30+ Best Things to Do in Vero Beach, FL (From a Local)

Get ready to discover the 30+ best things to do in Vero Beach, FL – all recommended by a local. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or want to soak up the charm of our town, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in and maximize your time here in our little paradise. But first, a foreword.

toddler-overlooking-beach-from-boardwalk

Introduction to Vero Beach

Welcome to Vero Beach, Florida! Whether you’re here for a specific reason or simply looking for a stunning and underrated destination on the East Coast, you’re in for a treat. Our town may be lesser commercialized, but it’s undoubtedly one of the prettiest places you’ll ever visit.

scarlett-at-splash-pad-best-things-to-do-in-vero-beach

As proud residents of this little slice of paradise, we love sharing our home with friends and tourists. And we’re thrilled to provide you with the ultimate guide to experiencing the best of Vero Beach, straight from a local’s perspective.

Nestled on the Atlantic Coast in Central East Florida, Vero Beach is part of the renowned Treasure Coast. Known for its beautiful beaches and historic Dodgers’ spring training facility, Vero Beach holds a special spot in our hearts.

Moving to Vero Beach, conveniently located halfway between Melbourne and West Palm Beach, has been a decision we’ve never regretted. Whenever we describe where we live to those who aren’t familiar, we mention our coordinates in Vero Beach.

1. Heavenly Beaches

The obvious choice for the best things to do in Vero Beach would be to visit its 22 miles of pristine and beautiful beaches along Florida’s Treasure Coast. Vero is known as the “gateway to the tropics,” and South Florida enjoys the same climate.

We don’t have the crowds in Vero Beach like some other Atlantic Coast beaches, but what we lack in people makes up for sea turtles. You’ll see their nests marked with orange triangles up and down the beaches. There are hundreds.

You know you’ve scored something as impressive as winning a jackpot if you see them hatch and head to the shoreline.

vero-beach-sand-umbrellas

The most visited beaches are Humiston, Jaycee Park, South Beach, and more secluded spots like Turtle Trail. Humiston has fun playground equipment, and Jaycee is great for picnics and spotting wild rabbits. All are good for swimming and sunbathing, but remember that we have rip currents, which can be dangerous.

We get asked if Vero Beach is nice by many of our readers, and as you can see for yourself, it is stunning.

Near the Beach Offerings and Parks

Vero Beach offers a more serene and peaceful atmosphere, unlike other crowded Atlantic Coast beaches. And while we may have fewer people, we make up for it with something special – sea turtles! As you stroll along the shore, you’ll spot their nests marked with vibrant orange triangles. It’s a sight to behold. And if you’re lucky enough to witness the hatchlings making their way to the sea, it’s like hitting the jackpot!

couple-walking-on-the-beach

There are several popular beaches to choose from in Vero Beach. Humiston, Jaycee Park, South Beach, and Turtle Trail are among the most frequented. Humiston boasts fun playground equipment, perfect for entertaining the little ones.

Jaycee Park is a fantastic spot for picnics and spotting wild rabbits. And all of these beaches offer swimming and sunbathing opportunities. However, we remind you to be cautious of rip currents, which can be dangerous.

playground-vero-beach

Royal Palm Pointe Park is one of our favorites, with fountains, a splash pad, picnic tables, and ultimate Intracoastal views.

2. Indian River Lagoon

Discover the beauty of the Indian River Lagoon, nestled between the barrier island and downtown. You can enjoy exciting activities like boating, jet skiing, water skiing, and kayaking. And for those looking for a leisurely stroll or a bike ride, two stunning bridges await you, offering breathtaking views and photo opportunities.

merril-barber-bridge-vero-beach

If you prefer to admire the bridges from the land, head to A.W. Young Park or Royal Palm Pointe. These fantastic parks provide picnic facilities and spacious areas for social distancing and a chance to observe the bridges from a different perspective.

Royal Palm Pointe is especially popular for fishing and dolphin watching, and it even has an awesome splash pad for the little ones to enjoy.

3. Riverside Theatre

Come experience the excitement at Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach, where I volunteered for several years. This vibrant venue is known for its fantastic programming, including six Broadway-style shows per season, a hilarious comedy zone every other month, and an entertaining dueling piano show.

For the upcoming 2023-2024 season, they have a stellar lineup you won’t want to miss! Enjoy captivating productions like Kinky Boots, Jersey Boys, and Million Dollar Quartet.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! On weekends before the shows, free music sets the mood and delicious food is available for purchase right outside the theater. It’s the perfect way to start your evening of entertainment.

And right next door, you’ll find the highly-acclaimed Children’s Theatre, guaranteed to delight both kids and adults alike. It’s no wonder they receive rave reviews and attract enthusiastic crowds.

4. Vero Beach Museum of Art

Welcome to the Vero Beach Museum of Art , boasting a wide-ranging collection of beautiful artwork. There are rotating galleries featuring state, national, and regional art, along with interactive art classes, a charming museum store, and a delightful cafe (catered by Wood n Spoon).

For those on a budget, mark your calendars for the one day each month when admission is free. Additionally, join in for a monthly art talk, where docents delve into captivating discussions about specific gallery artworks.

I always find myself drawn to the stunning works by Dale Chihuly, but I also recommend checking out the eye-catching soup can piece by Andy Warhol. Take advantage of the outdoor sculpture gardens, perfect for some fresh air and visual inspiration.

Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays.

5. BigShots Golf

BigShots Golf is the ultimate recreation center, offering two floors of state-of-the-art fun. This popular attraction features course-simulation golf, arcade games, and delicious food options, like grilled chicken satay and duck confit flatbread.

It’s the perfect place for the whole family to enjoy. If you’ve never experienced incredible golf centers of this nature before, get ready to be pleasantly surprised by just how enjoyable and addictive they can be.

6. Historic Dodgertown

Visit the  Jackie Robinson Training Complex , formerly known as Dodgertown, easily one of the best things to do in Vero Beach! This iconic complex was a hub for the Dodgers’ spring training for many years until 2008. People still often inquire if the team practices here, showing this place’s lasting impact and popularity.

But Dodgertown has undergone a revitalization, and it now offers even more than before. You’ll find comfortable lodging, a 6,500-seat stadium, and spacious meeting areas alongside state-of-the-art training facilities.

But it doesn’t stop there! The Jackie Robinson Training Complex is not just limited to baseball. It hosts tournaments and training sessions for various sports, including softball, lacrosse, rugby, football, rowing, swimming, and soccer.

Teams from all around the world come here to hone their skills and enjoy top-notch facilities.

7. Environmental Learning Center

Discover the captivating Environmental Learning Center (ELC), a must-visit destination offering dynamic museum exhibits, interactive learning experiences, and exciting outdoor rentals. Explore the wonders of nature through invigorating boat rides, thrilling kayaking adventures, or engaging guided excursions.

The ELC also boasts delightful hiking paths that are perfect for all ages. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, you’ll find something truly enriching during your visit. Take advantage of their incredible lineup of events and seasonal activities.

On a personal note, even at two years old, our granddaughter loved visiting the ELC and playing with the hands-on displays, participating in the programming, and taking nature hikes.

8. McKee Botanical Garden

Wander through the breathtaking  McKee Botanical Garden . Created by the talented Waldo Sexton, a local artist, and philanthropist, this stunning garden spans over 18 acres of tranquility and natural beauty. Whether you’re a passionate photographer or simply looking to immerse yourself in nature, McKee Gardens is the perfect spot.

Discover the wonders of native plants and trees, and revel in the enchanting lily ponds, bamboo forests, and captivating garden art. You’ll also find some extremely rare plants there, like shampoo gingers. No matter how often I visited, I always found new things to photograph and enjoy.

9. Manatees

Vero Beach is home to some of Florida’s most unique and fascinating wildlife, including the beloved manatees. These gentle giants are a sight to behold, and there are several locations in the city where you can spot them in their natural habitat.

Head down to the Indian River Lagoon or my favorite, Round Island, to see these incredible creatures up close, or take a guided tour with one of the local tour operators. While at Round Island, 7.5 miles south of 17th St and A1A, bring a picnic or kayak; both are perfect for this natural habitat with a wheelchair-accessible walkway.

Either way, bring your camera, as these encounters are a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

10. Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge

Another great way to immerse yourself in the local natural beauty is to visit  the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge , the first of its kind in the country. This stunning sanctuary is home to over 30 species of birds and a variety of other wildlife.

Take a guided tour or explore the refuge on your own to discover the many wonders of this great find. You can enjoy a nice walk or hike in this spacious, picturesque setting; parking is easy and accessible.

C.J. Cannon’s is a Vero Beach staple serving up delicious breakfast dishes for over 20 years. This charming diner-style eatery is known for its homestyle cooking and generous portions, making it a must-visit spot for anyone looking to start their day off on the right foot. It is also at the Vero Beach Airport, so you can watch the private planes land and take off.

Try some of their signature dishes, like the Pineapple Upside Down Waffle or Eggs California or Benedict.

Vero Beach is home to various unique, locally-owned boutiques, and there’s no better place to shop for one-of-a-kind treasures than Ocean Drive, parallel to the beach. 15. Vero Beach Book Center

Vero Beach Book Center is a must-visit destination for bibliophiles and those needing a good beach read. This independently-owned bookstore is one of the best in the state, with a massive selection of books, magazines, and other literary delights to choose from.

Stop in to browse the shelves, attend an in-person author event, or bring the kids in for the treasures found on the second floor that are even good enough to satisfy your Christmas shopping needs.

16. Indian River Citrus Museum

Learn about the fascinating local industry with a visit to the  Indian River Citrus Museum . This fascinating museum celebrates the rich history of Vero Beach’s citrus industry, exploring everything from the early pioneers to the modern-day growers. Indian River is the citrus capital of North America—nearly eight million bushels of citrus ship from this location around the world annually.

Admire vintage orange crate labels, explore exhibits on everything from growing to harvesting, and sample some of the fresh, delicious fruit the area is known for.

17. Vero Beach Outlets

If you’re in the mood for some serious retail therapy, head to Vero Beach Outlets. Located just off I-95, this outdoor shopping complex offers an impressive selection of well-known brands and popular stores, with everything from fashion to home goods.

Columbia, Coach, and Restoration Hardware are some of the more popular designer and retail shops.

18. Walking Tree Brewery

Craft beer enthusiasts will want to experience Vero Beach’s very own  Walking Tree Brewery . This modern brewery in Aviation District serves up an impressive selection of beers, including IPAs, stouts, and sours. Try their signature beer flight and sample some of their best brews, such as the White Walking Tree IPA and the Circadian Rhythm Coffee Porter.

Take a brewery tour to learn about brewing and see where the magic happens.

19. Crab Stop

Love seafood? Head to the Crab Stop for some of the freshest in town. This beloved restaurant is in Royal Palm Pointe and has been a locals’ favorite for years. Pick up some garlic crabs (their claim to fame!), fresh shrimp, or locally-caught catch-of-the-day fish, and don your bib for some serious eating!

My standing order is the Snow Deluxe Table Combo (great to share), with a pound of potatoes, two corn coblets, three clusters of snow crabs, a lobster, and a dozen jumbo shrimp. It is finger-licking good!

20. Poinsettia Groves Market

Are you craving a sweet and healthy snack in Vero Beach? Look no further than Poinsettia Groves Market on Route 1. This family-owned business has been serving delicious citrus fruits, jellies, and marmalades since the 1940s. Stop by year-round and sample some of their juicy grapefruit, sweet oranges, or tangy tangerines.

Poinsettia Groves also sells gift baskets and ships fruits across the country, a popular thing to do when visiting Indian River County. Psst…you can get #28 at this stop.

This oceanfront hotel, owned by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, has all the amenities to make your stay unforgettable, including private balconies with ocean views, a full-service spa, and on-site restaurants.

The hotel’s rooms are designed to provide a relaxing and tropical atmosphere, reflecting the essence of Vero Beach. Celebrated as one of the best beach resorts in Florida, Costa d’Este is worth the splurge. Do the Conga with Gloria, as I like to say.

Anyone should appreciate the serene experience of feeding the squirrels at Veteran’s Memorial Island Sanctuary. This 20-acre park located on a barrier island off Vero Beach is a haven for animals, wildlife, and nature lovers. Take a stroll through the beautiful nature trails and spend some time observing the native birds, turtles, and alligators.

28. Try a Honeybell From Peterson Groves

Peterson’s Groves and Nursery is a local citrus farm that offers delicious fruits, namely citrus, including oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes. The farm also sells a unique Honeybell, an extra juicy citrus fruit that tastes like a mix of sweet (like a mandarin orange) and sour (like a grapefruit).

The refreshing honeybell is anticipated year-round and is a huge seller in the Indian River. Be sure to try one if you are here during the first part of the year.

29. Sebastian Inlet State Park

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town and immerse yourself in nature, head to  Sebastian Inlet State Park , a pet-friendly area a few miles south of Vero Beach. We love this beautiful park with various overnight options, including tent and RV camping. Enjoy the park’s hiking trails, fishing pier, and sandy shores. You may also want to do an airboat tour on your visit.

Sebastian Inlet is a great place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and enjoy some peace and quiet.

30. Waldo’s at the Driftwood Hotel

For a delicious lunch or dinner, head to  Waldo’s  at the iconic Driftwood Hotel (another Waldo Sexton-designed property), where you can try their famous fish tacos. These tacos are made with fresh local fish, crispy cabbage, and a flavorful sauce and are served with a side of chips and salsa.

The restaurant also offers a nice selection of cocktails and beer and has the best beachfront address in Vero Beach.

I go for the Traveler’s Shrimp, with three kinds of shrimp that will knock your socks off. Try the coleslaw and pasta salad as your side items.

31. Vero Beach Fishing

Vero Beach is known for its exceptional fresh and saltwater fishing opportunities. Whether a seasoned angler or a beginner, you can enjoy a guided fishing trip and catch some of the most sought-after fish in the area, including snook, redfish, tarpon, and trout.

The fishing charters are available throughout the year and can accommodate groups of all sizes. Pack plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated in the hot Florida sun. I recommend freshwater fishing on the Sebastian River. You may need help reeling them all in!

32. Standup Paddleboarding

Head to Sea Sup Go Paddle & Surf Company , where you can rent standup paddleboards and explore the gorgeous waterways of Vero Beach. Paddleboarding is a great way to get some exercise, soak up the sun, and enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings.

33. Riverside Cafe

Riverside Cafe is a popular seafood restaurant on the Indian River Lagoon. It attracts tourists and locals alike with its mouth-watering dishes and casual beachy vibe. The restaurant serves an abundance of seafood options, all expertly prepared, but burgers and quesadillas are always my go-to items.

Weekends are bumping’ at Riverside Cafe when the nightlife crowds swell to capacity. You might even see Vero Beach native and country music star Jake Owen if he is in town visiting.

34. Diving in the Treasure Coast Waters

Vero Beach offers some of the best diving opportunities in Florida. The Treasure Coast waters are home to numerous shipwrecks, underwater caves, and colorful marine life, making it a popular destination for diving enthusiasts.

You may also want to search for treasures lost in the underwater world after a tragic shipwreck years ago, hence our city’s nickname.

scuba-dive-trip

Fun Fact:   A fantastic $4.5 million has been recovered in gold coins from the eleven 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleets shipwrecked during a hurricane.

What is Vero Beach Like?

Vero Beach is an elegant best-kept secret, mixed with a bit of hometown feel and great weather. With the country’s largest population of retired millionaire CEOs (primarily residing at John’s Island), Vero Beach has enormous wealth. That translates to a great selection of thrift and consignment shops with incredible merchandise.

I have never counted, but our town probably has nearly 100 resale shops. If you are looking for treasures and bargains, try Habitat for Humanity, Kaleidoscope Consignments, Humane Society Thrift Shop, and Hope Resale Boutique.

Fantastic local Vero Beach blog! I love the look and feel scrolling through the various features. My family and I relocated to Vero Beach a few years ago and still love to explore. Vero beach has something a little different to offer than the other towns and cities nearby.

I found your blog searching fo some inspiration to share my own experiences too. Great images and local hints for fun stuff to do and relax.

Since we moved here we've gotten established (doing nothing we expected) and have rooted in forever. My wife is a popular local real estate agent and I am chasing my dreams as an entrepreneur. Vero has a lot to offer if you're serious about the Vero life.

All the best to you, I can't wait to see more!

Wednesday 3rd of October 2018

I am in the Cape Canaveral area right now (moved from Virginia a few months ago, job still in DC but work remotely) but looking to buy a place in Vero Beach. Just wondering if it is mostly retired people living in Vero Beach. Cape Canaveral is that way although Cocoa Beach and Melbourne seem to have a good mix. I honestly am not ready to move or buy a place where I am surrounded by retirees. Can you please tell me if this is the case? And great article. very helpful. Thank you.

Saturday 6th of October 2018

I would say that over half our town consists of snowbirds so we are pretty calm and quiet for the rest of the year. The median age when I first moved here was pretty old but many millennials are now making Vero their home or coming back home to Vero Beach. Real estate is pricy, but there is plenty to do. ;)

Saturday 4th of August 2018

seriously thinking of moving to Vero. We are moving to Florida, just not decided on the Gulf Coast (i.e. Ft. Myers) or Vero.

Friday 17th of August 2018

We love it here! ;) So much to do and a nice breeze. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them.

Friday 29th of June 2018

Vero Beach is an awesome place to live! There is always local and friendly service providers that can help you out when the weather gets too hot!

True! We've had great service with local providers here.

Travel + Leisure names the 15 best beaches in Florida to bring your families

Tripadvisor Best of the Best Beaches 2022

Fort Lauderdale Beach, FL

With so many great beaches in Florida, picking the perfect spot for your family vacation can be hard.

Do you want to be able to walk to attractions like piers, parks, and restaurants with your family after you’ve stashed away the beach toys for the day? Or do you prefer a more secluded sandy escape where the focus is on white sand, waves, and a sublime beachfront hotel?

There’s no reason why you can’t tick all those boxes and more. Florida’s more than 800 miles of coastline overloads you with sun-splashed options, from the Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico shorelines south into the Florida Keys.

These top 15 family-friendly beach destinations around Florida are perfect for your next getaway. Some are only a few miles away!

15: Vero Beach

The Florida Treasure Coast town of Vero Beach is ideal for a family vacation where you can stay at an oceanfront hotel, park the car for the week, and use bikes or your own two feet to get around.

Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa sits steps from the sand and wraps perks like beach cruiser bikes, stand-up paddle boards, and sea kayaks into the resort fee.

Step out of the front lobby and you can be at oceanfront restaurants like Waldo’s Restaurant , Mulligan’s Beach House , and The Lemon Tree in a minute or two.

This stretch of Florida is called the Treasure Coast because of Spanish galleons that spilled their loot here during a hurricane in 1715. For something extra fun with the kids, rent a metal detector from Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum and head down to the sand to look for bonafide pirate booty.

14: Panama City Beach

Sunset dolphin cruises in the Gulf of Mexico, tours to undeveloped Shell Island just offshore, and 27 miles of glorious white-sand beaches make Panama City Beach a perennial Florida favorite.

Families with young kids appreciate that the waters are usually as calm as a lake, ideal for splashing in the shallows. St. Andrews State Park ’s undeveloped stretch of sand is idyllic for playing castaway.

And for a more entertainment-oriented scene, check out the stores, restaurants, and IMAX movie theater at Pier Park .

13: Longboat Key

Just west of downtown Sarasota on Florida’s gorgeous Gulf Coast, Longboat Key is a primarily residential beach community home to some of the most beautiful and calm beaches in the state.

Families love checking into condominium-style properties like Sand Cay Beach Resort that make it easy to settle in and stay a while with full kitchens and gulf-front barbecue areas.

For a break from the beach, take the family on an outing to Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium to spot manatees and sea turtles.

12: Cocoa Beach

Rocket launches at nearby Cape Canaveral, sea turtle walks to see nesting mothers during the summer months at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge , and surf lessons on the same beaches where world champion Kelly Slater grew up are just a few reasons to plan a family beach vacation to Cocoa Beach.

The kids will love to meet the talking African parrot at Beach Place Guesthouses , where oceanfront apartment-style accommodations await along one of Florida’s most beautiful stretches of beachfront.

11: Amelia Island

Active families find lots to love during a Florida beach vacation to one of the northernmost coastal communities in the state.

Just north of Jacksonville, Amelia Island has 23 miles of dedicated cycling lanes to explore, and renting a bike is a great way to hit the remote beaches of Fort Clinch State Park and cute downtown Fernandina Beach, lined with restaurants and boutiques.

Accommodations span the spectrum, from the luxe oceanfront Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island to SpringHill Suites Amelia Island , in a great location right across from the state park.

10: Clam Pass Park

Naples is known for its beautiful beaches. But families, in particular, gravitate to the picturesque and calm sands at Clam Pass Park , which you can reach via a complimentary golf cart tram ride (or stroll) along a shaded boardwalk from the parking lot.

Down on the beach, hire kayaks or canoes to explore a watery trail through the mangroves, or just rent an umbrella and chairs to set up camp for the day on the sand.

9: Key Biscayne

The Miami Beach fray can feel a bit frantic for some families. If you’re looking for mellower beaches and activities within easy striking distance of downtown Miami and Brickell (but a world apart), Key Biscayne, just across the causeway, is the spot.

Among the great family beaches here is the long, undeveloped stretch at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park , where can you traipse the 95 steps up to the top of a historic lighthouse that dates to 1825.

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami fronts a lovely beach and has an onsite Ritz Kids club. It’s worth venturing offshore into Biscayne National Park , too, for snorkeling excursions and family-friendly boat trips into Biscayne Bay.

8: St. Pete Beach

City and beach come together in the best way possible in the Tampa Bay area when you plan a beach vacation to St. Pete. Stay right on the Gulf of Mexico at The Don CeSar , where you can take advantage of the hotel’s free bikes and two gulf-front pools when you’re not building castles in the powdery white sand.

Towel off to explore nearby downtown St. Pete, too, where St. Pete Pier beckons with a bay beach, marine-themed playground, and a rooftop tiki bar restaurant with beautiful views of downtown.

One of Florida’s most storied and upscale gulf towns, Naples happens to be a wonderful family beach destination, thanks to its walkability along posh Fifth Avenue, pretty urban parks to explore, nearby access to Everglades National Park , and sublime beaches.

LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort fronts Naples’ prettiest beach and has appealing family amenities that include in-room glamping set-ups where kids can sleep in adorable canvas tents, pools overlooking the beach, and sandcastle-building toys for playtime.

Nearby activities in town include the Naples Train Museum, the historic Naples Pier, and Naples Zoo .

6: New Smyrna Beach

Old-school Florida vibes await at this East Coast beach town a little over an hour’s drive northeast of Orlando’s theme park attractions .

Easily one of the best beaches near Orlando, New Smyrna Beach caters to families with a pleasant small-town vibe and long, wide beaches that are easy to pedal a beach cruiser along thanks to the packed sand.

There are plenty of hotels, condos, and vacation rentals along the beach itself. But for something different, plan a family stays along the river at Black Dolphin Inn, a charming bed-and-breakfast tucked into an oak-lined neighborhood along the Indian River.

Off-the-beach family activities include airboat tours along the St. Johns River and eco-tours from the Marine Discovery Center to spot manatees and dolphins.

5: St. Augustine Beach

For a family destination with history down every street and fabulous beaches to boot close by, St. Augustine Beach ticks all the boxes.

Founded in 1565, downtown St. Augustine itself is America’s oldest city. Walking its streets and majestic fort, the Castillo de San Marcos , with the family feels like strolling through a living history lesson that’s never boring.

When beach time comes calling, St. Augustine Beach beckons with waves that stay gentle most of the year for beginner surfers to enjoy and beautiful Ocean Hammock Park to explore, with its boardwalks crisscrossing scenic wetlands and a great onsite playground, too.

4: Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

Families who vacation in the Florida Keys are often left wondering where all the beaches are on these coral rock islands. While there aren’t many true beaches throughout the island chain, one of the best family beaches in the Florida Keys awaits at the end of US Highway 1 in Key West at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park .

Pack a picnic and your snorkeling masks and fins to make the most of Key West’s best swimming beach, where you can always find a shady spot to lay out your towel under a tree.

Nearby, the free Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is a perfect family stop to learn more about Florida Keys’ habitats and native creatures.

3: Hutchinson Island

One of the only places in Florida where you can go horseback riding on the beach, Hutchinson Island promises a surprising mix of family fun in Florida’s St. Lucie County along the Atlantic Coast between Vero Beach and Palm Beach.

Stay right on the ocean at the Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa to maximize sun and surf.

It’s worth getting in the car to drive slightly north to visit downtown Fort Pierce’s restaurants, shops, and the excellent Fort Pierce Farmers Market , held every Saturday right along the Indian River.

2: Destin-Fort Walton Beach

A relaxing Northwest Florida family beach vacation practically plans itself when you venture to Destin-Fort Walton Beach in the Panhandle, where shallow, Caribbean-blue waters and sugar-fine beaches make it easy to do nothing but soak up the sun all day long.

With the luxurious Henderson Beach Resort as your base of operations here, make time to head out on dolphin excursions and paddling trips.

1: Fort Lauderdale

Its reputation as a spring break and yachting paradise notwithstanding, Fort Lauderdale Beach promises buckets of family fun along 24 miles of beachfront and in its scenic riverfront neighborhoods.

The boutique oceanfront Pelican Grand Beach Resort fronts a 500-foot-long private beach and has a lazy river and pool kids won’t want to get out of.

When you do towel off, hop aboard a Water Taxi to cruise past the mansions and yachts lining the Intracoastal Waterway and stroll Las Olas Boulevard’s ice cream shops, boutiques, and atmospheric cafes.

Just be sure to check for COVID-related closures and news and local rules, including quarantine requirements if you're from out of state, before you go.

Anna Maria Island, Fla.

Hit the reset button on this peaceful, 7-mile-long barrier island an hour's drive southwest of Tampa. Stroll wide swathes of talcum-powder sand in a Gulf Coast hidden gem with that hard-to-find “Old Florida” feel and a refreshing lack of high-rise condos. Savor rosy-hued sunsets that often attract newlywed couples posing for photographers. Stay in a small, family-owned oceanfront inn.

Del Monte Beach, Calif.

Fans of Big Little Lies will enjoy walking or jogging to the sound of crashing waves on the dramatic, romantic Monterey Peninsula coastline , just as the characters in the TV series did. South of Houghton M. Roberts Beach in Monterey, Del Monte is popular with locals, who also enjoy the boardwalk path through the dunes. Whale watching is an attraction throughout the year.

Kauapea Beach, Hawaii

Nicknamed “ Secret Beach ,” this palm tree-lined strand on the north coast of Kauai near Kilauea is accessible via a brief hike. You'll be rewarded with sparsely occupied stretches of sands, ebony lava rocks, tidal pools and even a waterfall. Some shed their bathing suits here, but if that's not your thing, there's plenty of room to unwind fully suited, enjoying your own slice of paradise.

item 4 of Gallery image - Pawleys Island, South Carolina

Pawleys Island, S.C.

The skinny barrier island boasting wide, serene sands is low-key compared with better-known Myrtle Beach 25 miles to the north. Connected to the mainland by two small causeways, Pawleys is nicknamed “arrogantly shabby” for its unpretentious oceanfront houses that can be rented for multigenerational getaways. For centuries, the area has appealed to low-key Southern gentry, including former vice president Al Gore. Summer residents and day-trippers get in their 10,000 steps striding up and down four miles of sand backed by dunes and sea oats. Take home a locally made rope hammock.

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

If you avoid spring break, when college students flock here, you'll find plenty of space to lounge in your beach chair on what's billed as the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world — encompassing 70 miles of Texas coastline. Enjoy camping and kayaking in the saltwater Laguna Madre or the chance to spot nearly 400 bird species.

Schoolhouse Beach, Wis.

Drive a car or RV onto a ferry at the tip of Door County in tiny Northport, about 200 miles northeast of Milwaukee, for the half-hour ride to Washington Island. Then marvel at one of the world's rare smooth limestone-pebble beaches. Snap photos of the gray-hued expanse and blue waters of Lake Michigan, make piles of glacier-buffed stones (but it's illegal to take one home) or take a dip in the crystal-clear water.

item 7 of Gallery image - aerial photo of Montauk Point State Park

Montauk Point State Park, N.Y.

Worth the trek to the tip of Long Island, the easternmost point of New York State has the oldest lighthouse in the state (dating back to 1792), rocky beaches with postcard-perfect views of the Atlantic and Block Island Sound and plenty of room to spread your beach blanket on the park's 862 acres. Surf fishing is popular, as is watching the seals that play and sun on rocks.

Bandon State Natural Area, Ore.

Whimsical rock formations with names like Wizard's Hat and Cat and Kittens jut out of icy waters in this coastal gem that's less well known than other Oregon beaches. A four-hour drive southwest of Portland, it boasts crashing waves, towering bluffs and abundant wildlife. View it all from the privacy of your vehicle on Bandon's Beach Loop Drive.

item 9 of Gallery image - wild pony on Carova Beach

Carova Beach, N.C.

You'll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to travel unpaved roads and cruise on unspoiled beach here, where wild mustangs roam. The 11-mile-long northern tip of the Outer Banks, just south of the Virginia border, is a peninsula that's also home to the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. It's a magnet for bird-watchers, and where endangered sea turtles find refuge. Currituck also has ramp access for beach wheelchairs, which can be rented in the area.

Diverse attractions distinguish this quiet coastal destination about 70 miles north of Bar Harbor. Swim in the Atlantic from a half-mile-long pebbly beach or in the warmer fresh water of Simpson Pond. Catch brown trout there during summer months. Hikers can stride miles of trails and snack on wild blueberries from local farms.

Kauai has the most coastline of any other Hawaiian island. That’s 50 miles of seemingly never ending gold sand beaches and turquoise lagoons to splash around and swim in. Known as the “Garden Isle”, Kauai is thick jungle at its interior and striking mountain views with swaying palms along its coasts. Whether you want to simply soak up the sun in the sand or snorkel with sea turtles, here’s our list of the 10 best beaches on Kauai.

If you’re heading to Kauai be sure to take advantage of these great planning resources: – Our Kauai Travel Guide has everything you need to know about the island for your trip. – We’ll help you decide when to plan your trip to Kauai . – No matter what part of the island you want to visit, our Where to Stay database has you covered. – See more than beaches with the best activities and tours Kauai has to offer.

Kauai Beach FAQS:

What are the best swimming beaches on kauai.

The best beaches for swimming on Kauai largely depends on the season. While some of Kauai’s most beautiful and equally fun swimming beaches are located on the North Shore, winter swells make these beaches off limits for half of the year and summer swells in the south can make swimming prohibitive there as well.

Overall, one of the best beaches for swimming during summer on Kauai is Ke’e Beach on the North Shore. In the winter, head down to Poipu Beach for lazy days of swimming and splashing around.

What side of Kauai has the best beaches?

The award for the most stunningly beautiful beaches on Kauai has to go to the North Shore for its striking cliffs, sprawling golden sand coastline, and turquoise water. Unfortunately, the beaches on Kauai’s North Shore become treacherous in winter due to rough currents and large waves.

We cover more about the waves and rain in the Best Time to Visit Kauai. It’s a must-read before booking your trip.

For winter swimming , head to Kauai’s south shore beaches where Poipu Beach and Shipwreck Beach are stunning alternatives.  Poipu itself has a lot of great beaches that make this list.

What is the best snorkeling beach on Kauai?

Kauai is well known for its snorkeling, offering options for everyone from beginners to pros. Lydgate Beach has a calm lagoon that’s great for the novice snorkeler while those with more experience will love the abundant sea life and striking reef at Makua (Tunnels) Beach.

Check out our favorite snorkeling spots on Kauai .

What are the best public beaches on Kauai to watch sunrise and sunset?

All beaches on Kauai (and in Hawaii) are public! Even those that are situated in front of resorts. The best sunset beach is Salt Pond Beach Park which also happens to be a great place to bring children swimming. And if you’re really excited to see the sunset from the west side of Kauai, consider a sunset sail.

  • Sunset dinner sail

Poipu Beach is another alternative for sunset views and glimpses of the monk seals playing in the ocean but it can get very crowded. For sunrise, head to Lydgate Beach Park or back to Poipu.

The 10 Best Beaches on Kauai

After exploring Kauai’s beaches, from the South to the North Shore, and most in between, these are 10 of our favorite beaches that we keep returning to!

1. Ke’e Beach

The best beach on Kauai in our opinion? Ke’e Beach! Somewhat hidden away inside the Ha’ena State Park, Ke’e Beach is where Kauai’s notoriously lush jungle and craggy cliffs meet the sea.

You’ll need to be prepared with a reservation for the Ha’ena State Park if you plan on visiting Ke’e Beach, but this extra step, which limits the amount of visitors each day, means that this beach is much less crowded.

The price to enter varies from $35 for an adult shuttle pass to $5 for walkers and bikers, but you’ll need to be quick to snag the less expensive options. You can reach Ke’e Beach by a short walk along a raised pathway through taro fields and dense jungle before revealing this beautiful swim spot.

Protected by a serene lagoon in the summer, be aware that Ke’e Beach, like all North Shore beaches, becomes quite dangerous in the winter due to swift currents and swells. If you enjoy hiking, Ke’e Beach also happens to be the start of the Kalalau Trail, an 11 mile hike that follows some of the most stunning scenery of the Nāpali Coast.

best beaches Kauai - Ke'e beach

2. Makua (Tunnels) Beach

Often touted as the best beach for snorkeling on Kauai, Makua Beach (also known as Tunnels Beach) offers up breathtaking views of the iconic Nāpali Coast, great sunsets, and crystal clear water. Visitors will love walking along this wide, sandy beach, taking in the scenery and enjoying Kauai’s ever abundant greenery. They don’t call this Hawaiian island the “Garden Isle” for nothing after all!

Makua Beach got its nickname of “Tunnels Beach” because of the lava tubes that have formed beneath the surface of the water. This is just one of the reasons why Makua Beach is such a wonderful snorkeling spot on Kauai. Abundant wildlife, like sea turtles (also known as honu in Hawaiian), monk seals, and colorful fish can be seen swimming along the reef and just beyond the drop off.

There are a few things that make Makua (Tunnels) Beach a bit trickier than most on Kauai. First, you’ll need to plan ahead for parking. It can be difficult to find a spot, especially in high season, although you can read these tips for finding parking at Makua Beach .

The second thing to keep in mind when planning a trip to Tunnels Beach is that winter swells create dangerous swimming conditions meaning that this beach is essentially off limits from November to March.

best beaches Kauai - Makua beach

3. Poipu Beach

Located in Kauai’s southern resort town of Poipu, Poipu Beach is one of the most popular beaches and is world renowned for its golden sand and unique, double crescent shape known as a tombola. Many Kauai vacationers flock to Poipu for its snorkeling and ideal swimming conditions – especially in the winter when many North Shore beaches are dangerous due to intense surf.

One of the star features of Poipu is the fact that there’s just so much to do! Want to catch a few waves? Check. Looking to snorkel with tropical fish along a vibrant reef system? Check. Dreaming of floating in peaceful water or swimming some laps? Check.

Snorkeling tours and surfing lessons take place right near Poipu beach!

You also have a very good chance of getting a glimpse of Hawaiian Monk Seals , an endangered species.

Because Poipu Beach is in the heart of Poipu itself there are lots of options for food and drink nearby and there’s plenty of parking. One thing to keep in mind is the summer swells which can get a bit intense. Luckily, there’s usually a lifeguard on duty and the reef system helps to protect the beach.

best beaches Kauai - Poipu Beach

4. Kiahuna Beach

Do you picture your Hawaiian vacation beneath palm trees swaying in the breeze and swimming in beautiful, turquoise waters lapping the sandy shoreline? Then Kiahuna Beach is for you!

Located right next to Poipu Beach, Kiahuna Beach makes for a great alternative should Poipu be crowded with an onslaught of tourists. Come summer this is also a great spot for surfing and bodyboarding/boogie boarding.

Kiahuna Beach has an extra amenity due to its proximity to the Sheraton – a bar. That’s right, you can sip a Mai Tai while watching the waves roll in with your toes in the sand.

And if you want to stay just steps from Kiahuna Beach, there are two great vacation rental options to consider:

  • Poipu Kapili is a short 5 minute walk to Kiahuna Beach
  • Kiahuna Plantation resort is beachfront on Kiahuna Beach!

5. Ha’ena Beach Park

There’s no doubt that the North Shore has some of Kauai’s most stunning beaches and Ha’ena Beach Park is no exception. Jungle truly meets the sea along this pristine stretch of sand that is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing during the summer months.

This is also a great spot for simply lounging in the sand, taking in the views, or for strolling along the beach. Although it’s in a more remote location than other beaches, Ha’ena Beach isn’t lacking in amenities with lifeguards on duty, bathrooms, picnic tables, and showers.

This is one of the best spots on the island for sunset and you won’t want to miss watching it dip into the ocean in a fanfare of sherbert colors. For an added activity for kids and adults alike, head just across the street from the parking lot to explore the dry caves. As with all North Shore beaches, there are strong currents in winter that make it otherwise inaccessible. Keep this in mind if you plan on visiting Kauai from November to March.

best beaches Kauai - Ha'ena Beach

6. Anini Beach

Another of Kauai’s North Shore beaches, Anini Beach is tucked away down a secluded road. Here you’ll find peaceful sea and one of the longest reefs in all of Hawaii, making it wonderful for spotting sea turtles.

Come for calm waters in summer that are perfect for splashing around – especially with kids. In fact, Anini Beach’s abundance of shade and shallow water make it a great spot in northern Kauai for bringing children to swim and enjoy the ocean.

Anini Beach is also one of the very few beaches on Kauai’s North Shore that can sometimes be safer for swimming in winter. A long reef protects the beach from the brutal waves that grace Kauai’s northern beaches come November. Note that this beach does not have lifeguards so you’ll need to be extra mindful of ocean conditions.

best beaches Kauai - Anini Beach

7. Hanalei Beach

Hanalei Beach is a stunning, wide stretch of sand in the town of Hanalei along Kauai’s North Shore. This beach is perfect for taking a sunset stroll with beautiful views of emerald mountain scenery in the background. It’s also a wonderful swim spot in summer and great for surfing and snorkeling. You might recognize this beach from popular movies like The Descendants .

Jumping off the Hanalei Pier is a great way to end (or start) your day at Hanalei Beach. Walk back from the Hanalei Pier for stunning views of the jagged Nāpali Coast, framed by white sand and cerulean water. As with most of the North Shore beaches, Hanalei Beach can see massive swells in winter and currents are often downright dangerous.

8. Lydgate Beach Park

The only beach on our list that isn’t in the south or north of Kauai, Lydgate Beach Park is along the island’s eastern coast, also known as the “Coconut Coast”. Most visitors come to Lydgate Beach for its gorgeous lagoon, perfectly protected from rough waves by lava rock, it’s a great place for windsurfing and snorkeling.

Lydgate Beach Park is a wonderful spot for kids with an awesome park and super calm swimming area. Easy access to restrooms, showers, and picnic tables, with an expansive green space to run around in, are the cherry on top.

best beaches kauai - Lydgate Beach Park

9. Salt Pond Beach Park

Southern Kauai’s Salt Pond Beach Park is another ideal swimming spot for the kiddos with its protected lagoon, lifeguards, bathrooms, and showers.

Located next to the natural salt ponds (can you guess where it got its name?), getting to this beach provides an added adventure if you’re interested in seeing this natural wonder. These salt ponds can only be utilized by native Hawaiians and are unique as they are naturally occurring, unlike most of the manmade salt ponds around the island.

best beaches kauai - Salt Pond Beach park

10. Shipwreck Beach

Shipwreck Beach is one of the most striking, and interesting, beaches on Kauai’s South Shore. Named for a ship that quite literally sank off its shores, Shipwreck Beach is best for sunbathing and swimming in the winter and it’s a popular spot for surfers. As this beach is located at the end of the Poipu strip, it’s also typically more peaceful with few other beachgoers around.

The parking lot for Shipwreck Beach happens to be the trailhead for the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, a beautiful 3.8 mile hike along the coastal cliffs. In contrast to Kauai’s North Shore beaches, Shipwreck Beach becomes dangerous in the summer months. You’ll want to avoid swimming here from May to September.

By Marcie Cheung. This guide to local things to do in Oahu includes affiliate links to trusted partners!

One of my favorite places to travel in the United States is Hawaii. In fact, I’ve visited more than 35 times since I was a kid and we keep going back year after year.

As soon as I hear that someone has just come back from an Oahu vacation, I always ask where they stayed and what they did on their trip. So many of them don’t really leave Waikiki — a touristy Honolulu neighborhood on the south shore of Oahu known for its high-rises and surf beach — and it’s heartbreaking.

They are missing out on some of the best Oahu experiences!

So, I thought I’d highlight some of the little known Oahu attractions and activities that first-timers might not know about. There are so many unique and unusual things to do in Oahu if you go beyond the typical things to do in Waikiki and and Honolulu (though you can find a non touristy things to do in Honolulu if you look hard enough).

These ideas are aimed to help visitors get a more authentic Hawaii experience by showcasing some unique local things to do in Oahu to get people away from their resort and out exploring this amazing Hawaiian island!

Moreover, these unique Oahu experiences can be enjoyed by groups as well as those traveling solo to Hawaii . These local things to do in Honolulu and a few off the beaten path Oahu locations will take you on a trip you’ll never forget, no matter who you’re traveling with!

Table of Contents

1. Explore The Arts Scene In Kaka’ako

Located between Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana Center is Kaka’ako. This is an up-and-coming neighborhood that has a killer local brewery scene, hipster coffee shops and trendy boutiques.

But, the big reason to head here is for their incredible street art.

Local Things To Do In Oahu

Each February, there’s a big event called Pow! Wow! Hawaii where more than 100 international and local artists head to Kaka’ako to paint murals all over the neighborhood. And then they stay up the rest of the year for the public to admire.

While there are lots and lots of murals all over the neighborhood, you’ll want to head to Lana Lane. This is a functioning artist collective featuring artists like Simone Legno, co-founder and artist of Tokidoki.

This is where you want to go to find cool Oahu Instagram walls or just stroll around while sipping coffee.

No local’s guide to Oahu would be complete without mentioning this creative and unforgettable experience as it’s one of the most unique things to do in Honolulu.

2. Learn How To Make A Haku Lei

One of my favorite things to explore in Hawaii is its incredible culture.

While you can learn how to string a lei at most Oahu resorts, a more local experience is to learn how to make your own haku lei.

favorite things in oahu

Haku leis — those gorgeous Hawaiian flower crowns — are all over Instagram these days. They give any outfit the “wow” factor. But, they are tricky to make.

That’s why I suggest booking an Airbnb Experience with a local who can teach you exactly how to make a haku lei or lei po’o.

While you are working, you can “talk story” and learn a bit more about Hawaiian culture and the history of lei making.

Insider tip:

Keep your haku lei in the fridge or a cooler to extend it’s life!

3. Swim At Kapena Falls

Oahu has a ton of incredible waterfall hikes, which is what makes it one of the best islands to visit in Hawaii . The most popular ones are Manoa Falls and Waimea Falls.

But, if you want to avoid the masses or are looking for non tourist things to do in Oahu, head for Kapena Falls. It’s about a half-mile hike, but it’s all in the shade. At the end of the hike, you’ll see a little waterfall with a pool that is perfect for swimming.

What makes it a unique thing to do on Oahu is that it’s also a great opportunity to see ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs. These are pictures — kind of like Egyptian Hieroglyphs — that tell a story or mark historic events.

At Kapena Falls, the petroglyphs are about the myth of Kaupe, who was half man and half dog. According to legend, he lives in the area.

Because of this, it’s also a sacred area. So, remember to be respectful.

4. Check Out A Farm Tour

For decades, Hawaii has imported about 90% of its food . Not only is that expensive, but it’s also a bit scary when you realize Hawaii has natural disasters like tsunamis and hurricanes.

That’s why Oahu’s local food movement has really taken off in the past few years.

While you can taste locally grown food at Hawaii grocery stores or farmer’s’ markets, you can also get the full experience at a Hawaii farm.

learn about oahu on a farm tour

Kahumana Organic Farm and Cafe is located in Waianae and they offer 45-60 minute public guided tours of their property. Their food is so delicious that they sell their produce to Roy’s and Monkeypod Kitchen.

They are a nonprofit that is dedicated to aiding, supporting, and improving the lives of locals in need.

Another option is Full Circle Farm in Waimanalo, which offers cooking demonstrations and farm-to-table dining.

5. Get Authentic Shave Ice

If you want to experience Oahu like a local, you have to eat like a local! The most popular Hawaii treat is shave ice and you can find shave ice spots all over Oahu.

However, many of them — like Matsumoto’s in Haleiwa — have long, long lines full of tourists from opening until close.

shave ice on oahu island in hawaii

If you want to go where locals go, head to Shimazu Store in Honolulu. Here, you’ll find more than 70 different shave ice flavors from tropical fruit like lilikoi and mango to unique flavors like red velvet cake and latte.

Over on the north shore, Aoki’s Shave Ice is another good option for avoiding a long wait. Plus, they even offer shave ice shakes!

6. Learn About WWII (Without Going To Pearl Harbor)

Pearl Harbor is one of the top Oahu attractions. It’s also one of the most crowded. But, that doesn’t mean it’s the only place to learn about Pearl Harbor and World War II.

The Tropic Lightning Museum is located in the Schofield Barracks and holds a staggering collection of memorabilia from the 25th Infantry Division, which was not only in Hawaii during WWII but also Korea and Vietnam.

You can explore the barracks to get an idea of the conditions the soldiers lived in after Pearl Harbor, check out the Wheeler Airfield Gallery, and more.

Another WWII site worth visiting is the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific , located in Honolulu, where you can wander down “memorial path” to pay your respects.

7. Get Grocery Store Poke

While poke has taken the Mainland by storm the past few years, it all started in Hawaii.

It’s basically chopped up raw fish — usually Ahi tuna, salmon, or octopus — that is marinated and topped with seasoning.

hawaiian poke

While there are tons of cute, Insta-worthy poke places on Oahu — like Hula Grill and Heavenly — that’s not really where the locals go.

In fact, you might be surprised to find that some of the best poke on Oahu is actually found at grocery stores!

Foodland is one of the top places locals go for poke that will knock your socks off. You can pick up a tub at the deli and then eat it with rice, with chips, or all by itself.

Costco is another great place to get fresh poke. They have a variety of options and you can’t beat the price!

8. See Authentic Hula (And Skip The Luau)

While there are some very good non-touristy luaus on Oahu — Toa Luau is a personal favorite — most Oahu luaus are all about the watery mai tais and Dad jokes.

Hula is so much more than what you see in most luaus.

oahu and honolulu beyond waikiki

Instead, opt to see a performance by a local halau (hula school) like Halau Hula No’eau .

They are committed to promoting the art of hula. For these dancers, hula is a spiritual experience and a way of life. They perform all over Oahu for special events.

Another option is the Kuhio Beach Hula Show .

Rotating local halau come to perform several nights a week at the Kuhio Beach Hula Mound. This free show starts with a torch lighting ceremony and is perfect for doing Hawaii on a budget .

Oh, and while we’re on the topic of local culture, here are some useful Hawaiian words and phrases to learn before your trip. Learning a few of these phrases is a beautiful way to understand, respect, and celebrate Hawaii’s people, places, and history.

9. Try Coco Puffs At Liliha Bakery

While Hawaii has some pretty outstanding baked goods, like the malasadas from Leonard’s Bakery, Oahu locals drool over the Coco Puffs at Liliha Bakery .

Liliha Bakery is a full-fledged coffee shop/diner with three locations around Oahu. But, it’s their Coco Puffs that really put them on the map.

These cold Hawaiian cream puff pastries are filled with chocolate pudding and topped with a buttery macadamia nut Chantilly frosting.

While you are there, you can also try out their new green tea cream puff.

10. Eat An Authentic Hawaiian Plate Lunch

Don’t go to Hawaii without tasting real Hawaiian food.

And by Hawaiian food, I mean the amazing melting pot of flavors inspired by Japan, China, Korea, and all over the world.

tour and hike oahu beyond waikiki beach

Hawaiian-style plate lunch usually consists of a meat entree, two scoops of rice, and one scoop of macaroni salad.

This is where you can try kalua pork, kalbi ribs, mochiko chicken, lau lau, katsu curry, beef stew, and so many other flavorful options.

Some of the best places to find plate lunch are at Oahu local spots like the Rainbow Drive-In and Yama’s Fish Market . Or grab one from the Hawaii chain restaurant L&L Hawaiian BBQ .

And don’t forget to grab a Spam musubi, which is sort of like a Spam sushi roll, for an after-lunch snack! It’s one of the best non touristy things to do in Oahu because it’s something that the locals really love to do!

11. Do The Lanikai Pillbox Hike

Ditch the tourists that head straight for a morning hike at Diamond Head, which is always at the top of “what to do in Oahu” lists and therefore always crowded. Instead, drive up to Lanikai Pillbox near Lanikai Beach for one of the best sunrise hikes on Oahu.

The Lanikai Pillbox trail got its name because of all the WWII pillboxes along the trail. These were mass-produced during the war but now they are used as pit stops.

At Lanikai, there are two pillboxes. The first one is the easiest to get to and the second one requires a bit more climbing.

This Oahu hiking trail is also one of the best ways to see “The Mokes” which are the two islands of the coast of Kailua. And you’ll get views of the turquoise blue water.

This easy hike doesn’t take much time and it’s a great photo op. Plus, you can head straight to Lanikai Beach after for a refreshing swim.

12. Shop At Hawaiian Boutiques

It’s always fun to discover local brands when shopping in Hawaii.

Ala Moana Center is close to Waikiki and it’s the largest outdoor shopping mall in the world. They have a great mix of local and international brands.

shopping on oahu is one of my favorite things

But, some of the best shops on Oahu are off the beaten path.

Jana Lam is an awesome local designer who creates stylish and colorful accessories.

They do pop-up events all over the island and some of their items are available online. She also has some fabulous hand-drawn coloring sheets with her unique designs.

Oh, and forget the tacky Magnum P-I Aloha shirts that you’ll find at ABC Stores and souvenir stands.

Instead, head to Manuheali’i in Honolulu or Kailua. This is where local musicians and TV personalities go to find contemporary Aloha wear. They have clothing for men, women, and children in lots of different prints.

And if you are looking for cute swimwear, make sure to pick up a Kaikini bikini!

Not only do they have some gorgeous pre-made bikinis, but you can also order a custom bikini. These are so cute and comfortable that you can even wear the bikini tops as bralettes.

13. Taste Poi Mochi

One of the most traditional Hawaiian foods is poi. It’s a brownish-purple paste made from steamed taro root that has been mashed and fermented.

Usually, people eat it alongside fish or meat and it’s a pretty delicious combination, if you know what you’re doing.

However, it can also be used in Hawaiian treats. One of the best Hawaiian desserts is poi mochi.

The mochi is deep-fried in little balls and it’s usually served on a stick. It’s chewy and not overly sweet, but you won’t be able to stop eating it.

Swinging by Uncle Lani’s Poi Mochi or Kamehameha Bakery to grab some poi mochi is definitely one of the local things to do in Oahu that you won’t regret.

14. See A Sunset At Ko Olina

While Hawaii may be known for its stunning sunrises, the sunsets aren’t too shabby either.

Head to Ko Olina on the West side of Oahu for an awesome sunset view.

enjoy hanauma bay, oahu sunsets, and the farmer's market

This is where you’ll find four little lagoons that are great spots to enjoy an Oahu sunset.

I suggest picking up some plate lunches to take with you to the beach and then grabbing some shave ice on the way back for one of the best experiences in Oahu.

Oahu is so much more than tourist traps and crowded beaches. Get out of Waikiki and get a true taste of island life for an incredible Hawaii vacation !

Unique Things To Do in Oahu FAQs

Q) what do locals do in oahu.

You won’t find the locals in Oahu during many of the touristy activities, like swimming at Waikiki Beach or touring Pearl Harbor. To do as the locals do in Oahu, you’ll want to grab some poke at the grocery store or a Hawaiian lunch plate, and catch sunset at the Lanikai Pillbox Hike.

Q) Is Oahu super touristy?

Oahu receives over 4.5 million tourists annually. However, most tend to stay within their resorts and do few local activities. If you want to escape the crowds, trade Diamond Head Hike for Lanikai Pillbox Hike and the more popular waterfalls for Kapena Waterfall.

Q) What are the best local things to do in Oahu?

Trying out the local cuisine is a must, with poke bowls from the grocery store, traditional Hawaiian lunch plates, and coco puffs. The hike to Kapena Waterfall is also lovely and learning about authentic hula is a must!

I love a good local farm tour (I wonder if that’s a side affect from growing up on a farm). Anyway, there are heaps of things on this list that I want to tick off one day. For now we’ve only visited Maui, but I wouldn’t mind visiting the big island as well!

My sister is moving here, so I shared this with her! I cannot wait to visit Oahu!

Do you have a similar article on Maui? We are visiting there.

Oahu looks amazing! I am hoping to get to Hawaii sometime this fall. It’s been on my bucket list for a while. Also, all of the food looks amazing! 🙂

When visiting Hawaii please be respectful of our land (aina) and wild life animals. Don’t litter and especially do not touch the animals you may see resting on the beaches. If visiting the Big Island, do not take anything from the land. Like lava rocks or the black sand from the beaches. It is very sacred to our goddess Pele who to this day is still very much active.. Just wanted to share some helpful tips to first time visitors. Mahalo

If you feel you must share these travel tips, please also include information about traffic and parking restrictions, and caution visitors about the impacts on both humans and animals and the environment. Due to ongoing roadwork, there is NO PARKING allowed on the streets in Lanikai M-F through December. The hundreds of tourists and locals walking, running and biking on the one-way roads every day contributes to traffic jams that have quadrupled travel time in and out of this little residential community. Please encourage respect and courtesy for private and public property and each other! Mahalo nui!

Earthquake maps show where seismic activity shook the Northeast today

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 7:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Residents across the Northeast were rattled by a  4.8 magnitude earthquake that shook  the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey was quick to release maps showing the spot where the quake was centered, in New Jersey, and the area where it was felt.

The USGS reported the quake occurred about 7 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people. There were several aftershocks later in the day, including one with a magnitude of 4.0.

Map shows area affected by earthquake centered in New Jersey

People in Baltimore , Philadelphia , New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

The map below shows the seismic intensity of the earthquake. The map, which is mostly a lighter shade of blue, shows that the intensity was light to weak, depending on the distance from the epicenter.

image-1.jpg

Another map released by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre on X, formerly Twitter, highlights the eyewitness reports of shaking and possible damage levels during the seismic event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have been briefed on the quake.

"We're taking this extremely seriously and here's why: There's always the possibility of aftershocks. We have not felt a magnitude of this earthquake since about 2011," Hochul said.

People across the region were startled by the rumbling of the quake. One New York City resident told CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook, "I was laying in my bed, and my whole apartment building started shaking. I started freaking out,"

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit by an earthquake.

A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884.

The shaking stirred memories of the Aug. 23, 2011, earthquake that jolted tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. Registering magnitude 5.8, it was the strongest quake to hit the East Coast since World War II. The epicenter was in Virginia.

That earthquake left cracks in the Washington Monument, spurred the evacuation of the White House and Capitol and rattled New Yorkers three weeks before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The Best 'Secret' Things to Do in Palm Beach, Florida, According to a Local

Whispered secrets, massive fortunes, billionaires, heiresses, and presidential retreats.

local travel beach

One of the most moneyed zip codes in America, Palm Beach is the destination of choice for thousands of the world's wealthiest snowbirds. A secluded sanctuary for the jet set and around 40 billionaires , Palm Beach is geographically separated from sultry, anything-goes Miami by a mere two hours — and only one on the Brightline — but in reality, it's worlds away.

The barrier island making up Palm Beach proper is notoriously hard to penetrate, but peeking behind the shimmering and seemingly untouchable curtain is half the fun of visiting.

Unravel the island's web of intrigue for yourself and explore these nine hidden gems of Palm Beach that will immediately elevate your status from tourist to in-the-know insider.

Find the only two gravestones in Palm Beach.

It's odd for an island to hold just two gravestones, and it's odder still that they're located side by side in the palm-shaded, bougainvillea-shrouded courtyard of Worth Avenue's swankiest pizza place. Strange as it is, the tiny tombstones of Johnnie Brown and Laddie are hidden amidst the outdoor elegance of Pizza Al Fresco .

It's a bit less bizarre, however, when you consider the fact that Johnnie Brown was a monkey. (Or does that make it more bizarre?) Addison Mizner, eccentric architect of Palm Beach's signature Mediterranean Revival style, carried his pet spider monkey everywhere and even hand-stitched him a silk-lined sombrero with a chin strap, so it's only appropriate that Johnnie Brown received a prominent burial site. His gravestone reads, "Johnnie Brown. The Human Monkey. Died April 30, 1927."

Socialites Rose and Morton Sachs, who later purchased Mizner's iconic villa and lived there for nearly 50 years, sought and received special permission from the town to bury their dog, Laddie, next to Johnnie Brown.

Go celebrity spotting at Palm Beach mainstays.

Rub elbows with the glitterati at island favorites. At Green's Pharmacy & Luncheonette , every social standing finds equal footing over thick milkshakes and clunky plates of diner-style comfort food — the same way it's been since 1938. A classic soda fountain, Green's is more than just a nod to nostalgia; it's still a working pharmacy with house accounts and a drugstore. Inside, you might see a celebrity eating alongside blue-collar workers and beach bums. John F. Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, and Jimmy Buffett are some of the clientele past and present.

Another in-town go-to of the rich and the famous is Sprinkles Ice Cream . The old-timey scoop shop's walls are adorned with photos of celebs like Michael Jackson, Brooke Shields, and Tony Robbins, who've all stopped in for a sweet treat.

Pretend you're a guest at Palm Beach's ritziest resorts.

Here's one of Palm Beach's best-kept secrets: You don't have to be the guest of a ritzy resort to enjoy some of its most alluring amenities. For example, at The Breakers , the undisputed icon of Palm Beach, even non-guests can waltz in and claim a seat at the oceanfront Seafood Bar , where an elongated aquarium with live fish serves as the bar's countertop. (Ask to self-park upon arrival to avoid the $30 valet fee.)

A mainstay of quintessential Palm Beach, The Colony has been a hideaway for the rich and respected ever since its 1947 debut. Dressed in a pale pink façade, the hotel is now equally appealing to the Instagram set. Its modern verve carries through to the backyard pool, which is surrounded by tropical foliage, a lush carpet of mown grass, and the upscale poolside eatery that is Swifty's. You don't have to be a guest to book an umbrella-topped table. When you arrive, notice how the pool is ever-so-slightly Florida-shaped.

In addition, you can snag a day pass to Eau Palm Beach's opulent Eau Spa for just $200. The pass grants you access to a garden, bath lounge, sauna, steam shower, and relaxation lounge (not the resort pools, though, which are reserved for hotel guests). Pro tip: If you book a spa treatment, the price of your day pass goes down to $100.

Hit late-night, high-brow hotspots.

Census data shows the median age for Palm Beach residents is about 70 years old, which means it certainly doesn't pack the sizzle of Miami nightlife. Still, there are places to grab a nightcap or cut a rug.

At Cucina , free pizza used to circulate around 2 a.m. to keep you going 'til the break of dawn. That tradition has quietly died, but flaming sparkler-topped bottles of Yellow Label Veuve — Cucina's take on bottle service — are also rumored to do the trick.

If you're looking for something more low key, swing by HMF at The Breakers to experience an ode to Gilded-Age glamour. Short for Henry Morrison Flagler, legendary real estate baron and the hotel's founder, HMF specializes in cocktails inspired by the prohibition era, and its posh appointments, blanketed in dimmed lights, feels exactly how you'd imagine a stylish 1920s speakeasy would. There may not be hair-down dancing, but the clinking of crystal and the murmur of secrets being spilled over fussily poured Redheads will nonetheless transport you elsewhere.

Bike the 5.5-mile Lake Trail.

Tour around on two wheels by biking the 5.5-mile Lake Trail , which runs parallel to the Intracoastal Waterway and delivers views of Palm Beach estates on one side and the West Palm Beach skyline on the other. Along the way you'll spot natural wonders including a sprawling kapok tree lovingly nicknamed "Big Tree," as well as the otherworldly coral cut, where coral cliffs tower high on both sides of the passage where North Lake Trail meets Country Club Road. The nondescript barred window cut into the coral along the road — a bit reminiscent of the Bastille — has spawned many an urban legend. (In reality, it's just a water department door. Or so they say.)

Pro tip: If your resort doesn't provide bicycle access as a courtesy — and many do — rentals are available by the hour or by the day at Top Cycle , which also gives private tours of the trail.

Uncover the secrets of Worth Avenue.

While Worth Avenue is an undisputed highlight of Palm Beach, few take time to fully explore the enchanting "vias" that wind around and behind the avenue's high-fashion storefronts. You'll have to dig deeper to uncover Worth Avenue's hidden layer.

Alleys like Via Amore hide garden patios, playful sculptures, and shady sitting areas, while Via Mizner is imbued with historical significance as the former home of famed Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner. You'll even find a tiny Starbucks and a gelato shop if you look hard enough.

On the main drag, smaller, winsome shops like Raptis Rare Books — don't miss its collection of signed first editions by the likes of Benjamin Franklin and J.K. Rowling — are worth tucking into when you tire of all the Louis, Gucci, and Tiffany.

Charter John F. Kennedy’s presidential yacht.

For a new perspective on this notoriously tight-lipped island (and waterfront mansion views you can't get from the hedge-lined streets), explore Palm Beach by water. You can do it in style with up to 70 of your closest friends by chartering the late President John F. Kennedy's own yacht, the famed Honey Fitz, which is stored at Lots of Yachts in West Palm Beach.

Renamed for JFK's grandfather, the Honey Fitz is a 93-foot wooden yacht that has been used by five U.S. presidents since its construction in 1931. A day aboard the Honey Fitz gives cruisers a chance to tour Palm Beach and relive Kennedy's Camelot-era golden days in the same way he would have done.

Shop the Royal Poinciana Plaza.

Considered Worth Avenue's hipper little sister, the Royal Poinciana Plaza is known for having pilates and yoga studios, an organic Celis Produce mini-market, high-end boutiques, the first TooJay's Deli , a wine academy, and more. The plaza has emerged as a hub for Palm Beach's cool kids. Walk its checkerboard-tiled corridors and stop for an espresso at Sant Ambroeus when you tire — there's a wallpapered coffee bar off the dining room.

Visit hush-hush public gardens and lushly cloaked courtyards.

Little-known gardens dot the island — uncrowded havens offering semi-private views of the tropics' flashiest foliage. Fountains, sculptures, and bright-pink bougainvillea-laden pergolas are tucked into The Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden , and a bronze statue of Pan of Rohallion graces the entrance pool at the half-acre Pan's Garden , where 300 species of native trees and wildflowers thrive. At The Brazilian Court Hotel , a discreet enclave dating back to the 1920s, visitors will find one of the most intimate courtyards on the island.

Stone Bridge refurbishment plan goes to State House. Here's where it stands

PORTSMOUTH – The Rhode Island General Assembly in late April voted to further study a bill that would refurbish the Stone Bridge abutment and seek funding to maintain the adjacent “Teddy’s Beach” property.

State Sen. Linda Ujifusa brought a bill forth that would ask the state to refurbish the bridge, a portion of which eroded and collapsed into the Sakonnet River in 2019.

RIDOT installed fencing to close off the property for public use due to safety concerns.

The bill called on RIDOT to seek state, federal and other funds to repair the bridge, as well as funding to clean up and regularly maintain the beach, just south of the abutment.

The state Department of Transportation owns the property.

Locals have complained of littering at Teddy’s Beach and how townspeople can no longer travel over the bridge to the beach, which once was a thoroughfare between Portsmouth and Tiverton.

Reached recently, Ujifusa said that because the work could financially impact other state projects and requires RIDOT funding, it is standard for a bill of this sort to be studied further.

“It doesn’t just slide through,” Ujifusa said, adding that funding for the Stone Bridge project could affect funding for other state projects.

According to Town Administrator Richard Rainer, the town early last year approved a purchase and sale agreement with the RIDOT but backed out because the state would not allow local officials access to the property for inspection. According to reports, that price was $150,000.

Rainer said RIDOT wanted a signed purchase and sale agreement before allowing town officials to conduct an inspection.

RIDOT spokesperson Charles St. Martin III noted that the state traditionally asks for a purchase and sale agreement before further business is conducted.

“Whenever we sell property to anyone, we enter into a purchase and sales agreement with the buyer,” according to  RIDOT spokesman Charles. St. Martin III. “It is a normal and customary process for inspections to happen after that document is signed. The town did not sign the purchase and sales agreement.”

At a February Town Council meeting, the council unanimously  signed a  “resolution to request legislation to effectuate a complete and comprehensive restoration, reconstruction, and refurbishing of the Stone Bridge abutment in Portsmouth,” according to Rainer.

Ujifusa, who represents Portsmouth and Bristol, brought forth the bill.

The bridge was built in 1907. In 1956, the Sakonnet Bridge was first built and took over as the span between Tiverton and Aquidneck Island.

“It remains in a state of serious disrepair and deterioration, is a terrible eyesore on the Park Avenue waterfront," Rainer said in a written release about Stone Bridge. "It poses a significant risk and hazard to navigation, properties on the north end of Portsmouth, and public safety."
