The 1975

The 1975 has announced the “Still… At Their Very Best” fall tour, the band’s biggest North American tour to date. The Matty Healy-led group will take their fifth album, “Being Funny in a Foreign Language,” across the U.S. and Canada for the second time since its October 2022 release.

The tour will kick off Sept. 26 in Sacramento, Calif., and end Dec. 2 in Seattle.

The band had teased the tour on social media throughout the month, posting vague visuals and linking to an online registration form.

“The album felt like you were watching something, like you were a witness to something,” frontman Matty Healy, who wrote the show and served as its creative director, told Variety in December . “And that was the idea with the show as well. We wanted it to be as experiential as the album was.”

The tour evolved throughout its initial North American run, from altered setlists to surprise guest cameos from Phoebe Bridgers and Bleachers. Healy made headlines for bringing fans onstage during “Robbers” and passionately kissing them.

Variety praised the band’s latest performance at Madison Square Garden , calling the concert a “captivating exposition from a band that embraces nearly every pop trope yet demands to be taken seriously.” The band will return to the famed New York City venue on Nov. 14.

A fan presale begins June 21 at 10 a.m. local time, while public tickets will go on sale June 23 at 10 a.m. on the 1975’s website .

The 1975 brings ‘The Sound’ to Tampa Bay

By Emma Lawrence

Posted on November 15, 2023 in Arts

the 1975 tour tampa

After queuing for a grand total of three hours and 46 minutes, the doors finally opened to Amalie Arena, hosting The 1975’s “Still…At Their Very Best” tour. I felt as if I had been transported back to 2013—fans everywhere harnessed an emo Tumblr aesthetic for tonight’s performance. Donning satin chokers, Doc Martens and their favorite thrifted leather jacket, the crowd packed into the pit, and I attempted to find my place. Regardless of the humid Tampa weather, we were dressing to fit the aesthetic.

Then the curtain dropped, revealing a scene depicting a sky of twinkling stars behind a house. Street lamps flickered with hazy smoke as classical piano music filled the entire arena. Various crew members began decorating the home as if they inhabited the set until a knock was heard. Matty Healy, the band’s lead singer, had entered the stage. He took his seat at the piano “downstairs,” and began plunking out “The 1975,” which is coincidentally the opening of their 2022 alternative hit album “Being Funny In A Foreign Language” and previous albums. In the past, the band has created a new rendition of “The 1975,” slightly altering it to fit their current style at the time. “I’m sorry if you’re living and you’re 17,” Healy repeats over and over again, empathizing with teenagers growing up burdened by social media and self-hatred. In the past, he joked that his music had an “apocalyptic sense of being a teenager in a major key,” and this song reflects that sentiment. The music swelled to a crescendo, automatically leading into “Looking for Somebody (to Love),” for which Healy grabbed a red electric guitar and immediately got the crowd jumping. It felt like emotional whiplash in the best way possible.

“Robbers,” a hit off of their self-titled debut album, put the audience in a trance. For this romantic song about a lustful yet melancholic bad boy, Healy belted every note into the microphone, causing an uproar among the fans. Fitting with the lyrics’ imagery of twirling revolvers and passionate affairs, the atmosphere filled with smoke as the lights dimmed for this moody number. Romanticising robbery and teenage angst, Healy continued with the iconic bridge: “And he’s got his gun, he’s got his suit on/ She says, babe, you look so cool.”

As he finished the previous song, the entire stage went black, leaving everything to the imagination. Then, a wall of mesmerizing sound cascaded through the arena. “About You,” the sequel to “Robbers,” had begun. This number has simple lyrics that elicit more emotion than any of the band’s other songs: “I miss you on the train / I miss you in the morning / I never know what to think about / I think about you.” Only seeing the silhouette of the band enhanced the overall vibe—we all put our phones away and lost ourselves in the dreamy nostalgia that comes with seeing a former lover that you never really forgot about.

This experience felt more like an art piece than a pop-rock concert. “Love It If We Made It” was a chaotic eruption of color where scenes from their iconic music video combined with key lyrics projected behind the band, immersing the crowd in the aura of the song. Providing an introspective look into how messed up our world is, The 1975 decorates misery in a series of ’80s synth pop melodies.

“Sex,” a brazenly titled song about teenagers in lust, was my favorite part of the concert. Strobe lights flashed on beat with the opening aggressive electric guitar chords, immediately setting the tone for the next three minutes and 35 seconds. Telling a provocative story of infidelity, Healy describes scenes with his literal lyrics, giving this narrative an added sense of realism: “Yeah, my shirt looks so good / When it’s just hanging off your back.” I screamed every word.

The 1975 ended their concert on the B-Stage with their single “People.” A bold choice for their finale number, Healy threw a tantrum screaming this rebellious adolescent anthem. Ripping his vocal chords to shreds, he grabbed at the camera and shouted his confrontational lyrics concerning climate, culture, social media and everything in between. Writhing on a tiny stage covered in faux grass, Healy screamed this song with such passion that I am surprised he even had a voice to thank us all for coming once the show concluded.

Brash, electric and nonconformist, a 1975 concert is necessary to experience at least once in your lifetime. You do not have to know every word to connect with the musicality of each piece—they are truly one of a kind.

The 1975 Are Still at Their Very Best for New North American Tour Dates

By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

The 1975 are returning to the States this fall for a second run of North American tour dates. The UK band’s Still…At Their Very Best trek will kick off in California this September.

The 1975’s latest run supports their 2022 album Being Funny in a Foreign Language, released in October. The group played a run of arena shows in North America last fall and have been performing worldwide all year. They are currently headlining festivals across the UK and Europe this summer.

The band released a new episode of their web series, A Theatrical Performance of an Intimate Moment, to announce the tour. The eight-minute video sees singer Matty Healy going through a morning routine before heading to work at a lab and experimenting on a patch of greenery.

The 1975 announce 39-date North American tour

The massive still...at their very best tour features shows across the u.s. and canada, beginning in september of this year..

the 1975 tour tampa

The 1975 have announced a behemoth run of shows in the U.S. and Canada slated for this fall. The band's Still...at their very best tour kicks off on September 26 at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center, and will wrap up almost three whole months later at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena. In celebration, they've also released Episode 4 of their absurdist video series "A Theatrical Performance Of An Intimate Moment."

Still...at their very best is a continuation of the 1975's ongoing At Their Very Best tour, which has been marked by near-constant online discourse, mostly thanks to the antics of frontman Matty Healy. These include eating raw meat on stage, making out with fans, cameramen, and security guards, and — oh, yeah — dating Taylor Swift . These new shows promise an expanded production, but what that means is still anyone's guess.

Madonna Shouts Out Her Cousins She Hasn't Seen in Years at the Tampa Stop of the Celebration Tour

The pop icon is currently in the midst of wrapping up the final U.S. dates of her acclaimed Celebration Tour

the 1975 tour tampa

Kevin Mazur/WireImage

Madonna is known for bringing her family along on tour, but some special guests stepped out to show their support at her concert in Tampa.

When the pop icon, 65, brought her Celebration Tour to Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday, April 4, she gave a shout-out to her cousins in the audience. Not only was the hitmaker excited that her relatives from her mother's side of the family were in attendance, she shared that it had been over two decades since she'd seen them.

According to fan-recorded footage that was shared to YouTube , the Material Girl mentioned her cousins were watching the show while taking a moment on stage to reflect on the value of family. After speaking about her children and reflecting on her late mother , she said, "One other mention is that I have two cousins that are in the audience tonight."

The seven-time Grammy winner continued, "I'm not pointing them out. I'm just saying that my mother is their aunt and I haven't seen them in, I don't know, 25 years maybe."

"I hope that you enjoy seeing them tonight," Madonna added.

The moment felt especially moving, given how the pop superstar has opened up over the years about how much her mother's death caused by breast cancer in 1963 when she was just 5 years old has affected her.

Madge gave a nod to her relatives shortly after the portion of her show, which features tributes to her mom, Madonna Louise Ciccone and her son David 's birth mother, among others, saying that it gives her "great pleasure" to see their faces on stage.

"This part of the show, and this part of my life, is extremely important to me," she said. "Everything that I have ever done in my life is meaningless compared to be a mother. I'm not trying to sound corny or anything because it is a full-time job."

Kevin Mazur/WireImage

After thanking her children David, Mercy , and twins Stella and Estere for performing every night during the tour , and noting how much she loves all of her kids (including the two eldest, Lourdes and Rocco , who don't join her out on the road), she continued to speak about how much family means to her.

The "Hung Up" singer said, "So, thanks for talking about family and motherhood and love. Right? Because that's what it's all about. That's why I'm here. That's why I still have this job because I love what I do. And also because you have been supporting me for 40 years, so thank you. Thank you for your love and support for four f---ing decades. I do not take it for granted."

She then broke into an acoustic performance of her 1989 classic "Express Yourself."

Madonna's acclaimed, long-awaited Celebration Tour  launched in October 2023 at London's O2 Arena with a spectacular two-hour set where she opened up about her  road back to the stage  following  her hospitalization last year  due to a  serious bacterial infection .

After the European leg of the tour, which lasted throughout the fall, she kicked off her shows in North American with several dates in New York City and Washington D.C. in December. Her tour resumed in early 2024 and is set to continue across the U.S. until April 15. At the end of the month, she'll take the show to Mexico City for five dates.

The Celebration Tour will officially wrap up with a special, free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 4 at Copacabana Beach.

According to a press release, the historic show sponsored by Itaú Apresenta "will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebration more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour."

How Madonna is honoring an artist with Tampa Bay ties on her Celebration Tour

  • Gabrielle Calise Times staff

Former Tampa Bay resident and artist Martin Burgoyne was just 23 when he died due to AIDS-related complications. His old friend Madonna is making sure he is remembered.

When the pop superstar came to Amalie Arena on Thursday for her long-awaited Celebration Tour, the event included a tribute to victims of the AIDS epidemic that features Burgoyne. According to the New York Times , Burgoyne’s face was the first shown in a montage set to the 1992 song “Live to Tell.”

Madonna first dedicated the song to Burgoyne during an AIDS benefit concert at Madison Square Garden in 1987 — the year after he died. Five years later, she wrote “In This Life” about Burgoyne and her first dance teacher Christopher Flynn, who also died during the AIDS crisis.

“Sitting on a park bench, thinking about a friend of mine,” she sings. “He was only 23. Gone before his time.”

Burgoyne was born in England and spent part of his adolescence in the Tampa Bay area. In 1980, he won several scholastic art awards for the portfolio he built as a Seminole High School student, according to Tampa Bay Times archives. Burgoyne’s photorealistic graphite portrait represented his body of work at a “surprisingly sophisticated” display at Tyrone Square Mall.

“He loved anything vintage and shopping at La France in Ybor,” said Sam South, a Seminole-based Madonna fan. “A couple years later he’s in the Lower East Side, hanging out with the biggest artists of America in the past 50 years.”

When Burgoyne moved to New York City in the early 1980s to study art at the Pratt Institute, he befriended Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, South said. He also became Madonna’s best friend, tour manager and roommate.

“She and Martin lived around the corner from me on the Lower East Side in a building with medieval black iron gates on the doors and dark narrow hallways that stank of urine and dead vermin,” wrote then-Miami Herald dance critic Jordan Levin in 2001.

Levin described Burgoyne as “much beloved and lusted after, an incandescent boy even in the darkest after-hours club.” Burgoyne worked as a bartender at Lucky Strike and Studio 54, South said, and managed Madonna’s first club tour and created the artwork for her 1983 single “Burning Up.”

Mary Dowd, who co-owns Myers Fine Art and Antiques Auction Gallery in St. Petersburg, noted that Burgoyne was a backup dancer during Madonna’s debut performance. He also designed the cover of the 1985 biography, “Madonna: Lucky Star.” That year, Burgoyne brought Warhol as his date to Madonna’s wedding to Sean Penn.

New York artist Trey Speegle remembered running into Burgoyne and his friends at events.

“It’s interesting to see how much creativity was swirling around,” said Speegle, who included a portrait of Burgoyne in his book, “80s Polaroids.” “AIDS was really ravaging the community at the same time. So it was fun, and it was also awful, because every month or every few weeks you’re going to someone’s memorial or someone’s hospital bed.”

Burgoyne thought he had contracted measles in the summer of 1986, but soon discovered he had AIDS-related complex. Warhol and Haring both contributed original artwork to advertise a benefit event at the Pyramid Club. The New York Times covered the September event, documenting over 500 friends in attendance, including Madonna.

Burgoyne died on Nov. 30 that year.

“Madonna paid for a memorial service where we all wept and got drunk,” Levin wrote in the Miami Herald. “She wasn’t at the party. But she was there for him — she held Martin’s hand as he died.”

Burgoyne’s parents retired in the Tampa Bay area. In 2014, Myers Fine Art auctioned pieces from Burgoyne’s life in New York. His parents kept his sketchbooks, which included drawings that would become the “Burning Up” cover, and Polaroids of Burgoyne and his famous friends.

Some photos may have been taken by Warhol, Dowd said. One Polaroid of Burgoyne and Madonna in a pink wig fetched over $5,500.

The auction attracted attention beyond Tampa Bay, with The Associated Press picking up the story and buyers as far away as Miami participating. Two women even showed up dressed like Madonna.

“(His parents) did say Madonna was very good to Martin and to them,” Dowd said. “She was a steadfast friend. It made me have an all-new appreciation for her.”
