About Travel Man

Screenshot 2021-05-24 at 14.40.05.png

Since 2015 Travel Man has been delivering the definitive guide to making the most of 48 hours (and sometimes a little longer) in some of the most exciting destinations in the world.   In the process it has become the most popular holiday show on UK television.

For the first 9 series the show was hosted by comedic polymath (Actor, Presenter Writer, Director) Richard Ayoade. Since 2020 the show’s host has been the comedic polymath (Comedian,  Presenter, Writer, Director) Joe Lycett . Joining them on their travels have been some of the finest and most available comic talents from Britain and the US, among them Bill Bailey, Sarah Millican, Lena Dunham, Jon Hamm and Paul Rudd.

The show’s aim remains the same; a mini-break with the boring bits taken out.  A guide that combines famous attractions, the quirky and the cultural, mixing the must-see and the offbeat, and making sure there is always lots to do, whether it’s a cookery class, an interactive tour, or even an art lesson.

Travel Man’s peak audience for an episode is 2.8 million and its YouTube channel attracts 2 million views a month.  The show has been nominated for 2 BAFTA awards and won 5 Royal Television Society Awards, the most recent of these being a Best Presenter gong for Joe Lycett.  Travel Man has been shown in 62 countries.  It has received glowing reviews from as far afield as the New York Times and the Australian Guardian, and was described as ‘hilarious and surprisingly informative’ by The Times.

The show is produced in Birmingham by North One Television .

On my radar: Katherine Ryan’s cultural highlights

The comedian on her favourite new painter, the downfall of Diddy, and wanting to save Britney Spears

B orn in Ontario, Canada in 1983, comedian Katherine Ryan won the Funny Women award in 2008. Since then she has appeared on numerous TV sitcoms and panel shows including Taskmaster and 8 Out of 10 Cats . She has two Netflix standup specials, In Trouble and Glitter Room , and in 2020 created Netflix comedy series The Duchess . She has won the outstanding female comedy entertainment performance award at the National Comedy Awards twice, in 2022 and 2023. She lives in London with her husband and three children. Her new tour, Battleaxe , is coming to venues across the UK from 5 September.

Jon MacGregor

The Growing Pains of Invasive Things by Jon MacGregor.

I discovered Jon MacGregor on the Instagram page Ladies of Madison Avenue . He’s from Georgia but goes to school in New York now – he must have been born in the 2000s. He paints using really classic styles: his paintings are beautiful, you would want to put them in any stately home, but there’s this modern twist. He loves fun, modern imagery; some of it is a little bit dark. It’s a lovely blend. It’s just so special to find someone that young who’s so talented. He actually reminds me a little bit of Joe Lycett.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs mansion raid

Police raiding the Los Angeles home of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs on 25 March.

It’s just such an interesting story in real time, to wake up every day and uncover more details about lawsuits and allegations and what was really going on in the hip-hop industry that I loved so much when I was growing up. It’s a reminder that nothing is what it seems. It’s this dismantling of really toxic patriarchal structures: in cinema, we saw first, but now in hip-hop music. And they’re so intertwined. It’s such an encouraging development that one by one, these structures of abuse are finally being challenged, and people are speaking out about them.

Beyoncé: Cowboy Carter

I love this album. It hits all the right things: it’s controversial, it’s making a lot of people angry, but critics are reviewing it really well. I think it’s brave to take on a polar genre from what you’re used to doing and reinvent yourself like that. And she executed it beautifully – she’s impressed even Dolly Parton. The first single, Texas Hold ’Em, still feels like Beyoncé: it doesn’t betray her authentic voice but it’s totally something new. I don’t get tired of hearing it on the radio even though it’s on all the time.

Saltburn (dir Emerald Fennell, 2023)

after newsletter promotion

Barry Keoghan in Saltburn.

I’ll always remember this movie because it was recommended to me by my teenage daughter. It was harrowing to realise: “Oh, my daughter can watch stuff like this and understand it.” But while her friends and her were sensationalised by all the gratuitous sexual content, what I loved was the portrayal of the posh family. Rosamund Pike’s character never directly addresses her children, and they never open up about anything real. I have observed that about posh people. In Canada, we have rich people and poor people, but we don’t have a culture of vast, clashing class systems.

Britney Spears’s Instagram

It was uplifting that Britney was freed from her conservatorship and was allowed to buy chewing gum again without permission. But then we see this, and what’s going on there? It’s almost a dramatic piece of theatre. She dances on Instagram every day, and millions of people are watching, but they can’t comment. And she’s very clearly unwell. There’s a poetic sadness behind it: it’s beautiful, in a way, because she’s smiling and dancing, and we’re happy she’s got her life back. But it brings out the rescue syndrome in me: I want to go and be Britney’s friend and save the day.

Nando’s loaded fries

A dish of Nando’s loaded fries

Nando’s has special loaded fries that you can’t get delivered – the presentation’s probably compromised on the back of a scooter. I love loaded fries: I’m a busy lady, and I like everything all in one bowl. I love spice. I love chicken. I feel like it’s really Canadian, because our signature dish is poutine – wetted chips remind me of home. My husband and I feel like it’s a mark of honour to have the extra-hot level of spice. My daughter likes medium, but she’s British, she was born here, so she can be forgiven.

Dubai Comedy Festival 2024: How family life became Katherine Ryan's biggest inspiration

As she prepares to open the event on friday, the comedian discusses how being a 'traditional mom' provides a flourish of source material for her routine.

In Katherine Ryan’s last Netflix special, Glitter Room, the Canadian-Irish comedian celebrated the freedom that comes with being a single mother.

Five years later, she is in relative domestic bliss with a husband and two more children.

Speaking to The National ahead of opening the Dubai Comedy Festival on Friday, Ryan, 40, is surprised at how well she adapted to being “a traditional mom". That journey is also the subject of the new reality show Katherine Ryan: Parental Guidance , airing on British broadcaster W.

"I think it's God's way of just telling you to never say never," she reveals before her gig at Dubai Opera . "As a mother, I am very hands-on and really present and I wasn't expecting any of that. Because in my Glitter Room show, I was advocating for women to focus on themselves, friends, family and education and you don't really need a man ... and then things change."

In an ironic twist, Ryan appreciates she met her former high school boyfriend Bobby Kootstra in 2019 while promoting Glitter Room in Canada and were married six months later.

Her new show in Dubai, Battle Axe!, finds her exploring the insights and uncomfortable truths of marriage and being a parent.

It will also be a chance for Ryan to see if her acerbic style still resonates with today’s audiences.

"I am a self-author of my comedy so I do talk a lot about my life and mistakes but now I do have to consider more people’s feelings," she says. "Like, I want to talk about my family and kids but I don't want to dunk on my husband constantly either because I do plan to keep him around.

"And with all that has been happening in my life I have pretty much checked out of comedy for a couple of years and the landscape has changed during that time. So the challenge for me now is how to still make self-deprecating jokes and not be afraid of this new genre of comedy where people are scared of being cancelled and are very careful. I feel like I have always articulated myself while being a little bit provocative.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sky TV (@skytv)

Chances are the crowd knows what they are getting when Ryan hits the stage.

Born in Canada to an Irish father and Canadian mother, she first landed in London in 2008 for a month-long holiday with a former partner. That move eventually became permanent after making waves on the local comedy circuit before gaining national recognition with memorable appearances as a guest in UK panel shows 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

Behind the zany on-screen persona, however, was a single mother determined to make this comedy career work.

“I was in this country as a young single mother, and there was a certain shame attached to that and I thought I was going to have to go back to Canada with my tail between my legs and explain to my family why I'm a loser,” she says.

“I didn't want to do that. I just thought, no, I am lucky to have robust mental health and youth on my side. I told myself there are a thousand things that I can do and I'm going to do them. And for sure it was that kind of hyper-confidence and hyper-independence that made me just delusional enough to think that I could make something of myself.”

The Duchess Season 1. Katherine Ryan as Katherine in episode 1 of Duchess Season 1. Cr. Simon Ridgway/NETFLIX © 2020

Being a relative outsider also helped Ryan find her niche within a crowded comedy scene .

"The UK is such a small island and to them, I sounded really American but a nicer version because I'm from Canada and I would talk about pop culture and things they really haven't heard before," she says. "So I started giving my take on life in the UK and by doing that I became and continue to be a very gracious student of UK culture.”

With Ryan also venturing into acting with starring roles in British comedy series The Duchess and Romantic Getaway, her profile is arguably as high as it’s ever been. That said, past struggles taught her not to rest on her laurels for too long. Hence her move to add a debut Dubai date alongside other familiar cities in this latest tour.

“I've seen it happen with famous comedians that I love in that they get comfortable and there aren't enough people around to tell them that's not funny," she says. "I miss those days of having to win over a new audience and that is a really exciting challenge. To be sort of anonymous in a new place is a really great way to do that. It keeps you honest, humble and really hard working.”

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announced the arrest of a 27-year-old Broward County man Thursday, who she says is accused of trafficking a disabled woman for sex.

Rundle said following an undercover operation by the SAO’s Human Trafficking Task Force and the Miami Police Department, communication on MegaPersonals, a classified hookup website, led to a $140 transaction for sexual services between 27-year-old Justin Elias Portes, of Sunrise, and a 31-year-old victim.

According to an arrest report, an undercover officer met with the victim at a downtown Miami hotel where she received $200 in undercover funds to exchange with Portes for an hour of sexual intercourse.

Subsequently, upon exchanging money with Portes, undercover officers signaled for his takedown, leading to his detainment by tactical officers, the report stated.

Authorities said upon the victim’s arrival at a downtown Miami hotel, law enforcement officers observed signs indicating that the victim had physical and cognitive disabilities.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the victim had been transported to the hotel for prostitution purposes by Portes, who detectives say also profited from her engagements in prostitution.

It was also discovered that Portes was wearing an ankle monitor linked to an ongoing DUI and drug possession case in Broward County at the time of his arrest, according to investigators.

Portes’ arrest report states that he gave detectives consent to search his electronic devices while being interviewed.

Police said on April 5, Portes sent the victim a text message asking, “You want to boost your page today? Or not. Let me know before I give the car to my girl.”

Detectives said “boosting” in that case refers to refreshing online advertisements, including those found on websites known for soliciting prostitution.

Authorities said the proactive investigation on this case is part of the broader efforts to combat human trafficking ahead of the Formula One event scheduled to take place in Miami-Dade from May 3-5.

“Those traffickers who feel that selling someone’s body is no different from selling bottled water at a sporting event are in for a shock when they come to Miami-Dade County,” said Fernandez Rundle in a press release.

“I, Miami Police Chief (Manny) Morales, and the members of my Human Trafficking Task Force will not tolerate or accept such activities, now or at any special event held in our community. Traffickers should get that message, loud and clear,” added Morales in the release.

Jail records show Portes is facing one count each of human trafficking, deriving support from proceeds of prostitution and directing another individual to a place of prostitution.

Portes appeared in a Miami-Dade courtroom Thursday, where a judge held him without bond and ordered him to stay away from the victim at all times.

Growing up in Brooklyn with two Holocaust survivor parents who almost never discussed the war, Allen Hershkowitz is now devoted to sounding the alarm over antisemitism sweeping the country.

It’s why the 69-year-old author of the memoir, “ Finding My Father’s Auschwitz File ” — which he wrote upon learning of his late father’s hidden Holocaust hell — plans a reading in Nashville “in response to the  recent Nazi parade  there,” said Hershkowitz.

In the book, Hershkowitz writes about being in the dark about the incomprehensible horrors his parents experienced in concentration camps – “stealing” dog food and enduring possible medical experimentation – while losing their former spouses, children, and parents to the Nazis’ death machine.

The author is bringing his anti-hate message to Nashville.

The incalculable pain of his parents’ quiet sorrow is what drives the Ridgefield, Conn., father of three to promote a hate-free world where “antisemitism is eradicated.”

In response to the surges of Jewish hate, Hershkowitz’s mandate is clear: “My purpose in life is to help alleviate suffering.” Citing a  recent survey  revealing some 20% of Americans under the age of 30 believe the Holocaust was a myth, the environmental scientist lamented that “hate is a result of ignorance.”

“As a boy, I didn’t understand evil,” said Hershkowitz, noting that his Polish-born parents took pains to shield him and his sister from their own personal horrors. But no one has the luxury to ignore today’s unchecked hatred. “What happened to my parents, the murder of their spouses, their children, their incarceration in concentration camps … people need to understand what Nazis do.

Never miss a story.

Nazism is the logical outcome of antisemitism.” Today’s disturbing rhetoric must be a wake-up call: “Saying you want to get rid of Jews, that’s what the Nazis do.”

Hershkowitz says he was particularly incensed by the  recent flap at an anti-Israel march in London , where police appeared to minimize the potency of swastikas, allegedly saying that the symbol synonymous with Nazi hate “was not necessarily antisemitic.” No, the author insists, “This is like walking around with a noose to hang black people from trees – it’s an unacceptable symbol.”

Despite the clearly tough road ahead, Hershkowitz says “I always have hope – optimism is a different story.”
