Our 9 days Kashmir trip itinerary with family

“Kashmir is not just a place, It is an emotion that everyone wants to experience!!!!”

kashmir trip with parents

“You have got Kashmir and Himalayas. You are the richest when it comes to natural beauty!” – While we were playing in the snow at Mount Titlis on our trip to Switzerland, our guide remarked vividly. Years later, I can now comprehend the statement completely. As I relive every moment of our 9 days trip to Kashmir . After hearing, reading and witnessing the beauty of Kashmir through books, media and our own parents, we waited for years to finally be able to experience this “heaven on earth”. There is for sure, that every Indian wants to visit this paradise at least once in his lifetime. We have compiled this complete guide for a trip to Kashmir that will help you plan your trip to Kashmir in a smooth, hassle free manner. And here we bring to you our 9 days Kashmir trip itinerary with family.

kashmir trip with parents

This Kashmir trip itinerary for family is based on the trip to Kashmir that we took with our family in April, 2022. It can vary for others based on their requirement. So, we will provide some alternate itineraries towards the end of the post. To get the details of how to make the hotel bookings in Kashmir, how to book a cab in Kashmir, where to stay in Kashmir, what to eat in Kashmir, how to go shopping in Kashmir and even general tourist scams in Kashmir, read our upcoming comprehensive Kashmir travel guide. Day 1 : Arrival in Srinagar

We took a flight to Srinagar from Bangalore. It was a connecting flight. As there was no suitable budget direct flights from Bangalore to Srinagar operating at this point. We had a flight from Bangalore to Delhi and then another flight from Delhi to Srinagar. We reached Srinagar early in the morning, around 8:00am. The April-June time frame is peak tourist season in Kashmir. So, the influx of tourist is high. There was a huge queue at the airport exit, after navigating it we took a cab to our hotel, Walisons Hotel, Srinagar .

Since we had a night flight, and we arrived early at our hotel, our rooms were not ready. So, we headed straight to the Tulip Gardens near Dal Lake . Since, the Tulips were in full bloom at this point, we didn’t want the chance to miss witnessing them in full bloom. We dropped our luggage at the hotel. And then requested the driver who dropped us from airport to hotel to take us to the Tulip Gardens. By 8:30am, we reached the gardens. There was no queue at the ticket counter and no rush inside.

We thoroughly enjoyed the gardens. And then by 10:00am, we headed back to the Tulip Garden parking lot. Where we had our late breakfast.

While visiting the Tulip Gardens of Kashmir, I couldn’t help but draw a comparison in my mind with the Keukenhof Tulip Gardens of Netherlands which I had visited on my trip to Europe, from Amsterdam. Each one has it’s own surreal beauty. And I couldn’t really tell which one is better than the other. So, I will say, visit both ! (I am always greedy when it comes to travel :D)

After spending considerable time witnessing the tulips and having some picture perfect instagram moments with them, we returned back to our hotel. This time, our rooms were ready. We shifted to the rooms to catch up on some much needed sleep. And retired to bed after an early dinner later.

Note: You can also arrive in Srinagar by road from Jammu. Jammu is well connected with rest of India through road and rail network.

Day 2 : Places to visit in Srinagar

Today, post breakfast, we started our exploration of Srinagar – our one day of sightseeing in Srinagar . From this day onwards we had booked a dedicated cab till the end of our journey.

The first site we visited was Pari Mahal. It is a beautiful garden around a 7 storied building. But the best part is the views of Srinagar, Dal Lake and the surrounding mountains that you get from the garden. Take a virtual tour of Pari Mahal with us in this vlog :

Next we headed to the Mughal Gardens of Srinagar. We visited Chash-me-Shahi Garden and Nishat Bagh. Although there are other gardens also in Srinagar including Shalimar Garden, after visiting 2 mughal gardens of Srinagar, we felt we had enough 🙂 . Since, all these gardens look alike beyond a point.

So, next around 4:00pm, we headed for Shikara ride. After much hassle and bargaining, we and the shikara owners came to an agreement. And finally we had a 2.5 hrs Shikara ride on the Dal Lake . Which included visiting all the famous spots around the lake, stopping for tea and snacks and finally visiting the shops on the bank of the Dal Lake.

Day 3 : Srinagar to Pahalgam Transfer

Today, post breakfast, we traveled from Srinagar to Pahalgam . We reached our hotel in Pahalgam, the Oswal Cottage , by afternoon. And had lunch. Post this, we enjoyed the beautiful sceneries around. And just relaxed. However, some of our friends headed to explore Bisaran Valley. It takes around 3 hours for the complete round trip. Although Bisaran Valley is only 6km from where we stayed. But the terrain is rough. And only accessible through a horse ride. Since we were with kids and moreover our younger one hates any animal interactions, so, we didn’t go. Although if you are not constrained like us, I will highly recommend visiting the Bisaran Valley. Because it is very beautiful.

Day 4: Pahalgam to Aru Valley, Betab Valley and Chandwari

Today we has another action packed day in our Kashmir trip itinerary with kids. As, we spent the day visiting Aru Valley, Betab Valley and Chandwari from Pahalgam . These are the most famous and beautiful valleys around Pahalgam. Which have completely different charms in different seasons.

When we arrived here in April, the spring was in full bloom and the valley was on the verse of welcoming summer. Green meadows spread in front of the snow clapped mountain peaks reminded me of some of the beautiful scenes we had encountered in Tuscany while doing day trips from Florence when we spent almost a week in Italy.

Day 5: Pahalgam to Gulmarg Transfer

Today, post breakfast, we started for Gulmarg from Pahalgam. Watch our road trip experience from Pahalgam to Gulmarg on this vlog . Actually, Gulmarg is the most famous ski resort destination in Asia and India. By the time we booked our accommodation, almost everything in Gulmarg was either full or exorbitantly charged. So, we booked our stay at Hotel Pineview in Tangmarg which is almost 10km before Gulmarg. Nevertheless, we reached here by noon.We had our lunch on the way. After reaching Tangmarg, our driver connected us with a guide who was going to accompany us to the Gondola ride.

kashmir trip with parents

The guide further took us to a shop where we hired shoes, jackets and bought gloves and caps for all of us to be used the next day. Also, we rented a vehicle to take us till the Gondola. Since our regular cab drivers prefered to return back to Srinagar. The shoes were to be packed and placed in the car the next morning. So, booking them in advance really saved our time.

Day 6: Gulmarg Gondola Ride

Finally arrived that day of our Kashmir Trip itinerary with family which the kids were waiting for since day 1 – the day of Gondola Ride in Gulmarg . Today, we woke up really early in the morning. And started around 8:00am from our hotel in Tangmarg for the Gulmarg Gondola point. We had pre-booked our Gondola ride online through this government site. Also, we had booked for both phase 1  and phase 2  . Since when we reached here, the snow in phase 1 had reduced a lot. After arriving at the parking for Gulmarg Gondola, we walked to the Gondola and reached there just in time, around 8:30am. Still there was already a huge winding queue. And it was only at 10:30 that we reached the Gondola cable car.

kashmir trip with parents

As we sat into the Gondola and started our journey up the mountains, I couldn’t help recall the same experience scaling the heights of Mount Titlis on a day trip from Lucerne with Aashi. Who was precisely the same age at that time as Ishi is now. And once we reached the top, we had a gala time playing in the snow. The memories are as fresh as if it happened yesterday. I guess that’s why we need to spend more on experiences and less on material things.

We reached phase 1 in around 10 mins. But we decided to go to Phase 2 first. Because this year, the summer started early and there was not much snow in phase 1 left. So we went to Phase 2. However, the weather soon turned our plans upside down. It started with a snowfall and then turned into a snow storm. I and my friend decided to return back to the Gondola station with the kids. As the temperature dropped to -5 degrees and the kids started to feel cold. However Abhishek and 2 other friends decided to take the plunge and enjoy snow activities.

Day 7: Gulmarg to Srinagar Transfer

After having a gala day at the Gulmarg Gondola, we started back for Srinagar from Gulmarg on the 7th day of our 9 days Kashmir Trip Itinerary with kids. We started post breakfast from our hotel in Tangmarg, Hotel Pineview . And reached our houseboat, Chicago Group of Houseboats in Srinagar by lunch time. Yes, today we were going to experience staying on a houseboat in Srinagar . The access to the houseboat was through a short Shikara ride from ghat no 9 on Dal Lake. After reaching the houseboat and dumping our luggage, we again took another shikara to return back to the main road for lunch. Since lunch was not provided on the Shikara. After having lunch, we just relaxed in our houseboat in Srinagar. And prepared for the next day when we planned to have a day trip .

Day 8: Srinagar to Doodhpathri day trip

On the second last day of our 9 days Kashmir trip itinerary with family, we embarked on a day trip to Doodhpathri from Srinagar. Although for the past 2-3 days we were having a tussle to select between Sonmarg and Doodhpathri.

kashmir trip with parents

Sonmarg is yet another winter destinations in Srinagar. It witnesses a lot of snowfall in the winters. So much so that you can only travel here with special chained vehicles that can navigate snow. However, the snow cover had reduced when we visited here in mid-April. But the temperature was still very low here.

Doodhpathri on the other hand is a lush green meadow. It was not that chilling cold, not that crowded and touristy also. So, finally we picked Doodhpathri over Sonmarg. And then had a wonderful day basking in the sun in one of the most beautiful valleys of Kashmir.

Day 9: Flight back from Srinagar

Finally came the day to say goodbye to Kashmir. We boarded our morning flight from Srinagar and embarked on our way back home. With memories of a lifetime. However, we want to come back to Kashmir. This time in the winter season. To witness the completely transformed landscape of Kashmir. And the winter wonderland that it is called. Hope that materialises soon.

Alternate Kashmir trip itinerary with family

The 9 days Kashmir trip itinerary with kids that we did was a really relaxed one. Since we were traveling with little kids, we didn’t want to overexert ourselves. But, if you are pressed by time on your Kashmir trip itinerary with family, or want to cover alternate things, here are some alternate Kashmir trip itinerary with family options for you. Some of these are aggressive on timelines, you can opt them when traveling solo, with friends or backpacking.

Kashmir Trip Itinerary Option 1 : 5 days trip to Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg

kashmir trip with parents

  • Arrive in Srinagar in the morning. Get an early checkin at your hotel if possible. If not, at least dump your luggage. And head to the Tulip Gardens. Spend couple of hours here. Have lunch. And post lunch take a Sikara ride on the Dal Lake. Stay near Dal Lake if possible.
  • Srinagar to Pahalgam day trip. Start early in the morning by 7:00am, reach Pahalgam by 9:30am. From here, take a day trip to explore Aru Valley, Betab Valley and Chandanwari. Return to Srinagar by 6:30 or 7:00pm in the evening
  • Srinagar to Gulmarg day trip. Today, go straight to the Gulmarg Gondola from Srinagar. Pre book the gondola ride tickets. Reach here by 10:00am. And then enjoy the snow activities in Gulmarg. For a complete detail of how to book the Gondola and how to enjoy your day in Gulmarg, read this post.
  • Do a day trip from Srinagar to Sonmarg today.
  • Spend half the day sightseeing in Srinagar. Visit some of the famous gardens, Pari Mahal and some other attractions. Post noon, checkout from your hotel and start back home.

While staying all 5 nights in Srinagar, you can spend a couple on a houseboat – a different kind of experience.

Kashmir Trip Itinerary Option 2 : 3 days visiting Pahalgam and Gulmarg

kashmir trip with parents

If you are really pressed by time, I will suggest, skip Srinagar. And head straight to Pahalgam and Gulmarg. Do a day trip to each of these from Srinagar. And then head back to your home on the third day. Of course, you will miss the Sikara ride on the Dal lake and the other attractions that Srinagar has got to offer. But then you have to make a choice when you are that limited by time.

Kashmir Trip Itinerary Option 3 : Srinagar, Pahalgam, Kargil and Ladakh

kashmir trip with parents

This is a very different itinerary than the rest two I proposed above. If you are visiting Kashmir in summer months, like June, there is not much of snow to enjoy. So, you can altogether avoid the snow destinations like Sonmarg or Gulmarg. Spend the first couple of days in Srinagar enjoying the local sites. And then do a day trip to Pahalgam from Srinagar on the third day. On the fourth day head to Kargil. And from there, embark on a trip to Ladakh for the next 5 days!! Making the most of your time in Kashmir. And combining two most exotic destinations of India into one single trip!!

Kashmir , a land of unimaginable beauty, is cradled between the mighty Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. The bracing air of the valley offers a wholesome treat as you sip a cup of Kahwah and enjoy the glorious view.

Offering a variety of experiences, a trip to Kashmir with your family will enrich your mind. If you are looking for places to visit in Kashmir, here’s a curated 7-day Kashmir itinerary for you:

DAY 1: Arrive in Srinagar

A famous tourist place in Kashmir is the serene city of Srinagar. Home to the beautiful Mughal gardens; you can spend the morning admiring acres of exotic flowers. Enjoy a local Kashmiri lunch and head out for a Shikara ride at Nehru Park. In the evening, book a stay in a boathouse on Dal Lake for a truly mesmerizing experience.

DAY 2: Sightseeing in Srinagar

One night is not enough to take in the beauty of Dal Lake, especially if you are staying in a boathouse on the lake. Known as Srinagar’s jewel, Dal Lake offers more than just splendid houseboats. A source of commercial operations, there is a unique floating flower and vegetable market that can be explored early in the morning. Have lunch at the in-house restaurant and check out the local spice and woollen market in Srinagar. Later, make it a point to watch the beautiful sunset over the lake before you call it a night.

DAY 3: Head to Gulmarg

A skier’s paradise, Gulmarg is a must-visit spot in every tourist’s Kashmir itinerary. From vibrant flowers to snow-capped mountains, Gulmarg is paradise for adventure buffs. Stop for lunch at one of the local dhabas and if the weather is favourable, you can go mountain biking, skiing, trekking, or take gondola rides for a panoramic view of the valley. It gets dark early, so it is best to enjoy the view with your family after dinner, over laughter and conversation.

DAY 4: Move on to Sonmarg

Sonmarg, a hill station located to the northeast of Srinagar, is another popular tourist place in Kashmir. Set at an altitude of 9186 feet against scenic meadows and a clear blue sky, the name literally translates to ‘Meadow of Gold’. After lunch, do check out the Kheer Bhawani Temple located in the middle of a natural spring and the Gadsar Lake that is at 16,400 feet and remains frozen throughout the year. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains and alpine flowers, Sonmarg also has beautiful walnut orchards that you definitely must visit.

DAY 5: Destination Pahalgam

A favourite tourist place in Kashmir, Pahalgam is a small hill station that embodies the beauty of Kashmir. Also known as the Valley of Shepherds, Pahalgam is perched at the intersection of the Lidder and Sheshnag rivers. This tiny town has the beautiful Baisaran Hills that are just the place for a trek with your children. An ideal picnic spot; it’s a great place to enjoy a meal with your family after a rejuvenating trek. You can also visit Mamaleshwar Temple, Kolahoi Glacier, and Betaab Valley later in the evening (before sunset) for a picturesque view of the valley.

Chandanwari

DAY 6: Pahalgam to Srinagar via Chandanwari

Photo of Chandanwari, Pahalgam by Inside Out with Rahul Yuvi

At a distance of only 15 km from Pahalgam is Chandanwari, a glacier point and the starting point of the sacred Amarnath Yatra. Located at an elevation, it’s an offbeat destination to stop and have breakfast in the lap of nature. After a 30-minute detour, you can go on with your journey back to Srinagar. Spend the night in a houseboat (if you haven’t already) or a hotel in the city and relish a local meal. Try the authentic mutton rogan josh with the traditional bread and finish off with the world-famous Kashmiri phirni for dessert.

DAY 7: Relax and check out

Have a hearty breakfast at your boathouse or hotel and depart on your return journey!

The Kashmir Valley is resplendent with vibrant orchards, lakes, and snow-clad mountains.

How to plan a trip to Kashmir? Best Time to Visit Kashmir

When is the best time to visit Kashmir? There is actually no straight answer to this question because it will depend on what kind of trip you were looking forward to.

If you want to see snow, January and February are ideal times. If you want to see lush green views, September will be the best time. For a honeymoon trip, I will recommend April and September.

If you want to see flowers and the Tulip Garden, you should plan for April. If you want to see Apple orchards, August and September is the best time to go.

For photography, a trip in the post-monsoon season will be best. For budget travelers, August and November are good times to go.

This however is just a brief overview. For a more detailed and month-by-month breakdown of this information, please take a look at When is the Best Time to Visit Kashmir .

Mobile Network and Data Connectivity

BSNL has the widest network in Kashmir but Airtel is better in terms of the quality of the network. Jio works decently well but the services of Vodafone and Idea are not that great.

The important thing that you should know is that only postpaid connections work in the valley. Irrespective of which network you were on, your phone will be dead as soon as you enter Kashmir if it was a prepaid connection.

But if it was a postpaid phone, you would have good reception and data connectivity in tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. If you went a little offbeat, your phone may or may not work depending on the service provider.

I have covered this topic in great detail in another article Mobile Network and Data Connectivity in Kashmir that you can take a look at. I have given a region-wise breakdown of the network reception in this post.

Kashmir Trip Cost

How much will a Kashmir trip cost? This will depend on a lot of factors like the number of travelers, duration of the trip, mode of commute, personal preferences, etc. But with that being said, there is still an average per-person cost that can be calculated.

Take a look at this post – How to Calculate the Total Cost of Kashmir Trip . While I cannot give you the exact cost of the Kashmir trip, I can still give you an idea of how you can calculate your own Kashmir trip budget. That is the information that I covered in this article.

Using the numbers below, you will get a fairly good estimate of how much you will end up spending in the valley. These are some of the minimum expenditures that you will end up incurring for accommodation, taxi, food, shopping, etc.

Clothes to Pack for Kashmir Trip

The next important question will be related to your packing. The clothes that you need for visiting Kashmir will vary according to the season and month of your trip. It will also depend on the places you have in mind to visit and your mode of commute as well.

I will recommend taking a look at Clothes for Kashmir Trip – Things to Pack for Kashmir Trip for more information on this aspect. In this post, I have talked in detail about the kind of clothes that you should be packing for a trip to Kashmir in different seasons.

Places to Visit in Kashmir

Now let us take a look at the tourist destinations in Kashmir, places that you just cannot afford to miss. These are the destinations that will become the very highlight of your journey.

I am adding Srinagar first to the list because that is where you will have to go first. Srinagar will be your base to explore the beautiful valleys of Kashmir.

But is it just that? The answer is no.  It is not just a base to explore Kashmir but rather a place that deserves to be explored, a place of both natural and man-made beauty.

Shah Jahan a long time ago aptly called Kashmir the paradise on earth, and Srinagar is the heart of that paradise. With its serene blue lakes and magnificent gardens ringed by an Arc of Majestic Himalayas, it is a picture-perfect town that looks straight out of a painting.

There is just so much to see here and so much to do. This I believe is the very reason that despite all the unrest and tensions, Srinagar continues to remain one of the most visited tourist destinations in our country.

Gulmarg in my opinion is the biggest tourist attraction in Kashmir. Known as the meadow of flowers, it is a heavenly place to tread in that offers mesmerizing landscapes and an enthralling possibility of various adventure activities.

Such is the beauty of this tiny hamlet that it attracts people from all over the country throughout the year. It is possibly one of those destinations where the tourist season never ends.

From families to adventure enthusiasts, Gulmarg has a lot to offer everyone. It not only draws tourists from other parts of the country but also is a favorite weekend getaway for the local Kashmiris as well.

Below is a list of articles that I have posted on Gulmarg. I will recommend taking a look at these before visiting this beautiful little town.

If you were planning a winter trip to Gulmarg, you may want to check out the video below. This was shot during one of my trips to Gulmarg in the month of January.

The next destination that you must visit during your Kashmir trip is Sonamarg. The place is easily accessible, remains open for most of the year, has plenty of hotels, offers amazing views, and is perfect for all kinds of trips.

Public transport is also easily available. There is a daily bus between Srinagar and Sonamarg. Other than that, shared cabs also travel on the route regularly.

For accommodation, there is a wide range of hotels to choose from, both for budget travelers as well as someone looking for a luxury stay. Read on to find out more.

Below is a list of articles that provide the information that you need to know in order to plan your trip.

  • Taxi Rates in Sonamarg | Sonmarg Local Taxi Rates

If you were planning on visiting Sonamarg in the winter season, you can also take a look at the video below to get more details on the topic.

The name Pahalgam needs no introduction. It is one of the most visited destinations of Kashmir, one that receives tourists all year long. No trip to Kashmir is complete unless Pahalgam is a part of the itinerary.

Located at a distance of about 100 kilometers from Srinagar, Pahalgam is best known for its awe-inspiring vistas, lush green meadows, dense forests, and pristine waters. The place is also noted for the annual pilgrimage to the shrine Amarnath Yatra that starts here in July and August.

In the articles below, I have talked about how a trip to Pahalgam can be planned, places you should visit there, accommodation, public transport, and several other useful tips.

  • Pahalgam – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary
  • What to see in Pahalgam – Sightseeing in Pahalgam
  • Best Time to Visit Pahalgam – When to go to Pahalgam

But in my opinion, the actual fun of visiting Pahalgam is in the winter season. This is when the natural beauty of this place is at its best. Take a look at the video below to know what I am talking about.

Drung Waterfall

Drung Waterfall, also known as Drang Waterfall or Durung Waterfall, is a destination that must find a place in your itinerary if you are planning a winter trip to Kashmir. It may not be that large in size but the sight that it presents in the winter season is truly majestic and is sure to charm you off your feet.

As the temperature in the valley drops, the water of this fall starts to freeze. By early January, the entire face of the mountain that it falls from is covered by a thick layer of ice. The water still continues to flow down but is surrounded by huge icicles and snow.

The waterfall is located about 42 kilometers from Srinagar and 16 kilometers from Gulmarg. It remains accessible for all 12 months and can easily be included in your trip to Gulmarg. You can visit Drung at any time of the year but it is in the winter season when the waterfall is truly at its best.

For more details on this one of its kind waterfall, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Drung Waterfall and What to See . You can also take a look at the video below for more details.

Gurez Valley

Gurez Valley is one of the least explored regions of Kashmir and the one that can truly be called an offbeat destination. It is a place of high scenic beauty that does not really get the attention that it truly deserves. The vistas and the natural beauty of the mountains that you see here are very different than what you will see elsewhere.

Usually, when you talk about visiting Kashmir, it is mostly 4 places that come to mind – Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Even Srinagar just acts as a base to explore the other three places.

But Kashmir is so much more. There are so many other places here that will leave you mesmerized if visited. Gurez is one such destination that I will highly recommend that you find a place for in your travel plans.

How you can plan your trip to Gurez are details that I have covered in the posts below.

  • Gurez Valley – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary
  • Places to Visit in Gurez Valley and Things to Do
  • Best time to Visit Gurez Valley – Month, Season, Snow, Road

how to plan a trip to kashmir

Let us now take a look at some offbeat destinations that do not find a place in everyone’s itinerary but are definitely worth visiting.

Yusmarg is located at a distance of about 50 kilometers from Srinagar in the Badgam district of Kashmir. At an altitude of 2,396 meters (7,861 ft), it is an alpine valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains and meadows of Pine and Fir.

It is one of those places in Kashmir that are immensely beautiful but do not get the attention that they rightfully deserve. But for someone wanting to go offbeat and stay away from the crowd, Yousmarg is perfect.

For more details on this destination, please take a look at Yusmarg – A Comprehensive Travel Guide & Itinerary .

Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri is a small hill station in Kashmir. It lies in a bowl-shaped alpine valley surrounded by snow-clad mountains and meadows of Pine Fir and Deodar. It sits at an altitude of 2,730 meters (8,957 ft) above sea level and receives heavy snowfall in the winter season.

The region does not have all-year road connectivity yet and in the months of peak winter, it can get very difficult to reach here. For the rest of the year though, a trip to Doodhpathri can actually be made in less than half a day.

To be honest, it is not yet a hill station as there is little to no development in the region. What you see is nature in its raw form. There are just a few houses of the local shepherds and that is the only sign of civilization that you will see here.

The area is largely unexplored and receives very little tourism. However, efforts are being made by the authorities to develop it as a tourist destination. JKTDC has also built a resort here for tourists who want to stay overnight. You can take a look at Doodhpathri – A COMPLETE Travel Guide & Itinerary to find out more.

Mughal Road

Not many people would know about the Mughal Road. Srinagar Jammu National Highway, also known as NH44, is often considered to be the only road connecting the cities of Jammu and Srinagar.

It is true that it is indeed a better maintained, wider, more traveled upon, and shorter way to travel between the two places but it is definitely not the only one.

There actually exists another route that is far more scenic, less crowded, takes you through some internal parts of Kashmir, and has existed for far longer than the regular NH44 highway. Yes, I am talking about the historical Mughal road.

This route is the alternate way to travel between Jammu and Srinagar and to reach some internal areas of Kashmir like the town of Rajouri. It is also a very scenic route that definitely deserves to be explored.

For more details on Mughal Road, you can take a look at the posts below.

Aharbal Waterfall

Aharbal Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kashmir. It is also the most easily accessible one and yet never crowded. Located at a distance of only about 70 kilometers from Srinagar, it is a place that is amazingly beautiful but does not get the attention that it truly deserves.

If you are planning to visit Kashmir, I highly recommend that you find a day in your itinerary for a visit to Aharbal. How can you plan that is what I have talked about in the article below.

  • Aharbal Waterfall – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary

Can you visit Aharbal Waterfall in the winter season? It will depend a lot on the weather at the time of your trip but yes, a trip can be planned. Take a look at this short video below to see how this beautiful waterfall looks in winter.

Daksum Valley

Daksum, also known as Daksum Valley or Daksum Village, is a viewpoint or a picnic spot located on the Anantnag-Kishtwar road near Sinthan Top. Surrounded by lush green mountains and sitting right next to the Bringhi River, it is a popular spot among the locals for family outings and school picnics.

If you are someone who likes spending time in nature, away from the crowd in an offbeat place, Daksum may just be your cup of tea. It really feels like in the middle of nowhere and if you were here during the weekdays, there would hardly be anyone around. For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip to Daksum Valley .

Sinthan Top

Sinthan Top, also known as Sinthan Pass, is a mountain pass located in Kashmir’s Breng Valley, on the road that runs between Anantnag in Kashmir and Kishtwar in Jammu. At an altitude of 12,500 ft, the top of the pass is also known as the 360-degree viewpoint as it offers a charming panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and the valley.

It is a beautiful mountain pass that should find a place in every tourist’s itinerary who is coming toward Pahalgam. Due to its close proximity, Sinthan Top can be easily incorporated with a trip to Pahalgam. The drive from Srinagar to Sinthan Top through the Daksum Valley is also quite scenic and offers a chance to visit some other destinations like Achabal Gardens, Kokernag, and Daksum.

For more details, please read How to Plan a Trip to Sinthan Top and take a look at the video below. This video covers both Daksum Valley as well as Sinthan Top because both these places are right next to each other.

Chatpal Valley

Chatpal, also called Chattabal, is not really a name that many tourists know about. It is a small valley located near Pahalgam but while Pahalgam receives thousands of visitors each year, almost no one goes in the direction of Chatpal. It is one of those places in Kashmir that are still unexplored and yet to find their place on the tourist map.

The majority of the folks you will find in Chatpal will just be the locals from Anantnag or any of the nearby villages, out there for a picnic or a family outing. Even they visit Chattabal usually over the weekends, on Sundays. For the rest of the week, you will hardly see anyone there.

If you are someone who likes to go to offbeat places, away from the crowd, and spend some time in peace, then Chattabal will surely look charming to you. For more details, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Chatpal Valley and check out the video below.

Public Transport in Kashmir

The best way to travel to Kashmir is either by your self-owned vehicle or a private taxi. But if you are a budget traveler, you can also opt for public transport which is available in the form of buses and shared taxis. The problem however is that it is not frequent.

It will be hard to find a JKSRTC bus anywhere in Kashmir. You will have to rely on mini-buses and shared cabs operated by the locals. They do not have a set schedule or timetable but are available throughout the day.

For more details on this topic, please take a look at How to Travel in Kashmir by Buses & Shared Cabs . In this post, I have provided complete details on how you can commute from Srinagar to other places by public transport.

VARGIS KHAN

If you are planning on renting a taxi for your trip, the posts below can help you get a cost estimate. An important thing that you should remember is that places like Pahalgam and Gulmarg have their own taxi rates.

What it means is that if you rented a taxi to Pahalgam from Srinagar, it could only drop you in Pahalgam. To visit local places like Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, and Aru Valley, you will have to rent a local cab in Pahalgam.

The same rule applies to Gulmarg. If you want to go for a drive to Bota Pathri, you will have to rent another cab in Gulmarg for that.

Similarly, this rule is also applicable if you intend to move on to Kargil, Zanskar Valley, or Ladakh after exploring Kashmir. Take a look at the posts below to find out taxi rates applicable for these particular regions.

  • Srinagar Taxi Rates
  • Pahalgam Taxi Rates
  • Sonamarg Taxi Rates
  • Gulmarg Taxi Rates
  • Kargil Taxi Rates
  • Ladakh Taxi Rates

Renting a Bike

Renting a bike in Srinagar is a great way to explore for people who reach Kashmir by flight. There are a few bike rentals in the city which you can get the bikes from.

Please take a look at How to Rent a Bike in Srinagar and Srinagar Bike Rental Rates . From both of these posts, you can get to know the procedure and the cost involved.

Self-Drive Rental

If you would however like to rent a car in Srinagar and drive it around on your own, that is also an option. Please take a look at How to Rent a Self-Drive Car in Srinagar for more details.

Itinerary Planning

Your final itinerary for Kashmir will entirely depend on the number of days you have in hand, your budget, and your preferences. But I will recommend taking a look at How to Plan Your Itinerary for Kashmir .

In this post, I have shared different examples of itineraries based on the time at hand. You can pick any one of the suggested itineraries and either follow it completely or modify it as per your requirements.

Food to Try in Kashmir

Your trip to not just Kashmir but any place is incomplete unless you have tasted the local cuisine. That in my opinion is actually one of the best parts of traveling to different places.

The mouth-watering local food to try in Kashmir is an experience that you just cannot miss. Below is a comprehensive list of what to eat and where.

A common question that gets asked most often is about vegetarian food and its availability. You do not have to worry about that as well.

There are a lot of places all over Kashmir where they only serve vegetarian, even Jain food as well. So finding a place to eat will not actually be a problem.

The posts below provide more information on the food that you should try in Kashmir and where.

Hello Vargis bhai, Thanks a lot for detailed information, Extremely helpful to people like us to build DIY travel plan.

I am considering trip to Kashmir from Oct 14 to 24, Mainly Srinagar, Gurez, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, , is this good time to visit Kashmir and all these places i want to cover.

I am planning below itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Srinagar Day 2: Srinagar Local Day 3: Sringar Gurez Day 4: Gurez Day 5: Gurez to Gulmarg Day 6: Gulmarg to Pahalgam Day 7: Pahalgam Day 8: Pahalgam Day 9: Pahalgam to Sringar and flyout

Please let me know your thoughts if i should make any adjustment to above plan.

This is a good plan Sachin Bhai. I am assuming that you are going to book a taxi for the trip?

Yep, thanks for your feedback , Yep I plan to book taxi for entire trip, few questions.

1) Is Toyoto Etiros/Dzire is good for Gurez trip of you need to have Innova /Scorpio ? Do you know if Razdan pass would be open during October or there is chance of closure ?

2) I changed my plan a bit to skip Gulmarg as I am not interested in doing Gondola, so is there anything else interesting to do there, I assume As i am covering Doodthpatri from Srinagar, the scenary would be similar., what is your suggestion ?

3) what is your opinion on doing Day trip to Yusmarg vs Doodhpatri, from Srinagar ?, doing both on one day could be hectic right ? which one I should do Yusmarg or Doodhpatri ?

Here is my final plan with and without gulmarg as below, let me know your suggestion.

Itinerary 1: without Gulmarg Day 1: Arrive Sringar and go to Pahalgam Dah 2: Pahalgam Local Day 3: Pahalgam Local Day 4: Pahalgam to Gurez Day 5: Gurez Local Day 6: Gurez to Srinagar Day 7: Sringar local Day 8: Srinagar Doodhpatri Day 9: Srinagar Flyout in evening

Itinerary 2: with Gulmarg Day 1: Arrive Sringar and go to Pahalgam Dah 2: Pahalgam Local Day 3: Pahalgam to Gulmarg Day 4: Gulmarg to Gurez Day 5: Gurez Local Day 6: Gurez to Srinagar Day 7: Srinagar Local Day 8: Srinagar DoodthPatri Day 9: Srinagar local and Flyout.

1. Razdan Pass usually remains open in Oct. Scorpio / Innova will be better but it depends on the number of people traveling 2. Yeah, the scenery is more or less similar 3. Same on one day will be hectic. Doodhpathri is better

If the taxi driver is agreeing, the second plan would be better

Thanks a lot for your Feedback Vargisbhai ! Yes we are 3 people so I assume Dzire or Etios should be good enough to cover Dawar – Chakwali route, right ?

For Chakwali route, you will have to hire a Sumo from Dawar. The drivers from Srinagar usually refuse to go on that route due to extremely bad roads. A hatchback or a Sedan driver will definitely not go

' src=

Special thanks Verghis Bhai for so detailed information on helping out Persons planning Kashmir trip. ' src=

Hi Sangita – Gulmarg is better among all three of them but also crowded. If not Gulmarg then Doodhpathri

Dear All, This is the review about Kashmironline. We booked on a package in this summer for a family through them, but the hotel which they have opted in Srinagar was not good. No power to stay, no water and no hot water as well. We have to ask for all service every now and then. But upfront the agency collects the payment. Also, they never respond. The reason for booking through a travel agent is that we will not have issues and it will be a safe travel, but here its very bad, there will be a response saying that they will do, but nothing will happen. Remember people travelling to Srinagar / Kashmir make sure you are clear on package, would recommend to make arrangements on your own. Do not depend on any travel agents. Specially Kashmironline at all. They are not friendly and held me in a hotel to pay the final amount. Never trust on any customer and they do not need any customer satisfaction. I have informed very clearly the balance 7-8% (Approx 9000) of amount will be paid on last day of my travel in morning, irrespective of telling and informing the same, they holded in the hotel in the lobby asking for balance payment two days prior itself. The agency called up the hotel informed that before I leave collect the balance money. That looks very bad in front of others asking for money as if am going to move away without paying from them. My only question is if you guys or agency never trust on customer, how do you expect the customer to trust you. If something goes wrong, you will never revert back right. Now, I had a bad and worst stay in Srinagar, they never responded to me anything about that at all. The kashmironline person was apologizing but nothing happened. The issues repeated thrice for all 3 days of stay, our stay was ruined. We went for sight-seeing late for all 3 days and we are not provided with basic necessity of things to stay. Irrespective of informing that Iam not comfortable on the first day itself. Please be aware of these things in Kashmir. Never book though kashmironline at all. They never bother about any feedback or comfortable stay of customer. Only money is important. The driver they organized doesn’t even have a courtesy and he dropped us the railway station by 9pm and have requested him to take me to 5km nearby for dinner which he denied. He never answered any calls after dropping us. Irrespective of informing that we need to have dinner before dropping us, he never bothered that Iam with 2 kids without food travelling for whole night. He was keen on moving away since the money is fully paid a day prior. Important is he knows entire story of this issue. They never change and felt bad for booking with them. Entire trip is ruined and I have give other hint to save other atleast, not to get cheated. Since no one save me.. kashmironline These details are from my recent personal experience during the month of May 2023.

With Regards, Balasubramaniam.

Thank you Bala Bhai for sharing your experience. Most of these online travel platforms are more or less the same. They act as mediators only. I always tell people to not go with any online travel platform.

Hello Vargis Thank you so much for your details, Want to choose one destination among Doodhpathri, Yousmarg and Gulmarg, please advise.

' src=

Hi Vargis, Thank you for your sharing and your article very details. If you don’t mind please suggest best travel agent in Kashmir who can arrange. We plan our trip on December 2023.. tq

' src=

Hello. Thanks for the details. I am planning Gulmarg directly from the airport (2 nights) , then Sonmarg (2 nights), then Pahalgam (3 nights) and then Srinagar (2 nights). Is that itinerary okay ? Are these places equidistant

2 and 3 days is a bit much. Gulmarg 1 day, Sonamarg 1 day and Pahalgam 1 night should be more than enough. You can spend rest of your time visiting other places.

' src=

Vargis Ji, we are not getting tickets for Gondola Ride. what would be other options?

No other option bhai. You can check at the counter if anyone is selling in black

' src=

Hi I am visiting from may 1 to 6 ., this is my first trip to kashmir solo, will travelling to Kargil from Srinagar for 2 days be good ..?

That road is not open yet. There is no telling if it will open by May 1

' src=

What a great Blog. Covers almost everything. The best part is that it is not commercial blogs, which generally have an interest in the places they mention. You have written in simple language and from your first-hand experience. I am a Sr. Citizen and also handicapped. I use an artificial limb, but mobility is not an issue (maybe rocky climbing and snow/water). I do travel a lot. My question is: Will you recommend Gondola Phase I and II? My Travel Agent has custom-built an Itinerary for my wife and me using taxis only for the 2 of us. I was told that there is a Union issue and private taxis are not allowed in Gulmarg and Pahalgam and I will have to book local taxis there.

Please advise keeping my handicap in mind. Thanks.

I intend to travel in mid-September.

Thank you for your kind words, Mr. D’Souza.

If you are going to stay in Gulmarg overnight, then yes, I will recommend the Gondola ride. If you are just planning a day trip, it will be best to skip it.

You do not need to rent another taxi in Gulmarg for sightseeing. They may ask to take you to Bota Pathri by renting another cab but avoid that. There is nothing there. All the other places in Gulmarg are near the market area. No additional taxi is needed.

Yes, you will have to rent another taxi in Pahalgam for local sightseeing. Srinagar taxi will not be allowed there.

' src=

Hello Vargis, your blogs are awesome, provides complete details one need to plan themselves. Great work! I’m confused in choosing one between yusmarg and doodhpathiri. If i have to select one of these, which one should it be? TIA

Hello Priya Ji – Thank you for your kind words. Both of the places are equally beautiful but if I have to pick one, I will go to Doodhpathri.

Such a detailed article!!! Thanks for sharing

There are so many very well known and most liked temples in Kashmir I didn’t find any mention of these temples and places in your article is there any particular reason or you missed it In case you need any help to draw your attention towards those places I can do that

Pran Bhai Most of these temples are located in the old Srinagar town and I never had the chance to visit there until recently. I do not put any information on the blog until I have been to that place. Please see this post. I did visit the temples and highlighted them

https://vargiskhan.com/log/srinagar-old-city-tour/

If you have information on these temples, please do let me know and I will update. The two that I have been to is the Mangaleshwar Mahadev temple and the Ganesh Ji temple in Ganpatyar. I know there are a lot many others and I plan on visiting them during my next trip so that I can write a post about the temples in Srinagar.

Hi Vargis, your blogs are just out of this world. You can start publishing “Vargis Planet”

I have a mobility issue. Though I drive but I walk with crutches and small distances only. I followed your blog on Prashar Lake and you had clarified all my concerns so well that I drove upto the last possible point without any issue and then a little walk to the point from where the lake is visible. Though I didn’t trek down to the lake and temple. That was little too much for me.

Anyway, I am now planning to drive to Kashmir in Sept 1st week and plan to spend 3 days each at Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg. I wanted to ask you how long is the walks at various gardens in Srinagar. I also plan to do Doodhpatri, Yousmarg and Achabal.

Is there too much to walk in Phase 1 and 2 of Gandola, also Sonmarg, Kokernag, Daksum areas? I will be thankful if you can reply to me and help me plan better.

Hi Swati – Sorry I had been traveling myself for the last couple of months and did not see your comment until now. Sorry for the late reply. I guess you are already in Kashmir by now.

Kashmir Travel Guide

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog. The Week 2 of #BlogchatterA2Z begins today with letter G. And, I thought of bringing to you an ultimate travel guide to help you plan a trip to Kashmir . Jammu & Kashmir is a state in northern India surrounded by the great Himalayan ranges. J&K consists of 3 regions – Jammu, Kashmir Valley, and Ladakh. Today, I will be talking about the Kashmir valley which is famous for its beautiful landscape, snow-capped mountains & pristine lakes & rivers. Not to forget the warm and lovely people of Kashmir.

I know currently the situation in Kashmir is bit tensed & not favorable for tourism. Also, families may not consider it as a preferred travel destination. But, I am sure that everything is going to get normal very soon. And, travelers & tourists will start flocking this beautiful valley once again.

I fell in love with Kashmir at a very young age. I have heard many stories of its heavenly beauty from my parents & have seen it in their b&w honeymoon pictures.

My Parents in Kashmir (1983)

It was my childhood dream to travel to this beautiful destination. And my dream came true last year when we planned a family trip to Kashmir in the month of October . My mother and mother-in-law had also joined us since it was a special birthday trip for my husband.

We were confused about whether to go or to cancel this trip until the last minute. But once we stepped out of the airport and the fresh air touched us, we knew our stay in Kashmir was going to be very memorable. And, we would be taking back so many memories with us.

Here’s a famous quote by Mughal Emperor Jehangir when he visited Kashmir “Gar Firdaus bar-rue zaminast, hamiasto, hamin asto, haminast.”  Meaning ‘If there is heaven on earth , it is here, it is here, it is here’. And, it still holds true.

Let me help answer some of the common questions which we had while planning our trip.

When to visit?

The first thing we wanted to check was the best time to visit Kashmir. We were looking for the month of October which is considered the onset of winter season & also the offseason in Kashmir. My husband called a few tour operators in Kashmir and checked with them about the weather conditions. He even checked with the hotels to be sure about the weather since we were traveling with a toddler and senior citizens.

Kashmir is one destination in India which you can visit at any time of the year. It depends on what you want to enjoy there. And what temperatures you can tolerate.

  • Summer – April to June (Max tourist footfall)
  • Monsoon – July to September
  • Winters – October to March (Max Snowfall in Dec-Jan-Feb)

Summer months get the maximum crowd in the valley. However, people who love snow, flock in the winter months. We visited in October and found it to be the perfect time to enjoy the true beauty of Kashmir, it was neither too cold not too hot.

How to Reach?

Since we had only 5 days in hand, we chose the fastest way to reach Srinagar. The airport is very well connected to all the major cities in India. The flight takes only 1 hour 30 min from Delhi to Srinagar. And the fare ranges from INR 3000 to INR 5000 depending on the airline. You can reach Kashmir by any of these means, by-

Air- Srinagar International Airport

Road- Delhi to Srinagar (809 Km via NH 44)

Train- Jammu Tawi Railway Station in Jammu

Most important question – Is it Safe to Visit Kashmir?

We all know the situation in Kashmir. We keep hearing about the news of violence, stone pelting, and ceasefire violation in J&K. Srinagar is the main city that witnesses the violent protests by the frustrated youth. But let me tell you, Kashmir is the warmest place on Earth & the care and hospitality by the Kashmiris is truly heart touching.

For Kashmiris, tourism is the main source of their income. And, they can never go against tourists or hurt them. In fact, they go out of their way to save tourists from any foul situation. During our stay, we felt that warmth, love, and care in their hospitality.

An Easy 6 Days Trip To Kashmir With Family

The beauty of Kashmir starts getting into you way before you touch the ground. The vast glacier’s aerial view from the plane starts building that excitement of playing in those mountains once you reach. It sounds like a child, but I doubt if any adult doesn’t feel the same way. I am discussing our An Easy 6 Day Itinerary To Kashmir With Family that started on the day of Eid festival. When we arrived at the Srinagar airport. It felt festive as the airport crew dressed in Eid dresses. We were overwhelmed by the military we saw around when we came out of the airport. You will get used to it as the day passes in Kashmir. One more thing that overwhelmed us was the beautiful bushes of roses outside the airport, and on the way, many houses and buildings had them hanging out of the boundary walls.

kashmir trip with parents

Now let’s discuss your itinerary for the Kashmir vacation.

The 6 Day Itinerary To Kashmir goes like this :

Day 1 – arrive in srinagar and explore the dal lake and kashmiri wazwan.

Day 2 – Take a trip to Pahalgam and enjoy the area’s natural beauty.

Day 3 – Take a drive from Pahalgam to offbeat places.

Day 4 – Drive to Sonamarg or Srinagar and take a hiking expedition or Dal Lake Shikara ride.

Day 5 – head to gulmarg for a gondola ride, skiing or snowboarding, day 6 – take the srinagar city tour, dal lake shikara ride and visit the mughal gardens..

Day 7 – Fly back home from Srinagar.

Our first day of 6 day itinerary to Kashmir, started in Srinagar with a Kashmiri family, was truly unforgettable. Right from the welcome at their house to their hospitality till the end was so pleasing to the heart. We were wowed at the house’s entrance with the beautiful flower plantation in their front yard and all around the house walls. The whole family met with us as if we had known each other for ages. They gave us a small tour of their Kashmiri-style house. Extending their hospitality, they washed our hands on one of their hand wash utensils and were served Kashmiri food on Kashmiri utensils sitting in Kashmiri wazwan style.

The day went by with all the talks about life in Kashmir and some hilarious incidents they faced being in Kashmir. They showed the houses around and said they all lived close to each other. The neighbours you see are all family, and also they like to marry the girls from close by houses. So the girl also stays close to the family. As our meeting ended, they served us some Kashmiri tea. This tea was unique as it was white because of milk but was also not sweet but salty. Honestly, I had it not being spoilsport, but salty tea is not for me. Hahaha

To experience Kashmiri dastarkhwan, check out any Airbnb that provides that kind of experience or go to  Salam-e-wazwan  or Bhat restaurant/ Kashmiri wazwan, Ahdoos, or  Kareema Restaurant .

We checked into our Airbnb located behind Dal Lake. A small hotel that only served vegetarian food in the room. Since it was last minute booking, we couldn’t find a nice hotel or a view. But staying the night was cheap, and the vegetarian parathas were delicious too. The room had no toiletries or water, so we had to buy some from the nearby shop.

Those who don’t have such meeting plans with the Kashmiri family can check in to their hotel, go for the Dal lake shikara ride first, and start their itinerary by driving to Pahalgam the next day.

Day 2 – Take a trip to Pahalgam and enjoy the area’s natural beauty .

The following day we drove to Pahalgam for 3 to 4 hours approx. Are you in the mood to escape the city life’s hustle and bustle? Look no further than Pahalgam, a hill station nestled in the lush Kashmir Valley. Known for its pristine meadows, dense pine forests, and sparkling streams, Pahalgam is a nature lover’s paradise.

If you get a chance, visit the bazaar on the way to Pahalgam. That is Anantnag Market. I wanted to stop at some local bread shops, where I saw colossal round naan  and Kashmiri copper wear  shops selling brass utensils with an authentic vibe. All these shops showed a tiny part of their culture.

You can stop at some of the restaurants on the way to Pahalgam. These restaurants (Evergreen Resort) are very crowded in the morning. Looks like every tourist is travelling to Pahalgam. Next to the restaurant, we found a small garden with the Lidder river streaming behind, picnic tables around and the boundary was fascinatingly filled with peach, and red rose plants.

Check out some beautiful scenes you will get on the way to Pahalgam.

We travelled along the Lidder river to our hotel Raj Palace in Pahalgam. The hotel is right on the main road of Pahalgam market.

The weather in Pahalgam is unpredictable. At times it’s warm and sunny and next you will find it’s raining.

The day we reached, it was raining, so we lost our afternoon. We walked around our hotel and checked out the nearby Pahalgam markets. We had no idea Pahalgam had so many parks around.

Parks in Pahalgam  – We went to one of the parks,  Island Park , next to the enormous parking area you will find when you enter Pahalgam. The park has some mesmerizing views of snow hills, and a large grassland garden allows you to have a lovely picnic where parents can relax by letting the kids run free. One more thing you can do over here is clicking as many better-posed pictures as you want. Also, you can get some close shots of the Lidder river.

Pahalgam Market  – Since the hotels are located near Pahalgam market, you may take a walk around. Check out some souvenir shops, and we mostly checked out the restaurants there.

Day 3:  Take a drive from Pahalgam to offbeat places.

Aru Valley  – Located about 12 km from Pahalgam, we drove for almost 3 hours and reached the location. Since it’s one of the famous locations near Pahalgam, you often find it crowded. The place is on the hills but not at a high altitude. Families with kids and old parents can have a lovely picnic here and reach this place easily by car. The beauty of Aru valley lies in the surrounding mountains with tall pine trees. You may also do horse riding over here.

kashmir trip with parents

Betab valley  – Betab Valley is also known as Hagan Valley or Hajan Valley. It got its name Betab valley, after the movie Betaab shot over here. You can reach here in 15-20 mins by car, or if you are up for a walk and a little hike, you can get here in 1 hour from Pahalgam. Or you can go to Aru Valley first via taxi, and then Betab valley. You will have to take tickets to go inside and enjoy the garden. This location looks out of the movies, surrounded by colossal pine tree hills and streaming rivers.

Betab valley top view

Chandanwari  – Chandanwari is the starting point to go for the Amarnath yatra. And it’s such a high altitude that you might face severe breathlessness as you walk up to the plain glacier sight. A few people were fainting due to a lack of oxygen. It’s not dreadful, but I suggest a slow movement as you progress. As you reach the Chandanwari entrance, you will find multiple small cafes and shops offering tea/coffee and fried items like bread pakora, onion, potato pakora, and maggie. You will not have more than this in any of these shops. There is no proper restaurant that serves you lunch, and most of the tourists arrive here during lunchtime. It was a huge letdown.

Chandanwari in kashmir

Another thing is you will have to walk at least a kilometre to reach the main attraction and then you will have to climb the staircase. Where you are actually tired and start feeling breathless. You can hire a sleigh at the spot or go with the vendors who will take you up the hill and slide down, making you experience the snow slide sledge. We booked them for 500 INR per person (we bargained). You can also rent a boot which is a wise decision.

Baisaran  – Located 5 km from Pahalgam, Baisaran is often called Switzerland due to its picturesque landscape surrounded by snowy mountains. The hilltop is densely filled with Pine trees, giving you a fantastic walking experience between the pine trees and on the hill. Tourists visiting Pahalgam also go for Baisaran, which looks similar to Aru Valley but has a more beautiful landscape. You may find a few vendors asking you to take them to mini Switzerland via horseback riding at a high price, you don’t have to go with them if you can hike a bit, but you better bargain and reach this impressive site. The top things you can do over here are Horse riding, pony riding, zip lining and zorbing.

River Rafting  – Pahalgam river rafting is another adventure in Pahalgam. This distance from the start to the finish point is set in three rides. You can choose among 2.5 km rides, 5 km medium long ride and 8 km extra long ride. And all these rides are set with difficulty levels you want to choose to get the thrilling rafting experience.

The best time to do river rafting in Pahalgam  is in May and June when the weather in Kashmir is a little warm, and the water is also not freezing. But book it in advance, so you are not lost among the crowded tourists gushing to do the rafting.

Lidder River  – Lidder river is a beauty spot in the serene sights of Pahalgam. It serves some impeccable views for your eyes. Getting close to the river is one small happiness you will have. We got down from our car as often as possible to click pictures around the Lidder river.

Around this area, you will also see a lot of Kashmiris camping. Many companies also offer camping in Kashmir if you like to have that experience.

Tip: 1. You will find multiple vendors selling your shawl saying it’s a pashmina, not 100% but 80 %. Please do not believe you can also buy those shawls just like a woollen shawl and bargain.

On day 4, you can go back to Srinagar or drive through to Sonamarg. The drive alone is breathtaking. The scenery constantly changes as you pass rolling hills, towering mountain ranges, and trekking through winding valleys. And then arrive at your destination – Sonamarg, known as “The Meadow of Gold.”

brown horses on green grass field

Best things to do in Sonamarg : Thajiwas Glacier, Gangabal Lake, Jozila pass, Vishansar lake, Krishansar lake, Baltal Valley.

Thajiwas Glacier and the frozen stream nearby, where you could see snow even during summer. Set off on a trail that will take you past waterfalls and meadows dotted with wildflowers. It isn’t easy at times, but every step is worth it when you reach the top and can take in the fantastic views around you. It’s suggested to hire a horse to reach Thajiwas Glacier. It’s around 7-800 INR per person. But bargaining is your art.

The best time to visit Sonamarg  is from April to October. When the weather is open and a little warm. From November to February, Sonamarg is closed due to excessive snowfall.

Take a leisurely stroll through the meadows dotted with wildflowers during the summer season, hike through winding paths to reach stunning viewpoints, or take a bumpy ride through the mountains. All are worth it.

Gulmarg

A Kashmir vacation in India wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Gulmarg for some Gondola rides, walking between the summer blooms, or skiing or snowboarding in winter on the gorgeous mountains. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or starting out, Gulmarg has slopes for all experience levels. The instructors at the resort are friendly and willing to teach beginners the ropes, but more advanced skiers and boarders can have a blast hitting the advanced runs and even attempting some off-piste areas with a guide. And when it’s time for a break from shredding powder, take a gondola ride to check out the breathtaking views at Apharwat Peak. Trust me – you won’t regret checking off skiing or snowboarding from your bucket list at Gulmarg. Or just a little tour of Gulmarg’s parks and uneven roads if you visit in summer. And head back to Srinagar.

Check out some tips for a Gondola ride in a Gulmarg video.

We decided to visit the fantastic Nishat Bagh gardens in Shalimar. As soon as we arrived, we were mesmerized by the symmetrical layout and vibrant colours of the flowers and trees. The 12 terraces surrounded us with beauty, representing the 12 zodiac signs according to Mughal tradition. And amidst it all was a stunning view of Dal Lake, providing an idyllic backdrop for this green oasis. We spent hours strolling through the garden, taking occasional breaks to enjoy the delicious Kashmiri tea and snacks sold by local vendors. It was a tough decision to leave such a serene paradise.

An Easy 6 Days Trip To Kashmir With Family

We went for a lovely shikara ride on the majestic Dal Lake. As the shikara glided across the water, the scenic view of the colourful houseboats was unlike anything. As we chugged along, vendors approached our boat, offering everything from trinkets to freshly made Kashmiri tea. It was heartwarming to see floating herb gardens and floating markets. The shikara driver explained the lives of locals at Dal lake. I couldn’t believe that the population was around 3 lakhs at Dal lake. The day ended with a delicious dinner of traditional Kashmiri cuisine in one of the restaurants near Dal lake, followed by some Kashmiri pashmina cashmere shopping.

Day 7 – Fly back home from Srinagar .

From taking a leisurely shikara ride on Dal Lake to the marvellous valleys of Pahalgam and the unbeatable beauty of the snow hills of Gulmarg, the past week has been filled with unforgettable memories. The warmth and hospitality of the locals or savouring delicious meals at local restaurants was a great experience.

Overall, Kashmir was a fantastic experience, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a unique travel destination in India. The people are friendly, the scenery is breathtaking, and there’s so much to see and do. If you’re planning a trip to Kashmir soon, add these things to your itinerary!

Table of Contents

Day 1: Houseboat, Temple visit & Nature walk

houseboat-on-the-dal-lake-srinagar

Morning: Take an early morning flight from New Delhi to the summer capital of Kashmir, Srinagar. To experience the local essence, a 2-day stay in a houseboat is a must. The only way to reach your houseboat is a Shikara ride that costs around 200 INR. The houseboats on the Dal Lake look like mini floating villas are one of the best things to experience in Kashmir.

Afternoon: After luggage quick rest, take a Shikara ride back to the land and head to the famous Shankaracharya Temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located at a height of 1000 ft. To reach the temple, you need to climb 284 steps. From the top of the temple, you get a 360-degree view of Srinagar city and is worth it!

Evening: Time for some royal experience? Head to the Nishat Bagh, located on the eastern side of the Dal Lake. This heaven-like garden is second largest in the city and has a terrace style design with twelve terraces surrounded by beautiful flowers. You also get a glimpse of the snow-capped Himalayan Mountains. After treating your eyes with breath-taking scenery head back to your Houseboat for delectable Kashmiri Wazwan.

Day2: Brunch, Pahalgam & Floating Market

pahalgam-kashmir

Morning: After all that binge eating last night, you must be thinking of skipping your breakfast, Don’t you? But there’s nothing to worry, you can find many local bakeries on your way to Pahalgam that serve amazing Bakarkhani. Passing through the saffron and mustard field, you reach Pahalgam which is 2 ½ hours away from Srinagar. After brunching at Nathu’s Rasoi, a famous Indian food chain, you start your pony back ride from Aru to Baisaran.

Afternoon: As you climb up the Lidder and Sheshnag River and the view of the valley and peaks gets more picturesque. A 12km pony back ride takes you to your final stop, Baisaran plains which are called the Switzerland of Kashmir. Spend some time here strolling around, taking pictures of the snow-capped mountains and sipping cinnamon tea.

Evening: Spend some time exploring the floating market on the Dal Lake. You’ll find elusive boatmen selling homegrown vegetables and household stuff like biscuits, ready-to-eat snacks. Along with houseboats selling handicraft, Kashmiri shawl and dresses. Rest the day with some soothing Kashmiri local music and delicious food.

Day 3: Gulmarg, Gondola Ride & Sports

gulmarg-kashmir

Morning: After a relaxing evening, we have an adventurous day planned for you. Starting the day with Gulmarg, which is 2 hours away from Srinagar. Its a pristine town in Kashmir known for its snow-capped mountains. If you are visiting during summers, you can explore the Gold course, which remains covered under snow during winters. Visit the shrine of Lord Shiva located on top of a small hillock. After paying a visit to the shrine, head to the Gondola booking office to buy tickets for your gondola ride that will take you to level 1 & 2.

Afternoon: Take the gondola to reach level-1, which remains covered in snow throughout the year. Try your hands at winter sports such as snow bike, skiing or you can just make snow angels. Head to level-2 in a gondola to get a stunning view of the valley.

Evening: On the way back to Srinagar, visit the Cricket bat factory. Fuel up with some Kashmiri Kahwa and indulge yourself in a shopping spree at the Lal Bazaar.

Day 4: Gardens, Shrines & Final Farewell

shalimar-garden-kashmir

Morning: After an adventurous time, start the day in the lap of nature. Visit the Badamwari (almond garden) which is a must for the first-timers. The garden is located on the foothills of Koh-e-Maran and displays a wide variety of flowers like tulips, lavenders, daffodils and many more.

Afternoon: Once you’re done exploring the garden, head to famous Muslim shrine Hazratbal. After you checkin, rest till evening. In the evening, proceed towards Dal Lake for an amazing sunset boat ride. The ride typically lasts for 1 - 1.5 hours and shall cost you about INR 500 - 800 per person. Make sure that you bargain. During the ride, you will come across people in boats selling snacks, kahwa (traditional Kashmiri tea), artifacts, etc. You will also pass by the floating market. The prices here can be a tad bit more expensive compared to land costs.

Post the boat ride, you can have dinner and call it a day.

On day 2, finish your breakfast early and proceed towards Pahalgam. You can hire a cab for this. The journey from Srinagar to Pahalgam should take about 2 - 3 hours. En route, you will pass by saffron fields, apple orchards and cricket bat factory. You may also purchase dry fruits and saffron from any of the shops on the way.

On arrival at Pahalgam, check into your hotel. The following are our recommendations:

kashmir trip with parents

Post lunch, proceed towards Pahalgam taxi stand. You can hire a pony here to visit places such as mini Switzerland, Kashmir valley, Pahalgam valley, etc. The cost of pony will depend upon the places that you want to visit and should range from INR 4000 - 5000 per person. Again, make sure to bargain. This should take about 4 - 5 hours to complete.

P.S. Even though this experience is slightly expensive, we strongly recommend it. The views are to die for, and movies such as Bajrangi Bhaijan were shot in these places.

Post this trip, return to your hotel for dinner and call it a day.

Pahalgam and return to Srinagar

Post breakfast, proceed to Pahalgam taxi stand. Please note that the cabs you hired from Srinagar are not allowed here, and you need to hire local union cabs from the taxi stand to visit Aru Valley, Betab Valley, and Chandanwari. During winter months, you may hire a sled in these valleys since walking can be a bit taxing in the cold weather. Gumboots will be available for rent in front of the entrance of these places. You can spend 1 - 1.5 hours in each of these places.

kashmir trip with parents

Once you cover these places, you can return to Srinagar. En-route, visit Avantipur ruins.

In the evening, you may visit Lal Chowk market or take a stroll along the banks of Dal Lake.

On day 4, finish your breakfast early and proceed towards Gulmarg. You can hire a cab for this. The journey from Srinagar to Gulmarg should take about 1.5 - 2 hours. Please note that during winter months, depending on road conditions, your vehicle may not be allowed in Gulmarg and you may have to hire a local union cab. Here also, on the top, you may hire a sled during the winter months. You can also rent jackets, gumboots, etc. here. The main attraction in Gulmarg is the Gondola ride. The queue for getting the tickets can sometimes be very long, so plan on reaching Gulmarg early. It is also possible to book these tickets online. Gondola has two phases. The ticket price will depend upon the phase that you want to visit.

You can also try out activities such as skiing and snowboarding here. You may spend 4 - 5 hours here, depending upon the crowd and number of activities that you want to do.

Post this, definitely visit Drung waterfall, especially if you are visiting during the winter months. The frozen waterfall is one of the best natural sights that you will see in your life!

kashmir trip with parents

Return to Srinagar in the evening.

Departure from Srinagar

Check out from your hotel post breakfast and proceed towards with lots of memories to be cherished for a lifetime!

1. The land cost in Kashmir is expensive compared to other destinations (for hiring pony, local cabs, renting winter wear, etc.). Make sure that you bargain for a fair price and also carry sufficient amount of cash with you. While ATMs are available in Srinagar, they are sparsely available in other locations and online payment is not always an option.

2. If you are traveling during winter, make sure to carry sufficient amount of winter wear such as thermals, jackets, sweaters, etc. While gumboots are available for rent in places with heavy snow, you must carry woollen socks and a good pair of shoes.

3. Make sure to carry your essential medicines with you since medical shops may not be accessible everywhere.

4. While aerial shots of Kashmir are beautiful, make sure that you ask around for local regulations related to flying a drone.

5. Please leave for airport early on your departure day since there is security checking before entering the airport. Please make sure to factor in atleast 30 - 45 minutes for this, based on the crowd at the airport.

In the night, I rented a tent from a nearby shop to camp under the sky in Betab Valley. It was an item from my bucket list that I just had to strike off. I was a little sceptical at first. Alone, in a valley, in the wild. But my driver reassured me. Setting the dates, itinerary planning: crafting your kashmir experience, must-visit places in kashmir: unveil the wonders, navigating mobile networks in kashmir: what you need to know, culinary delights: savoring kashmiri cuisine, navigating kashmir’s roads: understanding taxi rates, finding the perfect accommodation in kashmir: a guide to resting comfortably, budgeting for your kashmir trip: planning your finances, packing for kashmir: what to wear.

Choosing the right time to visit Kashmir is vital for a remarkable adventure. The region showcases its beauty in different seasons:

  • Spring (March to May): During this period, you’ll witness blooming gardens, pleasant weather, and the famous Tulip Festival in Srinagar.
  • Autumn (September to November): Enjoy the vibrant landscapes as the leaves change color, making this season perfect for photography and trekking.
  • Winter (December to February): Snow lovers rejoice! Kashmir transforms into a winter wonderland, ideal for skiing and snowboarding.
  • Monsoon (June to August): While the region remains lush during these months, it’s best to avoid this season due to heavy rainfall and potential travel disruptions.

Tip: Avoid planning your trip during the Amarnath Yatra season. During this period, millions of pilgrims flock to the Amarnath Cave, causing increased congestion and potential accommodation shortages in the region. Planning your visit outside of this time ensures a more tranquil and hassle-free experience in Kashmir.

The first step in planning your Kashmir trip is setting the dates. Consider the best time to visit based on your preferences. Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are ideal for pleasant weather and blooming gardens, while Winter (December to February) offers a snowy wonderland. Avoid the monsoon season (June to August) to ensure clear skies.

Crafting a well-rounded itinerary is pivotal to making the most of your Kashmir trip. Consider the following aspects, keeping in mind that the ideal itinerary can vary for different types of travelers, whether you’re traveling with kids, as a couple, or with a family:

Destination Prioritization:

Begin by listing your must-visit places, taking into account your interests and the time available. Prioritizing your destinations helps you allocate sufficient time for each one and ensures you don’t miss out on any highlights. If you’re traveling with kids, consider including child-friendly attractions and activities.

Travel Duration:

Calculate the number of days you’ll be spending in Kashmir. This will determine the pace of your trip and how much time you can allocate to each destination. Keep in mind that traveling with kids or as a family may require a slower pace to accommodate their needs and interests.

Local Events and Festivals:

Check for local events, festivals, and celebrations that might coincide with your visit. Participating in or witnessing these cultural events can add a unique dimension to your trip. Conversely, it’s essential to be aware of any festivals that could lead to increased crowds and accommodation challenges, especially when traveling with a family.

Seasonal Activities:

Consider the time of year you’re visiting and plan activities accordingly. For example, if you’re traveling with kids, you might want to incorporate visits to parks, nature reserves, and attractions suitable for children. If you’re a couple seeking adventure, plan activities like trekking or skiing.

Weather Conditions:

Kashmir’s weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for fluctuations. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and pack accordingly. If you’re traveling with kids, ensure you have appropriate clothing and gear to keep them comfortable and safe.

Local Cuisine Exploration:

Factor in time for culinary experiences. Don’t rush through meals; savor the local Kashmiri cuisine at various restaurants and cafes. Try traditional dishes and savor the flavors that make Kashmiri food renowned. Consider the dietary preferences and needs of your fellow travelers, especially if you have kids.

Relaxation and Leisure:

Allocate moments for relaxation and leisure. Kashmir’s serene landscapes invite you to unwind, soak in the tranquility, and reflect on your experiences. Customize your leisure activities based on the preferences and energy levels of your travel companions, whether they are family members or your significant other.

Local Culture and Interaction:

Engage with the local culture by attending cultural events, interacting with the friendly Kashmiri people, and exploring local markets. These interactions can provide deep insights into the region’s heritage and traditions, and they can be both educational and enjoyable for children.

Flexibility:

Lastly, maintain flexibility in your itinerary. Different types of travelers have unique needs and interests, so be open to adjustments based on their feedback and preferences. Being adaptable will allow you to cater to the diverse experiences and expectations of your travel companions.

By considering these aspects and tailoring your itinerary to the specific needs and preferences of your travel group, whether it’s a family with kids or a couple seeking a romantic getaway, you’ll be well-prepared to create a balanced and fulfilling Kashmir experience that caters to everyone’s interests and ensures you make the most of your time in this mesmerizing destination.

When it comes to mobile network connectivity in Kashmir, understanding the landscape of service providers is essential for a seamless communication experience. Here’s a breakdown of the network options, along with some important insights:

1. BSNL: The Widest Network in Kashmir

  • BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) offers the broadest coverage in Kashmir, making it a reliable choice for staying connected, especially in urban areas.

2. Airtel: Quality Network for Better Connectivity

  • Airtel stands out for its network quality in Kashmir. Travelers seeking a dependable connection often opt for Airtel due to its reliable performance.

3. Jio: A Decent Choice for Connectivity

  • Jio, while not as widespread as BSNL or Airtel, still offers decent connectivity in many parts of Kashmir, including popular tourist destinations.

4. Vodafone and Idea: A Mixed Bag

  • Vodafone and Idea, while present, may not offer the same level of service quality as BSNL, Airtel, or Jio. Travelers might experience variable connectivity with these providers.

Postpaid vs. Prepaid: A Crucial Distinction

  • The most critical piece of information for travelers to Kashmir is that only postpaid connections work in the valley. If your phone had a prepaid connection, it will be rendered unusable as soon as you enter Kashmir.

Where to Expect Connectivity:

  • In popular tourist destinations like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam, postpaid connections from any major service provider should provide you with good reception and data connectivity.
  • When venturing into offbeat areas, the availability of network coverage can vary significantly based on the service provider. It’s advisable to check with the local population or consult your service provider for information on connectivity in specific offbeat locations.

By understanding these nuances of mobile network connectivity in Kashmir, you can make informed choices about your communication needs during your visit. Whether you’re exploring renowned tourist spots or embarking on offbeat adventures, staying connected will enhance your overall experience in this mesmerizing region.

When you explore the picturesque landscapes of Kashmir, having a reliable mode of transportation is crucial. Taxis are a popular choice for getting around, but it’s important to understand how taxi rates work in this region.

Standard Taxi Rates

In Kashmir, taxi rates can vary depending on factors such as the season and distance. When you rent a taxi in Srinagar, for instance, it will typically cover your journey to your chosen destination, be it Pahalgam, Gulmarg, or other nearby locations.

Important Note: Places like Pahalgam and Gulmarg have their own taxi rates, which is an important aspect to remember. This means that if you hire a taxi in Srinagar to reach Pahalgam or Gulmarg, it will drop you off at your destination within these towns. However, to explore local attractions like Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, Aru Valley in Pahalgam, or Bota Pathri in Gulmarg, you will need to rent a local cab within these respective areas.

Inter-Region Travel

If you plan to venture beyond Kashmir and explore regions like Kargil, Zanskar Valley, or Ladakh after your Kashmir exploration, keep in mind that the same rule applies. You’ll need to rent another taxi or vehicle in your new destination to continue your journey.

Understanding these taxi rate variations ensures a smoother and more cost-effective travel experience in Kashmir. By being aware of the local taxi norms and planning your transportation accordingly, you can seamlessly navigate the region’s stunning landscapes and explore its diverse attractions.

A perfect 7-day itinerary for Kashmir

Panchali Dey , TIMESOFINDIA.COM , TRAVEL TRENDS , KASHMIR Updated : Aug 29, 2022, 12:01 IST

kashmir trip with parents

If you are planning a trip to Kashmir, you might be having a hard time creating an itinerary that doesn't miss the must-visits. With Kashmir, being one of India’s most sought-after destinations, it's normal to be confused about the itinerary. So, to help you save time, here’s our comprehensive 7-days itinerary that ensures that you do not miss the prominent attractions.

Day 1 - Arrival in Srinagar

The best and the easiest way to arrive at Srinagar is by air; it is largely affordable and will save your time too. After you reach Srinagar, take some time out to relax and use the rest of the day to explore nearby areas. If possible, do enjoy a shikara ride over the Dal Lake and witness a beautiful sunset.

Day 2 - Sonamarg

After breakfast, get ready to head out to Sonamarg. It will take around two and a half hours to reach Sonamarg from Srinagar by car.

Sonamarg translates to a meadow of gold, and this place rightly justifies this title. As you reach here, your vision is graced by breathtaking views, which seem nothing less than magical. Here, you can either indulge in some adventurous activities or take in the beauty around, before heading back to Srinagar.

Day 3 - Gulmarg

Whether you are in Srinagar or Sonamarg, your next ideal stop will be Gulmarg. It's one of the most famous ski destinations not only in India, but also in the world. It's also a paradise for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and photographers. When here, don't miss gondola rides and mountain biking.

Day 4 - Pahalgam

Next in your travel itinerary will be Pahalgam, another breathtakingly beautiful place that you shouldn't skip. Pahalgam, the Valley of Shepherds , is famed for its lush green forests, scenic landscape, and makes for a great spot to visit. If possible, enjoy an overnight stay at Pahalgam.

Day 5 - Spend the day to explore Betaab Valley and much more

Visit Betaab Valley, and be prepared to be blown away with its beauty. Then don't miss Chandanwadi, which is gorgeous and serves as the starting point of Amarnath Yatra, and the Aru Valley. Wander around and see how nature turns you into a photographer, while surrounded by greenery here. If you have time you can also check out the Lidder River.

Day 6 - Get ready for Srinagar

If you don't feel like leaving this place, you can opt to spend some more time in Pahalgam and then head out to Srinagar in the afternoon. On your way to Srinagar, you can stop by Awantipura and check out the ruins of the 9th century Avantiswami Temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu. You will reach Srinagar by the end of the day after which you can relax and enjoy some local Kashmiri delicacies

Day 7 - Explore Srinagar

Spend the day exploring Srinagar or just relax the way you want. If you are keen to see what the city has to offer, then start with the Mughal gardens, which were built by Shah Jahan. Then, you can check out Nishat Gardens, Pari Mahal Gardens, Shalimar Gardens, whereas the Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden is also worth a visit. Also, visit the local markets to buy saffron, some Kashmiri pashmina, and souvenirs to take back home.

Kashmir travel itinerary: offbeat and for all

  • Continent: Asia
  • Country: India
  • Categories: Kashmir
  • Tags: Achabal , Kokernag , South Kashmir

Sandeepa Chetan

Sandeepa Chetan

The crowded Mughal gardens of Srinagar – Chashmeshahi , Shalimar and Nishat , left us wanting for more. We decided to explore the lesser known parts of Kashmir. We headed south and started our exploration with Kokernag .

We recommend this Kashmir travel itinerary based on our travels in Kashmir. It’s offbeat and away from the maddening tourist crowd, yet it’s suitable for all kinds of travellers.

Offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary 1: Lesser known Mughal gardens of Kashmir

Achabal, Kokernag and Verinag.

Kokernag is the biggest botanical garden in Kashmir .

Kokernag Botanical Garden, Kashmir, India.

Tip: For its central location and proximity to Anantnag, we chose to stay in Achabal.

Offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary 2: Experience a “real” city in Kashmir

Think of a big city near where you live. Now think of a smaller city close to it, almost like a suburb. Now think of peak hours, traffic and people leaving for work.

We usually associate Kashmir only with a beautiful holiday. Almost forgetting that the people of Kashmir lead normal lives in Kashmir, just like we do back home. They all head to central Srinagar (big city) for work in the morning. Head back to their homes (in smaller cities like Anantnag) in the evening. This makes the road connecting Srinagar to Anantnag susceptible to “peak traffic hours”.

People are busy discussing copper prices to decide which boiler to invest in for this winter.

Offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary 3: Aharbal waterfalls

The Aharbal waterfalls are a day trip from Achabal.

The Aharbal waterfalls and the walkway next to it, Kashmir

Our visit to the Aharbal waterfalls gave us a first-hand experience of the fickle weather of the Himalayan mountains. It had been dark and gloomy when we reached the meadows around the Aharbal waterfalls. By the time we were on the walkway to the waterfalls, it had become bright and sunny!

The meadows around the Aharbal waterfalls, Kashmir

By then, we had spent a few days in the tourist bungalow at Achabal. The caretaker and the staff treated us like their personal guests. Our sudden decision to not turn up for the night would have got them worried sick. We decided to be good responsible guests and “reach home on time”. We walked up to the Sangam point, said our goodbyes to the nomads and headed back.

Offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary 4: Sulphur springs at Kolam Chinar

On our way to the Mughal garden of Verinag, we saw a board saying these were medicinal sulphur springs. We decided to give these a look. We got off the Tata Sumo taxi at this board and went looking for these springs. Without realising it, we had walked past the sulphur springs. Clearly, they were nothing great to look at.

Shepherds taking their flock of sheep into the hills

They let us leave only after assurances that we would return to stay with them for longer.

Offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary 5: Temples and ruins

Another route from Achabal goes to the Mattan Temple and the sun temple ruins at Martand. The temple at Mattan has formidable security all around it.

A temple at Mattan in South Kashmir

Offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary 6: Forest walking at Daksum

Ahead of Kokernag, at the base of the Sinthan Pass is the village of Daksum. Just before the village is the Rajpari Wildlife Sanctuary. It is surrounded by a dense coniferous forest. The melting glacial waters flow as a stream through it.

The Rajpari Wildlife Sanctuary at Daksum, Kashmir

Offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary 7: Sinthan top for snow

Sinthan Top is the one place in Kashmir that has snow all year round. Even when the meadows of Gulmarg turn green, Sinthan Top is still covered in snow.

Sinthan Top, Kashmir, India

Offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary 8: If you want to go really offbeat in Kashmir then head to Chatpal

Chatpal, for us, tops the list of offbeat places in Kashmir .

Chatpal, Kashmir, India

We began our stay in South Kashmir with Kokernag. We made Achabal our “headquarters” and traveled to all the places we have mentioned above by local, shared Tata Sumo taxis. For most places, we would first go to Anantnag. The different taxi stands in Anantnag have regular connections to all other places.

This part of Kashmir was a perfect way for us to explore the real beauty of Kashmir, together with the local people of Kashmir. Offbeat enough to stay away from the crowds, this part of Kashmir helped us ease into our travels. We felt more confident while exploring the remote valleys in Northern Kashmir or venturing out for the Amaranth yatra .

Top tips for this offbeat Kashmir travel itinerary

  • People in the smaller villages of Kashmir are not used to seeing many tourists. They are as curious about you as you are about them. Do not consider the questions offensive. Be friendly with the locals.
  • Resorts and ponies will not be found in these parts of Kashmir. This is the real Kashmir, not the “showcase for tourists” Kashmir!
  • The front seat of the Tata Sumo taxis, next to the driver was our favourite seat. It doesn’t get cramped if the driver takes in more passengers and is perfect for “photography on-the-go”!
  • We traveled everywhere by a shared Tata Sumo taxi. The routes below will help you plan an itinerary. Italics indicate no changeover .
  • Route 1: Achabal-Anantnag- Kokernag -Vailoo. Change over into the Tata Sumos that go to Kishtwar. Vailoo-Daksum-Sinthan Top.
  • Route 2: Achabal-Anantnag- Kolam Chinar -Verinag. There is also a direct road connecting Achabal and Verinag. Regular shared taxi service, however, might not be available on this direct route.
  • Route 3: Achabal-Anantnag-Kulgam-Aharbal.
  • Achabal-Ranipora-Martand-Mattan. OR Achabal-Anantnag-Mattan-Martand.

Absolutely stunning pictures and information. Thank you. But you have put me to worry as we have already planned a trip with Thomas cook. Thank God, that we have taken a personalised tour so that we can change our itinerary a bit. We have a stay at srinagar in houseboat and a resort and a day stay in gulmarg and 2 days in pahalgam. Out itinerary is as follows. 2nd May 2019 to 8th May 2019 Day 1 srinagar houseboat stay Day 2 n 3 pahalgam Day 4 in gulmarg Day 5 n 6 in srinagar We have chosen the “non listed” hotels at least to be away from the “typical touristy crowd”. Please guide us as to how do we manage now to see at least a few of these places mentioned on your blog? Please reply as soon as possible

Need help on following:

Where to stay if I need to visit Chatpal and Sinthan Top.

Can two day trips from Pahalgam do it for us?

How to book the forest house/guest house at Aharbal?

Hello thepoetwithin, would recommend staying at Achabal and doing day trips from there to Aharbal, Sithan Top and Chatpal. You can get in touch with the tourism officers at the Jammu and Kashmir tourism website regarding booking.

That moment when you realize editing your itinerary due to lack of time could be so painful! I had to drop Kokernag plans during my trip to Kashmir and your pics and this article made me regret that decision. Lovely pics! And people do need to know Kashmir beyond Srinagar, Sonmarg and Gulmarg.

Hello Vishvarsha, our favourite term when it comes to such a situation is “next time” 🙂 And you are absolutely correct about Kashmir being more than Srinagar , Gulmarg and Sonmarg!

' src=

Beautiful place and pictures. Thanks for sharing this part of Kashmir.

Glad you like these pictures from South Kashmir. It is a lovely region of Kashmir!

' src=

Man you guys have popped opened my eyes… never even thought such beautiful places could be within our reach….

Indeed Prasadji! This region of Kashmir is relatively easy to explore, with some good stay options everywhere. And so much quieter and less crowded than the touristy side of Kashmir. Warmer people too 🙂

' src=

Wow. Had never heard of those places and the MTDC bungalow near Aharbal sounds very promising.

Did you mean to say JKTDC? By the way, do bear in mind that JKTDC and the JK tourism Board are two different entities. JK Tourism Board offers these accommodations and their prices are a lot more affordable than JKTDC, since they work on a no-profit-no-loss model.

Around here we also saw some dilapidated houses of the Kashmir Pandits, who lived here many years back. Some houses still had the names of the families intact. Everything else, however, was in a state of decay. Very beautiful images with information !!

The Perfect 5 Days in Kashmir | A Do-It-Yourself Road Trip

Kashmir 5 day trip Zoji La

Kashmir was as beautiful as I’d heard. It met all my expectations and more. Tall chinar laden mountains, hurt-my-eyes expansive green valleys, colourfully dressed chatty locals, delectable local food, lush gardens of flowers and fountains, a marvellous drop of the mountain at every turn of the road… not surprising then that Kashmir is called Heaven on Earth.

Therefore, Kashmir warrants not one, but many visits to take it all in. The itinerary I’ve listed here is the most commonly done, an introduction to Kashmir if you will, and a tourist should start here before attempting the more challenging routes. You can also avail of a travel agent’s multi-day package (dime-o-dozen, INR 12-15k / person usually for 4 nights and 5 days), but here’s how to do it yourself, by road, the best way to experience the region’s true beauty, in my view.

kashmir trip with parents

What was slightly putting-off in Kashmir and took some getting used to, was the constant soliciting, selling and overpricing of goods and services. Tourism is the only source of income for many in the valley and it seemed to me as if the locals aimed to wring the most out of every deal. Therefore, expect to be overcharged for everything, and thus, bargain hard everywhere. Although, I think there’s a thick line between a ‘tourist’ and a ‘friends/family’ in Kashmir. Once you cross that line, things turn around remarkably.

kashmir trip with parents

Now, to the five-day do-it-yourself Kashmir road trip itinerary.

Kashmir 5 days roadtrip Map

What this itinerary doesn’t have. Pony rides. Luxury stays. Leisure time off. Winter sports.

There are easier ways to do this journey, through a multi-day organized tour like this or this .

About Kashmir

Kashmir is the northernmost geographical region of India, made of the Himalayan mountain ranges, verdant valleys, lush lakes, and gushing rivers. The valley was apparently formed of a lake, drained through the gap of Baramulla. India controls half the area of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which comprises Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, while Pakistan controls the rest, divided into two provinces, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The dominant religion of the region is Islam.

Tourism in Kashmir is fraught with constant tensions between Pakistan, Islamic militants, and the Indian army. But, for the most part, tourists are safe.

5 days Kashmir road trip Shikara Dal Lake

Moving Around

There are two ways to do my itinerary.

First – set Srinagar as the base and take day trips to nearby areas of interest. The towns mentioned in this plan are all in different directions and you’ll likely pass Srinagar in all of them, as you move from one to another.

The other way is to go from one town to another, passing Srinagar but not stopping there. This will increase your travel time, but you might want to do it to merely to spend your night in a different place (also, usually, a different altitude).

A daily cab (Innova/ Tavera) with a driver can be hired starting at INR 2500/day.

If you prefer a bike, which we used, they can be rented from Kashmir Travelogue or Kashmir Adventure Bikers for INR 1400/day. Documents asked: Passport copy, Aadhaar card, Driver’s license. You’ll need to deposit your Aadhaar card with them.

Day 1: Srinagar

The capital of Kashmir is noisy, dusty, curious, colourful. We arrived with zero bookings and were approached by Nissar at the airport who promised a world-class hotel at Dal Lake for INR 4500/ night. We agreed to check it out before committing—we intended to use the free ride from the airport to the city (It normally costs INR 500 to go from the airport to Dal Lake/ Lal Chowk. There is a prepaid taxi booth outside the airport gate. However, Nissar promised to adjust the amount with a full-day car hire for sightseeing which would’ve cost INR 2000. Alternately, we could simply pay him INR 500 if we didn’t like his place, or didn’t take the cab. To our tired minds, it seemed like a no-loss deal).

The ride through Srinagar was eventful, with traffic jams and noisy honks; people in Srinagar love their horns and use them liberally. We arrived at Ghat 17 and were ferried by a shikara to a cluster of ramshackle houseboats, one of which was Nissar’s Star of Kashmir (not available online). The houseboat was not luxurious but it was unique, and we loved the wooden loft that jutted daintily out into the water. The area was less touristy and crowded than I’d expected. We were a bit tired from the early morning flight, and so, we decided to stay put, at least for the night (we negotiated the nightly charge down to INR 3000/night eventually). We spent another thirty minutes fending off the package deal the houseboat manager was trying to push down on us (this would be a recurring theme) before we managed to retire to our quaint room.

5 days in Kashmir roads

If you like serene and quiet, you could base yourself on the less touristy Nigeen Lake , instead of Dal Lake. But we found staying at Dal Lake convenient because it was in the middle of the city. I’ll also recommend staying in a houseboat rather than on land; the experience is memorable.

Sukoon Houseboats was recommended to us for a luxury stay on Dal Lake. It looked beautiful but was unavailable in the days we went.

Things to do in Srinagar

Shankaracharya Temple: The temple—dedicated to Lord Shiva and from the 9th century AD—is located on top of the Shankaracharya Hill on the Zabarwan Range in Srinagar. At a height of 1,000 feet above the valley, it gives a nice view of the city of Srinagar, and especially, of the serpentine 8 km long Dal Lake. The temple can be reached by climbing about 250 steps. The area is under CRPF control, so you cannot carry cameras or mobile phones to the top. There are no locker facilities (that I noticed). So, best to leave them in the cab or at your hotel before you come.

Mughal Gardens: There are several so-called pleasure gardens in Kashmir. The most famous are Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashma Shahi and Pari Mahal. These gardens are fashioned after the Persian Paradise gardens—made of terraces—arranged around a central water channel—lined with fountains—and planted with a variety of flowers and trees. In the end, though, one garden is like the other. Altogether, I enjoyed Nishat Garden the most. More on the gardens here .

5 days Kasmir road trip Nishat Garden

Shikara Ride: An hour-long shikara ride costs upwards of INR 1000 for an hour (again, depending on your negotiation skills) and takes you to up to 7 points of interest in Dal Lake, which include a ‘function-boat’, some interesting movie spots ( Mission Kashmir !), and the Dal Lake market. The best time to take the ride is at dusk just around sunset. The weather is balmy and the ride is pleasantly soporific. We were exhausted when we did it, but the ride took away all our tiredness (just as Aamir, our shikara rower promised). Beware of the many other shikaras that will row to yours, stick by its side, and try to sell you their overpriced goods.

Kashmir 5 days trip houseboat shikara ride

Lal Chowk:  is Srinagar’s city centre of sorts and also a bustling marketplace. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, unfurled the Indian national flag in 1948 in Lal Chowk, shortly after the country gained independence from the British. The chowk has been used for several political meetings since. The iconic clock tower at Lal Chowk was built in 1980. I preferred the shops here to elsewhere in the city, the ‘no bargaining’ policy (in many but not all stores) providing relief. But you’ve got to look for the good stuff.

Mosques : You’ll spot several unique mosques on your tour around Srinagar. Hazratbal Mosque and Jamia Mosque are among the most impressive. The Jamia Masjid is located in the middle of the Old City, very near to Lal Chowk. The impressive and humongous mosque (33,000 people can pray here at one time!) was commissioned by Sultan Sikandar in 1394 CE and today is considered the focal point of local dissent and political discourse.  You’ll often find the main doors locked, in fear of a riot. The Hazratbal Shrine is another impressive mosque located in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar. It is said to be home to a relic,  Moi-e-Muqqadas , which is widely believed to be the hair of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

Day 2: Sonmarg

Sonmarg is located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, about 80 km from Srinagar. The ‘Golden Meadow’ is perched at 8,960 ft, and is close to several peaks such as Machoi Glacier, Sirbal Peak, and Kolahoi Peak. It also has a historical significance, as a gateway on the ancient Silk Road, connecting Jammu and Kashmir with Tibet. Ponies can be hired for a trip up to Thajiwas Glacier , a major attraction during the summer months. But what we really enjoyed, was the 25 km ride to zero point through Zoji La pass.

kashmir trip with parents

At about 15 km from Sonmarg is the Baltal Valley whose splendour can be enjoyed on the ride through Zoji La Pass. The valley acts as a base for pilgrims camping for the yatra to the nearby Amarnath Temple . (There are two routes: Sonamarg – Baltal Route and Pahalgam – Chandanwari Track Route)

An under-construction tunnel is expected to replace Zoji La Pass, enabling all-weather connection between Srinagar and Kargil.

Day 3: Pahalgam

Pahalgam is located at an altitude of 7,200 feet and is 95 km east of Srinagar. The travel time from Srinagar is around 3 hours. The town is the starting point of the annual pilgrimage to the holy cave of Amarnath. The Lidder River runs through it offering several picture-perfect picnic spots. Literally, the name of the town translates to mean the ‘Valley of Shepherds’.

The main things to see in Pahalgam are Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari. The ride to Pahalgam is plenty interesting too, lined as the streets are with apple orchards, saffron fields, and cricket-bat factories.

Betab Valley lies between the two Himalayan Ranges–Pir Panjal and Zanskar. It can be reached in ten minutes from the Pahalgam city centre. The valley is named after the Sunny Deol-Amrita Singh hit debut film Betaab . The final point is a man-made park (INR 100 entry fee) with some good views of the Lidder River and mountains. The park is worth a 30-minute stop and it can get crowded.

5 days in Kashmir Betaab Valley

Aru Valley is located 12 km from Pahalgam and takes about 20-30 minutes to reach. As always, the ride was better than the destination with several awesome views of the Lidder River and the valley as we rode along to the top. Aru Valley is also the base camp for trekking to the Kolhoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake. It is also the location of the JKTDC at Aru Valley. You can take a pony ride to see the valley or have a chai and plate of bread pakora at the JKTDC canteen once you reach the final point.

Chandanwari  is where the Amarnath Yatra starts—the other route. It is situated at an elevation of 9,500 feet and is located 16 kilometres from Pahalgam.

5 days in Kashmir road trip Pahalgam town

Outside vehicles are not allowed to do sightseeing in Pahalgam. They can only drop you at the hotel. Only local taxis can ferry tourists in the town. Since we had a bike, we had no problem moving around.

Day 4: Pahalgam

Laze around in the day and take in more of the beauty of Pahalgam, or move your ass and head to one of the highly touted treks that start from here. Among the popular ones are the Sheshnag and Verinag Lake treks. There are several trek organizers to go with, Highhill Tours being one. We were too tired to do a trek, so we just soaked the beauty around and lazed in the market area—both plenty interesting. Be sure to eat at Food Point , a nondescript eatery frequented by locals. I had my first wazwan dishes here. If you fancy an early morning coffee, go to Volga . But again, be prepared to tip heavily.

Kashmir 5 days road trip Pahalgam scenes

Day 5: Gulmarg

At 8,700 feet above sea level, Gulmarg is best visited in winter when there is a couple of feet deep snow, and the mountains are covered in them, offering entrancing views. Gulmarg is also home to the famous skiing location of Kongdoor-Aferwat. In the summer and autumn months though, you can simply enjoy rides in the Gulmarg Gondola and the views of the valley it offers.

The Gulmarg Gondola is Asia’s largest and highest and the world’s second-largest and second-highest cable car project. It can be ridden in two phases. Phase 1 is at 9800 feet above sea level and takes you to Kongdoor Valley. Tickets are available from 9 am to 5 pm. Ticket costs are INR 750/ pp.

Phase 2 of the Gulmarg Gondola is at 13,700 feet above sea level. Tickets are available from 10 am to 4 pm. Phase 2 is often closed due to bad weather or maintenance and there is no way to check beforehand. To go to phase 2 you need to reach phase 1, either through the gondola or on horse/ foot (takes 45 min-1 hours). From Phase 2 you can see the Nanda Devi peak and, some say, even the LOC. Ticket costs are INR 950/ pp.

You can buy the tickets online but you can also buy on-site—preferable really—because what if the gondola is closed for the day? Also, all you get online is a voucher which will be required to be exchanged for a boarding pass at the ticket counter. So, there’s really no point.

Another tip for the Gondola: either be late or very early because the ticket queues can be long (especially during season—the winter months). Also, do not listen to the stories the local guides tell you. The heckling can be relentless and they’re just out to make a quick buck.

Kashmir 5 days itinerary Gulmarg

The Khyber Resort is a good upscale alternative to JKTDC. I’ve heard of people planning their trip in winter to accommodate availability in the hotel. We stayed at the JKTDC hutments and booked on arrival at the clubhouse. If the manager is not around, go to the restaurant to get his contacts. Or book online.

The ride from Gulmarg back to Srinagar airport takes approximately 2 hours. Take a detour to Lal Chowk to do some last-minute shopping, or eat at a local restaurant such as Ahdoos or Jhelum Cafe .

Good to Know

Partaking in Kashmiri Wazwan should be on top of your list of things to do. Kashmiri Wazwan dishes are multi-Kashmiri dishes, usually meat-based using lamb, beef or chicken, and served during weddings. During a wedding, guests are seated in a group on a dastarkhwan or sheet and they share the meal in a Traem . Most restaurants in Kashmir list several delectable Wazwan dishes on their menu. Rista (meatballs in red gravy), rogan josh (tender lamb cooked with Kashmiri spices), and yakhni (meat in spiced yoghurt curry) are among the most popular ones.

Kashmir 5 days trip food

There are only a few shops in Srinagar that sell alcohol (since liquor is haram in Islam). 3 are on Boulevard Road. One is hidden inside a shanty next to Ghat 7 (I think – check with your driver). Prices are astronomical and arbitrary, but what can you do? As far as I know, one cannot purchase alcohol anywhere else in Kashmir; only in these stores in Srinagar.

Good Time to Visit

March is the most pleasant with remnants of snow and the onset of balmy weather. October, when I visited, was not half bad. The valleys were green, with loads of flowers, days sunny, and nights tolerably cold. I didn’t see any snow though. The best time to visit for cryo-phobics is March to October. For those looking to enjoy winter, it would be between November and March.

Avoid shopping at tourist hotspots like Gulmarg and the Dal Lake Market. I found goods at Lal Chowk more reasonably priced and the vendors less likely to hike prices, therefore avoiding acrimonious negotiations. On the way back from Pahalgam, you can pick up saffron from the store before Pampore (INR 150/1 gm). You can pick up Kahwa from departmental stores to gift people (INR 150 onwards for a small box). Other commonly purchased gifts are dry fruits, Kashmiri shawls, stoles, and carpets. Try getting them from Lal Chowk or the Polo View Market .

5 days in Kashmir Lal Chowk

Useful Resources

Varghis Khan’s blog was a useful resource to plan our trip.

We checked the JKTDC website for Government Hotels in Jammu and Kashmir. Like all government hotels, they were in great locations and inexpensive (INR 1700-2300/night). Not the best maintained though.

Read the TripAdvisor forums, such as this one on Gulmarg Gondola , before you visit a place, to prepare for the assault of touts.

Alternate Itinerary Additions

You can consider visiting Yousmarg, Doodhpathri, and Aharbal, all 2-3 hours from Srinagar and much less touristy than the ones above.

5 days in Kashmir Yousmarg Doodpathri Aharbal

Alternate 5-day trip

Guerez valley or Gurais, is located in the high Himalayas, about 123 kilometres from Srinagar in northern Kashmir. It is 8400 feet above sea level. While Gurez is touted to be beautiful, it is close to the ‘LOC’ or Line of Control and falls barely on the Indian side of the border. For the longest time, Gurez was off-limit to tourists, and even today, it is quite difficult to reach.

Srinagar to Guerez by road looked like an awesome alternative which we evaluated but eventually discarded because it was our first time in Kashmir and we wanted a taste of the tourist track before we committed to something more adventurous. We got to know that a chopper service (INR 3000/per head) to Guerez is available at the Srinagar airport. The service is available only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It wasn’t operational when we went probably because of the Covid-19-related restrictions. By road, the journey takes 6-7 hours. There’s a JKTDC guest house at Guerez for an overnight stay.

  • First, I go to TripAdvisor and check out top things to do, top places, and experiences. I use this to make a rough itinerary.
  • From TripAdvisor I often go to Viator to book day tours. I love their user friendly platform and flexible cancellation policies. Compare their offers with GetYourGuide , which is great too.
  • I book my accommodations in Booking because of their flexibility and that the bookings are easily cancellable. The mobile app is great and the genius discounts are on point.
  • I recommend getting the Priority Pass . It gives you access to airport lounges and has helped me through many long waits. It’s definitely well worth the money.
  • And I am literally always on Skyscanner . I get to see the best airfares, and the airline / third party providers offering them. Try the “From: origin city” to “To: Everywhere” option to ignite your imagination on where to travel to next.

kashmir trip with parents

Hello everyone,

I've listed some places I'm interested in visiting below. Could you please assist me in creating a day-by-day itinerary? I understand that covering all these places might not be feasible given our group's composition. I'm also willing to consider excluding destinations that might not be ideal to visit in May or require lengthy pony rides to reach

-Pahalgam (Lidder View Park, Aru Valley , Betab Valley, Chandanwadi)

-Gulmarg have a query regarding the feasibility of taking the gondola ride with a kid, particularly for phase 2 in mid-May)

-Doodhpatri Or Yusmarg or Chatpal

- Gurez Valley or Dawar (reading forums suggest that gurez may not be best for kid and senior parents)

Your suggestions and insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

First will give you some insights based on it you will be able to finalise your destinations and then I can help you with itanary

Gandola ride second phase in May is fine with toddler absolutely no issues subject to weather conditions if it's cloudy ( bad weather conditions very rare chances in May though) you must avoid second phase with toddler. Obtaining Gandola tickets for second phase is peak season is a task.Prebook ASAP.

Aharbal waterfall is accessible through steps if parents are ok with climbing steps you surely can add it to your itanary. It's mesmarising

Doodhpathri if you don't opt for hike / pony ride is just a picnic spot with packed lunch in meadows

Gurez is packpackers/ trekkers paradise if wanna opt for it need minimum 2 days

Chatpal is good with basic stay and food options which will connect you to calmness of nature

You won't be able to fit everything. if visiting for the first time stick to gulmarg sonmarg Pahalgam srinagar doodhpathri one of Aharbal or chatpal

PS : I have been to all the places you mentioned and views are based on own experience not copy copypasted from others

Thank you, Asmiv, for the detailed information about each place. It's incredibly helpful for me to plan my trip effectively, especially since this is my first visit and a dream destination for my parents. I'm eager to make the most out of our time there.

I'm particularly interested in locations that offer stunning mountain views combined with rivers or lakes, such as Wular and Kishanganga without too much of a trek.

-Gulmarg (looks like gondola rides are available for booking 15 days prior only)

-Gurez Valley/Dawar or Doodhpatri

A day trip to Sonmarg/Gumarg was not advised because you asked for a leisurely vacation.

So for 7 days your itanary can be as follow

Day 1 arrival and transfer to sonmarg enroute visit Shalimar garden hazaratbal dargah evening at leisure

Day 3 Sonamarg to gurez and stay ( many option in gurez as well as Dawar ) enroute Razdaan Pass Kishan ganga ( keep id cards handy for verification at every checkpost)

Day 4 gurez sightseeing and back to srinagar ( this day will be little tiring but easily manageble)

Day 5 srinagar local sightseeing ( an easy day)

Day 6 transfer to Pahalgam enroute visit awantipora ruins apple orchards bat factory do visit Martand sun temple And mamleshwar , leisure time at lidder park view stay in Pahalgam

Day 7 ABC valley visit and back to srinagar leisure shikara ride and stay in hotel/houseboat

Day 8 departure

You can make most of your Kashmir trip with this itanary and don't worry it won't be hectic.

Thank you, Asmiv, for your comprehensive response. I appreciate it.

It's still very remote. You will also need extra woolens for gurez specially for late evenings and early mornings check suitablity for toddler. Consider stay options with electricity back up and some heating facilities even for May in gurez.

Also if finalising Gurez carry jio postpaid nothing else will work there

Thank you, Asmiv, for your assistance.

Could you please help an alternative itinerary option excluding Gurez? I'm considering this option as my wife has agreed to it, but still uncertain about just visiting Gurez briefly for a night and moving on the next day. Are there any other places with diverse landscapes that we could explore, such as Gulmarg, Doodhpathri, Lolab, or Bangus?
