“We’re transported to leafy suburban American backstreets with one meandering vocal melody, and even placed in a great American forest on his reflective ode to his Philadelphia, ‘Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone)’. Nobody can transport you in quite the same way this outsider can, and the world’s a much better place for his unwavering presence.”

Kurt Vile announces UK tour for the summer

Acclaimed musician, songwriter and producer Kurt Vile and his band The Violators announces a headline tour of the UK and Europe, including an appearance at Black Deer Festival and London’s legendary Koko on Monday 12th June. The Koko show is Vile’s first headline show in London since 2019 and follows the release of his critically acclaimed ninth album (watch my moves) released on Verve Records last year.

The tour will take in eight UK cities, including Manchester and Glasgow before Vile and The Violators head into Europe for a run of shows and festivals.

(watch my moves) was named an album of the year by Uncut, MOJO and The Observer, who described the 15 track collection as “gently psychedelic tunes meandering to just the right places, where Vile’s preternatural serenity felt like a balm.”

Produced by Vile himself with Rob Schnapf, the album features special guests Chastity Belt, Cate Le Bon and percussionists Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Courtney Barnett) and Sarah Jones (Hot Chip, Harry Styles). (watch my moves) featured the singles ‘Like Exploding Stones’, ‘Hey Like A Child’, ‘Mount Airy Hill’ and ‘Flyin’ (like a fast train’).

Upcoming shows

Weeks of speculation come to an end today as details of the new Kurt Vile album can finally be confirmed: One of the most critically and commercially acclaimed artists of the last decade will release Bottle It In on October 12th on Matador Records.

Today’s announcement is accompanied by the release of a new song titled ‘Bassackwards’, which follows previously released Bottle It In single, ‘Loading Zones’, an ode to the parking challenges in Vile’s native Philadelphia, described alternately as “Vile at his comforting, shaggy best” (The Guardian), and an “ambiguous rumination on small town life” (MOJO). The epic, loping ‘Bassackwards’ is the album’s beating heart and Vile’s most compelling evocation of how he sees the world: “I was on the ground circa Planet Earth, but out of sorts,” he sings over a gently psychedelic bed of backmasked guitars. “But I snapped back, baby, just in time to jot it down.”

Vile will hit the road this fall on an extensive global tour, with support from The Violators (Rob Laakso, Kyle Spence, and Jesse Trbovich). Commencing October 12th in Hamburg, Germany, the tour runs through mainland Europe, before arriving in major UK cities, including two consecutive nights at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on November 6th and 7th.

In addition, Vile has confirmed a further run of worldwide tour dates for 2019 with The Violators. The full list of tour dates can be found below the Stephen Deusner penned bio.

Travel can inspire in surprising ways: Kurt Vile discovered as much making his first record in three years, the eclectic and electrifying Bottle It In, which he recorded at various studios around the country over two very busy years, during sessions that usually punctuated the ends of long tours or family road trips. Every song, whether it’s a concise and catchy pop composition or a sprawling guitar epic, becomes a journey unto itself, taking unexpected detours, circuitous melodic avenues, or open-highway solos. If Vile has become something of a rock guitar god—a mantle he would dismiss out of humility but also out of a desire to keep getting better, to continue absorbing new music, new sounds, new ideas—it’s due to his precise, witty playing style, which turns every riff and rhythm into points on a map and takes the scenic route from one to the next.

Using past albums as points of departure, Bottle It In heads off in new directions, pushing at the edges of the map into unexplored territory: Here be monster jams. These songs show an artist who is still evolving and growing: a songwriter who, like his hero John Prine, can make you laugh and break your heart, often in the same line, as well as a vocalist who essentially rewrites those songs whenever he sings them in his wise, laconic jive-talkin’ drawl. He revels in the minutiae of the music—not simply incorporating new instruments but emphasizing how they interact with his guitar and voice, how the glockenspiel evokes cirrocumulus clouds on “Hysteria,” how Kim Gordon’s “acoustic guitar distortion” (her term) engulfs everything at the end of “Mutinies,” how the banjo curls around his guitar lines and backing vocals from Lucius to lend a high-lonesome aura to “Come Again.”

These journeys took Vile more than two years to navigate, during which time he toured behind his breakout 2015 album b’lieve I’m goin’ down, recorded a duets album with Australian singer-songwriter-guitarist Courtney Barnett, opened for Neil Young in front of 90,000 people in Quebec, famously became a clue on Jeopardy, hung out with friends, took vacations with his wife and daughters.

In April 2017, he trekked out to Indio, California, to catch the Stagecoach Festival and sit in with his friends the Sadies (“my favorite modern band”). Inspired by Willie Nelson’s epic set, Vile spent a few days in Los Angeles working with producer Rob Schnapf at his Mant Sounds studio. The two had previously worked together on “Pretty Pimpin,” the leadoff track on b’lieve that became a number-one AAA radio hit. Their second collaboration was similarly inspired: Featuring backing vocals from Cass McCombs, the eleven-minute title track is full of ominous bass rumbles, hazy-steady drumbeats from Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, delicate harp stabs from Mary Lattimore, and what sounds like chewy distortion leaking out of a David Lynch flick.

Months later, when a lengthy Violators tour ended in Salt Lake City, Vile let the momentum carry him further west, where he recorded several more songs with engineer/producer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, the War on Drugs) at The Beer Hole in Los Angeles. Other songs were put to tape during sojourns to Portland, Oregon, and to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where fellow Violator Rob Laakso co-produced. The bulk of Bottle It In was bottled up at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, Connecticut, with Peter Katis (Interpol, the National) engineering and producing. Bottle It In captures the spontaneity of these impromptu sessions, revealing Vile as a diligent and singularly determined musician.

These recordings are the destinations, but the journeys were just as important, whether they gave him time with his wife and kids or an opportunity to get some writing done. “For a while I was terrified of flying, so I would be listening to whatever country songs I was obsessed with. I’d have George Jones blasting in my ears. Or, I would be reading something about country music. Or, I would start writing songs in that flash of being afraid, being swallowed by life. I’m up there on a plane drinking wine because like everybody else I’m afraid to die. And I wrote ‘Hysteria’ up there.” That new song, with its woozy guitar fanfare, captures mid-flight queasiness well, as Vile daydreams about escaping the flight: “Stop this plane ’cause I wanna get off,” he sings. “Pull over somewhere on the side of a cloud.”

Bottle It In is about place only insofar as it is about the people in those places: friends and family, bandmates and music heroes, colleagues and collaborators. There’s a lot of love in these big-hearted songs, a lot of warmth toward everyone in Vile’s orbit and even toward those whose paths he’s yet to cross. “Loved you all a long, long while,” he sings on “One-Trick Ponies.” “Looked down into a deep dark well, called all of your names.” The jangly country-rock tune serves as a valentine to… he won’t say, but he and Mozgawa and Farmer Dave Scher deliver a beautifully sympathetic sing-along chorus that invites every one of us one-trick ponies to join in.

As Vile prepares for another round of lengthy tours and countless shows, these songs should prove good company, reminders of the love and responsibility he has toward those he leaves at home and those he meets along the way. That makes the sentiments resonate more strongly and lends Bottle It In an emotional weight. “It’s like that moment on the airplane,” Vile says, “when you’re on your way somewhere and you have that burst of panic. When you’re terrified of dying, that’s when you want people to know you love them.”

Brit Row Tours with Constant Hitmaker Kurt Vile

UK – Following on from a spring visit to Australia and New Zealand, Kurt Vile and The Violators hit the road in the UK and Europe touring in support of the 2022 studio album, Watch My Moves.

FOH engineer Aaron Brody began working with Vile six years ago and, as of last year, has been pulling double duty as tour manager. “We’ve been with Brit Row since I started working with Kurt, when I was originally mixing monitors. He’s actually the first artist I've toured with overseas and this has given me the ability to rent a production package,” he says.

“I love working with Brit Row; the prep days in their shop are the best! It’s important to know, when you’re mixing and tour managing, that your gear is going to be right for the job. I try to be as specific as I can, down to the length of cables and I know on arrival at Brit Row that everything will be in place, exactly how I’ve asked for it.”

Out front, Brody requires a small yet perfectly defined rider, packaged with precision, thanks to Brit Row account executive Dave Compton’s expertise.

Brody continues: “I used to take a lot more outboard out with me, but over the years, I’ve really paired it back and I find that works for Kurt’s mix. I've been diving deeper into the world of snapshots because I think there's a higher value to a mix in snapshots than there is in a bunch of fancy toys. This allows my mix to translate no matter where I am in the world.

“In that sense, I'm relying more on what my desk has to offer, rather than extra elements. I'm focusing on system control and system processing, which I tend to do through the Lake LM44. I also like Rupert Neve Designs’ master buss compressor. In fact, I never leave home without that!”

The desk Brody is relying on is a recent switch to a DiGiCo SD12 with SD Rack. “I like the sound of a DiGiCo desk; it has this sort of British charm and I'm having a blast on it. It can really show you where you're at as an engineer, and I think I’ve grown into being able to use it. It’s been a positive swap for the band,” he adds.

Brody explains his mix is “good straight out of the desk”, given that they’re using house PAs across this club circuit. “I just tune the room as best I can and we run a virtual sound check every day. My favourite thing about the console is its flexible layout, and the custom banking, which works better for my workflow. The dynamic EQ on every input channel in groups is incredible, that's a real selling point for me.”

He continues: “You can't do that on other desks without the use of plug-ins, and it also helps to control the mix. The warmth and the tube emulations are pretty great if used too.”

A keen multi-instrumentalist, Vile has used a Telefunken M80 for many years, while a microphone package comprising Shure, Sennheiser, Behringer and Beyerdynamic are spread stage wide for his Violators.

Vile plays acoustic and electric guitars while singing and his four-piece live band switches between bass, keys and guitar.

Brody describes this live arrangement as “entirely different” to the records. “The albums are nothing like the live show; I asked Kurt about this early on, the way he wanted it to sound, and the aim is to be a lot more ‘in your face’, with big guitars and bigger drum sounds. I describe it as wider and more hi-fi.”

In monitor world, new crew member Erich Miller is enjoying his first outing with Brit Row.

He begins: “I live in Philadelphia, about an hour from Clair Global, so although I've known a lot of people that have worked for them, I didn’t know Brit Row personally before this tour. If a company is associated with Clair, I know that we’d be very well taken care of, and we absolutely have been.”

Miller has inherited an Avid Venue S6L, a desk he says has been a long-time preference.

“I’ve used Avid for years, so I find it definitely does whatever I want it to. The scene management is really straightforward, and as I've got to know the band and learn what they like individually, I make adjustments and save it on the fly so the next day I can recall it quickly. We multi-track the shows, and because we do virtual sound check, I can go through and make any adjustments to the scenes I need to at a later date.

“I see my job as making sure that everyone is comfortable on stage. The last thing you want to do as a monitor engineer is fish through a bunch of stuff to solve a problem. Whatever they need, I like to have it at my fingertips,” he adds.

“The whole experience has been great. On my first prep day at Brit Row, when I was in the back of the rack putting my stuff together, a freelancer named Stacey Handley came over to do it for me. By the time I could even finish my thought about what I wanted to go where, she was already pulling the connectors out and adapting the rig just as I wanted. The service is fantastic,” he confirms.

Brody closes by explaining that there's an “honesty” in the Kurt Vile camp, which has encouraged him to step into his dual roles, and to bring Miller into the fold.

“It’s just an easy-going tour,” he says. “It's not the biggest gig in the world, it's not the smallest, but management let me bring the control package I want, no questions asked. And to work with a company like Brit Row, which I totally trust to deliver it, well, there’s freedom in that.

“Ultimately, we’re all just having a good time together!”

Kurt Vile has announced Back to Moon Beach , his new EP out November 17 on Verve. To celebrate the release, Vile has shared its lead single/video, “Another good year for the roses.” In conjunction, Vile has announced 2024 North American tour dates.

Back to Moon Beach is an EP by no one’s definition but Kurt Vile’s. Clocking in at just shy of an hour, this would be a long full-length record by most any other artist’s yardstick; but for Vile, the collection is an expression of just how deep his well of non-album material runs. Following his 2022 album, (watch my moves) , Back to Moon Beach collects new songs, one-offs, covers, and newly reworked versions of beloved tracks.

It is presented in three ways: a standard vinyl release with six tracks, a digital/CD format with nine tracks, and a deluxe “direct-to-consumer” double-LP with 10 tracks (which includes the only place non-Amazon users can hear Kurt’s cover of Charli XCX’s “Constant Repeat”).

Lead single “Another good year for the roses” is Back to Moon Beach’s opening track, a richly psychedelic downtempo earworm with an instantly memorable arpeggiated piano melody. The song was co-produced by and features Cate Le Bon, and also features Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Courtney Barnett). The video features a pastoral scene of Kurt and friends in the woods, jamming out, before he joins a new band made up of actors Kevin Corrigan and Michael Shannon for a show at NYC dive Otto’s Shrunken Head.

Kurt offered a statement on the project, writing, “Hi! Here’s the opening track from my upcoming ep… ok, it’s longer than an ep… now I call it a KV comp. The first 6 tracks—which are the ones that fit on a single LP—are new to the world, with one foot in the not-too-distant past and the other with one tiny toe pointing toward the future. Together my feet are like a couple spanning time together.

“This song was started at Stinson Beach, CA in September 2019 for a few days of recording with Rob Laakso, Stella Mozgawa, Chris Cohen, Cate Le Bon (and Adam Langellotti floating as a fly on the wall as well). Adam and I being the two overseers across this entire endeavor: we finished it on our own (and with some friends along the way). We ended up demonically overdubbing for weeks straight at OKV Central, Philly (my studio)… this was all of May 2023… so many magic moments.”
