Lifted luxury: inside the dps 6-door 2016 ford excursion build.
There are just some rides you can’t walk past without doing a double, or even triple-take. Diesel Performance Specialties (DPS) has built just such a vehicle by seamlessly mating a 6.7L King Ranch truck and a Ford Excursion SUV. With an insane 20 inches of lift, six doors, and wild amounts of chrome and powder coating, this 2016 “Excursion” is a truck like no other. But the question remains, how did they build it? It all started with two bare cabs and an idea. Shop owner Trevor Lima and the team at DPS wanted to build a flagship of a shop truck, but they didn’t want to build something cookie cutter. So the idea came about to build the SUV Ford didn’t–a 2016 take on a Ford excursion. Thus begun a project that was under the knife for over a full year.
Ford Excursions were built with 6.0L and 7.3L engines, neither of which were known to be powerhouses in stock form. Since DPS wanted to retain reliability and 100 percent emissions legality, they chose a newer ‘16 Ford with the 440 hp and 860 lb-ft 6.7L engine as a starting platform. From there, it was a complete custom build. Two frames were selected and then integrated into one, while also incorporating a drop frame that would allow for a huge lift. The body was also heavily modified (obviously) for the six-door setup, but the team also took the extra step of installing modern radiused rear fenders to compliment the setup up front. Virtually all of the bodywork was done in-house by DPS, including the fabrication of both front and rear bumpers.
Even with the skeleton of the truck finished (body and frame) there was still a ton of work left. Trevor was determined to have a drivable truck as well as a show truck, so they made lots of unseen changes, like re-gearing the front and rear axles with 4.88 gears, to help get the 11,000 pound ride moving. As the build went along, anything that wasn’t already painted white was either powder coated or chromed, including the entire underside of the truck. This meant the frame, axles, and suspension links would all become works of art, in addition to the custom crossover steering with PSC hydraulic assist.
Other than the body modifications, the bulk of the work definitely went into creating the wild 20 inches of lift that firmly sets the truck into the sky. Gone are the factory leaf springs, and instead the Excursion rides on Fox Racing coil-over shocks all the way around, that have a mammoth 14 inches of travel. The front Dana 60 axle and rear Sterling 10.5 are both hung by wildly unique rectangular 4-link suspension arms, that are also powder coated and chrome-plated. AMP Research Powersteps were also added so that passengers could actually climb into the Ford, and braided stainless brake lines were used because of the suspension’s immense travel.
After working hard on the Excursion for more than a year, it was finally finished. Is it an over-the-top show truck? Yes, but it’s also functional, and can seat a whole baseball team. Its stance is also something that’s immediately noticed, as the lift is nearly double the height that’s available in the regular aftermarket. For Trevor and DPS (who now builds show trucks out of Weatherford, Texas) it’s the perfect calling card, and quite a statement.

Best Ford Excursion Upgrades
Tuning has always been treated differently. It went through the era of unsuitable for civilian use racing cars, and then by the advent of decor and electronics and the most popular tuning became factory tuning. But the factory versions of cars are far from being the best, and on the contrary – for everyone and for no one. And to make the car comfortable, but not defiant, it is enough to pump a little electronics and appearance in it. So today I will tell you in detail how to improve your Ford!
Legal Improvements
Some want to make the car more powerful and passable, others improve it for external gloss. But not every modification can be legalized. Red headlights or tires that don’t match the car’s model will make the car inoperable. The automobile tuning rules, approved by the government, should simplify the registration and make it more understandable.
Changing the Original Head Unit
Replacement of the original head unit is the most obvious way to turn an aging car into a modern one. First of all, OEM head units are very sad in the number of functions and are far behind on the technical side from what we see in smartphones and tablets. Second, they usually don’t get updates as often, unlike third-party multimedia devices, which are updated “over the air.”
It’s not just a tablet that can play music/video or not play, run apps or not run – the system remembers your music preferences, the routes of your daily movements, can pave the way on the command “Let’s go home”, and also on the road tells the news that is interesting to you personally voice Alice if you ask her for it.
Music Instead of Alarms
We all know by heart the standard alarm sound. Technology is technology, but the sound of manipulating the car is still the most popular way to scare off car thieves. Today, instead of the standard sound you can put any melody or even record your own call or sounds that will accurately identify your car against the background of others. For this purpose, the alarm is paired with a siren, which allows you to replace the standard sound signal with any melody.
The car shock absorber or so-called “amort” – a special device in the suspension of the car, the purpose of which is, the reduction of mechanical vibrations (damping) in motion or complete absorption. Shocks for Ford Excursion provide a soft and smooth ride of the car, as well as protect elements of the running machine from loads arising from the movement on the uneven surface of the roadway. Automotive shock absorbers are used as part of the elastic elements in the vehicle suspension together with springs, torsions, and springs.
All-Around Visibility
What distinguishes an experienced driver from a novice driver? An experienced driver can park without problems, guided only by the mirrors. What distinguishes a professional from an experienced driver? A professional will be able to park in places that require perfect clarity and attention.
To practice parking skills, modern cars are equipped with rear-view cameras, but you can go further and install a third-party circular viewing system in the car, which will allow you to see the car in any projection, including from above while staying inside the cabin or even at home. The image is transmitted to your smartphone and allows you to see everything that is going on with the car at any time online.
Cold Air Intake is a part of the power supply system of vehicles with internal combustion engines; pipes of various shapes, cross-sections, and designs for air intake and its directed delivery to the air filter and further to the carburetor or throttle assembly.
The air intake has several functions:
- Atmospheric (cold) air intake to feed the engine;
- Warm air intake to power the engine during cold start and warm-up (mainly in cold weather);
- Directional air supply to the filter regardless of its location (this allows for convenient placement of the filter and other parts of the power system);
- Some types of air intakes – protecting the engine power system from water and dirt;
- In some cars and tuning – serving as a decorative element.
Automatic Tinting
It is also possible to improve the appearance of the car with the help of tinting. Modern tinting has nothing in common with films from the 1990s, moreover, its transparency can be controlled. The secret is that instead of regular glasses, you may install electrochromic double glasses, the external and internal surfaces of which are covered with athermal armor film, and there is a polymer inside the glasses.
It is the polymer that allows you to adjust the tinting and light transmission. Tinting is controlled by a button or regulator, allowing you to smoothly change the degree of tinting. Such glass is made to order, and installation and production are handled by special companies.
Wireless Disc Illumination
If you want to make your car a little more pretty, but not turn it into a glowing mountain like a truck from a Coca-Cola New Year commercial, there is a way out. Not everything is easy, of course, because some kinds of lights will attract not only the attention of pedestrians or other motorists but also the traffic police. And all because usually to install the lights you need to rearrange almost the entire body of the car, and such interference will no longer be particularly legal.
To help comes to the technology of wireless LED-lighting, which is easily mounted to the discs of the car. During the day it is charged by sunlight, and in the evening it glows in different colors – you can choose one-color or multi-color backlighting. The main thing is not to overdo it, so as not to spoil the appearance of the car.
Active Noise Reduction
Many motorists are quite satisfied with the sound of regular acoustic systems, but for a true audiophile, the replacement of car audio is one of the main ways to make your car personal and unique.
If you are not so enthusiastic about music in order to change the upholstery and add a layer of sound insulation, and then change the speakers, you can do with replacing the original sound system and using the technology of active noise reduction with the help of accelerometers and microphones. The first detects vibrations, and the second – sound waves, after which a special processor processes this information, and the system produces a compensating signal.
Suspension Lift
One of the best methods of improving the off-road qualities of any car is considered a Lift Kit for Ford Excursion. In this situation, not only the body is lifted above the ground, but also the frame and the units installed on it so that the geometric cross-country capability of the off-road vehicle is significantly improved.
Suspension lift comes in several ways. To a large extent, the suspension lift depends on the design of the vehicle, as well as how many centimeters or inches lifted the suspension. The basis of all these methods is the replacement of the elastic suspension components. Long springs are installed. If the suspension is a leaf spring, between the leaf spring and the frame is installed spacers or lengthened wishbones, or leaves are added to the leaf springs.
If the suspension lift is significant, the center of gravity increases significantly, which negatively affects the controllability of the car, resulting in an increased risk of overturning. Particular attention should be paid to how the driveshafts function. The fact is that driveshafts have their own limit angle at which they can operate, and the wear on the shafts will be the greater the closer the angle is to the limit. More often than not, the greatest wear is at the face joint of the driveshafts.
Thus, the average car produced by any well-known automobile company usually meets the needs of buyers. However, in some cases, vehicle owners want to give their “iron horse” a more individual character and stylish appearance. In such cases, craftsmen who can perform high-quality tuning of the vehicle come to the rescue. With the help of competent tuning can improve the aerodynamic properties of cars, create a more spectacular facade, improve the performance of the engine, and more. So, I also hope that this article was useful for you and you can easily improve your Ford Excursion.

Excursion lift advice
- Add to quote
The wife and I have been talking about lifting her Excursion since we got it a little over a year ago. Looks like it will be happening after the first of the year, we should be getting a nice income tax return, and it's going to lift and tires for the Ex. I'd like to get a 4-5" lift, and clear 315/75/16's on the stock wheels. My guess, based on experiance with my red truck, is that the tires will hit the back edge of the front bumper first, then the inner fender at the back of the front wheel opening, if they hit at all. (I am currently running 35's on aftermarket 16.5x10" wheels on the red truck, with only adding a leaf to the stock front springs to level it out.) So in the past few days I've been searching on the web, and made a few phone calls... there is a Pro-Comp 4" kit that includes shocks, but according to the details listed, it will only clear 33's, not the 35's/315's I want to run. Would I be correct in thinking that it will likely clear the 35's, as long as I'm willing to trim the front bumper? What lifts have you used, and how pleased are you with them? Sagging issues? Fitment issues? Parts not included? Other things that made the install or use more difficult? Any feedback you have... is welcome!
You NEED to talk to Cary at CT Performance. There isn't ANYONE out there as far as I'm concerned that knows more about our Excursion's then he does. Most places just take a suspension kit tuned for the pickups and slap it on the Excursion's. Email is [email protected]
Thanks for the advice... I was planning to do that anyway, and did so earlier today, just after I read your post. Cary does seem to know what he's talking about, and is interested in makeing sure your truck handles as good as possible, which I respect. However... I'm still interested in any other feed back from thoes with first hand experiance with lifted Excursions. How does it ride? How did the handling change? Anything else?
I like what you're saying, dieselcrawler. I too, would like to know about a 4" lift for my Ex. I know it's somewhat general knowledge that Cary knows a lot about lifting and Ex and making it handle. I already have a Hellwig bar on the way for the rear, have a pair of V codes in the floor in the garage, and am well on my way to collecting all of the same type/similar parts to do a CT Performance style lift. SURELY though there is a less expensive alternative for shocks than the Bilsteins. Especially since I have read more than once that they have a tendency to leak. I mean why can't a guy buy a set of Monroes, or Gabriels, or ProComps or whatever for less money and accomplish the same thing? I would doubt that the average guy like myself would be able to tell the difference between a $400 (or close to it) set of Bilsteins VS a set of over the counter, auto parts store HD shocks. I'm definitely no expert. Just a family man on a budget that wants to lift his Ex.
I will say that Cary DOES know his stuff... as a self-employed small business owner for the past 11 years, his thought process is much the same as mine, in wanting to make sure he provides the best advice and best quality end-product possible. He e-mailed me about 2 pages worth of a discription of how to best lift the Excursion, what parts to use, and how to do it, what to modify, etc. Very informative. He wants to make sure that not only does the Excursion get lifted properly, the ride quality remains the same or better, and the handling improves, not gets worse. And after talking to him, I'm sure he's right in what he says, he knows his stuff. Myself, I'm like you, Rahn; talking to Cary was very useful, but I don't know if I can afford to go all-out... and will likely have to make some compromises in one or more areas. I'm going to look into the rear sway bar issue, will likely make do with some cheaper shocks and maybe lift springs, but I do understand that the valving can make a diffrence in ride quality, as can the choice in springs. One thing I do recall from talking to Cary was his recomendation to get larger diamiter wheels, to make sure that the tires are not intoducing any addional 'squrreliness' into the mix, the stock wheels are narrow, and with taller sidewalls on a narrow wheel, the tires will squirm in turns, driving can become like trying to heard a dozen cats down the road... all over the place!
My 02 ex has a pro comp 4" lift. I am running 35x12.50x20 bmf wheels. I actually rubbed the bumper and the spring at first. Took an air saw to the air dam and notched it and fixed that til my wife t boned a jetta. Then the bumper rubbed again til my new bumper. I also have a f350 rear sway bar. The only thing left is a dual steering stabilizer but i have been putting money elsewhere in the truck so thats waiting. Originally had done the 6" first but needed a driveshaft and went to the 4". Just my take anyway.
