8, you’re phenomenal.”

And if it takes you 10 seconds to make the change?

“I’d be fired,” he said, chuckling.

Finding a new team role in NASCAR

His football career has better prepared him for this life because NASCAR actively recruits football players and other athletes for the quick reactions and athleticism required of pit crew work. The average pit crew member makes about $39,000 a year.

So now, after pitting 15 races last year and five this year, the young man can envision becoming the next Danny Myers, instead of the next Saquon Barkely, who was actually once his teammate with the Nittany Lions.

Myers, of course, once was a leader of the pit crew of the late stock car legend Dale Earnhardt Sr. as part of the famed “Junk Yard Dogs,” who helped him win his 76 races, 34 of them at Daytona, where he lost his life in that tragic crash in 2001.

"Journey is an incredible athlete, even better human being. He has picked up tire changing as fast or faster than anyone we ever had in the program," said Shaun Peet, vice president of Culture & Pit Crew. "His strength is attitude. Life has dealt this kid a pretty rough hand, and still he comes through the door every day dancing. This kid is a light, and everyone who is around him comes away from him for the better."

Brown still longs for the days when he played running back and once saw his NFL draft stock soar before the game was taken away from him.

He knew little about HCM, a thickening of the heart walls that limits blood flow. The condition is found in 1 of 200 to 500 Americans and is very often genetic in nature.

For a long time, Brown thought he was positioned for greatness in the NFL. After all, he’d rushed for 7,000 yards and 106 touchdowns in his prep career before going to Penn State, where his career was off to a blazing start. The 5-foot-11, 216-pound back had been a three-star prospect and the No. 15 recruit in Pennsylvania, according to 247Sports, and people underestimated his drive and passion.

He’ll be in Austin this weekend for the first time, but he wishes it’d been much earlier. After all, even though he grew up far away in Pennsylvania, he always had a soft spot for the Longhorns.

“I’m a big Texas Longhorn fan,” Brown said. “I was for the longest time. I thought it’d be pretty cool to play for them.”

When he first laid eyes on Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley at his grandma’s house and watched them do their magic on a football field, he was smitten.

“I just fell in love with the Longhorns,” he said. “Still, to this day, they’re my second-favorite team. I think Colt McCoy’s the best quarterback who ever lived.”

Despite that type of hero worship, Brown never came close to becoming a Longhorn. He scored 10 touchdowns and ran for a staggering 722 yards in one game that ended 107-90 in 2015, but Texas never called.

“They didn’t recruit me,” he said, laughing. “They’ve got enough players down there to fill the whole roster. There’s no space for a Pennsylvania kid.”

There is on the Spire Motorsports race team. He was a bit “standoffish” when first apprised that he might be perfect for pit crew work but made the trek to North Carolina to audition at Trackhouse and was blown away by the professionalism. And even the ultraclean garages.

“It was crazy,” Brown remembered. “It was state of the art. Just mind-blowing. Hey, I’m from Pennsylvania, where we have football, wrestling and basketball.

“No offense to the NASCAR commuity, but I just thought people were down here drinking beer and changing tires and racing cars around the circle. But it’s a lot more than cracking beers and having a good time. I can tell you that for sure.”

And who’s the reigning Patrick Mahomes of pit crew members?

“i’d say Marshall McFadden,” Brown said, “because he’s on my team.”

And Brown’s all about being on a team. His journey continues.

WNBA’s Lexie Brown drops eye-opening Caitlin Clark vs. Paige Bueckers claim

D uring a conversation on the Gil’s Arena Show Tuesday, Los Angeles Sparks player Lexie Brown delved into a hypothetical dilemma poised by Gilbert Arenas if the Indiana Fever had to choose between Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers in the 2024 WNBA Draft .

Brown pointed out the unique dynamics of the Fever’s roster as a potential factor in their hypothetical decision, highlighting the presence of scoring leader Kelsey Mitchell.

“The makeup of the Fever team is very interesting. I don’t know if they’re going to bring Caitlin to be more of a distributor. She’s obviously going to score, but they got a lot of scoring prowess on that team,” Brown said.

Despite the team’s already strong offensive capabilities, Brown leaned towards Clark, citing her significant marketability.

“I think it is a tough decision … if I’m the Fever, I’m still going with Clark just because of her name, the weight it holds right now,” she said, acknowledging Clark’s potential to make an immediate impact.

Caitlin Clark declares for WNBA Draft after breaking NCAA scoring record

Caitlin Clark, the Iowa women’s basketball star, has had a season for the ages, breaking the NCAA Division I women’s scoring record, the all-time women’s scoring record for a major school, and the NCAA Division I all-time scoring record. She announced her entry into the WNBA Draft in February.

Averaging 32.2 points, 8.7 assists, and 7.4 rebounds per game, Clark led her team to a 25-4 regular-season record, showcasing not just her scoring ability but also her all-around game.

Paige Bueckers wants to see UConn journey through

Paige Bueckers announced her decision to stay at UConn for a fifth season, a move that surprised many who expected her to declare for the WNBA Draft.

After an injury sidelined her for an entire season, Bueckers returned to lead the Huskies with averages of 20.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Her decision to return highlights her dedication to UConn and her desire to complete her college career on her terms.

The Final Four matchup: Clark vs. Bueckers

The Final Four matchup between Iowa and UConn women’s basketball is not just a game but a historic clash between two of the most talented players in women’s college basketball. This game represents the last college meeting between Clark and Bueckers , setting the stage for an epic showdown.

Their previous matchups in 2021 and 2023 favored UConn, with Bueckers’ team winning both games. However, Clark has grown significantly since then, leading the NCAA in scoring and setting multiple records. On the other hand, Bueckers, after recovering from her injury, has been instrumental in UConn’s recent success, showcasing her leadership. The Final Four game promises to be a memorable one, highlighting the skill and legacy of both players.

As the WNBA Draft approaches and the Final Four looms, the basketball world is eager to see how these two athletes will fare in their final college showdown and how their careers will unfold in the future.

Jaylen Brown reached 10,000 career points in the third quarter of the Boston Celtics’ 124-107 win over the Portland Trail Blazers at TD Garden on Sunday night.

WHO: Boston Celtics at Milwaukee Bucks

WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday

TELEVISION: TNT

The 27-year-old is the 15th player in Celtics history to reach the milestone.

“I don’t wanna skip over that. It’s been a great journey. Even though the journey is still going, you just take the moments to appreciate all of the hard work and effort that has gone into getting to this point,” Brown said after the game. “I’m incredibly grateful and I’m looking forward to the future. … And I’m looking forward to just continue to grow, continue to improve, and to maximize my potential.

“It’s been a lot of hard work and effort. But I’m extremely blessed at the same time, so I don’t take that for granted. … It means a lot. It means a lot of hard work. It’s been a great journey, and we’re still looking forward to what’s next. Hopefully another 10,000 in me.”

Once the milestone became official, Brown received a loud ovation and cheers from the TD Garden crowd. He acknowledged those in attendance, and said it served as encouragement to help him become an even better player.

“(There are) JB fans who’ve stayed in my corner since Day 1. I feel that love and I like to just show that love right back. There’s a lot of people in Boston who’ve supported my career … and I’m grateful for that,” Brown said. “That encourages me to just keep getting better. That encourages me to keep improving and proving the critics wrong.” Advertisement

Celtics Coach Joe Mazzulla praised Brown, noting it’s cool from his end to coach someone when they reach an important milestone.

“A lot,” Mazzulla said when asked how much the milestone meant. “Just because of the type of guy that he is (and) the hard work that he puts in and really the growth he’s shown this year. … I know he’s happy about that. but I know even when he achieves those things he’s never satisfied. He deserves that because of hard work he puts in.”

WHEN THE CELTICS traded for Kristaps Porzingis last summer, it was for a chance to add a talented big man that could transform the roster. But there was at least one clear question: How would Porzingis look in the NBA playoffs?

Well, those questions will be answered in the next few weeks. The Celtics still have four regular-season games to get through, then move on to the most important part of the season. As Porzingis has showcased all season, he’ll be a crucial part of the equation. It’s why Porzingis is itching to prove he can perform in the playoffs.

“Last year, I was sitting back home in Latvia, just following the results and watching the games and stuff,” Porzingis said after the Celtics beat the Blazers. “I’m thinking to myself like, ‘Of course it’s nice to finish the season early, but there’s nothing else to do.’ What is there better to do than to play basketball? Nothing. Yeah, you can go for a little vacation. But this is what I love to do.”

While Porzingis is in his eighth season in the NBA, he’s only played in 10 playoff games, all with the Mavericks. Those games were a mixed bag, and the last time he played in the playoffs, he struggled in a first-round loss to the Clippers in 2021.

But Porzingis has a great chance to rewrite his own playoff narratives starting in a few weeks. He’s arguably in the ideal scenario to showcase his talents, but game plans will be focused on stopping Jayson Tatum and Brown. Of course, the game slows down and is much more physical, so there will be adjustments. But the Celtics are playoff-tested – all that’s left is to get to the NBA Finals and win it all this time.

The Celtics are going to be the clear favorites in the East. They’ve been dominant all season, and even though they’ve had plenty of success the past two seasons, this team is clearly the best of the bunch.

“I love basketball so much – especially playing here and playing in the postseason is going to be incredible,” Porzingis said. “I’m looking forward to that. Of course it’s going to be hard, it’s going to be tough physically and mentally. But if we want to achieve what we want to achieve, then it’s not going to be easy. We have to come up with that, for sure.”

Brown hogged the limelight after he scored 140 runs off 57 balls with 10 fours and 12 sixes against the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL Challenger earlier this year. He also smashed the joint second-fastest hundred in the history of the tournament .

Mix refined, white sugar and water in a 1:4 ratio, boil it and cool it, and put it out for the birds in feeder. Don't use any food coloring or sweetening agents, as it could harm the birds, the Audubon says.

The Audubon also recommends the following for feeding hummingbirds:

  • Empty and clean the filter once a week in cold weather, twice a week in hot weather
  • Put the feeder out about a week before the birds usually arrive in your area
  • Avoid using pesticides or dish detergent

If you're not having any luck seeing hummingbirds at your feeder, the audubon society suggests hanging it nearby red or orange tubular flower plants, which they are naturally attracted to.
