Tomdaya in Munnar? Kerala Tourism had us in the first half, not gonna lie!

Tom Holland and Zendaya, the onscreen Spiderman and his MJ, have been a golden couple in Hollywood in the past few years. The duo won the hearts of fans (not just MCU people) through their quirky, adorable posts, incredible on- and off-screen chemistry, and for being the definition of a healthy couple. They grab headlines every time they make an appearance as a couple.

Their Indian fans woke up on Friday to the surprising news of the couple landing in Mumbai to attend a private event.

The British actor and the Euphoria star were seen exiting the airport, which also exclusively serves people with private jets, as they arrive to attend the launch of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai.

Earlier, while promoting the film 'Uncharted', Tom had told the news agency IANS that he is a big fan of India, even though he never got a chance to visit the country. The actor had also expressed his wish to see the Taj Mahal in Agra. Now that they are here, is it too much to wish for a couple's day out in one of the most romantic destinations in India? This exact sentiment is what got us played by none other than Kerala Tourism.

The fans, especially those from Kerala, were in for a shock when the official Instagram page of the Kerala Tourism Department made an innocent-looking post of the adorable couple taking a stroll through the tea plantations of Munnar. The post was captioned: "Guess who we spotted far away from home?", a nod to the 2019 Spider-Man movie title. The photograph of Tom in a plain lavender tee and Zendaya in a sage green sweater enjoying the misty morning of the picturesque hill station in Kerala's Idukki does make sense.

And naturally, the post had the Kerala fanbase squealing, until they realised today's date (or looked at the actors' pants). The Kerala Tourism social media team pulled a prank so good that for a moment, the photograph looked so real. We were too late to realise that it wasn't. It was a Boston shopping date the couple had in April 2022 edited into a pic of Munnar. Just the perfect April Fool's Day prank we have seen on socials today.

However, we would like to thank Kerala Tourism for giving this wonderful idea. We just now have to manifest it. Now that the couple is in India, it isn't too much to wish for this post to turn into a reality, is it?

From famous social media pages to personalities, they all tried to crack a joke on their followers. In between this running trend, the official Twitter handle of Kerala tourism shared one photoshopped image that left the internet users in splits and opened a barrage of funny yet creative comments on it.

The official account of Kerala Tourism on Saturday, shared a picture of Holland and Zendaya holding hands as they posed standing between the picturesque lush green locale of Munnar.

The photograph was captioned: "Guess who we spotted far away from home?" and had the hashtags 'faraway home', 'Munnar' and 'Kerala tourism'.

This post instantly went viral and was recognised by followers as one of the best pranks on April Fool's Day. It has received more than 2,000,00 views on Twitter and several interesting comments.

"Wow...I saw them having lunch from a shop an hour before," commented a user.

"This was a good one. Everyone, including me, was fooled for a bit. I think whoever did this deserves credit ( assuming this was really a picture meant just for today and the idea was not really to make people believe that they were in Munnar!)," commented another user.

However, the original image was shot in the city of Boston, United States, last year in April.

Several users immediately realised that this is a fake photograph, while many more mistakenly believed it to be real.

Now, an edited photo of Zendaya and Tom is doing the rounds on social media, and reactions are pouring in from fans. On April 1, the official Instagram account of Kerala Tourism shared an edited photo of Zendaya and Tom with the caption, "Guess who we spotted far away from home?" The caption had the hashtags 'faraway home', 'Munnar' and 'Kerala tourism'. In no time, the comments section of the post was flooded with fans, who had been waiting for an update on Zendaya and Tom Holland's India visit. While some joked about the 'epic' photo, others found the April Fool's prank one of the best. Some also said the Tom and Zendaya's edited photo, which was originally taken in Boston last year, looked 'real'. While Zendaya wore an oversized green turtleneck sweater with grey pants and white sneakers, Tom was seen in a grey shirt, black trousers, and matching sneakers.

A person commented on Kerala Tourism's post, "Hater will say it's Photoshopped! As a designer, I stand by it it's real." One more person fell for the edited photo, and commented, "It's totally real. They were spotted at the Mumbai airport, and who knew they were en route to God's own country." One more asked, "Is this for real?" However, many joked about the quality of editing. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A slew of posts shared on the official social media handle of the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department in Kerala, intended to drive some traffic on the occasion of April Fool’s Day, has drawn flak from all quarters.

The posts, which went on to detail some uncanny and non-existent laws that had apparently come into effect in April, were deemed ‘insensitive’ and ‘belittled the progress that Kerala has made in uplifting women’. ‘Taking or giving dowry is not a punishable offence’, ‘married women should stay at home’, and ‘husband may assault a wife to bring her within his control’ were some of the messages shared on the WCD Department’s social media handle.

Though the intended idea was to highlight that no message on the cards posted was legal, it was lost in the subtext. The posts were quickly taken down by officials when the gravity of the matter was brought to light by netizens, who bombarded the page with their criticism and comments.

Kerala Tourism gets the joke

A photo posted by Kerala Tourism on their official Instagram handle showed Hollywood’s favourite couple, Tom Holland and Zendaya, strolling through rows of plantations in what appeared like Munnar. Though apparently fake, the photo triggered a heated debate as it was learned on Friday that the couple had arrived in Mumbai.

Tom Holland, Zendaya ‘pictured’ in Kerala’s Munnar, fans call it ‘April fool prank’

Los Angeles: After being spotted in Mumbai, a picture of Hollywood star couple Tom Holland and Zendaya holding hands in Munnar, Kerala are doing the rounds on social media.

It was rumoured that the two were in Mumbai for Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre’s opening. However, they were not spotted at the event, which saw the who’s who from the world of glamour including names such as Gigi Hadid, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Shah Rukh Khan among many others.

The official account of Kerala Tourism Saturday, shared a picture of Holland and Zendaya holding hands as they posed standing between the picturesque lush green locale of Munnar.

The photograph was captioned: “Guess who we spotted far away from home?” and had the hashtags ‘faraway home’, ‘Munnar’ and ‘Kerala tourism’.

However, many found the April Fool’s prank one of the best.

A person wrote: “Kudos to editor.”

Another said: “Nice try don’t do it again.”

“April first hits Munnar!!” said an amused user.

Some netizens tagged it as “prank” and “photoshop”.

Zendaya and Tom were pictured in Mumbai Friday. The two were photographed exiting the Mumbai airport.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Rahul Gandhi To Visit Kerala Tomorrow, Check Complete Schedule

Thiruvananthapuram: As the Lok Sabha elections draw closer, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is gearing up to intensify his campaign efforts in Kerala. The former party president, who is seeking re-election from the Wayanad constituency, will embark on a two-day visit to the state starting Tuesday, April 16.

Gandhi's itinerary includes a series of "Janasamparkam" (public outreach) programs and roadshows across various districts in Kerala. The Congress leader will kick off his campaign tour with a "Janasamparkam" event at Kodiyathur, Theyyathumkadavu in Kozhikode district, at 10:30 am on Tuesday.

Subsequently, Gandhi will proceed to Malappuram district, where he is scheduled to participate in five "Janasamparkam" events at Keezhuparamba Town, Urangattiri, Mampad, Nilambur, and Moothedam. The roadshows will cover key areas such as Pathanappuram Pallipadi, Thottikara, Janathapadi, Kuttikad, and Maruthankhal.

The Congress leader's visit to Kerala comes at a crucial juncture, with the party aiming to retain its stronghold in the state. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) had won 19 out of the 20 parliamentary seats in Kerala, with Gandhi himself securing a resounding victory in Wayanad.

High Stakes for Congress in Kerala

Kerala has traditionally been a stronghold for the Congress party, with the UDF enjoying significant support among the electorate. However, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has been making concerted efforts to make inroads into the UDF's vote base.

The BJP, which has been trying to expand its presence in the southern state, is also expected to put up a strong fight in select constituencies. Afrobeats star Davido to sue over April Fools’ article about drug arrest

Afrobeats musician Davido is seeking legal action against a media outlet that published a fake news report on April Fools’ Day claiming he had been “detained” after a “cocaine haul” was “found in his private jet.”

The article was published on April 1 by K24, a TV station in Kenya. The report falsely claimed the three-time Grammy nominee was “apprehended by the Anti-Narcotics Police Unit” on March 31 after a search of his private jet at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Kenya’s directorate of criminal investigations took to X in an effort to dispel the false allegations, branding the story “fake news.” Davido said the untrue reports had led to “a barrage of calls,” and that while he had indeed been traveling — returning from his East African tour — “I have never been arrested by anyone in any country for any crime in the world.”

The K24 report made several false, headline-grabbing claims about large amounts of cocaine being hidden on the aircraft and other allegations of illegal drug use. The news outlet updated the article later on April 1, writing in a photo caption: “This article is fictitious and only meant for April Fools’ Day. Are you fooled?” The outlet has since deleted the story.

“I want to assure my fans that these reports are entirely untrue,” Davido, who has become a global ambassador for Afrobeats and the Afropop landscape, said in a social media post Tuesday.

The 31-year-old, whose real name is David Adedeji Adeleke, called the article “extremely irresponsible” regardless of it being published on April Fools’ Day, and said he had instructed his legal team to take action.

K24 and the author of the report did not immediately return a request for comment Wednesday.

Around the world on April Fools’ Day, many including brands, companies and celebrities issue false or misleading statements in a bid to entertain the public — sometimes backfiring spectacularly in the process.

But for news organizations to get involved with April Fools’ Day by publishing fake news, at a time when interest in the media is dwindling, is a “truly bad idea,” Craig Robertson from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said in an interview Wednesday.

“Why deliberately undermine trust in your own publication by posting a fake ‘joke’ story?” he said. “It will just make people question all the other stories you posted on April 1, and perhaps all your other content in general.”

Robertson, whose focus is on news trust and credibility, noted that media outlets “have enough of a struggle trying to gain the public’s trust,” especially at a time when there is “so much public discussion around fake news and AI manipulation, as well as low public trust in news.”

Robertson said he had an “inkling” that a news outlet might “be irresponsible enough” to jump on the April 1 bandwagon, but that it was “baffling” a media organization would “post a fake story about something so serious.”

“I don’t know if there was ever a time when you could do a fake April Fools’ story responsibly, but it’s definitely not in 2024,” he said. “Implicating someone in a serious crime just isn’t funny.”
