The Busiest Days to Fly Around Labor Day 2023

Labor Day may mark the unofficial end of summer in the U.S. — but it’s hardly the end of airport crowds. In fact, given record-breaking crowds already this year, there’s a good chance this Labor Day weekend could be busier than any prior Labor Day weekend.

Already this summer, U.S. airports have set fresh passenger records. June 30, the Friday before July 4, marked a new record high of passengers on a single day when more than 2.884 million people passed through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints.

That figure topped the previous record of 2.882 million people from the Sunday after 2019’s Thanksgiving, according to a NerdWallet analysis of TSA data showing the number of passengers screened at U.S. TSA checkpoints over the last four years.

Roughly 12% more people passed through U.S. airports in June 2023 versus June 2022, which is perhaps unsurprising given the lingering effects of the pandemic through 2022.

The more impressive feat, though, is that 2023’s crowds have exceeded 2019 levels. TSA screened 0.6% more passengers in June 2023 versus June 2019, proving that summer is back and bigger than ever.

Expect Labor Day 2023 crowds to be no different, but some days around the long weekend are significantly busier than others.

The best and worst days to fly Labor Day weekend

TSA checkpoint data suggests most people use Labor Day — which is observed on the first Monday of September — as a long weekend. They depart on Friday, bask in two full days of vacation and return home on Monday.

To avoid crowds, and likely save money, book Labor Day travel on days that aren’t the start and end of the weekend. Based on an average of the past four years, here were the most to least crowded days for the week surrounding Labor Day, ranked:

Friday before Labor Day (most crowded).

Thursday before.

Labor Day Monday.

Sunday after.

Friday after.

Monday after.

Monday before.

Thursday after.

Tuesday after.

Wednesday before.

Sunday before.

Saturday before.

Wednesday after.

Tuesday before.

Saturday after (least crowded).

When broken out by pre- and post-Labor Day travel, here are the three least crowded days to travel ranked from least to most crowded:

Pre-holiday:

Tuesday before (overall least crowded day pre-holiday).

Post-holiday:

Saturday after (overall least crowded day post-holiday).

During the seven days after and before Labor Day (including the holiday itself), the Friday before Labor Day has been the single busiest day to fly over each of the past four years.

As far as the period starting on Labor Day itself and spanning the subsequent seven days, Labor Day Monday has been the busiest day to fly over the past three years. If Labor Day Monday is excluded from the rankings, the Sunday after has been the busiest over the past three years. In 2019, the trends were flipped: the Sunday after was the busiest, and the holiday itself was the second busiest.

The smarter, cheaper Labor Day weekend itinerary

If you work a standard Monday-Friday workweek and have the holiday off, leaving Friday after work and returning on Labor Day seems logical. But following the same itinerary as everyone else means you’ll likely pay — both in airfares and navigating airport crowds . For lighter crowds (and perhaps better deals), try these travel days instead:

Fly on the Tuesday or Wednesday before: Let Labor Day weekend become closer to a week by jetting off earlier than the folks leaving Thursday or Friday, assuming you have enough vacation days to use (or can work remotely ). You’ll have more time away from home and be more relaxed without the big airport crowds.

Travel on Saturday: Crowds are light on Saturdays before and after the holiday. So, rather than rushing out of work on Friday afternoon to catch a flight, opt for the morning flight the next day.

That Saturday morning flight might also reduce your risk of delays , too. According to travel booking site Hopper’s Flight Disruption Outlook for Spring 2023, flights departing after 9 a.m. are twice as likely to be delayed than departures scheduled from 5-8 a.m.

Fly home the Sunday before: While most folks fly home on Labor Day Monday, you might get a head start by flying home on Sunday. Sure, you’ll have one less vacation day than folks following your same itinerary departing Monday, but that’s not a bad thing. By returning Sunday night, you’ll have a whole day to refresh and prepare for the week ahead by doing laundry, meal prepping or catching up on potential jetlag. Sometimes the nicest way to relax is by taking a vacation from your vacation.

Consider travel insurance

If you are forking out the big dollars to travel this Labor Day weekend, consider booking your trip with a card that has travel insurance or purchasing a supplementary policy from a third-party insurance provider, like Allianz or World Nomads .

Travel insurance can help you get money back for canceled or interrupted trips, or cover flight delays, lost luggage or emergency evacuation.

Read the policy, though, as many plans come to your rescue only if you experience a covered reason.

The lowdown on Labor Day 2023 travel

Quick recap: summer 2023 started off busy with record-breaking numbers of travelers on Memorial Day and July 4th , but that has since eased up. Waited out the May through July travel rush to plan your summer excursion? Your patience (or procrastination) could pay off just in time for the holiday weekend. Before you launch into planning mode, these are our top 3 things to consider ahead of LDW.

Summer travel prices have simmered.

There wasn’t a lot of money-saving happening at the beginning of the summer. Fortunately, prices for trips in the US have since cooled down, especially for flights and car rentals. According to our recent numbers, domestic airfare is 15% cheaper and daily rental car rates are 13% cheaper compared to LDW last year*. Your best bet to save is to search for flights to US hot spots or road trip to your desired destination. 

Alternatively, if you can afford to move up your trip timeline before Labor Day, you could save even more. August 18 – 20 will be the cheapest weekend to fly in the US this summer, with flights being 11% less than the rest of the summer**. International flights saw a dip too – airfare for the weekends of 8/18 and 8/25 are 18% less**.

Travelers want to get out of town… and the country.

Domestic flights are cheaper, but there’s still interest in going abroad before the summer is out. We’ve got receipts, too – our data shows that international searches for Labor Day have increased across the board. Queries for international flights are up 8%, hotels are up 25% and rental cars are up 4% compared to last year*. That’s all to say, if your sights are set on somewhere that requires a passport, give yourself extra time to account for airport traffic. Better yet, if you can hold off a few weeks, you could potentially save yourself the crowds (and money) .

Catch a deal (and some rays) down south.

We get it – going where it’s hot for the holiday weekend isn’t ideal, but hear us out. Southern destinations across the US happen to have the best flight prices for Labor Day Weekend. In fact, 4 of the 10 cheapest destinations are in the Sunshine State, so this weekend would be great for a beach trip. Whether you’re interested in getting some sun or smokey barbeque, here are the top 10 deals for US destinations:

• Orlando, Florida : flights for LDW 2023 are $210* on average.
• Fort Lauderdale, Florida : flights for LDW 2023 are $212* on average.
• Tampa, Florida : flights for LDW 2023 are $228* on average.
• Denver, Colorado : flights for LDW 2023 are $241* on average.
• Atlanta, Georgia : flights for LDW 2023 are $248* on average.
• Nashville, Tennessee : flights for LDW 2023 are $248* on average.
• Dallas, Texas : flights for LDW 2023 are $255* on average. 
• Las Vegas, Nevada : flights for LDW 2023 are $260* on average.
• Miami, Florida : flights for LDW 2023 are $264* on average.
• New Orleans, Louisiana : flights for LDW 2023 are $267* on average.

Searching for Last-Minute Labor Day Plans? Try These Travel Tools.

Pulling off one last summer getaway, even over a holiday weekend, is still possible. Here’s how.

With Labor Day weekend only days away, this hot and crowded summer is finally coming to an end — or at least, its unofficial end. But pulling off one last summer getaway, even last minute and over a holiday weekend, is still possible.

It’s important to set expectations. This may not be your cheapest vacation, nor should you count on visiting a bucket-list destination. But if you’re flexible with your itinerary, plenty of fun — and a bargain or two — can be had.

Here’s how to go about planning a down-to-the-wire trip, focusing on the apps and websites you’ll need.

Booking flights

All good travel sites provide a common search functionality from the get-go, with fields for destination, desired origin, dates of travel and number of travelers. A few very good ones have dedicated functions, and offer specific deals, for last-minute travel.

Tools like Google Flights , Skyscanner and Fareness (available only by app) allow you to search for flights from your home airport without selecting a specific destination — “Anywhere” or “Everywhere” is either a default or an option in the “To” field. Kayak also has an Explore feature: On its website, type in the departure airport, leave the arrival field at the default of “Anywhere” and then type in your specific dates. After you click Search, a map appears of possible destinations and their costs. Click on a city — say, Richmond, Va. — and flight prices, reasons to visit and other information, including public transportation advice, appear. On the app, the map appears automatically, based on the home airport set in your profile defaults.

Fareness also has an advanced date search, with flexible or fixed date choices, length of stay, day-of-the-week departure preferences and other options ($4.99 a month).

Meanwhile, Orbitz has a last-minute section , with specific searches for hotels, flights, cars, packages and things to do.

Clint Henderson, managing editor of the Points Guy , a travel website that covers airline and vacation deals, suggested investigating packages offered by major airlines, such as United Vacations and American Airlines Vacations . A recent search on American showed flight-and-hotel combinations from New York’s Kennedy International Airport to Chicago O’Hare, for a four-night stay in a four-star Loop hotel, starting at $760 per person. (Yes, you need to connect in Cincinnati, but look at that price!)

This is also a great time to consider using those credit card points or miles, Mr. Henderson said.

“Using points or miles last-minute on an expensive cash vacation is a great way to get extra value out of them,” he said.

Finding accommodations

If you found a flight but aren’t purchasing a package, you’ll most likely need a place to stay. HotelTonight is a great resource for discount hotel rooms, with the home page search defaulting to “Tonight,” though you can book 100 days out. Unlocking the Daily Drop feature, available once a day for only 15 minutes, offers further discounts — but nonrefundable rates — on a specific hotel. (Like many travel websites, HotelTonight says many of its best deals are found only on its app.)

Hot Deals is a feature on Hotwire’s hotel results page after you have entered your search specifics. Click on the Hot Deals tab, and the page shows a list of hotels with their daily rates, ratings, location and amenities, but the traveler does not see the name of the hotel until booking. All sales are final.

Hotels.com shows deals directly on its home page, showing a range of destinations but limited to the upcoming weekend. (The company offers steeper discounts to members of its free loyalty program.) It’s also worth checking Roomer , an online marketplace for verified nonrefundable hotel rooms that other travelers are looking to unload.

For budget-minded travelers, consider a camping trip. On Tentrr , where you can search by region or type of location (think lake or river), campers can get $25 off on accommodations booked through Sept. 4. Hipcamp has a dedicated Labor Day weekend section , or try your luck on ReserveAmerica and Recreation.gov , the booking site for the National Park Service and other federal lands. If you plan on camping regularly in the next year, consider signing up for the Dyrt ’s Pro Plan ($36 a year), which grants access to campsites, offline maps and discounts, or for Harvest Hosts , a membership platform that allows self-contained campers like camper vans and R.V.s to park at wineries, breweries, farms and more (from $99 a year).

Getting around

Maybe you don’t feel like rushing to grab a last-minute flight this weekend. In general, Labor Day weekend centers on domestic travel, or three-day-friendly destinations, said Katy Nastro, a travel expert with Going. And more people drive, she added, than fly.

Mr. Henderson agreed.

“You can get a taste of travel without investing in a last-minute flight or last-minute hotel,” he said. “Look at the state parks and local attractions. There are probably things you’ve never done.”

For those hitting the road, Roadtrippers can help you plan your itinerary, including where to fuel up, stay, eat and explore; the premium version allows for longer trips, R.V.-specific tools and the ability to collaborate with friends ($35.99 a year, with a free seven-day trial). Cross-reference your route with GasBuddy , which uses members to crowdsource the cheapest gas stops on your route. A Better RoutePlanner can help map out necessary charge stops for E.V. drivers, with options to customize your route based on the make and model of your vehicle, and the length and number of stops you’d like to make.

IPhone users may want to download the Roadside America app (starting at $1.99) to navigate to quirky roadside attractions, while iExit can direct you to gas, food and hotels near the Interstate highways (for $29 a year, you can opt in to iExit Rate Saver to gain access to hotel discounts).

Want to avoid driving? Take a look at Amtrak for a quick city break by train — fares from New York to Boston recently started at $111 this Friday — or a longer-distance, multistate rail journey, like the California Zephyr from Emeryville (near San Francisco) to Denver through the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains ($269 for a coach seat, $730 for a private room). Once you’ve arrived, Citymapper can help you navigate public transport, complete with maps and real-time arrivals.

And save Europe for another trip

But if you’re seeking a deal, don’t count on a last-minute trip to Europe, which has been plagued by high prices, record crowds and extreme weather all summer .

“We’re seeing the final explosion of the extraordinary demand we’ve seen all summer this Labor Day,” Mr. Henderson said. “I expect it to moderate after this weekend.”

He suggests looking for deals in places where the U.S. dollar is currently strong, including Turkey, Peru or Colombia.

“If you can find a cheap enough plane ticket to some of these international destinations, there are still, even at this late date, deals to be had,” he said.

For domestic travel, Ms. Nastro suggested urban destinations like San Francisco, Chicago or Denver. These cities stand out for decent flight and hotel prices and good weather.

“The days will be warm and the nights will be cool; you can really squeeze the last of the season out,” she said.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Most come to Minneapolis for its art, parks and diverse food scene ; many stay for the Minnesota Nice. This Labor Day weekend count up all the "have a nice days" you receive while experiencing the Midwestern metropolis’ magic.

Peruse the exhibitions at the Walker Art Center , which has a fantastic collection of 20th-century art and photography from around the world. For a slice of real Midwestern Americana, make sure to check out the Minnesota State Fair , which wraps up Labor Day weekend. It’s the largest state fair in the US by attendance.

Salt Lake City, Utah

By late August and early September, Salt Lake City is winding down from summer and patiently waiting for winter to arrive. The kids are back to school and the skis are still stowed away in attics. That means hotel rooms are discounted and hiking trails are virtually empty.

The weather has cooled from peak summer highs, and the same goes for tourists: September is generally a quieter time of year.

That means the city highlights like Pike Place Market and the Space Needle have all their Seattle delight without the crowds. Labor Day weekend also sees Bumbershoot , Seattle’s annual music and art festival – and one of the largest in the country.

Montréal, Québec

For a taste of France without the long flight and pricey airfare of going to Europe, head across the border to Montréal for the long weekend. It’s easy to get a feel for the joie de vivre in this cosmopolitan city where the first-language is French but most people speak at least some English. 

Take advantage of summer weather and the long days with patio dining all over town, especially in the atmospheric Old Port (Vieux-Port de Montréal) neighborhood, along the St. Lawrence River, where the streets are lined with cobblestones below and centuries-old architecture above. 

For a pleasant bike or stroll, check out the Lachine Canal , just outside of downtown. On hot days, you can cool off with kayak, canoe, SUP, or pedal boat rentals .

Midcoast Maine

If you haven’t quite had your fill of lobster and seaside vistas this summer, it’s time to get yourself to Maine . Start in Portland for the city’s great restaurants and breweries, plus easy access to hiking in Bradbury Mountain State Park, then continue to Midcoast Maine and its charming towns like Camden and Rockland. 

Get in a hike with incredible views of Camden Harbor from the top of Mt Battie in Camden Hills State Park , check out the Andrew Wyeth paintings at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland or stroll the 1-mile stone breakwater to the historic Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse that welcomes ships into Rockland Harbor.

New York City, New York

It’s always a good idea to go to New York City , the city you can never really finish exploring, and there are plenty of perks to visiting over Labor Day weekend. If the weather is sweltering, you can spend numerous temperature-controlled hours at the Museum of Modern Art , the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the American Museum of Natural History (the latter especially good if you have kids in tow). Broadway shows are air-conditioned, too. 

A boat ride is also a great way to catch cool breezes. There might be lines for the ferry to the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island, so consider the ferry to Staten Island or a trip on NYC Ferry 's water taxis as alternatives. If a day at the beach sounds like a good idea, there are lots of nearby options, including Brighton Beach and Coney Island , which are easily accessed on the (air-conditioned) subway.

Another perk of visiting on Labor Day weekend is that with so many locals traveling, it can be a good time to score hard-to-get restaurant reservations. If you’re looking for fun things to do on Labor Day itself, check out the huge West Indian Day parade in Brooklyn. 

The Bahamas

It’s been a time of celebration on the islands of the  Bahamas , which commemorated its 50th anniversary of independence in July. And though many of the events will be over by Labor Day, that doesn’t mean you can’t find a place to party over the long weekend. 

Head to Fish Fry (the area also known as Arawak Cay) in Nassau for some good food, drink and tunes. For a slower pace, venture to Cable Beach with its white sand and sparkling turquoise waters.    

Admittedly, September is hurricane season, so keep an eye on weather reports and make sure your travel insurance includes a policy that includes cancellations due to extreme weather.

Our favorite TV for most people is the TCL Q6 ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ) which is already a great TV for a good price before the current sale. The only downside is it comes with Google TV, which is still a good interface, but we like Roku a little bit more. 

Another one of our favorite TVs , the Samsung S95C QD-OLED ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is the best TV to buy if you need a really big TV. It starts at 55 inches and runs up to 83 inches (the sale applies throughout the sizes ). It's great for wide viewing angles and well-lit rooms, plus it's OLED!

Samsung's QN90B ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is actually pricier than normal for most of its sizes. However, the 43-inch model is seeing an excellent price drop. It's a great option if your budget is tight or if you want a smaller TV for a bedroom or guest room. It's super bright, making it a great choice for rooms with a lot of natural light that might wash out other TVs, and has excellent contrast. It's easy to set up too and has all the apps you could hope for.

Allform 3-Seat Sofa

The Allform 3-Seat Sofa is featured in our Best Couches guide . It has great stain resistance and holds up well over time, and the modular design can be configured to suit your living space. I'm also a fan of the color selection—the Amber fabric in particular is so good.

The Nomad Sectional Sofa is a favorite from our Best Couches guide for how fast and easy it is to assemble compared to other delivered couches.

Luna Weighted Blanket

This blanket hasn't made it into a guide just yet, but WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe loves it. True to its name, it's massive, measuring 10 feet by 10 feet, so it's really easy to share—even if you're a blanket hog like myself. This deal matches the price we saw for the company's concurrent sale during Prime Day, and it's part of a discount on almost the entire lineup . 

WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano is currently in the process of testing this human-sized dog bed, and believe me when I say that the rest of the Gear desk is very jealous. Just look at it! It's a dog bed, but for a person! It comes in a variety of fluffy, soft styles, and it promises the best nap of your life. The orthopedic foam base measures 68 by 33, and the cover is also machine-washable in case you, too, must munch on Hot Cheetos before napping. 

The Hoover OnePwr is a great vacuum, and it used to be our top pick in our Best Cordless Vacuums guide . A big upside is that it stands like a corded vacuum would and has a large 1-liter dust bin. The battery isn't the best, lasting 35 minutes on the low suction setting, but you can get a larger-capacity battery if you need more juice.

It's slim and lightweight but still has a bigger, brighter display, a large trackpad, 1080p webcam, an excellent six-speaker system, and good battery life. We prefer the 15-inch model over the 13-inch, and now it's on sale for the 13-inch price.

The 8.3-inch iPad Mini ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is two years old, and it drops to this price fairly often, but it's one of the best small tablets you can buy. It supports the second-gen Apple Pencil , which you can magnetically attach to the edge of the tablet to recharge. 

This is the first major discount we're seeing on the OnePlus Pad ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ). If you've been itching to buy a tablet (one that's not an iPad ), then this is one of the best you can get at the moment , especially at this price. Performance is pretty good, the screen is sharp and fluid, and the battery life is great. This deal comes with a stylus, but you'll need to purchase the OnePlus keyboard cover separately if you want to do some work on it.

Samsung Galaxy S23+

Samsung's Galaxy S23+ ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) is the middle child of the current lineup from the company, and one we usually shy away from recommending. It's not as good value as the S23, but it's not as high-tech as the S23 Ultra (also on sale for $1,000 ). but it's a great buy at this price. You get a big screen and a beefy battery, plus all the other top-end features in the range.

The OnePlus 11 ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ) fades away to the background when compared to many of its Android peers , but it's still a pretty darn good smartphone, especially at this price. It has the fastest charging speed you'll find on this side of the Atlantic—we managed to take it from 8 to 95 percent in just 22 minutes. Performance is fast too and it has long software support. But there‘s no wireless charging, and you’re getting only IP64 water resistance and a software interface that isn't our favorite. 

This phone ( 6/10, WIRED Review ) works on all major US carriers and will get three years of security updates, which is remarkable at this discounted price . Performance is decent, you get two-day battery life, and a nice 120-Hz screen. However, the cameras are quite middling, and it will only get one OS update.

Insta360 One RS. 

We recommend a few different Insta360 cameras . Most of them are on sale right now. A highlight is the Insta360 One RS , which is down to $240 ($60 off) or $411 for the Twin Edition—a discount of just under $140. Our full review has more details, but suffice it to say that this camera offers the best of both worlds when it comes to action cam footage and the option for 360-degree perspectives. Some work for charging and data transfer. Some work slowly. And some are just plain poor. Data transfer is limited to 480 Mbps, which makes it better at charging than transferring large batches of files.

NZXT Function

The NZXT Function ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is a great place to start if you want to enter the world of mechanical keyboards but feel apprehensive. It's quite customizable and comes with an array of tools to help you swap pieces out. It has a volume wheel on the left side, RGB LEDs, and software to remap the buttons and create macros. You can 

The Apex Pro is plenty colorful, has mechanical switches that can be customized per key, and has a nifty LED display so you can see system alerts, the volume, and more in the company's included software. 

This compact mechanical keyboard is excellent. WIRED reviews editor Julian Chokkattu has been using it for more than a year with zero issues. The battery lasts a long time (especially if you turn off the backlit keys), but you can recharge it via USB-C. This model has linear switches, but you can choose tactile and clicky, though they don't have as good discounts. 

Char-Broil Gas2Coal 3-Burner Hybrid

Can't decide between charcoal and gas ? This hybrid grill lets you have both. Seriously—it has a mode that lets you switch between the two. There's a side burner for heating up side dishes too. It's the best of all worlds. Read more in our Best Grills guide .

Sur La Table sells several items we recommend , including products that don't go on sale very often. One such example is the Le Creuset Bread Oven ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ), which is down to $240 ($50 off) in select colors. A bunch of All-Clad items are also featured in the sale. 

Full disclosure: WIRED writer Joe Ray absolutely hated the original Our Place Always Pan ( 3/10, WIRED Review ). But the company revamped it and released the Always Pan 2.0 , which reviewer Louryn Strampe owns and absolutely adores. The new version of the pan has an improved nontoxic nonstick coating and outer surface, more sustainable construction, and it's oven-safe. She likes the sloped edges and the pan's overall design, which allows for many different cooking functions. There's even a spoon holder built into the pan's handle. The Always Pan 2.0 is on sale for $123 ($42 off), and other items from Our Place are on sale here .

Fellow Opus 

The Fellow Opus is our favorite coffee grinder ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) and it's one of the quietest too. The hopper has a smaller capacity, but you get versatile grind settings for all kinds of coffee, and the quality of the grind is excellent, considering its price. If you're a pour-over fan, the Fellow Ode Brew Grinder is also on sale for $169 ($30 off) .

The super-sleek electric kettle makes heating water look really good. The Fellow Stagg EKG Kettle ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) has a gooseneck designed for pour-over coffee lovers, but WIRED reviewer Jaina Grey recommends it for anyone, even if you rarely brew coffee. The precise temperature controls can make it a great choice for coffee and tea lovers alike.

Breville Bambino

One of our favorite espresso machines , the Breville Bambino is great for cramped countertops and small spaces—and right now, for smaller budgets, too. The no-frills machine is a similar size to two cereal boxes side by side but still packs nice brewing power.

Want to grind beans for very little money? One of the cheapest ways to do it is manually, and we like Hario's Skerton Pro hand grinder for the task. It takes less than two minutes to grind out a half cup of coffee, and the grind is consistent. It's not what you'll want to use for French press brewing though.  

Patagonia Nano Puff

This sale has a big ol' selection featuring discounted apparel, bags, and other gear. We've recommended the Nano Puff Hoody ($85 off) and Nano Puff Jacket ($92 off) many times. Sizing is limited, and only certain colors are on sale, so be quick if you want the best selection. 

The two-person capacity is a stretch—you're only going to fit two folks in the tent if you don't mind snuggling up closely, and without keeping your packs inside at night. But the Half Dome SL 2+ is one of our favorite tents because of its ruggedness and the ease with which you can set it up. This deal is on the two-person model, but the three-person is also on sale for $265 ($114 off) . This deal includes the footprint, which will help protect the tent floor on rough terrain.

It took a while, but as WIRED reviews editor Julian Chokkattu says in his review of the Galaxy Watch5 ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ), Samsung's line of smartwatches has finally started to rival the Apple Watch. Battery life for the Pro lasts for two days, which isn't fantastic compared to Garmin trackers, but the fitness and sleep tracking functionalities are spot on, and the sapphire crystal glass is a premium, scratch-resistant feature. This is last year's model, but it's still being supported with new features. Check out the Galaxy Watch6 for the latest.

Niu KQi3 Pro 

Our favorite electric scooter is back down to its typical sale price. It's 45 pounds but it's easy to grasp the stem and carry up and down a flight of stairs. It can go up to 20 miles per hour, and most people will be able to get close to 20 miles on it if not more (depending on rider weight and terrain). The similar KQi3 Max ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ) is also on sale for $849 ($150 off) but adds a smidge more power and a little more range. Read more in our Best Electric Scooters guide . 

We haven't tested the models that are on sale, but we're in the process of reviewing one from Juiced, and we like it so far (we have tested Juiced ebikes in the past and liked them ). Solo Stove Yukon.

We haven't reviewed the newer version that is on sale, but we like the original Solo Stove Yukon ( 7/10, WIRED Review ), and other Solo Stove gear. The brand's fire pits are reliable and durable, and all of them are on sale right now. The Bonfire is a smaller size for backyards, the Ranger is designed to be portable , and the Mesa is meant for tabletops . 

This Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag ranks high in our upcoming sleeping bag guide. Goose-down-filled bags are only growing more expensive, but the value offered by this 650-fill-down bag is too good to overlook. It weighs only 2 pounds, 5 ounces, and the DWR finish means the down will resist damp air better than untreated down. The women's cut is on sale for $229 ($76 off) , as well as the warmer, zero-degree version , which we haven't tested.

While it’s not technically a Labor Day sale, we'd be remiss if we didn't include this offer from Backcountry, which takes up to 60 percent off a huge array of outdoor gear. We're currently in the process of testing the Stoic Basecamp Bivy Quilt Double Outdoor Blanket , which is on sale for $40 ($34 off). It's super soft and measures 84 x 84 inches—big enough for five grown adults to stretch out, put their heads together, and stargaze in a pile. 

Google Nest Hub Max

The Google Nest Hub Max ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is our favorite smart display for several reasons, like the large 10-inch screen, the robust speakers, and Google Assistant remains one of the better voice assistants out there. Walmart has it on sale for the biggest discount, but you can also find it on sale at Target and Best Buy for a smaller (but still solid) discount.

If you prefer Alexa as your smart home assistant, the Echo Show 8 is the best smart display for you. It hits the sweet Goldilocks spot of the range of Echo Show displays; not too big of a screen, and not too small. It's big enough to read recipes and have solid sound, but small enough to fit on countertops comfortably or side tables. If you'd rather get the smaller Echo Show 5 , that's on sale too right now.

If your kid wants to talk to Alexa, the Echo Dot Kids is the smart speaker for them. This special version has parental controls and a year of Amazon Kids+ , which includes thousands of Audible books and special features and content designed for kids. (Amazon Kids+ will be $3 a month after that first year, though.) And there are two cute designs to choose from, owl or dragon.

The latest Echo Dot is a solid little smart speaker. We prefer the clock version, but if you aren't interested in having a bright LED clock on the side of your smart speaker, this clock-free version is on sale now.

These smart light strips are easy to set up and are already a great price. There's a simple control box for power, color cycling, and music mode, while the app gives you oodles more options to give into scheduling, scenes, and more. Sonos Move.

The Sonos Move ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) doesn't drop this low in price very frequently. It has excellent sound quality, and both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are baked right in for voice control. Even on sale, it's still expensive, and we wish it had better water resistance. The Roku Streambar is the Best Soundbar for small spaces. It combines the streaming capabilities of a Roku device with the life-changing qualities of a soundbar . Sometimes combination products are just okay, but we like the Streambar—especially at this price, which is $10 lower than we usually see during sales events. The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

What identification do you need to prove that you're a veteran?

If you’re an active duty military member, reservist member of the National Guard or military retiree, the easiest way to access Veterans Day discounts is to use your military ID card.

For veterans who receive Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health benefits, the VA benefits photo ID card should serve as easy proof of veteran status at most businesses.

If you don’t have a VA benefits card, the VA can provide you with a Veterans ID Card. Rolled-out in 2017, the Veterans ID Card program allows all honorably discharged veterans to apply for online and receive by mail a card meant to function as proof of service. Some states include veteran status on their state ID cards and drivers licenses, offering another ID card option for veterans looking to show businesses proof that they served.

2023 Veterans Day deals: Free meals and discounts at more than 70 restaurants, businesses

For Veterans Day , restaurants and businesses across the U.S. are recognizing the sacrifice of veterans and active-duty military personnel with free meals, deals and discounts.

The federal holiday, which is Saturday, is held on Nov. 11 to mark the end of World War I when the Allies and Germany signed an armistice agreement on Nov. 11, 1918 – fighting ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

But the date itself is meant to honor all those who served in the military, those who are living and those who have died.

Many of these deals are for Saturday, but some are good on Friday, and others over the weekend. Most discounts require proof of service, such as a form of veteran, military or military-dependent identification. Many offers are limited to dine-in guests as well. Always check with your closest location to confirm participation.

Office Depot and OfficeMax: 25% discount

From Saturday to Monday, veterans and active-duty and retired military personnel, reservists, and their dependents get 25% off qualifying regular and sale-priced purchases at Office Depot and OfficeMax . (Other terms include not combinable with other discounts such as Rewards Member or Business Select Member pricing.)Throughout the year, Office Depot and OfficeMax also give veterans 20% in-store discount on qualifying regularly-priced purchases.

Pilot Flying J: $12 meal deal

Pilot Flying J travel centers are giving all service members and their families verified through ID.me in the myRewards Plus app a free meal credit valued up to $12. The offer can be claimed Friday to Sunday through the app and redeemed at participating Pilot, Flying J and One9 Fuel Network travel centers. Options include hot and cold deli items, meals at participating on-site restaurants, snacks, fountain drinks, and Pilot coffee.

Dunkin' Veterans Day: Free doughnuts

Lowe's Veterans Day: Collectible pins

On Saturday, Lowe’s will offer a free collectible pin to the first 150 veteran customers at each store.

Lowe's gives a 10% military discount to active-duty and veteran military service members and their families every day on eligible purchases, with no annual limit. The home improvement chain also has dedicated parking spots for veterans at each store. 

Buffalo Wild Wings: Free boneless wings

Golden Corral: Military Appreciation Night

Customers can round up their in-store purchases at their local Casey’s and proceeds will go to Hope For The Warriors and Children of Fallen Patriots . Hard Rock Cafe is giving all active and retired military members with valid ID a free Legendary Burger on Saturday (for dine-in only). The offer can also be redeemed with Hard Rock Cafe’s year-round 15% military discount when dining in.

Sugarfire Smokehouse: Free cheeseburger deal

Sugarfire Smokehouse will give all active and retired-members of the armed forces a “Boots on the Ground Special,” a free cheeseburger special on Saturday.

Veterans and active-duty military can also get 50% off the restaurants' Pork Steak Special, (original price, $12.99). Sugarfire will donate a portion of the proceeds to the non-profit Honor Flight Network which flies U.S. veterans, including those who served in Korea, to the memorials in Washington, D.C. at no charge.

Texas Roadhouse: Free lunch

Texas Roadhouse will give veterans and active military free lunch on Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Free lunch can be chosen from one of 10 meals including a 6-ounce sirloin with two side dishes, and any Coca-Cola product, sweet tea/iced tea, or coffee. Lion's Choice: Free sandwich deal

St. Louis-based Lion's Choice will give active and retired members of the armed forces a free original roast beef sandwich on Saturday. (Customers just state they are a veteran or show a valid ID.) Also, Lion’s Choice has a 20% heroes discount all year long for veterans and active-duty military.

Hooters: Free dinner entrée

Veterans and active-duty military who present proof of service or a military ID on Veterans Day get a free dinner entrée from Hooters' Veterans Day Menu with purchase of a beverage (dine-in only at participating locations). The Hooters Veterans Day Menu includes 10-Piece Boneless Wings, Hooters Burger, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and Buffalo Chicken Salad.

Sleep Number: 20% off discount

Sleep Number is giving military and veterans a 20% off discount on most Sleep Number smart beds, bases, furniture, and bedding. Just go to the Sleep Number website for the discount.

Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers: Free meal

All veterans and active military personnel who visit Freddy’s on Veterans Day will get a meal card for a free Freddy’s Original Double with Cheese combo. (No purchase is necessary; cards may be redeemed through Nov. 30, 2023.)

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store: Free cake

Veterans get a free slice of Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola Cake with an in-store purchase on Saturday at Cracker Barrel . Also, customers can get 25% off U.S. military-themed products, in stores and online .

Sheetz: Free sandwich and car wash

At Sheetz's 700-plus locations, all veterans and active-duty military can get a free half turkey sub and a regular size fountain drink on Saturday. Veterans and military personnel can also get a free $9 car wash at Sheetz stores with a car wash.

Sheetz customers can donate their loyalty points in November towards the company's donation of $50,000 to the USO. Two hundred loyalty points donated will equate to a $1 donation via the Sheetz app .

bb.q Chicken: 25% discount

Korean fried chicken franchise  bb.q Chicken , which has 160 locations in the U.S., is taking 25% off all orders placed by veterans and active-duty military in-store on Saturday (offer good at at participating U.S. locations).

The company is also donating a portion of Veterans Day sales to the Honor Flight Network .

Twin Peaks: Free lunch deal

Twin Peaks , with more than 105 locations, will be giving veterans a free lunch on Veterans Day. Metro Diner: 50% off discount

Metro Diner is offering 50% off to active and retired military with valid military ID on Veterans Day. The restaurant offers 10% off meals year-round. 

Red Robin: Free burger deal

Red Robin is giving veterans and active military personnel who dine-in at participating Red Robin locations on Saturday a free Red’s Big Tavern Burger and Bottomless Steak Fries (not valid for online or to-go orders, must show proof of service).

Veterans and active military members – and their parents and spouses – can sign up for Red Robin’s military rewards program for special offers all year long.

Carrabba's Italian Grill: Free appetizer or dessert

Carrabba’s Italian Grill is giving veterans and active-duty military a free dine-in appetizer or dessert and a beverage with a show of ID (available all day, no purchase required). Bad Daddy’s will give all active and retired military personnel a free All American Burger with a small side of fries, chips or tots from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday (guests must show ID to redeem the offer).

Maverik's: Free coffee deal

Maverik –Adventure’s First Stop convenience store chain with 400 locations in 12 western states will give free coffee to veterans and active-duty military all day (up to a large coffee with valid military ID).

Red Lobster: Shrimp dinner deal

On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time, Red Lobster will give all veterans, active-duty military and reservists a meal voucher for a Veterans Shrimp & Chips dinner – six hand-breaded, butterflied and lightly fried shrimp, french fries and coleslaw – to be redeemed from Monday, Nov. 13, to Sunday, Dec. 10 for dine-in only. Tractor Supply: 15% discount

On Saturday, Tractor Supply is offering a 15% discount for all service members, veterans and their dependents.

TRX: 20% discount

TRX will give anyone with a military ID an additional 20% off all purchases through Wednesday, Nov. 15. (You get 10% off your first order if you sign up for email alerts, too.) Also, TRX will match those purchases with a 1:1 product donation to the Navy Seal Foundation .

Caribou Coffee: Free coffee

Caribou Coffee  is giving veterans, active-duty military members and spouses with military ID a free small hot brewed or cold press coffee (excluding nitro) on Saturday.

Free Rein Coffee: Donations to veterans

Free Rein Coffee Company , co-founded by actor Cole Hauser ("Yellowstone"), will donate a bag of coffee to veterans through the Wounded Warrior Project  for every order on Friday and Saturday.

Black Rifle Coffee Company: Free coffee and 20% discount on merch

Participating Black Rifle Coffee Company stores will give a free 16-ounce coffee to veterans on Saturday. And through Monday, shoppers can get 20% off retail merchandise; veterans get an additional 10% off in participating stores and online.

Call of Duty: New add-on pack benefits veterans

The Call of Duty Endowment (C.O.D.E.) Warrior Pack ($9.99; for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Call of Duty: Warzone video games) includes a variety of skins, blueprints, and other in-game items. 100% of the proceeds from the pack – it was inspired by and created in close collaboration with Ben, a decorated retired Navy SEAL – goes to the endowment to help veterans find post-military careers.
