Long-suffering tour pro hangs on for KFT win, sets himself up for another PGA Tour run

1257001384

Grayson Murray reacts salvaging a double-bogey 7 on the last hole to hang on to a one-shot win at the Korn Ferry Tour's AdventHealth Championship.

The final leaderboard at the Korn Ferry Tour’s AdventHealth Championship in Kansas City showed a one-shot victory for Grayson Murray, the first in six years for the journeyman pro. But for the 29-year-old who has battled issues with anxiety and alcohol along with physical injuries, the personal margin of victory was much greater.

“My parents have been through hell and back basically for the last six years with me fighting some mental stuff,” said the former PGA Tour winner after his triumph at Blue Hills C.C.

In the summer of 2021, following a second-round WD at the 3M Open, the Raleigh, N.C., native revealed he was in treatment for alcohol use . Murray opened up on Twitter about his battles with drinking, saying he was on probation from the PGA Tour for an incident in a hotel bar in Hawaii that year.

“It’s not easy on me, and the people around me that love me, they don’t like to see me down,” Murray said Sunday in Kansas City. “They’ve been my No. 1 supporters. There are a few friends as well that have been there, and it makes these moments a lot more special when you can share it with them.”

That moment was made extra special by the way in which Murray earned his first victory since the 2017 Barbasol Championship on the PGA Tour. In the third round at Blue Hills CC, Murray birdied the last four holes and moved within two of the 54-hole lead. Come Sunday, he birdied Nos. 1, 7 and 10 before an eagle at No. 13 and another birdie on 16 built him a three-shot lead.

Instead of cruising to victory, however, things got tight on the final hole when Murray hit his tee shot out of bounds and had to reload.

On the green, Murray stood over an eight-foot putt for double-bogey 7. He appeared a far more composed player than the one involved in a Twitter spat with Kevin Na just over a year ago, and rolled in the putt. At 19 under par, he earned a one-shot victory over Rico Hoey and 54-hole leader Wilson Furr.

Murray’s second Korn Ferry Tour title came with a $180,000 winner’s prize. The win also comes seven months after Murray was involved in a scooter accident in Bermuda that didn’t result in any broken bones but did require 50 stitches.

“It hasn’t really sunk in; I’ve been working really hard, and this is a testament to the hard work,” Murray, who now sports a leaner, muscular physique, said. “Six years is a long drought, far longer than I wanted. Sometimes your highs are high out here and your lows are low. I heard a quote, think it was from Justin Thomas, it’s like, one day you feel nothing can go wrong and you can’t lose. Then, all of sudden you lose it and you can’t make a cut. That’s kind of how golf is. It’s a very humbling sport.”

The win took Murray from No. 142 to No. 14 on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour points standings. Should he hold onto his spot in the top 30 through the end of the regular season, he’ll secure a promotion to the PGA Tour for the third time in his career having done so in 2016 and 2019.

“We’ll see,” Murray said. “I’m going to enjoy this one first.”

Miles Russell is 15. He sets Korn Ferry Tour record as the youngest player to make the cut

  • Copy Link copied

LONGWOOD, Fla. (AP) — Miles Russell became the youngest player to make the cut in the 35-year history of the Korn Ferry Tour when the 15-year-old posted a 5-under 66 Friday in the Lecom Suncoast Classic.

Russell opened with a 68 and left little doubt he would be sticking around all four days. He made a pair of eagles on the front nine, one of them on the 282-yard, par-4 fourth hole, and then began the back nine with two straight birdies.

He goes into the weekend six shots out of the lead.

Russell is a high school freshman from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, who has been taking online classes since the eighth grade.

The left-hander already is piling up some impressive credentials. He was the American Junior Golf Association player of the year in 2023, which included his seven-shot win in the Junior PGA Championship and becoming the youngest winner of the Junior Players Championship.

Last month he nearly qualified for a PGA Tour event, losing out in a playoff in a Monday qualifier for the Puerto Rico Open. The Korn Ferry Tour is the PGA Tour’s top developmental circuit.

Guan Tianlang of China remains the youngest to make the cut in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. He was 14 when he made the cut in the 2013 Masters, playing as the Asia-Pacific Amateur champion.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

The latest winner on the Korn Ferry Tour does so with a grip that, at first glance, would seem just weird.

Steven Fisk employs a classic interlock grip under the club, but on top his right thumb barely – if at all – touches the club. In fact, it covers the left thumb. His hands are clasped together around the grip like he is trying to keep it warm.

Alas, it works just fine. Fisk, who won the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club in a playoff two weeks ago, also leads the Korn Ferry Tour in Greens in Regulation so far this season.

“I’ve never changed it,” Fisk said at this week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, which he’ll enter at No. 8 on the season-long standings (the top 30 at season’s end will earn 2025 PGA TOUR membership).

“My coach and I strengthening my left hand. I’ve tried it, I just can’t get comfortable. I stay on the range and figure it out but when you get out here under the gun, it’s just different. It’s not for me.”

Fisk attended Georgia Southern University and started playing the game at age 5. His parents built and owned a par-3 course and driving range in his hometown of Stockbridge, Georgia. There he pounded balls all day and never felt his grip was “weak” or “weird.”

The first time it even registered that he was doing something different was when he was a young teenager, and a man came up to him and asked why he held the club the way he was.

“’I don’t know man,’” he remembers saying. “’I just pick it up and hold it and try to hit fades.’”

Fisk says he and his coach have talked about trying to change it and, he admits, it’s just not possible. He’d rather get good the way he is and deal with the grip he’s got.

It’s worked out OK to this point, with Fisk representing the United States at the 2019 Walker Cup before turning pro. He finished 64th on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List a year ago to retain full status for 2024.

Fisk admits he had some wrist problems around the time he turned professional after his college career finished. At that point the discussion about changing his grip was reaching a fever pitch, so he couldn’t keep getting injured.

“We were able to work around it, some of the things that put so much pressure on my left wrist, my left hand … it’s been a lot better,” Fisk said. “It’s not really something that gives me trouble anymore, so there’s no reason to change it.”

Fisk’s ball-striking chops have been on display through the early part of 2024, and he’ll look to continue his momentum from the Club Car Championship all the way to the PGA TOUR by the end of the season.

He’s mighty happy to just keep doing things the way he’s always done – because it works.

“My coach and I have done a good job on not trying to change a bunch of things and just give me a better understanding of how I swing the club and how my body moves. If someone was starting in the game, I would recommend a different grip,” Fisk said with a laugh.

“I certainly think the right way to hold a golf club is different than the way I do it, but it’s just so ingrained in me that personally I don’t think I can change. It’s one of those things where I’m going to keep doing things my way.”

PGA TOUR Digital's Elise Tallent contributed to this report.
