Insider Today

While luxury travel destinations that look flawless on your Instagram feed can be underwhelming ( or downright disappointing ), some companies do successfully give wealthy travelers the high-end experience they're hoping for when they book a trip.

To that end, LTI - Luxury Travel Intelligence (a members-only digital resource for all things luxury travel) recently released its annual ranking of the top luxury hotel brands in the world. Turns out, the consensus on which chains are the best of the best has shifted drastically since the company's last list was released.

LTI's ranking (which focused only on brands with 10 or more properties) is based on 123 "touch points" relating to overall brand performance. The assessment process took place over the course of 12 months.

"It's all about a brand's ability to deliver: its passion, commitment, ethos and values, as well as the quality of its management and staff," LTI said in a release, adding that "continuing investment" in new and existing properties is another important factor.

LTI said that it decided not to adjust its typical ranking algorithm as a result of COVID-19, since "each brand's response is still unfolding."

Here are the world's best luxury hotel brands, ranked in ascending order.

Roar Africa Safari

Travel specialists have never been more essential than they are right now, with their invaluable ability to pivot, re-book and offer advice. We picked 10 standouts in the luxury field from across the world, a directory of those who embody that above-and-beyond spirit essential in the past year.

Christoper Sitwell, Cazenove + Loyd

luxury travel brands

Wilmot-Sitwell has been working in travel for more than three decades. The co-owner of a 16-person London-based agency specializes in long-haul luxury, often to far-flung sites in rural Africa and Asia. The team there spent much of 2020 canceling or postponing trips—most recently, unpicking rescheduled itineraries to the Tokyo Olympics when a ban on foreign spectators was announced.

The firm anticipated today’s conscious-travel concerns from the outset, always focusing on owner-run and locally staffed independent operations, such as preservation outfit Campfire in Zimbabwe. Cazenove + Loyd also offsets the entire carbon cost of its research recces via a partnership with CommuniTree , a 12-square-mile tropical reforestation project in Nicaragua. Clients can easily opt into this, too; anyone whose itinerary swoops through the country can visit the project and personally plant the trees.

Tanya Dalton, Managing Director UK, Greaves

luxury travel brands

Dalton leads the UK office of this India specialist outfitter, which was founded by her Mumbai-born grandfather in 1978 and later run by her mother. With generations’ worth of in-depth experience and exclusive connections at her fingertips, she arranges custom trips as luxe as they are immersive. Depending on their interests, travelers may find themselves granted entrée to private palaces, sacred religious sites and landmarked government buildings; meeting with celebrated curators, authors, artisans, jewelers, chefs or astrologers; or exploring desert wilds while staying at plush mobile camps.

Dalton’s team—45 in Delhi and Mumbai, and 15 in the UK—helped extract some 40 clients from India at the start of the pandemic, as borders closed. Now she’s helping guests plan their return. On her radar currently are safaris to spot India’s rising tiger population, top-end hotel openings in Rajasthan and a new single-suite wooden boat that’s perfect for privately cruising the Ganges, Bhagirathi and Hooghly Rivers.

Jules Maury, Scott Dunn Private

luxury travel brands

Maury runs this offshoot of the UK-based travel firm, focused entirely on bespoke itineraries. Much of her work during the pandemic involved extended stays for home-schooling families who were looking to live and work in a new locale, whether spending two and a half months at Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives or a month in residence at Antigua’s Jumby Bay. Another guest commandeered the five-room Sheldon Chalet in Denali National Park, an ultra-secluded property accessible only by a 45-minute helicopter ride.

The SDP team follows multiple pro-social protocols when it travels and encourages clients to follow suit, including the Pack for a Purpose program, in which visitors pack requested supplies in their luggage for distribution at the destination. It’s laser-focused on ethical practices, too. Animal welfare is a priority, so providers that offer bullfighting or elephant riding are not used, and there’s a pledge that 90 percent of all operators will not provide single-use plastics to guests by the end of 2023.

Deborah Calmeyer, Roar Africa

luxury travel brands

The Zimbabwe-born Calmeyer has carved out a discrete niche as the ultimate elite safari planner, with the ability to pull off near-impossible requests, even during the pandemic. Rwanda’s government requires a negative PCR Covid-19 test for visitors, but offers only the throat-swab version at Kigali airport—a problem for one Roar Africa client, desperate to go gorilla-trekking but phobic about anything touching his throat. Calmeyer set up a protocol change, arranging for a nose swab to be administered instead.

She has offices in Nairobi, Johannesburg and Cape Town, with the HQ in New York, and Roar Africa continued to pay drivers, freelance guides and its staff even during lockdown, as governmental support in situ was scant. Roar Africa supports several social programs, including an all-women anti-poaching academy in Kenya, which has so far graduated almost 30 fully trained rangers, and underwrites a scholarship at a college of tourism in South Africa that trains women to work at local hotels and lodges.

Catherine Heald, Remote Lands

luxury travel brands

Remote Lands’ expertise centers entirely on planning ultra-luxury trips for Americans to Asia, with offices in New York and Bangkok, plus country managers in every locale.

Heald and business partner Jay Tindall try to ensure a positive impression both for their guests and by them, encouraging clients, for example, to fund the digging of a water well for a local family whenever Siem Reap in Cambodia forms part of the itinerary. Conscious of the higher carbon footprint of itineraries that span the continent, the pair deliberately minimize the number of flights, private or commercial.

Last year, a Texas couple who were planning to go solo to Asia to celebrate both his 70th birthday and their 40th wedding anniversary had to postpone, and instead Heald helped them turn their three-week, four-country trip into a reunion with their grandchildren, whom they plan to take along this November.

Beks Ndlovu, Founder of African Bush Camps

luxury travel brands

Ndlovu has maintained momentum, despite the safari industry’s devastating year. The operator and hotelier kept his entire 600-person staff employed while also unveiling Khwai Leadwood, a new high-design lodge in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It’s the latest in his eco-conscious properties; he has rolled out 16 of them in 15 years across three countries, a remarkable achievement. Each has a light footprint, via solar farms and water recycling, while also offering direct support to surrounding communities via the company’s ABC Foundation.

Even amid the logistical and medical constraints of the past year, Ndlovu seamlessly pulled off a recent journey for 14 people to Zimbabwe via private plane. “There was a lot of juggling, but it was well worth it,” says Ndlovu, who advocates for guests to spend their tourism dollars with brands that preserve wilderness areas and empower minorities and locals. “We continue to make the effort in identifying key talent that we can support and help rise to the surface.”

Cedric Reversade, Unique Properties & Events

luxury travel brands

Luxury travel was already tilting toward villa rentals before the pandemic made the idea of privacy, and self-containment, even more appealing. The London- and Paris-based Reversade and business partner Koskas offer discreet access to the world’s best rental homes in hot spots like Saint-Tropez, Ibiza and Capri while also acting as a travel concierge.

Take the California client who had bought a piano nobile on the Grand Canal in Venice, just before the first lockdown—and for whom they managed to secure a visa even when borders were shut. They also arranged excursions in the city, like a day on Burano with the glassblowers and a night visit to San Marco. Or the polo-loving English client who ditched her Chelsea townhouse for a seafront estate in Ibiza they’d wrangled on her behalf as lockdowns loomed; she then took trips around Spain, including lunching with a retired rejoneador from whom she bought two horses to ride at her country estate.

Cari Gray, Gray & Co.

luxury travel brands

Based in Santa Monica, Calif., Canadian expat Gray runs a lean team of about 10 with a particular expertise in active luxury. Take the trip to Argentina and Uruguay which shuttled her guests between cycling spots by private jet. It was due to start just as Argentina shuttered its borders last March, so Gray’s team pivoted, re-booking the group on a similar itinerary in California within 24 hours.

She’s determined that the lavish sums spent by clients truly uplift every destination, especially in developing areas. One pair of travelers sponsored GPS collars on a research project for rescued elephants at a local animal reserve in Namibia and witnessed the process firsthand. And an always recommended pit stop in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco is one of the late Eve Branson’s projects, which employs local women making crafts. It isn’t all do-gooding, though: Gray is renowned for arranging Michelin-caliber chefs to cater alfresco at the end of a day’s hiking.

James Jayasundera, Ampersand Travel

luxury travel brands

Sri Lanka is one of the rare destinations in Asia that have managed to create a program that allows visitors to experience the country during the pandemic, and no one is a better expert to help navigate an itinerary in that new normal than Rome-raised Jayasundera and his five-person, almost two-decade-old firm. Visitors can stay in designated hotels, he explains, and even go sightseeing, as long as they remain in “bio bubbles” to protect the local populace from imported infection.

Jayasundera started early, noting the preferences of each of his 12-strong family as they traveled constantly in his childhood, and has made such attention to detail a hallmark of his commercial operation. Inclusivity is a longtime passion, with a strong presence in the LGBTQ community among both staff and clients, and efforts to use female guides where possible to offset challenges around equality.

Mark Duguid, Carrier

luxury travel brands

The 60-person, Manchester-based Carrier plans less than 5,000 trips per year, allowing it to retain a reputation for flexibility. It’s willing to change itineraries within hours of departure and never charging amending fees. Duguid and his team were well placed, then, for the challenges of last year: See the couple from the UK who seized the chance to travel when permitted during a break in lockdowns, heading impromptu to the Maldives as an add-on to a last-minute visit to Dubai. Carrier recognized the appeal of the outdoors for travelers in the last year, too, and created an exclusive trip to Octola in Finland’s Arctic Circle, a five-star private wilderness reserve where local guides hosted open-fire lunches and ran excursions on husky sleds and snowmobiles.

Duguid reports a surge in so-called revenge spending, noting that the average booking value for 2021 has risen 90 percent year over year, with clients indulging in once-in-a-lifetime trips after lockdown restrictions loosen.

I think Auberge Resort group should take a place in the list and may rank high, their resorts in Mexico n CA are top notch

I really like to stay at Mandarin Oriental, however I have only stayed with them in Bangkok, Taipei and KL. Which MO is your favourite? The ones in Bodrum and Marrakesh look very good.

I believe that are MO’s two top hotels. My favorite is the MO Bodrum (because of its sentational design).

Hi, I think there are few missing names from the list! Worth mentioning: Baccarat, Baglioni, Dusit, Gran Meliá, Quorvus Collection, Rocco Forte Hotels, Steigenberger, and Groups: Relais & Châteaux, Small Luxury Hotels, Leading Hotels of the World and last but not least: Design Hotels. Thank you for the incredible reviews and lists that you put together. love it x

Bangkok MO is excellent

I’m surprised &beyond isn’t on there, keen follower of Conde Nast and they featured heavily in their Top 50 2017 resorts and The Gold List of all time favourite CN resorts.

The list you have presented is amazing, it is now the basis of a lifetime bucket list!

Thank you so much for the source!

rocco forte is a personal favorite

Oetker is a wonderful group of hotels- Bristol Paris and Hotel du Cap Eden Roc in Cap D’Antibes are among the best in the world. Also, Dorchester hotels are top notch, especially the Beverly Hills Hotel, Bel Air, the redone Eden and the Maurice.

This list is way off and is due for an update! I agree with the Top 3 (Aman, FS & St. Regis)

Hotel brands like Auberge is voted # 3 in Travel and Leisure list and Oetker Collection is # 2. I can’t even believe you didn’t list those in the top 44 brands.

My Top 10 (As someone that’s been to the majority of these brands)

1) Aman 2) Four Seasons 3) St. Regis 4) Belmond 5) One & Only 6) Oberoi 7) Taj Hotels 8) Six Senses 9) Rosewood 10) Auberge / Oetker Collection (Tie)

BODRUM very nice

My Top 10: 1. Aman 2. Oetker Collection 3. Six Senses 4. Belmond 5. Mandarin Oriental 6. Auberge 7. Four Seasons 8. Soho House 9. One&Only 10. St. Regis

I also think you should rank Kempinski in Top 15. It has some bad properties for example in China, but there are some absurdly good ones, like Ciragan Palace, Emerald Palace, San Clemente Palace, Villa Rossa, hotels in Cairo and many more.

You must go to MO Hong Kong.

1- Aman 2- Belmond 3- Oetker 4- MO 5- The House Collective (The Upper House, The Middle house, etc) 6- La Réserve (Properties in France and in Switzerland) 7- Rosewood 8- One&Only 9- Peninsula !!! 10- Cheval Blanc 11- Bulgari 12- Six Senses

It’s hard to say which one is the best for me because if find that the design and service for some the brand are better depending on which country you are in. I will say at this moment Four Seasons and Taj Hotels/Sri Lanka rocks when it comes to service for me. Haven’t had the chance to check out Six Senses, Aman or Soneva.

Ritz-Carlton, Park Hyatt, Mandarin Oriental, Rosewood, Four Seasons, Waldorf Astoria, St Regis , Raffles, Regent , Capella, Jumeirah

there should be some boutique hotels small but lux like villa243 jaipur india , it s 12 room property and very luxury with butler service ,and so personalized.

I am surprised to find the Soneva Resorts down at spot # 13. I would have guessed that they would be high on the list. How did you rate them?

Without knowing it, I imagine that the order in which the different resorts appear in the survey, has to do with the price. Eg the 3 Soneva resorts are nor the cheapest. What´s your comment on that?

Surprised Relais et Chateau not on your list! But great list nevertheless! Aman would top my list as well.

I think the Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts are top notch too and need a mention here for true Indian hospitality!!!

I love Ritz Carlton,Park Hyatt,Four Seasons,Rosewood,Mandarin Oriental,Waldorf Astoria,Capella,Bulgari. This idea is solely base on the hotel in east asia as their interior design and the standard of construction like facility and hardware are much much much more better than their counterparts in northern America and Europe. For instance, if you check the same brand like Ritz Carlton New York and Ritz Carlton Nanjing, you will find there is a huge gap between them especially when it comes to interior design, the size of the room as well as the different level of brand of hardware they are using.

Add huvafen fushi please this place is wonderful

If it's good enough for Logan Roy & Co., it's certainly good enough for the rest of us. As fans of Succession already know, the members of TV's most dysfunctional billionaire clan are partial to subtle markers of extreme wealth—and Carl Friedrik is their choice luggage. And for good reason: understated, sleek, and a perfect way to transport all that Loro Piana cashmere.

T&C 's Leena Kim is also a fan and calls the suitcase an " excellent travel companion ." She writes, "It's quite lightweight, even for a (German-engineered) polycarbonate shell; the wheels have proved worthy of harsh urban terrain, like the cobblestoned streets of Rome; nearly an inch of expansion power means I can squeeze in a few more stuffed Paravel packing cubes ; and that front laptop pocket gives this model a serious edge over its competitors. But my favorite part? The butterfly TSA locks, especially for the way they close with a satisfying click."

One reviewer writes: "Makes travelling a breeze. Elegant and simple design, and the front pocket fits my laptop and two passports perfectly. Would absolutely recommend."

Material: Aluminum

Dimensions: 21.7" H x 15" W x 9.6" D

Weight: 9.5 lbs

Lightweight but built to last, Rimowa's aluminum suitcase is so coveted for good reason. But the 126-year-old German brand's mastery of the hardy metal happened by accident—in the 1930s, a fire destroyed most of the materials in Rimowa's factory. All that remained? Aluminum.

Kim is also fan of Rimowa's suitcases and calls its carry-on "perfect for long weekend summer trips, to really commit to the carry-on life, in all seasons."

Dimensions: 21.7" x 15.8" x 9.1"

Weight: 10lbs

Bric's Bellagio 2.0 30" Spinner Trunk

Lake Como-based Bric's has found famous fans in the likes of Amal Clooney and Kate Middleton. The Bellagio collection especially embodies all that is great about the 72-year-old brand: fine Italian craftsmanship, beautiful details, and throwback elegance.

One shopper on the internet says : "This carry-on suitcase is a game-changer!The polycarbonate shell is lightweight but tough. The multi-stage telescopic handle is comfortable to use, and the double deck compartments keep my stuff organized."

Material: Makrolon Polycarbonate

Dimensions: 21"W x 30"H x 11"D

Weight: 12lbs

As far as status symbol suitcases go, none can rival Louis Vuitton luggage—the 170-year-old brand has its roots in luxury trunks after all. This perennial classic can also be customized in a variety of ways, whether you want to add stripe details, change up the colors, or monogram with your initials.

Material: Canvas

Dimensions: 13.8" x 7.9"

Weight: 6.2lbs

Since its inception in 1975, Tumi has become practically synonymous for luxury travel goods. Its 19 Degree Aluminum case boats a durable aluminum construction with fluid-looking contours, two TSA integrated combination locks, telescoping handle system, and a massive interior compartment for 7+ days of outfits.

One shopper raves: "The 19 Degree Aluminum series is very classy, it looks great when checking in especially as a Million Miler Diamond Status on Delta, these luggage just sets you apart from the rest. I use my 19 degree Aluminum Extended Packing Case and my 19 Degree Carryon as a pair every time I travel internationally. I have peace of mind because this luggage series is very tough and protects my precious belongings on to my destination."

Dimensions: 30.5" x 20.5" x 11.0"

Weight: 16.1lbs

Since 2005, SteamLine has put a fresh, contemporary spin on timeless vintage silhouettes. Delightfully feminine and incredibly tough, this carry on features an elegant white and tan body that opens to a lush botanical print of foliage, flowers and birds.

Material: Printed Japanese Fibreboard/Leather

Dimensions: 20" x 14.5" x 6.5"

Weight: 8.8lbs

Ghurka founder Marley Hodgson was inspired by military campaign gear when launching his luggage brand in 1975. That pretty much ensures each piece, handcrafted by artisans, is of the highest quality and is meant to last forever, developing a lovely aged patina as time goes on.

One reviewer writes: "I gave this to my husband as a gift. He absolutely loved it. At first he wouldn’t use it for long trips because he was worried he would scuff it and it’s so beautiful. Now, however, he takes it everywhere because he can’t be without it. It’s a perfect size. It’s great for a short trip as a solo piece. It’s elegant and the leather is gorgeous, and the interior is phenomenal as well. I am very pleased. "

Material: Leather

Dimensions: 17.25" W x 10" H x 9" D

If Rimowa showcases the best of German luggage design and Globe-Trotter the best of England's, T. Anthony is quintessentially American: Chic in its simplicity of design, practical and durable, and a trusted travel staple for generations of moneyed elite, among them the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the Reagans, Jackie Kennedy, and Marilyn Monroe. Spacious and lightweight, this duffle is understated luxury at its finest.

T&C 's Deputy Feature Director Adam Rathe is a fan.

Material: Nylon/Leather

Dimensions: 22” x 12” x 11”

Observe Dior's iconic Oblique jacquard pattern in a functional waterproof fabric that withstands any elements you may run into while on your adventures—the suitcase's relaxed shape emphasizes its all-purpose capability.

Material: Technical Jacquard

Dimensions: 13" L x 18.5" H x 5.5" W

Weight: 6lbs

A suitcase you'll have no trouble finding in baggage claim, this Gucci piece, featuring the luxury house's iconic double G insignia and red/green web, is constructed with durable canvas and comes with 360-degree wheels, retractable handles, and an exterior pocket that makes navigating through any airport a breeze.

Dimensions: 17.7" W x 25.2" H x 11.8" D

Weight: 14.2 lbs

Porsche Design Roadster 30" Expandable Spinner Luggage

Roadster 30" Expandable Spinner Luggage

Leave it to the manufacturer of some of the world's best high-performance sports cars to master an aerodynamic suitcase that is sleek, functional, durable, and, most importantly, super lightweight.

One shopper writes: "I bought this for my recent overseas travel across different countries. It performed perfectly in less than ideal circumstances. Baggage handlers do what they do, the roads and sidewalks with rocks and broken or nonexistent concrete didn't faze this luggage. Lightweight with expandable main compartment. Spinner wheels move smoothly and handles felt sturdy. "

luxury luggage

The best luxury suitcases are built to last, convenient to travel with, and designed with form and function in mind.

When shopping for designer luggage, look for options made with aluminum or polycarbonate or premium leather—these materials tend to be heavy duty and water-resistant.

It's what's on the inside that counts, too. A great luxury travel bag should feature an extra roomy main compartment, space-saving compression pads, interior zippers for additional storage.

Don't forget the functional details, either: Look for options reinforced with TSA locks for extra protection.

6 Luxury Travel Trends That Will Be Huge in 2023

From hot new destinations to putting art ahead of food (really!), welcome to a fabulous new year of journeys near and far.

Japan, Italy, and Other Trending Destinations

hirosaki castle

“Japan!” says Jack Ezon, founder and managing partner at New York-based Embark Beyond , when he considers 2023’s hottest destinations. “Pre-COVID it was on one of the steepest growth trajectories; now people are clamoring to return,” he says, adding that one of the world’s hottest ski destinations for 2023 is Niseko on the country’s north island of Hokkaido.

Also hot: “Italy beyond the obvious,” he says: “Look at the regions of Piedmont, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna to pop up as the new Tuscany, fueled by great new properties like Casa di Langa .” Ezon also names Montenegro back on the hot list, thanks to the new One&Only Portonovi drawing eyes (and yachts) to this corner of the Med, Peru trending for foodies and outdoor adventurers, Tanzania topping safari destinations, and the beautiful new Kisawa Sanctuary pulling focus to Mozambique as “the post-safari retreat du jour.”

The Rise of Solo Travel

young man in hammock contemplating the sea

When it comes to grown-up luxury travelers, the allure of going solo has never been greater. Virtuoso recently reported that among its travelers aged 65+, interest in single travel went from 4 percent in 2019 to 18 percent in 2022. And the offerings for solo explorers just get better and better, whether it’s the Solo Package (literally!) at Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives or a regenerative weekend of yoga, sound baths, hydro therapies, spa treatments, and more at Shou Sugi Ban House in the Hamptons .

Private Yachts Seas the Day

luxury cruises m y kontiki wayri

While a boat of one’s own (even if for only a week) has always been a hallmark of luxury travel, the world of private yacht excursions has never been more creative—or alluring. Cases in point: Kontiki Expeditions’ superyacht plying the Ecuador coast , and EYOS Expeditions , which offers superyacht excursions in Antarctica.

“Many people just didn’t realize it was possible to go to Antarctica via a private yacht,” says EYOS CEO Ben Lyons, “but it has travelers thinking how they can experience a destination in new ways,” including a fully customized experience and a boatload—as it were—of privacy.

For those who prefer their adventure in a glass, Belmond will debut Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne in May 2023: a restored river barge plying the region’s waterways in partnership with Maison Ruinart, the world’s oldest Champagne house. On offer: a weeklong private charter starting at €82,000 (approximately $79,500).

Embracing the Off Season

large african elephant against acacia tree and safari vehicles in background

After the pandemic travel pause, the surge in luxury travel to beloved destinations like the Amalfi Coast and Greece pushed demand into the shoulder seasons like never before, and hotels responded by opening earlier in the spring and welcoming guests often all the way to Christmas—a move that seems to be sticking.

“At first, travelers were so anxious to get back out there as soon as destinations were opening up, they were ready to go right away, even if it wasn’t the typical season for that destination,” says travel advisor Beth Washington, founder of Washington, D.C.-based travel agency Getaway Guild .

Washington points also to African safaris now stretching beyond classic seasons of winter for South Africa and July through October travel for East Africa: “Travelers can have wonderful game viewing on safari most of the year if you work with a safari specialist,” she says. If the pandemic taught us anything, Washington says, “it’s that the ability to travel is not promised, and there is no time like the present to take that dream trip rather than wait for peak season.”

Art Is the New Food

art basel 2013

Travel centered around art is poised to replace culinary travel as a leading luxury travel trend, says Jack Ezon, who points to Arles, Berlin, Havana, Paris, Milan, Miami, Mexico City, Marfa, Cape Town, and Marrakech as top destinations.

And the hotels! Airelles Le Grand Contrôle recently opened in the heart of France’s Château de Versailles and offers private tours and exclusive access to the Domaine de Trianon and the gardens. In the Scottish highlands, the Swiss gallerists Manuela and Iwan Wirth have created a stunning hotel-gallery hybrid at The Fife Arms (including more than 14,000 works including high-impact Picassos, Freuds, and Richters). In Marrakesh, Royal Mansour offers guests complimentary tickets to the stunning Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech . And creative art partnerships are the new Michelin-starred chef: In Italy, Belmond has joined with acclaimed Galleria Continua to create MITICO , four garden-based art installations (including Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou’s stunning Les Routes du Paradis at Grand Hotel Timeo on Sicily) that will return anew in 2023. “Whether it’s cities with art festivals, cities with an art scene, or art shopping trips,” sums Ezon, “art is definitely the new food.”

Traveling to Gather

tourists on camels in the desert at sunset

While solo travel is surging, particularly for the 65+ set, creative getaways for groups is top of mind at myriad luxury destinations, particularly among younger travelers (according to Virtuoso, solo travel interest among the 18-34 set dropped from 12 percent in 2019 to 6 percent in 2022).

“Beyond multi-gen trips, people are flocking around the world in groups,” says Ezon. “Groups of ladies. Groups of guys. Groups of a half dozen couples. Friends who like botany, fitness instructors bringing their fans to some remote place for fitness. Divorced ladies out for revenge. You name the affinity; people are traveling together. We are even seeing five and six families traveling together.” With a surge in villa offerings at hotels and resorts as well as private yacht charters, it’s never been more easier—or more fabulous—to gather together, the world over.

IHG’s Upper Luxury Portfolio Recognized By Top Travel Editors

Nine top titles awarded to IHG properties – A total of four Six Senses and two Regent hotels are featured in Condé Nast Traveler Hot List, Travel + Leisure’s It List and AFAR’s Best New Hotels.

IHG Partners with China UnionPay

24 APRIL 2024, LONDON: IHG Hotels & Resorts is celebrating the significant achievements of its upper luxury portfolio today following the announcement of three of the industry’s most coveted awards selected by leading travel editors. A collective showcase of the crème de la crème of the global hospitality industry, Condé Nast Traveler Hot List , AFAR’s Best New Hotels of 2024 and the Travel + Leisure ‘It List’ have awarded nine notable titles to properties within IHG’s Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio, now the second largest in the world.

A summary of the inclusions are as follows:

Since 2015, IHG Hotels & Resorts has doubled its Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio to become recognised as one of the industry’s most innovative players. Strategic acquisitions and new brand launches over the past five years have transformed IHG’s portfolio from 1 to 6 brands, spanning 499 properties and some 114,570 rooms in 80 countries. IHG is now the second largest in the sector by number of rooms and hotels, whilst continuing to drive high-value growth at an impressive pace.

Since its acquisition in 2018, IHG has embarked on a carefully curated reimagining of Regent to reclaim its place in the hearts of the modern luxury travellers. A legendary innovative luxury brand since 1971, Regent reimagines modern hospitality by sparking fresh perspectives across its growing number of hand-selected hotels and resorts. Several flagship openings in 2023 ushered in a new era for the brand with the grand return of Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel in March following a two-year redevelopment, closely followed by Regent Hong Kong’s return to Victoria Harbour in June that year. Both properties received recognition within this year’s awards announcement.

Six Senses is world-renowned for providing the ultimate luxury wellness and sustainable experience. The brand is experiencing exciting growth with some 42 hotels in the pipeline which will almost double today’s existing portfolio. Part of IHG since 2019, last year saw the opening of Six Senses Rome, its first urban expression of the brand and Six Senses Crans-Montana and Six Senses Southern Dunes. All three properties proudly receive recognition by the top global editors overseeing this year’s lists.

The spotlight now turns to the 37 th annual Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards with more than 200 IHG properties shortlisted and gathering votes. The longest running recognition in the travel industry, Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards is voted for by global readers of the magazine worldwide. • Introduction: The Future of Luxury Wellness

Everywhere from dazzling cities to remote exotic destinations, luxury travel is experiencing a healthy boom.

Wellness tourism is now the fastest-growing segment in the travel industry, driven by travelers’ aspirations for a wellness lifestyle. Wellness tourism grew at a healthy rate of 6.5 percent every year since 2015, twice as fast as the tourism industry as a whole (3.2%). [1] In 2017, travelers took 830 million wellness trips – 139 million more than in 2015.

We expect the global wellness tourism sector to be worth $681 billion in 2018. And this is just the start. The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) predicts that the wellness economy will continue to grow over the coming years, reaching $919.4 billion by 2022.

Wellness travel is trending as more affluent consumers incorporate wellness into their lifestyles. From travel and hospitality to fashion , beauty , and fitness , wellness tourism creates opportunities for all businesses to infuse elements of wellness into their offerings to capture travelers’ spending.

Defining wellness tourism: What is wellness travel?

Wellness travel is“ travel that allows the traveler to maintain, enhance or kick-start a healthy lifestyle, and support or increase one’s sense of well-being ”, according to the Wellness Tourism Association.

In other words, wellness travel is about prioritizing one’s physical, mental, and spiritual well-being .

Wellness travel has traditionally been associated with luxury spa holidays. But as self-care has evolved into a daily goal, wellness travel is now taking many different forms and incorporating things like digital detox, healthier food options, fitness concierge, sleep enhancement, and more.

Similarly to the shift that we have observed in luxury retail , experiences are what lure people.

The wellness travel sector is driven by two types of wellness travelers :

  • Primary wellness travelers: wellness-minded travelers who are motivated by wellness and whose primary trip purpose is to improve their well-being;
  • Secondary wellness travelers: travelers that are seeking to maintain wellness or engage in ad hoc wellness experiences during their regular leisure and business travels but not actively seeking an immersive wellness vacation.

The majority of wellness travels is currently taken by secondary wellness travelers, who account for 89 percent of wellness tourism trips and 86 percent of expenditures in 2017. [1]

The Wellness Premium: Wellness travelers spend on average more than other tourists

Wellness tourism equates to high-yield tourism . Luxury wellness travelers are now willing to pay a premium for healthier hotel stays and wellness products and services while traveling.

Wellness tourism is booming in emerging markets

Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa are emerging as wellness destinations of choice, accounting for 57 percent of the increase in wellness trips since 2015.

Europe and North America currently dominate in terms of the absolute number of wellness trips and expenditures. But Asia is emerging as the growth engine both in terms of wellness trips taken and revenues generated. Wellness trips in Asia grew by 33 percent in the past two years, reaching 258 million trips annually in 2017. China and India are the two fastest-growing wellness tourism markets worldwide, adding over 12 million and 17 million wellness trips , respectively, between 2015 and 2017.

7 wellness trends for luxury hotels

As wellness grows mainstream, luxury travel brands, hotels, in particular, are looking for ways to incorporate wellness into every aspect of the guest experience.

Successful tourism marketing campaigns will tap into these seven critical trends to appeal to wellness-driven customers:

  • Transformative wellness travel is the new luxury
  • Healthy eating, community wellness, sustainable practices
  • Extreme travel experiences for wellness warriors
  • Disconnecting with digital detox break
  • Female-only wellness travel grows more powerful
  • Staying fit on the go
  • Architectural design wellness

1. Beyond experiential travel, transformative wellness travel is the new luxury

Luxury travel today has gone deeper than experiential travel. The ultimate luxury now lies in the transformational value of the experience and, ultimately, personal fulfillment.

So-called transformative travel — a travel experience that empowers people to undergo some self-reflection and make meaningful, lasting changes in their lives — has become a prominent demand from today’s high-end travelers. Luxury travelers are demanding transformative experiences that foster emotional, life-changing wellness journeys.

Wellness travellers increasingly demand true brain, body and soul shake-ups – intense personal growth rather than just pampering – and destinations are creatively heeding the call.” Susie Ellis, GWI CEO

In order to appeal to luxury travelers and set themselves apart from the experience-saturated market, brands must clearly portray the transformational, self-actualizing value they can provide or facilitate.

The key pillars of transformational experiences include:

  • Shift from ego to self-actualization: Fantasy avatars, theatre, gaming, and role-playing emerge as powerful ways to fire up emotions and ultimately incite a personal transformation.
  • Immersive storytelling: Using the power of epic storylines and casting the traveler as the “pilgrim in an immersive story,” brands are leading the traveler in a multi-chapter, story-based wellness journey. [2]
  • From passive experience to active journey: Forward-looking travel brands are reimagining the spa experience as an active, nature-roaming journey — mixing up treatments with experiences such as fitness, connection with nature, local and cultural immersion, and healthy food.

Travelers no longer want disconnected programs, classes, treatments, amenities, and itineraries. The new trend is about innovating with true circuits of integrated experiences that lead travelers through “ an emotional, even theatrical, saga of transformation .”

Trend in action: Six Senses Bhutan, multi-property wellness epic circuit

Six Senses Bhutan immerses travellers in a narrative-based wellness pilgrimage in Bhutanese values and culture. Guests journey across five intimate lodges (from Paro to Thimphu to Punakha to Gangtey to Bumthang) in diverse topographies, climate zones and cultural areas, where they discover – chapter by chapter – programming based on the five pillars of Bhutan’s unique Gross National Happiness Index.

2. Healthy eating, community wellness, sustainable practices

Sustainability and social responsibility are key to the wellness tourism industry. Luxury wellness travelers are interested in both their own well-being but also their impact on the overall well-being of communities around them.

An increasing number of individuals now want healthy, organic, local food and choose to be vegan or vegetarian. The popularity of the “farm-to-table” concept has exploded in recent years. What was once seen as the province of hippies is now in demand and more mainstream. And consumers don’t mind paying a premium to meet these values.

What does it mean for luxury hotels :

Luxury hotels and resorts should look at sourcing local produce, supporting local farmers, and implementing sustainable practices. Luxury hotels can also consider adding a selected number of healthy options to their minibars and on their menus (such as raw, vegan, gluten-free, or simply low-calorie).

3. Extreme travel experiences for wellness warriors

Taking extreme challenges, treatments, and experiences to produce wellness benefits is gaining popularity. A prime example is UK luxury travel company Black Tomato, which takes affluent travelers out of their comfort zones on tailor-made trips (in a selected terrain, whether polar, jungle, desert, mountain, or coastal) that take months to prepare for the mental and physical challenges and cost upwards of $30,000.

4. Disconnecting with digital detox break

More travel offerings will explicitly be about cutting digital connections and logging off from the world.

Mandarin Oriental spas, for example, offer a Digital Wellness experience where no electronic interruptions are allowed, including during the check-in silence ceremony.

5. Female-only wellness travel grows more powerful

More wellness travel will be aimed at women’s physical, mental and spiritual empowerment.

From challenging adventure travel for the solo woman to female-only transformative retreats to heal emotionally post-grief or trauma (like post-divorce/break-up retreats).

6. Staying fit on the go

Many wellness travelers wish to stay fit while traveling. In light of the recent demand for increased wellness options while on the road, hotels are investing in new fitness equipment and technologies.

Fitness retreats—luxury vacations set around an itinerary full of workouts, wellness experiences, and feel-good foods—are also expanding. From ClassPass to W Hotels to Equinox, big lifestyle brands are entering this fitness tourism sphere.

7. Architectural design wellness

Another growing trend in the luxury wellness travel industry is wellness architecture. The idea is to design beautiful but also comfortable, functional and sustainable spaces with materials addressing both physical and mental wellness.

How luxury hotels are investing in wellness

As affluent travelers take wellness seriously, luxury hotels follow suit. The concept of wellness is taking center stage at some of the world’s most exclusive hotels.

luxury wellness travel six senses luxe digital

Focused on various wellness pillars, including nutrition, sleep health, movement, holistic treatments, meditation, and mindfulness, Six Senses Integrated Wellness is a great example of how luxury hotels can infuse wellness in the guest experience.

Sleep With Six Senses initiative is about providing guests with natural, hand-made mattresses and cotton bedding with built-in motion detectors to track how guests sleep, allowing hotel staff to then develop customized therapies based on the individual sleep data. See our round-up of the best luxury mattresses to get an idea of the brands they’re working with.

A bespoke wellness screening using smart technology also enables Six Senses’ in-house wellness experts to personalize one’s wellness program – such as spa treatments, nutritional advice, and fitness and wellness activities the guest should do at the property.

Six Senses also offers low-sugar, low-gluten, low-soy, and low-lactose meal options, which are as clean, sustainable, and locally sourced as possible.

Westin’s Six Pillars of Well-being (Sleep Well, Eat Well, Move Well, Feel Well, Work Well, and Play Well) is a great example of how wellness is increasingly being integrated into every aspect of the hotel experience.

luxury wellness travel stay well marriott luxe digital

Marriott also offers affluent travelers the opportunity to sleep in a “ Stay Well ” hotel room, featuring air purifiers, a dawn simulator to minimize jet lag and sleep disruption, as well as personalized circadian mood lighting, aromatherapy, and Stay Well Shower Infuser that reduces chlorine to keep hair and skin soft and smooth, and more. Guests can also download a Stay Well Mobile App offering a guided meditation podcast, a Jet Lag tool, and sleep, nutrition, and stress-management programs.

Final thoughts

Affluent travelers are increasingly looking at hotels and luxury travel brands that infuse well-being into the very essence of their experiences and elevate them to be at their personal best.

Keeping a high-touch, personal approach while adapting to the increasing wellness expectations of today’s affluent travelers will be key to survival for luxury travel brands.

As wellness-minded travelers become more sophisticated, they are demanding a more integrated, multidimensional approach to wellness – from food to mood, sleep to movement – at properties and destinations.

Luxury hotels will need to consider everything from refinements of their amenities to clean restaurant menu options, wellness concierges, in-room entertainment content, natural toiletries, affiliations with other health businesses, and more.

There are many different types of RVs around, some more basic than others. I like RVing with comfort and a bit of luxury too, as it makes for a better time out on the road! Finding the best luxury travel trailers may sound difficult, but they do exist, and if you have the budget, it’s possible to find the rig of your dreams for sure!

Our comprehensive guide to the best luxury travel trailers should provide a key insight into exactly what these types of impressive rigs are capable of, and which ones are best suited to you and your needs. If you’ve just started out RVing, try not to be put off by all the trailer options available! It’s simple to narrow down to the exact type of vehicle you need for all your RVing plans.

Let’s get started, and enjoy some of the luxurious options on this travel trailer roundup!

What Is A Luxury Travel Trailer?

A luxury travel trailer is a type of trailer that’s manufactured by almost all trailer brands. These luxury options are offered as their own distinct models, and these models include many upgraded and high-quality features not normally offered in lower-priced models.

It can be anything from higher-end interior design to more features included in the price than most bargain models. You may be paying for more technology throughout the rig, or more durable and stable materials throughout your trailer .

A luxury travel trailer always has a higher upfront cost, but it’s a great option for those hoping to camp in comfort and style. Many luxury travel trailers have the feel of a traditional home, and this is appealing to a wide range of RVers!

What To Look For In A Luxury Travel Trailer?

Shopping for a luxury travel trailer can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know quite what you’re looking for yet. Here’s a short list of potential things to keep an eye out for as you begin your search!

Floor Plan Or Layout

Your rig’s overall floor plan and layout are a huge part of shopping for a travel trailer. You may not know what you need at first, but start your considerations here: are you shopping for a travel trailer for your family, or just you and your significant other ?

Many travel trailers have multiple floor plan options, especially luxury rigs. Some are more customizable than others, with nonstandard features like theatre seating and bunk beds able to be added to your overall total.

Your layout will affect your overall camping experience, especially if you would like your trailer to have room for the whole family. Would you like a master suite with a closing door? How about minimal stairs so Grandpa and Grandma can safely navigate your rig?

No matter your desired layout, there’s a travel trailer to meet those needs. It may take some time to find it, but you can always be in contact with your trailer manufacturer about your desires. A convenient floor plan is number one in my book!

Bathroom Options

Choosing a luxury travel trailer with a bathroom isn’t difficult, but finding a bathroom to suit particular wants and needs may be harder than you think. Some luxury rigs are outfitted with standard-sized bathrooms, and some may even have bathtubs!

If you are traveling with a group, you may want a travel trailer that has two bathrooms onboard , another possibility for you to consider. If you and your partner want your own master suite with another bathroom for the rest of your guests, this is an option with some luxury floor plans.

Most luxury travel trailers have dry baths instead of wet baths , meaning you won’t have any trouble having separate features rather than just one room with a showerhead in it. There are many layouts that feature a separate toilet area, which can be helpful for many passengers.

Luxury rigs may also offer special bathroom features such as heated floors and towel racks, as well as skylights and double vanities. The sky’s the limit when it comes to luxury rigs- well, that and your budget!

Building Materials

Most travel trailers are built with reliable and durable materials. However, some are better than others, and luxury RVs should be built to last. Choosing an RV brand that’s known for its reliable building materials is a good place to start.

Choosing an RV with long-lasting building materials is always a good idea, as this extends your overall investment. You may have a certain material in mind, such as aluminum or fiberglass. Both come with their own pros and cons.

You should always look for a rig with high-quality insulation, no matter where you plan on camping. Many luxury RVs have reliable insulation for both warm and cold weather applications, and some will even have heated floor and heated holding tank options for extreme cold.

Standard VS Optional Features

One of the most time-consuming processes of purchasing a new RV? Deciding what features you would like to add on both the inside and outside of your rig!

There are always standard features on any RV, but these features will vary depending on the model type as well as the manufacturer of your rig. Luxury rigs often have more features available standard than other lower-priced RVs.

Many optional features have to do with the available technology on your rig, such as Bluetooth or wireless capabilities, as well as the internet. You may also have off-road or boondocking options, such as solar panels and a higher chassis.

If you plan on living in your rig as a full-timer, would you like access to laundry facilities in your rig? How about a chef’s kitchen? There are many features to consider before making your final decision, but there’s definitely a rig out there for you!

Warranty Options

If you are investing in a luxury travel trailer, finding a brand that offers a comprehensive and useful warranty may be high on your list. That’s why knowing your warranty options before you buy is important for any RVer, new or old!

Some rigs may have multiple warranties, some for structure, chassis, and tires, and others may have interior or electric warranty options. Your luxury rig deserves the best protection and should be backed up by a reliable warranty.

Any RV manufacturer should be upfront regarding their available warranties, but you should also be prepared to ask them any questions that you may have regarding your desired rig. Your safety and investment should be a priority to any RV brand!

Good Brands Of Luxury Travel Trailers

Speaking of RV brands, what might some good and reliable luxury travel trailer brands be? Let’s go over some of my favorite choices together.

One of the oldest travel trailer brands on this list, Airstream is known for its trademark appearance. These silver bullets have been gracing campgrounds and highways since the 70s, and they are making them better than ever before.

If you’re looking for an aluminum travel trailer , Airstream is one of your best options. Their price points are on the more affordable end of luxury, and their history and customer satisfaction simply can’t be beaten.

With enough floor plans to make you dizzy, Keystone offers a decent number of luxury rigs, all with features that will make you feel right at home. Started in 1996, Keystone is a company that stands for maximum features without a high price tag.

You’ll have plenty of choices to make if you go with a Keystone, and I consider this a huge positive when it comes to RV shopping. Keystone wants you to have exactly what you want, without breaking the bank!

Grand Design

While a relatively new company, Grand Design has quickly risen through the ranks of reliable luxury travel trailer brands. Started in 2012, Grand Design committed to becoming a resource for RVers across the nation.

Their primary goal? To keep in touch with RVers as they journey, Grand Design welcomes any and all feedback regarding their rigs in order to keep making the best and longest-lasting rigs out there.

A division of Forest River RVs, Palomino is a great choice for a luxury RV. While they don’t make very many rigs, each one is specially manufactured with the consumer in mind, and Forest River’s reliable construction is at the heart of all of their RVs.

Palomino RVs are designed with comfort and traditional home living in mind. They have many features inside of their rigs that give each one a unique and homey touch. Plus, there are plenty of floor plans to choose from so that you can satisfy the whole family!

One of the most popular RV brands in the business, Jayco makes an RV suitable for any and everyone. From lightweight toy haulers to Class A’s, Jayco has a rig that suits your sensibilities- and did I mention they have a great selection of luxury travel trailers too?

Jayco is known for its reliable and industry-setting durability, as well as their attention to detail. They use custom woodwork in most of their RVs, as well as stone and tile work that could be found in a traditional home.

What To Consider Before Purchasing A Luxury Travel Trailer?

From brands to layout requirements, there is so much to consider before purchasing a luxury travel trailer. What else should you keep in mind while shopping? Read on…

How Many People Can Sleep Comfortably?

Before you get too ahead of yourself, take a moment to consider how many people you are planning on camping with at any given time. While you may not know this number right off the bat, it is important that you have enough sleeping areas for your immediate family .

Most luxury rigs offer many sleeping arrangements and options, but it is important to get a large enough rig for everyone to feel comfortable. If it is just you and your partner, finding a smaller RV will be no problem.

However, if you have a family of five or even more than that, finding a larger luxury rig should be a consideration for you. There are usually different layouts that support this, and sleeping arrangements can be found in the form of bunk beds and fold-out sleeping areas.

Luxury Features And Options

We’ve already touched on this but you should keep in mind what luxury features and options you may be looking for. Are you hoping for a spacious bathroom or a residential kitchen? What about a fireplace or walk-around king bed?

No matter what you are looking for, there’s bound to be a rig out there that has it. It may take some searching, but you should be able to find what you are looking for so long as you know what features you desire most!

Tow Vehicle Capacity

If you are shopping for a luxury travel trailer and you already own a vehicle that you plan on towing with, it is important for you to learn your tow vehicle’s capacity.

There are many different weights and numbers to learn when you are first learning how to tow, and it is important to never tow an RV that weighs more than your vehicle’s towing capacity. A 30-foot travel trailer may weigh far more than you think, especially once it is full!

Many luxury rigs are also heavy, depending on their contents and design. Most RV manufacturers assume you will have a tow vehicle that can handle the weight, so keep this in mind when you are shopping (especially if you already own a tow vehicle).

While luxury goods come at a high price tag, having a realistic budget in mind before you start shopping is important. RVs can cost more than you think, especially if you plan on adding many non-standard features or accessories.

Not only will the RV manufacturers have their opinions about add-ons, but you will also find that RVs need a lot of gadgets and accessories so that you can safely travel, park, and hitch up. You may wish to purchase reliable wheel chocks or additional stabilizers .

Many luxury RVs have extras and more perks than a more modest model, but it is always important to stick to your budget. The last thing you want is to overspend and then not have enough money to travel!

How Often The RV Will Be Used

Buying a luxury RV is a joy and an exciting time- the last thing anyone wants is to spend the money on such a nice rig and then never use it.

Are you planning a luxury RV purchase, but only so you can tow your travel trailer around twice a year? Or are you prepared to live in luxury full-time? No matter the amount, it may be important to consider how often you will use your travel trailer before purchasing one.

Some luxury rigs have full-timers in mind; others are simpler and less expensive, meaning you don’t have to feel as bad about not taking it out every single weekend. If you plan to use your rig often, think about that before making a final decision.

Length And Weight

Just like you shouldn’t purchase a rig that is too heavy for your tow vehicle, you should consider the overall length and weight of your luxury travel trailer a decisive factor before purchasing. Why might this be, especially since you could buy something that’s big and heavy?

Well, owning a heavy and long trailer can be more difficult to control on the road , and the longer the rig, the more issues you will have when it comes time to park and camp with it. Some RV parks and campsites have length limits to their rigs- that’s the last thing you need after towing all day!

Choosing a luxury rig means you are getting a well-built and well-appointed RV, no matter the length and weight. Consider where you plan on traveling, how many people are coming with you, and your overall towing experience before making your final purchase.

Boondocking Capabilities

Speaking of knowing where you plan on traveling, dry camping or boondocking is all the rage right now. If you plan on unplugging and boondocking in your luxury travel trailer, you should make sure that the rig you are looking at has such capabilities.

For example, you may wish to add more solar panels via the RV manufacturer, or even an extra battery built for boondocking . There are larger holding tank options as well, or even off-road packages for the adventurer in you!

The Best Luxury Travel Trailers

I’ve made you wait long enough. Surely you have a good idea of what you are looking for in a luxury travel trailer, from the optional features to the interior design. Now let’s take a look at some of my top picks for the best luxury travel trailers.

Best Overall: Jayco Eagle

While every RV has its foibles, Jayco has proven decade after decade their rigs are reliable, perfect for resale, and, most importantly, luxurious. The Jayco Eagle is no exception.

Eagle is one of the longest-running, most successful RVs on the market and continues to be one of the most popular in its class year after year. Equipped with the very best features and full of innovation, the Eagle makes for a downright luxurious experience to transform any adventure.

The latest edition of this classic travel trailer features redesigned bathrooms, a smart TV upgrade, and a new solar power option which I think is an awesome option, making this rig more suitable for boondocking and wild camping. The mandatory luxury package features some impressive additions, such as a second power awning with dimmable LED lighting and a second 15,000 BTU “Whisper Quiet” A/C unit.

Both of these add an extra high-end touch to this Jayco trailer, and help make things far more comfortable in summer when the sun is beaming down! Every Jayco trailer comes with their patented JAYCOMMAND “Smart RV” system to make things easier when out on the road. The luxury package continues, offering an LED fireplace with a 5,000 BTU electric space heater, a clean Drinking Water System, as well as ample solar prep.

I’m drawn to the kitchen as it features a 21 cu. ft. residential refrigerator along with solid-surface countertops matched with a bamboo sink cover and strainer. Together, these create a sleek kitchen aesthetic that makes me want to get cooking! I also like the spacious living area equipped with blackout roller shades giving me and my partner the privacy we want, living full-time on the road.

There are only two floorplans for the 2023 Jayco Eagle, and both have an overall length of 40′ 1″ which is pretty long! This may be a bit too big of a travel trailer… I’d need plenty of practice to tackle maneuvering this RV! However, the impressive length means this trailer is more than capable of fitting several individuals on board, including friends, family, and even furry companions!

I could continue to list features about the Jayco Eagle, but there’s simply too much to comment on, hence why it’s our overall best choice for a luxury travel trailer. From Jayco’s industry-leading manufacturing and warranties to main interior features, the Eagle is a spacious and luxurious choice for any camper- and fairly affordable at that!

Most Floor Plans: Keystone Cougar Half-Ton

With 23 available floor plans, the Keystone Cougar Half-Ton luxury travel trailer is a winner in my eyes, as often it can be hard to find exactly what I want from an RV! It’s even a great full-time trailer, with luxury features including washer-dryer prep, theatre seating, and bunk bed options too if multiple travelers are jumping on board!

Towable by most of today’s half-ton trucks, this collection of Keystone Cougar luxury travel trailers is designed for maximum camping flexibility and a range of RVers too. Varying in length from 26′ to 37′, it shouldn’t be too tricky to find a tow vehicle able to bring this rig along for an RV adventure. I think the lightweight nature of this trailer is also a big bonus as no model weighs over 10,000 lbs dry, so it’s relatively easy to tow!

With all of Cougar’s premium features, like full auto-leveling , and the brand’s boondocking-friendly solar power prep and larger tank capacities, these RVs are equally at home at the campground or off-the-grid. This provides the flexibility I need to either camp at an RV park or out in the wild somewhere, knowing I can bring ample water along, and be supported by renewable energy from the sun.

Each floor plan comes with a fireplace and vaulted ceilings, and some of the longer rigs can sleep up to 12 people! Keystone offers some industry exclusives for all of their rigs, including a 3-year limited structural warranty, a 1-year limited base warranty, and 4G LTE and Wi-Fi prep. It’s warranties like these that make me feel supported and backed by RV manufacturer brands, and something I keep an eye out for when I’m browsing different RVs.

Besides lovely and homely interior features, Keystone offers durable materials as well, such as water-resistant flooring, uniform, and color-coded wiring, a climate guard package, and enhanced slide-out stability and weatherproofing. This allows the Cougar to be ready for whatever the weather throws, and means every step has been taken to stop water creeping inside the trailer!

All in all, the Keystone Cougar is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a variety of floor plans to compare and contrast with. There are spacious bathrooms, walk-around king beds, and full-size residential kitchens. Everything you’d expect in a luxury rig!

Best For Boondocking: The E-RV

It’s hard to find a luxury travel trailer blending sustainability with functionality and luxury, but the E-RV is in a league of its own, as it’s the world’s first all-electric RV! While most luxury rigs offer boondocking capabilities, the E-RV is made entirely for dry camping and doesn’t skimp on style or comfort, for a great RV vacation.

This RV is one of the best examples I’ve seen for providing a truly off-grid adventure whilst also providing the luxuries and practicalities of domestic living. The E-RV has been specially manufactured as an energy-efficient, sustainable home on wheels, powered by sun rays and nothing else! Technology is constantly developing, and creations like the E-RV are paving the way for change, reducing our impact on the planet, one rig at a time!

The composite-constructed cabin offers superior insulating properties, allowing the RV to be cool in summer and cozy warm in winter. I find it extraordinary that this trailer is capable of effectively processing its own energy, remaining carbon neutral, and being clean for Mother Earth. There are simply countless perks of the luxurious E-RV, including full off-road independent suspension as standard, perfect for off-road driving in rugged terrain.

There’s also a semi-off-road independent suspension, offering incredible support and the ability to power through to off-grid spots hidden in the wilderness. Although it’s an additional purchase which is a bit disappointing since this rig is pretty pricey, I would opt for the 65ltr fresh water tank as it can help extend dry camping for a few days. The overall battery capacity and solar capabilities have been tried and tested over 20,088 miles and 176 days through the toughest conditions only to exceed all expectations, so I trust this rig to power everything we need!

While having an all-electric rig for adventures sounds bare bones, the interior of these rigs is lovely. Designed in a classy black and white motif, the finishing touches on this rig are crisp and inviting, making it feel more like a proper home .

Best With Two Bathrooms: Palomino Puma Destination

Finding an RV equipped with two bathrooms can be tricky, especially if there’s a budget to stick to! But sometimes an extra bathroom is a necessity, and that’s where the luxurious Palomino Puma Destination comes in. There are a few different floor plans to choose from, and as the Palomino is a Forest River subsidiary RV, there’s a big name backing this RV.

I like the versatility of this rig. It’s great for a family vacation, a weekend at the lake, a trip to the mountains, or even a quiet refresher at the campground . There’s so much I love about this rig, from the spacious and airy interior to the multiple comfy seating areas. Not every floorplan of the Palomino has two bathrooms, however, the 39DBT has two showers on board!

There are also various bedroom options, some floorplans including more than one, which is great for me as I sometimes struggle to find space when my friends or family come to visit. Each layout comes with residential-style furnishings and a large master bedroom with a king-size bed to ensure a comfortable and relaxing getaway.

There are loads of standard features onboard this travel trailer, including solar prep, an outdoor shower, built-in knife and spice racks, and wardrobes in each bedroom, along with residential carpeting throughout. I’m a bit of a sucker for vinyl or hard flooring in an RV as they are easier to clean than carpet, but I guess carpet is cozier for winter! The interior design of the Puma Destination is very fresh and sleek with a luxurious edge, but it’s also still homely so everyone will feel comfortable inside.

The exterior has many safety features, including a sturdy powder-coated frame, backup camera prep, and more. Plus there are large pass-through storage compartments so the whole family can come along, as well as everyone’s gear!

Most High Tech: Living Vehicle Pro HD Model

Similar to the E-RV, the Living Vehicle Pro HD Model is in a different classification from many typical travel trailers. Their tagline is quite literally “Luxury Unplugged”, and I believe they have every right to claim that title! This rig is designed for off-grid travel and has innovative technology to back it up. Not only is this trailer capable of supporting off-grid adventures, but it also functions in remote environments with its own sustainable power source.

Living Vehicles are custom-built and fully customizable, so it’s effortless to create a rig of dreams. All of this does come at a high price, but for such a unique and capable RV, it’s hard to be surprised! This rig is a stand-alone electrical powerhouse with an intentionally designed and integrated system with automotive-grade lithium technology and the highest energy density on the market.

I love the creativity of Living Vehicle, with some spaces capable of multi-functioning – something I think more RV manufacturers need to include in their RVs to make interiors more functional. The overall interior is just as impressive as the off-grid capabilities with this trailer, matching luxury with European fixtures, and high-end finishes – it’s more like a work of art than an RV.

This trailer may not look like other typical travel trailers, and although the slightly futuristic look may not suit everyone’s taste, I think it’s a welcomed change from other RVs. There’s also the ability to comfortably sleep up to four individuals, making this a rig ideal for small families. Sleep four people comfortably in your Living Vehicle, with separate sleeping spaces for each pair.

It’s effortless to adjust the dining table and rearrange the cushions of the lounge to create a comfortable queen-sized bed in the living area. Plus, there’s an optional sleeping bunk too! Convenience is essential for me in an RV, as I live on the road full-time and would rather not deal with the same problems over and over again each day. Therefore, I love the sheer amount of thought that must’ve gone into the making of each of Living Vehicle’s models as it shows they are thinking with RVers at the forefront.

This rig is made for full-time living, no matter the desired comfort level. The finishings are gorgeous- black walnut and teak, aluminum, and an abundance of windows truly make this RV anything but traditional.  The LV shell is the true foundation all systems and functions are built on. The shell features hybrid structural engineering solutions and no use of wood, which is a bonus in my eyes as it helps prevent rotting or mold growth .

The entire Living Vehicle structure (including the subfloor!) is made from solid aluminum, proven to stand the test of time, and last for many years of solid RV adventuring. If an RV like this is within your budget, there’s simply no better option for luxurious off-grid travel. There aren’t any other towable rigs like the Living Vehicle, however, the high price point is a bit of a sting and means this travel trailer won’t be within the reach of many RVers – certainly not me!

Most Homey Feel: Airstream Pottery Barn Special Edition

If you’re looking for luxury but also for comfort, you have to check out this Airstream collaboration between this notorious RV brand and Pottery Barn, a luxury home goods store. They have combined forces to create a truly special aluminum rig.

Comfortable, connected, and capable of letting you travel anywhere while feeling like you’re always home, the all-new Airstream Pottery Barn Special Edition Travel Trailer is a gorgeous, 28-foot travel trailer designed in partnership between two iconic brands.

Featuring custom furniture based on best-selling Pottery Barn designs, tailor-made storage solutions, and a timeless design aesthetic, the all-new travel trailer sets a new standard for a well-traveled life. And boy, does it look comfortable and chic!

Whether you choose the queen or twin bed floor plan, there’s room for sleeping up to five people. Both floor plans feature exclusive Pottery Barn bedding that lets you sink into total comfort at the end of an adventurous day. Pottery Barn brought to life the allure of their timeless aesthetic with a black pull-down faucet, a stainless steel flat apron sink, and a versatile cutting board sink cover. Featuring the most comfortable cushions to ever grace an Airstream, the arm hides an airline-style flip-out table.

With all modern conveniences like a shower, toilet, and sink, the onboard bathroom has a residential feel with a bowl sink, sleek faucet, and wall sconces. There’s even an included outdoor accessory kit from Pottery Barn- an awning, dinnerware, table and chairs, and more.

This rig isn’t all beauty- it also offers many of Airstream’s reliable safety features as well. A rear-view camera mounted to the travel trailer’s back shell gives you the perfect view for safely backing up. Airstream’s ducted air conditioning system quietly, quickly, and efficiently cools the interior of the travel trailer. It also features a heat pump for warmth in cooler temps.

While this rig does boast a higher price tag than most, having the option to purchase a special edition Airstream is a luxury, to be sure. Plus, with so many special features and subtle perks, this is a great rig to consider- especially since Airstreams are built to last.

Most Vintage Look: Bowlus Endless Highways Edition

No one loves a vintage rig more than me, and this Bowlus Endless Highways Edition is an absolutely stunning aluminum rig with a luxurious but classy edge. Nothing beats the shape of vintage travel trailers in my eyes, but I understand it’s not everyone’s taste! This rig only comes in one size so it doesn’t offer the versatility of other trailers on our list like the Keystone Cougar, but it’s ideal for solo travelers or couples.

A spacious, zen-like bedroom converts from two twins to an incredible king so I can open up the space when a friend comes over to stay and return the setup to a king when I’m back to solo traveling. The hotel-style en suite bathroom is a refreshing change from typical RV bathrooms and lets me feel like a queen on the road!  makes traveling to events a five-star experience.

This is an authentic rig full of unique touches I often struggle to find in other trailers. The main cabin has dining for four, all in beautiful wood grain bringing depth and warmth to the interior to avoid the often clinical look of some RVs . This Bowlus isn’t just about looks, though, as there’s a powerful lithium iron phosphate power system available with fantastic off-grid capability.

I enjoy being able to use whatever appliances I need in my RV whenever I want, so this powerful electrical system allows me to run the microwave, all of the outlets, and even the A/C for a few hours when relying on off-the-grid power. This can all be done conveniently using an app which is the kind of simplicity I’m looking for out on the road.

This rig also isn’t very heavy, with a GVWR of 4,000 lbs, so I can tow it using pretty much any crossover or SUV and even some EVs too.  The Bowlus’ reflective armor offers peace and privacy which is a must for me in any RV. The bedroom, bathroom, and main cabin can become their own separate spaces, making this 25-foot rig a versatile and unique choice. It’s on the smaller side, so isn’t suitable for large groups or families, but a couple of travelers will be able to make the most of the stunning Endless Highways.

Best For The Whole Family: Grand Design Reflection

Aluminum trailers have a retro feel that’s a winner for me, but for more modern aesthetics that the whole family can enjoy, the Grand Design Reflection is a great option. With up to 37 feet of length to appreciate, this rig has enough luxury and family-friendly features to make it a great choice for any family vacation.

The Grand Design Reflection combines luxury, value, and towability in one amazing package with a renowned customer service team and high-quality production of rigs. The Reflection is a top-selling name in North America and is a favorite of many full-times, given it has  great living arrangements. With a residential kitchen, on-demand hot water, double pane windows, and washer and dryer prep, this rig suits short trips as well as longer explorations.

The interior is roomy which is great for me with a big rescue pup on board! And I love that the living area has ample space for a sofa and theatre seating as it means the space can become a tranquil paradise when the sun goes down. With multiple wardrobes and pass-through storage areas, I can bring everything I want on board and don’t have to worry about won’t have to worry about mess or lack of organization!

There’s a pantry in the kitchen for storing extra goodies and baking ingredients, a delightful walk-around king or queen bed, a well-appointed outdoor kitchen for hosting friends for summer BBQs, and even a floor plan with bunk beds so the kids can get cozy too!  There are loads of standard and optional features as well, including solar prep and a comprehensive four-season package which I would opt for as I travel year-round on various terrains through various weather conditions.

Not only does Grand Design take extra care to build their rigs with quality materials- they then put each RV they manufacture through a pre-delivery inspection. With over 250 points of inspection involved in this process, I feel confident in Grand Design’s luxury travel trailers.

Most High-End: Luxe Gold Fifth Wheel

This is a list of the best luxury travel trailers, so I simply couldn’t leave this Luxe Gold Fifth Wheel out of the race! The construction of this trailer is unbeatable, with 3″ super composite welded aluminum cage walls and 2.5 graphite-infused closed cell insulation for optimal performance in various climates. The 12″ forged reinforced steel powder coasted l-Beam gives me the peace of mind I need to live comfortably and safely on the road.

To bring additional luxury to this trailer, the sidewalls and ceiling are soft touch, providing a feeling of opulence and comfort. The frameless thermopane windows offer plenty of natural light and make the space feel even bigger than it already is! The slides also help with this, but I would recommend taking care of the slides and maintaining them correctly for improved longevity and smoother operation.

This Luxe Gold Fifth Wheel trailer is one of the high-end options on our list, primarily because each of Luxe’s fifth wheels are built and delivered straight from the factory to the consumer, meaning you can’t find these rings just anywhere. I love that the materials used are of the highest quality and are modern, as it makes the rig feel like a home and not just any RV.

There are five floorplans available with this Luxe Gold beast, but the 41GMD is the only one with a vanity slideout. This obviously does mean the overall size of the rig is increased, but since it has a length of 36′ 9″ and a height of 13′ 3″, it’s already on the bigger side! There aren’t too many floorplans to choose from, and although it would be nicer to have a few more options, the layouts available still offer flexibility.

It’s awesome that this Luxe travel trailer has been configured to suit a range of RVers, and the 38GFB floorplan even has two bathrooms which are a game-changer for families or traveling groups. Each floorplan has a TV and fireplace for ultimate coziness, and for epic functionality, there’s a substantial-sized kitchen, washer-dryer prep, ample seating, and comfortable sleeping arrangements.

The only drawback to this luxury travel trailer is the price! These travel trailers aren’t cheap, but they are worth every penny for those able to afford them. For full-time living, vacations with the family, or a summer break at the coast, this Luxe Gold Fifth Wheel trailer might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Finding a luxury travel trailer should be a joy, not a chore. I hope you’ve found a winner on this list, and are already planning your first camping trip. Rest assured, you can camp in style, comfort, and luxury, you just need to take the time to find the right travel trailer.

Nice luggage can make your traveling experience more efficient and enjoyable. For those who want their baggage to be not only well-made with useful features but also stylish enough that onlookers can't help but notice, luxury models are where it's at.

If you're willing to pay a premium for the best of the best luggage, you've come to the right place. Our Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage both in our testing lab and at home, and these high-end options stood up to our packing, rolling, lifting, and bat-hitting — plus, look great, too. Check out our list of the best luxury luggage pieces that are worth the investment.

Best Overall

Paravel aviator carry-on plus.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5

This carry-on is sturdy, stylish, and easy to maneuver, with various organizational features travelers will love.

There's no expander, but it's on the larger side for a carry-on.

Our top luxe suitcase is the Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus. After testing it, we loved this luggage’s high capacity and organizational features that make it easy to pack. It doesn't expand, but it's already on the larger side for a carry-on. And, thanks to the dual-zippered compartments and compression pad, we could fit everything on our packing list without a fuss. There's also a removable bag for separating laundry or dirty shoes.

The sturdy polycarbonate shell comes in five tasteful colorways. While it sustained a few scuffs when we threw it off countertops and hit it with baseball bats, this likely won't be as much of an issue with one of the darker colors. Overall, the durable design seems like it'll last a long time — and Paravel backs it with a 10-year warranty. The Aviator was very easy to maneuver, and the high-quality spinner wheels rolled like a dream.

While Paravel luggage is pricier than average, it's among the most affordable in the luxury category. But there's more to love about the brand beyond stylish, smooth-rolling suitcases. All carriers are ethically produced by fairly paid workers in safe conditions. Not only that, but Paravel strives to offset its carbon emissions by incorporating recycled and eco-certified materials into its designs, too.

Best Carry-on

Bric's bellagio v2.0 carry-on spinner trunk.

Saks Fifth Avenue

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

Flaunting an elegant design with premium craftsmanship, this durable yet lightweight carry-on rolls easily on its spinner wheels.

The suitcase is not expandable.

Bric's high-end luggage is an investment, but it looks and performs as you'd expect for its price. The brand's Bellagio V2.0 Spinner Trunk checks all the boxes, offering reliable durability and effortless maneuverability without sacrificing style. Though it's not expandable, it has lots of internal compartments and pockets for packing and organizing all the essentials. We also found it easy to close with the high-quality zippers.

At just over seven pounds, this carry-on is a breeze to lift overhead. It sustained zero dents from our bat swings and didn't scratch when we pushed it off a table. Just a heads up: the wheels roll smoothly and turn easily, but the handle sometimes gets stuck when you pull it out. Bric's is a family-owned luggage brand dedicated to elegant bags with premium craftsmanship — and it shows. The quality speaks for itself, so if it's within your budget, there's no reason not to get this suitcase.

Best Checked

Briggs & riley sympatico large spinner.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Maneuverability 4 /5

This sizable suitcase fits a week's worth of belongings without using the expander, and the durable exterior stands up to dents, scratches, and scuffs.

There are no exterior pockets, and the locking zippers can make it harder to close.

If you're in the market for a checked bag , we highly recommend the Briggs & Riley Sympatico Expandable Spinner. This sizable suitcase can easily hold a week's worth of clothes, plus multiple pairs of shoes and outerwear options — and that's before using the expander, which adds another two inches of space. There are two interior compartments: one that zips closed and one with adjustable compression straps. It would be nice to have at least one exterior pocket, but there's a built-in card slot, which helps with identification at baggage claim.

The exterior zippers worked pretty well, but since they're lockable, getting them to line up when closing it can be tricky. This suitcase performed remarkably well in our durability tests, sustaining no noticeable scratches, dents, or scuffs. It also rolled smoothly on the four spinner wheels, taking bumps and sharp corners like a champ — though pushing it over carpet takes a little extra effort.

The Details: 30 x 20 x 12 inches | 110.1-137.7 liters | 13.6 pounds | 4 spinner wheels

Most Durable

Delsey chatelet air 2.0 21-inch spinner.

  • Organization 5 /5

The Chatelet Air 2.0 has a stunning vintage appeal and stands up remarkably well to wear and tear.

Since it's not expandable, the compact design is best for shorter trips.

If you don't want to sacrifice durability for style, Delsey's Chatelet Air 2.0 might be your best bet. Inspired by Parisian architecture with distinct lines, contrast stitching, and a retro appeal, this suitcase is a stunner. Aesthetics aside, it's incredibly functional. There's a zippered compartment on one side and compression straps on the other, as well as various pockets and even a handy USB port.

We like the smooth zippers and easy-to-maneuver design. The spinner wheels move effortlessly on hard flooring, carpet, and even stone pavers. This suitcase is resilient, too. There was no visible damage after we hit it with a bat and shoved it off a table. We tested the angora (off-white) shade and, while light-colored suitcases are often prone to scuffing, this one showed no marks after being tossed around. The Chatelet Air 2.0 is a standard carry-on size, so we could fit all the essentials on our four-day packing list, but the compact design is best for shorter trips since it doesn't expand.

The Details: 22 x 15 x 10 inches | 44 liters | 8 pounds | Smart | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Rolling Duffel

Tumi large split 2-wheeled duffel.

  • Portability 5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

This top-of-the-line duffel has ample organizational features and an incredibly durable ballistic nylon exterior.

The exterior easily collects dirt and dust.

If you prefer a duffel but want a top-of-the-line design, check out the Tumi Large Split 2-Wheeled Duffel. It's extremely spacious — we were able to fit a week's worth of clothes and essentials with room to spare. With so many compartments and pockets, plus a zipper divider and compression straps, packing it up was actually an enjoyable experience.

This duffel bag has two recessed wheels that roll smoothly over all surfaces. It also survived our bat-hitting and drop tests without any noticeable damage. While the ballistic nylon lives up to its abrasion-proof claims, it collects dirt and dust pretty easily. (You can wipe it down with a damp cloth as needed.) The price is high, but it's backed by a five-year warranty and will likely last much longer. If you can swing it and are looking for a durable, large-capacity bag, you really can't go wrong.

The Details: 30.5 x 14 x 16 inches | 98 liters | 11 pounds | Smart | 2 recessed wheels

Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Large Check-In Trunk Spinner

  • Design 4.8 /5

There’s basically nothing you can’t fit in this giant suitcase.

It’s 12 pounds when empty, so be prepared to pay overweight baggage fees pretty much every time.

This stylish trunk is enormous — in fact, one of our team members affectionately referred to it as an “apartment” rather than a bag during testing. Boasting 97 liters of space, this suitcase is perfect for extended trips or hauling gear around the world. Despite this, it still fits check-in size restrictions for most domestic airlines. The trunk is also extremely durable thanks to a polycarbonate hardshell, zinc corner protectors, and other high-quality materials that keep your items in place and dry.

As we tested out the trunk for ourselves, we noticed that rather than featuring the 30/70 clamshell design most luggage of this size has, the Check-in Trunk Spinner was closer to a 50/50 design, which is helpful for keeping the weight evenly distributed, and we were able to fit several day’s worth of clothing on each side. The wheels rolled super smoothly, we found the trunk extremely easy to wheel along despite its size, and all interior zippers also ran without catching or snagging. Our only issue was with the security strap inside, which was slightly difficult to adjust.

The Details: 30 x 17 x 14 inches | 97 liters | 12.6 pounds | 4 spinner wheels

Best Aluminum

Rimowa original cabin.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

Backed by a lifetime guarantee, this sleek, futuristic suitcase has an impressive capacity, smooth-rolling wheels, and a durable aluminum exterior.

It doesn't expand, and the exterior is prone to scuffing.

If you're open to spending a bit more on luxury luggage, the Rimowa Original Cabin is a stellar choice. Though it's not expandable, this suitcase has a solid capacity while still meeting carry-on size requirements for most airlines. We used it for a four-day trip and easily fit several outfits and multiple pairs of shoes inside. An interior zippered compartment would be nice, but we like how the dividers help keep everything in place.

Our favorite thing about the Original Cabin is its sleek, futuristic design. But, despite the high-end appearance, you could probably drop it out of a second-story window without worrying about damage, and any natural scuffs and scrapes are a badge of honor for frequent travelers. Thanks to the smooth wheels, we had no problem rolling this suitcase over floors, pavement, and even cobblestone. It's not the lightest carry-on, but it's also not as heavy as the aluminum shell makes it look — and we could easily hoist it into an overhead bin when packed full. Lastly, Rimowa backs each purchase with a lifetime guarantee — just make sure you register your suitcase as soon as you receive it.

The Details: 27.5 x 16 x 9 inches | 35 liters | 9.5 pounds | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Softside

Antler brixham set.

The bags have a durable, scuff-resistant exterior that offers an attractive minimalist aesthetic.

There's no USB port or other smart features.

For those partial to softside luggage , we recommend the Antler Brixham suitcases. The patent-pending textile exterior with corner guards has proven to be strong, durable, and resistant to scuffs as we found no visible marks even after checking these bags. While the carry-on , medium checked , and large checked bags are also sold separately, we enjoyed traveling with all three as a stylish set, especially using navy as an alternative in a sea of black cases.

Each bag features a spacious interior, multiple internal pockets, and compression straps so packing them up is a breeze. The checked suitcases also expand to add nearly another two inches of depth. The best thing about these suitcases are how lightweight they are, especially when you’re up against restrictions. The carry-on, medium, and large bags are 4.19, 5.29, and 5.95 pounds respectively, each among the lightest bags we’ve ever tested. Adding to their ease of use are cushioned grab handles (that made it easy for even a petite tester to retrieve from baggage claim and lift into a vehicle), plus four double-spinner wheels that glided smoothly over bumpy sidewalks with minimal effort. The Brixham bags don't have USB ports or any other smart features, but considering the attractive, minimalist design, and lifetime warranty, we think they’re well worth the price.

The Details: 21.65 x 13.78 x 9.25 inches (carry-on), 27.95 x 17.13 x 11.02 inches (medium), 31.88 x 18.31 x 12.2 inches (large) | 45 liters (carry-on), 102 liters (medium), and 139 liters (large) | 4.19 pounds (carry-on), 5.29 pounds (medium), and 5.95 pounds (large) | 4 dual spinner wheels

Carl Friedrik The Carry-on X

Carl Friedrik

  • Durability 4.8 /5

This stunning, modern suitcase is durable and spacious, with an exterior laptop sleeve, charging port, and other standout features.

You might need a dongle converter for the USB-A cord.

Carl Friedrik's Carry-on Pro is a sight for sore eyes. This stunning suitcase has an aluminum frame (with built-in TSA locks on each of the bag’s clasp closures) and sleek leather detailing. The suitcase also has a slightly textured surface that helps conceal scratches, scuffs, and other imperfections (but we haven’t noticed any visible damage after taking it on trips on two separate occasions).

Our favorite feature is the exterior laptop pocket, which allows for easy access without having to open the main compartment. We also like that it has a built-in charging port you can use with a portable power bank — though you might need a dongle if you have a USB-C adapter. This carry-on has a generous capacity; the pocketed compression pad helps you fit all your belongings, and you can purchase a second compression pad for the other side to add space there as well. This suitcase is a bit of an investment, but the quality is undeniable, and it definitely looks like high-end luggage.

The Details: 21.5 x 15 x 9.5 inches | 43 liters | 9.5 pounds | Smart | 4 spinner wheels

Best Weekender

Leatherology kessler large duffle.

Leatherology

  • Portability 4.5 /5

Made of buttery-smooth, resilient leather, the Kessler Duffel is spacious, easy to pack, and visually appealing.

Due to the location of the shoulder strap pad, it might not be as comfortable for short people to carry.

Leatherology makes our favorite luxury weekender. The Kessler Duffel is surprisingly spacious, with a large main compartment, a few interior pockets, and one pocket on the outside. We easily fit everything on our packing list with room to spare. There are two grab handles, plus a longer shoulder strap. The shoulder strap is adjustable, but you can't really move the pad, so unfortunately, it may not be as comfortable for short people to carry.

The buttery-smooth leather might be the best thing about this weekender. It has a high-end look and feel and held up well during our drop test. The Kessler comes in four neutral colors from cognac to navy, with the option to personalize it with debossed, handpainted, or trapunto lettering. If you're giving this bag as a gift, you'll appreciate that it comes in a fabric dust bag inside a wrappable box as well.

The Details: 25.6 x 14.2 x 12 inches

Best Vintage-inspired

Steamline luggage the sweetheart carry-on.

Steamline Luggage

The Sweetheart Carry-on looks like an old-fashioned trunk and functions like a modern suitcase.

It's pretty small and only has two wheels, so it doesn't roll like a spinner.

If you like the look of vintage luggage, this one's for you. Inspired by suitcases used by 1940s train passengers but with modern features, the Steamline Sweetheart Carry-on is sure to turn heads. Unlike old-fashioned trunks, it can be wheeled around. While it doesn't have spinner wheels, it actually moves really nicely on the two wheels, and the pegs allow it to stand vertically upright.

We adore the overall design of the Sweetheart. The exterior has a premium look and feel, with leather strap details and gold latches, and it opens to reveal a gorgeous interior lined with a silky floral fabric. This suitcase is smaller than your typical carry-on, which makes it easy to lift and fit into an overhead bin. However, unless it's supplementing a larger checked bag, it may only be big enough for a short weekend getaway. If you love the look as much as we do and can swing the steep price, you won't regret buying this suitcase.

The Details: 20 x 14.5 x 6.5 inches | 2 wheels

The T+L team tried more than 450 pieces of luggage in our New York City testing lab, including carry-on bags and larger checked suitcases. To evaluate performance, each model was packed up, rolled around through an obstacle course, whacked with a baseball bat, shoved off a table, and hoisted into overhead compartments (if possible).

After the tests, each piece of luggage was awarded a score for capacity, maneuverability, durability, design, and value. We paid special attention to details like organizational features, weight, how smoothly the wheels rolled, and whether the bags sustained any damage or wear and tear. The high-end luggage with the highest average ratings was selected for this roundup, and we continue to use each winning bag in real-life settings for an ongoing testing period of at least six months. We will also update this article as we test more luxury bags worth mentioning.

Tips for Buying Luxury Luggage

Remember durability is crucial.

Durability is crucial, especially when you're paying top dollar for luggage. Your suitcase or bag should not only safeguard your belongings but also protect itself from potential damage. Polycarbonate, aluminum, ballistic nylon, and leather tend to be the sturdiest materials.

Softside models should ideally have a special coating to prevent stains and scuffs. Some suitcases have additional durability features, like reinforced corners, impact-resistant side panels, waterproof zippers, or moisture-sealed seams.

Buy the size you need

Think carefully about what size luggage you need. Do you plan to check your bags or carry on? Are you going on a long trip or a quick getaway? Do you tend to overpack, or do you like to travel light ? Will you have a chance to do laundry while you're away? Answering these questions can help you figure out what size suitcase to get.

Choose a brand you identify with

Let's be honest: one of the main reasons to buy luxury bags is to be seen carrying them. With this in mind, we recommend choosing a luggage brand you identify with. This might mean the company prioritizes sustainability or is known for high-end designs with practical appeal. Or it could simply be about rocking a recognizable logo.

A luggage cover can safeguard your bag from scuffs, scratches, and dirt as it makes its way through the plane's cargo hold and baggage claim. This will help protect your investment from potential damage. However, a cover will also conceal the design of your fancy suitcase, and it can be a little tedious to get on and off.

You can clean the exterior of your luggage with a damp cloth and a mild soapy solution or an upholstery cleaner. A pre-moistened disinfectant wipe can also work. If your suitcase doesn't have a removable, machine-washable lining, you can wipe down the interior as needed with a damp cloth and a mild soapy solution or a pre-moistened wipe.

According to Tumi creative director Victor Sanz, “Your garment bag should be sturdy, functional, and sleek. If you’re frequently traveling by plane, a garment bag that folds to fit carry-on requirements is essential.” He adds, “You want to find the size that will fit all your clothes without having to overfold them and will allow you to reach your destination in style.”

It’s also important to consider bonus features, like pockets and organizational compartments, and, as Sanz notes, “A crucial function is to ensure that you’re able to hang your garment bag when you arrive at your destination, so that you can prepare your outfits as easily as possible and to ensure that all your clothes are crisp.” Keeping all this in mind, we found the 12 best travel garment bags out there today. Once you start using one of these, you’re never going to go back.

MZ Wallace’s signature quilting isn’t limited to the brand’s totes, appearing here in garment bag form. The thin design is extremely lightweight, ideal for quick trips when you need to bring one to three outfits. There is even an exterior pocket for bonus storage.

Dimensions: 22" × 3" × 39"

Materials: Oxford, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I have been interested in a MZ Wallace garment bag for a while. It is perfect! Just right proportions and size. Thoughtful design and construction details.”

Tumi always delivers premium luggage that will last you over a decade, and this garment bag is no exception. Sanz says: “It’s foldable, with a sturdy handle for easy carrying, making it convenient and compact for every type of travel. I also love that it has several zipper pockets, so I can pack my toiletries and other travel essentials all in one bag. When I arrive at my destination, I hang it in the closet and I know that I will be ready to go.”

Dimensions: 15" x 22" x 6"

Materials: Ballistic nylon

What reviewers are saying: “This bag stores so much for a carry on. I was able to comfortably fit 2 suits and more for a destination wedding!”

This duffel has been receiving high praise ever since its release. A few of the reasons it’s so popular: The duffel is carry-on friendly, water-resistant, and has interior and exterior pockets. And those are only a few of its distinguishing features. Choose an original or compact size for the style that suits your needs.

Dimensions: 22" x 12" x 12"

Materials: Polyester

What reviewers are saying: “The Garment Duffel is a great purchase, especially for anyone in an industry that takes short frequent trips. I was actually able fit quite a bit more clothes than I had anticipated. Took the bag to work and my company bought 20 of them to give to customers. Great purchase.”

Longchamp’s iconic nylon and leather trim takes on a garment bag silhouette. The two-tone design exudes sophistication, with practical touches like a top carry handle, built-in hanger, and front zip pocket.

Dimensions: 23.25" x 41.25"

Materials: Nylon, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend who travels a lot and needed a nice garment bag particularly for his suits. This bag is perfect! It fits his suit as well as a few extra shirts. The fabric is an amazing, durable quality, and the leather details make this product look incredible.”

This garment bag is actually designed to fit inside of your carry-on, rather than serving as a stand-alone piece. The water-resistant exterior protects against spills, and exterior zip pockets hold small accessories. It gets the job done, while taking up the least possible amount of space.

Dimensions: 40" x 19"

What reviewers are saying: “I use this bag when I need to workout at work. I go from a suit to athleticwear in minutes.”

Looking for an affordable option that is available ASAP? Amazon’s garment bag holds up to three suits or dresses and boasts multiple zipper compartments.

Dimensions: 40" x 4" x 20.5"

What reviewers are saying: “I bought this bag in 2019 and it has held up incredibly well since then, performs all functions advertised at a great price value. I have taken it on many flights, buses and train rides and have never had an issue with fitting it in the overhead bin on both longer-haul flights and short budget-airline carriers.”

Hartmann’s garment bag adds contemporary touches to an otherwise traditional design. The result? A chic, useful travel accessory that will stand the test of time. The padded shoulder strap and multiple interior pockets enhance the convenience of this style.

Materials: Nylon

What reviewers are saying: “Hartmann was an anniversary gift from my work place, and I am still proud to own it 35 years later.”

Mark & Graham Commuter 2-in-1 Garment Bag

Another convertible duffel, but this time with a personalized touch. That’s right—Mark & Graham lets you monogram your duffel. With a plethora of zippered and snap interior and exterior pockets, this bag gets creative with its storage solutions.

Dimensions: 22" x 10" x 10"

This spinner-style garment bag makes navigating a chaotic airport easy. The ergonomic design has expandable capabilities, as well as various compartments, a hanger bracket, and a pocket for liquids.

Dimensions: 20.5" x 24" x 9.5"

What reviewers are saying: “It’s easy to maneuver and overall great quality and very neat design (many compartments and zippered areas).”

For golfers and non-golfers alike, Stitch makes a duffel that is water- and stain-resistant, and includes a hanger hook, shoulder strap, elastic shoe pockets, and webbed handles. You can even get it customized with your initials.

Dimensions: 22.5" x 11.5" x 12"

What reviewers are saying: “Love it! Fits into the airplane overhead bin, no trouble bringing it along as a carry-on bag. Very sturdy, zippers are tough enough. Shoulder strap is removable. My suit arrived in top shape using this garment bag. Highly recommended.”

Ralph Lauren Leather-Trim Hybrid Garment Duffel

Leather-Trim Hybrid Garment Duffel

Ralph Lauren’s duffel design is the epitome of understated elegance. An accompanying shoulder strap makes it easy to carry around.
